CWA GV WEST GROUP CREATIVE ARTS EXHIBITION Where has this year gone? August again and time for Goulburn Valley West Group’s women from CWA Potters, Harston, Lancaster, Mooroopna, Rodney, Rushworth, Sheridan, Toolamba Wrens and the Rodney Juniors to show off their work at the Creative Art’s Exhibition. Exhibits of needlework, soft toys, knitting, crochet, machine sewing, flowers, preserves, photography, and much, much more. The cooking was out-standing this year, as I think there was every kind of biscuit, cakes and slices you can imagine on the table. Well Done! It looked lovely.

With everything that was on display we also had the stage decked out with different costumes, some from CWA Performing Arts Concerts and also some small children’s dress-ups.

I am sure Judges had a hard job to decide what articles to give First and Second place cards to. All the hard work over the last 12 months added up to 710 entries. This was an exceptional effort from the creative Ladies of the CWA. The ‘Blue Room’ upstairs was set up with tables showing six articles from each Branch, and also five small articles on other tables.

Patchwork quilts on the end wall, knee rugs, displayed on hangers to be given to different Hospitals, angle gowns, ‘one woman’s work’, and many other examples of handiwork were on show around the room.

Victory Hall in Hogan Street Tatura looked magnificent with all the items on display for Sunday’s Open Day. From 10.00am to 4.00 pm there was a constant stream of on lookers passing into the Hall. All the public visitors were overwhelmed with everything that was on display. A Devonshire Tea or Coffee was a much appreciated refreshment and all went well.

The Ladies from the CWA Branches should be congratulated on their wonderful Exhibition.

“Well Done” to you all. To the men who helped setup on Friday afternoon and packed up Sunday, we thank you, you are much appreciated and we couldn’t do without you.

TATURA LIBRARY RECEIVES FUNDING The Tatura Library received an injection of funding from the State Government today as Minister for Local Government, Marlene Kairouz announced funding of $600k for the Living Libraries Infrastructure Program.

Public libraries play an important role in strengthening our communities and enable libraries to deliver more for local residents.

The library redevelopment has been a priority action in the Tatura Community Plan.

Greater Shepparton City Council Director Community, Kaye Thomson said, “The funding will enable Council to extend and redevelop the Tatura Library building. The current Tatura Library has a lack of space, aged furniture, and reduced access for all abilities.

The funding will help meet the growing Tatura community needs and the larger catchment area. The Living Libraries Infrastructure

program is critical to ensure Council can improve the facilities and amenities of Tatura Library in a timely manner for our residents. I look forward to seeing the project progress and thank the State government for the funding.”

Goulburn Valley Regional Library Corporation (GV Libraries) operates the Tatura Library on behalf of Greater Shepparton City Council.

The Tatura library offers a hub of activity for the whole community to enjoy. The new Library will include features such as an expanded and dedicated children’s area that will provide improved access and much needed space for families, carers and prams.

The redevelopment of the library will allow Goulburn Valley Libraries to provide additional opening hours and increased programming.

Pink Ladies

CWA RODNEY BRANCH In August, Mandy Perkins welcomed everyone at 7pm. We dressed in pink for our cancer awareness meeting. There were 17 members present and we welcomed guest speaker, Katie Emanuelli, who is a Bowel Cancer Support Nurse from GV Health. Katie was happy to answer all our questions, and joined us for our “pink supper”. She is standing at the right in the photo. All proceeds from our trading table on the night go to the Jane McGrath Foundation.

Some members attended the Group Conference in Harston on 15th August, and Janice Barrette reported on the State Exhibition, where there were 18000 entries.

Our Friday street Sausage Sizzles have been successful fundraisers.

The GV West Group Creative Arts Exhibition was held in Victory Hall 24-26th August. The standard of entries was high, with many beautiful items and arrangements in craft, photography, cooking, preserves, horticulture, etc. Thank

you to stewards, Jan, Melvie and Shirley, and to all who provided lunches for the Judges on Saturday. Many thanks for those involved in setting up the hall, and in arranging the displays.

Our juniors were involved in biscuit decoration, and also had many entries in the exhibition. The spinning wheel received plenty of attention, and hopefully has inspired some people of all ages to acquire a new skill.

At our meetings, we have been bringing items for pamper packs for the Marian Centre, currently face washers for mums & children, Novelty tooth brushes & paste, perfume powder & lavender bags etc.

In September, members will be volunteering at the CWA catering hall at the Royal Melbourne Show.

For our 11th October meeting at 7 pm, the competition is “Best Gardening Tip”. Our speaker will be from the Marion Centre.

SACRED HEART SANDHURST ARTS ON SHOW

Enthusiastic Singers

On Thursday 6th September forty students from Grade 3 to 6 attended Sandhurst Arts on Show held at Notre Dame.

The three-day festival, which is part of the Sandhurst Diocesan Arts Strategy, was a wonderful success with more than a thousand students taking part in singing, dance and drama workshops with the Australian School of Performing Arts (ASPA). This year marked our tenth year working with ASPA Education.

After several months of hard work all schools had the opportunity to perform within these workshops. Parents, families and friends were invited to attend an ‘End of the Day Reprise’, which showcased performances from throughout the day. The finale was a massed item, a singing and dance performance involving all schools that attended the day. A highlight for the Sacred Heart children was being chosen to sing ‘Firefly’ at the end of day reprise.

TOOLAMBA WRENS CWA Members of the newly-formed Toolamba Wrens branch are learning how the CWA works by their involvement with Goulburn Valley West group activities. Two members attended the group conference at Harston to hear reports and guest speakers and to see how the branches work together for various causes. The branch also provided stewards for the group exhibition which was held in Tatura at the end of August. They were fascinated to learn how such an event is organised and to see the wonderful work produced by members of all ages. Group members combined to make a crocheted blanket for the exhibition, Beck Brisbane bravely volunteered to make the required offering of scones for the Devonshire teas and two members put in entries with some success.

Toolamba Wrens branch meetings are held on 3rd Tuesday of the month at the CFA rooms on Wren St from 7pm and new members are always welcome. For more information contact president Mel Hall on 0419 992 039 or check them out on facebook.

INTRODUCING KINDRED SPIRITS You will already know the names and now they are combining to launch a new name in the Tatura community. Julie Duncan, Lucy Lagozzino and Sue Mancini, erstwhile joint volunteers and community fund-raisers since 2015, are now formalizing their endeavours to form Kindred Spirits.

They plan to continue hosting a community fund-raising event each year however, from 2018 onwards, they will now become known as Kindred Spirits.

The name, Kindred Spirits, lends itself well to the idea of people united in one cause. That cause is to create an opportunity for people to contribute to and participate in the broader Tatura community in some way. Whether through volunteering, donating or attending events, your support is most welcome.

Kindred Spirits was part of the team in the Tatura Pet Art Work Show (PAWS) in 2015, Quirky Designs in 2016 and Open Day at Nithsdale House in 2017. It is no surprise then that these women are busily organizing another event for 2018.

This year, Kindred Spirits is bringing popular opera to Tatura. Julie Duncan tells that, “Instead of traditional opera we’re bring pop-op to town, making opera accessible to a broad range of audiences”. Songs featured will be from the likes of Phantom of the Opera with an occasional traditional, but widely known aria such as perennial favourite, Nessun Dorma.

