TATURA TREE BOLLARDS

Our New Orange Wall

TATURA COMMUNITY CUBBY HOUSE Another month has flown by and there have been a few changes at the Cubby House Occasional Care. We are pleased to say that the first stage of The Cubby House new look has been completed. We have painted the wall a bright orange which looks fantastic, you can’t miss us now! The next stage will go ahead in the next few weeks, so keep your eyes peeled.

The new Child Care Subsidy arrangements are due to take effect on July. The application process is still ongoing but we are confident that come the first week of Term 3, we will be up and running making our Occasional Care service even more affordable. If you are wanting to enrol your child, come down to the Community House and grab some enrolment forms or phone 5824 1315. Currently the cost is $39 for a 5-hour session. Sessions are on Wednesday and Thursdays 9am- 2pm.

We will be having an open day in term 3 for families to came and have a look and we will keep you posted on the date and time. There are a few spaces left so please came and have a look and see what we can offer. We have

the Cadbury chocolate fundraiser going at the moment and we thank all the families that have supported us. If you would like some chocolates, we have a few small bags for sale at the community house. All money raised will help us buy some new educational toys for the children.

The children have had a wonderful time making a fairy garden, making stone paths, building fairy houses, hanging butterflies, planting flowers and most of all playing in the new area. This project has taken several weeks of work, but we are all delighted with the result, especially the children, We are also developing an animal area. The children are using their imaginations, as well as developing their gross and fine motor skills making a cave and waterfall for the animals. Above all, the children are enjoying themselves and having fun.

The Cubby is located at the rear of the Community House. 12-16 Casey Street Tatura or you can enter via Kerferd Street. You can’t miss us, we are in the orange building.

Several tree protection bollards in Hogan Street Tatura will be relocated in an effort to improve parking accessibility for drivers.

The round bollards were first installed twelve months ago to replace the original metal tree guards and to stop trees being damaged by cars hitting them. Director Infrastructure/ City Engineer Phil Hoare said “The trees enhance the environment and provide shade in the summer so it’s important we maintain some protection so they continue to flourish.

In consultation with community members we have decided to move some of the bollards closer to the kerb to assist entry and exit to car parks. The alternative is to reduce the number of parks. The position of some of the bollards within the bays has made it difficult for larger cars to park so their relocation will make it a little easier to park.”

The parking bays where bollards will be moved are located between Park Street and the Railway line. Approximately 29 bollards will be relocated. “We expect works to take approximately two weeks dependant on weather,” said Mr Hoare. “This is a good outcome for the Tatura community and a good example of working with residents to get a better outcome.”

SACRED HEART SCHOOL It was an exciting week for the students at Sacred Heart School when they celebrated Catholic Education Week from May 19 to May 25. Our classes were connecting with the wider community as a way of celebrating all the exciting things that happen in Catholic Schools. Students participated in different excursions including visiting the Tatura Police Station, Sawyer’s Dance Academy, Tatura Vet Clinic, Moyola, St Vincent de Paul and the Tatura Children's Centre.

At the Tatura Children's Centre there were positive cross-age relationship skills being developed by the students, toddlers and kindergarten children. 2/3AM and 2/3VT took their quacking ducks, made in a Science sound lesson, to the Tatura Children's Centre and the children were singing, reading and playing together. The choir also visited the Tatura Children's Centre Kindergarten to sing a few tunes.

It was also the Feast of the Sacred Heart on June 8. This is a very special day for Sacred Heart School and Parish. On this Feast Day, we remember the burning love Jesus has for each of us and reflected on the unconditional, generous and compassionate love he showed, especially to the poor and the suffering. It was wonderful to have student guitarists Reagan Connors, Harry Cameron, Jonah Saddlier accompanying Ms Mathieson on guitar during Mass.

The Mini Vinnies students spent the week collecting donations from each of the classrooms for the St Vinnies Winter Appeal. The donations will be distributed to families in our local community experiencing hardship in the coming months.

SENIOR GUIDES

A fundraiser was held at The Gallery in Tatura in early May to raise money to help Senior Guides from around the district attend international camps.

Family Advisor Sergeant Bull was the guest speaker and spoke about violence in our community.

Ten guides from the district will be attending the Sydney Jamboree in September 2018 including Tatura’s Katherine Wagner.

The afternoon was organised by the Greater Shepparton and District Trefoil Guild, the adult section of Guiding. Since 2012 the fundraising group have helped Guides attend camps in the US, UK Canada, Switzerland, Singapore and New Zealand.

Special thanks go to all those who supported the day including The Gallery who provided a delicious afternoon tea.

Anyone interested in joining the Trefoil Guild can find out more by contacting Marj Earl on 5828 2430 or Leslie Walker on 5826 9604. You don’t have to have been a Guide, just interested in helping our Youth.

DRESS UP DAY AT TATURA CHILDREN’S CENTRE

At TCC we believe there is something magical about dressing up. By pretending to be a princess, a fairy, a doctor or a super hero, dressing up allows children to pretend to be whoever they want to be. While our Early Childhood rooms provide play spaces for the children to be imaginative and creative with a variety of dress up resources, we planned a dress up day to extend on the children’s interest further. As the children engaged with their peers, it encouraged them to role play which in turn encouraged them to practice their speech, turn taking and cooperation.

Throughout the day we observed endless amounts of imagination which is an important part of being a child. We look forward to many more special occasion days where children can explore their own identity, as after all, being a child is the best fun of all!

Our Mother's Day raffle was a success again this year with Judy Ogden, mother of a Tatura resident, the lucky winner. The Tatura Hospital and Parkvilla are making good use of funds raised for them, with rooms being painted and the front lounge refurbished. They still need fifteen new beds but have been helped towards their goal by the $4,500 raised from the 100 Lap Challenge and $2,000 from the Fun Run. Just a reminder that our AGM will be held at 2pm on July 26 at St. Mary's Hall in Hogan Street (opposite Sacred Heart) and everyone is welcome to attend this friendly gathering. The Guest speaker at the AGM will be Jeff Alexander from Tatura Hot Bread.

In those days, life revolved around sport and local dances and it was there that Verna met Donald Williams. Verna and Donald were married in 1947 and they lived and worked on Donald’s parents dairy farm at Lowan Vale.

Verna and Donald had seven children and Verna was kept busy looking after them all as well as many calves, orphaned lambs and chooks.

While life on the farm was hard Verna, as she always would, made the most of things and found fun away from the farm. She had a lifelong association with the CWA, and was involved with the Women’s Agricultural Bureau, the Lowan Vale Sunday School, and the Bordertown Football Club. In 1979 Verna and Don, together with Eric, Sandra and Debra, moved to Tatura and continued dairying.

After the deaths of her daughter Lorraine, husband Don and then son Phillip over the following years Verna drew strength from the courage and resilience formed in her younger years, and rebuilt a life on her own.

She had great support from her family and from the local community.

1924 - 2018

Verna always loved horse racing and nearly always had the winner of the Melbourne Cup – no doubt due to her placing a bet on most of the horses in the race! She loved travelling to visit friends and relatives in Victoria and interstate and always remained a South Australian at heart.

