Rod Mauger

A NEW VENTURE FOR ROD MAUGER For Rod Mauger, engineering is much more than a career, it’s a way of life. As an Asset Investigation Engineer with Goulburn-Murray Water (GMW), Rod has amassed an impressive knowledge base during his 35 years in the water industry. Most recently he’s worked in the Customer Infrastructure and Assets team, and on any given day Rod might be consulting with mechanical and electrical trade staff and engineers, project managers and maintenance and operations staff.

“I’ve been aware of the importance of water all my life. I wanted to live in the country and working with water is certainly a fulfilling job,” he said. “Most predominantly my time has been spent working with dams, the maintenance of them and replacement projects.”

This means forward planning for capital works, and developing business cases for asset renewal and replacement.

Oddly enough, his career didn’t start in water, it started with chocolate and lollies. After graduating from Swinburne University in 1978, Rod’s first job was working for Cadbury Schweppes Pty Ltd at their Ringwood plant.

“I was a mechanical engineer trainee helping out with the design of production equipment. As you can imagine, there is a large need for mechanical engineering in the food production industry, with many heating and cooling appliances and other machines,” he said.

While undoubtedly fascinating, Rod soon realised his heart wasn’t in it. It was a role with the State Rivers and Water Supply Commission, based in Red Cliffs, near Mildura two years later that sparked his interest. He thinks a family link to the water industry may also have played a part. “I didn’t know it at the time but my uncle Bruce Willersdorf used to be the well-known manager of the Headworks Division (now known as Dams) for the State Rivers and Water Supply Commission.

We used to visit Uncle Bruce at various dam sites when I was a kid, so perhaps that’s where some of my interest in the water industry stemmed from.”

The Early Years - Politics and Royalty In June 1898, a referendum was held concerning the federation of the Australian colonies. Tatura voted yes 120 and no 38, while the Shire of Rodney’s vote was yes 1744, no 489. The Boer War was fought and won, and at a public meeting in Tatura under the auspices of the W.C.T.U. “Miss George delivered an address on intemperance. She stated that the Boer War had cost the British Empire no less than 180,000 pounds and nearly 22,000 precious lives; but strong drink had cost the empire 500,000,000 pounds and 320,000 lives in the same time.”

Queen Victoria died and so did Edward VII. All Tatura schools closed, flags flew at half-mast and a number of businessmen at once put up their shutters. The Methodist pulpit was draped with a British flag and an appropriate sermon was delivered by Professor Christopher Mudd who had been botanist to the late king when he was Prince of Wales.

On the day of King George V’s coronation celebrations at Tatura were, according to The Guardian, “maintained with the greatest enthusiasm. Flags were flying from every available flagpole, children wore their coronation emblems and the grown-ups were

Punctually at 11 o’clock the first portion of the coronation celebrations was commenced. It was a united church service in the Mechanics’ Hall, the order for which had been arranged by the three protestant clergymen. Long before the hour of commencement, people began to assemble at the hall and when the first hymn was announced, every available seat was occupied. Fully 200 adults arrived later, for which additional seating accommodation had to be provided.

A combined choir under the leadership of Percy Lamb sang ‘Praise the Lord, O Jerusalem’ while Mr A. Bowie presided at the organ whilst Mr Mundy assisted on the piccolo. There followed a procession of children headed by the Tatura Brass Band, Fire Brigade and Australia Light Horse, then a picnic lunch and afternoon tea for 1500 people, sports and two football matches, town versus country and Fire Brigade versus A.L.H. At night, there was a fireworks display from a platform in the railway reserve, and celebrations concluded with a dance in the new Fire Brigade Hall. What a day!”

The Rodney Council had earlier voted five

pounds to each Riding for the coronation celebrations. The King’s representatives visited Tatura and the Shire three times during this period.

In May 1904, the Council was offended at not being asked for official representation when the Governor, Lord Northcote, inspected the Rodney irrigation Trust, but the visit was a private one, including only fifteen minutes at Tatura where arrangements had been made by the Commissioners for a glass of wine in the boardroom of the Rodney Trust.

In February 1910, Sir Thomas Gibson Carmichael, Governor of Victoria, visited the experimental farm and several orchards at Ardmona, lunching at the Criterion Hotel in Tatura. His successor, Sir Joh Fuller, visited the Shire in August 1911, when his itinerary included the hospital and state school in Mooroopna and the school at Ardmona. He was welcomed at the Shire Hall, Tatura, then at the state school, Catholic school and Deaconess High School, before lunching at the Victoria Hotel.

