Maureen Florence Johnson 1.1.1949 – 18.9.2015 Maureen had a sparkling personality and a lovely smile which will be greatly missed by everybody who knew her.

Maureen volunteered as a proof reader at The Bulletin and was a popular member of Probus.

She will be sadly missed by her daughter Cheryl and two grandsons, Dylan and Tate who were the pride and joy of her life.

AUSTRALIA DAY AWARD NOMINATIONS

Nominations are now open for the 2016 Australia Day Awards and Greater Shepparton City Council is urging residents in the municipality to nominate our hardworking community members. Nominations are sought for Citizen of the Year and Young Citizen of the Year (aged under 30) and Community Event of the Year for Arcadia, Dookie, Mooroopna, Murchison, Shepparton, Tatura and Toolamba. Nominations are also sought for other categories including sports, education and community service awards.

Greater Shepparton Mayor Dennis Patterson encouraged residents to nominate friends, neighbours or colleagues who had volunteered their time to make a difference to their community. “We all know people who just get out there and make things happen, lend a hand when the chips are down or go above and beyond the call of duty when it comes to supporting other people, a cause or the community,” Cr Patterson said. “Council’s Australia Day Awards are a fitting tribute for these quiet achievers, and I urge anyone who has ever thought someone’s contribution deserves some recognition to nominate them for the 2016 awards.”

TIRED OF BEING RAILROADED Federal Member for Murray, Dr Sharman Stone along with Cathy McGowan, Member for Indi, has met with the Victorian Minister for Public Transport and Employment to talk about the issues of poor service rail lines between Shepparton and Melbourne and Albury and Melbourne.

“As many people know, we continue to have problems with train services, including the cleanliness of our trains, the inability to connect to wireless internet, poor air conditioning on trains, late arrival and departure times, stations without PA systems and much more. It is important we have clean reliable and safe access to Melbourne through our train services,” Sharman Stone said. “Minister Allan is soon to release the first Regional Network Development Plan for Victoria; many from the Goulburn Valley participated in the consultation. The plan should provide the first regional public transport strategy for Victoria. Minister Allan was reminded of

the poor condition of the rail line, especially between Violet Town and Seymour where canteen staff were taken off at Violet Town and put back at Seymour because of the rough ride. Regional Victorians deserve to have world-class rail services and I have stressed this point to Minister Allan, who being a regional MP herself understood the need. Goulburn Valley residents need more than the 19th century style train service which is not sufficient for the fourth largest regional city in Victoria. Earlier this year I met with Premier Daniel Andrews regarding this train issue and also our devastating water problems, he made a commitment to come to Shepparton to speak to me and my constituents about these issues. Cathy and I have also met with the Federal Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, Warren Truss, given much of the main line sleeper upgrades used Federal funding. We explained the work appeared inadequate. I will continue to push for the best possible services for all Murray residents.”

MURCHISON AND DISTRICT SENIOR CITIZENS CLUB Our new financial year began July 1, so there is no better time to join the club than now.

We are hoping to improve activities at the club during the next few months. Therefore, we are asking for input from the community as to what people would like as activities to encourage more members.

Membership is still only $2.00 for 12 months which is great value when one considers the alternatives.

Last meeting was really disappointing considering we had a guest speaker from Greater Shepparton City Council who was very informative about the new 'green bin' arrangements. It was disappointing, as the meeting was open to the public and only one member from the public attended and wondered if he was in the right place due to the lack of people. Now that speaks for itself surely! At least one member of the public

was interested enough about the environment to attend and learn what the council were offering. This same person also stayed and enjoyed a very challenging game of indoor bowls.

Next meeting will be Monday, November 2.

Please note that the new starting time for this meeting will be 1.00 p.m. as we now have a games afternoon of indoor bowls and either beetles or cards after the meeting, thus trying to make meetings more interesting. This will be followed by afternoon tea for those interested in staying for a cuppa and a chat.

Please note we now have a new committee trying to improve activities at the club but they need support from ALL members as well as the Murchison and district community. How many times do we have to request support?

The community events calendar is in full swing and getting more and more events listed on it every day. Don’t forget you are more than welcome, as a group or organisation in the local community, to submit events for the calendar. You can pop in, phone us or go to our website and fill in an extremely simple form. It’s all free. The more people who use the calendar, the more useful it becomes.

The whole idea is for the calendar to be a one stop for the local community to check dates, events, arrange their own dates and see what’s happening around the town.

The silly season is advancing swiftly so all the more reason to put everyone’s events on the community calendar to avoid clashes with other events and to get yourselves along to some restive fun.

On other matters, our Occasional Childcare still has places available. This is a great way to have time out or go to work while your kids are having fun and enjoying playing with other kids in a safe and stimulating environment.

One-off days or term bookings are all ok with us, so leading up to Christmas, consider our services and keep everyone happy.

Term 4 is in full swing, but it’s not too late to join in with some of the more casual classes, just ask us.

RELAY for LIFE 2015 The Relay for Life Team held an afternoon tea at the Tatura Gallery on Monday September 21. Forty ladies and gentlemen came along to listen to the guest speaker, Helen Newton from Murchison.

Helen told the audience about her recent trip, a cruise, of the ancient Mediterranean, taking in the Centenary Tour of Gallipoli and her emotional experience at the ANZAC Day Service at ANZAC Cove. Her story was amazing. She and her husband had family links which made the trip unforgettable for them. Fay and Kerryn presented Helen with a hamper donated by Unilever.

OXALIS WIND QUINTET On Sunday, November 29, the Oxalis Wind Quintet is coming to Victory Hall Tatura as guests of Friends of Victory Hall to present a concert comprising Sandy Sexton – Flute, Eric Andersen – Oboe, Marla Swift – Clarinet, Steven Sargant – Horn and Julie Holmes – Bassoon. Feature vocalist with the Quintet is Kerry Hogan. She has sung the lead role in all the popular musicals and is sure to delight the audience with her renditions. The members of Oxalis Wind Quintet are drawn from various parts of Victoria with Horn player Steven coming from Coomboona.

The aim of the group is to play music written for the classical wind quintet and although each instrument has a distinctive tone, there is a myriad of interesting ways to combine them, resulting in many different tonal qualities, from mellow to strident and everything else in between.

There is a surprisingly large repertoire for this instrument grouping and one of the members, Eric Andersen, has long been active in producing new arrangements for wind quintet. Some of his charts have now been published and are available to other quintets across the world.

The concerts are not usually stiffly formal affairs, and the musicians welcome interaction from the audience so come along and enjoy the fine music. Admission is $15.00 including afternoon tea. COMMUNITY MARKET IN STUART MOCK PLACE Once again the Tatura Community House is leading the way by adding a community market in Stuart Mock Place, Francis Street, to their very successful monster garage sale program. The first of six markets started off in Stuart Mock Place on Saturday, October 24. Future Markets are planned for November 28 and December 19, 2015, then every Saturday of the Month in 2016.

Stuart Mock Place is the ideal spot for a market, right in the centre of Tatura, safe and friendly with toilets nearby and all the shopping you need is within walking distance. Come along and start the day with a sausage from the BBQ, then go and hunt down the bargains. When you’re all shopped out grab a drink or a sandwich from one of the fine food shops in the main street and sit and listen to the music.

NEWSFLASH! Next years Monster Garage sale, to be held on Saturday, May 2, 2016, is going to be even bigger.

We will now be including all our farming community surrounding TATURA who will be able to have their own garage sales on farm. These events attract many visitors to our town. Watch this space for updates.

THE TATURA FILM SOCIETY

The Tatura Film Society is a relatively new group that began in March this year. The membership gathers on the third Monday of each month to watch films from a variety of genre including old and new movies from across the world. Most are in English, a few are subtitled, many challenge your beliefs and understanding of what is happening in the world and some are just funny with a love story that underpins the comedy. Some are all of the above. The opening movie was the First Grader, a true story set in Kenya; another was The Hundred Foot Journey, set in France.

The importance of the group is to connect with other people from the Tatura town and its surrounds, who have a common interest in films.

The doors of the Mechanics Institute Hall in Hogan Street Tatura open at 7.30pm and a cuppa, biscuit and chat awaits those that attend. The Tatura Film Society is affiliated with the Federation of Victorian Film Societies which supports the committee with guidance on films to offer, successful ways to run the film nights and a variety of film critics and happenings from across Victoria.

‘The Hundred Year Old Man Who Climbed out the Window and Disappeared’ was screened on October 19. Based on the internationally best-selling novel by Jonas Jonasson, this is the story of a 100-year-old man who decides it's not too late to start over, starring comedian Robert Gustafsson and directed by Felix Herngren. Married with two young sons, Ruby and her family enjoy the freedom, open spaces and cultural diversity that the Goulburn Valley has to offer. Ruby and her husband, who is a Medical Professional at Goulburn Valley Health, are involved in local sporting clubs and activities with their children, and when she has time, Ruby enjoys painting and drawing, gardening and cooking traditional dishes from her homeland for her family.

Dr. Ruby is very much looking forward to meeting the people of Tatura and being able to continue the tradition of quality, accessible, medical care for the whole family, which the doctors of Tatura Medical Centre have provided to the community of Tatura for over 30 years.

TATURA GIRL GUIDE NEWS On Sunday September 13, Guides from all over the region attended the Christian Fellowship Church in Shepparton. With Guiding films showing as we arrived we all felt very welcome. Following the service, the girls enjoyed the many outdoor activities provided.

Over a hundred folk from the gathering sat down to a delicious luncheon which the church provided and which everyone appreciated.

On September 18, the Tatura Guides held a sleepover with outdoor cooking. No need for electricity for a Sunday roast or grandma’s plum pudding. There’s nothing like drinking a Milo around a campfire and exchanging stories. Craft work and much more was also enjoyed. The Guides loved the challenge, especially with no dish washer, only a huge basin to wash the dishes. Thanks to the mums who stayed over dinner to help.

The following week our three Guides Katharine Wagner, Lizzy and Moira Smith and Leader Cate Thomas set off for Bunya Jamboree in Queensland. A great time was had by all, making many new friends and pen pals.

On October 11 we held Val McNabb’s Cookoff. Val was a much loved and very active Guide leader for many years, catering for Guide functions in her own home. The Tatura Guides didn’t bring home the Rolling Pin

Katharine, Gloria and Audrey practising their cooking skills Trophy but were near the top. The Leaders were very proud of their efforts and the way they presented their dishes.

During October the Guides will also be learning new canoeing skills and safety on water with qualified testers.

Leader Lisa welcomed four new Guides to the group who will now begin their three week’s trial to see if they would like to be part of World Guiding.

