DHURRINGILE TENNIS CLUB AND COMMUNITY and will coincide with ‘Neighbour Day’ BBQ. Full final results will be issued in the next Tatura Bulletin. Dhurringile will be hosting a ‘FAST 4’ tennis competition format with Tennis Victoria. This will commence in late March. If you would like to participate in the competition please contact Lisa Niglia on 04 2826 6310. Our condolences go to Carol and Jim Brisbane and families on the recent loss of Carol’s mum, Mrs Beth Brown. Thank you to the Tennis and Hall committee for providing a great luncheon for the families. Thanks also to Chris Sessions for prepping the hall prior to the event. Aaron Niglia and Charlie Murdoch Tennis has come to an end with the final series taking place in March.

Senior tennis, Premier 2, was very competitive throughout the season but did not make the final top 8. Premier 2 would like to thank all the players who committed each week and to the fill-ins who helped whenever they were available. Thanks to Kendal Clarke and Carol Brisbane. Section 2 just missed out in the top four. Fraser, who captained the side, did a great job finding players each week whenever they were short. The juniors have had better success this season. Having moved across to the Shepparton and District junior Tennis Association, Division 3 has been very competitive and have had some great wins throughout the season.

Division 2 finished on top of the ladder and will play off in the final rounds. Good luck to Paige Jackson, Rhylee Stammers, Charlie Murdoch and Aaron Niglia. Thanks to the juniors who help fill in throughout the season, Tiahna Hinck, Darcie Stammers and James Ritter. Club championships have commenced. The junior girls’ singles was won by Paige Jackson who defeated Rhylee Stammers 8-2 in a very competitive finals match. In the junior boy’s singles, Aaron Niglia defeated Charlie Murdoch 8-4 in an epic grand finale. Recently the junior players took part in the Mooroopna junior tournament. Both Aaron and Charlie teamed up together to win the 10/U boys doubles. Paige and Rhylee also teamed up in the 14/U doubles but just missed out playing off in the grand finals.

JUST A SUITCASE

My first concert was a once in a lifetime experience of seeing Michael Jackson live.

Little did I know then that it would be the last show MJ would ever perform in Melbourne.

I was ten years old! This concert introduced me to the wonders of live music and I have never looked back.

Even though nearly 20 years have passed, I have many clear memories of the experience.

The anticipation amongst the crowd, the terrible stadium food we ate for tea and mum buying me my first concert T-shirt.

My memories of the show itself are still crystal clear. I remember standing on my seat waving my hands above my head while the crowd sang Heal the World, Michael standing over the air vents with his shirt billowing behind him while his lead guitarist soloed next to him, tears in his eyes as pictures of his family rolled across the screen. But THE moment of the show occurred when Michael appeared on stage with just a suitcase. The cheer was

deafening! He proceeded to take out a series of items one at a time. First a silver glove which was accompanied by massive cheers, then a black hat followed by more cheering.

He proceeded to put both on and then pose on stage for an eternity while the crowd cheered and cheered. I truly believe he could have stood there for ever and the cheering would have continued indefinitely. After a very long time, the moment the crowd had waited years for arrived as Michael launched into Billie Jean and the house erupted! For a ten year old girl it was indescribable. It was one of the most electrifying moments I have ever experienced at a gig. The temperature in the stadium absolutely went off the chart and I first experienced the feeling of a crowd being connected in a common musical experience.

It was also the moment I discovered my true love of live music which I have been following ever since to over 100 concerts! I will never forget the gift of live music that I received from Michael Jackson.

THE MONSTER IS RETURNING TO TATURA!

We are so excited to be hosting this event again and with sponsorship from the Greater Shepparton City Council we are now prepared to advertise further afield to bring even more people to Tatura. THE TATURA TOY LIBRARY The Toy Library has been busy this month designing our new pamphlet with the help from Rodney Printers and we will launch our new logo soon! We have also been creating our picket fence for the community centre. It was a fun day had by both parents and kids.

A Selection of Poole Pottery

REG POOLE – OUR LOCAL MUSIC LEGEND Thirty years ago, a young Reg Poole appeared on the front cover of the very first Bulletin.

The Bulletin’s John Kriesfeld, spoke to Reg to find out where his musical journey has led him.

John: Do you remember the interview for the Bulletin?

Reg Poole: No, it wasn’t an interview. I remember it being in the Bulletin but I don’t know who submitted the article although I have a feeling it was Glad Brown, one of my neighbours who was always trying to get me more publicity.

John: Tell me about your musical highlights during the past thirty years.

Reg Poole: Two achievements that stand out for me are the Order of Australia Medal and the elevation to the Role of Renown in Tamworth, both which happened in 2006. The OAM was totally unexpected as I didn’t think I’d done enough to have something like that bestowed upon me although I’m certainly proud to have been a recipient. I was the thirty-third inductee into the Role of Renown and if you look down the list from its inception, there’s Slim Dusty, Tex Morton, Buddy Williams and all those great pioneers of country music that I’ve admired over the years. I’ve always considered myself to be a cow cocky from Harston, I was known as the Harston Hillbilly, and to be on the Role of Renown with those great musicians is unbelievable.

John: What about on a personal note?

Reg Poole: I’ve got two grand-children which is marvellous but probably the most significant highlight will occur five months’ time which is my fiftieth wedding anniversary.

John: Do you remember the song that was played for your wedding waltz?

Reg Poole: Good God no! That was fifty years ago.

John: I bet your wife knows.

Reg Poole: I bet she does. Anyway, we’ve had fifty years as a working team. She accompanies me wherever I go and sells the tickets at the door for the shows and promotes my CD’s.

John: How did you meet?

Reg Poole: A friend of mine from Harston got married in Kyabram and Dot was the bridesmaid and I was the best man.

John: Who have you performed with during this period?

Reg Poole: I’ve been lucky enough to have performed with so many icons of Australian country music. Musicians such as Slim, Tex and Buddy and I supported Marty Robins at the Mooroopna festival in 1995. I know Charlie Pride very well although I haven’t worked with him. I’ve also worked with several top-notch Irish musicians such as Mary Duff, Isla Grant and Mick Flaven. I was fortunate to have had a great guitarist, Sandy Atkinson, working with me for the first twenty five years of the band.

They don’t come along too often and he was one of the best.

John: Have you made many CD’s?

Reg Poole: I’ve lost count but it’s about twenty-nine. I recorded for a company run

by Eric Watson called Selection Records. He was a one man band. He had RCA distributing the records and my music was available everywhere. Things changed when we lost the RCA distribution because if people don’t see your CD in the shops then they tend not to buy it. When Eric died four years ago I started doing my own recordings. Getting airplay isn’t

easy but I still have a good following from truckies and the rodeo crowd.

John: Do you have a favourite song?

Reg Poole: I really enjoy singing ‘The Man from Snowy River’. I don’t perform it that often because it goes for about eight minutes.

The song means so much about our Australian heritage plus the fact that Slim recorded it.

John: What was your most memorable gig?

Reg Poole: Well I’ve worked in locations from the Sydney Opera House to the Birdsville Pub. Birdsville was interesting because a lot of the blokes had come into town because they thought it was a pool competition.

However, the one that stands out the most is the Mildura Festival. I performed at the first one many years ago and it’s now grown into a ten day event with artists coming from all over Australia. We just get together and have a lot of fun.

John: I thought you would have said Tamworth.

Reg Poole: I really enjoyed Tamworth for many years and it still means a lot to me but it’s become too commercialised. I’ll give you an example. John: Who were your musical heroes when you were just starting out?

Reg Poole: Without any hesitation it would be Slim Dusty. My brother Lex and I would stand in the kitchen at Harston and dial twist the old radio trying to pick up The Hillbillies.

However, nowadays I love listening to American bluegrass gospel which is full of harmonies and energy.

John: Tell me about your first guitar.

Reg Poole: I was twelve at the time and Mum bought it for me from a bloke called Freddie Thompson in Shepparton. It was a little varnished guitar with a picture of a cowboy on the front and that swung the deal for me.

Over time I learnt the pick strum method of traditional bush ballads. Nowadays I play a top of the range, Australian made, Maton Messiah guitar.

John: Do you have a favourite key that you sing in?

Reg Poole: Yes, the key of D. I call it the hillbilly key.

John: Looking back, would you have done anything differently?

Reg Poole: Not a lot really although I probably didn’t make the most of my television opportunities. I wasn’t that interested at the time which may have been a mistake.

John: What advice would you give to young musicians just starting their own journey?

Reg Poole: It can be a difficult life so if you

January 28 was recorded as being the date when the local Italian Club ran its inaugural Italian Plate horse race with prize money of $4000, with an estimated 1500 punters attending that day.

The Tatura Amateur Swimming Club returned home victorious after winning 29 medals including seven gold at the GV Championship Carnival and families were invited to bring along some meat scraps and a bit of string to try and snare a ‘coloured yabbie’ from Lake Bartlett during the 150 Year Victoria Birthday Celebration event.

Thirty years on, The Bulletin still enjoys a special place in Tatura’s every-day life. Its focus remains the same, to blend local news with local business for all in the community.

It’s over two years now since stories began appearing which featured many of our local identities together with a variety of articles and topics of interest. These have become very popular, blending in with the established format. With over 3,500 copies printed monthly, delivered free to letterboxes and available at selected outlets, The Tatura Area Community Bulletin will hopefully continue for another thirty years with its unique combination of information and entertainment.

21ST ANNUAL 100 LAP CHALLENGE

A warm morning with clear skies greeted participants in the 100 Lap Challenge on Saturday February 28. In the pool the water was warm and inviting. Fifty-one swimmers and several supporters rallied at Tatura Swimming Pool to support the Tatura Hospital and Parkvilla Aged Care Facility. Five individuals who tackled the 100 laps were Trevor Anselmi , Colin Magnay and John Stewart (Ararat), Stephanie Wilton and Timothy Runciman-Forster. The other 47 swimmers, aged from 6 to 80, made up teams which completed the 100 laps. The veterans’ team was John Stewart (Mooroopna), Ian Tavener and Peter Mccamish. The team did 104 laps so they could bank a few for next year.

