It was a Friday afternoon and one of our friends gave little thought to having his power mower borrowed by a neighbour, until he happened to mention it to another neighbour. Then he discovered that this neighbour's mower had also been borrowed. Later, he was even more surprised to learn that three more mowers had been loaned to the same man. When the hoarder was pressed for an explanation he assured the men that all mowers would be returned bright and early Monday morning.

"This is one weekend," he added with a grin, "that I intend to sleep late - in peace."

HOSPITAL SUNDAY The turn-out for Hospital Sunday this year was down in numbers due to the very wet and cold day. A lot of people are not aware that hospital volunteers originally did door knocking asking for donations on Hospital Sunday but now it is used purely as a thank you for all the help they receive. Lynn Gundrill, chairperson of the Hospital Reference Group, welcomed all those present and introduced Joshua Freeman, Executive Director of Community Care for GV Health, who gave a short talk, which was well received. Jayne French, on behalf of the patients, residents and staff, gave thanks to GV Health and the Tatura Community in general for all the wonderful help and support given to them. The current efforts are to replace their beds and so far they have been able to purchase nine specialized beds at a cost of approximately $4,000 each. They are also continuing with refurbishment and painting of all rooms in Parkvilla and the hospital reception/lounge room. Although the weather made venturing outside difficult, we still noticed the extra garden maintenance that has been achieved already. Jayne also made note of staff who give up their free time on many occasions, whether to join in fundraising such as 100 Lap Challenge, the Fun Run or even to do some gardening.

As usual, there were many monetary donations, all very gratefully received; Rotary $4,000, GV Tree Group $2,000, Rodney CWA $1,200 (proceeds of their mothers' day stall) and the Italian Club $500. It should be noted that everything donated to the Tatura Hospital and Parkvilla Aged Care Facility stays in Tatura. Following the speeches everyone enjoyed an elaborate afternoon tea of hot food, sandwiches and cakes supplied by the hospital kitchen and Ladies Auxiliary. Brian Moylan was the lucky winner of the plant raffle.

Like most organizations, The Tatura Hospital and Parkvilla Aged Care Facility are always looking for volunteers. Some people bring in rugs or magazines, some sit and read, drive the bus or do gardening. If you have any time to spare, please consider offering your services to this most worthy facility. Jayne, Heidi and all the staff look after all patients and residents in a highly professional and homely manner. We are very fortunate to have such a facility in our town.

TATURA PRIMARY SCHOOL There is a lot of excitement in the air regarding the arrival of our new building at Tatura Primary School. When this report was written, we were eagerly anticipating the arrival of the large crane and several long loaders to start delivery of our new building. The building is a permanent modular design that is going to incorporate many environmental and architectural features.

The building has been designed by the school with input from our project managers, architects, builders and the Department of Education. The plans to have our Foundation classes move into the building before the end of Term 3 may be a reality as the lock-up stage of the building should only take a month or two to complete.

The learning space will have large classrooms, with the ability to create even larger spaces with amazing ‘whiteboard/glass’ dividing and openable walls. The building will incorporate a library space, canteen, staff resource and planning area, staffroom, storage, toilets for staff and children as well as a welcoming reception area close to the new Principal office area.

A noticeable improvement from the previous building is its placement. The new building is closer to Service Street to enable more teaching, learning and play space between the north and south blocks. Obviously there will be some time and resources needed to complete the landscaping and to develop our master plan for the beautiful new surroundings of our state-of-the-art learning space.

As you read this article, you may have already had the opportunity to drive past and have a look at the new building as it was due to arrive the day after I wrote this article.

We look forward to the grand opening later this year and to the chance to share our terrific school with the community.

2018 DUNGALA-KAIELA WRITING AWARDS The 2018 Dungala-Kaiela Writing Awards are open to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with a connection to our region. The Dungala-Kaiela Writing Awards were inaugurated in 2012 to provide an opportunity for writing and self-expression in the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. The 2018 Dungala-Kaiela Writing Awards are now open and written entries are invited.

There are three categories in the DungalaKaiela Writing Awards.

The Story/Yarn/Article/Play category has four sections – Junior section (8 years of age to 12 years of age), Youth section (13 years to 18 years), Open section (19 years and over) and the Elders section (65 years and over).

The Poem/Lyric/Rap category has four sections – Junior section (8 years of age to 12 years of age), Youth section (13 years to 18 years), Open section (19 years and over) and the Elders section (65 years and over).

There is also a category for Aboriginal Languages of this Region in any written form.

There are three sections - Junior section (8 years of age to 12 years of age), Youth section (13 years to 18 years) and the Open section (19 years and over). Some Aboriginal Language words must be used however the whole entry does not have to be written in Aboriginal Language. Translation is requested for all Language entries.

MOOROOPNA CWA Mooroopna members enjoyed the company of our group president and secretary when they passed on information to us from the State Conference at Williamstown. Our association members are excellent at supporting research for medical issues. This was apparent with $29,650 given to Crohns Disease research for the 2017 Thanksgiving fund.

Battens Disease has been chosen for the Fund in 2019, as we learn more about this problem, in young babies. Victoria has 317 branches with 5,000 members who diligently volunteer many hours to the aims of C.W.A. The Junior branches are gaining new members and will enjoy a supervised camp in July at Head Office to learn lifelong skills.

Branch craft days are continuing at The Purple Glaze in Tatura, while other women are sewing and cooking for coming events.

Our visit to meet our sister branch Umina Melbourne will occur at Seymour early July.

Our branch meets the last Thursday of each month for a meal at 6.30pm and meeting at 7.30pm at the Mooroopna Royal Mail Hotel.

HARSTON HALL NEWS Harston Hall Committee members recently met to plan for the upcoming Annual Reg Poole Country Music night to be held at the Harston Hall on September 15, which is a little later than usual. This year it will comprise of a mix of Country Music and Bush Poetry, creating a little more variety than previous years.

Tickets for the night will be available at Generations Opportunity Shop, Tatura on Monday, August 13, so keep this date free, as we would love to see you there.

FAMILY DAY CARE EDUCATOR WINS REGIONAL AWARD Greater Shepparton City Council Family Day Care educator Toni Serra, located in Tatura, was last week announced as a Regional Winner for the annual Excellence in Family Day Care awards with Family Day Care Australia.

Toni was nominated by her families for her outstanding work with local children and then submitted her own application detailing her philosophy and work practices highlighting her passion for working with children and supporting local families within the Tatura community.

Greater Shepparton City Council Director Community Kaye Thomson said it was very pleasing that an educator with Council achieved this level of recognition for her work.

“Toni has demonstrated professionalism in her practice as a Family Day Care Educator and has developed great relationships with the children and their families,” said Ms Thomson.

“Toni is focussed on providing quality care for the children and caters for the diversity of the children she looks after ensuring they enjoy their experience and learn new things at the same time.”

Toni is now in the running to win the title of Victorian and Tasmanian Educator of the Year which will be announced on 6 August.

If she is successful, she will be flown to the Gold Coast for the Family Day Care Australia triennial conference and gala ball where she could then be crowned National Family Day Care Educator of the Year.

The locally run organisation has been servicing our community for many years, run by our local police along with some dedicated volunteers, giving our kids a safe, fun and supervised place to “hang out” with their friends.

The disco operates four times a year at Victory Hall in Tatura, and requires volunteers to help both on the night and with the set up and organization. Throughout the year the theme of the disco changes to reflect what may be happening in our community and to engage the kids and make it more fun! We have seen everything from the AFL Grand Final, Halloween and St Patrick’s Day as themes. Our most recent disco had a Mothers Day theme where we had tables set up so kids could make a card for that special person.

Last year during the colder months we ran a movie night for something different and it was a great hit.

On average around 100 kids attend each disco but we need more volunteers to help us continue. So….if you have a few hours to spare several times a year, would love to associate with a great group of people and love seeing kids enjoying themselves…

Join Us! You need to have a Working With Children and a Police Check, and we can help you with these if you don’t already have them.

There is not a huge commitment and it is up to you how involved you want to be.

We invite you to come along to the Annual General Meeting on 14 August at 7pm at the Tatura Hotel. Even if you are considering helping but are not sure what is involved come along, ask questions and find out what you can do to ensure that the Blue Light Discos keep on going.

The Early Years - 1919 - 1938 The town’s first ‘Back To’ was held at Easter in 1923. Four hundred old residents returned for the occasion and on Easter Saturday, there was a visit by the State Governor, the Earl of Stradbroke. Tatura has enjoyed many Vice-Regal visits. Sir Arthur Stanley visited in 1914, Lord Somers opened a bazaar at the Victory Hall in 1927, and the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, who were visiting Victoria for Melbourne’s Centenary celebrations in 1934, were the first members of the Royal family to see the district. The Shire President welcomed them at the Soldiers’ Memorial where they laid a wreath and were presented to the parents of Robert Mactier and to Mr W. Foote, the oldest man in the district, who would be 102 the following Christmas Day. The National Anthem was played by the town band in the new bandstand near the memorial and the visitors them proceeded to Byrneside, Merrigum, Lancaster and Kyabram.