Kindred Spirits is presenting “Opera in the Convent Garden” as a fundraiser on Sunday 18 November. Michael Lapina and guests will perform and afternoon tea is included in the cost of your ticket.

Funds raised by Kindred Spirits will stay in the Tatura community and this year, are to be distributed by a third party to assist children who face more barriers to success than their peers.

DAYS FOR GIRLS Service Clubs making a difference in the world

One Girl at a Time!

Four Lions Clubs in the Goulburn Valley, Harston CWA and Shepparton Soroptimist have all generously supported Goulburn Valley Days for Girls team’s effort in making a difference in the world - one girl at a time. Their support will enable 135 girls in the Marshall Islands to stay in school and complete their education, instead of staying at home when they have their period.

Mary Connelly-Gale Days for Girls Goulburn Valley team leader said that they are very humbled by generous donations from the local service clubs and they can’t thank them enough. “The donations have enabled us to purchase 100s of metres of material to make sustainable feminine hygiene kits.”

“In June our first shipment of kits was dispatched to Ebeye in the Marshall Islands, and they arrived in the second week of September. Twelve local women have undertaken training in women’s health education and this education component will be conducted at the same time as the kits are distributed.”

Mary said that Thursday October 11th is International Day of the Girl and to celebrate

Amelie Creating Her Masterpiece In 1997, TCC was officially opened as a childcare centre to cater for the growing needs of Tatura and wider Community. Over the years, the facility has seen improvements within every room which has seen the centre grow into a 103 place Early Child facility.

TATURA COMMUNITY HOUSE NEWS Our Term 4 program is out now and presents some fun and entertaining activities to wind up the year. Check it out in this edition of The Bulletin.

Seniors Week 2018- Once again we are celebrating Seniors Week with our annual Trivia afternoon. Get a group together or come on your own and enjoy a fun afternoon in the company of others. The cost is only $3 and includes prizes and a Devonshire Tea. Bookings are required. Thanks to Greater Shepparton City Council for supporting this event. We also have copies of the Seniors Week book which lists all the events that are on across the state if you would like one. Also, just arrived is the new publication from the Victorian Public Advocate on Medical and Enduring and Financial Powers of Attorneys.

Please register an expression of interest if you would like to hear more around Wills and Powers of Attorneys.

Our exercise and yoga programs are going well and we encourage anyone thinking of trying something new to pop down and join in.

October 1 – International Day of Older Persons. Ageism is the most socially normalised of any prejudice. The media portrays old people as senile and doddering on television, many employers discriminate based on age and some doctors apply a more relaxed attitude towards screening an older person for preventable diseases. Older people who succumb to these attitudes live, on average, eight years less than those with more positive attitudes. My mother often told me, “You don’t stop playing because you get old, you get old because you stop playing.” She lived to 94.

October 2 – Name Your Car Day. Cars are a part of our life, every day and in every way.

We name our children, our pets, and sometimes even our body parts, so why not name your car.

Actually, a recent survey showed that 94% of us name our cars, which is entirely different to calling our car names when it won’t start in the morning. So, if you’re one of the 6% lacking in imagination, pop out to the garage right now and give your car a name, although preferably not ‘Herbie’ or ‘Herpe’ for that matter.

October 3 – Virus Appreciation Day. This germ of an idea began when scientists realised that all viruses were receiving a bad rap.

Although there are many harmful viruses, there are also many good viruses that play a very important in our lives. You will find an article that I have written on viruses and the role they play, elsewhere in this month’s edition of the Bulletin. If you can’t find it, it’s because I forgot to write it.

October 5 – World Teacher’s Day. This day aims to raise awareness of the importance of the role played by teachers all over the world. The responsibility for educating future generations is a very important one and should not be taken lightly. However, if you don’t already understand this, then a promotional day won’t make any difference.

October 7 – Random Acts of Poetry Day. A poet is a nightingale, who sits in darkness and sings to cheer its own solitude with sweet sounds.” – Percy Bysshe Shelley. As long as there has been language there has been poetry, taking the shadowed hearts of men and women and finding ways to twist the abstract feelings and experiences of perception into the rising and falling rhythms of the spoken or written word. The spiritual and emotional experiences of mankind cannot be written in simple phrases or plain sentences bound by the rules of grammar and sense. Such is the purpose of Random Acts of Poetry Day, to unleash the human voice within us and share it with the world. Here is my offering, simply called An Ode to Old People’s Knickers – ‘Rose’s are Red, Violet’s are Blue, Ethel’s are Yellow.’

October 8 – Universal Music Day. Music enriches our lives in so many ways. It connects with our soul and can lift us up when we are happy and comfort us when we are sad. Just

hearing the opening chords to a well-known song can evoke wistful memories and transport us back in time. By the way, I’m talking about music here, not hip hop or rap.

October 9 – Curious Events Day. There are so many unsolved mysteries and curious events surrounding us on a daily basis and the purpose of this day is to encourage us to think about them rather than take them for granted.

Here are a few examples to contemplate.

Who actually does drink the last of the milk and leave the empty container in the fridge?

With all of his money, why did Donald Trump choose a hairpiece like that? Why does my cat always settle on my lap the moment I decide it’s time to get up? Why is a shop always frantically busy when I walk in and almost empty when I walk out? (and no, I don’t have a flatulence problem).

October 10 – World Mental Health Day. There is still a stigma attached to mental health but the fact is, we all have mental health just as we have physical health. However, some people have problems with their mental health and need help in order to get better.

Unfortunately, due to this stigma, many people who know they should be seeking help refuse to do so. The purpose of mental health day is to reduce this stigma and encourage help seeking behaviour.

October 11 – Face Your Fears Day. Take a moment to consider what your life might be like if you conquered some of your greatest fears. What would you do differently? One of my favourite sayings is this: ‘Action without contemplation leads to repetition, contemplation with action is meaningless.’

Face Your Fears Day gives you the chance to stand up to your fears, overcome them, and seize the day.

October 15 – World Maths Day. Calculators and computers have diminished our ability to perform mental mathematics. This day is to remind us that we have an excellent calculator in our heads and that we should use it whenever possible. For those of you wanting a mathematical problem, try this on for size.

What is (-2) x (-2)? I have supplied the answer at the bottom of this article.

October 17 – Mulligan Day. This is a day to give yourself, or someone else, a second chance. The term Mulligan originates from informal games of golf where someone has played a rubbish shot and is allowed to replay it. Usually, this is allowed once every nine holes. Whether it is a relationship with a friend or loved one, an old hobby that you abandoned or a past mistake that needs rectifying, you can give it another go on Mulligan Day. October 19 – Evaluate Your Life Day. At various times in our life, it makes sense to evaluate the progress we’ve made and the path we’re on. As we reflect, we may find

that we don’t like where we are and want to make changes to move forward with our goals.

Maybe we’re doing quite well and everything is moving along smoothly. However, most likely it will be somewhere in between. If we don’t take time to reflect and make changes, then we just tend to drift along, being blown in all directions by the opinions of others. Please refer back to my saying for Face Your Fears Day as it is also relevant here.