There was a large contingent of young swimmers as there were many family and friends teams. They were Gayle Forster and Nicolas RuncimanForster; Ian, Jeanette, Fiona, Joseph, Lydia & Esther Moorhouse; Alison Christopher, Baye Christopher, Branden Wilson, Hailey Wilson, Kobe Wilson, Leanne Houkes-Wilson, Steve Wilson, Brenna Walker, Kade Walker, Tash Pearson, Eliza Pyke and Sarah Wilson; Lisa and Fiona Cowan. The convenor of the event, Geoff Lipshut, headed a team which included Gary Whyte, Peter and Marg Caldow. Sacha, Imogen, Peter, Damien and Gretl Finlayson continued on to 114 laps, a bit of pre-season work for next year.

Hospital staff and their families included Sue Walters, Erica Varapodio, Amelia Varapodio, Justin Watson, Claire Greenwood, Robert Miller, Cyndie Archer, Thomas Archer, Candice Archer, Donnette Millman, Maya and Tom Dooley-Heath. It was great to see this group having such a good

time and they split into two so they did 200 laps, youth versus experience.

The teams were ably assisted by Bernie Hamilton and Cheryl Miller.

The Hospital Ladies Auxiliary once again provided a delicious morning tea and welcome hot coffee for all the swimmers and supporters.

Swimmers received certificates from the Hospital and vouchers from Glenda and Jeff Alexander of Tatura Hot Bread.

Due to wonderful support from many in the community, the event has raised $4300 at the time of writing with more pledges to be collected.

Nurse Manager Jayne French announced that the funds raised would be used towards the provision of a bladder scanner for the hospital.

Thanks from the Hospital Advisory Committee to the event convener Geoff Lipshut, Laura and staff at Dawes and Vary, and Jayne, Cyndie, Michelle & the two Sue’s at the Hospital, and to all the swimmers, sponsors, supporters and helpers who organized the day and once more made it a successful and most enjoyable fundraiser on the Hospital’s calendar. Special thanks go to Debbie Stanton for her early start opening the pool on the day and Aquamoves for their assistance throughout the season.

So Many to Choose From

In light of the recent successful course that has been enjoyed by a number of people in Tatura in recent weeks, we have decided to start a social group to meet on a Friday afternoon from 1pm at the Community House to talk about books.

I often walk into the library and think, “Oh what am I going to read this time.” As I wander the aisles of books I often discount authors simply because they have a poor (in my opinion) jacket or unattractive spine.

Most of the books I have read and thoroughly enjoyed have come from a recommendation from a friend or other bookworms.

We invite people to come down on a Friday afternoon, stay as long as they want and praise or can books. We all have different taste in books, but, we all have an opinion on them.

TATURA, TOOLAMBA AND MURCHISON AUSKICK JOIN FORCES! The year 2015 will be a very exciting one for the Auskick centres in and around Tatura. After two very successful cluster sessions in 2014, it has been decided that we will come together weekly for a structured Auskick Rules Game each Friday night. We may even have some other neighbouring centres join us from time to time for a game of footy.

The Tatura Netball Association is delighted that we are choosing to run our programs parallel to the netball competition and we believe families will be impressed also. The advantage is that the Auskick Rules games will be on at the same time as the netball, meaning that families need only make the one trip.

Please continue to register through your local centre through the Auskick website. If you register early enough you will receive free tickets to selected AFL matches. The price for 2015 is set at $80. Your pack will be posted directly to you as soon as payment is made.

Auskick participants will train their skills with their coaches during a designated school lunch break and then be involved in organised games under lights in Tatura. We have so far secured football jumpers for a number of teams and are looking for more sponsors to jump on board for further sets. Please get in contact if you would like to pursue jumper sponsorship options. So far we will have Murchison Grasshoppers, Tatura Bulldogs and Toolamba Owls represented – with Stanhope Lions coming in at times.

We will require parents to help with team management, umpiring and oval set up.

Teams will be allocated on Registration Day on Friday April 17 at Tatura Park. We plan on having two divisions catering for Kinder/Prep/1 and Grade 2/3.

Knight at the

Museum Hello, I’m Jonathan Knight. Join me won’t you, as once again I visit the vast collection of odd, historic and unusual items on display here at the Tatura Museum. You know, sometimes the most interesting of treasures are those we might walk past, unaware of their significance and unless we have that spark of curiosity, we might never know what we’ve missed.

This was the case when I stood in the short hallway of the old museum building. It was there, on the right-hand wall as I faced towards the front door; strung out, almost covered behind some framed paintings. What was it? It had to be of some importance, but what? Looking for all the world like a run of wool waiting to be wound were five long lines of metal wires that were a series of kinks and odd shapes, with what looked like a swivel handle on each end. Stretched out it would have been an impressive length but what was it used for? Measuring something perhaps?

Right first time, Jonathan. This was in fact an early Victorian example of a tool used by surveyors to calculate land size and divisions for title purposes. Called a ‘link chain’, it was held out, handle to handle by ‘chainmen’ who worked under instruction from surveyors, men who braved the challenges of the early Australian bush. Known as the Gunter chain or links, it was the legal instrument used to record land sizes which are still to be found on title documents today. In the early days of settlement, lots were decided on their size, calculated by the surveyor’s link chain tool.

But how did this instrument get to be so important? For the answer we have to go back to 1620 and an English mathematician and clergyman, Edmond Gunter. It was he who invented the combination of metal loose linked, ‘tallies, teller’s, links and handles’ that make up the chain-link measuring tool. One chain equals 66 feet (20.12m) with one chain times ten being one acre. One chain is also the standard length of a cricket pitch, wicket to wicket. Still in use by the British railways for historic reasons, the link-chain is used to identify locations from one known point to another, not distances. One needs to think about that, to understand it.

The use of this measuring tool has been the legally recognised instrument in most continents for over 300 years until its replacement in the 1960’s by the steel surveyors’ tape. Now global positioning systems do all the work.

“It was lying in a heap in the old shed,” was how Andrew Crawford remembered the link chain when asked why he donated it to the museum.

But that’s all he knows. It was very old then and would likely have been used locally, but by whom? We might never know the history of this innocuous collection of metal, strung out along the wall in the museum, but its place here is a reminder of our reliance on legal and civil rules that have

Imagine waking up to banging on your front door by your neighbour claiming the garage you just had built is four inches over on his land!

A NOTE FROM HISTORY

RODNEYCommunity CWAis very strongly supported by Ten members of Rodney Junior Branch had a good night making fridge magnets at their March meeting. At their next meeting on April 2 (the night before Good Friday) they will be making Anzac biscuits which is part of an initiative of the Department of Premier and Cabinet, Veterans Affairs, to help celebrate the 100th anniversary of the landing at Gallipoli.

Members attended Sheridan branch’s Morning Coffee on Monday March 30 and enjoyed the day. The theme was aprons and blue wrens.

At our March meeting members knitted/ crotchet poppies for Anzac Day and brought along clothing, toiletries and underwear for the Marian Community which supports women and children subjected to domestic violence.

We will also be giving the children Easter Eggs and books and pencils. The Marian

members of our branch on a regular basis.

Members continue to enjoy our monthly branch lunches where members get together to chat and socialize; these are held on the 4th Thursday of the month at 12.30 at various eateries in Tatura.

Thursday April 9 is International Night, Country of Study Cameroon and Thelma Wood, our International Officer, has been providing us with detailed information on that country.

Having read a copy of Jonathan’s article before it went to press this month, reminds me of an event that was said to have occurred in Tatura in the late eighteen hundreds. Alfred Winkle was a travelling salesman who regularly visited Tatura and one of his samples included a scaled-down version of the ‘link chain’ mentioned by Mr Knight. Local talk at the time was that Alfred had become besotted with a rather generously proportioned widow who lived at the edge of town. Alfred was also very fond of cuddles but due to the girth of his beloved, his arms couldn’t quite make it ‘round on one go’, so to speak. This was a weakness Alfred had which went back centuries. His ancestral female relatives had always been big, big women. It was recorded in the fifteen hundreds, at the start of the great sea-fairing adventures, that a relative of Alfred’s, in her excitement of seeing off Columbus on his voyage of discovery, accidentally fell into the harbour thus causing a huge tsunami which helped immensely in speeding Columbus’s discovery of America.

In the light of a flickering kerosene lamp one night, Alfred devised a system that even today, and perhaps more so, solved his problem.

Starting at his lover’s navel, or where he thought it might be, he used his link-chain sample to make his cuddle complete by moving it around his lover’s girth, one length at a time, marking each move with an indelible pencil. All was well until he learned while away on one of his travelling trips, that he had a rival. Returning with some haste to Tatura, he went to his sweetheart’s side and with a wide embracing cuddle, began to measure and mark his way around her ever-increasing girth as usual until, sure enough, the rumours were true. He met his rival coming the other way; a fellow salesman with his own sample of the link chain. Alfred left Tatura that night, never to return. He’d come within an inch of true love, but in the end, he hadn’t measured up.

All Saints Annual General Meeting was held on February 13. The day began with Holy Communion with Rev. Jude, followed by the AGM. Rev. Jude chaired the meeting for the election of office bearers as follows:President - Margaret Davies, Vice President - Olwyn Milner, Secretary - Phyll Bramley, Treasurer - Val Maynaird, Assist. Treasurer - Olive Stammers, Welfare Officer - Lois Van-heek, Special Catering - Phyll Bramley and Lois Van-heek.

It seems a long time since our Christmas break-up when we decided to try something different, afternoon tea with the Parish and friends at The Gallery. It was fun and laughter with Margaret Davies and Bill Craven telling some very funny stories about what went on in yester years. Lois Van-heek recited her own special poem on what can go wrong when you teach your daughter to cook!