The ‘Back To’ event proved so popular that a repeat performance was held at Easter 1932. The organising committee offered a prize of one guinea for the best ‘Back to Tatura’ song, and from 21 entries they chose that of Mrs L. Wilcox of Harston who lyrics were to the tune of ‘My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean’. The second ‘Back To’ also drew about four hundred people back to the town and earned a profit of 400 pounds which was divided between the Mechanic’s Institute and the Fire Brigade.

According to the Guardian, “The Depression seemed to be thrown to the winds. One hundred of the visitors arrived by train on the Thursday evening and were greeted by one hundred cars, the largest number that has probably ever been parked in the station yard.” The Fire Brigade band played ‘Home Sweet Home’ and then led the crowd to the Victory Hall where Miss Rene Lockwood entertained them on the piano and the community singing was conducted by Mr J. Hill.

On the Friday, tours around Rushworth and the basin were followed by a sacred concert. On Saturday morning Cr and Mrs Hastie entertained the ladies, and in the afternoon the fifty pounds rain insurance was earned.

A gymkhana was postponed, and in its place an impromptu concert was arranged followed by the official opening of the ‘Back To’ by the Hon. John Allan. Pictures were screened on Saturday night and despite continuing rain on the Sunday, the band gave its planned recital. The trotting meeting on the Monday also went ahead despite even more rain and was followed by a dance that night. The attraction for Tuesday was a ‘Back to School’ after which everyone marched through town sing ‘Tipperary’. Bowls and croquet occupied the afternoon and another concert took place that evening. The postponed gymkhana took place on the Wednesday and an “amusing scene was enacted in front of the Criterion Hotel, depicting the opening of the Sydney Harbour Bridge incident.” * (see below).

There were more pictures at night, and finally on the Thursday evening, a farewell dance. Following the event, and for quite some time, ex-Taturaites in Melbourne met for a social get-together every two months. A third ‘Back to Tatura’ was planned for 1937 but was put off at the request of Murchison where the first such celebration was to be held at the same time. * The Sydney Harbour Bridge was officially opened in 1932 but when the NSW premier Jack Lang arrived to cut the ribbon, Captain Francis De Groot rode forward on his horse, slashed the ribbon with his sword and declared the bridge open. He was promptly arrested, the ribbon was retied and Premier Lang then gave it the official cut.

PARKVILLA’S BIGGEST AFTERNOON TEA Every year the Cancer Council of Australia encourages community groups and individuals to host a morning tea in order to stimulate fund raising to help the Cancer Council combat cancer. Parkvilla Aged Care residents prepared for the event by organising a raffle in a teapot theme, lucky number competitions and they also incorporated some small plants in cups and saucers. In addition, each year staff and residents focus on a specific type of cancer and promote awareness, symptoms, causes, effect and statistics around it. Skin cancer was the focus this year and the female residents took part in a craft activity where they designed life size swim suits which could be worn by a timber model. The men designed some very interesting sun hats. Staff, residents and community members enjoyed catching up for a chat and cuppa. An amount of around $600 was raised for the Cancer Council of Australia.

TOP SELLING BOOKS OF ALL TIME The sales figures for many books are estimates, as accurate global records have only been compiled in recent years. When you consider that a book such as Don Quixote was written almost 500 years ago, the accuracy of sales figures during these years is questionable.

Religious books have not been included in this list as sales numbers for texts such as The Bible and the Quran are impossible to verify. If one wanted to be pedantic then you could place The Bible at the top of list with sales of over several billion but comparing sales of religious texts that are usually compulsory reading for religious followers is like comparing apples to oranges when comparing these books to the works of Dickens or Rowling. It is interesting to note that J.K Rowling has seven books in this list and one can only wonder if the executives of the twelve publishing houses who rejected the original manuscript of Harry Potter kept their jobs. PRODUCING THE BULLETIN Have you ever wondered what it takes to produce the Bulletin? Well here is a brief outline of what is involved.

There is a meeting held at 7pm on the first Tuesday of each month. This meeting only takes about half an hour and brings the Committee up to date with what is going on in town and members can raise any issues they have. At this meeting our advertising ‘agents’ get the lists of advertisers they need to contact regarding advertising in the next issue.

These lists are quite short as we now contact most of our advertisers by email and have arrangements in place with them to advertise monthly and be invoiced either monthly or to pay for six months in advance. Any changes to ads usually come directly to the Bulletin office. Also at the meeting the Treasurer brings us up to date financial information, the Secretary lets us know of any correspondence and we decide what will be on the cover of the next issue.

Each month we send out reminders to our contacts in the various clubs, organisations and schools in the area to remind them of the deadline for articles. The deadline is 11am on the second Wednesday of each month.

‘Deadline Day’ as we call it is very busy with finalising articles, proof reading, finalising advertising, matching articles and photos and following up any last minute issues. On the Friday after Deadline Day two or three of us head off to lay out all the ads and articles onto sheets in the format to be printed. It is like a giant jigsaw and we are very lucky to have Melissa from Rodney Printers in charge of this. Then it is all handed over to Rodney Printers to produce the finished Bulletin.

What used to be called Folding Day is now Distribution Day and two of us head to Rodney Printers to sort the completed Bulletins into bundles to be delivered by our trusty delivery people. This sorting can take up to three hours to do and then various people take the Bulletin to Post Offices, businesses, and other pickup points around the area.

There is a lot of other work going on behind the scenes during each month. We receive articles and have to put them into the format needed, we follow up on phone and email enquiries, collect and attend to mail, do the banking, issue invoices and statements and the many other things which are needed to keep the office running smoothly.

The office is open 10am to noon each Friday, and from 9am to noon on Deadline Day. If you would like to help out with the Bulletin you can come along to the Annual Meeting on 7 August, 7pm in the Bulletin Office (the old police station), contact any of the current Committee members, or call in or leave a message at the office. If you don’t want to be on the Committee but can help out in some way, we would also like to hear from you.

HILL TOP MEMBERS JACKPOT One of the Friday night highlights at Hill Top Golf and Bowling Club is the members draw, which jackpots weekly if the winner is not in the clubhouse. Last week the jackpot had grown to $425 and many members had made it a priority to be there to take home the jackpot. The club runs many raffles as part of the weekly happy hour proceedings, with many chances to win vouchers, meat trays and a trailer load of wood. The last draw of the night is the much-anticipated members draw. The packed clubhouse of members, visitors in the caravan park and locals let out a roar when Ella Kerrins’ number appeared as the winner, and yes she was in the clubhouse. She was actually helping running the ritual, as a member of the bowling club.

Ella is a regular at Hill top and loves nothing more than meeting and making new friends at the club. She enjoys providing her own humour as ‘the barrel girl’ for the summer Saturday pennant draw and is often up at the club enjoying her knitting and chatting to many of her friends.

SACRED HEART SCHOOL Students in Year 2 and 3 at Sacred Heart School worked hard during Investigations last term to write a play script, create shadow puppets and then perform to the Year Prep and 1 students on the last day of term.

Students experimented with sound effects, light and shadows. They built a puppet theatre and spent time rehearsing. The Prep and 1 students had lots of questions to ask at the end and it was an enjoyed experience by all.

PHOBIAS (40-31)

Our list of phobias continues this month, counting down to the ten most common. I confess that I did start to develop a phobia about whether people want to continue reading about these but after one person stopped me in the street and told me how much he enjoyed reading them, I thought, “I have to continue with them because the public has spoken.”

40. Emetophobia – The fear of vomiting (from the Greek ‘emein’ meaning an act of vomiting). It is often associated with a fear of germs, obsessive compulsive disorder and other social anxiety disorders. Those of us who may have mixed too many alcoholic beverages during a night on the tiles can easily sympathise with emetophobia sufferers.

Being driven home in a friend’s car in the early hours of the morning and knowing that the irreparable destruction of the car’s immaculate leather interior is only one stomach heave away can be extremely nerve-wracking.

39. Triskaidekaphobia – The fear of the number 13 or the bad luck that follows. Many people consider it bad luck to have thirteen guests arrive for a dinner party which is based upon Judas being the thirteenth guest at the Last Supper. You’re probably looking for accidents to happen if you’re trying to squeeze 13 dinner guests around your dining room table. Many hotels do not have a thirteenth floor and some airlines do not have a thirteenth row to avoid upsetting superstitious guests.