October 22 – International Stuttering Awareness Day. This day is intended to raise public awareness of stuttering, which affects one percent of the world's population. Many famous people have suffered from stuttering and worked hard to overcome this. Here are just a few of them: Emily Blunt, James Earl Jones, Bill Walton, Nicole Kidman, Carly Simon, Winston Churchill, Marilyn Monroe, and, most famously, King George VI. I’ve always been curious about the fact that people don’t stutter when they sing.

October 28 – Make a Difference Day. Here’s a simple question that you can answer in any way you choose – “What am I doing to make a positive difference in the life of others?

October 29 – International Cat Day. Here we go again! Yet another Cat Day and the thing is, I can’t recall any Dog Days or Canary Days.

Just who is in charge here? This day is to help stray cats find their forever home. Cats can lower your blood pressure, offer unconditional love (as long as you do what you’re told), companionship and many laughs. Perhaps you should stay off the internet if you don’t want to be overloaded with cuteness. As Charles Dickens said, “What greater gift than the love of a cat?” Actually, I can think of quite a few.

October 30 – Create a Great Funeral Day. We all have to go at some stage but perhaps you’d like your funeral to be an occasion of celebration. No, not because you’re dead! It should be a celebration of the fact you were part of the lives of the significant people around you. Naturally, we miss family and friends when they depart this world and feel sad that they are no longer around to share our lives and this is fair enough. However, how more meaningful would your funeral be to everyone one involved, and this includes you, seeing as you’re the star of the show, if you had a hand in planning it beforehand? After all, it’s your funeral.

Mathematics Answer: (-2 x (-2) = 4. This means that this is exactly the same as 2 x 2 which appears to indicate that (-2) is the same as +2 which of course is nonsense. If you are a genius mathematician, please feel free to email the Bulletin and explain how this works, because logically, it can’t. I pondered this same question last year but nobody came up with any explanation, either rational or irrational.

COMMUNITY HOUSE COMMITTEE OF MANAGEMENT MEMBER PROFILE Mignon Campbell

Tatura Community House Secretary (Committee of management) How long have you been associated with the Tatura Community House (TCH)? I became a member of the house in 2001 and in 2004 was elected to the position of Secretary and Public Officer, which I still hold today!

What have been the highlight(s) of your time at TCH? The TCH has expanded into a professional business but still keeps the friendly atmosphere which was one of the original aims of the house. The 25th anniversary celebrations held in 2007 was one of the personal highlights for me. We had the past Coordinators as well as friends and members of the Community House all together sharing their memories and good times. The annual Volunteer bus trips were also a favourite of mine.

What are you most proud of? I am proud of the fact that we offer a variety of courses and activities to the community. We also auspiced the Tatura Men’s Shed. We are all very proud of the annual Monster Garage Sale which has been a boon not only for the Community House but for the whole town and has helped raise our profile. Recently we held the very popular annual High Tea which was led by Bev Roberts and is a great get together What difference to the Tatura community does the house make? I believe it helps bring the community together. For example, we host the CWA, the Garden Club, Transition Tatura, a Turkish Men’s group and the Tatura Guardian. We would not be able to run without our volunteer base which has expanded in the last couple of years and is an asset for the House.

Mignon and Sally What has the committee achieved over the last few years? We have done a strategic plan which will guide our thinking and management into the future.

We have also been fine tuning our policies and procedures. One of the best things about the Board is that we are a very cohesive team and we are willing to get involved practically as needed.

Our AGM is on October 23rd and we are looking for new Board members.

The Early Years - 1919 - 1938 Employment became a problem during the Great Depression, and Tatura was no exception. A sub-committee of the unemployed began investigating cases of urgent need in February 1931, and its findings were reported to the Tatura Benevolent Society, the body registered for administering sustenance in the Shire of Rodney. Various short-term jobs were found for some of the workers, like gardening at St Leonard’s Private Hospital which occupied eight men at a time during July. 320 pounds was made available by the government for relief works in Tatura and Kyabram on condition “that the money be used for labour only, that men be given three days per week, that men be not given sustenance during the weeks they are unemployed, and that this work will not decrease the number of municipal employees ordinarily engaged by the council.”

The year immediately following the Great War was the year of another setback. The epidemic of pneumonic influenza caused the closure of churches, schools and billiard rooms, and the prohibiting of gatherings of more than twenty people. Out-door church services were allowed and according to the Free Press, “The Methodist Church arranged for an open-air service, but this was abandoned on account of a thunderstorm.” Special lessons in practical nursing were given in the Fire Brigade Hall, and the practice of mask-wearing in public, which was compulsory in New South Wales, was adopted by several people.

The telephone services improved considerably after the Great War. On the night of January 14, 1921, Tatura subscribers enjoyed a continuous service for the first time, and in July Toolamba West was connected. Radio, however, was the novelty that captured the public imagination at this time, and in September 1923, the Free Press announced: “Mr W. Slade, who has just arrived from England to manage the works of the Associated Radio Company of Australia Limited, will be in Tatura on business connected with the wireless broadcasting operations of the company. Plans are now well in hand for the broadcasting from Melbourne of wireless concerts, orchestral and dance music and all kinds of entertainments, children’s bedtime stories, market and weather reports, sporting results and news, and many other subjects of interest. The company is interested in securing an active agent for the handling of its wireless telephones and other business.

Those interested should see Mr Slade with a view to be amongst the first in the district to have their homes installed with radio receiving sets and so be brought in touch with this most wonderful invention.” According to The Guardian, a wireless demonstration at the Criterion Hotel twelve months later was interrupted by the appearance of Snr. Constable McManus and his off-sider, Constable Worland. “During the rendering of a delightful item by a Sydney Orchestra the Senior Constable, who was in full uniform, proceeded to examine the lodger’s book and enquire from each of those present why they were on licensed premises during prohibited hours. With the exception of four ladies and a gentleman, all were found to be lodgers.” The police

noted the four names, one of which was The Guardian reporter who was there to report on the demonstration.

Like all innovations, radio was used to support charitable causes and in February 1925, a wireless concert was given at Ardmona “in aid of the funds of the Church of England.”

Among the new social organisations that emerged between wars was a Scottish Society, inspired by Galloway Stewart in 1923, and a Bachelors Committee whose annual ball was the most looked forward to event on the calendar in the 1930’s. The Brass Band was re-organised yet again in 1925 and in April 1924 a new Masonic Temple was dedicated and opened.

In August 1935, Mr W. R. Ponting was elected president of a new Tatura and District Advancement Association that concerned itself with introducing a Saturday half-holiday and having more Tatura news included in the daily papers.

Tatura ratepayers rejected a sewerage scheme in 1938, but in 1936 they voted in favour of having Municipal Saleyards which were duly opened in April 1937 with a yarding of 10,000 sheep.

Two notable visitors came to Tatura during this period. Charles Kingsford Smith attended the pictures in Victory Hall one evening in 1932 and gave a short address. He was introduced by Cr Hastie and met with a great reception.

In 1927 Mr R. G. Menzies spoke in the Presbyterian Hall on the subject ‘Has Party Government Proved a Failure?” and in 1934, as acting Premier, he again came to Tatura on the invitation of Galloway Stewart, “one of the few outside Melbourne who say something pleasant about him.”

The Guardian newspaper was heavily edged in black on February 11, 1927 when it sorrowfully announced the death of its beloved proprietor, Mr H. Davy. “The populace was stunned by the unexpectedness of what is rightly regarded in Kyabram and Tatura as a calamity of the first importance. The valley mourns the loss of its most honoured and valuable citizen. At the Tatura State School, the Shire Hall and all public places, flags were flying at half mast, and the school bell tolled as the funeral cortege moved off.