Exploring Easter – the Guild will create their own display in art form, of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane.

We took part in the World Day of Prayer at the Generations Church, which reminded us yet again what a lucky country we live in; with all churches of the town gathered together to worship in the one room. Rev Ron Mallon spoke on how we can be servants of God, looking after those in need in many different ways. The evening ended with a delicious supper and chatting to one another.

2016 – All Churches will join with Sacred Heart Church in their Parish, to celebrate World Day of Prayer.

Transition Tatura joined the Sustainable Living Festival at the most recent Play in the Piazza at Stuart Mock Place. There were a selection of games to keep everyone entertained, and a vegie and produce swap.

There were many conversations about energy, sustainability and the other creatures that we share our environment with, and great ideas shared.

Many local sustainability groups attended, including Shepparton-based group, Beneath the Wisteria, who discuss our response to climate change, and the Goulburn Murray Landcare Group with a fabulous local critter display, weed and native vegetation information, and a giant version of ‘snakes and drains’. GV Community Energy attended with an information table highlighting outcomes of the Tatura Energy Opportunity Study which has just been completed, and the Tatura Anglican Church kept the kids entertained creating craft items for their Easter Community project.

Transition Tatura had an Energy Descent Action Plan stand, which is a plan to reduce energy consumption in our town, and received some great suggestions about sustainability in Tatura, including in the areas of energy, waste and food. Friends of Victory Hall ran the BBQ and kept everyone fed and happy at the event. Transition Tatura are now planning their next Film Festival, and are incorporating ideas received at the Play in the Piazza into their Energy Descent Action Plan.

Transition Tatura is a not-for-profit collective of like-minded people, that plans and supports community guided responses to climate change and shrinking supplies of cheap energy. CWA – MOOROOPNA BRANCH The branch has settled in with new office bearers and also a change of venue for our meetings, the Royal Mail Hotel, Mooroopna, where a lovely meal was enjoyed prior to our general meeting which commenced at 7.30pm.

The Mooroopna Branch was invited to participate in International Women’s Day celebrations by the Greater Shepparton Women Charter Alliance Group.

This event took place at the African Community House, Poplar Avenue Shepparton. In March the branch will also participate in Trades night, an event facilitated by the Uniting Church in Mooroopna. We are busy selling CWA merchandise and also displaying the many skills we have in crafts.

Members also attended the Group Conference at Harston on February 19 and saw new Goulburn Valley West Group President Mrs. Judith Poole, being inducted. We also met the Group Secretary Mrs. Pat Love. This was a lovely day of catching up with much friendship and food.

TATURA NETBALL ASSOCIATION The Tatura Netball Association (TNA) has finished stage three of its court re-development by completing the upgrade to the lights at the Hastie Street Netball complex. The court re-development included the upgrade of the courts themselves, the erection of lights and finally the upgrade of the power connection to the lights.

“The new lights increased the electricity demand for their operation. We had to upgrade the infrastructure so we could avoid the lights and other electrical equipment shorting out,” said President Simon Pogue. “We don’t have a huge budget and are responsible for maintaining and running the netball complex. We fundraised and received some sponsorship from Advanced Ag at Shepparton and former Shire of Rodney Councillor Andrew Crawford. We’re very grateful for those sponsorships, because without them we couldn’t have completed the upgrade”.

The lights will be ready to go for the season opening of the TNA Friday night primary school competition. Players can contact Fiona Boyer on 0439 385 072 and Gaye Somers on 0417 336 160 if they’re interested in playing.

The TNA will also be entering primary school teams in the SNA primary school competition on Saturday morning, starting on 11/04/2015. Trials will be held for these teams in the 11 and Under and 13 and Under age groups. Contact Simon Pogue on 0417 305 637 with any questions.

MURCHISON AND DISTRICT SENIOR CITIZENS CLUB Our meeting this month showed a good attendance despite the number of apologies due to illness. A big thank you to Brian O'Meara for his hand-made gift to be included with our competition. Members please note there will be no April luncheon or meeting due to Easter.

For all those folk on our sick list our thoughts are with you and we wish you a speedy recovery, so that you will soon be back amongst us once more.

CONVERSATIONAL ENGLISH FOR MIGRANTS Do you have a friend, relative or neighbour who would benefit from a greater exposure to conversational English? The Tatura Community House is running a weekly English course directed specifically at migrants who want to improve their English language skills. The cost is minimal, just $2 each week, and will be held on Thursdays between 11 am and 12 noon.

MURCHISON PRIMARY SCHOOL 2015 Foundation Students

Murchison Primary School had twenty Foundation students to start the 2015 school year. As you can see from the photo they are a smiley bunch who are thoroughly enjoying school life!

Goulburn Valley tree group We are enjoying a little reflected glory at the expense of our President. His old school, Kilmore Assumption, held a ‘Night of Nights’ at Crown Casino to honour past students who in turn had honoured their educators. Amongst the legal eagles and famous surgeons ‘our Tom’ entered the Hall of Excellence for his work in Cambodia and the environment at home.

On more homely matters I thought I would draw your attention to the Leptospermum species. This is a genus of about 80 of which 60 are purely Australian, the others being New Zealand and Malaysia which surely opens up thoughts of what was joined to what and how long ago. Back to the present. These small

trees are more generally known as tea trees from the early settlers often using the tea-type leaves to boil the billy. They were the first natives to be propagated for gardens as with their white and pink flowers are most suited to hedges, low windbreaks and shelters. We keep ‘petersoniiʾ, which has lemon scented leaves and ‘madidum’, a rather darker leafed variety.

We have plenty of the farm staples ready for planting as are the more decorative callistemons, wattles and under-storey. The first Saturday on which we will be open is Easter when all our stock should be mature enough to put out in the Ground.

The second Tatura Primary School Fun Run will be held on Sunday April 19. Runners and walkers, old and young, serious and for fun, are invited to join in this community event. This year the event is being held earlier to make the most of the cooler autumn weather and running club calendars. The whole school community is getting behind the fun run. Students, parents, and teachers will band together to register, marshal and start the races, direct and support runners around the course, man drink stations and monitor stop watches.

Last year the event attracted runners from Shepparton Runners’ Club, local football clubs, boot camp groups as well as many local runners and families. A different course has been mapped out this year, more favourable to runners and walkers alike. The family walk was a great opportunity for parents, children, grandparents and babies in pushers to join in a healthy, fun activity together.

Registrations for the event are available from the school or by emailing taturaps@edumail. vic.gov.au They will also be open on the morning of the fun run from 7:30 am.

The 10km run will begin at 8:30 ($20), followed closely by the 5 km runs for adults, secondary students and primary students ($1020). At 8:45am the children’s 3km run will begin ($5) and finally at 8:50 the very popular Family Walk will commence ($10).

Thanks to the generosity of our community support and sponsors, there will be prizes on offer for the first runners across the line. The children can enjoy the jumping castle, while the cake stall with tea and coffee may tempt those who wish to indulge in a treat or just relax afterwards.

We look forward to many locals and visitors supporting this school event, so mark Sunday April 19 on the calendar now.

HARBONNIERES by James Dunn

We enjoyed the wonderful ceremony at the unveiling of the Robert Mactier statue recently and were reminded of the beautiful poem "Harbonnieres" written of that time by James Dunn, father of Judy Baker.

Robert Mathieson, President of the Tatura RSL, subsequently invited me to recite that poem at the Remembrance Day ceremony.

James was a beautiful singer, a wonderful poet and had a deep interest in Australian military history. He wrote of his country's achievements with great pride until his death in 1986. He was born in Cathkin (near Alexandra) in 1907 and went to Mansfield High School before joining the Victorian Railways in 1924 and working there for 48 years. In 1939 he took up the position of A.S.M. at Cathkin where he lived until his passing.

He wrote extensively about the railways, often in a humorous vein, and had several poems published in The Bulletin and the Railway Gazette.

Ludendorff referred to that day as “the black day of the German army in the history of the war.” This message was received by Monash at 1.15pm – “Australian flag hoisted over Harbonnieres at midday today.

ANZAC DAY DAWN SERVICE

April 25 will see the centenary of the Australian soldiers landing on the beaches of Gallipoli. The Tatura RSL has announced that it will recognise that centenary at a dawn service at the Tatura cenotaph on Anzac Day. President of the Tatura RSL, Mr Robert Mathieson, said that the RSL wanted to do something special to commemorate Australia’s landing at Gallipoli. “As there has not been a dawn service at Tatura in the past, we thought it would be a wonderful way to mark the centenary,” Mr Mathieson said.

It is also significant that it will be the first Anzac day since the unveiling of the Robert Mactier V.C statue. Don Kilgour has been invited to be the guest speaker at the dawn service. Don was invited by the Victorian premier to lead the ‘Premiers Tour of Anzac’ in which a group of Victorian students visited the battlefields of Gallipoli and Europe to learn about Australia’s involvement with war and thereby better understand our military past. Members of the public are invited to attend the dawn service.

TATURA RSL – ANZAC DAY DETAILS

The Tatura RSL Sub-Branch President and Members would like to cordially invite the people of Tatura and District to join with them in observing the Commemoration Service on Anzac Day, Saturday April 25. The service will begin at 11.00 am in the Robert Mactier V.C. Memorial Gardens, Hogan Street.

All serving and ex-service men and women along with descendents of deceased personnel are respectfully invited to join in a march along Hogan Street from Victory Hall to the Memorial Gardens. Form up time is 10.30 am for a 10.45 am march. Medals are to be worn.

As a mark of respect for the ANZAC Day Parade, all drivers along Hogan Street are asked to stop, so as to allow the marchers unrestricted passage to the Memorial Gardens.

The Tatura Lions Club have once again graciously decided to hold a community get-together BBQ in the surrounding parkland (gold coin donation please) after the Commemoration Service.