MISS PEREGINE’S HOME FOR PECULIAR CHILDREN Ransom Riggs A mysterious island, an abandoned orphanage and a strange collection of peculiar photographs. It all waits to be discovered in this book. As our story opens, an horrific family tragedy sets sixteen-year-old Jacob journeying to a remote island off the coast of Wales, where he discovers the ruins of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children.

As Jacob explores its decaying bedrooms and hallways, it becomes clear that Miss Peregrine’s children were more than just peculiar. *I must admit, I bought this book because the title intrigued me. It certainly is very different. It has very strange photos throughout the book that tend to give you the creepy crawlies. I really enjoyed it and I was pleased to see that it’s the first of a trilogy. Looks like I’m in for some late nights.

I would like to take time to thank the many volunteers who support the Tatura Community House, without this help the house could not function. Roles include reception, IT support, program volunteers, gardening and childcare.

We also have a dedicated Committee of Management who meet monthly and oversee the governance, strategic and financial aspects of the business. The AGM is in September and I invite any interested persons to drop in or make a time to speak to one of our current board members and consider joining us at this very exciting time as we seek to grow and diversify.

The community house welcomes Tom Boocock (bald guy with glasses) to the team.

Many around town may have met Tom as part of the Helping Hand Seniors Technology program and now he has joined us to run some IT courses, including the Beginners and Beyond Computer course and iPads.

Tom is also available for one on one help at an hourly rate. Tom brings with him a solid background in marketing and will be available to community groups and commercial entities to help build their digital and print marketing.

CAN YOU PLEASE EXPLAIN THIS TO ME?

“Look at that lovely little girl over there, Merle,” Agnes said cheerfully.

“Lovely? I sincerely doubt that Agnes. I’m yet to meet a lovely child,” I muttered as I gazed in the direction Agnes was vaguely indicating.

Agnes laughed, “Oh Merle, you’re being a little tough don’t you think?”

“Hmph,” I said. “Let me tell you about the little girls I saw yesterday. Here I was lined up to get my lunch in our local food store, and standing in front of me was a lady with two little girls, twins by the look of them. I figured they were only around three and a half years old. Well as usual, acting like misbehaving children do, they were carrying on a treat. “I want this, and I want that”, with some jumping up and down theatrics to go with it. They were whingeing and crying and all the usual business. I was disgusted. My boys never behaved like that when they were little.”

“I’m sure they didn’t Merle,” replied Agnes.

“Anyway, after a brief pause, they started yelling out, “I want, I want!” with flaying arms and stooped over bodies. I thought they’d be rolling on the floor before long, kicking their legs in the air. And the mother, can you believe it, says to them, “Now be good girls and I will buy you some lollies.” Now clearly, they were not being good girls at all, and clearly, they should not have been given lollies. I mean what sort of message is she giving them? This went on several times with the girls jumping up and down and flopping their bodies about like they were about to miss out on Christmas, and over and over the mother just kept reaffirming that if they were good girls they would get some lollies. I could not stand it a minute longer. I tapped her on the shoulder and I said, “They are not good

girls, why are you buying them lollies? You are only rewarding bad behaviour! What do you think they will do next time they want to get lollies?” Well I will tell you. They will misbehave again and again, because that is what you are teaching them. Be naughty and I will reward you with lollies.”

Agnes looked shocked. “Oh Merle, what did she say to you?”

I must admit, that thought cheered me up for a bit but then reality set in once again.

What’s happened to being responsible for your own behaviour, respecting each other and displaying good manners. When did we decide that these things didn’t matter anymore? Can someone please explain? Anyone?

2017 VICTORIAN CWA CONFERENCE

Many local CWA members were kept busy last week attending the CWA State Conference at Westside and Eastbank. The program began on Wednesday with a day of performing arts at Westside, Mooroopna.

Members travelled from across the state to perform as part of choirs, drama items, choral speaking, individual singing, and public speaking competitions. The day was very entertaining and was well-received by the packed audience.

Thursday afternoon began with an Ecumenical Church Service at Eastbank with songs led by the State Choir. It was followed in the evening by the Annual General Meeting.

Guest speaker during the proceedings was Mrs Ruth Shanks AM, current world President of ACWW (Associated Country Women of the World). After all official procedures, the evening closed with the State Choir singing ‘Friends on our Left and Friends on our Right’.

Friday and Saturday’s conference featured guest speakers from organisations aligned with CWA projects. They included the National Stroke Foundation which received $25,248.00 from Victorian CWA’s Thanksgiving Fund for 2016. The CEO of Crohn’s and Colitis Australia (Inflammatory Bowel Disorders) reported that IBD is more prevalent than many diseases but receives very little funding. This organisation will be the recipient Victoria’s CWA Thanksgiving Fund for 2017.