The cortege was the longest seen in the history of Tatura, extending for over a mile.” During his life Davy had served as Master of the Rodney Lodge, President of the Golf Club, School Committee and Tennis Club, Vice-President of the Provincial Press Association, Secretary of the Local Repatriation Committee and Tatura Gardens, Treasurer of the Racing Club, Time Keeper of the Football Club, member of the boards of the Presbyterian Church and Mooroopna Hospital, and committee member of the Coursing Club and the Mechanics’ Institute. He had taken over the running of The Guardian from Edward Hanley in 1906.

TOOLAMBA PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWS School Concert: Wow! Our 2018 concert certainly lived up to the expectations. We were amazed at the response from families who turned up in droves to see their stars perform on stage. We hope that you thoroughly enjoyed watching the performances, we know that the students enjoyed being the centre of attention. As you know, events such as the concert do take a coordinated approach and we must thank our concert leaders in Filippa Kimmorley, Juanita Lardner and Nina Lemma for their great work and effective delegation throughout the term. We all certainly enjoy working on the concert knowing that you are ensuring that it is a success. If you have the time to help out with next year’s concert please come forward to assist.

Father’s Day Stall: Our Parents and Friends team have been fantastic in organising not only the concert raffle, but the Father’s Day stall. The students selected some special gifts for dad. These gifts were carefully wrapped

and certainly made all fathers feel special on Sunday morning. Events such as these contribute greatly to our school community, once again we thank you for supporting these stalls.

Professional Learning: We had yet another chance to work with Lorna Ward on our reading curriculum. It has been a fantastic opportunity to learn from such an experienced colleague. The shift in reading within our school has been huge and it is thanks to the staff and their willingness to continually improve.

Winter Junior Sport: It has been great to see and hear so many stories from students about their winter sport seasons. A huge thank you must go to the coaches and managers who make all of these opportunities possible. I had the pleasure of watching many of our students advance to the semi-final stage of the St Brendan’s Netball Carnival.

MURCHISON AUSTRALIA DAY EVENT

PROBUS CLUB OF TATURA

Murchison Australia Day meeting was held on September 3 with Robert Brown thanking and acknowledging all those involved on the committee and assisting on the Australia Day event. Apologies on the night was Bruce Smith, Debbie Morris, Peta Bailey, Alan Rosser and John Taylor with Rob acknowledge the passing of Di Catanach who served as the Secretary for 2 years. Outgoing President, Rob Brown was also thanked for his leadership over the last couple of years (and the many more alternate years!), Desley Richardson for her PR work for the last 7 years, Narrissa Gell for taking on the Secretary /Treasury roll for a season with Debbie Morris guidance and support. The new committee was welcomed in; President – Bruce Smith, Secretary/ Treasurer – Peta Bailey and Public Relations – Lisa Niglia with Jenny Lister from Murchison Neighbourhood house to assist where possible.

Beth Brisbane will continue to coordinate the photo competition and Christmas decoration extraordinaire; Narrissa Gell, will coordinate the Christmas Lights competition. All those involved with the committee will continue to assist in any possible way.

Probus Clubs were set up to provide a venue for retired and semi-retired people to get together for fun and fellowship. Our Club in Tatura was started twenty years ago this coming November by the local Rotary Club, and is a Combined Club. We have ranged in numbers from fifty to over a hundred and now back to just under fifty members. We have had a number of meeting places, but just recently have started meeting at the Moyola Gardens Hall in Dhurringile Road. We meet at 10.30am on the fourth Thursday in each month. Our subs are $40 and this covers the cost of the morning tea at each meeting plus the fees we have to pay to the overruling body, Probus South Pacific, for administration fees and also the cost of insuring Probus members going to and from and while at all Probus functions.

At our club we have a short business meeting and this is usually followed by a talk from one of our members in a segment called Member Behind the Badge, or we sometimes have a roving mike covering a particular subject. We then break for morning tea and then welcome a Guest Speaker.

Our Guest Speakers speak on a very wide range of subjects from travel experiences, work experiences to health issues for the elderly.

We try to have a trip to some interesting venue every second month, and the other month we have a luncheon at one of the many venues in the area.

Each month a group of members go along to Afternoon Delights, which is a concert put on at the Eastbank Centre, and this is followed by a nice afternoon tea.

Probus Clubs can have any number of small interest groups within the club. Some have walking groups, craft groups, etc. We tried a cycling group and a walking group in the past, but not very successfully. However, it is never too late to try again.

We would love to have some more people from the local area come along and see if you would like to join us. You would be most welcome to come to a meeting any time or if you would rather contact one of our members first, our President is Ev Leahy, phone 04 0824 1712 or our Secretary is Phyl Mactier, phone 5824 1217. ANTS AND PLANTS – AN UNUSUAL RELATIONSHIP LIBRARY LINES

Library Upgrade.

Staff at Tatura Library were very excited to learn recently that the Victorian government has committed $600,000 from Living Libraries’ funding to the Greater Shepparton City Council to support the $1.7million upgrade of Tatura Library. It is hoped the funding will allow the library to continue to meet the current and future needs of the Tatura community. The refurbishments will double the size of the library and when renovated will provide a new service desk, external return chute, IT area, amenity area and meeting room. Stay tuned for further updates as planning progresses.

School Holiday Programs If you are looking for some free fun activities for the children over the holidays then Goulburn Valley Libraries is the place to visit.

Tatura Library is hosting two activities. The first is Painting with Salt on Thursday October 4 at 3.00pm. Suitable for ages 6+ participants can get creative with salt, water and paint. On Friday October 5 at 3.00pm we are presenting Simple Science where children can have some fun with simple science experiments. Both of these are free activities but bookings are advisable. Children can also visit the library at any time during opening hours and enjoy our Hungry Caterpillar craft activity. Rhyme and Story-time Everyone is welcome to come along and enjoy this free activity for pre-schoolers. It is a fun session with songs, stories and an activity.

Ants can be a nuisance by milking scale insects and aphids and defending them from their predators. Unfortunately, this often results in a sooty mould left on leaves and branches.

However, ants can also have a beneficial relationship with plants that helps to control harmful pests.

Many plants have nectar-secreting glands that play no part in pollination of flowers. These glands are called extrafloral nectaries and can be seen on leaf stalks, plant stems and fruits. They can look different in different plant species and can range from plant hairs to bulbous structures such as you see on many Prunus species, like the cherry (see photo), peach and nectarine.

Some nectaries look like small red or green bumps on the leaf stem at the base of the blade, while others look like red donuts.

What is the ecological function of these nectaries you may ask?

The answer is mutualism or symbiosis. Plants secrete nectar to attract predatory insects, such as ants and wasps, to use as bodyguards to defend the plant against harmful insects. The nectar is a means of paying back the ants. It cost the plant little to produce this sweet currency by way of photosynthesis.

In spring and early summer, young tender leaves are at their juiciest, and caterpillars love to eat them. When this happens, the plants call on their bodyguards by secreting small amounts of nectar. This encourages ants to move around the plant or tree. When ants encounter a caterpillar, they become aggressive and keep them at bay. It is therefore believed, that the extrafloral nectaries are designed to attract ants.