NEW OWNERS AT BYRNESIDE NURSERY After many years working in dairy farming, Matt and Taryn jumped at the chance to take on the Byrneside Nursery when the opportunity arose. Matt is a qualified horticulturist and Taryn has always had a keen interest in gardening. Their vision for the nursery is to provide the community with a great garden centre and an enjoyable gardening experience. They believe there is a need for a good nursery in the area and they hope to service this.

In time, they also have plans to open a café on the site. The nursery is open six days a week from Tuesday to Sunday, 9.00am to 5.00pm.

MURCHISON PRIMARY SCHOOL Murchison Primary School held their House Swimming Sports at the end of February as a fun way to finish off the school swimming program. It was a tight contest all day between Goulburn and Waranga with Waranga being declared the winners! It was a great day out all round and the school was very thankful for all the parents and friends who were able to help out on the day.

RUSHWORTH MACHINERY PRESERVATION CLUB The Rushworth Machinery Preservation Club, in conjunction with the Rushworth Kindergarten Community Market, is holding monthly meets. They are held every third Saturday of the month at the same time as the market.

The machinery will be on display next to the market and you are invited to look over the machinery which will include from time to time, the traction engines, an old tractor and stationary engines.

The meet will be run every month except on days of extreme fire danger or above 35° C or adverse weather conditions. The machinery will be working and on display from 9.00 am

to 12 noon, this followed by a monthly general meeting at the Criterion Hotel. If you wish to become a member, please feel free to talk to our members or attend the meeting.

The club is currently running a major raffle with some great prizes to raise money so we can restore the old Hilder’s Garage Tow Truck to working condition. Tickets are just $2.00 each and it will be drawn Easter Saturday.

The Machinery Club President, Brendan Hawking said, “I am excited about the monthly meets and encourage everyone to help support the club in its endeavours to maintain machinery that is historical to Rushworth and District.”

“In Victoria and New South Wales, the new size limits for Murray Cod could mean the days of big stuffed Cod are behind us. The new limits state that you may only keep a Murray Cod if it’s between 55cm and 75cm. Dr Paul Humphries from Charles Sturt University is searching for wall mounted stuffed Murray Cod so he and fellow researchers can study the size history of the Cod in the MurrayDarling Basin,” Federal Member for Murray, Dr Sharman Stone said. “Stuffed Cod are an important source of data; they allow researchers to discover how big the Cod grew at a specific location and at a specific point in time. Researchers can then compare the past Cod sizes in these different locations to the current population. In Murray we have many places where recreational anglers can fish for Cod, such as the Goulburn River, the Campaspe River, the Broken River, Lake Nagambie and of course the Murray River. If you know the whereabouts of any old preserved Cod you can contact Dr Humphries through his facebook page called Stuffed Murray Cod in pubs. There have been over 60 Cods in pubs identified on the study already.”

Tatura library is delighted to announce that Fleur McDonald, one of Australia’s leading female rural literature authors will visit the library on Tuesday April 21 at 6.00pm.

Fleur was born in the mid-north of South Australia, spent some of her childhood travelling in a truck with her dad, studied agriculture at university and then moved to a farm near Esperance in Western Australia. She has written six books, including Red Dust and Purple Roads, has sold over 130,000 copies and has just released her latest book Emerald Springs.

DHURRINGILE PRIMARY SCHOOL

Dhurringile Primary School has started learning Italian this year. Our Italian teacher, Fulvia, takes the students for half an hour of Italian on Monday mornings. This is done via Polycom which is a video conferencing unit as Fulvia works at Brunswick South Primary School. So far we have learnt to count to five, learnt the name of some of the colours and have learnt to say, “Hi, my name is …” The students are thoroughly enjoying learning a new language.

On Wednesday February 18, the students travelled to Mooroopna Park Primary School to meet with players from the Carlton Football Club. The students had a kick of the footy and were able to ask the players questions.

The students enjoyed this experience.

Everybody Has A Story OF DUCKS, CHOOKS AND MY .22 RIFLE

Warning! This story may traumatise sensitive souls. It certainly traumatised me - JK.

Many years ago, my wife and I owned a small fifteen acre farmlet at Harston. Our menagerie consisted of a dozen beef cattle, a house cow, Gertie the goat, two dogs, a couple of sheep, several cats and an assorted array of hens.

Although we had several white hens, my wife favoured bantams. Their eggs were slightly smaller but they made excellent mothers and would go ‘clucky’ at the drop of a hat. We had a separate room in the henhouse for the clucky hens so they wouldn’t be disturbed by the others. My wife had set one hen on a batch of eggs and she’d been sitting there for about twenty days when we put in another hen to sit on her own batch of eggs. During the night, for some unknown reason, they swapped nests and the following day, the hen that had been sitting on her eggs for a mere twentyfour hours, hatched her eggs. She must have thought, “Hmm, this egg sitting business is easy. I’m not sure why the other hens make such a fuss.” In the meantime, the hen that had been waiting patiently for twenty-one days now had to sit there for another three weeks.

But being a bantam, she took it in her stride.

A high proportion of the eggs hatched by the bantams turned out to be roosters. The hens usually returned to the hen house at dusk and we’d then lock them away for the night to protect them from foxes. However, the young roosters decided they’d be better off in the high branches of the willow trees growing along our irrigation channels. Now perhaps they could see the sun much earlier from their high vantage point or maybe they were just being difficult but they started crowing at three o’clock in the morning. After several weeks of this I decided that enough was enough. I took out my .22 rifle, went out into the paddock at dusk and one by one, shot them out of the trees. We ate tough and stringy chicken for the next month but were able to sleep much better at night.

One day, my boys found some duck eggs in one of the paddocks and brought them back to the house and asked if they could hatch them. We had a clucky bantam hen (there was always a clucky bantam hen) so we put the eggs under her and waited to see if they’d hatch. The hens had a strict pecking order and the bantam we’d chosen was at the bottom and was continually being picked on, or should that be pecked on, by the other birds.

However, she did an excellent job and hatched out eight little ducklings.

Things went well for her until she took her new brood past an irrigation channel near the hen house and the ducklings immediately dived in and began swimming around. The distressed mother hen ran frantically up and down beside the channel clucking loudly as she exhorted her charges to get out of the water but of course, to no avail. However, it wasn’t all bad news for her. As the ducklings

grew into ducks, they would follow her around and any hen rash enough to pick on their mother was quickly discouraged with a few fierce pecks. Unfortunately for the mother hen, her ascent up the pecking order disappeared the following spring when the ducks flew away and didn’t return. I, on the other hand was secretly pleased.

We’d raised ducks for the dinner table on a previous occasion and when they were sufficiently plump, my wife had chosen a duck, taken it to the wooden block and chopped its head off. The headless duck had then run around the yard with blood spouting everywhere while our children screamed in horror. So I suggested to my wife that it would be much more humane and easier on the children if I simply shot the next duck with my .22 rifle. She agreed to my suggestion although she gave me that special look that wives reserve for their idiot husbands.

A couple of weeks later the big day arrived and with my wife and children safely watching through the kitchen window, I loaded my rifle and began stalking the chosen duck in the backyard. As it sauntered into range, I took careful aim and pulled the trigger. I’m an excellent shot but on this occasion my gun sights were adjusted slightly low and I shot the duck through its neck. The duck now had two thin streams of blood pouring from its neck and it stopped for a moment, clearly puzzled. It knew something had happened but wasn’t sure what it was. I quickly reloaded, took aim and fired again. However, owing to the gun sights, I shot marginally low and the poor duck now had four fountains of blood flowing from its neck. The duck appeared stunned as I reloaded and fired again with

the same unfortunate result. The duck finally realised that it was in some danger and quickly retreated to the safety of the duck house. So, cursing inwardly, I reloaded for the last time and crawled through the confined space of the duck house to where the poor duck was lying in a pool of blood. I stretched out my arm so the gun barrel was pointing directly at the duck’s head and as it turned to look at me with pitiful eyes, I pulled the trigger. After dragging the duck’s body back to my wife and my traumatised children, I suggested that perhaps next time it might be more humane and easier on the children if she used an axe. I then locked the gun in the cupboard and never used it again.

Recently we have had a spate of dogs requiring surgery to remove foreign objects which have lodged in their stomach or intestines. Dogs with gastrointestinal obstructions become very sick and will not survive without surgery to remove the offending object. Sadly, even then, many of our beloved pets never recover.

I am sure there are many owners out there who have dogs who will just chew and eat everything! Many items will not pass through the gastrointestinal tract and therefore cause a blockage. Items include pet’s and kid’s toys, string, leashes, sticks, as well as human food scraps. Most of the bowel obstructions we see here are from bones, the dreaded corn cob and balls of string (usually cats).

Symptoms of foreign body (FB) obstructions vary depending on the location and type of obstruction and the amount of time it has been present.

Common symptoms include abdominal pain, vomiting, bloating and failure to pass faeces and well as signs of severe illness such as dehydration and shock. Unfortunately FB can sometimes lead to perforation of the gastrointestinal tract, causing spillage of gut contents into the abdomen.

This leads to inflammation of the abdominal lining (peritonitis) and allows bacterial infection which can be life threatening.

Often intestinal obstructions can be challenging to diagnose. If we are concerned your pet may have a FB lodged somewhere, the first step is abdominal x-rays. If these are not conclusive, we may need to give your pet barium (an oral contrast agent that we can trace all the way through the gastrointestinal tract) to see if there are any blockages.

Unfortunately, dogs which we suspect have FB obstructions, need to have surgery to look for and remove them. We need to perform a laparotomy (incision into the abdomen) and, depending on the location of the FB, we may also need to incise into the stomach and/or small intestines. In severe cases, the obstruction could have perforated the bowel, or a section of bowel may have become devitalised and ‘died’. We may need to remove a section of bowel and join it again, so these surgeries are fraught with more possible complications.