In 2015 Verna moved into Moyola Aged Care. She enjoyed her life there and made it as much fun as possible, always keen to have a dance, little tipple and to be involved in whatever was happening. Verna is survived by 5 children, 17 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren.

Verna was born in South Australia to Fred and Win Martlew, the second of four children. The family first lived on a farm at Sunnyside where her father worked before moving closer to Mundulla where Verna attended school. Eventually the family moved into Bordertown where Verna’s

CAN YOU PLEASE EXPLAIN THIS TO ME?

Even though it’s noisy and there are far too many people around, I still enjoy a light lunch and coffee in the food court, especially when Agnes can’t make it and I can shut off from the people around me and sit quietly with my own thoughts. Well I thought I could, until I saw a strange man waving frantically at me which completely ruined that. There I was, deep in thought thinking about the many important things in my life, which I think is something we all should do from time to time, when I realised that I could hear my name being called and there he was, waving his arms about in a most undignified manner trying to grab my attention. It took a moment to remember where I’d seen him before and then it came rushing back to me in a moment of horror. It was Fred’s friend Garry.

“Oh, how lovely,” he said as he strode quickly over to my table. “What a wonderful surprise.

I was just grabbing a couple of things from Coles and saw you sitting here all alone. Well, we can’t have that, can we, so I thought I’d keep you company and have a well-earned cup of coffee at the same time. Do you want another one love?”

“Oh, dear Lord, am I awake or am I having a terrible nightmare?” I asked myself. Before I could give myself an answer, Garry was hurrying over to the coffee shop and placing his order. He rushed backed to the table still with the same stupid grin on his face, rambling on about coffee cups and how he saw that mine was empty and therefore ordered me another one. “Surely you can squeeze in one more,” he said. “It will be ready in a minute.”

I hadn’t even spoken up to this point but merely sat there looking quizzically at him

while at the same time wondering what medication he was taking that put him in such an upbeat, energetic state.

“I can really only have one cup of coffee a day,” I eventually managed to spit out.

“Well, just have a few sips of the next one love and keep me company while I have mine. How have you been anyway?”

I noticed my mouth was gaping, so shut it.

Then I thought about how I should answer him.

Do I tell him my day was lovely until he rudely intruded, do I tell him I don’t care to spend my time keeping him company or do I tell him to stop calling me ‘love.’ I couldn’t decide which to say first although it didn’t matter because he immediately sat down opposite me and began prattling on again.

“So, I’ve just been up the street and paid a few bills, you know how it is love, then I wondered what I was going to have for tea and realised I was all out of butter. Butter, can you believe it?

How does anyone run out of butter? Anyway, I had, so I grabbed a few other things while I was getting more, then of course I saw you sitting over here all by yourself, and I hope you don’t mind me saying, but you are looking very lovely today and your hair still looks very nice from your last appointment. You are a lucky woman to keep your looks the way you have because not many women can you know.”

“Um, our coffee is ready,” I said as I pointed at the lady waving at us from the coffee counter behind him. That was it, that’s all that came out.

Garry hurriedly grabbed our coffees and continued chatting like he was the happiest man on the planet. Now, I’m not stuck for words very often, but I could not think of

a single word to say as I sat in an almost robotic trance in my chair sipping on my coffee, knowing it would keep me awake all night. Garry just prattled on and on about the most mundane and boring things and it seemed like ages passed before our coffees were finally finished. Eventually Garry finally said something that cheered me up. He said, “I’d better get going, I have an appointment in town I can’t miss. I’m re-doing my home loan, you know.”

Well, no, I did not know and what’s more I didn’t care to know. Talk about an over-sharer.

Garry jumped up from his chair came around and kissed me on the cheek, and with a huge smile on his face said, “That was just lovely, I really enjoyed chatting with you. You lead such an interesting life.”

“Chatting with me?” I thought. “Interesting life?” The whole conversation was entirely about him and his tedious life. I could have been a stuffed dummy as far as my side of the conversation went, not that Garry seemed to have noticed.

“We really should to do it again,” he continued happily. “In fact, let’s make it dinner next time. I will be in touch soon love. I’ll just grab your phone number off Fred. See ya then.”

And after giving me another peck on the cheek, he was gone. I sat frozen in my chair long after he was gone, hardly believing what had just happened. What on earth was that all about?

TATURA COMMMUNITY HOUSE NEWS A big congratulations to Tatura Rotary Club on bringing to life their 12th Annual Art Show. This is a wonderful event showcasing art from near and far and bringing visitors to our town to not only take in the art but to enjoy the wonderful hospitality and entertainment on offer. We have some art workshops coming up with talented artists Kaye Poulton, Lynne Hume and Kerry Handwerk.

The Community House certainly isn’t slowing down over the cooler months as we continue to try to respond to community wants and needs.

Thank you to all our wonderful volunteers. We have thirty volunteers at the moment helping out in reception, on the Board of Management, making coffee and in our childcare. We also thank the Men’s Shed, Rotary, Generations Op Shop, St Vinnies and Lions who continuously help us out on a range of projects. A big thank you to Transitions Tatura who donated $500 to help out with the start-up costs of the Boomerang Bags. Local businesses support us as well and thanks to Peter Kennedy who this week donated a metre of soil to top up our garden beds.

Coffee Hub: We had the launch of our Coffee Hub in May and this month held our first Barista course. The aim of the Coffee Hub is to provide a space to facilitate training for individuals, clubs and businesses. It is amazing the difference the training has made to our coffee making! Please give us a call if you would like to organise either accredited or nonaccredited training for yourself or a group. The Coffee Hub is also a great spot for our participants and visitors to hang out and relax. If you would like to sample a coffee, pop down on a Wednesday or Friday at 11am.

Keep Active Over Winter: We have added another exercise session to our program called Active Mums. Drop the kids off at school or kinder and then come along to the Wednesday session 9:15-10:15. The cost is just $5. This is a new program and we need 6-8 people to go ahead, so come by yourself or bring a friend. Keeping Active Computer Skills: Do you need to sharpen your computer skills for home or work? In this term’s program we are offering Excel and Beginners and Beyond Computers. Our 5/6 students enjoyed a memorable night performing at the Musical Showcase with Mooroopna Secondary College. They performed with the high school band and other primary schools in the area, at Westside Performing Arts Centre. This was their first musical showcase. The students have been travelling to Mooroopna Park once a week to learn their instrument and practice with the band. They are enjoying the musical program and improving greatly each week.

We had a visit from Keith from Bus Vic to talk to the children about safe travel on any bus. The children had the opportunity to have a look at the safety features in place on and around the bus, which the children found very interesting. We also received a kind donation from Bus Vic which was greatly appreciated.

We are looking forward to Gowrie Park Kinder and the Tatura Children’s Centre Kinder visits next term.

MANAGING YOUR UNUSED WATER Following the end of the 2017/18 irrigation season, many Goulburn-Murray Water (GMW) customers now have choices to make about their unused water. For those who won’t use their allocation by June 30, it’s important they know and understand options for unused water.