Naturally, Friday the thirteenth is to be avoided at all costs by sufferers of this phobia.

38. Philophobia – The fear of love (from the Greek ‘filos’ meaning loving or beloved).

Such things as watching parents fight and divorce or witnessing domestic violence in one’s childhood might be responsible for this phobia. It is believed that Queen Elizabeth I might have been a philophobic. She loved and allowed several suitors to court her, but

things never came to marriage or commitment.

Historians believe that her condition might have arisen as a result of seeing her mother Anne Boleyn executed for love. The fact that her own father was responsible for the execution wouldn’t have helped.

37. Phobophobia – The fear of fear (from the Greek ‘phobos’ meaning fear). This can also be defined as the fear of phobias or the fear of developing a phobia which is very much a ‘Catch 22’ situation. In this situation the sufferer avoids the feared phobia in order to avoid the fear of it. If this sounds complicated it’s because it is. I don’t think this is what President Roosevelt had in mind when he said, “The only thing we need to fear is fear itself.”

Or perhaps he did. I’m confused.

36. Androphobia – The fear of men (from the Greek ‘andras’ meaning man). This fear may have resulted from warnings from parents about staying away from strange men. Whilst both relevant and meaningful, repeated warnings can morph into a fear of all men whether strange or not. This phobia can afflict men and women but is typically seen in younger females. Sufferers typically refuse to be left alone with a man, despite his being a close friend or relative and they might also have nightmares about men.

35. Nyctophobia – The fear of darkness (from the Greek ‘nyctus’ meaning night).

Being afraid of the dark is common for many children but most eventually grow out of it.

People who suffer from this phobia perceive frightful images of ‘what could happen’ once it becomes dark. This is related to the ‘monster under the bed’ who only exists once the lights are turned off. I remember that my brother, who was in his twenties at the time, watched the film ‘The Exorcist’ and then slept with his light on for the next month. Although I made fun of him, I was smart enough not to watch

the film myself.

34. Globophobia – The abnormal fear of balloons (from the Greek ‘globo’ meaning spherical). Now, now, this is no laughing matter. Sufferers tend to associate balloons with loud noises and who amongst us hasn’t jumped when a nearby balloon has exploded unexpectedly. These same people usually have no problem with water balloons. This reminds me of a story Ronnie Corbett told concerning his school, St Pansies. He said it was so soft that one of the children held a reign of terror with a balloon on a stick. It seems they were all globophobes.

33. Metathesiophobia – The persistent, abnormal and unwarranted fear of change (from the Greek ‘meta’ meaning change).

Sufferers constantly look back on the past and yearn for it to return. They feel they have no control over their lives owing to constant change. Many AFL coaches suffer from the fear of change, particularly those near the bottom of the ladder.

32. Gatophobia – The abnormal fear of cats (from the Spanish ‘Gato’ meaning cat).

Because cats are predators and maintain the same basic instincts as lions and tigers, some people fear that they might be attacked. Other people associate them with evil and bad luck.

Witches are known to favour cats and everyone knows it is bad luck for a black cat to cross your path, particularly if it’s a panther.

31. Theophobia – The fear of God (from the Greek ‘theo’ meaning god or deity). As opposed to an atheist, a theophobic believes in God to such an extent that he fears Him (assuming He is male) and His wrath greatly.

The Bible says that man should have a healthy fear of the Lord but theophobia takes it to the extreme.

TATURA OCCASIONAL CARE Child Care is now more affordable!

The Cubby House Occasional Care is now an approved child care subsidy provider which has made child care more affordable for most families.

There have been a lot of changes at our Occasional Care service which is open to all families and provides a great alternative to long day care. Currently we provide care on Wednesdays and Thursdays during school terms from 9am to 2pm and are licensed to care for 15 children at a time. Once enrolled and linked to Centrelink, your child or children can have a permanent booking or use the service on an occasional basis.

Families can receive up to 85% subsidy on their fees and we have seen that many of our families are receiving the maximum subsidy.

An example is ‘Julia’ who is a single mum, works part time and earns $45,000 per year. The cost of Occasional Care is $70 for 5 hours ($14 per hour). Julia is entitled to the maximum child care subsidy of 85%, so her out pocket cost is only $10.50 with the remaining $59.50 being paid by the government directly to our service.

For families with income between $66,958 and $171,958 the subsidy is on a sliding scale from 85%-50% and continues to reduce down to 20% over that income amount. There is also an activity test which determines the number of subsidised hours of care families can access. TATURA PROBUS CLUB

Thirty-four members enjoyed our May meeting and it was good to get together.

President Ev opened the meeting followed by the monthly reports. Joan Dillon spoke about our lunch outing to the RSL in Shepparton with their lovely music and a full venue. Our next lunch is at the Kyabram club on June 7 then onto the Masquerade exhibit at the Town Hall. Jean Golding organised the afternoon delights at Riverlinks. The last show was Sinatra and the next show is songs of the Fifties and Sixties Hit Parade.

We were treated to Kim O’Toole’s trip to Antarctica early this year. He left Argentina to Ushuaia where they went on an expedition around the Islands in the Antarctic. The environment was pristine as a treaty has been set up until 2048 protecting all of the islands from unauthorised tourism. Kim showed a video of his trip and it was amazing to see what a wonderful planet we live on.

We had our usual chat and cuppa with a few jokes before closing the meeting. This one raised a chuckle (life is short, smile while you still have your teeth). Good to see Merle King well again and everyone is wishing David Wilson a speedy recovery. For information regarding Probus please call Secretary Phyll Mactier.

GV ORCHID CLUB The Goulburn Valley Orchid Club held its “Autumn Festival of orchids” show at the Kialla Paceway, Shepparton on the weekend of the 26th & 27th May, 2018.

On Friday afternoon over 200 Flowering Orchids were exhibited by G.V.O.C. members for judging. Friday night they were judged by five Orchid Societies Council of Vic OSCOV judges and one local judge, Darlene Lamperd, to judge the Floral Art Section.

Champion Orchid was Cattleya: Dal’s Girl “Arcadia” exhibited by Jan Drabble.

Reserve Champion: Oncidesa (Dawn Glow x Sunstruck x enderianum) exhibited by Anna Christensen.

On the weekend over 400 visitors came through the doors to admire the beautiful and breath taking orchids. There was also the opportunity to purchase plants from local and interstate growers, and the Club also had their own accessory stall suppling pots, stakes, potting medium, and everything else one would need to pot up plants.

We had potting demonstrations, which were very popular. People were able to walk away with a wealth of knowledge, so they can grow their own orchids successfully.

The Winner The Club members are already planning the next show, which is in the “Spring Spectacular of Orchids” being held on the 16th &17th September, 2018 at the same venue, Kialla Paceway, Shepparton.

The language of texting and computers use many acronyms in order to make life easier and quicker for the writer. The word ‘acronym’ is derived from the Latin ‘acro-‘ meaning beginning and ‘onym’ meaning word or name.

It is usually a pronounceable word formed mostly (but not always) from the initial letters of a descriptive name or title. For example, ASAP = As Soon As Possible and RADAR = Radio Detecting And Ranging.

Contrary to what some of our younger folk believe, acronyms have been around for at least 2000 years and not something that has been dreamed up in the last few years. The Romans often used acronyms for inscriptions on stones.

It not only saved a lot of space and time but also prevented repetitive strain injuries from too much carving. Instead of having to write Pia Fidelis, meaning ‘pious and faithful’, the stone carver only had to put the letters PF and everyone knew what it meant. One of the most famous acronyms in history, which was carved on many Roman monuments and which adorned the Roman battle flags, was SPQR which stands for Senatus PopulesQue Romanus, or the Senate and the People of Rome.

The early Christians used the acronym ICHTHUS to identify each other. It was made up of the Greek words Iesous Christos Theo Huios Soter, meaning ‘Jesus Christ, Son of God, Saviour.’ In this case the acronym also spelt out the Greek word for ‘fish’, which is why the fish symbol is still used by some Christians today.