At the end of the last term we said thank you to Sam Crowe who resigned due to family commitments. Our new Guide Leader, Lisa Wagner presented Sam with a bunch of fresh flowers and a card from the Guides.

The Victory Hall in Tatura is taking on a new persona for a weekend in November. The Tatura PAWS committee has commissioned the grand old lady to host a café outside the front of the hall during the art show later this month.

Tatura PAWS - Pet Art Work Show is an innovative art show bringing together families, pets and community. Pets have walked through a paint runway, to create their own art masterpiece at Pet Workshops held throughout the year. All the finished artworks by the dogs, cats, horses, a pig, chooks, a rabbit, ducks and more will be on display, with many available for purchase.

The café will be serving light meals including Devonshire teas with both an indoor and outdoor area for service. The outdoor setting offers a pet friendly area available and ‘pet sitting’ is available free of charge so patrons can enter the hall to view artworks.

A recent Victorian Police Association survey of 3,526 police members has asked a number of questions regarding their on the job experiences. The survey found 94.16 percent of police said that dealing with drug affected offenders is more prevalent than three years ago but only 52.45 percent of police believe they’re equipped enough to deal with current levels of substance abuse.

“Within the last three years, 91% have experienced personal violence, 71% have been assaulted on the job and 80% feel more vulnerable and at risk compared with three years ago. So the abuse and assaults are worse now than they have ever been,” Federal Member for Murray, Dr Sharman Stone said.

“In this survey, almost 8% of police say they have been diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder; and 81% experience stress as a direct result of their job. 86% of police say offender attitudes towards police have changed for the worse in the last three years.

COMBATTING DOMESTIC VIOLENCE The Australian Government funded Smart Phone App ‘Daisy’ has received its latest update making more functions available. Daisy was created earlier this year for women who are victims of domestic violence. Federal Member for Murray, Dr Sharman Stone said the app gives women more information about services, with more features including translated information across 28 languages, text-to-voice functionality for women with a vision impairment or low literacy and an SMS function for women living in rural or remote areas.

“We must make providing support for women experiencing domestic violence as easy as possible. Every situation is different and for many women it is hard to seek help. The updated app will now be more relevant and more accessible for more women, especially those who find it hard to ask for help. Daisy provides women with an easy-to-use list of specialist sexual assault, domestic and family violence services in their state and local area. The app also includes special features such as a ‘Get Help’ function that allows users to quickly call 000 and a ‘Quick Exit’ button to leave screens containing service information,” Sharman Stone said. “Daisy has been developed with input from all State and Territory Governments to get the best information possible for any woman.”

Clearly we need more police now than before. However, the Victorian Government’s response to the dangers now facing police is to require virtually all call-outs to be undertaken by two, not one police officer. While that is obviously safer and necessary, it means a one-man country police station is practically hamstrung.

This two police at all times policy can only work when you have significant numbers of extra police available. Otherwise you effectively halve the number of call-outs police can attend too. It is right to try to increase the safety of our police, but we must also tackle the problem of rampant drug and alcohol abuse, and we need more police recruited. I am urging the Victorian Government to look beyond the suburbs of Melbourne to protect the regional people of Victoria and the police who protect them,” Sharman Stone said.

GEOFF WRIGHT This month I have been talking to Geoff Wright, a very quiet achiever. He is one of our CFA volunteers and a Life Member of the Tatura Brigade, having been with the CFA for 55 years. Geoff started service in Merrigum before moving to Tatura. During his 26 years as Captain, he founded the Ladies Auxiliary, originally to give the young mums a form of socializing with a common interest while their men were away fighting fires. Nowadays the women raise money for the CFA as well as enjoying the social aspect of their group.

Geoff is proud of the amazing progress the CFA has made over the years. There was no personal protective equipment when he started and he related the story of one particular time when they had a very enthusiastic young member who was hurrying to get to the fire, furiously riding his push bike.....still in his pyjamas! Geoff’s wife, Marie, commented on having seen the local baker running across the

road still pulling his pants up. Today of course they change at the Fire Station into overalls and boots but back then they had nothing.

Though there is still a siren at the Station to warn people of a fire, members are also given a pager that notifies them of the type of fire and its location. All members quickly report to the Fire Station and make up a crew of five for each truck.

Geoff also spoke about the Gippsland Fires in 1967. They were away for days and slept wherever they could: be it on nature strips, in a barn or their truck. Their wives didn’t know how their partners were doing which would have been very worrying and is so different from today with the progress of communications. When Geoff and his two sons were at the Ash Wednesday fires, his wife, Marie, was very concerned and was grateful when someone from Shepparton brigade arrived at the house to let her know that her family was okay.

I unearthed an interesting fact concerning sandwiches being made for the men fighting fires. When a person is overheated (as obviously one would be fighting a fire) the chemical reaction from cucumber sandwiches actually makes them ill and these sandwiches have been banned from being served in operational conditions.

Geoff is in a support role now that he is older, working on Radio/Pump etc. and is no longer operational when fighting fires. Volunteering with the CFA has been most rewarding for Geoff, especially if they have been able to save lives or property. ‘Good saves’ they call them. He said the hardest part is seeing people suffering from a personal loss.

Within the CFA ‘running’ is a term used for championship competitions (these were

previously known as ‘Demos) and these were what first started Geoff off in the organization and it is interesting to note that the Tatura Juniors have been state champions for the last couple of years.

Geoff and Marie have been married 56 years and have two sons, Doug and Brian, who are also married; one with three children and one with two. Geoff has many hobbies and is always busy when not working at Valley Auto Parts or attending to CFA business. He enjoys carpentry and is still working on their house as well as helping his son build his own. He is a car enthusiast and a member of the Rev N Rec Club at Rushworth, owning a Triumph 2.5PI and F100. Living on a property in the bush and being fire conscious, he also spends a lot of time working on his tractor to keep things clear and safe. He used to shoot and play football in his younger years as well as joining in Car Rallies with his son, Doug, who now does the same thing with his own son, leaving Geoff to be a most interested spectator.

When asked what advice Geoff would give to anyone thinking of joining the CFA, he said, "Jump in with both feet! It is a very rewarding volunteering organization. The comradeship amongst the crews is really terrific because those who stay develop that."

So if you think you might like to join this friendly group, just turn up at the Fire Station on any Monday night after 7.30 p.m. They have their meeting once a month and the other weeks are training. The current Captain, Graeme Dean and any other members there will certainly make you feel most welcome.

Everybody Has A Story CONFESSIONS OF A NEWCOMER I remember the day well: it was mid-2003, I was sixty-two years old and I was rumbling up the Hume Highway in my 1986 Ford panel van at 112 km per hour. How do I remember this? Because that old 1986 Ford always rumbled and I’m always two or three km over the speed limit on the freeways, just because I can. If that tells you something about me, you’re probably right. You may well ask why a sixty-two year old was driving around in a panel van. The answer is because I couldn’t afford a ‘Sandman’ panel van when I was young enough to utilize it for the purpose they were made for. In the seventies they were the in-thing, every young stud had to have one. By the time I could afford one, they had stopped making the damn things, so, many years later, I had to settle for an old Ford panel van and dream of days gone by.

However, the reason I remember the day so vividly is because I was on my way to Tatura to visit a newfound friend. This was a new experience for me as, up until a few months previously, I didn’t know where Tatura was although I did know about Tatura because of the gold butter packets served with your bread roll in clubs and restaurants.

Rumbling along in the old panel van, listening to Neil Diamond belting out ‘Beautiful Noise’, I almost missed the Murchison off-ramp but once over the bridge and through Murchison, a sign said nineteen kilometres to Tatura. “Do they sell the little gold packets of butter in all the shops?” I wondered. I turned off Neil Diamond and started to think about getting to Tatura for the lunch date with my friend. I usually allow ‘getting lost’ time, but I couldn’t get lost in Tatura, could I? I cruised on past a sign that said Dhurringile

prison and thought, “So that’s where it is.” I knew about the prison but had not associated it with Tatura. “I should be a crim,” I thought.

“They live in a better house than I do. What a magnificent mansion.”

A water tower soon showed up ahead and I drove on past the racecourse and started to wonder where the main street was. My friend had told me to turn right into the main street but all the streets seemed to go to the right so I just took the next turn. Oops, no shops here, so I coasted to a stop to reconnoitre. I had the Tatura library on my right and a vacant block with some big buildings a way over on my left. Spying an intersection ahead, I rolled down there and took a left.

There she stood, right in front of me, the lady of my dreams. It was love at first sight and I gazed at her longingly, admiring her majestic classic form. Confident of her beauty, she boldly returned my blatant stare. Only in Tatura can one stop in the middle of an intersection and gaze at the scenery. Where I came from, it would have caused traffic chaos and probably a massive fine.

Up top, one gable read ‘Mechanics Institute’ while the other read ‘Victory Hall’. I sat there staring in wonder at the history contained within those monumental walls. “I bet you know everything about this town,” I thought.

My thoughts were interrupted by a gentle toot from behind and I was reminded of the primary reason for my visit. Now there were two cars driving down the main street on this fine sunny day and I decided that I could get used to this.

Soon I was sitting at a table, eating a lovely roast lamb lunch and enjoying the company of my very charming Tatura friend. We shared our life stories and found so much in common

Leaving in the late afternoon, I drove past the first lady I had met in Tatura. Perhaps I’m a dreamer, but I’m sure I heard her quietly say, “Come back soon.” And come back I did, many times in the next few months, to talk to the two Tatura ladies who had entered my life. Sometime during 2004, the ladies and I decided all this travelling was silly so I picked myself up and moved to Tatura. So now it’s 2015 and I’m married to one of the ladies and help look after the other although there is some confusion at times as to which lady I actually married.

2015 POPPY APPEAL for our country’s fallen heroes, but it helps raise vital funds to assist past and present servicemen and women and their dependents in times of need. Poppies were among the first plants to bloom in the devastated battlefields of France and Belgium, and since 1921 they have been used in remembrance of those who fell during times of war. As a wave of young veterans are finding themselves and their families in need of assistance, it is now as important as ever to donate to the Poppy Appeal, according to Mr Smith.

Mr. Smith went on to explain that the help provided to veterans varies dramatically and is tailored to each and every case, but it can include direct financial assistance, medical expenses and the provision of mobility aids, home maintenance, food vouchers, education of dependents, funeral arrangements, the transition to civilian employment and advocacy to help secure compensation.

“We know that selling half a million poppies is a massive target, but when it comes to giving, Aussies, and Victorians in particular, are among the most generous in the world,” said Mr Smith.

Often when I meet people and say I work at the Anglican Church they ask, “Which one is that?”

I reply, “The one on Francis Street.”