First, customers may sell unused water. “You can find a buyer yourself or use a water broker or solicitor to find one for you,” General Manager Customer Operations Scott Barber said. “We provide application forms and information on end-of-season water trading on our website.” Trade applications must be lodged with GMW by June 27, or June 29 if the application is made through the online trading portal. “You may have the option of keeping some or all of your unused water allocation from this irrigation season and taking it into the next season, subject to rules, where it can be used or traded as normal. This is termed carryover,” he said. “Carryover is based on the trading zone you are in and the rules that apply to that zone.” Customers wishing to carryover their unused allocation must trade it into an allocation account linked to a sufficient volume of water shares. To do this, an Application to trade water allocation form (Form 39), must be submitted to GMW by 27 June.

Finally, if you do not wish to use, sell or carryover your unused water, you can apply to relinquish your allocation. There is no charge to relinquish water. To relinquish water, applications must be lodged with GMW by June 27 by submitting an Application to relinquish allocation (Form 41), or June 29 if the application is made online via the Victorian Water Register’s My Water application.

Relinquishing water stops the automated carryover process and means customers with more allocation than entitlement will avoid an above entitlement fee.

Please note, to avoid risk of unused allocation being written off, GMW encourages irrigators to consider their options and make a decision before June 29.

NEW MEMBER FOR ROTARY TATURA The Rotary Club of Tatura proudly welcomed new member Elizabeth Mace into the fellowship of Rotary at its 16th May meeting. Along with the regular Tatura Rotary Members to welcome her, were District 9790 Governor Bernie Bott and Assistant Governor April Halliday. Present also was John Van Popering and Les Mitchell who will be representing Rotary District 9790, along with Elizabeth on a Vocational Training Team travelling to district 7090 in Canada later this month. Elizabeth’s induction into Rotary was carried out by Simon Pogue, Rotary Tatura President. In her response Elizabeth told us of how she had initially been approached about becoming a Rotarian and querying whether she was old enough. Since participating in the club she has found age not to be a barrier and is thoroughly enjoying the experience. She spoke of her work with G V Crop Protection where she gets to speak with growers and introduce them to Integrated Pest management and monitor their crop pest and disease management practices.

TOOLAMBA CWA FINDING ITS FEET The newly formed Toolamba Wrens CWA held their first general meeting on Tuesday, May 15.

Jennifer Frisardi from Greater Shepparton Lighthouse project came to explain the project’s ‘1000 conversations for change’ initiative. She explained the work that the project is currently doing and asked for members’ ideas around what the community needed to do to help children and young people thrive and engage with their local community.

Lyn Trezise filled members in with more details of the functioning of the CWA and told members about upcoming events such as the state conference in Williamstown at the end of May and the Tatura CWA exhibition in August.

The members voted to change the time of the meetings to 7p.m. during the winter months. Ideas for future meetings were discussed with a Biggest Morning Tea, learning to knit and crochet, soap-making and Christmas crafts all planned. Everyone enjoyed the chance to chat and eat the lovely supper.

Next meeting 7pm. at the Toolamba CFA rooms Tuesday, May 19. Bring a crochet hook!

An 1840s Display

A Beautifully Arranged Display

MURCHISON AND DISTRICT HISTORICAL SOCIETY In early May, twenty-nine members and friends of Murchison and District Historical Society visited Loel Thomson’s amazing Costume Collection in Bulleen. Locals may well remember Bryan and Loel Thomson who purchased ‘Noorilim’ in 1975. After 24 years of restoration to the mansion and gardens, the couple shared their picturesque property with the community in the 80s and 90s by hosting many fundraising events. They remain wonderful supporters of our Historical Society, D.P. Jones Nursing Home and other charities.

During their time at ‘Noorilim’, Loel built a spectacular museum holding a vast collection of costumes and accessories. After selling up in 1999, the Thomsons purchased an old factory in Bulleen, transforming it into a home and a costume museum which Loel recreated with items from her 10,000-piece collection.

Loel gave us an entertaining talk about the social history of costumes, including how to identify the period of garments and how to preserve them. She spoke about an intricate silk Edwardian camisole, once part of an early 1900s bride's trousseau, which was only

worn a few times as it was too valuable. In contrast, she showed a pair of huge women's cotton bloomers which were handmade around World War II or the Depression, and probably cut from an old sheet. Loel periodically changes the displays to showcase many extra costumes and accessories carefully stored away. An extensive library of books, magazines, sketches, patterns and photographs are available for Loel to research her displays.

She also provides support and resources for clothing studies students and collectors who are researching certain eras.

After her talk we were invited into the magnificent gallery with its rows of eyecatching costume displays arranged into decades, complete with period pieces of furniture, paintings, lacework, curtains and ornaments to authenticate each ‘story’.

Displays were also accompanied with relevant background information. Other display cases filled with lace, tapestries, parasols, fans, hair combs, vintage footwear, costume jewellery and shawls are intermingled with the rows of period displays.

Our group was also delighted to see Bryan’s extensive motorsports collection downstairs featuring his various racing cars, motorbikes, photographs, posters and other memorabilia.

Sadly, Loel and Bryan’s days at their Bulleen museum are now numbered, their property having been compulsorily acquired by the government to make way for a proposed freeway extension and they are searching for suitable people to take over their collection in an alternative location.

After lunch our coach took us home via the Vietnam Veterans Commemorative Walk in Seymour. We listened to a talk about the Wall which is made up of 106 DigiGlass panels with the name of the 60,267 Australian personnel and 11 tracker dogs who served in South Vietnam, together with a photographic history of the Vietnam War, two ‘Dedication’ panels and a ‘Remembrance’ panel and much more. We then took the Walk, set amongst groves of native trees and grasses resembling rubber trees and rice paddies to view the panels displaying the War’s history.

The Early Years - 1919 - 1938 The opening of the Victory Hall, as it was now known, was one of the greatest occasions Tatura had seen. It was performed on March 9, 1926 by the Governor-General, and the Guardian was exuberant: “How symbolical of Empire greatness that Lord Stonehaven should visit a remote part of the state and perform such a historical ceremony. Historical not only by reason of the fact that the name of the hall is associated with the nation’s honour and prestige, by reason of a great and lasting victory, but the fact also that it was the time a GovernorGeneral of the Commonwealth had ever put foot in this part of the Goulburn Valley.”

A ‘landing stage’ had been arranged in Watson’s paddock at Byrneside. “Here were congregated many motor cars and vehicles of all descriptions. The Governor-General’s colours, red and yellow, were everywhere prominent. A large hawk hovered majestically overhead, heralding, as it were the approach of some huge air monster. From out of the haze at 24 minutes to 5, Lord Stonehaven’s machine made its appearance. With engines throbbing and body vibrating, it circled round and then

glided gracefully to earth. It was noticed that his Excellency was suffering from a nasty boil on the back of his neck. He was received with manifestations of delight all along the route to the Shire Hall, being repeatedly compelled to bow his acknowledgement of the welcome.”