Two sitting Rodney councillors, Les Leaf and Geoff Youlden, were ousted at the recent council elections. Successful candidates were Kevin Walker, Tom Perry and John Grey for the Central Riding, and Andrew Crawford, Kevin Ryan and Ian Coldwell in the South Riding. They join John McKellar, Ted David and Cheryl Phillips who were elected to the North Riding unopposed. ***** Kevin Ryan was elected unopposed as the new Shire President. Cr Ryan, a Harston businessman and farmer, said the future of Rodney Shire and the Goulburn Valley relied on correct treatment of drainage and salinity, and the shire also had to continue with industrial development. Cr Ryan also referred to a youth drain, saying young people had to leave the Goulburn Valley to improve their career prospects. “We must retain the youth in our area as much as possible,” he said. Cr Ryan is involved in many district and regional organisations, a considerable number of them centred in Tatura. They include committee member of Goulburn Valley Racing Club, senior vice-president of Tatura Football Club and Goulburn Valley Football League delegate. ***** A night netball competition might not take place in Tatura this season unless new faces are prepared to come forward. Long-serving committee member Daryl Walker, said that unless new people came forward and joined the committee it would be the first time in nearly twenty years there wouldn’t be a competition. “It would be a shame if the night netball competition had to be withdrawn this season due to lack of representation. Janine has been doing a terrific job for some years and just cannot be replaced! With the newly elected team in place, there was much discussion on the

upcoming Show and Shine to be held on October 21, as well as working out where members would like to have future car runs of a weekend. The money board had all squares filled, at a cost of $3 each, so was drawn that evening with the winner, Troy Styles, presented with the $150 prize.

Most members had ordered a meal before

the meeting and the evening ended with an annual group photograph taken.

MURCHISON AND DISTRICT HISTORICAL SOCIETY Planning is well underway for our celebration weekend in September next year for the 50th Anniversary of the Murchison meteorite breaking up over the town in 1969. A children’s picture story book about the Murchison meteorite will be released during History Week this coming October as a forerunner of the special anniversary in September 2019.

We have been able to supply lots of information and photographs over the past few months for people researching family and local history topics, and for research to support three books being compiled that relate to history of the district.

TATURA COMMUNITY PLAN What’s Happening in Your Town session?

Tatura has many amazing community organisations making our community a great place to live. It’s time again to share your community organisations aspirations for Tatura through the What’s Happening in Your Town event being presented by the Tatura Community Plan Committee on Monday, July 30.

Whether you are a sport or service club, school, church or community committee, this event offers a five minute opportunity to talk about your activities and aims for the future of your organisation and Tatura. If you don’t want to talk you are welcome to set up a display or just come along and find out what’s happening in your town!

The Tatura Community Planning Committee will provide updates on current projects and outcomes from the current plan. The past twelve months have seen projects come to fruition strengthened by partnerships between organisations. This is a great opportunity to investigate possible partnerships to support your ideas for the town. Your participation will inform the priorities for the Tatura Community Plan for 2018.

The event is to be held at the Tatura Senior Citizens Centre on Monday, July 30. The evening will commence at 6.30 pm with soup and bread, speakers will start at 7.00pm and we will conclude with supper. Catering is sponsored

GOULBURN VALLEY TREE GROUP Nursery Lockout! Yes, we will soon be taking our annual holidays and the nursery gates will be closed – from August 1 to the second Tuesday in September. Our A.G.M. is over with the heads of each department retaining their jobs. Unfortunately, we lost our Treasurer to the Elysian Fields in November and many gracious tributes were made to his contribution to the Tree Group. They say none of us is indispensable but sometimes for the one stepping in without preparation or experience it is a case of being thrown to the lions. There is no sign of Ladbrookes having a bet on whether the lions will be fed.

We have decided to carry over the trees remaining at the end of this season. We have found the planting urge surfaces with spring and hopefuls are coming in the gate looking for inspiration. When thinking what to plant next season give some thought to having a sequence of plants flowering and setting seed throughout the year. After all, the birds we try to attract are looking for three good meals a day, every day, not just occasionally.

Interviews with John

Author Di Walker

INTERVIEWS WITH JOHN - DI WALKER My interview this month is with Tatura author Di Walker, whose debut novel ‘Unpacking Harper Holt’ will be launched and available at Collin’s Books, Shepparton at noon on Saturday August 11. It will be released Australia wide from September 1 in all good book shops.

John: What is your book about?

Di: The book is about a young girl named Harper Holt who moves to Melbourne with her parents. She has to navigate her way around a new city, find some new friends and settle into a new school and none of that goes smoothly. Then something happens that changes everything.

John: Where did your idea come from?

Di: That’s a good question because it wasn’t one major idea that got me thinking. It was actually a collection of little things based on ideas such as how do young people move from one school to another, how do they fit in if friendship groups in the new school are already established? I thought about that a lot and wondered how it would be for my family if we just packed up everything and moved. That’s how it started and then my idea turned into something else.

John: Who is your target audience?

Di: I wanted to a write a book for 11, 12 and 13-year-olds that was at their reading level but was a little deeper emotionally than most books available for that age group.

John: Is it suitable for both boys and girls?

Di: I’m hoping both boys and girls will want to read it even though the main character is female. She’s a strong character that should appeal to boys and the problems of transition from one school to another, as well as the other things that happened to Harper are universal.

John: Did you know your ending when you began writing your book or did it come later on?

Di: I knew the concept I wanted to write about and I developed the plot

one chapter ahead as I was writing. I didn’t actually know I was reaching the end until I was two chapters away from it. I could then see where the end was and I then wrote my way towards it.

John: That process seems to have worked well for you.

Di: Well, it’s interesting because when my editor, Nancy Conescu, got involved and we started working on it together, she suggested that I’d ended the story too early and we extended it by another three chapters which definitely made it a better ending.

John: She sounds like a good editor.

Di: Well she encouraged me to re-write the first chapter and now that I’ve written a couple more books, I’ve gone back to that first chapter each time and totally re-written it. The first chapter is where you’re feeling your way and your characters are often not fully developed in your mind.

John: So, you’ve written a couple of sequels. Are they about the same character?

Di: No, they’re different characters although the stories are directed to the same age group. I’m halfway through the fourth book at the moment.

John: How do you work out your plot?

Di: I have an idea about the big picture theme. In Unpacking Harper Holt, the theme was about transition and the subsequent bullying and friendship issues she would face at a new school. However, what evolved when I was writing chapter seven was totally unexpected but it worked well so I went in that direction, and that has happened a few times.

John: Do characters sometimes take over the plot?

Di: They do, and that really surprised me. There have been instances where I been writing about a character and wondered what’s going to happen to him or her and feeling like I couldn’t control the outcome. That was a very strange feeling.

John: I asked that question because I’ve found with my own writing that characters tend to have a life of their own, independently of me.

Di: I know, and I’d heard about that in the past and thought surely you have some control but there are occasions where it’s not like that at all and I’ve found that exciting because I don’t know what’s going to happen and I want to find out.

John: How did you find your publisher?

Di: When I finished the book, I did a bit of editing, although now I know all I was doing was spell checking, and then Googled Australian publishers who were accepting manuscripts from first time authors who didn’t have an agent and although there weren’t many of them, there were enough for me to start the process. I would follow their various requirements and send in a submission and then just wait. Although I had two rejections from publishers, I was determined to keep trying.

John: You’re not a proper author until you’ve been rejected.

Di: I know, and it’s not like they reject you by sending you a nice email explaining why your manuscript was deemed unsuitable, they simply say, “If you haven’t heard from us in three weeks we’re not interested.”

...continued John: So, you can’t even stick the rejection slip on your wall as a badge of honour.

Di: No. Anyway, Walker Books have what they call Walker Wednesday where anybody from Australia and New Zealand can submit their manuscript for the age group I was writing for. After I submitted it to them, Nancy Conescu, their Executive Commissioning Editor, contacted me and told me how much she loved my story and asked me to meet her so we could talk about it.

John: Just so everybody is clear, you’re not related to Walker Books are you?

Di (laughs): No, there is no relationship what-so-ever. It is just what I call serendipity. It was meant to be.

John: What did you learn about the editing process?

Di: I’ve learnt a lot. I’m more aware now of the words I use such as the repetitive words that I previously relied on. In the first draft there were over 400 ‘buts’ and now it’s around 170. I also learnt about perspective and making sure that it is not confusing for the reader. After I re-wrote the book in accordance with their editing suggestions I realised that getting someone else’s input can often improve your story.

John: How did you feel when you were told that your book was going to be published?

Di: I don’t think I believed it at first. Even though I know it’s real and I’ve seen the cover for the book, there’s still parts of me that still doesn’t believe it’s happening to me. It’s been very exciting but it also seems unreal.

John: It takes a great deal of discipline and perseverance to write a book.

What was your routine?

Di: I get up before six o’clock in the morning and write for an hour and try and finish a complete chapter as I can’t walk away mid-chapter. In the evening I review what I’ve written and edit it if necessary. Persistence is also important because there were days when I would walk away from my writing thinking that I’d just wasted my time.

John: It sounds quite time consuming. You would really have to love what you’re doing?

Di: I do love it. I wish I’d started earlier in my life.

John: Was this the first story you have written?

Di: I tried to write a big novel but it didn’t pan out for me. I also tried writing a couple of picture story books and they’re still just sitting around in draft form. The book about Harper Holt was different because it just completely flowed out of me once I started it. I’ve discovered that for me, it works best when I don’t overthink it or plan too far ahead.