TATURA PRIMARY SCHOOL FUTURE SCIENTISTS IN THE MAKING Students, staff and parents had a fantastic time celebrating Science Week at Tatura Primary School. All students participated in an hour long session during the week which was hands on and full of fun.

Our 5/6 students engaged in a session titled ‘Chemical Chaos’, our 3/4 students ‘It’s Chemistry’ and our F/1/2 students ‘Mix and Match’. It was great to see the excitement and wonder in students faces as they poured, mixed and created.

On the Wednesday evening C Block was filled with many students and their families for our ‘Family Science Night’. The Scientwists once again amazed us with their flames, wizzes and bangs. This is certainly an event we look forward to and we thank ‘The Scientwists’ for performing the show and to our families for engaging in this event.

A big thank you must also go to Mrs Crosbie for organising such an exciting week of learning!

Ready to Eat

NUT AND BLUEBERRY OVERNIGHT NO-KNEAD BREAD Ingredients: 3 Cups Plain Flour 1/2 Cup Chopped Hazelnuts 2 tsp Sea Salt 2 tsp Grated Lemon Rind 1 tsp Dried Yeast 1 tsp Caster Sugar 1 3/4 Cups Warm Water 2/3 Cup of frozen Blueberries Method: Combine flour, nuts, salt, rind, yeast and sugar in a bowl.

Make a well in the centre and pour in water.

Mix with wooden spoon until just combined (dough will be sticky).

Transfer in to lightly oiled bowl, cover with plastic wrap.

Chill for 12 hours or overnight.

Next day, line a 12 x 20cm pan with baking paper.

Knead blueberries gently in to dough, on a lightly floured bench.

Shape dough in to a loaf and place in pan.

Cover with plastic wrap and a tea towel, leaving in a warm place for one hour.

Bake 35-40 minutes at 200C until loaf sounds hollow when tapped.

Serve warm, sliced and dusted with icing sugar.

SURPRISES GALORE You may have noticed the gift shop next to the CBA is under new management. Don't be fooled. It is not only under new management but a new business as well. TJ, an avid collector, is the new owner of this business that is really going places. He wishes to bring back the 80s, 70s and 60s and his main aim is to make his customers happy. He says that seeing the face of a customer who has seen something they had as a child gives him great pleasure and he hopes people will come in and have a look at what he has on offer. With such limited space in the shop he changes the stock regularly from his vast stores, though his DVDs are always available, priced at $5 each or 6 for $20 and there is also a $2 section to be checked out. You may be aware that the large stores in Shepparton have taken DVDs off their shelves but that won't be a problem for those shopping in Tatura now. TJ wishes to let everyone know his shop sells more than

CAN YOU PLEASE EXPLAIN THIS TO ME?

“Oh Agnes,” I groaned, “remind me not to go out ever again.”

Agnes looked at me, surprised. “Why Merle? And what do you mean go out ever again? As in never?”

“Oh, just to anywhere where there may be people,” I explained. “You know how much I dislike people and especially badly behaved people?

Well I dislike badly behaved children even more. That’s what I really mean.”

Agnes peered at me suspiciously. “Oh dear, Merle, I’m sensing there was an incident.”

“Well Agnes, just let me tell you about the awful business I encountered last night. There I was doing a bit of late night shopping for some new towels in the local department store. You know how I have been saying I needed some new towels.”

“Oh yes you did mention that just the other day, Merle,” agreed Agnes.

“Well I took myself off the see what I could find and ended up at the shop where we often go. I couldn’t help but notice how peaceful it was around tea time when everyone is at home and I just puddled around and looked at all the different sections of the store, really enjoying the quiet. I even priced the sheets, You know I need new sheets too?”

“Yes, yes of course,” agreed Agnes. “You told me that your old ones are faded and becoming a little thin.”

“Yes, that’s right Agnes, you certainly are a good listener?”

“Yes Merle, I do try.”

“Anyway, I made my way to the counter to pay for the towels, they were quite a good price so I got four, all the same colour so they match my décor.”

“That’s very important Merle. I do the same. You can’t just throw any old colour in there when you have a theme going. You really do need to match it.”

“I’ll never get to the end of my story if you keep interrupting me, Agnes,” I said.

“Sorry, Merle,” replied Agnes. “I was thinking that perhaps this was your story.”

“No, it isn’t. Anyway, there was only one other customer in front of me, well two ladies and two small children actually. One child was in the pram and being very quiet, while the other, a little girl was holding onto a bag of lollies. One of the ladies took the lollies off her so they could be scanned at the counter. Well, you would have thought they had cut off the little girl’s leg. She wailed, she screamed, she cried a flood of tears and then when the lollies were not handed back to her in a speedy enough manner, regardless of her outstretched, shaking, demanding arms, she resorted to a high-pitched scream that simply went on forever. I was worried that the windows might all shatter. At this point the mother looked around, highly embarrassed, searching for anyone else who she thought would sympathise with her plight. You know that look Agnes, the one that says, oh kids hey, such little rascals.”

Agnes nodded. “I know the look you’re talking about Merle. I think we’ve all used it at some time.”

“Perhaps you have Agnes, I’m not sure that I ever did. Anyway, if I may

continue? They quickly handed the child the lolly bag which immediately stopped her screaming. However, because she was only around two and a half years old, she struggled to open it so they had to take the lollies off her again to help. Naturally the child screamed once again as though she would die without the lollies. The mother smiled weakly at me and said, “She gives me such a headache but these lollies keep her quiet.”

The woman at the counter quickly replied, “Oh yes, I would give her ten bags of lollies to keep her quiet.”

I could not take any more of this lunacy. After the ladies with the screaming child had departed, I said to the woman at the counter, “Do you know how many bags I would give to that child?”

She looked confused by my question and eventually replied, “No I don’t.”

“None,” I said, “absolutely none. That beastly little child has just demanded those lollies, and for her bad behaviour, her mother has just rewarded her. What do you think that little girl will do next time she wants lollies or anything else for that matter?”

“Um, oh, um, I don’t know,” she replied while fumbling around as she put my towels in my bag and looking like she wished I was not there.

“Well let me tell you what she will do,” I told her. “She will scream and scream until she gets what she wants. This tiny child has now been told how to behave. Her mother is teaching that little girl how to manipulate her. Nobody likes a screaming child but I can tell you one thing, if you don’t reward their bad behaviour they soon learn to stop. I would never have given my children something they screamed for. There was none of this demanding what I should give them, no sir. If people just took the time to teach their children to behave with good manners and respect, then all the hard work would be done. Now that child will grow up becoming more and more demanding and the parents will be too terrified not to give her what she wants in case she gets upset or embarrasses them. If you ask me, this is actually a kind of child abuse.”

The shop assistant had a glazed look by now and was avoiding eye contact with me, but all the same, she might remember this conversation one day and it could be very helpful for her. “Do you have children I asked?”

“No, not yet,” she muttered under her breath, looking slightly terrified.

“Well when you do, just remember one golden rule, never reward bad behaviour or you will be asking for trouble.”

“Okay, thank you,” she said as she looked past me to another customer.

“Next please.”

Agnes smiled in acknowledgement as I came to the end of my story.