An address was read by the Shire Secretary, and the councillors then entertained their distinguished visitors with dinner at the Criterion Hotel. The architect of the Victory Hall was Mr A. Eggleston who designed it to be “one of the finest buildings in the Goulburn Valley with seating for 700 people. The street approach is between Italian Renaissance columns to the entrance portico over which is a balcony with wrought iron railings, designed for use in case of civic proclamations.”

In 1930 the stage was removed from the old Mechanics’ Hall by a working bee. Beneath the structure was a small bottle of lemonade which on being opened was found to be excellent.

The lemonade was manufactured by Mr J. Bartlett and enquiries elicited the fact that it must have been about forty years old. In the same year Mr W. Ponting, who was president of the Institute, created a miniature golf course around the east and north sides of the Victory Hall. And according to the Free Press, “the official opening was dispensed with as those present were so eager to participate in the new game.”

On the night of the opening the Tatura Orchestra, comprising of violin, piano, cornet, euphonium and drums, regaled the throng with music, and a few minutes after 8 o’clock the Governor-General was introduced from the balcony by Mr A. Crow, president of the Mechanics’ Institute. His Excellency received

NUMBER PLATE THEFT Number plate theft is one of the most common crimes reported to police. Last financial year, over 11,000 motorists across Victoria reported having their number plates stolen. It happens in Greater Shepparton and it happens in Tatura; number plates continue to be stolen from our vehicles. Number plates are being stolen from vehicles of all makes, models and ages.

The effects of number plate theft are potentially serious. Thieves use stolen plates to disguise their vehicles and commit further, more serious crimes, such as robberies and burglaries. More commonly, stolen number plates are being used to steal petrol and in Melbourne they are used in tollway theft. Motorists often do not know their number plates have been stolen until police come knocking on the door to inform them that their number plates have been used in an armed robbery, burglary or a petrol drive-off from a service station.

In addition to car parks, thieves also target cars parked in residential streets and in driveways.

Victoria Police takes the theft of number plates seriously. Thefts of number plates and the other secondary crimes are easily preventable, and they take police away from other crimes, which are not so easily prevented.

Operation SafePl8. This is a crime prevention initiative that aims to encourage the community to help local police combat this crime. Police

continue to work with Neighbourhood Watch and local businesses to actively engage and encourage all motorists to fit their vehicles with one-way security screws and protect their vehicle from this crime.

Tatura residents are asked to help police to reduce this crime by taking the opportunity to secure their number plates with these screws.

One-way anti-theft screws can be inserted using a standard screwdriver, but they require a special tool to be removed. Neighbourhood Watch Greater Shepparton, Police and Tatura Lions Club will be joining forces to run a Tatura SafePl8 day on Saturday, July 21, from 10am to 1pm in Hogan Street opposite the Tatura Police Station.

You can supply, replace and fit the security screws to your numberplates for a gold coin donation. Job Done!

Other ways to help prevent your car from becoming a target for number plate theft include parking in a locked garage, a secure car park or in a well-lit area.

Police will also be undertaking Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) operations in areas where thieves regularly drive vehicles with stolen number plates attached.

TATURA PRIMARY SCHOOL It’s all happening at Tatura Primary School!

Term Two started with the demolition of our front building- formerly known as A-Block.

The demolition crew worked hard for a solid three weeks to ensure that the building was carefully taken down and that all the materials were sorted and recycled. Plans are now complete for the new building and we will start to see some action on the vacant site soon.

We have been involved in focus groups to plan for the new secondary school in Shepparton.

I was proud of four of our senior students who shared their ideas with other primary school students in Mooroopna recently. The possibilities for our students into the future are very exciting.

It was a privilege to see our band and choir students perform at Westside earlier in the term under the guidance of their teacher, Lindy Tennant. They performed in front of a packed audience alongside students from six other local schools. The music program is a real feature of the extra- curricular activities that we offer.

We have just completed our swimming program and from all reports, the students have all gained much confidence and skill in the water. We want to thank all our parent helpers and the instructors at Aquamoves for their support of this invaluable program.

We have hosted each of the local kindergarten groups at TPS this term and followed up with an information night and open day in May. There is a lovely group of children waiting and ready to start with us in Foundation in 2019. I remind families in the community to contact the school on 58241684 to make an appointment to see me so that their child’s enrolment can be processed and arrangements can be made for their transition.

July 1 – Second Half of the Year Day. This is your chance to step back, evaluate your year so far with your goals and objectives (never mind the New Year’s resolutions which probably evaporated many months ago) and take action to get back on track if necessary. It’s a great opportunity to do some hard thinking (that’s ‘thinking’ not ‘drinking’) over your finances, your diet, your career and other aspects of your life that you might want to improve.

Remember, it’s your current energy that determines your future.

July 2 – I Forgot Day. This day encourages people to apologise and make up for all the events and occasions they might have forgotten. Acknowledge your mistake and do something nice for those whose birthdays and anniversaries you missed. According to some studies, walking through doors can create memory lapses. Psychologists believe that this is because when people walk through a door from one room to another, the transition indicates to the brain that the scene has changed and all information gathered in the previous room or scenario is no longer needed, hence the common thought, “Why did I come here?”

July 3 – International Joke Day. No, this has nothing to do with politicians. It’s strange but true that different countries have different understandings of humour. While Australians laugh at English humour, which tends to be subtle, clever and ironic, Americans have no idea what the laughing is all about and prefer a more ‘ín-your-face’, slapstick approach.

The English think that the Germans and Dutch don’t even have a sense of humour but that is because they don’t understand the very dry German jokes.

July 5 – Compliment Your mirror Day. May people suffer silently from depression or lack of self-esteem. It’s easy to focus on the negatives in our life and ignore the many positive aspects. However, complimenting our mirrors isn’t just about how we look. We can do our best to look after our health and bodies but they will always be the ones that we were dealt by our parents’ genes. If only my dad was George Clooney. Anyway, it’s about acknowledging our inner strength and our inner beauty and remembering that your best friend is looking right back at you.

July 8 – International Chocolate Day. There appears to be four or five of these days scattered throughout the year which is fair enough. So, just indulge yourself with anything composed of chocolate.

July 11 – World Population Day. The population of the world did not reach 1 billion people until 1804. It reached 2 billion in 1927, 3 billion in 1960, 4 billion in 1974, 5 billion in 1987, 6 billion in 1999 and 7 billion in 2008. It

is projected that we will reach 8 billion in 2024 and the population will continue to increase at a rate of 1.1% each year. Logic dictates that at some stage we will run out of food, water, habitable space and car parking at the MCG. Something has to give. This day is organised each year to remind us of this fact. July 12 should be Universal Depression Day. July 12 – Teddy Bear’s Picnic Day. This is simply a day for parents to encourage creativity among their children by taking them out for a whimsical picnic with their teddy bears and other stuffed toys. However, be wary of any bananas in pyjamas that you see hanging about.

July 13 – Embrace Your Inner Geek Day. Geek: a usually intelligent person who is unfashionable or socially awkward. The word geek is a slang term originally used to describe eccentric or non-mainstream people. In current use, the word typically describes an enthusiast who is obsessed with a hobby or intellectual pursuit and can speak fluently on it for hours, boring everybody in the immediate vicinity. I’m not sure how this differs from a nerd. Anyway, we all have some secret hobby or obsession, so today you have carte blanche to bore all of your friends and workmates by describing it in complete and utterly painstaking detail.