“Oh, the one with the wonderful fete that has a yummy cake stall each year?”

“Yep, that’s the one.”

So, whether you’ve been often, or this will be the first time – it’s happening again, the Tatura Anglican Church annual fete is just around the corner. This amazing event will happen on Saturday October 31st from 9am-1pm at the Tatura Anglican Church Hall, corner of Francis and Kerferd Streets.

This year we’ve renamed it the All Saints Produce Market to better reflect what we have available – fresh fruit and veggies, the amazing and famous Tatura cake stall of homemade treats, the plant stall, handmade clothes and goodies, and also for the first time, this year will feature fresh flowers thanks to The Flower Shop Tatura, cheese tasting and much more.

The church will also be open this year to give people the opportunity to pop past and pray, or to talk with Rev. Jude if they wish.

In other news, mainly music is back for term 4 each Wednesday at 10am. CATARACTS IN OLDER DOGS Cataracts are one of the most common eye abnormalities in older dogs and are the leading cause of vision loss. A cataract is any cloudiness within the lens of the eye which causes a loss of transparency. In a normal healthy eye, the lens is the structure that focuses light rays on the retina, which transmits the image to the brain allowing dogs to ‘see’. The lens is normally composed of water and proteins that are arranged in a certain way that keeps the lens clear so that light can pass through.

Cataracts form because of clumping of the lens proteins, which cause cloudiness in the lens that stops light from passing through.

Cataracts can be inherited and occur with age, or can be secondary to an underlying disease, most commonly diabetes. Over 75% of diabetic dogs will develop severe blinding cataracts within the first year of diagnosis.

These can develop rapidly, sometimes within a matter of days.

Unfortunately, once cataracts have developed, there is no known medical treatment. Even diabetic cataracts tend to be permanent, despite starting insulin treatment. Treatment for cataracts requires surgery and unfortunately this is a specialist procedure which is quite expensive. The good news is that cataracts and blindness most often occur slowly, allowing your dog to gradually adjust to their loss of vision. People with cataracts describe a loss of sharpness to the image, blurring between objects and less vivid colours but they can still see something, and even if your dog is almost totally blind, chances are if they are kept in familiar surroundings they will adjust and still have good quality of life.

CAN YOU PLEASE EXPLAIN THIS TO ME?

I was sitting with Agnes in our usual spot for our usual Wednesday afternoon tea at the food court and as we sat, we chatted about the state of the world, the price of groceries and updated one another on our families, grandchildren and life in general. As I sipped my tea, made the way I like it with just the right amount of sugar and not too much milk, my eyes fell upon a group of women sauntering into the dining area and looking around for somewhere to sit. I almost spat my tea all over Agnes when I saw what most of them were wearing, or weren’t wearing for that matter.

For some reason unknown to me, and I could only suppose unknown to the majority of the population, these girls seemed to have left home and stepped out into full public view wearing only thick, black stockings along with short tops. As I coughed and spluttered, I looked at Agnes who was busy putting the last of the jam on her scones. “Can you believe what those girls are wearing?” I whispered loudly across the table.

Agnes, oblivious to everything except weighing up whether to also use up the last of her cream, followed my bulging eyeballs as I tilted my head in the direction of the young girls. “What on earth are you talking about?” she asked.

I tilted my head a few more times in the girls direction, as Agnes is often a little slow on the uptake. “Look at what those girls are wearing.”

The group of girls were now hovering around the Bakery stall trying to decide what to eat, not that any of them needed any more baked food I might add, as I now had full view of their rear ends. I shook my head and said to Agnes. “Over there, look, those girls don’t have any pants on. Surely you can see that.”

After a moment or two, Agnes finally worked out what I was talking about. “Oh,” she said, way too casually for my liking, “they’re called leggings.” I was mystified. What on earth were leggings and why had these girls thought they could wear them as though they were pants? “Oh yes,” continued Agnes, “they’re all the rage and not only with the young ones. A lot of older women are also wearing them.”

I was mortified as I stared at Agnes. “But they’re not pants, they’re undergarments! These women are almost naked. I can see just about everything. They don’t leave anything to the imagination. It’s disgusting.” I asked Agnes why they weren’t wearing skirts or pants and why nobody had arrested them for indecent exposure.

“You’re just an old fuddy-duddy, Merle,” she replied. “You’ve got to keep up with the times. They even have leggings that look like jeans. I think they’re called jeggings.”

“Jeggings? You can call them as many fancy names as you like but they’re still stockings. There’s no way they could be considered pants.” I shook my head in dismay as I wondered once again what the world was coming to. Agnes just laughed at me then picked up her last scone, with way too much jam and cream on it, and stuffed it into her mouth. Agnes was obviously no help, so can someone please explain why anybody would think that leggings were pants and then wear them in public? Anyone?

The pets of Tatura and District have been busy putting their artistic talents to good use and their artwork is about to be unveiled. Over the past ten months, cats, dogs, horses, ferrets, rabbits, chooks, ducks, a pig, a lizard, a guinea pig and even a python have been applying paint to canvas, producing masterpieces. Some had to be encouraged to show their talent while others were only too happy to put paw to canvas.

The Tatura PAWS Pet Art Work Show is on at the Mechanics Hall, Hogan St Tatura on November 20-22. A gala opening night will be held on the Friday. This is a show not to be missed!

FREE ACTIVITY IN THE PARK Dhurringile Tennis Club registered with City of Greater Shepparton, Free Activities in the Park-ANZ Hot Shots which was held on Thursday, October 8. Participation Leaders from Tennis Victoria, Sue Dundas (based in Bendigo) and Nattalie Brown (based in Shepparton) were on hand and delivered a fantastic Hot Shots program. The event took place at Mactier Park for all community members and attendance was free.

Club spokesperson, Lisa Niglia stated, “What a great way to not only promote ANZ Hot Shots junior tennis, but to get more kids and their families involved in a sport that is currently struggling in our area.”

The opportunity to have it in a park in the centre of Tatura was a great way for all community members to view and participate. The children were entertained with the ‘whirly ball tent’, mini tennis and many hit-the-target games. It was a great turn out with approx. 60 people in attendance. Children from Sacred Heart, Tatura Primary, Murchison primary, Toolamba Primary and Guthrie Street primary along with their families attended the free event. DTC would like to sincerely thank Tennis Victoria participation leaders, Sue Dundas and Nattalie Browne for giving up their time to support the event as well as Brady Bourke from Tatura Family Butchers for the kind donations of 100 sausages and Tatura Bakery and Lunches for donating the bread. Members of the community were treated to a free sausage sizzle. Thanks to Tatura’s Men’s Shed and Rotary club and Tom Perry for organising the BBQ. Finally, thanks also to the City of Greater Shepparton for promoting the event and organising power to the site. DTC will also be volunteering and

Interviews with John

Suzanna Sheed My interview this month is with our local Member of Parliament, Suzanna Sheed.

John: People today know of you as a politician but tell me about your life before politics.

Suzanna: My parents were farmers at Jerilderie and I spent my early childhood there before attending boarding school in Melbourne. I spent my final year at Canterbury Girls High School and then attended university where I studied law. I was married while at university and then moved to Darwin with my husband and worked for the Northern Territory government in their law department. Once my husband completed his psychiatric degree, we moved back to Shepparton in the early eighties.

The location was ideal because it was halfway between the family farm and Melbourne. When he died in 1994, I decided to stay in Shepparton as I had two young children to care for and a job that I really enjoyed and then in 2000, I remarried to Peter Eastaugh, the paediatrician.

John: Have you always been actively involved in the community?

Suzanna: I’ve been practising law in Shepparton for 35 years and have always been involved with different groups and committees. In 2000 I did the Williamson Community Leadership Program which is similar to the Fairley Leadership Program. You spend one day a fortnight with people in seminars dealing with wide ranging issues such as health, welfare, water management, banking and the arts which gives you exposure to a wider picture of the world outside that of your own community.

John: Did that fire up your imagination?

Suzanna: It certainly did for me. It was the first time I truly grasped the idea of globalisation, that we were part of a much bigger world than Shepparton or the Goulburn Valley or Victoria or Australia.

John: Tell me about the Fairley Leadership Program.

Suzanna: I was on the board for many years and then took over the role of chairperson from Ross McPherson. There have been several more since me. It has now become entrenched in our community as a successful leadership program. There wouldn’t be a local board or organisation that didn’t have somebody on it who has completed the program. One of the benefits is it connects people from diverse backgrounds, and when one of them has a problem, they’re able to talk to somebody who can offer assistance.

John: Did you specialise in any particular area of law?

Suzanna: I chose family law and became a family law specialist in 1993. I was also an independent children’s lawyer on the legal aid panel for twenty years. When a court had a really difficult case, they would appoint me to act for the children, independently of the lawyers acting for the mother and father.

John: So no matter what decision you make …

Suzanna: You don’t make everyone happy. I don’t make the decision, the judge does that, but because it’s an adversary system, the mother makes her case and the father makes his, but often there’s additional information that the judge wouldn’t be aware of unless the children’s lawyer went and hunted it down and put it before the court so that the judge is then aware of all the facts.

John: It would have been difficult working full-time and also raising two young children, especially after your first husband died.

Suzanna: I worked part time when they were little and then I left the firm I was with and opened my own practice. I was able to manage that from an office at home until they got a bit older. I then opened an office in Wyndham Street and as the business grew, I employed several staff to assist me and in 2011, joined with another firm to create SMR Legal.

However, because I got elected, I’ve had to step aside from that.

John: Do you miss it?

Suzanna: I miss the ability to sit down with a problem and work my way through it to a sensible and logical conclusion. In politics, you’re continually jumping from one issue to another. I used to be able to sit down with a file and work my way through the reports but now I’m constantly interrupted and I spend my time running from one thing to another. However that’s just part of the challenge of organising your time and I’ve got really good staff to assist me with that which helps make life a little easier.

John: I suppose there’s an expectation that you’ll be across everything.

Suzanna: Yes, and that you’ll be everywhere all the time. People have high expectations of you attending anything they invite you to, that you’ll have a full understanding of their company or organisation and that you’ll give a speech. It can be quite daunting at times but I’m really enjoying it.

John: I get the impression that you don’t mind making a speech.

Suzanna: I’m comfortable now but before I was elected, I was content for somebody else to do it. I was quite capable of making a speech because you stand up in court and make them all the time but it wasn’t my preference.

John: Have your skills as a lawyer helped you to become a better politician?