“You are quite right, Merle, good parenting takes commitment but it’s truly worth it. After all, our children were little angels weren’t they.”

“They were indeed Agnes. They never did anything naughty. You know, we should run classes of some kind so we can pass on our parenting skills and really prevent some of these new mums from making grave mistakes,” I said.

I simply don’t understand why parents don’t get this whole rewarding bad behaviour thing. They are making a rod for their own back. Why are they held to ransom by tiny little people who really are at their mercy, not the other way around. Can someone please explain this to me? Anyone?

Students at the Shepparton Police Station Murals

DHURRINGILE PRIMARY SCHOOL Excursion Week For the week of our swimming program, we decided to incorporate a variety of mini excursions along with the swimming lessons each afternoon.

On Monday, we visited the Shepparton Art Museum where we completed the self-guided tour. The students were fascinated by the current exhibition of Indigenous Ceramic art. Their definition of what makes art was challenged too. We also looked at the murals on the wall of the Shepparton Police Station.

After lunch and a play at the All Abilities Playground, we had our first swimming lesson for the week.

On Tuesday we explored the Shepparton Botanical Gardens on the old council tip site, followed by our swimming lesson.

While the senior students had a combined schools band rehearsal at Westside on

On Thursday, we had our usual music lesson with Nicole Thorne before heading to Shepparton to explore the shores of the Shepparton Lake.

Friday was a busy day, shopping for the barbeque that we hosted for schools attending the annual Chinaman’s Garden to Kidstown Fun Run, attending the Fun Run and our last swimming lesson.

FINDING JOHN When Margaret Foord received a DNA test kit from her sister-in-law as a Christmas present she had no idea what it would lead to. Margaret had always been interested in finding out more about her family as she knew nothing about her father since she left England with her mother in 1949. On a trip back to England 14 years ago her sister-in-law and niece found out some information including that her father was in NSW! Six months ago Margaret went to the Family History Group at the Tatura Community House where the facilitators Garry and Lois helped her with finding out more information. They found out that her father had remarried and had another two boys unfortunately her father and one half- brother had passed away. After some more digging Garry located a John Foord in Brisbane who fitted the criteria for the missing brother. Garry rang John and, after some checking to see that he was the right John Foord, told him he had a half-sister who would love to be in contact. It turned out that John had been looking for Margaret for years.

Recently John travelled from Brisbane to meet up with Margaret and they spent several days exchanging stories and photos. John and Margaret also travelled to meet the sister-in-law whose Christmas gift had encouraged Margaret to delve further into her family history.

Well, the new season is under way but not as much as we had hoped. We are having another season where the hot houses are dropping too low in temperature to germinate the seedlings.

We may have to consider auxiliary heating.

Last year we had the same problem which meant seedlings were about a month late maturing. Fortunately, some species really need very cold conditions but the germination process is protracted – up to three months, so it is no good running out every day to see if there are any shoots.

With what looks like a dry season ahead of us steps need to be taken to keep the water up to any seedlings. Borrowing from what rose growers recommend try slow drip watering.

Make some very small holes in the bottom of

a soft drink bottle (or similar), put it beside the young tree, fill with water and feel you have done your best. If the weather remains dry, fill the bottle again in a couple of weeks.

This should encourage the plant to really put its roots down but don’t overdo the water or you will be killing it with wet feet.

A small tree that really took my eye in the nursery is E. woodwardii which is currently covered in large yellow blossoms of the Snugglepot and Cuddlepie babies’ variety.

The tree is a mallee, largish grey leaves, a bit untidy in shape, drought and frost tolerant and preferably lighter soil for the best results. And may we all come out of a dry year with our favorites surviving.

Murchison Meteorite Display

Murchison Heritage Centre Open Times Now that it is Spring and with the weather is improving, our volunteers (‘grey nomads’) have returned from travelling to the north, so we are now open for business at Murchison Heritage Centre each Saturday morning from 10am – 12.30pm.

Through the winter recess, work has continued in cataloguing photographs and artefacts on our updated computer program, displays have been refreshed and we have continued to answer family history and general enquiries. Children from Murchison Primary School have visited regularly to experience the role of volunteers in their community – they are quick to learn new tasks, always interested in their own family files and proudly show them to their friends.

History Week will be celebrated from 7th to 14th October when the Heritage Centre will be open every day from 11am to 2pm. Our special event for History Week this year is the publishing of a new book about the Murchison meteorite, a picture story book suitable for children 3 – 8 years. The book makes a great gift and connects children to an important event that happened in their own locality.

LEUKAEMIA FOUNDATION FUNDRAISING

On Sunday the 21st of October the Tatura & District Historical Society will conduct its annual tour of the Camp 1 Internment Camp on Mick Kerrins property down towards Murchison. It is essential that we first acknowledge and express our sincere appreciation for being allowed to do this.

Camp 1 was a civilian prison camp established at the outbreak of WW2 to hold male civilian “enemy aliens” who were deemed to be a threat to British and therefore Australian Security. The inmates, mainly German and Italian, were rounded up in British controlled areas such as Persia, South Africa, the South Pacific and Australia and included a lot of welleducated and qualified men. Professions represented included wool buyers, chefs, teachers, musicians, engineers and although some were definitely Nazi supporters some were not.

Inmates had little to fear from Australian guards but if you were not a Nazi sympathizer you were well advised to sit down, shut up and go with the flow. Any physical threat to your wellbeing was likely to come from your fellow inmates rather than your gaolers Our tour next month will be led by John Gribben who expounds great knowledge relating to the camp and its history and is always well received by attendees. Lagozzino’s Top Pub is the venue for lots of fundraising activities in the coming months. They have until November 4 to complete their fundraising and are aiming to raise another $24,000 which will bring the total raised by them in the past three years to $50,000. Currently they have around half of their target and they would really like to meet it so are asking for your support. They invite everyone to drop into the pub to attend any of the events or drop a few coins into the collection tins.

Every cent helps keep a family together when they are struggling with this terrible illness. The money Australian bartenders raise throughout the ‘Ugly Bartender Campaign’ pays for family accommodation during relocation to Melbourne or other major cities across Australia for treatment. This lets families stay together during a loved one’s illness.

PHOBIAS (20-11)

Our list of phobias continues this month counting down to the ten most common. I mentioned to my wife that I couldn’t really think of any phobias that I personally suffered from and she replied that I had a phobia about not having any phobias. How can you argue with that?

20. Trypanophobia – The irrational fear of needles (from the Greek ‘trypano’ meaning borer). About 10% of the population suffer from this condition. Although injections are generally unpleasant, most of us suffer the short-term pain for the long-term gain and our reluctance to warmly embrace this occasion is completely understandable. Sufferers, however, often forgo medical treatment due to their fear of needles which can place their well-being in serious danger.

19. Haphephobia – The morbid fear of intimacy or being touched (from the Greek ‘haphe meaning ‘touch’). Some sufferers may have been touched inappropriately at some point in their lives and have subsequently become averse to all forms of intimacy. It may also result from an acute exaggeration of the normal tendency to protect one’s personal space and is expressed as a fear of contamination or invasion.

18. Enochlophobia – The irrational fear of crowds (from the Greek ‘ochlo’ meaning people). This is a common social phobia that is known to affect many people. Often it is the noise of the crowd that triggers anxiety or the fact that the individual feels their personal space is being violated. This is similar to the feeling that you get when ‘close talkers’ invade your personal space and you can feel their breath on your face with every word that they utter. Please, you people, back off!