John: Have you always enjoyed writing?

Di: I’ve always enjoyed writing letters but my inspiration has been the fact that I’ve always been an avid reader. I read all of Enid Blyton’s stories when I was a child and then progressed to Agatha Christie as I got older.

I remember when I was about fifteen I read The World According to Garp and absolutely loved it. When I finished it I shut the cover, opened it again and started once more from page one.

John: Did you ever have any moments of self-doubt?

Di: Absolutely! With this book, I stopped at around 20,000 words, printed it out and gave to a young person and asked her to read it and tell me what she thought. I just wanted to know if I should keep going as I thought perhaps the whole thing was a complete folly and I was wasting my time.

Her feedback was positive but she told me that the character seemed really lonely and that was interesting because I realised I was too absorbed in this one character. I went back and inserted a friend for Harper and that friendship took off and gave the book an added dimension. I now do this with all my books.

John: I’m sure that the students at your school were pleased for you.

Di: They were thrilled for me and I’m hoping that they will want to read it when it comes out. It’s been put in the category of 11+ age group and I wrote it deliberately so that the vocabulary would be accessible. Although there’s no inappropriate material for this age group, there are some sad circumstances surrounding loss and grief so the book would be for the more mature reader.

The Cover of Unpacking Harper Holt John: What advice would you have for other budding writers?

Di: I thought that in order to be writer you needed to live or be a certain way, and in 2016 I began to listen to podcasts about writers while I was walking my dogs. I discovered that writers work in a myriad of different ways, that there is no defined, correct way. I listened to an interview with Australian author Liane Moriarty and she mentioned that she had tried all different methods but didn’t find any that suited her and one day she decided to just start writing. So, that’s what I did and I would recommend that to anybody who is interested in writing. Just start and when the words are flowing, just keep on writing. Don’t worry about spelling or grammar because you can always go back and fix it later. For me the name of the character comes first and I just start from there.

John: That’s always been my advice as well. Just put your bum on the seat and start writing.

Di: I also had a very wise neighbour who told me to just find an hour each day to write, and I thought, “Ho, ho, it’s not that easy to find an hour,” but you can find it if you’re serious about writing and getting up early to write works for me.

John: He sounds like a very wise person. Thank you for your time, it’s been a pleasure talking to you.

Agnes and I had decided to go to the food court to grab a quick bit before heading home and while Agnes went off in search of a cup of tea and a cake, I wandered into a nearby sandwich shop. However, my frustration was slowly building as I watched the woman behind the counter search for the bread as though she had never looked for it before, then put on her silly rubber gloves, look for the butter knife and ask me for the third time what I wanted.

Honestly, her sole task is to make sandwiches in a sandwich shop so why on earth is she so disorganised? It’s not like I just dragged her out of a shoe store and said, “Pop over to this shop and make me a sandwich will you.”

This is her job, this is where she works so why do some people always look like they have no clue about what they are doing. Sometimes I swear they look like a fish out of water.

After she had rummaged around in the bread packet that was situated miles away from the sandwich making area, and why it was so far away I will never understand, she frantically looked around for something else that was nowhere near by. It felt like another five minutes of my life had passed before she finally looked up at me and said yet again, “Now what did you want on that ma’am?”

Deciding against doing jail time by strangling the woman, I rattled off what I wanted for the fourth time. She slowly put one item at a time on the bread, placing each one ever so carefully to ensure that everything was all sitting perfectly, then she looked up at me and said, “What else did you want?” I had to go through every food item yet again while she made the sandwich like it was going into an art exhibition and the presentation was of the utmost importance. Then she looked around

for the thingy bob they put on top so they can cut the sandwich in half. Of course, that was nowhere near the sandwich making area either, I mean why would it be? Finally, she clumsily picked up the sandwich and put it on a plate with several bits of her perfectly placed food falling out.

What an ordeal. It would have been so much easier if I went around behind the counter and made the jolly thing myself. It’s so simple it’s ridiculous. I felt like writing her a memo.

It would have said, have everything needed within reach, be organised, have the bread at the ready, listen to the customer and remember what they order, slap the food on the bread and have the whole thing done as quickly as possible. Get on to the next customer, quick smart. Time is important to people. This would never have happened in Tatura. Those people know how to run a business.

I was feeling decidedly grumpy as I eventually sat down with Agnes, who had not only finished her cup of tea, but already eaten most of her cake. We only had a short time to catch up today so this lengthy sandwich making process had left us with very little time to chat so I was very frustrated.

“You took forever Merle,” said Agnes. “What took you so long, couldn’t you make up your mind?”

I frowned in annoyance. “Oh, Agnes let’s not go there. The whole thing has left me completely exhausted and I have absolutely no energy left to order a coffee now.”

Agnes smiled sympathetically. “Do you want me to get you one Merle? I know how much you like your coffee, in fact Garry said you downed two when you were out to lunch with

him the other day.” She paused and gave me a serious look. “And about that, fancy not telling me you went to lunch with Garry.”

“Went to lunch with Garry?” I spluttered.

“Is that man delusional or something? He sat down, totally uninvited mind you, and proceeded to bombard me with his life story while I was quietly having my coffee here last week. I barely got a word in and he almost forced the second coffee down my throat. Why on earth would he say we were out to lunch?

How dare he? Just wait until I see him again.”

Agnes gave me a knowing look. “Oh Merle, the way Garry put it was that you two really hit it off over lunch and coffee and even planned to go out for dinner. I must admit, I was quite surprised but very excited for you.”

I glared at Agnes. “The nerve of that man. I think he is missing a few screws Agnes, which does make sense because he is Fred’s friend.”

Agnes looked puzzled for a moment while she tilted her head to one side and thought about what I’d just said but I ignored her. What I wanted to know was what Garry was going on about, spouting out nonsense all over the place.

How many other people had he told about us having lunch together? Before I know this will be all around town. I’m a respectable woman and I don’t need this sort of gossip about my private life.

“Agnes, you will need to speak to that man and tell him to keep his very large mouth shut,” I said sternly. “We did not have lunch together, nor did I agree to have dinner with him. As if I would go out with such a dreadful man.”

“Merle, I can see you are getting very upset by this, but Garry is actually very sweet. He means well, I think he is just lonely,” replied Agnes.

“And he will stay lonely if this is the way he behaves. Really, that jolly man has no idea.”

Agnes nodded. “Okay Merle, if that’s what you want. I will let Fred know and he can tell Garry that you are not at all happy about his actions. Would that make you feel better?”

“Yes it would, but if I see him first I’ll happily explain things to him in very simple words that I’m sure he’ll understand. Honestly the nerve.”

What I want to know is what makes a person read the whole situation so wrong. What on earth was he thinking? Can someone please explain? Anyone?

Bev Roberts and the team will once again create a beautiful high tea experience and that is why people come back year after year. Our first seminar features a passionate and interesting speaker who has travelled to India and knows his way around building design and how to maximise the energy efficiency of buildings. Join us for ‘Passive solar - Living with less’ with Peter Lockyer on Friday August 31 at 6:45pm.

Coffee Hub: The Community House received a cheque for $3,000 from Greater Shepparton Connected Community to assist with the development of the Coffee Hub. Bridget and Alenna, representing GSCC, presented the cheque to the Community House committee over a cup of coffee. Finally, the benches are finished in the Coffee Hub, making it a more functional and a better looking space. If you haven’t visited us for a while or are new to the area, drop by on a Friday at 11am and enjoy a coffee or hot chocolate. A big thanks particularly to Evelyn who volunteers her time to make coffee for our visitors. The Friday visitors are welcome to stick around and have chat with our regulars.

Keep Active Over Winter: We have added another exercise session to our program called Active Mums. Drop the kids off at school or kinder and then come along to the Wednesday session 9:15-10:15. The cost is just $5. This is a new program and we need 6-8 people to go ahead, so come by yourself or bring a friend. Primary Care Connect are the trainers and they also run Circuit Training on a Wednesday and Strength Training on a Friday. On the third Wednesday of the month the sessions are held off site down at Sayers Dance Academy in Hogan Street.

Also coming up this term are some new computer courses as well as literacy and numeracy sessions. Boomerang bags are also steaming ahead. Drop in on the first or third Thursday between 9:15 and 11:15 if you would like to lend a hand.

We are currently searching for an experienced casual Computer Tutor and Vocational Trainer. Must have Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.

HENRY LAWSON SHOW COMING TO TONGALA

TATURA ROTARY COMMUNITY ART SHOW

Tongala and district fans of bush poetry and history are in for a treat on Friday, August 31 with a feast of Henry Lawson verse and songs. District actors, writers and musicians will tell the dramatic, often tragic story of the poet’s life in a new show, The People’s Poet: Henry Lawson in Verse and Song.