Suzanna: To be an effective family lawyer, it’s essential that you learn to listen. I had a set routine of questions that helped me gather in all the relevant information so that I could then formulate a plan of action. As this job is so diverse and there are so many different problems, it was obvious I couldn’t be familiar with the details of all of them, so I quickly realised that I had to listen even more if I was going to be effective. Take homelessness for example. There are twenty different organisations in Shepparton dealing with people who are homeless. I had no idea there were so many people involved. So, whenever you make a decision, it’s important to listen to all of the different, and often opposing, points of view so that you understand the complete picture.

Interviews with John John: Tell me a little about your children.

Suzanna: My son Alex is twenty-nine and he’s a commercial lawyer.

He also works for SMR and he’s stepped into the breach to help with the workload caused as a result of me not being available. My daughter, Claire, who’s twenty-five, has just finished university and recently spent a year in China learning Chinese. She’s always loved the arts and theatre so now she’s working and keen to pursue her artistic passions.

John: Why did you decide to enter politics?

Suzanna: I’ve always taken an interest in politics without being a political person. I’ve always been a swinging voter, deciding to do what I felt was best at the time rather than blindly following a particular political party. Prior to the election last year, I just felt that our region wasn’t being rewarded for the 47 years of loyalty that we had shown to the National Party. It was very clear that marginal seats do much better than safe ones. Seats such as Ballarat, Bendigo and Latrobe Valley have had far more investment in their towns and improvement in their services.

When the election was announced, it was clear that the Nationals would win again even though Jeanette Powell was retiring. Her successor had been preselected and it was taken for granted that he’d be the next Member of Parliament.

John: So you decided to take him on.

Suzanna: In the run-up to the election we heard announcements such as the Premier visiting Ballarat or that a $630 million dollar package had been announced for a new hospital in Bendigo but there were no promises being made by anyone for Shepparton and it just made me angry. I felt that our vote was being taken for granted. After discussing it with my family, I spoke to a few friends and I was met with such an enthusiastic response that I decided to do it and that was just twenty-nine days before the election.

John: How difficult was the journey?

Suzanna: I was fortunate that I was able to quickly put a campaign team together of really excellent people and they did all of the work behind the scenes while I was out and about visiting different towns and talking to people. And I want to emphasise really talking to people rather than talking at them or reeling off campaign slogans. Everywhere I went I was met with the attitude of ‘good on you for having a go’. People also mentioned that they were actually interested in this election because there was somebody else to vote for which was positive reinforcement.

The campaign was hard work, day and night, attending so many events including the public forum, and many things that were outside my comfort zone.

John: I’m constantly amazed by the energy levels of politicians, particularly around election time.

Suzanna: I suppose it’s all part of being in the game, of being totally committed to your cause and being engaged when you’re doing it.

John: And what causes were you committed to?

Suzanna: We’d been lobbying for the hospital redevelopment for years and the passenger rail services are just awful compared to the other regional centres. We have four trains to Melbourne each day and three to return home and the other centres have twenty. It’s having those services that have made those cities into what they currently are. As soon as you put services into a city then you get the development and investment which would also go a long way towards addressing youth unemployment.

John: Is it difficult addressing the needs of the various interest groups in the community?

Suzanna: It’s important that people realise we’re one community. For example, I’d be asked, “What are you going to do for farmers?” and I’d say, “Well, you’ve got kids, and those kids are going to need a good education and then a job when they leave school so you are no different to anybody else. You also need a good local hospital because you could be on the tractor having a heart attack in three months’ time and you’ll need good cardiac services when that happens and you won’t get them here. Of course it’s also important to deal with specific issues that a group might have but my main theme has been that we’re all in this together.

John: It would be fair to say you weren’t the favourite to win the election so why do you think you did?

Suzanna: Obviously a whole lot of Nationals, Liberals and Labour people had to vote for me and I think that happened because I appealed to them by addressing local issues. These people were prepared to shift their allegiances and vote for an independent who was standing up for the community on the issues that mattered to them. They could also see that other communities were being promised investment and we weren’t. It shows that the electorate is not stupid and should not be taken for granted.

John: How did you feel when you realised you had won?

Suzanna: Our goal was to make this a marginal seat and really shake up the major parties and to win it was almost a shock. Naturally, I had to contemplate that I might win and make contingency plans with my work requirements and my family. In the month that followed I used to wake up in the morning and think, “Where am I and what’s happening today?” because you weren’t doing what you used to do. It’s been an amazing, exciting, daunting, sometimes scary, but most of all, very rewarding experience.

John: How do the major parties treat you?

Suzanna: As the only independent in the parliament, I’m all alone because everybody else belongs to a party but they treat me with respect. However, they are watchful, wondering what I’m going to do or assessing where I sit on things. A few people in particular have made the effort to give me advice and explain how things work and the parliamentary clerks are always available to answer any questions I might have.

John: Politicians appear to be easy targets. It doesn’t matter what you say or do, someone’s always unhappy. How do you deal with the negativity?

Interviews with John Suzanna: There hasn’t been too much negativity so far although I expect that to change when the next election rolls around.

I’m hopeful that I will achieve a great deal in the time that I have but I also expect that at the next election, the major parties will be so desperate to win the seat back, they will have to finally promise some things for us. That’s the whole point of the exercise. Don’t ignore us any longer because if you want to take the seat back then you will have to come up with the goods.

John: And if they do come up with the goods then people will say, “Look what Suzanna has achieved. Let’s vote for her again.”

Suzanna: As long as the government invests in this area then I will have achieved my aim and a close result next time will ensure that they continue to invest.

John: What do you do to relax and unwind?

Suzanna: Peter and I have two golden retrievers called Rosy and Quincy and we walk them a fair bit. Peter has four children and I’ve got two, so most of our spare time is spent catching up with family. I’m determined to get back to the gym because I used to do a class called body pump and I’ve really been missing it.

John: Who has been the inspiration in your life?

Suzanna: I’d have to say my parents because they were so involved in their local community.

My father was involved in the irrigation industry and he’d go off to Canberra with a group of men to lobby for various things and my mother was very much into acting and the local drama club. She was made an honorary member of the Country Women’s Association.

John: Do you read the Bulletin?

Suzanna: I have a monthly subscription. It’s a great publication and I think Tatura is very fortunate to have it.

NOVEMBER IN THE GARDEN It is important, especially this month, to recognise the value of mulching and mulching materials. Using organic mulches can protect your soils from the harsh sun as well as adding structure to depleted soils, preserve moisture which reduces the need for irrigation and becomes an aid in weed prevention. Mulches increase microbial activity improving overall health of the soil and also improve crop production when used on vegetable gardens.

Some suggestions for organic Mulches would be lucerne, pea-straw, straw, pine bark or sugarcane mulch.

Watch out for aphids this time of year especially on new growth and buds on roses, gardenia, citrus and vegetables. You can squash the aphids if there are only a few but in severe cases, spray to control with an insecticide. Powdery Mildew can also be present with warmer weather and rain falls.

Treat this disease with a suitable fungicide.

Replace all of your tired spring flowering annuals with some fresh summer colour, petunia's, portulaca's, marigold's, cosmos and salvia's are some suggestions that survive the summer heat. Always use a good quality potting mix to maximise their performance.

Hint: Mulching the surface of the soil in your pots well help retain moisture throughout the hotter months.

Spring flowering shrubs and rambling climbers can be pruned back this month as their flowers finish. Banksia roses and wisteria can be cut back heavily if require, otherwise a light trim for azalea's and lilac's to maintain a good shape. Hedge plants such as buxus and

murraya can also be trimmed this month.

Hint: Mix dampened peatmoss and compost to make an ideal mulch for your azaleas and camellias through summer.

It's a great time to plant herbs now. Growing strongly scented herbs among other plants can help deter pesky insects, especially in your vegie patch. Try planting Rosemary, Thyme, Parsley, Oregano, Perrenial and Sweet Basil.

Coriander is another great herb but doesn’t like the super hot days so much, so a cooler spot in your garden will give it a longer life and stop it from producing seed too quickly.

As you would have noticed this is the time for roses to be in full bloom. Feeding them a complete rose food is important to keep up the nutrient requirement. An occasional deep watering through the hotter months will also benefit your roses as does deheading spent flowers to promote more flowering for a longer period of time.

Hint: The product Seasol promotes vigorous flowering, fruiting and overall plant health.

Seasol also stimulates new root growth, helps the plants to build up resistance to disease, insect and fungal attack. Seasol provides its benefits both through the plants foliage as well as the soil. As Seasol is a tonic and not a fertiliser, it contains virtually no nitrogen or phosphorus so it can be used on Natives as well as acid loving plants such as roses and citrus.

This is the time to carefully dig up your daffodil and tulip bulbs for dry storing until next autumn.

Tatura Library News Goulburn Valley TREE GROUP Having sown the seeds to start their life cycle, the acacias germinated and are being pricked out. Perhaps it is time to put our brains into incubation mode and really think about what type of trees are required for where.

Do we want shade, a windbreak, to attract birds or just pure aesthetics?

With one of our members having just returned from W.A. and having reacted to the local vegetation as enthusiastically as Sir Joseph Banks, do we perhaps forget that a particular ‘must have’ plant may not enjoy the conditions we have to offer? Weather also dictates, as I have found to my cost with the violent southerlies we have endured for most of the year. A tree I coveted and cosseted really needed warm sheltered conditions and certainly not what has prevailed. Also, most of you will have noticed that a recent burst of excessive heat caused some trees to shed their leaves.

For me that included Grevillea Robusta and the mighty blue gum. On the other hand, during the two years we had summer rains, a young plantation of melaleucas turned into a first class windbreak almost overnight.

In case you think I am being Job’s comforter, Nature is wonderfully resilient and full of surprises. Unfortunately we all want instant trees and, like the watched pot, it never boils. Good luck, do your homework, and then look forward to enjoying the fruits of your labours.

OUR NEW PHARMACY GRAND OPENING A SUCCESS As locals will be aware, the Tatura Pharmacy has had a complete make over, making it up to a standard not previously seen in our town. The Grand Opening was enjoyed by many throughout the day, with the visit from celebrity ‘Dipper’, live radio broadcasts, seeing the great new product lines and taking advantage of free face painting, balloon twisting, fairy floss and BBQ. It was also an opportunity to get a sneak peek at the new consulting rooms out the back where we are going to be able to have many medical services available in the future. The owner and pharmacist, Ashley Wiles, told me his vision is to bring Allied Health Services to Tatura, saving people from having to go to Shepparton and I am presuming that the bulk billing doctors will already be installed by the time we, at the Bulletin, go to print.