17. Alektorophobia – The abnormal fear of chickens (from the Greek ‘alektor’ meaning rooster’). Sufferers tend to feel uneasy around chickens, or around certain places in which chickens are known to reside, such as farms. Visible signs indicating the presence of chickens, such as eggs, may also trigger symptoms and overwhelming fear. Even the sound of a chicken can trigger this fear. I’m reluctant to call these people ‘chickens’ as this phobia has made it into the top twenty so there must be quite a few sufferers around who would take exception to this. Hmm, perhaps I’m the ‘chicken’.

16. Ornithophobia – The irrational fear of birds (from the Greek ‘ornith’ meaning bird). Birds have made it into this list on several occasions so obviously people fear birds of all varieties more than they fear actual predators such as crocodiles and lions which just goes to prove that phobias are actually irrational. Anyway, some people fear only birds of prey such as vultures, while others are afraid of even household pets like parrots and harmless little budgies and tweetie birds. One of the most common legends surrounding birds is that they may serve as portends of death.

15. Atychiphobia – The irrational fear of failure (from the Greek ‘atyches’ meaning unfortunate). Sufferers consider the possibility of failure so intense that they choose not to take the risk. Often this person will subconsciously undermine their own efforts so that they no longer have to continue to try. A friend of mine, who had never failed a subject in her life, dropped out of university because she was worried that she might fail. None of us enjoy failing but that is an entirely different matter.

14. Monophobia – The abnormal fear of being alone (from the Greek ‘monos’ meaning lone or single). This is characterised by extreme insecurity, anxiety and depression when the sufferer has to be alone, even for a short period. Some animals also suffer from monophobia hence the inane yapping of little dogs. I also became an instant sufferer one night when I was watching The Exorcist by myself.

13. Glossophobia – The fear of public speaking (from the Greek ‘glossa’ meaning tongue). Sufferers tend to freeze in front of an audience, their mouth dries up, their voice weakens and they may start to physically shake. They also tend to shy away from any opportunity to speak in public, even if it’s only to a couple of people. Although it’s rated at number thirteen on the list, as many as 75% of people have glossophobia.

Statistically, far more of us claim that we would prefer death to giving a speech; even comedian Jerry Seinfeld used to joke that at a funeral, most people would rather be lying in the casket than delivering the eulogy.

12. Thanatophobia – The morbid fear of death. This a feeling of dread, apprehension or anxiety when one thinks of the process of dying, or ceasing to exist. Louis, chevalier de Jaucourt, wrote the following about this subject: “The thought of our destruction is like a light in the middle of the night that spreads its flames on the objects it will soon consume.

We must get used to contemplating this light, since it announces nothing that has not been prepared by all that comes before; and since death is as natural as life, why should we be so afraid of it?”

11. Carcinophobia – The fear of cancer (from the Greek ‘carcino’ meaning cancer). This is the morbid dread of contracting cancer and may stem from that fact that other family members have contracted cancer in the past. If there is a cancer disposition due to family genetics then this is quite understandable. I recently discovered that there is an entire website dedicated to carcinophobia sufferers. However, these sufferers need to be wary as recent scientific studies have shown that high levels of stress can significantly increase your chances of contracting cancer.

It would be ironic if worrying about getting cancer actually causes you to get cancer. My advice is the play the Bobby McFerrin song ‘Don’t Worry, Be Happy.”

30 Years Ago…

Rodney Shire Council will hold a public meeting in its chambers to form a Tatura Swimming Pool management committee responsible for mowing lawns and running the kiosk. In past years, council hired a contractor who took care of maintenance and gate receipts. Mr James said, “There is no concern about how the contractor has been doing his job over the past year. The idea of the committee, if it is formed, is to raise money to either pay for the contractor rather than the council, or do a lot of the work themselves. The decision is up to them.” ***** Alan Oliver was called to a fire recently which is nothing unusual as he has been fighting fires for more than two decades. However, this time it was different. The fire was at the volunteer fireman’s home in Toolamba.

Mr Oliver’s employer told him, “There is a house fire in the main street of Toolamba and I think it could be yours.” Mr Oliver was working at an orchard between Murchison and Toolamba when the fore brigade members received the emergency call. Both he and his employer, John Clement, are volunteers with the Toolamba Fire Brigade. The fire caused $15,000 damage to the lounge room and kitchen. ***** Tatura Lions Club has won this year’s achievement award judged by Lions International for a club in Victoria’s fifth zone. It is the first time the club, which has thirty members, has won the award from the other 55 clubs in the zone. Victoria is divided into six Lions Club zones. The award is made for outstanding community work and each of the 56 clubs in the zone submitted correspondence each month during the year detailing projects completed during the year. The correspondence was then forwarded to Lions International in the United States where the award was judged. ***** The petition organised by Tatura hardware retailer, Mr Tony Nappa, calling for the redesigning of the $2 coin, has reached the desk of treasurer Mr Paul Keating. Mr Nappa’s petition attracted over 11,000 signatures from around the Goulburn Valley and was presented to Mr Keating by the deputy leader of the National Party and Member for Murray, Mr Bruce Lloyd. After hearing the petition had reached its destination Mr Nappa said, “I have planted the seed of the people’s discontent and hope we get good results from here.” Mr Nappa said the government should admit it made a mistake in developing the coin to its present design. ***** The jubilant Tatura Football Club Reserves team was presented with its premiership flag at the annual Goulburn Valley Football League presentation night held at Euroa last Wednesday night. The leagues best

and fairest winners were also presented with their medals and trophies at the presentation night. ***** Mr Jack Keane, well known racing personality from Tatura, was presented with a life membership of the North-Eastern District Racing Association.

He was also presented with a Victorian Country Association medallion at Benalla. Jack, who has spent a lifetime in racing, has been a committee man for the Tatura Racing Club and then the Goulburn Valley Racing Club when they both merged. He was also president of the GVRC for nine years and was president of the NEDRC for three years. ***** The Goulburn Valley made its mark on Australian ballroom dancing in Kyabram recently. Richard Henderson of Tatura, Jan Leahy of Mooroopna, Lyn McArdle and Heather Edwards of Kyabram were awarded 100 percent by adjudicator Joan Marr, the first time in 35 years she has awarded perfect scores. ***** A Toolamba farmer has been commended for his development of wildlife habitat. Mr Robert Pogue was awarded a certificate under the 1988 tree care program. The program was organised by ABC’s Countrywide and was sponsored by the Commonwealth Government through the National Tree Program. Mr G Morvell, national manager of Greening Australia, said, “The entries provided a beneficial review of people’s experience with the conservation and development of wildlife habitat in a wide range of situations.” A selection of entries was filmed by Countrywide and will be broadcast later in the year.”

Crime Stoppers receive information from the community; they format the information and then forward it to the police station or specialist unit for them to action. That station or unit is then accountable to take the necessary action to conclude the Crime Stopper file.