Recovery can occur with 1-2 days in hospital, but it can be significantly longer. If you are concerned your pet may have eaten a FB, please speak to one of our friendly vets.

A WALK ACROSS THE HIGH COUNTRY by Mathew Piercy

A Fine Spot for a Camp From late October 2014, a friend and I embarked on an epic journey across the Australian Alps. It involved 660km of walking from Walhalla in East Gippsland, to Tharwa near Canberra following the Great Dividing Range. I travelled with a long-time friend, who happened to be my boss in the past. This resulted in us having a good knowledge of each other’s personalities, essential for a walk of this nature.

During the 40 days of walking we encountered many challenges, balancing food and water rations, surviving bad weather, getting lost (briefly) and experiencing equipment problems such as cookers that stopped working, punctures in water bladders and pack strap breakages. While each of these can make the experience one to forget rather than to remember, they were mostly met with a willingness to keep going and adjust rather than give up. Body aches and pains were another inevitable aspect of a walk of this length, but fortunately no serious injuries were sustained. Blisters, tinea and some serious BO were definitely part of the package.

The Divide consists of a series of mountain ranges travelling side by side, beginning in central Victoria and rising to take in the mountains of the Alpine ski fields of Bulla, Hotham, Kosciuszko (Thredbo) and then turning east to continue north from NSW to Queensland. We began on the Divide at Baw Baw plateau (a 2 day climb from Walhalla) and continued on it to Kiandra, a former gold field in NSW near the Snowy Mountains, and pressed northwards along another range to Canberra. A number of well-known rivers have their source in the mountains of the Divide, such as the Murray, Snowy, Mitta Mitta (also called Big River) and Murrumbidgee.

Our first experience of the Divide was what might be called a baptism of fire, or rather, snow. We camped in the snow on the top of Baw Baw and battled hypothermia for a night, seriously thinking about giving up only two days into the walk. Despite this early scare, we continued through the wooded valley of

At the High Country Hut the Thomson River and then to the former goldfields of the 1860’s, along the Jordan River between Jamieson near Mansfield and Gippsland. From there we started to enjoy ourselves along remote 4WD tracks, marvelling at who would be brave or stupid enough to attempt such tracks as Champion Spur or remote river crossings at Black River. We then climbed again to the peaks of Shillinglaw and Skene, which looked a bleak site covered in dead snow gums from previous bushfires, before collecting our largest food drop and turning north toward Bulla and Buffalo along a remote track crossing peaks and valleys covered with snow gums, steep descents, 360 degree views and the red conglomerate rocks of Mt McDonald. It is here that we reached the turning point, gaining confidence in navigation and route-finding in country where markers are relatively few and the use of a compass and map essential.

My friend returned to Melbourne after discovering a pack strap had broken, leaving a five day solo walk towards Hotham. The spectacular country of the Crosscut Saw, a ridgeline walk with steep descents on both sides, is followed by rock scrambling up two tilted rock formations formidably named the Razor and Viking. A bit of steel entered the soul after that section, as water is scarce and by the end of the day I was very glad to see the water tank (especially with water in it!)

After re-uniting with my mate at Hotham, we crossed the vast plains of the Bogong High Plains, with brumbies grazing and wind blowing. The country beyond is punctuated by huts, built by graziers, skiers or water management workers for accommodation or shelter, and now utilised by bushwalkers in the summer months. Many of these have historic significance and interesting stories behind them of the robust, often eccentric characters who built and first occupied them.

Highlights of the trip were finding the source of the Murray, a spring at a place called Forrest Hill, meeting other walkers on the track, and listening to the deep tones of Leonard Cohen whilst enjoying a cup of hot chocolate

and falling asleep to the sound of a flowing creek. The birdlife was impressive, with black cockies, gang-gangs, currawongs all encountered, along with numerous unnamed smaller birds with interesting calls resembling the cheep-cheep of a monkey or the complex chop-chop sound of a currawong. (We had debates as to exactly what bird made this call sounding a bit like a chicken waking up).

We saw brumbies, sambar deer, wild dogs (fortunately not at close range) as well as the more commonplace eastern greys and rock wallabies.

I was surprised at how vast the wilderness area was, particularly in Victoria and the ACT. The remoteness meant contact with people was limited, especially in the remote logging tracks and away from major roads. Physically the walk was hard, but not very hard, with most of the climbs being in the first two weeks. For the most part, walking was on former vehicle tracks, with limited sections of navigation with a map and compass. We used a GPS for off-track side trips and a few times along the main track when the path was not clear.

An emergency beacon was carried. We used seven drops of food, stored in plastic barrels at road crossings along the walk. Nearly all the food survived despite being there for up to seven weeks.

Overall I would recommend this walk to anyone who enjoys bushwalking and is looking for a more challenging experience. It is certainly a great way to experience the high country of Australia, better known for it vast deserts and outback.

Geoff Cabble receiving his Hall of Fame certificate from George Ferguson Turaton’s Annual General Meeting on February 2 was opened by President George Ferguson who began proceedings by inducting Geoff Cabble into their Hall of Fame. After the annual reports were received the office-bearers were elected. George Ferguson was re-elected as president, Bill Milner vice-president, Keith Bryant secretary and Denise Robertson treasurer and music director. Shirley Ferguson then outlined the program for the year. The May Concert will be a tribute to the anniversary of the Gallipoli landing and will include items from the Shepparton Brass and Wind and a range of artists. It will take place at Eastbank on Saturday May 23 and Sunday May 24.

The newly elected Turaton Committee members This is the speech made by George Ferguson in inducting Geoff Cabble.

“Geoff Cabble started sharing his musical talents in the amateur field in the Goulburn Valley around 1965, and with Bev Twig, formed The Light Music Company which was the fore-runner of STAG. The Shepparton Light Music Company performed many major musicals with Geoff at the helm musically.

He also served with The Shepparton Brass Band, the Carols by Candlelight committee, the ‘Georgy Award’ in their inaugural years and in many other musical areas.

Geoff’s first production was The Drunkard but the major contribution in the history of Turaton was the majestic production of Camelot in October 1991. It was truly a magnificent and lavish production receiving wide-spread acclamation and praise. In 1998 he took over

as accompanist for Turaton when Audrey Keeley retired and then two years later became Turaton’s Music Director and Accompanist.

Geoff was responsible for the production and accompaniment for twelve theatre restaurants along with fifteen May Concerts. What a milestone to have completed over the last twenty years! He was made a Life Member of Turaton in 2008 and now has the distinction of joining the Turaton Hall of Fame. The other members you will be joining are, Ruth McCracken 2007 and David Vibert 2008.

CREATE TATURA’S ENERGY FUTURE WITH US! Members of the Tatura Energy Opportunity Study have been out and about in Tatura discussing the outcomes of the recently delivered Study report. Geoff Lodge, CEO of GV Community Energy (GVCE) attended a recent Tatura Community Plan meeting to explain the study outcomes and outline future directions in energy for both industry and the community. Members attended the Sustainable Living Festival/Play in the Piazza, and a community consultation session at Stuart Mock Place, and spoke with residents about the study and the ‘Creating Tatura’s Energy Future’ brochure, which has been distributed to local mailboxes. The key finding of the Study is a projected additional demand for electricity of between 30-35 MW over the next five years.

As a result of the report, the Study Group have endorsed GVCE to establish a communitybased group, the Tatura Energy Group (TEG), which will initially be under the governance of GVCE. The TEG will seek funding to create opportunities for our industries, businesses and residents to work together in addressing the current energy constraints in Tatura due to infrastructure and supply issues, by undertaking studies into the following four key program areas: Energy Management detail new opportunities, including ownership of electricity infrastructure and retailing options to reduce power bills; Energy Efficiency – identify new technologies and practises to use less energy, and supporting residents and businesses to adopt energyefficient practices; Alternative Energy – evaluate alternative energy sources such as bio, solar and hydro energy to supply our future energy needs; Sustainable Future – evaluate the potential of improving supply chain networks to convert waste from agriculture, industry and households into energy, thereby diverting this waste from landfill and optimising the value of the waste and reducing pressure on other energy and water supplies.

HERITAGE DAY AT MERRIGUM

Like to see how things were done in the old days? Come to Merrigum Historical Society’s annual Heritage Day on Sunday March 29.

This popular event, which consistently draws a crowd of around two hundred, features demonstrations of pioneering skills and crafts.

Florence Halliday, Secretary of the Merrigum Historical Society, said the small committee works hard to provide an excellent range of displays, complemented by collectables and other exhibits.

The emphasis is on operating rather than static displays. On the farm front, visitors can watch blade and machine shearing, hay-baling with a 1940s stationary baler, milk-separating and butter-churning, and more. The butter, incidentally, is for sale, but orders need to be in early, as it is very popular.

On the household side, ladies will be showing the effort that went into the washing and ironing of clothes when using a washboard and stove-heated flat irons. Visitors can also

see sewing carried out on a treadle machine.

Also on display will be the arts of sleepercutting, wood-turning and ropemaking.

Vintage engines will be in action and visitors can see Morse code in use to relay messages.

A wide range of exhibits and collectables will be on display, including vintage gramophones (a new feature), radios and a beautifully presented collection of buttons. A cottage garden display will offer plants for sale.

Special features this year be ‘Shear, Spin, Knit’ of wool straight from the sheep’s back and an Old Time Photo Studio. Damper can also be sampled. Homemade cakes, biscuits, slices, etc., will be available at the Museum’s General Store. A BBQ lunch is available.

2015 has been splendid so far at Shepparton Toastmasters Club. Many guests have attended meetings including a pair of experienced Toastmasters who are on the road travelling around Australia. They enhanced our February and March meetings and we look forward to seeing them again in future.

The wider Toastmasters network is a great feature of the organisation. Nearly everywhere you travel worldwide you can look up a local club, attend a meeting and meet others who are passionate about public speaking and full of unique stories. A city toastmaster who visited Shepparton last year spoke at a club in Malta while on holiday!