Ashley said that the aim of the Opening day was basically to have fun. He said he wanted to make it a family friendly day to introduce the new store to everyone. All staff there were delighted at what a successful day it was and thoroughly enjoyed the day themselves, though they were obviously extremely busy when I was there. As with a lot of events in Tatura, more than one business was involved. The sausages were donated by Tatura Family Butcher and cooked by members of the Lions Club, the drinks were donated by IGA and the bread by Tatura Bakery and Lunches. Ashley

MIDWEEK WALK – COSGROVE TO MT MAJOR

Thirteen members set off from a private property on a hill east of Mt Major. The property is owned by Alex and Andrea Graham and the part we chose to start our walk on, has a trust for nature covenant on it, previously used for grazing and now with a woodlot agreement so that no grazing takes place or any other activity which would discourage a return to its natural state.

Along the way we were lucky to observe a wide variety of birds and native plants in an environment that was quite diverse with sheltered gullies and windswept rocky peaks. A huge eagle’s nest was one find along the way, built in the fork of a large dead yellow box tree. While a wedge tailed eagle was spotted nearby we were not able to see if the nest was currently in use. In all, sixteen different birds were identified and several others were heard, but did not show themselves. The birds spotted included Nankeen kestrel, Grey shrike thrush, Red wattlebird, Rufous songlark, Black-faced cuckoo shrike and Australian Pipit. A rare native Rock Correa was also spotted on the south side of the hill, with its inconspicuous green/yellow flowers.

It was a pretty tough walk up the Graham’s hill and our legs were somewhat relieved to do the downhill leg as we left their property and headed for the towers on Mt Major. Alas it was only another climb which greeted us as we crossed a road and approached an easement taking us straight up Mt Major. Lunch on top of the mount was pleasant with great views of the surrounding canola crops and snow on Mt Buller. Cloud in the north east obstructed our view of the other snow capped peaks.

A vehicle was planted on top of the mount to transfer drivers back to our starting point so we didn’t have to retrace our steps. Speaking of steps, we are not sure how far we walked except that my legs reckon it was about far enough for one day. My guess is about five kilometres but it felt like ten. To finish the day coffee, biscuits and free marshmallows were indulged at the Dookie Store.

Thanks to Alex and Andrea Graham for allowing us to walk across their farm, and to Ian and Jenny Shields for access across their easement, allowing a short cut to Mt Major.

As a result of the very successful fundraiser for local Cancer Support Services, a cheque for $8,800 was recently presented to the Tatura Hospital Palliative Care Unit for the purchase of a new bed and recliner.

GV Hospice Care received $6,600 for a portable oxygen concentrator, whilst Community Accessibility Services were given $6,600 towards a VW Caddy vehicle already being purchased in Shepparton for wheelchair bound clients’ transportation.

As an adjunct to the fundraiser, an anonymous source invited guests celebrating her birthday to donate to the Cancer Support Groups efforts instead of giving gifts. This has resulted in a further $435 going to Tatura Hospital’s Palliative Care Unit to assist with furnishings.

Everybody Has A Story IF YOU’RE NOT CRASHING YOU’RE NOT SKIING This is the final instalment in the series and I want to begin by taking you back to the various methods of getting to the top of the mountain.

The easiest method is the chair lift and apart from relaxing and enjoying the scenery, you also get a chance to make new friends, albeit quite briefly. Although dismounting at the end can be a little tricky, this is by far the best way to travel. T-bars however, are in many ways worse than poma lifts. The T-bar is shaped a little like an anchor and is used to pull two people up the slope, with their buttocks resting either side of the T-bar. This is fine if both people are roughly the same weight and height but this rarely happens. The result is that one side of the T-bar is pulled up the slope at a slightly different speed to the other, causing the T-Bar to slowly corkscrew around until the heavier person is inevitably dumped off. The only way to stop this is by using your central ski to push back firmly against the other person’s ski with the result that you’re quite exhausted and in danger of cramping by the time you finally reach the top. I remember one occasion where a very heavy and overweight gentleman happened to partner up with me. Unfortunately for him, he wasn’t able to move close enough to the central line and as the T-Bar was handed to us from behind by the attendant, the pointy end of his side of the T-Bar pushed itself firmly between his buttock cheeks. Naturally, he wriggled around considerably trying to free himself but to no avail. His antics meant that I was in danger of being dumped off from my side of the T-Bar so I leant across and said, “Here, let me help you mate,” and gave him a firm shove which sent him tumbling off into the snow with a shriek of indignation which then allowed me to ride to the top in peace. It was a cold day and I was wearing a balaclava

so I knew he wouldn’t be able to recognise me if he saw me again.

Let me finish this series by telling you about my experience with The Wall of Death, a notorious black run at Mount Hotham. My companions and I had met Bob, a local skier, who extolled the virtues of this particular run and when he offered to lead us down it, we readily agreed. He took us along a winding trail until we reached the top of a very steep but narrow run that was almost completely covered with dreaded moguls. The sign at the top indicated that The Wall of Death was a black run and should only be attempted by very experienced skiers. As I was a very average intermediate skier, I should have feigned a hamstring injury and pulled out but when you’re young and stupid you’re basically stupid so I warily followed along at the rear of the group. As we charged down the slope, there was very little room to turn and reduce speed and once we hit the moguls, it was simply a matter of survival.

There were several occasions when I was completely out of control with one ski in the air and my arms frantically flailing like windmills but each time I was able to regain my balance and continue on. I remember that the slope was littered with crashed skiers and weaving around them made the run even more exhilarating. By some miracle (and I can now attest that they do indeed happen) I made it to the bottom and skied up to my companions who were waiting at the top of a sheer cliff.

I was unable to contain my exhilaration and loudly declared, “Wow! That was absolutely brilliant.”

“What was?” someone asked.

“That,” I replied, as I pointed at the run, “The Wall of Death.”

“Oh no,” laughed Bob. “That’s just the track.

He pointed at the sheer cliff in front of us.

“That, my friend, is The Wall of Death.”

I was only a couple of feet from the edge but it was so steep I was unable to see the bottom. I sidled tentatively closer and peered anxiously over the top. I thought he was kidding but dotted here and there were tiny skiers and very few of them were standing upright.

“Right, let’s go,” announced Bob, and with a cheery cry of Talley-ho, launched himself over the top. The rest of us had no other option but to follow, and one by one, pushed ourselves cautiously onto the very narrow ledge along the top of the cliff face. The run was so steep I knew if I failed to complete my turn each time I attempted to traverse back across the cliff face I would have immediately dropped into auto-pilot kamikaze mode and I wouldn’t have stopped cart-wheeling until I reached the bottom. There would have been very little of me left for the ski patrol to have dragged away.

Eventually I was able to navigate my way to the bottom of the run, having crashed a total of 32 times, alternating between bottom flops, back whackers and face plants but thankfully avoiding the dreaded kamikaze cartwheel. I was totally exhausted and both my legs and my brain were like jelly but somehow, I was still alive. Even though I made it from the top to the bottom, in all honesty I can’t really say that I actually skied down The Wall of Death although that didn’t stop me from casually mentioning the fact that I had, to any semiinterested bystander when we all adjourned to the hotel bar that evening. When somebody mentioned skiing down The Wall of Death a couple of days later I simply said, “Nah, been there, done that.” I may have been stupid but I wasn’t that stupid.

DHURRINGILE TENNIS CLUB NEWS Dhurringile celebrated tennis Open Day with Seniors Week on Sunday October 4. It was a great turnout where members and guests were treated to some social tennis, lessons and sausage sizzle for lunch. Thanks to Melvie Darby, DTC Life member, who was able to attend on the day.

For registering, the club received a box of Slazenger tennis balls and two tickets to the 2016 Aussie Open. The tickets will be awarded to Melvie Darby for participating socially on the day. This tennis season, the club has entered two junior teams in the Shepparton and District Junior Tennis Association. Last year’s Premiers, Division 2 players Charlie Murdoch, Aaron Niglia, Paige Jackson and Rhylee Stammers, will line up with Emeric Wilson, Harry Murdoch, Kiara Gagliardi and Lila Delahenty to play in B2. This will no doubt challenge their skills as they will come across many good quality players. This year’s Division 3 players are Sanae Gagliardi, Darcie Stammers, Maya Curtis and new to Saturday morning competition, Lachlan Darby and Miles Dalgliesh. ANZ junior community play Red Ball which will be on again on Friday, October 23 at 4.30-5.15pm. League Competition, Orange and Green Ball will also commence on Friday starting at 5.30pm-6.30pm. The Club has entered two senior teams in the Goulburn Murray Lawn Tennis Association.

Premier 2 will have a combined team of players from Dhurringile and Stanhope tennis Club. September has been a busy month with our Branch jointly hosting Goulburn Valley Group Craft at the Tatura Community House. The project tackled by the ladies was to stitch and appliqué a panel which will be made into a bag or cushion at the next session in October. Our very talented ladies earned first place in both the Branch Exhibit and the Five Small Items Exhibit at our recent Group Exhibition as well as numerous prizes for individual effort with one of our Junior Members, Beanie Russell, taking out the Best Individual Entry in the Junior Section. John commenced work with Australia Post as a telegraph boy in Kyabram. ***** Tatura’s 105 year old Bartlett’s Cordials has been saved from closure and will now conduct ‘business as usual’. A spokesman for the family business, Mr Brian Smith, said the business would not close.

Rodney Shire Council was so concerned about the company’s apparent imminent demise that it invited proprietor Mr Jack Smith, to an industrial meeting of council. ***** Rodney Shire Council announced a new competition to name the new barge. The barge is part of a proposal by council to operate as a paddle steamer on the Goulburn River between Mooroopna and Shepparton. A meeting of the Tourism Development Committee had previously decided that the barge be named the ‘Rodney Princess’ once it was converted into a paddle steamer. However, Council decided that naming of the barge should be open for suggestion by the residents and ratepayers of Rodney. It was suggested that first prize should be a trip on the maiden voyage of the paddle steamer. An updated estimate of the barge conversion project is $200,000. ***** A new caravan park will soon be operating in Tatura. Shirley and Arthur Garner will open the Country Gardens Caravan Park around Christmas time. The amenities block is almost completed and work on sewerage, water and electricity is expected to begin soon. The two hectare site at the corner of Winter and the Tatura Rushworth roads will have room for 50 sites when it is completed. ***** Toolamba Primary School was officially opened on its new site. As spectators huddled in the biting wind, Rodney Shire President, Cr John Grey, unveiled a plaque to commemorate the event in front of more than 60 interested community members and parents. Councillor Grey said, “No community is complete without a school, and while the district has been well served for more than 110 years by the Toolamba Primary School when it was sited 3km north-west of the town, the desirability of its relocation had become imperative.” The relocation of the school was completed at a cost of $130,000. The day’s events ended with the burial of a time capsule by the Regional Director of Education, Mr Geoff Chandler. ***** Tatura bride, Belinda Bloodworth chose a gown of embossed nylon for her marriage to Max Baker at All Saints church in Tatura. CONSTRUCTION OF TOOLAMBA PUBLIC TOILET Preliminary works have commenced on construction of a unisex toilet in Toolamba, to be located next to the Collaura Gardens in Toolamba. The project will include the duplication of the existing shade structure and installation of a new toilet, including associated lighting, electrical, plumbing and landscaping works.