WARTIME INTERNMENT CAMPS In both world wars, Australia detained people from many parts of the world, not least from Australia itself. For those who favoured and practiced internment, the logic appeared impeccable – in times of crisis, national security must be the first priority. For those who found themselves imprisoned, their treatment often seemed bewildering, even absurd. Their ‘crime’ typically comprised nothing more than being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Two newly arrived books at the Tatura Museum touch on life at the Tatura Internment Camps Published by the National Library of Australia‘Captured Lives’ peers behind the barb wire veil that was drawn around people deemed threats to Australia’s security, both civilian internees and prisoners of war. It observes the state of despair that afflicted so many, but it is also a witness to resilience, creativity and a profound faith in the possibility of building new lives after the war.

‘Dunera Lives: A Visual History’ reminds the reader that World War Two was so much more nuanced that simply a battle between Axis and the Allies, so many shades of grey rather than just ‘good’ and ‘bad’. In July 1940, about 2000 men from Germany and Austria were sent to Australia from Britain as detainees. These men were Jewish and Christian, pro and anti-Nazi, they were writers, painter, musicians and workers. They were just ordinary people, trying to escape the conflict and were forced to suffer maltreatment both on the HMT Dunera and in the camps in which they were interred. This is a beautifully sad book, well-spaced with images and text. It gives us a glimpse into a war time world that you don’t normally get to see, one that is important we don’t forget.

This second book is published by Monash University Publishing.

This is an exciting advance as information can be collected and submitted on the street and in a timely manner. Motorists are reminded of the road rule first introduced on July 1, 2017 to improve safety for emergency and enforcement workers.

You must slow down to a speed that would enable you to stop safely when approaching and passing enforcement, emergency or escort vehicles that are stationary or moving slowly (less than 10 km/h) and have either red and blue flashing lights, magenta or purple flashing lights, an alarm sounding.

Incidents on our roads place first responders and other involved at a high risk of being struck by passing vehicles or debris. The rule means improved safety for emergency and enforcement workers who are performing work on the road or roadside as well as others present at the scene.

Motorists who breach this road rule can be issued with a fine of $272.05 with a minimum court penalty of $777.30.

You must not exceed 40 km/h when passing the vehicle and not increase your speed until a safe distance from the scene. The road rule does not apply to vehicles on the opposite side of a

TATURA SENIOR CITIZENS Picnic In The Park We will be conducting an Open Day BBQ in the park and Clubrooms, including afternoon activities. The event is free and open to the public from midday. Games include bowls, pool, cards, quoits and disc bowls.

Members are requested to help out on the day from 10.30am.

We have a trip to Castlemaine on Friday 28 September, and one to Hanging Rock on Friday 26 October and another to ‘The Odd Jug’ at Ruffy, and Longwood on Friday 23 November. All trips are $30 per person which includes morning tea. All other meals are at your own expense.

Other important dates are; Dec. 12 Christmas lunch 12 noon Dec. 15 Clean-up day at the Club rooms, time to be confirmed, all hands on deck.

Birthdays coming up include Merle King 25th Sept. and in October Bob Langton 5th, Beryl Rollinson 20th and Angie Serra 26th.

QUIZ answers Ray Fleming with his Award

TATURA ROTARY CLUB Rotarian Ray Fleming was made a Paul Harris Fellow for his services to Rotary by the Tatura Rotary Club. This is one of the highest recognitions in Rotary. It is named after Paul Harris, the founder of the Rotary organization.

Ray has been a member since 2009, when he was involved with Unifoods Tatura and since that time he has held a number of portfolios within the Rotary club. Ray was president in 2012.

His work and dedication to Rotary projects has been recognized by this award. He has been an untiring worker for the Rotary Art Show, Dairy Week, Tatura 200 bike ride and other Rotary projects. He has been a wonderful ambassador for Rotary during his overseas trips. Ray’s present portfolio has been that of Bulletin editor, keeping all members up to date with the happenings in the club every week.

Congratulations Ray, you are a very worthy recipient.

CUBBY NEWS Tatura Community Cubby House Occasional Care-You can find us next door to the Tatura Children’s Centre in the orange building on Kerferd Street.

We would like to welcome the new families who have joined our service.

The orange wall and signage is coming along and we would like to thank Naomi Kerr for her wonderful work. The children are very excited as they have Cubby House t-shirts to wear, which are a funky orange and white tie died design to match the orange theme of the building. We thank the parents for jumping on board with the new cute polo’s. We would also like to thank all the families and community who have supported the chocolate fundraiser. To date we have raised over $500, which we are putting towards new toys for the children. This term is coming to an end and we are jumping on the football finals bandwagon with a footy dress up day.

We have vacancies for Term 4 so please drop in and pick up your enrolment forms from the Community House or get them from our website www.tatcom.com.au . The Cubby will be closed over the holidays but the Community House will be open in the second week. The flexibility of our Occasional care means that your child can stay for one or up to five hours and you only pay for what you use! Bookings are essential and available Wednesdays and Thursdays 9am-2pm. Drop in at any time with your child and stay for an hour or two if you wish. We know that parents and their children transition to childcare very differently and we are happy to support that change.

ELM TREES NEED TO BE CHECKED Greater Shepparton City Council will conduct Elm leaf beetle control over the next few weeks to ensure Elm trees are kept healthy coming into spring. The process involves Council injecting the Elm tree root system with a chemical to fight the infection of beetles; this is not invasive for the tree and the treatment generally lasts three years.

Greater Shepparton City Council Acting Director Infrastructure Maree Walker said, “Council is responsible for about 220 Elm trees planted throughout Greater Shepparton. The Elm leaf beetle creates a series of small holes in the leaves which destroys the veins so the tree leaves appear skeleton like. The beetles’ larvae can be visible depending on the season and the weather conditions. Trees affected by the Elm leaf

beetle will have no major leaf canopy by summer, so there is no shade which doesn’t allow the tree to store its energy reserves for the following year’s growth. Therefore, late August and September is the ideal time for treatment to occur to ensure trees are protected well before summer.

Council is asking residents to do their bit to assist in controlling the pest.

If you have any Elm trees on your property, now is the best time to reduce the risk of elm leaf beetles, so make sure you check your Elm trees for any signs of the Elm leaf beetle and if treatment is required please visit your local nursery”.

CAR CLUB FUN RUN GV Fins and Fenders Car Club had an enjoyable fun run to Devenish and Goorambat to check out some silo art. The weather was very kind with plenty of sunshine, though the wind was certainly chilly. Our first port of call was at Devenish, where we found a First World War Nurse and Modern-Day Combat Medic on their silos. A lunch of roast meat and vegetables was enjoyed at the Hotel opposite, after which we continued on to Goorambat. Their silos had a painting of a Barking Owl, ‘Milli’, who is a resident of Healesville Sanctuary and a rural scene. We then checked out the mural at the Uniting Church, ‘Sophia’, which was completed by street artist Adanate as part of the 2017 Benalla Wall to Wall street art festival. Most people are interested in seeing photographs of the different

silo art around the country but I was surprised at how different it was to actually see them in real life.

Well worth a visit. We came home via Toolamba where we stopped for a final drink together at the hotel before heading off to our different homes.

I am including an article written by one of the youngest club members while at Toolamba. Trinity is 8 years old and wrote, "Today the whole car club went on a club run! There were blue cars, white cars and a few little grey ones. But no matter what, there were cars everywhere! We went to Dookie first then had lunch in Devenish. Stopped at Goorambat to look at the silos and finished our day at Toolamba!" Well done Trinity!