July 14 – Bastille Day. This day marks the storing of the Bastille in Paris in 1789 which triggered the French Revolution. Although it eventually became a reign of terror, the initial declaration of freedom, equality and brotherhood is still pertinent in today’s world where our governing elite still believe that some people are more equal than others and are trying to legislate to make it so.

July 15 – World Youth Skills Day. This is another United Nations initiative to generate greater awareness of the importance of technical and vocational training. The intent is to reduce unemployment among the youth across the globe. When I was young, this was phrased as, ‘Get a haircut and get a real job.’

July 17 – World Day of International Justice. Each year, people around the world use this day to host events to promote international criminal justice, especially support for the International Criminal Court.

The day usually attracts international news attention and allows groups to use the day to focus attention on particular issues such as genocide and violence against women.

July 18 – Nelson Mandela International Day. This is another United Nations Day and is in recognition of Nelson Mandela’s contribution to the culture of peace and freedom. For 67 years Nelson Mandela devoted his life to the service of humanity, as a human rights lawyer, a prisoner of

conscience, an international peacemaker and the first democratically elected president of a free South Africa. You are asked (yes, you, no don’t look around, I’m talking to you), to devote 67 minutes of your time to helping others. That’s not asking too much is it?

July 20 – Space Exploration Day. There is a connection with World Population Day. As our population continues to expand, the overflow will need to go somewhere. After we’ve built underground cities and floating cities have filled up the oceans, we will need to colonise other worlds and export our wonderful human culture to the rest of the universe. We will therefore need to continue exploring space and searching for human compatible planets.

You can celebrate this day by organising a star gazing party. Be sure to rug up.

July 22 – Pi Approximation Day. This is a fun mathematical day to celebrate Pi. Why July 22 I hear you ask? Pi, which is the ratio of any circle’s circumference to its diameter, corresponds to the fraction 22/7. Do you get it now? Pi Day has been observed in many ways, including eating a pie, throwing pies and discussing the significance of the number 22/7. Perhaps the Hot Bread shop could bake a special Pi pie to commemorate this. My son can actually recite Pi up to fifty decimal places.

No, I don’t know why either because it doesn’t actually impress the girls.

July 27 – Take Your Pants for a Walk Day. Studies have shown that walking at a medium to fast pace regularly can have tremendous mental and physical health benefits. Walking not only helps burn calories but can also boost a person's mood and can help treat depression.

It also reduces the risk of a variety of health problems including obesity, diabetes, and heart diseases. Here’s a tip for the unwary – try and wear your pants rather than just have them with you. It will avoid unnecessary court appearances.

July 28 – World Hepatitis Day. The World Health Organisation has set the goal of eliminating viral hepatitis by 2030. Viral hepatitis is caused by five distinct hepatitis viruses. Infection from these viruses results in approximately 1.45 million deaths each year. These viruses are transmitted through contaminated water and food, as well as by contact with blood or bodily fluids, through unsafe injections or transfusions.

July 30 – International Day of Friendship.

Friendship Day was originally promoted by Joyce Hall, the founder of Hallmark cards in 1930, intended to be a day when people celebrated their friendships by sending cards.

Perhaps I’m just a cynic but I sense an ulterior motive here. Besides, true friends don’t need to send a card; texts are much easier and far cheaper.

WARANGA WINTER FILM FESTIVAL

Waranga Flicks are pleased to announce the fifth annual Waranga Winter Film Festival on the last weekend in June at the Rushworth Shire Hall.

Set to be another jam-packed event, this year the festival will feature three great Australian films. Chosen for their cinema-graphic style and connection to Australian history, the films will complement the atmosphere of the stately Rushworth Shire hall and set the scene for the cabaret-themed interior make-over. Guests will be treated to personal table service by our fancy waiting staff and entertained during the interval by some talented local musicians while delicious soup, bread, home-baked cakes and hot drinks are served and our famous lolly sellers keep you topped up with jaffas and popcorn!

PHOBIAS (41-50)

If you still haven’t found a phobia yet that suits your lifestyle and personality, don’t despair as we’re just crossing the halfway mark and the big ticket items are yet to appear.

50. Koumpounophobia – The fear of buttons (from the Greek ‘koumpouno’ meaning buttons). I swear I’m not making this up and as it sounds really great, perhaps you can adopt this phobia for yourself. Scientists believe that this phobia may be evolutionary, just as the fear of all circular objects is. They believe that man has always been afraid of circular objects like holes as they resemble skin rashes or pits containing the unknown. This fear may also be related to a traumatic or negative childhood experience with doing up those pesky buttons on clothes.

49. Apiphobia – The fear of bees (from the Greek ‘api’ meaning bees). Most sufferers are also afraid of wasps and all other swarming and flying insects that sting. Many people feel apprehension at the sight of a bee as nobody wants to get stung, and I have a healthy respect for bees as I’m allergic to their stings but this isn’t the same thing as fear. For apiphobes, even the mention of bees or pictures of bees can trigger an anxiety response that is akin to that of actually being stung.

48. Gynophobia – The fear (or hatred) of women (from the Greek ‘gyno’ meaning woman). Almost all sufferers are men and this phobia often stems from unresolved conflicts with their mothers. Many phobics are unable to work with female colleagues or bosses

and tend to lash out at them or question their authority. A related phobia is Venustaphobia which is the fear of beautiful women. See, truth is stranger than fiction.

47. Somniphobia – The fear of sleep (from the Greek ‘somnus’ meaning sleep). The fear of sleep is related to the fear of the unknown and the sufferer is terrified of what might happen once they fall asleep. Death is also known as the ‘big sleep’. Somniphobes feel very vulnerable whilst sleeping and believe that death and sleeping are unsettlingly similar conditions which leave them completely out of control. The French singer, Edith Piaf, sums this up: “I fear sleep, as it is a form of death”. People with existing anxiety disorders often find it hard to fall asleep. When they do, their sleep is more likely to be plagued with nightmares. Such nightmares and sleeppanic become a vicious circle as their sleep deprivation leads to even greater anxiety of fear of falling asleep.

46. Paraskevidekatriaphobia – The fear of Friday the 13th (from the Greek paraskevi meaning Friday). Apparently, psychiatrists never diagnose patients with this phobia as they can’t actually say the word. Anyway, the main reason behind this fear is the negative associations with Friday and the number 13 in many religions and cultures. Here are a few of them. Jesus was crucified on Friday 13th; witches were believed to have gathered in groups of twelve and the 13th member was the devil himself; in England, Friday was

associated with capital punishment and there were exactly 13 steps to the gallows. Also, if you trip over a black cat on Friday the 13th when it is crossing your path causing you to fall in front of a bus, the chances are it won’t end well.

45. Podophobia – The fear of feet (from the Greek ‘podos’ meaning feet). Sufferers fear touching or looking at feet, even their own. This phobia can be detrimental to the sufferer’s well-being, as they often refuse to remove their shoes or socks preferring to keep them on even while sleeping. This can lead to fungal infections, allergies and other medical conditions. My cat suffers from podophobia but only when he’s been naughty.