Greater Shepparton City Council’s Director Infrastructure Steve Bowmaker, said this project was identified in the Toolamba and District Community Plan. “The community plan group should be congratulated for their efforts in advocating for this much needed project,” Mr Bowmaker said.

Geoff Maynard from the Toolamba Community Plan group said the project had been a priority for the Toolamba community for many years. “The community is very pleased this is project is now coming to fruition as it was identified as a high priority in our community plan.”

The current BBQ and picnic tables will not be available during the course of the works.

TATURA PROBUS CLUB Our meeting, held on September 24, was full of fun with many of the members wearing their AFL club colours; President Bill Woods looked a treat in his Geelong beanie and sweater. The footie quiz, organised by Lynette and Geoff McMullen, added to the enjoyment.

Our guest speaker was Barbara Muller who, with her husband Mick, volunteered to work in the islands of Vanuatu. Barb worked in the pharmacy of the hospital in Port Vila where there were 10 - 15 doctors.

Australia and New Zealand send many specialists over to mentor, teach and provide surgical assistance. Barb, (Mick was away), was there when Cyclone Pam brushed across the island Port Vila is on. The people were wonderful in coping after the cyclone and handled the trauma extremely well. Barb and Mick were away for twelve months and attended cultural events, weddings and learnt to understand the culture of the country.

Tourism is very important to Vanuatu and Barb said it is a beautiful and interesting place to visit. Ev Leahy thanked Barb on behalf of the club.

On September 17, a busload of members travelled to Yarrawonga to visit the Rich Glen Olive Farm. We wandered through the 100 year old store and sampled various olives and dressings, along with a skin care range.

Then it was on to the magnificent Byramine Homestead built in 1842 to quite a complex design of Murray Pine which is termite resistant which accounts for the house being in such good condition. After lunch we travelled on to Lake Mulwala and boarded a catamaran for a relaxing cruise. For afternoon tea we enjoyed fruit scones, jam and cream prepared by the captain! We had a lovely day and everyone agreed it was one of the best trips organised.

FOLDING DAY VOLUNTEERS

GERARD VOOGD Gerard became involved with the Bulletin fifteen years ago when his wife, Tjeerdina, was asked to help out. Since then, Gerard has been involved with advertising, folding, paste-up and was president for three years.

He also delivers Bulletins to Toolamba, Murchison, Stanhope and the Varaville Caravan Park each month. He remembers when the Bulletin operated out of the homes of individual committee members and it wasn’t until Jenny Harris approached Tatura Milk that the Bulletin was able to find a home in the old court house.

Gerard said that there have been many benefits volunteering at the Bulletin. “It keeps me involved with the community and since I retired, it helps to keep me mentally and physically alert.” Apart from the social contact, Gerard said that working with the advertising helped him to remain in contact with the local tradesmen. He said that he feels very proud when people offer positive comments about the Bulletin, knowing that he’s a part of it. While he enjoys most of the articles and stories in the Bulletin, he especially enjoys reading about what happened thirty years ago and also the early years of Tatura.

Gerard still plays bowls twice a week and spends much of his spare time reading. He and Tjeerdina have three children and five grand-children.

E a e r h ly Years T A R U t A T 1874 to 1886 THE SHIRE OF RODNEY The Shire of Rodney took its name from the County of Rodney in which it lies and of which Murchison was the seat of Government before Tatura and the neighbouring towns existed.

There is little doubt that that the County was named after Admiral Sir George Rodney (1718-92), one of England’s eminent naval commanders, who won a notable victory over the French at the battle of Jamaica.

In the beginning, Victoria was divided into counties and parishes along English lines but it was soon found that they were inconvenient and unrealistic in regards to local conditions.

For this reason, the shires that were later formed, with reference to local needs and local convenience, bear no relation to the boundaries of the counties. The formation and maintenance of roads was one matter that could clearly be dealt with more satisfactorily by a local authority than by the central administration, and in 1853 a Roads Act was passed, making provision for the constitution of district roads boards. These boards were empowered to make and maintain certain roads, and to raise revenue for them from rates, tolls and Government grants.

The Waranga Road District was created in 1863 and was extended in 1864 to embrace runs and individuals as distant as Mooroopna (which did not then exist) and Rochester.

The Road Districts were soon superseded by Shires and in 1865, the Shire of Waranga was proclaimed, taking over the area formerly administered by the Waranga Road Board.

By 1884, there was increasing discontent among farmers in the north-east part of the Shire of Waranga as they contended that there was no community of interest between

the farmers in the north and the miners in the south, and that the farmers had no representation. A deputation appeared before the council with the proposal that the Shire be divided into five ridings and although they were received politely, the council did nothing.

In consequence, the request for redistribution soon became a demand for a new shire.

The cause was strongly agitated among the Farmer’s Unions and in the newspapers of Tatura and Mooroopna.

A petition was prepared, 32 feet long, which referred to the great distance from the seat of local government in Rushworth, the inadequate representation of the residents in the nine parishes, their lack of common interest with the residents in the south and the unmanageable size of the shire. During March 1886, the question was argued before the Minister of Public Works, with the Waranga Council opposing the petition on the grounds that no benefit could result to anyone from the proposed measure. Minister decided in favour of the petition and the Shire of Rodney was proclaimed in 1886, embracing the parishes of Undera, Coomboona, Kyabram East, Mooroopna West, Mooroopna, Girgarre East, Toolamba West, Toolamba and North Murchison.

The new Shire was scarcely two months old when, in May 1886, the Minister of Public Works was petitioned to sever the parish of North Murchison from Rodney to Waranga, the new ratepayers therein having “no interest in common with the Shire of Rodney”. The proposal was rejected by the minister.

The returning officer for the first municipal election in the Shire of Rodney was John West

of Mooroopna, and the polling places were the Mechanics Institute at Tatura, the Athenaeum Hall at Mooroopna, the Assembly Hall at Henley, and the State Schools at Girgarre East, Toolamba East, Undera, St Germains and North Murchison. The successful candidates were W. Brown, M. Cussen, A, Groves, H. Drum, W. Patterson, W. Baldwin, T. Hogan, J. Lilford and S. Lancaster. At the first council meeting held in the Tatura Mechanics Institute, Martin Cussen was appointed President of the Shire. He and William Baldwin had formerly served on the Waranga Council.

PHOBIAS (41-50)

Our list of phobias continues this month with the next ten most common (or perhaps this should be the ten increasingly most uncommon).

41. Gephyrophobia – The fear of crossing bridges (from the Greek ‘gephyra’ meaning bridge). Most gephyrophobics fear bridges that run over large bodies of water or deep ravines and for some, even the smallest bridge is too much to handle. Even seeing a bridge from afar or watching a movie involving bridges can set off an anxiety attack in the sufferer. As a result, sufferers try and avoid routes that will take then over a bridge. My son, who can be quite harsh at times, suggested that these people should simply build a bridge and get over it.

42. Entomophobia – The fear of bugs and insects (from the Greek ‘entomos’ meaning insects). Fear of insects usually includes a disgust response or aversion to bugs owing to their shape or colour. Bugs like flies, mosquitoes and fleas are also associated with the spread of diseases and infections. In some patients, the condition results in Delusory Parasitosis, a mental illness where the patient feels constant ‘prickling, tingling, creeping, crawling or burrowing sensations akin to insects present on the skin. In severe cases of Entomophobia, people have been known to self-mutilate or scratch intensely, leading to severe skin infections. Some display an obsessive compulsive disorder where they may clean constantly to repel bugs.

43. Lepidopterophobia – The fear of butterflies (from the Greek ‘lepidoptera- meaning the class of insects including butterflies and moths). Now bugs I can understand, but butterflies? Apparently the colour of the wings and the constant fluttering triggers an anxiety response in the phobic’s mind. Most sufferers avoid gardens, parks and zoos where there is

a chance of encountering butterflies. I wonder if this particular fear creates ‘butterflies in the stomach’ for sufferers. If this is the case then it becomes a circular phobia with one constantly setting off the other. What a nightmare!

44. Panophobia – The fear of everything (from the Greek ‘panto’ meaning everything).

Panophobics remain in a constant state of fear believing there is ‘persistent evil’ and ‘something terrible is about to happen’. If you’re going to suffer from a phobia then this is the one to have because no matter what goes wrong, anywhere in the world, you can say, “See, I warned you about this.”

45. Podophobia – The fear of feet (from the Greek ‘podos’ meaning feet). Sufferers fear touching or looking at feet, even their own. This phobia can be detrimental to the sufferer’s well-being, as they often refuse to remove their shoes or socks preferring to keep them on even while sleeping. This can lead to fungal infections, allergies and other medical conditions. My cat suffers from podophobia but only when he’s been naughty.

46. Paraskevidekatriaphobia – The fear of Friday the 13th (from the Greek paraskevi meaning Friday). This is an extension of Triskaidekaphobia which is the fear of number 13. The main reason behind this fear is the negative associations with Friday and the number 13 in many religions and cultures.

Here are a few of them. Jesus was crucified on Friday 13th; witches were believed to have gathered in groups of twelve and the 13th member was the devil himself; in England, Friday was associated with capital punishment and there were exactly 13 steps to the gallows.

Also, if you trip over a black cat when it is crossing your path and fall in front of a bus, the chances are it won’t end well.

47. Somniphobia – The fear of sleep (from the Greek ‘somnus’ meaning sleep). The fear

of sleep is related to the fear of the unknown and the sufferer is terrified of what might happen once they fall asleep. Death is also known as the ‘big sleep’. Somniphobes feel very vulnerable whilst sleeping and believe that death and sleeping are unsettlingly similar conditions which leave them completely out of control. The French singer, Edith Piaf, sums this up: “I fear sleep, as it is a form of death”. People with existing anxiety disorders often find it hard to fall asleep. When they do, their sleep is more likely to be plagued with nightmares. Such nightmares and sleeppanic becomes a vicious circle: their sleep deprivation leads to even greater anxiety of fear of falling sleep.

48. Gynophobia – The fear (or hatred) of women (from the Greek ‘gyno’ meaning woman). Almost all sufferers are men and this phobia often stems from unresolved conflicts with their mothers. Many phobics are unable to work with female colleagues or bosses and tend to lash out at them or question their authority. A related phobia is Venustaphobia which is the fear of beautiful women. See, truth is stranger than fiction.