Written specially to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Lawson’s birth last year, the show highlights more than twenty of his most-loved poems, either recited or sung. Lawson (1867-1922) was called by critics the ‘first authentic voice of the real Australia.’

Lawson railed against the oppression of the workers and the down-trodden, and the political greed and hypocrisy of the late 1800s. And he celebrated the mateship, strength and kindness that made life bearable amid the arid beauty and stark terrors of our bush and desert.

Echuca-based Ken McMullan will play the role of Henry Lawson and direct the show. Ken is a highly experienced actor and singer, having taken major roles with Tongala Little Theatre, Kyabram Theatre Company, and Echuca Musical Theatre Group. His wide directing experience includes several school musicals at Kyabram High School as well as adult productions.

Multiple-award-winning bush poet from Kyabram, Mick Coventry, will be Henry’s mate and recite many of the selected works. Mick, well known for his encouragement of poetry in local schools, has several published works to his name and a swag of top story-telling awards from leading festivals such as Port Fairy Folk Festival and The Man From Snowy River Bush Festival.

Popular Kyvalley-based performers Irene Labbett and Wallace Williams will support the show with music and vocals.

The People’s Poet: Henry Lawson in Verse and Song has been written and produced by Echuca’s Gwen Potter, a journalist, history enthusiast and long-time folk musician.

WORLD EVENTS in August August 1 – International Child Free Day. This day was set up to celebrate those people who specifically chose not to have children.

This is akin to having crocodile free day to celebrate those people who chose not to have a crocodile as a pet. Every day is child free day for those couples who chose not to have children. What about a child-free day for the many people who have to put up with their whining off-spring day after b%*#*y day. Here’s an idea. How about parents foist their ungrateful children onto these childless people for a day so that they can actually have a child-free day, then this day would make a little more sense.

August 2 – International Forgiveness Day. This is a time for personal reflection, restored relationships, and inner healing.

We need to look closer at the situations where misunderstood words and actions lead to wasted time, energy and resources on unnecessary conflict. Obviously, some people are also clearly guilty of transgressions and the choice is yours as to whether you forgive them. However, why wait for a random day on the calendar imposed by strangers? True forgiveness can only come when you take control of your own life.

August 3 – International Beer Day. This day is always held on the first Friday in August. It’s a day to celebrate with old friends and meet new friends by drinking beer together. However, the thing I don’t understand is this, why do we need a special day in order to drink beer? So, bottoms up! Salut! Prost! Slainte! Skaal! Cin cin! Oogy wawa!

August 5 – Clean Your Floors Day. This appears to be a throw-back to ancient times when we had dirt floors that were covered in rushes or plants. Once a year these rushes were thrown out and replaced with new rushes, hence no need for vacuuming or sweeping. And we thought people in the olden days did it tough.

Anyway, if you choose to just scrub your floors and sweep up the dust bunnies once a year, then apparently this is the day you do it.

August 8 – International Cat Day. I’m sure they have one of these every couple of months.

The cats are obviously doing more than hacking

up fur balls, they’re also hacking the system.

There are estimated to be 500 million cats frolicking in neighbour’s gardens all over the world and annoying their dogs. Owning a cat has been shown to improve mental health and to relieve stress, anxiety and depression although not in all cases as my cat tends to scratch on the flywire screen and meow endlessly at three o’clock in the morning demanding to be fed.

Objects have been known to have been thrown.

August 9 – International Book Lovers Day. Who doesn’t enjoy a good book? Okay, lots of people but let’s just ignore them as they are obviously philistines. If you’re intelligent, creative, imaginative, cultured and obviously a superior intellect, then you know the value of losing yourself in a good book so I need say no more on the subject.

August 11 – Middle Child Day – It’s time, in fact well-overdue by my reckoning, and I’m not biased in any way, shape or form, to give some well-deserved recognition to the long neglected middle child in the family. The birth of the first child is always a special occasion and it’s a proven scientific fact that this child is always spoilt rotten. The birth of the middle child is rather ho-hum, nothing to see here folks, we’ve done all of this before. Then of course, we have the final child, the baby of the family who is once again spoilt rotten. Is it any wonder that middle children grow up to be fiercely independent and invariably go on to become either world leaders or serial-killers.

August 12 – World Elephant Day. The goal of World Elephant Day is to create awareness of the urgent plight of African and Asian elephants.

African elephants are listed as ‘vulnerable’ and Asian elephants as ‘endangered’ on the IUCN Red List of threatened species. There is a belief that both African and Asian elephants could face extinction within twelve years. The current population estimates are about 400,000 for African elephants and 40,000 for Asian elephants, although it has been argued that these numbers are much too high.

August 13 – International Left-handers Day. Are you a left-hander? Then this is the chance to tell your family and friends how proud you are of being left-handed and also raise

awareness of the everyday issues that lefties apparently face in a world apparently designed for right-handers. Oh diddums, such trauma!

What about right-handers day I say, or even back-handers day for that matter?

August 15 – World Relaxation Day. In a world full of stress, pressure and bad news, it’s important to occasionally stop and smell the roses. Compared to every other time in history, mankind has never had it so good. So, here’s what you need to do. Make a list of all the things that you’re stressing about then circle the things that you have absolutely no control over e.g. global warming, Donald Trump, Carlton, Islamic terrorists and promise yourself to ignore these whenever they appear on the news. Then for everything else on your list that you can do something about, get off your backside and do it! You’ll find yourself far more relaxed at the end of this simple exercise. Remember, true happiness comes from solving your problems.

August 17 – Black Cat Appreciation Day. Not more cats? I tell you, they’ve taken over the world. Strangely, many people still believe the myth that black cats bring bad luck and some people even have deep-seated phobias about it (ailurophobia). However, it’s only bad luck if you happen to trip over one and fall in front of a bus or down the stairs. Animal shelters report that black cats are the least likely felines to be adopted, hence the need for Black Cat Appreciation Day. We need to start a movement like ‘Black Cats Matter’.

August 19 – World Humanitarian Day. This day is dedicated to recognising people working around the world on humanitarian causes as well as those who have lost their lives in the course of carrying out these humanitarian activities.

August 20 – World Mosquito Day. On this day in 1897, British scientist Sir Ronald Ross made the breakthrough discovery that malaria is transmitted between humans by the female anopheles mosquito. More than 100 years later, we are still working to find a cure for this deadly disease. One of the objectives of this day is to raise money to provide bed nets to help prevent children and families from getting malaria.

August 26 – Go Topless Day. This day has been organised to promote gender equality and encourages women to go topless in public, as men are able to do. I’m sure this was dreamed up in the Northern Hemisphere where it’s still nice and warm. Although I believe that we should be encouraging this type of equality, it would probably be too dangerous to celebrate the day in Australia at this time of the year as you could put somebody’s eye out. Perhaps we should leave it for summer.

August 29 – International Individual Rights Day. This is not to be confused with ‘I’m Entitled to Everything I Want Day’ which exists in the minds of many confused people.

First proposed by John Locke, our basic human rights include life, liberty, property, freedom of speech and freedom of religion. It didn’t include the freedom to live off the taxes of other people because I’m too lazy to get out of bed and get a job and would much rather watch daytime television.

August 30 – International Commercials Day. These are very irritating and invariably come at the most interesting times in a program. I remember watching test cricket many years ago when Greg Chappell was close to scoring a century. Some dull spark in the studio switched to a commercial and when we returned to the action, Greg was raising his bat and saluting the crowd. A complete anticlimax. However, commercials pay for the salaries of both television and radio personnel and without them, the only free-to-air television and radio stations would be the ABC and SBS. I think I’ve made the compelling case for commercials.

TATURA LIONS CLUB Tatura Lions Club held their changeover recently at the Beer Shed in Echuca and a great night was had by all in attendance. All reports were given by our Past President Bill Milner. The report thanked the Club and the community for their exceptional efforts in the past year. These efforts resulted in the Tatura Lions Club donating approximately $22,000 to causes that required assistance.

Some of these causes in the community were: Myola Lodge Bus Fund, Victory Hall Committee, Tatura Netball Association, Days for Girls Project, Tatura CFA, Lions

August GARDENING PLAN It’s time to finish rose pruning this month if you haven't already done so. Once pruned, give them a cleanup spray with Lime Sulphur. This will help reduce fungus and rot on stems and new emerging foliage.

Always spray in good weather conditions, and give the rose bushes a generous amount. Wear gloves while spraying and be careful not to breathe in the spray.

Just in case you missed last month’s article, I have added a refresh on how to prune roses as it should have been done by now. Always use sharp secateurs as blunt ones don’t cut, they tear the stems instead which can do more damage to the plant than wrong pruning. Always cut out dead stems. Try and open up the centre of the bush, so there's more air circulating. Look out for any water shoots. These are an olive green or even pink colour and are absolutely essential.