44. Panophobia – The fear of everything (from the Greek ‘panto’ meaning everything).

Panophobics remain in a constant state of fear believing there is ‘persistent evil’ and ‘something terrible is about to happen’. If you’re going to suffer from a phobia then this is the one to have because no matter what goes wrong, anywhere in the world, you can say, “See, I warned you about this.”

43. Lepidopterophobia – The fear of butterflies (from the Greek ‘lepidoptera’ meaning butterflies and moths). Now bugs I can understand, but butterflies? Apparently, the colour of the wings and the constant fluttering triggers an anxiety response in the phobic’s mind. Most sufferers avoid gardens, parks and zoos where there is a chance of encountering butterflies. I wonder

July GARDENING PLAN Are you thinking about planting an established tree? This is a great time to do so. Bare-root trees can be bought from nurseries around this time and is a lot more cost effective. This is because in their dormant stage they can be removed from soil and transplanted to its new position, no pot or soil contained around the root system of the plant, hence saving some added costs by nurseries. Prepare a hole and if needed add some structure to the existing soil with compost and manure. A great advantage of planting trees now is that they have time to settle in before the hot weather arrives, less stress means a healthier growing tree.

Most deciduous fruit trees have dropped their leaves and so they can be pruned now. Just as important is to follow up with a Copper or Lime Sulphur spray to help control rot and fungus diseases. Stone fruit trees also need to be sprayed to avoid Leaf Curl at pink bud stage.

This month is a good time to think about pruning your roses. Some people may delay until next month with certain types of roses but in general, now is the right time. I get asked a lot about how to correctly prune roses so I have added this information again to help some of you out with that. When tackling roses bear the following in mind: Cuts should be no more than 5mm (¼ in) above a bud and should slope away from it, so that water does not collect on the bud. This applies to all cuts, whether removing dead wood, deadheading or annual pruning.

Cut to an outward-facing bud to encourage an open-centred shape. With roses of spreading habit prune some stems to inward-facing buds to encourage more upright growth.

Cut to the appropriate height, if a dormant bud is not visible. Cuts must be clean, so keep your secateurs sharp. For larger stems, use loppers or a pruning saw Prune dieback to healthy white pith Cut out dead and diseased stems and spindly and crossing stems. Aim for well-spaced stems that allow free air flow On established roses, cut out poorly flowering old wood and saw away old stubs that have failed to produce new shoots.

With the exception of climbing roses, prune all newly planted roses hard to encourage vigorous shoots.

Trace suckers back to the roots from which they grow and pull them away.

To avoid frost damage on your plants, gently hose them in the mornings with water. Another handy tip is to water them regularly with Seasol. Foliar applications of Seasol is one of the best tools at your disposal to prevent damage from frost. Apply to the point of runoff over all the leaves.

42. Entomophobia – The fear of bugs and insects (from the Greek ‘entomos’ meaning insects). Fear of insects usually includes a disgust response or aversion to bugs owing to their shape or colour. Bugs like flies, mosquitoes and fleas are also associated with the spread of diseases and infections. In some patients, the condition results in Delusory Parasitosis, a mental illness where the patient feels constant ‘prickling, tingling, creeping, crawling or burrowing sensations akin to insects present on the skin. In severe cases of Entomophobia, people have been known to self-mutilate or scratch intensely, leading to severe skin infections. Some display an obsessive-compulsive disorder where they may clean constantly to repel bugs.

41. Gephyrophobia – The fear of crossing bridges (from the Greek ‘gephyra’ meaning bridge). Most gephyrophobics fear bridges that run over large bodies of water or deep ravines, but for some, even the smallest bridge is too much to handle. Even seeing a bridge from afar or watching a movie involving bridges can set off an anxiety attack in the sufferer. As a result, sufferers try and avoid routes that will take then over a bridge. My son, who can be quite harsh at times, suggested that these people should simply build a bridge and get over it.

GOWRIE PARK PRESCHOOL As the middle of the year approaches, the children at Gowrie Park Preschool are certainly paving the way for success, both next year at school and beyond. They have been involved in excursions to the two local primary schools and have experienced a Foundation classroom. The bus trip was a particular highlight! These visits will continue throughout the year to make the transition to school smooth and seamless.

We have continued to be guided by the student’s interests and are now talking about flags, different countries and cultures. The children have even designed their own flags. There has also been interest shown in the Earth and planets so a space area has been established with items such as astronauts, rockets, posters and books to encourage further exploration.

During play-based learning, children have used their imaginations to create rockets from Lego and other construction materials.

We are so excited to invite all past, present and future families or businesses to get involved with our current fundraiser by purchasing a Signature Engraved paver. All pavers purchased will be used to create a beautiful pathway in our new sustainability garden. This will be offered to new families who join our pre-school each year so it will remain an ongoing project, a creation of memories and a permanent record of your support.

CWA GOULBURN VALLEY WEST GROUP The Goulburn Valley West Group of The Country Women’s Association is holding their Annual Creative Arts Exhibition on Sunday, August 26 from 10.30 am to 4.00 pm in Victory Hall in Tatura. On display will be entries from CWA ladies in our local area from the branches of Rodney, Harston, Mooroopna, Kyabram, Lancaster, Rushworth, Shepparton and Toolamba and Rushworth. Entries to see include horticulture, sewing, knitting, crocheting, art, photography, cooking, preserves and entries from our CWA Junior branch members.

G.V. TREE GROUP How lucky can we be to get this gentle soft rain following some warm days. The weeds are leaping out of the ground so we just hope the young trees keep their heads above them. Another hazard are rabbits and hares which are alive and well and always looking for that little bit of fresh growth. Keep your young trees well protected for the first few months at least.

A tree that I don’t think has been featured is the Yalata Mallee. Like all their Mallee cousins it is only of moderate size, a bit untidy in shape but the most wonderful big yellow flowers with long stamens. Use it as a specimen and you’ll have all the neighbours’ heads turning.

Although the season is far advanced it is still not too late for planting, providing we do not get too many heavy frosts. The nursery still has a good variety of plants, both large and small, so if you have lost something it can probably be replaced and with the ground damp you will be home and hosed.

TATURA SENIOR CITIZENS July should be an interesting month as we have our AGM on Wednesday July 11. All members are welcome to attend. Monday, July 2 is crazy whist afternoon from 1.00pm. Last month we had eight starters.

Before the month progresses, we have two important days to celebrate to end off June. On Thursday, June 28 we have ‘Chief’ Veronica’s birthday and on Saturday, June 30 we have Merle Krause’s birthday.

On Wednesday, July 4 we will have our first luncheon and games afternoon. Thursday, July 5 is arts and crafts morning and Friday, July 6 is maybe a BBQ lunch day.

Wednesday, July 18 and Wednesday July 25 are our regular lunch and games days. Arts and crafts is each Thursday morning at 10.00.

Don’t forget the AGM. Come along and elect your committee for the next 12 months.