49. Apiphobia – The fear of bees (from the Greek ‘api’ meaning bees). Most sufferers are also afraid of wasps and all other swarming and flying insects that sting. Many people feel apprehension at the sight of a bee as nobody wants to get stung, and I have a healthy respect for bees as I’m allergic to their stings but this isn’t the same thing as fear. For apiphobes, even the mention of bees or pictures of bees can trigger an anxiety response that is akin to that of actually being stung.

50. Koumpounophobia – The fear of buttons (from the Greek ‘koumpouno’ meaning buttons). I swear I’m not making this up and this is only the halfway mark in our list of phobias. So what is the rationale behind this phobia? This phobia may be evolutionary, just as the fear of all circular objects is. Scientists believe that man has always been afraid of circular objects like holes as they resemble skin rashes or pits containing the unknown.

This fear may also be related to a traumatic or negative childhood experience. One phobic reports fearing buttons due to his inability to do them up on his own clothes and as a result, was teased and bullied at school. I think my son might mention bridges again in this particular case.

RIPPER OF A DAY AT RIPPON LEA Members and friends of Murchison Historical Society had a great day out in September when we went to see Miss Fisher’s Costume Exhibition staged at Rippon Lea mansion in Elsternwick. The weather on the day was perfect and travelling by coach door to door made it an easy journey. Even if not a fan of the ABC show Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, the glamour of the 1920’s and vintage costumes designed by Marion Boyce certainly impressed us all. The gardens and the house were of course delightful to see too.

Rippon Lea is considered an outstanding late19th century urban estate. The ornate mansion was built in the 'Victorian Italianate' style, the same style as our local Noorilim mansion. It was designed by Joseph Reed, Melbourne's leading architect of the time, for Frederick Thomas Sargood. The Sargood family had arrived in Melbourne from England in 1850 and Frederick was then aged 15. The family’s soft goods firm was possibly the largest firm of merchants in the southern hemisphere, making a fortune in the gold rush era. Frederick eventually assumed control of the business and became a leader of Melbourne society, a notable political figure and Victoria’s first Minister of Defence. He was knighted in 1890.

In 1868 Frederick bought 27 hectares (66 acres) of scrub at Elsternwick in order to establish his dream home and garden. He named the property after his mother, Emma whose maiden name was Rippon, then added 'lea', which is an old English word for meadow.

Construction began on the two-storey, fifteen room house in 1869. The house was made from polychrome brickwork – many different coloured bricks that provided a decorative finish. This was a new style at the time as most of the important buildings in Victoria were built in stone or stuccoed/rendered brick, but Rippon Lea was to become one of the finest polychrome buildings in the colony.

Another unusual design feature was an outdoor pavilion or piazza adjacent to the dining room. On the first floor were six bedrooms, a dressing room, and remarkable for the time, two bathrooms. The service rooms were all in the basement, uncommon in 19th-century Australia. Sargood made many alterations and additions to the house as his wealth and the family increased (there were twelve children), and although he used different architects over a 30 year period, the style was unusually consistent.

Magnificent ornamental gardens were developed surrounding the house providingl Rippon Lea with one of the largest private gardens in Australia, equalled in size only by the Melbourne Government House garden.

Sargood was ahead of his time in devising a sophisticated underground water collection, irrigation and drainage system, ensuring that the garden flourished.

Rippon Lea was sold after his death in 1903 and the property passed into the hands of a succession of wealthy Melbourne families, who altered the house and garden in ways

Sir Thomas Bent, then Premier of Victoria, owned it from 1904-09 and from 1911-35, the owner was Benjamin Nathan, the founder of Maples’ furniture stores. The property was inherited in 1935 by his daughter, Mrs Louisa Jones. In 1954 the Australian Broadcasting Corporation purchased a hectare to the south and in 1963, attempted to compulsorily acquire another two, including the lake and much of the ornamental garden. Jones then bequeathed it to the National Trust and for ten years there was a battle to resist the compulsory acquisition. Jones lived there until her death in 1972, when it was given to the National Trust.

The National Trust have restored and cared

for Rippon Lea for over forty years. It is open to the public every day and is popular for weddings and also garden festivals. It has been used as a setting for films and documentaries including of course Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries.

The original property of 27 hectares had been reduced by subdivision to about 5.7 hectares (14 acres) which is still a large parcel of land for a suburban situation. Rippon Lea House and Gardens was included in the National Heritage List in 2006. Miss Fisher’s Costume Exhibition Series 3 finished on September 30 but if you get the opportunity to visit Rippon Lea for another occasion, you are sure to enjoy it as much as our group did.

A Grade Premiers Our recent presentation night was held at Lagozzino’s hotel. A great time was had by all as we enjoyed the excellent food and reminisced on the past season. The winner of the A grade was HTC (Roland Haccart, Laurie Merritt and Rick Nardella) with a hard fought win, six rubbers to five against Motorola (Hank Doller, John Kriesfeld and Bobby Crow).

The match was evenly poised throughout the evening with both teams claiming a doubles. The final result hung in the balance at five rubbers each prior to the last match between Rick Nardella and Bobby Crow.

Bobby hadn’t beaten Rick all season but had a chance right up until the very last point, losing a very tight fifth set. It was a great effort by Bobby but in the end, the better player won.

The B grade winner was Ericson (Roc Niglia / Mark Meda, Gary Clough and Axel Bourke) who defeated Toshiba, seven rubbers to four. Could anyone with any of the annual cups please return them to Phil Crow.

Leading Players were – No. 1’s, Mark Meda, No. 2’s, Peter Lawson and No.3’s, Aaron Niglia.

The Ted Price Memorial Doubles Champions were Roland Haccart and Rick Nardella.

Winner of the Handicap Event was Locky George.

The Robert Fitzgerald Memorial Encouragement Award went to Tom Heath.

Best Sportsman Award was won by Lynton Greenwood who lost only two games for the season. In both of them he was playing left-handed against Bobby Crow.

A sad occasion during the year was the loss of one of our past champions.

Brian Towner, or ‘BT’ as he preferred to be called, was club champion nine times, starting with a four year reign from 1986-89 and then again in 1991, 92, 95, 96 and 2001. Although a bit of a rascal, BT was also the ultimate competitor and was never beaten until the final point was

Di Downie and Phil Crow with two young stars played. A rare victory over Brian was always thoroughly earned. Jeff Trevaskis has won the club championship eight times but is finding the ninth win to tie with Brian very elusive.

WORKSHOP WONDERS The last Tatura PAWS workshop was held on September 20 and once again, the participants were entertaining. The artwork was as creative as it always is and the artists appeared to have great fun in the process. It was considered highly appropriate that a snake participated in the September workshop given it is the traditional start of the snake season! The usual array of creative critters attended including cats and dogs and many more. Pictured here is Willow, who has created an extra painting for a Christmas present.

September was the final workshop to be held and the committee is now deep in conversation planning the November art show. As well as planning the art show, the committee is busy creating a calendar of all the pets who participated. This will be available for purchase at the show and copies can be preordered.

It was a January day and a searing northerly wind was blowing relentlessly over the parched and barren landscape as we pulled up outside the old house that was our new residence. It looked sad and forlorn, the paint flaking off the exposed walls, the surrounding wooden veranda rotten and disintegrating. We wrenched open the creaking door to be met by a blast of stale suffocating hot air.

Our friends helped us unload the furniture into the dark and dreary rooms. No sooner had the bed been placed in position on the uneven floor when it took on a life of its own, the castors gathering momentum as the bed rolled across the floor, finally crashing into the opposing wall. A great start! Our plan was to restump the house and this confirmed its necessity.

After a quick cuppa, our friends drove away, and reality set in. Just what had we embarked upon? Was it possible to turn this ‘old lady’ into a comfortable and functional home? It had good bones, but just where would we begin? The challenge had been set. My husband had previously stated, "We can do this." At the time it sounded like an exciting new adventure but today in the sweltering heat, it didn’t have that initial appeal. This was going to be a mammoth task!

Once the restumping had taken place, things at least felt like they were now on an even keel.

The rest was up to us but it was going to take quite some time for two people to accomplish.

Little did I know that it would be eight years before we could finally stand by and say, “It is finished!”

We renovated one room at a time by removing the architraves, skirting boards and the buckled and stained plaster from the walls, before finally dropping the ceilings which came down with a mighty crash. Eighty years of accumulated dust and spider webs were added to the mayhem in the middle of the room. Were we making progress? At times

it felt minimal, as we laboured to clean away the debris.

The kitchen was the first room to receive our attention and a builder was engaged to create an extension. A makeshift pantry was located in a bedroom, a sink and stove in two opposing directions. Yes, this indeed was an adventure, but certainly not the one I had envisaged, as I ran from room to room endeavouring to find a missing ingredient to produce some sort of evening meal. The cold June wind swirled in under the exposed sisalation adding a sense of the surreal to the situation. Law and, order had long since disappeared and chaos now reigned.

Little by little as each room took shape, we were finally able to choose fittings, tiles and paint for some of the rooms. What a sense of achievement and pleasure it was to take our first shower in the newly created en-suite, built and fitted out by my husband. This was sheer luxury compared to the tired and dilapidated bathroom that we had become accustomed to.

Time slowly moved on and the exterior was stripped and painted. Chaos was now gradually being replaced by an ever increasing sense of order and the visual reality that we indeed, "Could do this." Sheds and a garden were established and grew in time along with the house, the outer fence being renewed and verandas replaced.

Thirteen years have since passed and this experience has brought a great sense of satisfaction and accomplishment in watching our team effort grow and take shape into a place we treasure as ‘home.’ In January's to follow, as I sit under the cool air conditioner watching the Australian Open, I think back to that first January day. Would I be persuaded to try such a venture again? My memories of that hot January day and the feeling of great apprehension remain indelibly imprinted on my mind, but if I were as young and fit as I was back then, yes, I could be persuaded.

TATURA BOWLS CLUB

As a prelude to the commencement of the bowls pennant season, the club conducts a Two Bowls Singles Championship event.

The winner, recognised on the Jim Coombs Perpetual Shield, has to win his section and then defeat the other sectional winners in a knockout format. The Shield is in recognition of Jimmy Coombs, a former Club President in 1973 -1974. A retired farmer, he came to live in town and soon became a very good bowler, occupying a permanent leader's position in one of the Tatura Club's two A Grade sides. Jim was also a regular in the Club's Country Week sides which travelled each year to Melbourne.

These were the days before narrow bowls and the days when the leader occupied a much more important position in the rink than today.