The enthusiasm of local members old and new has been fantastic. Everyone brings something unique and worthwhile to the table each meeting. Early this month we discussed the theme Freedom. We also heard a speech about an obsession with cars and one on training your speaking voice. In the next few meetings we are due to hear some first speeches from new members which will be exciting.

The most rewarding part of Toastmasters is seeing each member develop confidence from the first time they attend a meeting to their first prepared speech and beyond. Hearing many great stories and ideas is another inspiring aspect of a Toastmasters meeting.

TATURA LIONS CLUB Lions Club of Tatura held their annual Lions Youth of the Year competition on February 24.

The contestants were: Alex Cox - Goulburn Valley Grammar, Ali Reza Bangash - Wanganui High, Raj Singh Parhaar - Wanganui High and Natasha Goldberg - Mooroopna Secondary College.

Judges for the evening were: Neil Lowe, Carlie Osiurak and Geoff Earl.

The Overall Winner was Alex Cox and Public Speaking Winner was Raj Singh Parhaar.

A great evening was held with 44 in attendance and a fabulous meal served by the Tatura Senior Citizens Members.

The February meeting held on Thursday 26, was a vibrant one with everyone enjoying our new venue and being able to have lunch there after the meeting. It was nice to catch up at morning tea, as we had extra time due to there being no Member Behind the Badge.

Our guest speaker was Mr Don Horsburgh who has been a volunteer with the Puffing Billy Railway for 24 years and is the Team Leader of the Visiting Speakers Panel. The railway celebrated its 114th birthday on December 18, 2014. It is now more than 60 years since the narrow gauge railway, which runs each day from Belgrave to Gembrook, was taken over from the Victorian Railways to be run by volunteers. Don gave us a brief history of the Victorian Railways, beginning first of all in Port Melbourne and explained the different sized gauges which were once in use, and other interesting facts. Puffing Billy is one of the finest preserved steam railways in the world and is a very popular tourist attraction. Overseas and interstate visitors come up by the coach load, adding to the amazing total of more than ten million passengers since operating as a tourist railway in July 1962. Another marvellous story of

what dedicated volunteers can achieve. Don is a very polished speaker with a marvellous memory who clearly loves his involvement with the Puffing Billy Railway and all it entails. Ev Leahy presented Don with a gift and thanked him on behalf of the club.

The members enjoyed their recent trip to the Kyabram Town Hall where they visited the Boudoir Exhibition, lunching afterwards at the Kyabram Club.

On March 5 a busload of members visited the Lotus Gardens at Yarra Junction. One of the members described it as ‘absolute magic’. The setting was beautiful, displaying the waterlily, which were amazing colours and huge, a lovely sight. They later visited the Chocolate Factory at Yarra Glen. In all, another great trip for the members.

TATURA FOOTBALL NETBALL CLUB NEWS The club is about to embark on another season of footy and netball and we are quickly heading towards our first game against Kyabram on Good Friday. The feeling and atmosphere around the club at the moment is fantastic with training numbers in both footy and netball swelling prior to the commencement of practice games The joint training session with the footballers and netballers, a few weeks ago was a resounding success. It was a fantastic night where we all came together as a football netball community with all participants and their families sharing a meal together in the Ballantyne Centre afterwards. Stand by for the next one, the more players, supporters and families we can bring together the stronger our club will be.

SCARF AND SCARF CLIP The scarf has its roots in Rome, where its purpose was to help people keep clean, not to make a fashion statement. A man would carry one with him while he worked in hot weather to combat perspiration, wearing it either around his neck or on his belt.

Another early use for scarves was military distinction. One way a warrior's station could be determined was by his hairstyle and uniform accents, including scarves.

Popular fashion houses manufactured scarves as fashion items in the 1800s. These were usually made from silk with ornate patterns.

As fashion scarf production increased due to consumer demand, they were made in cheaper fabrics such as rayon so that women, who could not previously afford the luxe silk scarves, could now indulge in the fashionable accessory as well.

Shepparton Theatre Arts Group presented local theatre goers with another fantastic Shepparton Festival 10 in Ten show early this month. These festival shows showcase local performing arts talent both on and off stage. The full house at the Sunday matinee chattered excitedly before the start of the 10 short plays all linked by the festival theme, ‘Grown, Picked and Packed’. The crowd was highly entertained throughout the show. The plays explored a range of themes, many venturing into dark territory.

A battered wife used a chainsaw to prepare her husband’s body for plant fertiliser. The reveal of the chainsaw at the conclusion of the piece was brilliant. Two crooks decided to beat a man up for not paying child support. A recently dumped boyfriend stumbled across his girlfriend’s infidelity

with his best friend while helping his friend move house. A single girl rented an isolated cottage off a sinister landlord. The landlord character was a particular highlight for his dangerous and sickening demeanour.

Another highlight was a play which gave an insight into the history of Shepparton told by an old gossiping woman being assessed by an aged care worker. The pace was frenetic and elicited many laughs from the audience.

Amy Hollow closed the show strongly as an intoxicated woman looking for the ideal man on Valentine’s Day in the play, ‘Fruit and Nuts’. The calibre of this 10 in Ten production confirms the remainder of the STAG 2015 season is not to be missed.

Scarf clips, also referred to as scarf ring or scarf slide, operate much like a bolo slide (worn by cowboys and sheriffs), although most scarf clips can have hinges, which enable them to clip into place. There are several types of scarf clips but each has the same purpose. It should be the correct size and weight to allow a silk scarf to slip through and stay in place. Scarf clips can be used with silk, cashmere, wool or any other scarf material.

TATURA GARDEN CENTRE If April means autumn to you, get out your garden tools and get moving.

As always, we're slaves to the whims of nature. It always seems autumn drags its heels and then runs full force into winter. Be prepared with an organized ‘To Do’ list and take advantage of whatever nice days we are afforded. Our plants will still need pruning, feeding and weeding even if the sun doesn't always shine.

APRIL GARDENING PLAN Autumn is the time to make new plants from cuttings. Take 10cm cuttings from hardwood herbs such as rosemary and bay or natives such as banksias, grevillea and coastal rosemary. Remove the lower leaves, dip cuttings into hormone powder or Rooting Hormone Gel, and pot in small containers of premium potting mix. Keep just moist and shelter from strong wind and sun.

Check your lawn and make sure any weeds you sprayed last month are dying. Repeat the treatment if necessary. Aerate the lawn with a garden fork and scatter lime lightly over it. This sweetens the soil after many years of lawn food application. Rejuvenate tired lawns with an autumn feeding to ready them for the onset of cool winter weather.

Gather fallen leaves, grass clippings, kitchen scraps and shredded prunings, and layer them in a compost bin. Turn periodically with a garden fork to allow air to circulate and feed organisms which helps to decompose the organic matter quickly. Don‘t overload your compost with one particular ingredient – maintain a mix. Earthworms are a sign your soil is fertile. When you add organic matter such as leaves and cow manure to your garden soil, you will attract earthworms, so there is no need to add more worms to your garden. The worms you’ve attracted with organic matter will add nutrients from their castings, and make tunnels.

If you have cymbidium orchids, they should be placed in a lightly broken sunlight position with some wind protection to encourage good flower spikes during winter and spring. Yates Orchid food can be used during the growing season. This will ensure healthy growth and promotes flowering.

Trim hedges before the onset of winter to keep them compact and bushy from ground level. A general purpose fertiliser application will also help with its autumn growth.

Why not start a tradition by planting poppies to commemorate our returned soldiers for ANZAC day. Dahlias also make a colourful addition to your garden. They grow from an underground tuber, which makes for prolific growth through spring and summer then flowers in autumn. Dahlias flower in all colours, so carefully choose the colours

that harmonise with the rest of your garden.

Camellias and autumn gardens are a combination that’s hard to beat.

Although camellias have been coming into bloom for several months, we are only at the beginning of their season. Expect a succession of glorious blooms for months. Indeed, camellias flower from now until spring so take time to admire camellias in gardens, or visit a nursery to buy a camellia in flower to add to your garden. There are two main camellia species grown in gardens and many hybrids. These are camellia sasanqua (usually just called sasanquas) and C. japonica (referred to as japonicas).

Although most camellias prefer a semi-shaded position, they grow in full sun or shade. Remember though, the more sun exposure, the more water camellias need, particularly after planting and during flowering.

Sasanquas perform well in full sun but need less water and are less stressed with a little shade. The japonicas that cope best with full sun conditions are the red-flowered varieties such as ‘Bob Hope’.

Whether you are growing camellias in sun or shade, make sure their root system is covered with a generous layer of organic matter such as leaf mould, well-rotted cow manure or compost. Renew the mulch periodically through the year by adding more to the top. There is no need to dig it in, indeed, digging around camellias damages the roots and should be avoided.

What’s good to plant this month you ask? In the vegetable patch you can plant broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, silverbeet, peas, snow peas, onions, lettuce, cabbage, celery, beetroot, leek, shallots, and spinach.

In the garden you can plant primula, pansies, dahlia, begonia, polyanthus, stock, sweet William, Livingstone daisy, foxglove, delphinium, kale, calendula, chrysanthemum, alyssum and bellus.

It’s perfect weather now to be getting out in the garden or vegie patch. The garden will soon love the relief from the heat now that we are heading for some cooler months, so give your garden a good feed, a good watering, and a good weeding. Mulch up the patch and get stuck into planting some vegetables. Nothing beats the rewards of eating beautiful home grown tasty, healthy vegetables.

YES, BUT IS IT A FLY?

A fly has snuck into my fly-proof home. Now that might not be a big deal except this is no ordinary fly. I recall doing my weekend thing, bringing in plastic shopping bags which had been filled a few minutes before at the local supermarket. Then I realised that the fly-wire door behind me hadn’t closed properly. No problem, all secure now. There was no indication of what was to come as I retired that night, blissfully unaware that I would, the following morning, come face to face with an insect so cunning and devious it was hard to believe it was just a fly.