Toolamba is about to lose its rail link as V/ Line says it is uneconomical for trains to stop at Toolamba. V/Line plans to cease the rail service to the township unless residents can come up with sound economic arguments for its retention. The present station was constructed in the late 1920’s but there has been a station at Toolamba since the early 1880’s. ***** Work on the new eight unit extensions to the Moyola Lodge will begin in July.

President of the Moyola Lodge Committee of Management, Mr John Lowe said the tenders are being examined now and it will be in the next few days that the tender for the $265,000 extensions to the existing 19 unit hostel will be decided. Drawings and specifications have been completed and sent to the Department of Community Services and Mr Lowe and his committee are eagerly waiting for work on the extensions to start. ***** Rodney Shire Council has commenced clearing obstructions from the Mosquito Depression which passes through the municipality. The council will spend almost $1,000,000 over the next five years to recreate the natural drainage depression. The total cost of the project is expected to be around $2,720,000 with the State Government providing the balance of funds through grants controlled by the Rural Water Commission. The regional designing engineer, Mr Peter Alexander said that the advantages of the project to local farmers will be two-fold as the water won’t stay in the depression for as long as it does at the moment and restoring water flow to the natural system will ease the flooding problem which currently exists. *****

Tatura has been entered in the 1988 Victorian Tidy Towns competition despite some early reports which showed the community was not interested in forming a Tidy Towns Committee.

Earlier in the year the Rodney shire Council decided not to enter the Bicentennial Tidy Towns program due to lack of community support. At a council meeting late in March, Cr Kevin Ryan said it would be a waste of time for the council to enter towns in the competition if the townspeople did not become involved.

Council decided not to call a public meeting to gauge support but after discussions with the Tatura Historical Society, a meeting was held and a committee formed.

Children from grades three and four at the Tatura Primary School have recently been involved in a bike safety helmet evaluation program conducted by Hartop helmet. Children were fitted with a helmet of their colour choice and asked to use it under normal circumstances for a week, both while travelling to school and during out of school hours. Prior to the children receiving their helmets, Mrs Jenny Loughhead from DECA in Shepparton visited the school and addressed the grades regarding bike safety, awareness and acceptance of the use of safety helmets.

Frank Howley has dedicated his life to teaching children how to play sport and was recently rewarded with an Order of Australia Medal in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

For the past forty years, Mr Howley has given help to budding primary aged sports people in cricket, football and athletic teams around the Tatura and Merrigum districts. Combining work and family commitments with his love of sports coaching has not been an onerous task for the shy 71-year-old. Among Mr Howley’s awards are a life membership of the Tatura Football Club, Rotary Club Tatura Citizen of the Year in 1979 and the naming of the new oval behind the Tatura Primary School and the sports complex in his name. ***** When seven-year-old Tatura Primary School student Danny Faul released a balloon as part of a school project, he didn’t give it a second thought. Little did he know that his balloon would land over 200 kilometres away. The balloon had his name and address attached and was found by a 14-year-old Prahran teenager.

What is there

What is it like?…

THE CONSCIOUS AND UNCONSCIOUS MIND Consciousness is the faculty which perceives and identifies things that exist. In his famous formulation "I think, therefore I am", French philosopher René Descartes argued that consciousness is self-evident, because you cannot logically deny your mind's existence at the same time as using your mind to do the denying.

Consciousness is defined as the state or quality of awareness, or of being aware of an external object or something within oneself. However, just because we are aware of something doesn’t mean we understand it.

This goes way beyond the fact that men are aware of women but have absolutely no understanding of them.

Philosophers have known for thousands of years that our mind represents our senses, thus the world we see and taste and touch is different to the real world which causes our senses. Animals and birds with highly developed senses of smell, sight and hearing perceive the world in a vastly different way to humans. Bats with their radar ability and some insects that can distinguish infra-red see the world very differently to other creatures on earth. Whose reality is correct? To the metaphysician, none of these are correct in absolute terms. Our conscious reality is limited by the inadequacy of our senses. We perceive it as being real but it is only our mind that perceives the information derived from our senses and then seeks to make sense of it.

There is a clip doing the rounds of YouTube at the moment called ‘Laurel or Yanny’. If you haven’t heard it yet, do yourself a favour and have a listen. Even though the exact same sound is played, 52% of people hear Laurel and 48% hear Yanny. I’m in the Yanny camp and even though I’ve focussed my mind, I cannot hear the word Laurel. This is a great example of interpreting the world through our senses and coming up with a completely different reality.

Because our understanding of reality is limited by our senses, we never see the hidden connection between things, only the effects of that connection. When we drop a rock, we see it fall to earth but we do not see the connection between the rock and the earth. Our logical mind tells us there is a connection and we call it gravity but the actual gravitational force exists far from our sensory abilities to perceive it. It is the same as our sense of colour. We see a certain frequency of light and our mind perceives it as the colour red or blue but we do not see the reality of the light waves or the various frequencies. An interesting thought is that the colour I perceive as red might be quite different from the colour red that your brain perceives and there is absolutely no way of knowing if what we see is the same colour.

The unconscious mind consists of the processes in the mind which occur automatically and are not available to introspection, and include thought processes, memories, interests, and motivations. Even though these processes exist beneath the surface of conscious awareness, psychologists believe they exert a profound impact on our behaviour. Evidence suggests that our unconscious mind is home to repressed feelings, automatic skills, subliminal perceptions, thoughts, habits, automatic reactions, and possibly complexes, hidden phobias and desires.

Thus, the unconscious mind can be seen as the source of dreams and automatic thoughts that appear without any apparent cause, the repository of forgotten memories although these may still be accessible to our conscious mind at a later time when something triggers one of them, and the location of implicit knowledge which are the things that we have learned so well that we do them without thinking.

Carl Gustav Jung, a Swiss psychiatrist, developed the concept further.

Although he agreed with Freud that the unconscious mind plays an important role in determining our personality, he proposed that the unconscious mind can be divided into two layers: the personal unconscious and the collective unconscious. The personal unconscious is a reservoir of material and information that was once conscious but has been forgotten or suppressed. The collective unconscious is the deepest level of the psyche, containing the accumulation of inherited psychic structures and archetypal experiences. Archetypes are not memories but images with universal meanings that are apparent in every culture.

The collective unconscious is therefore said to be inherited and contain material of an entire species rather than of an individual. Animals have instinctive behaviour from the moment they are born, and according to Jung, humans are no different. Every person shares the collective unconscious with the entire human species, as Jung puts it: “the whole spiritual heritage of mankind's evolution, born anew in the brain structure of every individual".

There are many things that we just know, things that have never been taught to us, and these are our instincts or ‘gut feel’, the collective unconscious. As a result of our busy, desensitised and over-regulated lifestyle, we have lost touch in many ways with these natural instincts but we can still find them if we take the time to tune into our inner-self.

Meditation is one of the best methods for listening to what the collective unconscious is trying to tell us.

Ready for Eating

FLOURLESS PEANUT BUTTER AND CHOC CHIP COOKIES Here is one of the most simple cookie recipes ever. So simple to make and yet has an interesting flavour, that is, as long as you like peanut butter.