Tatura fielded four pennant sides at the time and therefore required sixteen good leaders.

An advocate for the importance of the leader, Jim came up with the idea that a Two Bowls Competition held before the start of pennant, would be better practice than the usual four bowls, but more importantly would help identify potential leaders among the newer bowlers. In this regard, it was very successful,

and for many years the event was well attended by all the club's bowlers and it became a marathon job to get through to the final.

In the Two Bowls Singles Championship recently conducted, sectional winners were Brendon Boyd, John Crilly, Rob Crotty and Nick Tziros. Brendan Boyd comfortably accounted for last years Two Bowls winner John Crilly 11/5 to make it to the final where he met Nick Tziros who won a very close semi final match 10/9 against Rob Crotty. The final between Boyd and Tziros was an intense spectacle with the scores level on a number of occasions and then even with just two ends to play. Brendon Boyd prevailed to win by three shots 10/7 to take out this year's Jim Coombs Two Bowls Singles Shield.

Other activities: The Challenge Shield match honouring bowls player Kevin Naylor and held annually between Tatura and Mooroopna Golf resulted in a return of the perpetual shield to Mooroopna Golf, their second win of the six year competition. As the home team, Mooroopna Golf provided a BBQ and drinks following the proceedings and the social event was enjoyed by all.

TATURA JUNIOR SOCCER CLUB The Tatura Junior Soccer Club recently held its annual presentation day to celebrate the end of another successful season of junior soccer. The presentations were held at Howley oval on a glorious afternoon, with a sausage sizzle for all players and families. The day celebrated the efforts of the players throughout the season, with all players receiving either a trophy or medallion in recognition of their hard work, enthusiasm and team spirit throughout the year.

The Club congratulates all players and their families, many of whom were playing soccer for the first time. The teams play on Saturdays during Terms 2 and 3 in Shepparton through the Shepparton Junior Soccer Association. All the coaches were very pleased with the development of skills and team work that were shown by players throughout the season and the amount of fun that was had by both the players and the supporters.

We didn’t know if we were fortunate or unfortunate to have been selected from among the many billions of people on Earth for the trip of a lifetime to the distant planet Kepler 186F. As the planet was 500 light years from Earth and the speed of our stellar star drive was only a tenth of that, the journey was expected to take 5,000 years which would be a trip of many lifetimes. In the year 2549, the Earth government had decreed that colonisation of the universe by the human race was well over-due and this, the first of many planned missions, was now ready for launch. It was based on the timeless principle that slow and steady wins the race. The excitement and media coverage when the project was first announced had been huge and now that the launch was imminent, our every move and thought was instantly reported via social media to an eager audience. However, this was not a mission for volunteers but rather, for the chosen few who were genetically perfect, intellectually gifted, physically well-endowed, emotionally stable and whose socio-economic background was deemed ‘suitable’. More importantly, we were selected as a family unit.

Our task was to colonise Kepler 186F, an earthlike planet in the Cygnus constellation. One hundred families were selected for the journey and refusal was not an option.

Everybody and everything, including all of the animals and plants selected for the mission, would be cryogenically frozen. The ship would be run by computers and robots and we would only be released from our icy prisons once we had made landfall on Kepler 186F. Our first task would probably be to rename the planet.

I kissed my wife and children goodbye as they were loaded into their chambers and then it was my turn to be ushered, naked, into my new home. As the freezing gas enveloped my body, I wondered if I would have any dreams on the journey or would it simply be blank, a nothingness. A moment later, I became aware of a deep sounding bell, pealing regularly in the background and I slowly realised that the door to my cryogenic chamber was open.

Obviously something must have gone wrong with the launch countdown and the mission had been temporarily aborted. A tall figure in a bright yellow, skin tight protective suit and helmet appeared in the doorway and held out a hand to assist me from the chamber.

He spoke to me in a melodic language but I couldn’t understand a word he was saying.

He pressed a small object into my ear and spoke again. “Welcome to the planet Kepler.

My name is Garth and I’m here to help you with your transition. The device in your ear will translate for both of us. I’m sorry to say that English is now one of the dead languages although I’m sure some of our scholars will be happy to converse with you.”

At first I thought he was joking. I had only been in the chamber for a mere few seconds, not 5000 years. He helped me dress in a set of lightweight clothing then pointed to a band

on the wrist. “That adjusts your clothing temperature, thickness, size and colour. You’ll soon get used to it.”

I shook my head, confused. “What year is it?” I asked slowly, my voice strangely thick in my throat.

“Earth time? It’s the year 5583. Kepler time, it’s the year 1890.”

“So we really made it to Kepler,” I said wonderingly. Then the obvious thought struck me. “So who are you and where do you come from?”

I saw him smile behind the mask. “I’m from Earth, just as you are. We invented the faster than light star-drive nearly three thousand years ago and have been colonising the universe ever since. We’ve been waiting for you for nearly two thousand years and finally intercepted your ship when it entered our space zone.”

“So our mission was a complete waste of time,” I said despondently.

“Oh no,” he said, “quite the opposite. You and your people are our future although I must admit, there are a few minor issues.” He pointed to his suit. “Everybody who comes in contact with you must be protected. You carry diseases that were eradicated thousands of years ago and to which we now have no immunity. All of the animals, birds and plant life that you were carrying have already been destroyed and you and your people must remain here on the ship in deep space forever. You will never be allowed to set foot on Kepler.”

“So it was just a waste of time,” I repeated.

“Well, here’s the thing,” he said. “Anybody travelling in a ship powered by the faster than light star-drive, is bombarded with an exceedingly high dose of gamma rays and neutrons. This effectively renders them sterile so the only way we can reproduce on Kepler is by cloning. To date, we haven’t found any alien life forms to threaten our way of life. No, our greatest danger will be the people of Earth.

“I don’t understand. Why would they be a threat?”

He smiled again. “Evolution. They’re evolving and we’re not. Cloning simply reproduces what you already have. It doesn’t cater for any design improvements. Over time, the people of Earth will become quite different to us and probably superior in many ways. If we are to evolve at a similar rate then we will need your people.”

“But according to you we can’t set foot on Kepler,” I said.

“That’s right,” said Garth, “but if your children are born in a sterile environment then they won’t be a threat to the general population.

Our plan is for each of your women to produce one child every nine to ten months. Once the children who accompanied you reach maturity then they can also assist in this

task. If you factor in the increasing number of your children also reaching maturity on Kepler, then the need to produce more clones becomes minimal. Evolution will take over once again.”

“It sounds simply wonderful,” I said.

Garth, who obviously had no understanding of sarcasm, smiled broadly. “And do you know the really good news? With medical advancements, artificial body replacements and robotics, the average human life span is now almost 500 years. Just think how many babies your women will be able to produce during that period.”

I sighed as I wondered how I was going to break the good news to my wife and belatedly realised that our selection for the mission had in fact, been rather unfortunate.

THE ORIGIN OF OLD SAYINGS

A rolling stone gathers no moss: Meaning someone who does not settle in one place rarely prospers.

This proverb is based on the fact that mosses and lichens are slow-growing organisms that don't thrive when disturbed. A 'rolling stone' refers to a wanderer, unable to settle to any job or lifestyle and is therefore characterised as unreliable and unproductive. It was quoted in 1546 by John Heywood in his collection of English proverbs although evidence suggests that it was first used by the ancient Greeks and Romans. Unfortunately for journalists world-wide, Mick Jagger’s friendship with super model Kate Moss has not yet resulted in anything more meaningful and so the inevitable headline ‘Rolling Stone gathers Moss’ remains dormant.

A watched pot never boils: Meaning time feels longer when you’re waiting for something to happen.

This proverb is ascribed to Poor Richard which was the pseudonym used by Benjamin Franklin when publishing his popular annual almanac. Franklin was also a renowned scientist and obviously knew that watching a pot has no effect on how long it takes to boil.

Like many of the most effective proverbs, this one is poetic rather than literal.

Turning a blind eye: Meaning to ignore an undesirable (or embarrassing) incident or information. This phrase is attributed to Admiral Horatio Nelson who was blinded in one eye early in his naval career. In 1801, during the Battle of Copenhagen, he was ordered to discontinue the action against the Danes. At that time, orders were transmitted via a system of signal flags and when Nelson was made aware that the battle was being called off, he lifted his telescope to his blind eye and said, “I really do not see the signal,” and continued to press home the attack. This is also related to turning a deaf ear.

In days gone by, people only took one bath per year. Baths consisted of a big tub filled with hot water and the man of the house had the privilege of bathing in the nice clean water, then all of his sons and grandpa if he was still alive and kicking. After they had finished, the wife and daughters were allowed to bathe and then last of all, the babies. By then the water was so dirty you could actually lose someone in it, hence the saying, “Don’t throw the baby out with the bath water!” However, it does beg the question, if the water was so dirty by this stage, what was the point in immersing a vulnerable baby in it? Cheesey Vegemite Pull-apart INGREDIENTS 2 cups S R flour 30g butter, chilled, chopped ¾ cup milk 1 tablespoon Vegemite ¾ cup grated tasty cheese milk to glaze METHOD Line a tray with baking paper. Sift flour; rub in butter until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs.

PETER’S PONDERINGS I wonder what the melody line or theme is that’s running through your life? If there is such a thing in our lives, I wonder how well we can hear or read it ourselves or is it something that is more clearly seen and understood by others? While I haven’t developed my music skills all that far, I rather like the thought of a pleasant melody being played out through the seasons of my life but I’m realistic enough to see that there have also been quite a few discords along the way. None-the-less, as we mature, a tune or theme of some sort probably develops in our lives and it’s worth being aware of it so that it can be nurtured or rewritten.

It seems to me that there are some themes that emerge in people’s lives that are ultimately not good for anyone. Have you heard that tune rising up in lives that is about blaming others, identifying as a victim and being controlled by history? Maybe you’ve read the theme in others about entitlements, of it being someone else’s responsibility and “there’s nothing I can do about it.” Now there may well be times in our lives

when such a theme or tune will rightly occur or we find ourselves reacting to circumstances in such a manner; well that has been my experience anyway. However, if we find that such a theme has become a tune running through our life, it’s time to change the ‘radio station’.

There are many more pleasant and helpful tunes we could have running through our lives and one I feel should have more airplay is that of gratitude. From the simple daily provisions of basic food, shelter and air to breath, to the hard work of finding a fragment of good in the midst of a very tough experience, there is much to be appreciative of and thankful for. There is a real risk in our increasingly affluent society that we lose our much needed response of gratefulness in situations great and small.

It becomes the most joyful melody line in our lives when, through all circumstances, gratitude overflows to our creator God and to those we interact with.