Mornings and breakfasts go together don’t they? Time to separate dreams from reality but what was to follow had me doubting whether I was awake or in weetbix-inspired fantasy. It was on the kitchen table watching me; a small dark, innocuous-looking fly. It seemed to be taking its time to wander past my breakfast spread of toast and ginger marmalade as though about to launch itself for a share. I waved it away, only for it to return to the same spot. What a cheek! I waved it away again. Back it landed as if teasing me. Well we’ll see about that.

It was time for some serious fly disposal. I should consult the good book Google…

Flies seem to have mutated, have you noticed? Once upon a time you could sneak up on one and Whack! Now getting close with a deadly squasher of some sort as it sits, seemingly pre-occupied on some surface having a nibble is impossible. Before you can prepare a leverage action, it’s off into orbit. They have an uncanny ability now to know you mean them harm and have found places to hide, like under the fridge, multiple eyes watching…watching.

Google offered nothing other than to suggest I zap my fly, drape it in the stars and stripes and escort it out the back door. Zap? Fly spray?

I am one who avoids the use of chemical sprays. I have aged enough to know how to use the old slap with a tea towel, which my grandpa showed me. A twist of the towel, a right angle aim and flick! But despite Grandpa’s technique, this particular fly had the incredible ability to know what’s coming. Like Superman, it’s faster than a speeding bullet. No matter the angle of attack, it’s gone!

Lately it has taken a very personal interest in what I do. It seems the moment I turn on my electric shaver, it settles on the bathroom bench, little front legs mimicking my every move. Thursdays with a pizza in front of the TV have become a wave of ever-increasing curses as I attempt to find a view free from its insistent demands for a share. This has to stop. I want my life back.

Now I know there are supermarket shelves stacked with ways to eliminate insects, flies in particular. Don’t you know flies know that?

If they see you buying fly spray for example, they follow you home so they can tell their mates! “This guy has a lethal weapon brothers, get under the fridge!” None of what I say is paranoid. I am in the grip of a fly take-over with me the victim. My fly has defeated all attempts to eliminate it from my home; fly spray it is then, but before I do I’ll try one last thing…starch! Spray starch. I waited, can primed and the fly-wire door open. Sure enough my irritating invader landed on the kitchen table. “Gotcha!” I yelled, giving it a blast of starch, thinking its little wings would stiffen and it would float gently out the door. Nope.

It did a smart u-turn and glided under the fridge.

We should bring back the fly paper. A small conical cardboard container which when unwrapped would hang from the light bulb above the kitchen table, its sides coated with sticky glue. Any fly that got close, got stuck. We never threw ours out until there was no more room left for another fly to stick.

Reluctantly, at the cost of four dollars for a can of fly spray, I have finely eliminated my annoying intruder—I think. It wasn’t easy. I watched it stroll along like a lord on my kitchen table, certain of its place that is, until I pointed the cylinder and zap! It did a couple of acrobatic tumbles and rolled over the edge. I’ve not seen it since. Perhaps it’s gone under the fridge, multiple eyes watching..watching.

WWII CAMP SITE TOUR Countless times I had passed the Tatura Museum on the corner of Hogan and Ross Streets with the thought that one day when I'm bored witless I'll go and check it out. Eventually that day arrived and as I entered, little did I realize that I was about to go from bored witless to totally gob smacked.

I was greeted by an immaculately groomed, silver haired lady with sparkling eyes and a huge smile. It soon became apparent that the guy who invented the term, ‘talk the hind leg off a donkey’ had enjoyed the pleasure of making this lady’s acquaintance. But what a fascinating wealth of information.

It seems that during WW2 there were seven prisoner of war and civilian internment camps in the Murchison, Tatura and Rushworth area holding up to 10,000 inmates. The prisoners of war were of course German, Italian and Japanese military personnel. The civilian internees were of the same nationalities, men women and children deemed ‘enemy aliens’, and rounded up in South Africa, Persia, Singapore, New Guinea etc. The stories of their survival, ingenuity and adaptability to arduous conditions were amazing.

Just as amazing, however, was the fact that a small group of people in a town the size of Tatura could collect, catalogue and exhibit such a vast array of artifacts - hundreds of items donated by ex internees or their descendants. Incredible!

If you've been procrastinating about a visit to the museum, this is your chance to put it right.

During April/May the National Trust of Australia is holding a Heritage Festival and has invited the Tatura Historical Society to participate.

Therefore, on Saturday May 2 the Society will hold a Tatura History Day a feature of which will be a camp site tour. On that day the museum will open at 10.00am for people to view the exhibits and at 1.00pm a bus will depart on the tour. Although the camps have long ago been dismantled, the sites still retain the ruins of buildings and facilities. Of course the tour will include a comprehensive explanation of what we are looking at.

TATURA BOWLS CLUB In windy and trying conditions, John Crilly (S) and Nick Tziros held on to win against Terry Gale (S) and Pat Fulham to take out the Tatura Bowls Club Men's Pairs Championship for the 2014/15 season winning 20 to14. The game was extremely close over the 18 ends with both teams winning 9 ends each with a couple of dead ends in the mix. However Crilly and Tziros managed to score extra shots on their winning ends to take out the championship.

Tatura Bowls Club's 100Up Championship final has been concluded following the completion of the 2014/15 bowls season. John Crilly took out the Championship final against Freda Clement. This was John's second club win for the season having also won the Men's club pairs with partner Nick Tziros. Freda Clement has a number of Championship club events still to be completed in the Women's and Mixed bowls events.

Maya Dooley-Heath 2nd Patrol Leader with Hon Wendy Lovell The birthday of the Guides’ Founders, Baden and Olive Powell, was celebrated on February 22. This special date is called ‘Thinking Day’, when we think of others in war torn countries and also those in need generally. Thank you to our treasurer, Jill Wright for taking us to Shepparton to meet the coach for our trip to Chiltern.

Simmu Randhawa, Caitlin Wright and Moara Smith came home with Thinking Day Badges, well done girls. It was 36 degrees and it was really hard work to find Ned Kelly’s bag of gold in the bush, walking over objects on a swaying bridge tested us, but we made it! Caitlin Wright won the ‘gumboot throwing’ contest, no badge for that but plenty of cheers from the Tatura Guides. The girls joined in many more activities such as jewellery making, book marks with gum leaves and a favourite was dress up belly dancing! Was it a fun day? ‘Yes of course it was.’

It was tiring and rewarding for trying new skills and doing the best one could on their own level.

Isabelle and Audrey Spedding, Maya Dooley-Heath, Moara Smith and Caitlin Wright received their Boating Badges when they attended Boating and Canoeing at Victoria Lake Shepparton. This is a Special Skilled Badge.

On March 19 at 5.30 – 7pm, the Guides and Leaders will go out door knocking for Red Cross.

On May 2 and 3, the Guides will camp out at the ‘Snooze fest on Safari 2015 Sleep Over.’ There will be a guided night safari walk to see the animals on the Pula Trail. All activities, including crafts, games and movies, will be held under the stars. It will be a great experience for the Guides.

In 2014 we completed all requirements regarding electricity. In 2015 our aim is to completely renovate the kitchen due to health reasons. Built in approximately 1937, it has served the Guides well, but the time has come! The asbestos lining has to be removed first of all. We are looking at approximately $6-7000 so there will lots of sausage sizzles and the like.

The Guides have to learn to help themselves achieve what is necessary.

Guiding is very worthwhile for the children of today, especially the girls going into teens learning to be leaders in our community.

The Guides had a special guest speaker on March 7. Popular politician, The Hon Wendy Lovell MP spoke to the girls about her experiences when she was in Guides and also the values regarding leadership. She explained everything very clearly and the girls asked her a lot of questions, a marvellous example for the Guides to follow.

Winners Are Grinners!

VICTORIAN BAKING SHOW The Baking Association of Australia recently held the Victorian Baking Show in Shepparton. Over 100 bakeries from all over Australia competed.

The entries were a vast range of bakery products including bread, pies, cakes and Australia’s Best Hot Cross Bun Competition.

Tatura Hot Bread entered and were thrilled to gain 25 prizes. One of the awards Jeff and his Bakers, Graeme and John were after was The Best Vanilla Slice. To Jeff’s delight, it gained first place. They also gained 1st prize for their Fruit Scones, Grain Cob Loaf and their Apple Pie. They were awarded 2nd prizes for White Hi Tin, Wholemeal Pipe Loaf, Gourmet Pull Apart Loaf, Grain Cob, Large Fruit Flan, Fruit Scones, Apple Pies & Vanilla Slices.

They gained 3rd Prizes for White Sandwich Loaf, White Hi Tin, Wholemeal Pipe Loaf, Gourmet Pull Apart Loaf, Grain Cob, Gourmet Beef Pies, Sausage Rolls, Large Fruit Flan and Fruit Scones.

Another highlight this year was that we had an Apprentice who could enter the competition. Ben Werner entered four products and gained 1st for his White Sandwich Loaf, 2nd for his Three Strand Plait and 3rd for both his Fruit Flans and Decorated Cake. Ben has been with us for just under a year and had only completed one week of Trade School.

At the presentation Dinner, Ben’s family were there to see him presented with his awards, which was a very proud and exciting night for them all.

Overall, another very successful competition for the Tatura Hot Bread team.

The Murchison Heritage Centre at 4 Stevenson Street re-opened to the public each day over the Labour Day long weekend. A steady flow of visitors came to see the improved building and really enjoyed the new lay-out with fresh displays according to the enthusiastic remarks and comments written in the Visitors Book.

Historical Society Members are finding they can offer a much better experience to visitors. The new extension blends well with the existing

building and is very easy to work in.