Ingredients: 1 cup Crunchy Peanut Butter 1 cup Choc Chips (I use combination of milk and white) 1 Egg, lightly beaten 1 teaspoon Bicarbonate Soda Method: Just mix all ingredients together in one bowl.

Roll heaped teaspoonfuls of mixture into balls and place 3cm apart on trays.

Flatten slightly with palm of hand.

Bake at 190 degrees for ten minutes.

Leave on tray for another ten minutes before transferring to wire rack to cool completely.

MEMOIRS OF A BULLETIN DELIVERY MAN The May edition of the Tatura Area Bulletin almost didn’t get delivered around Tatura due to serious accidents to the two motor bike riders who usually deliver them. Ken Maude, who is in charge of the delivery operation, called me and said that due to the various broken legs and ankles of his two delivery personnel, it would be impossible to deliver the Bulletin this month. Knowing how much the wonderful townsfolk of Tatura look forward to each edition of the Bulletin and after some serious thought about whether my body could stand up to the rigours of riding a motor bike and braving the harsh elements and formidable Tatura traffic for eight hours delivering the Bulletin around town, I informed Ken that a solution was at hand as I would help him to deliver the May edition.

After the laughter faded away at his end of the phone, he asked if I was actually serious. Having ridden my faithful 750cc Yamaha ‘Midnight Special’ around the Great Ocean Road on numerous occasions in my younger days, I figured that I could easily handle a 90cc automatic puttputt around the streets of Tatura. The only hiccup in my mind was that I hadn’t ridden a bike for twelve years. If I had known about the other hiccups awaiting me I might not have been so eager. Perhaps I should have asked how the two other delivery people sustained their injuries.

Oh, the impetuousness of old age.

I scrounged back my ‘dry rider’ bike jacket from my son-in-law and was ready for anything the elements could throw at me and on Tuesday morning, when it was actually quite cold, I fronted up to the delivery office at 7.30am ready to begin stuffing Bulletins into people’s letter boxes. Unfortunately, as I soon discovered, stuffing is the correct word in many cases. With the postal service motto of rain, hail or shine running through my mind, I set off on my delivery run. One of the first things I discovered was that riding a powerful bike along the highway at 110km in top gear is quite different from riding a small bike in first gear along the footpath at 3km and I must admit there were more than a few wobbles on several occasions.

I also noticed how friendly everybody was. During the times when I needed to ride along the road at the exhilarating top speed of 43kmh, motorists were always courteous and passed me at a safe distance so that I never felt in danger. I always received a big smile from the many people who rushed out of their houses to receive the latest copy of the Bulletin.

Perhaps that’s a slight exaggeration. There were actually three people and one of them was a Chinese lady watering her garden who didn’t seem to understand why I was waving the Bulletin at her. Children on their way to school looked up from their phones long enough to recognise that the slightly wobbling rider heading in their direction might actually pose some sort of danger and gave me a wide berth, albeit with several strange, quizzical looks.

However, despite a few heart-stopping moments, I survived completely

intact, no thanks to the many strange and, at risk of alienating several of our readers, ludicrous letter boxes. First of all, my heart-felt thanks to everybody whose letter box is easily accessible from the footpath or road and who has taken the time to clean out all of the junk mail that can quickly accumulate over a few days. The people who make it difficult to deliver the Bulletin to are the ones who have decided to ignore their junk mail in the forlorn hope that it will eventually rot and be scattered by a strong breeze. As a result, there is virtually no room for a paper the size of the Bulletin and this is where the stuffing operation must occur that I mentioned earlier in this article. To make this process even more difficult, many people have decided not to have a separate receptacle for magazines and newspapers and it then becomes necessary to fold the Bulletin in half and force it into the narrow letter box slot which is already chock full with junk mail. To add further difficulty to this process, some people have decided to situate their letter box half a metre behind their fence which means you must lean as far as you can over the fence or through the narrow fence railings to force in the folded Bulletin. On many occasions this can only be done with one hand as many of the places where you need to stop are on a slight slope and you therefore need the other hand to hold the front brake to stop the bike from rolling back. There were times when I felt eligible to join the Flying Fruit Circus such were the contortions I needed to conjure up.

Finally, a special mention to those creative people who have surrounded their letter boxes with beautiful and artistic rock gardens, hedges and bushes. They might look aesthetically pleasing but there were several occasions where I had to turn my little putt-putt into a monster, hillclimbing bike just to get within arms reach of the letter box opening.

Unfortunately, and here I must apologise, there were two letter boxes that defeated me completely, and you will know who you are as I had to hurl your Bulletin as close to the letter box as I could. “Why didn’t you just get off the bike and deliver the Bulletin on foot?” I hear you ask.

Well, there are several reasons. Firstly, many of the locations were too rough and uneven to park a motor on without the danger of it falling over.

Secondly, getting on and off the bike all the time would have added hours to the delivery time. The final reason was my legs. “Your legs?” I hear you say. Yes, it was my legs. Here’s a little exercise for you to do. Sit on a stool, lift up your legs and then put them down again. Now repeat this exercise another 100 times. Are they starting to get a little sore and tired? Now do this 1,000 times. How are they feeling now? When you eventually reach 1,600 times you will understand why I mentioned my legs as the final reason why I chose not to get on and off the bike to deliver the Bulletin to those difficult to reach letter boxes.

The good news is that, barring further mishap, the usual Bulletin delivery personnel should have fully recovered from their injuries by the time the June Bulletin needs to be delivered. Here’s hoping anyway.

TATURA HOSPITAL FUN RUN The Tatura Hospital and Parkvilla Aged Care Fun Run was held on Sunday, April 29 after a great local promotion. The weather gods were smiling and a lovely autumn day welcomed 200 Entrants. The course around the back half of the Hill Top Golf Course and through Cussen Park was one of the attractions this year and feedback was that it was a wonderful course and quite serene for the participants in both the 10km and 7km runs.

The Family Friendly Walk that followed the runners was well attended and it was great to see many of our families out and about, with prams and pets all part of the large contingent who enjoyed the morning walk. It was great to see Kathy Fuller come across to have a nice walk as part of recovery from her fourth marathon of the year, only eight to go. The support from the Shepparton Runners’ Club and the local community was great to see and will be encouraged again in 2019.

Great support through prizes, vouchers and support with equipment was provided by local sponsors; Tatura’s Victoria Hotel, Hill Top Golf and Bowls Club, TatStudio Health and Fitness, Coffee+, The Fresh Cheese Company, Rocky and Lisa Niglia, Tatura Milk, Tatura Osteopath, Tatura Bakery and Lunches, Shepparton Runners Club, Game Traffic Management, Goulburn Valley Water, Goulburn Broken CMA and GV Health.

The 10.8 km run was taken out by Gerard Montgomery and the first female across the line was Glenda Sutton with Haydn Reynolds first across the line in the Junior category followed by up and comer Cadell Nicholson.

The 7.3 km run saw local John Nigro across the line first with Kate Dainton close behind taking the female category out. The Junior category winner was Sarah Wilson in an excellent run.