Take care of the water shoots because these are the young growth and this is where the rose will have its flowers. Just prune it lightly, so it will shoot out and produce more flowers. For climbing roses, train the canes to a horizontal position and you will achieve more flowers along the length of the cane rather than just on the ends. When they have flowered throughout their season cut back to one or two shoots for repeat flowering.

Do you have Citrus trees? Well now is a good time to give them a boost with Citrus fertiliser.

When it comes to giving citrus trees tender loving care there are a few basic principles and one of the most important is adequate nutrition.

Citrus trees are gross feeders which means they need to be fed in July, November and March with a good citrus and fruit tree fertiliser. Give them 125 grams for every year of the tree's age at each of the applications. But when the tree gets to about ten years old or older it needs 1 1/4 kg of fertiliser. Spread the fertiliser evenly around the drip zone, water in and the tree will power away. Even with regular fertilising the leaves might still show symptoms of iron deficiency. This is evident when the leaf veins stand out dark green and the tissue between turns a pale green, yellow or even white. To correct this and other deficiencies, add trace element mixture around the base of tree. If the fruits are sour there is a simple way to sweeten them. Sprinkle about six handfuls of sulphate of potash around the tree and then water in with two teaspoons of Epsom salts mixed into 10 litres of water. Taste-test citrus before harvesting. Some varieties colour well early in the season but it can be months before they are sweet enough to enjoy. There are a few pests that attack citrus and one of the most common is the citrus leaf miner.

A Selection of Citrus It's not life threatening, but it will reduce the yield. Look out for silvery trails in the leaf as these are made by the miner and it distorts the leaf. Spraying with a white oil preparation will soon control that. We recommend the use of Richgro Fruit and Citrus fertiliser.

What is it like?…

METAPHYSICS: PERSONAL SHADOW Psychologist Carl Jung wrote about a part of our life that he called ‘Personal Shadow’. The shadow is the disowned parts of ourselves, the parts we hide as a result of those parts not being liked by our parents, teachers, peers or society in general. These parts can be greed, jealousy, envy, anger, selfishness, being judgemental or controlling, being resentful or simply being weak. We then judge these negative parts of ourselves and repress and hide what we believe is evil, inferior or simply not acceptable. This is sometimes called the dark side of our personality.

Jung explained that we have two selves, the persona and the shadow self. Our persona is what we would like to be and how we wish to be seen by the world. The word ‘persona’ is derived from a Latin word that means ‘mask’ and represents all of the different social masks that we wear among different groups of people and situations.

We are all completely innocent when we are born but at some point during our childhood development, we learn knowledge that teaches us to separate things into good and evil. Our shadows are subsequently born and we begin to divide ourselves. We begin to sort out those traits within us that are acceptable to society and those that are unacceptable and which we therefore need to hide away.

Jung wrote, “Everyone carries a shadow and the less it is embodied in the individual’s conscious life, the blacker and denser it is.” According to Jungian analyst Aniela Jaffer, the shadow is the “sum of all personal and collective psychic elements which, because of their incompatibility with the chosen conscious attitude, are denied expression in life.” We then disown these personal traits in order to be seen as good so that others, initially our parents, will love us.

According to Jung, the shadow sometimes overwhelms a person’s actions such as when the conscious mind is shocked, confused or paralysed by indecision. He said, “A man who is possessed by his shadow is always standing in his own light, falling into his own traps and living below his own level.”

The shadow is not only the dark underside of the personality. It also consists of instincts, abilities and positive qualities that have long been buried or never been conscious. Jung called this the Golden Shadow and it refers to the positive aspects of ourselves we’ve rejected for various reasons. They may have posed a threat to an authority figure’s status, were not valued or shamed by influential people in our lives. A comment such as, “You think you’re so much better than everyone else, don’t you,” may cause a high-performing child from a low-performing family to unconsciously hide those aspects of his life in order to fit in.

The shadow may appear in dreams and visions in various forms and typically appears as a person of the same sex as that of the dreamer.

Interactions with the shadow in dreams may shed light on one’s state of mind. A conversation with an aspect of the shadow may indicate that one is concerned with conflicting desires and intentions.

However, we attract people and events that reflect our shadow. They have matching vibrations to ourselves as like-energy attracts like-energy.

This is why other people who are carrying the energies that we disown keep turning up in our lives. Repeated situations in our life tend to be a reflection of our shadow.

Just as we tend to assume that the world is as we see it, we also suppose that people are as we imagine them to be. In many cases they are not, they are projections of our shadow. Projection in this case refers to the repressed aspects of our shadow that are assigned to other people. We turn a personal trait that we regard as being inferior into a perceived moral deficiency in someone else. In other words, what we see in others is actually in our own mind. People who never strive to question whether the image they hold of themselves is accurate, go through life searching for scapegoats or people on whom to blame their problems. Often a friend or family member is chosen as the scapegoat which invariably damages the relationship and often forces an end to it. However, rather than facing up to the elements of their personality that they have for so long tried to deny, they merely look for another scapegoat, and their problems therefore, continue to persist. The unconscious shadow continues to spin the illusions that veil their world, and according to Jung, what we do not own, owns us.

Jung warned that “acknowledgement of the shadow must be a continuous process throughout one’s life and the grim process of washing one’s dirty linen in private and accepting one’s shadow is an important part of our emotional and spiritual growth.” The shadow is a moral problem that challenges our persona, for no one can become conscious of the shadow without considerable moral effort. To become conscious of it involves recognising the dark aspects of our personality as present and real.

So, how do we recognise our shadow? What we need to do is to own all parts of ourselves in order to become whole, to become the best version of ourselves. It is important to understand that good and bad are merely labels we have placed on our personal qualities. To understand what is in your shadow, notice what qualities other people bring to you which you judge or have an emotional reaction to. This will expose to you what you have placed in shadow. An example could be, I really hate greedy people or I hate aggressive people.

When owning the shadow, you need not own anger, aggression, jealousy, greed or the like, but you must own and embrace the softer version of these. i.e. assertiveness, strength, self-love, self-care and so forth. Upon self-exploration you will find that you fully own the opposite of those you dislike the most. Jung said that once you begin to romance your shadow parts and accept them all as part of you, you will realise you needed those qualities for balance and completion.

THE LUCK OF THE DRAW The death of Australian golfing legend Peter Thomson, brought to mind an intriguing story concerning a local Tatura resident Michael Trevaskis.

Michael has always had a passion for playing golf and has been a member of Hill Top Golf Club for over 35 years. In 1997 he travelled to the UK on a golfing tour which involved attending the British Open at Royal Troon, won by Justin Leonard. Other big names on the course that day were Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus. Michael played on five golf courses in Ireland, and five in Scotland including Carnoustie, Turnberry and the renowned St Andrew’s Golf Course in Scotland.

It was at St. Andrew’s that Michael had the privilege to be drawn to pair with Peter Thomson to play a round of golf, a very memorable event by anyone’s imagination! From all accounts Michael played well having 87 - 15 – 72 and was not intimidated by the successful professional golfer and five times winner of the British Open Golf Tournament but admits that being “only a dairy farmer from Dhurringile” to feeling nervous.

And if someone has hidden a secret there, how far will they go to ensure it remains buried? *Well, where do I start? I read a review in the paper about this book and it sounded so good. I do love Irish authors but, and here it comes …. it started off brilliantly, great mystery, wonderful characters and Irish dark humour then for some strange reason, it all went pear shaped. Too many things going on and darting off in all directions.

I was a tad glad to finally finish it actually.

I’ll leave it at the Tatura library if anyone would like to read it.

Peter Thomson was regarded by many as a humble man despite his many achievements. He won National Golf Championships in ten countries around the world and was the first Australian to win the British Open. His record of three consecutive wins of that championship in 1954, 1955 and 1956 still stands. He was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1979 and became an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2001 for his many contributions to golf. Peter Thomson helped design over 180 golf courses around the world. The most notable courses in Australia are the outstanding course on Hamilton Island, Queensland and The National Golf Club course at Cape Schanck in Victoria.

Despite Michael’s close encounter with this giant in the golfing world, he is quite modest about the event and passes it off as just ‘the luck of the draw’!

TATURA SENIOR CITIZENS The AGM has come and gone, with a full committee of Veronica Dowell – President, Kaye Butler – Vice-President, Wilma Liersch – Treasurer and Bob Kohlman – Secretary plus seven other committee members. Fourteen members attended the meeting which was very satisfying.

Trips to Spannerman in Boort and Hanging Rock were discussed and being looked into.