Regular opening on Saturday mornings are again in place with a slightly changed time of 10am – 12.30pm. Entry is a gold coin donation, school children are free.

Groups are also welcome to the Heritage Centre which can include a town tour. Call Kay on 0477 674 747 to arrange a time.

THE BLIND DATE Ian was confused when he arrived at Theo’s coffee shop, surveyed the room and saw her sitting at table five in the corner. He had told the dating website that he was happy to meet with a mature lady but this was certainly not what he had in mind.

His mother Lorna had been nagging him to find a nice girl to settle down with. It was her heartfelt desire that both her boys would find a nice girl and then have many children. She had become increasingly lonely since her husband had died and was looking forward to having many grandchildren around to help fill in her days.

Ian had many female friends. Most women really liked him and felt instinctively protective of him but unfortunately, he didn’t see women in the way his mother wanted him to. It was something in his genes which he’d been aware of for years. God knows, he would never have chosen to be this way if there had been a choice; all that taunting and bullying over the years, and having to hide it from everyone, especially his mother. He knew she would never understand. Although he missed his father, it did mean one less person from which he need hide his secret.

“If only she knew how difficult my life is she wouldn’t keep on at me,” he moaned to himself, “but she will never accept the situation.

The website manager had told him that it was common practice to use a different name to avoid being hassled later on if the date did not turn out to be suitable. So the meeting at table number five in Theo’s coffee shop was arranged with ‘Meg, a sensible, mature, non-smoking lady looking for friendship.’ He thought he could take a few photos of them together to keep his mum happy.

Now, irritated, he pushed through the crowd and approached her table.

“What are you doing here?” he snapped.

“I’m here to meet an Edward Thomson for coffee,” she replied with a quizzical look. “Why are you here?”

CATHOLIC WOMEN’S LEAGUE

March has been a busy month for members of the League. The annual World Day of Prayer was held on March 6 and attended by seven members. The regional Deanery Conference was hosted by the Euroa Branch on the March 18 then members baked cakes to support the Parish School fete held two days later on Friday March 20.

Card players note Monday April 20 for the first day of the monthly crazy whist card afternoons to be held in St. Mary's Hall at 1.30 p.m. A great afternoon of fellowship and a tasty afternoon tea concludes the day.

The next meeting will be April 1 at 2.00 p.m.

This event will be held at 18 Francis Street, Tatura from Sunday March 29 to Easter Sunday April 5, and will be open daily at 10am to 1pm and 5pm to 7:30pm (groups by arrangement). This event is a walk through Easter journey, with art from a number of local community groups who have been creating artwork that reflects a part of the Easter story. The Mt Buffalo Chalet

MT BUFFALO CHALET

Parks Victoria recently offered free tours of the historic Mount Buffalo Chalet before works commenced on the planned refurbishment and I was one of many who took up this once in a lifetime offer. We were shown around many of the buildings (though some were left out of the tour due their state of disrepair) and given a lot of interesting information about its history and the future plans to update it.

The Chalet was built at Mount Buffalo after the first road to the summit was opened in 1908. The first Europeans recorded the Buffalo plateau in 1824 and the tourist potential gained impetus in the 1880s. The latter increased the government’s interest in the alpine area and, as a result, an area of the plateau was temporarily reserved as a National Park in 1898.

This area was increased in 1908 and the intention to construct a Chalet on the summit announced.

Originally intended to be built of granite, the timber Chalet was designed by the Public Works Department as a temporary building, completed in 1910 and leased to Mr J. Newton. Its popularity was immediate and in 1912 it was described as the epitome of luxury, with large sitting rooms, ample fireplaces, well ventilated bedrooms and hot and cold baths.

Improvements were made soon after construction and these included a golf links in 1911, a north wing addition in 1912 and a south wing and billiard room in 1914.

In 1919 the new lessee, Miss Hilda Samsing, lobbied the government to make improvements to such amenities as heating and lighting, while in 1921, an addition to the south wing increased bedroom and bathroom facilities. The billiard room was moved to the front of the house and the terraced garden, with rubble granite retaining walls, was laid out at the front of the chalet.

In 1924 the management of the Chalet was transferred to the Railways Department and the facility was operated in a formal manner, including

the issuing of standard railway tickets for all activities and the wearing of railway uniform by the porters. A service providing motor coach transport for guests from Porpunkah railway station to the Chalet commenced in 1925. This was maintained until the passenger train service on the Bright line was discontinued in 1952 and guests were then transported by motor coach from Wangaratta.

Further improvements were made to the Chalet in 1925, when the present dining room, the kitchen and billiard room wings were constructed and the original dining room was converted to a ballroom with a stage. The balustrade along the front of the building was removed and large windows inserted to provide uninterrupted views. In 1937 major alterations were made with the extension of the south wing and a second storey added to the central wing of the building.

At this time the provisions for 200 guests at the Chalet was noted as more than equalling the best city hotels.

During the war there was a reduction of both staff and clientele at the Chalet and servicemen and women on leave were given priority in bookings. After the war, migrants and displaced persons from Europe found the Chalet to be a comforting reminder of their homelands. The Railways Department managed the Chalet until 1985 when the government took over its running. In 1993 it was leased privately again and has continued to provide accommodation, despite the post-war development of alpine resorts by private enterprise at other locations.

The double-storey weatherboard residence is classified by the National Trust as a place of state significance and is also included in the Victorian Heritage Register for its architectural, historical and social significance.

But today the Chalet, which has been empty since 2007, remains unconnected to mains power or sewerage and had been labelled ‘old, inefficient and very expensive to run’. A huge slice of the historic Mount Buffalo Chalet will be demolished under a plan to return the once-luxurious residence to its former glory with a major facelift.

The state government wants to reopen the century old resort by 2016 as a visitor centre and cafe, in a redevelopment they hope will attract future private investors to develop the hotel. But the plan to spend more than 7.5 million dollars restoring the dilapidated and abandoned property goes hand in hand with a significant demolition. The tennis court, former staff quarters, garage and steam generator house are all on the chopping board, though the main lounge, entry lobby, drawing room and ballroom will be saved. In the future, visitors to the Chalet will have improved access, a larger car park, landscaped gardens and walking trails, as well as new viewing areas with a decked terrace on the south side of the building offering panoramic views out across the gorge.

Many of us on the tour day were commenting on how interesting it would be to visit again after the refurbishment is complete. I am sure the comparison will be remarkable.

PETER’S PONDERINGS I am very grateful for most of my life’s journey and the things that have shaped me. While there have certainly been some wrong turns, distractions and downfalls, there has been help at hand to encourage and heal so that I could get back on track. As I look back over the course of my life to this point, there are many defining moments that have propelled me into the next stage of change and development.

Can you recognise those defining moments in your life; those times when a new understanding or insight is gained and you choose or allow that to become part of your character and behaviour into the future? For me, some of these defining moments include the loving correction of my parents, the spurring on by friends to act with kindness and justice, the faithful partnering of my wife, the counsel of employers, persevering through criticism and resting in times of being laid aside.

I have noted that there are people who chase after, and somewhat orchestrate these defining moments while others pass right through

them without even realising the potential for growth that was knocking at their door. I have found myself in both positions at times but am increasingly coming to see that we need to position ourselves as keen lookouts, ever ready to see what’s going on around or in us and building character through that, even if it means an about-face from the way we have been going.

Easter presents the big defining moment if we choose to be alert. Many missed it about 2000 years ago and many continue not to give it due consideration today. Easter is the ultimate defining moment, when our creator God provided a new and living way to turn us around from sinful lives and set in place a new future for us. Jesus’ death and return to life is a most defining moment in history and it can also be in our own lives. Many people in the Christian churches of this region count Jesus’ sacrifice as their most defining moment and are keen to share it with others who are seeking the best way forward.

It’s All About Having Fun!

ARTS AND CRAFTS AT THE COMMUNITY HOUSE This class is for art students of all levels who want to hone their artistic skills. The class initially started out working with mixed media where students could learn to make artworks using different techniques, predominantly with paper collage. As some of the students had never painted before, the basics of painting were also incorporated as these are the elements of good artwork; composition, line, shape and volume, texture, colour and tone. Some of the techniques previously covered are gladwrap painting, straw painting, paper collage, using oil pastel over acrylic paint and inks.

Students can choose from a variety of subjects and work at their own pace. Lynn Hume, a contemporary mixed media artist, is on hand to assist students, utilising the vast experience she has accumulated during her thirty years of painting and exhibiting.

Lynn established the Splinter Contemporary Artists seventeen years ago and has displayed her work in all their exhibitions. She ran her own gallery in Kyabram for six years, bringing artists and their friends into the town and is presently the curator of the new Kyabram Town Hall Gallery which holds two exhibitions each month.

The course is held in four week blocks at a cost of $48 and beginners are most welcome.

Our magnificent picket fence project titled ‘Colour Our World’ is complete, can you believe it? The many pickets which have been decorated by local groups and organisations have been returned and assembled. The results are truly amazing. The colours and art work have completely transformed the outside of the Tatura Community Hub housing the Tatura Library, the Tatura Children’s Centre, Maternal and Child Health, the Tatura Toy Library, the Children’s Occasional Care and of course the Tatura Community House.

Since receiving the grant from Greater Shepparton City Council in May 2014, the project has come alive with participants, volunteers and a great amount of work and enthusiasm. We are so proud of this project and so very excited that the local community have taken part in showcasing their special groups.

We have artwork from the local primary schools, the kindergarten, the cubby house plus many groups and organisations. We would love to see this project welcomed by the members of the community and used to show off to your friends and visitors, so let’s colour their world!

A very special thank you to the volunteers who had the enormous task of assembling, as perfectly as possible, each and every picket. Their generosity and hard work has been greatly appreciated.

Our official unveiling will be April 16 at 4pm. Please help us make this a special occasion by coming along to the opening. It is open to everyone and there is no need to book so bring as many as you can with you.