Somewhere along the line twelve blue chairs have gone astray from the clubrooms. If you know anything about these chairs could you please contact Veronica.

We are looking at having an open BBQ in the park around September so please keep an eye open for it.

TATURA BASKETBALL GRAND FINALS A Grade - Magic 29 def Heat 28: It was obvious from the start of the game that Magic had a defensive plan to shut down Heat’s top scorers Floyd Vincitorio and Dan Hall. Man-on-man defence was the game for both teams, with Heat double teaming Magic’s playmaker Josh Evans at every opportunity. Aaron Niglia quickly took advantage scoring Magic’s first four points. Magic held the lead for all of the first half, with Heat’s Harry and Charlie Murdoch putting up some timely jump shots every time Magic threatened to break away. Half time saw Magic up 21-19. The second half was a story of defensive pressure with both teams struggling to score. With five minutes left on the clock the score was 26 all. Then a two-pointer from Dan Hall gave Heat the lead. A couple of minutes later Aaron Niglia shot one from two from the line, and Magic were one point down. The final minute was frantic, with Magic having to foul to try to get possession. Magic was still one point down with four seconds on the clock, when an outside ball gave coach Daryl Wilson the chance to call a time-out and get the ball advanced, and to set up the final play. Magic got the ball to the hands of Josh Evans who drove to the ring forcing Heat to foul. The siren sounded with Evans to take 2 free throws and his team down by one point. He hit both to the delight of his Magic team mates, and the heartbreak of Heat’s players.

Top scorers for Magic were Josh Evans 19 points, Reece Mulvihill 5 points and Aaron Niglia 5 points. Heat - Harry Murdoch 8 points, Charlie Murdoch 8 points, Dan Hall 6 points.

For Magic Kade Walker was their top scorer with 6 points while Emre Coskun scored 5 points, Ryan Shelley and Patrick Forster scored 4 points each. Zaydyn Lockwood had a fantastic game being the most valuable player for the grand final taking home the Rijs medal.

C/D Grade - Heat 19 def Bulls 18: The first half between Bulls and Heat was an exciting twenty minutes of basketball with great attacking and defensive skills from both teams, finishing the first half on 12 points each.

The second half of the game saw great team-work from both teams sharing the load and putting constant pressure on each other making scoring in first seven minutes reduced to 3 goals. Any effort from both teams to bring the ball down the court was met with constant pressure causing each team to make turn overs. It was tight going into the last five minutes of the game with both teams on 17 points each. A very intense final to the season with Heat coming out with the win by 1 point. A credit to all players who took the court, and congratulations to Heat who managed to hold the 1-point lead in the final eight seconds.

ALL IN THE NAME OF LOVE I read recently that although love is universal, romance takes an astonishing array of forms around the world, including Wife-carrying World Championships, Graveside Weddings in Russia, Juliet's Balcony in Italy as well as the Love Padlocks in Italy and the Love Spoons in Wales. This got me thinking about our wedding customs. Why do we throw rice or confetti over a newly married couple, why does a bride have something old, new, borrowed and blue? My research uncovered the following information.

Engagement and wedding rings are worn on the fourth finger of the left hand because it was thought a vein in that finger led directly to the heart. Queen Victoria is credited with starting the white wedding dress trend in 1840, which came to symbolize purity, not virginity as I presumed. Before then, brides simply wore their best dress. On a similar note, brides traditionally wear veils because ancient Greeks and Romans believed they protected her from evil spirits. The tradition of a bride wearing ‘something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue’ comes from an Old English rhyme. Something old represents continuity, something new offers optimism for the future, something borrowed symbolizes borrowed happiness, something blue stands for purity, love and fidelity. As the original rhyme had a further line, ‘And silver sixpence in your shoe’, some cultures also have the bride putting a coin, given to her by her parents, into each shoe to ensure that she will never do without.

The tradition of a wedding cake comes from ancient Rome, where guests broke a loaf of bread over the bride's head for fertility's sake.

According to tradition, the groom carrying the bride across the threshold was to protect her from evil spirits lurking below. The term ‘honeymoon’ originated when ancient Norse bridal couples went into hiding after the wedding and a family member would bring them a cup of honey wine for thirty

Western traditions include toasting the couple and the origin of giving this toast began in France, when a small piece of toast was dropped into the couple's wine to ensure a healthy life, with the couple then lifting their glass to ‘a toast’. We all know about the ‘Bucks Night’ that usually involves alcohol and racy entertainment, as this is supposedly the groom's last chance to engage in debauchery before marriage. There was therefore a need for the bride's friends to organize similar ‘Hens’ parties. A bride throws her bouquet to the assembled group of all unmarried women in attendance, with folklore suggesting the person who catches it will be the next to wed and more recently an equivalent has the groom throwing the bride's garter to the assembled unmarried men, with the man who catches it supposedly being the next to wed as well.

Many different cultures have the wedding celebrations lasting over several days, some even up to a week in duration. In some countries it is also traditional for the groom’s family to give a dowry to the bride and to provide the engagement ring. In some regions of Poland, the tradition to invite the wedding guests in person is still upheld. Many young couples, accompanied by the parents, visit their family and friends to personally hand them the wedding invitations.

Less common customs such as Jumping the Broom, developed out of a West African custom. The broom held spiritual value in some cultures and symbolized sweeping away past wrongs or warding off evil spirits.

The brooms were waved over the heads of marrying couples with them often jumping over the broom at the end of the ceremony.

Handfasting which is practiced in many cultures around the world and favoured by practitioners of Celtic-based religions and spiritual traditions is a wedding ritual in which the bride's and groom's hands are tied together to demonstrate their commitment to each other and their new bond. It is said to be based on an ancient Celtic tradition and to have inspired the phrase ‘tying the knot’.

The tradition of a father accompanying the bride down the aisle symbolizes that he endorses her choice of husband and is presenting his daughter as a pure bride to that man. Some have a groom and bride enter the church together and walk up to the altar. It is a custom in Sweden that instead of guests bringing gifts for the bride and groom, they pay for the dinner and drinks in order to help cover the cost of the wedding and for the couple to be placed at the head of a U-shaped table instead of a separate head table for the bridal party. A Finnish bride traditionally went door to door collecting gifts in a pillowcase, accompanied by an older married man who represented long marriage. Moroccan women take a milk bath to purify themselves before their wedding ceremony. In Holland, a pine tree is planted outside the newlywed's home as a symbol of fertility and luck.

supposed good luck. According to Greek culture, tucking a sugar cube into your glove will sweeten your union. Some believe a spider found in a wedding dress means good luck. Yikes! In English tradition, Wednesday is considered the best day to marry, although Monday is for wealth and Tuesday for health.

Saturday is supposedly the unluckiest wedding day, even though it's the most popular day of the week to marry. Rain on your wedding day is actually considered good luck, according to Hindu tradition and for good luck Egyptian women pinch the bride on her wedding day.

Ouch! Middle Eastern brides paint henna on their hands and feet to protect themselves from the evil eye and peas are thrown at Czech newlyweds instead of rice. Another tradition for offering fortune to the couple is for the bride's friends to write their names on the inner part of the bride's dress. This is also said to help the bride's unmarried friends to find a husband.

Wearing of wedding rings dates back to ancient Egypt. The round shape of a ring symbolizes eternal love. Diamonds set in gold or silver became popular as betrothal rings among wealthy Venetians toward the end of the fifteenth century. In the symbolic language of jewels, a sapphire in a wedding ring means marital happiness but a pearl engagement ring is said to be bad luck because its shape echoes that of a tear. One of history's earliest engagement rings was given to Princess Mary, daughter of Henry VIII, when she was only two years old. Snake rings dotted with ruby eyes were popular wedding bands in Victorian England, with coils winding into a circle symbolizing eternity.

The bride stands to the groom's left during a Christian ceremony because in bygone days the groom needed his right hand free to fight off other suitors. The Catholic tradition of posting the banns to announce a marriage originated as a way to ensure the bride and groom were not related. Nowadays, the bride carries a beautiful bouquet of flowers but the purpose of the bouquet held different meanings in the past. Some brides carried orange blossoms for fertility, others carried a combination of herbs and flowers to ward off evil spirits with their aroma. Bouquets of dill were often carried, again for fertility reasons and after the ceremony, the dill was eaten to encourage lust. The traditional wedding cake evolved from Roman times when the cake was originally made from wheat. It was broken over the bride's head to ensure fertility and all of the guests ate a piece for good luck. Single women used to place a piece of wedding cake under their pillows in the hopes of finding their own husbands. In older times, a kiss symbolized a legal bond.

Therefore, the bride and groom kissed to seal the deal on their betrothal.

Many of these traditions are still practiced today and there are new traditions being formed by the young people today that will be carried on in families of the future.