Sensis spoke about their partnership with CWA to present CWA members on the front page of their Yellow and White Pages phone books publication. Another interesting speaker was Jan Berriman the CEO of YWCA, who spoke about their project in providing affordable housing for homeless women, many of whom are in the 35-60 year age group.

Lisa Dwyer, recent board member of Murray Goulburn Dairy Co-operative, gave on outline of her journey and aspirations. A very entertaining and informative presentation was also made by Scott Chapman, CEO of Royal Flying Doctors Victoria. His presentation was preceded by the State Choir performing a choral – speaking visual representation of a jingle advertising the RFDS. Seemingly critically injured choir members were bandaged according to need and suitably treated by the RFDS crew.

This was a light-hearted introduction to a very important subject. He explained that Victorians were major players in getting John Flynn’s vision started, to provide a ‘Mantle across the Outback’. Nowadays the main focus of RFDS Victoria is to raise funds for the RFDS, provide health care through 93 Ambulances, mainly used as transport vehicles

A total of 29 starters took place in the Tatura Chamber of Commerce sponsored Goulburn car rally. The drivers left the Tatura racecourse after an afternoon of gymkhana display work around 6pm. They then journeyed out to the Whroo Forest in Rushworth where they clocked up a total of 190 kilometres. The first driver returned to the racecourse at 10.15pm and all drivers were accounted for by 11.00pm. Chamber of Commerce publicity spokesperson, Liz Taylor, said all Chamber members were delighted with the rally, and with the way it was run. ***** Merrigum township will have its own community caravan despite the poor response to a similar facility in Tatura. Rodney Shire Council heard at its recent meeting that the Merrigum Lions Ladies Club wanted to buy Merrigum’s own caravan after investigations by the club showed there was a demand for the facility. Council heard at its meeting last week, an error by the Department of Community Services meant the Tatura Care and Share occasional care program would not receive a promised $933 government funding increase. The committee of young parents told the council it was granted the increase in October last year and had budgeted the twelve months operation on that increase. Council heard if the new level of funding was not maintained there would be no alternative for the committee but to cease the much needed service. Merrigum Riding councillor, Kevin Ryan, said he was outraged at the department’s actions and wanted to know the reason for the error. ***** A great second half fight back by Tatura enable the struggling Bulldogs to gain a convincing win over an improved Rochester team. Crime PREVENTION With Glenn Gibson, Crime Prevention Officer DECEPTIONS AND CREDIT CARD FRAUD Deceptions are an increasing community concern. In Greater Shepparton during 2016 our community reported 428 deceptions to police. This is an increase of 46.6% from 2015. I suspect that many more went unreported due to a small value amount or the victim feeling embarrassed or the bank compensating the victim.

Credit card fraud is most common in our community following a theft.

The credit card theft is part of a previous crime and once the credit card is in hand, criminals use the card to make unlawful purchases which are regarded as deceptions. Pay wave technology makes the ‘followon’ deceptions simple. Your credit card will be used to make constant purchases under $100 until the victim or the bank deactivates the card.

The victim and the bank are left to clean up the mess. When the bank picks up the losses the entire community are the losers.

Credit card fraud also results from skimming, using false and stolen identities to obtain credit cards, as well as taking advantage of ineffective security systems to obtain internet banking passwords and account particulars.

So, the key message in prevention is – Protect Your Credit Card and your Credit Card Information. In order to do this, it is advisable to follow these guidelines: Personally collect new and replacement cards.

Contact your bank approximately two months prior to expiry and request collection of the replacement card and/or pin in person at your bank.

Keep credit and debit cards secure.

Carry the minimal amount of credit cards in your wallet or purse. Lock away when not in use. Have the credit card cancellation phone number saved in your mobile phone for quick access when credit card is stolen or lost.

Some banks are offering self-service for temporarily deactivating your credit cards. I recommend that you explore this option.

Likewise, if your mobile phone has a security pin to access, I see merit in moving away from physical credit cards and moving towards virtual cards on your mobile.

Don’t store PIN numbers with credit cards.

Use ATM’s that you are familiar with and at low risk times – daylight and busy. If familiar with ATM you will notice unusual skimming devices.

Destroy ATM receipts or do not request one. Also destroy or shred credit card statements. Secure your information as well as the credit card.

Follow your credit card. Preferably never let it leave your hand. Don’t let it leave your sight when paying bills. Attend the point of sale with your credit card.

Regularly check your credit card transactions. Action irregularities, no matter how small.

Don’t forget you can assist police as we catch up with those involved in these deceptions. Reporting incidents to police promptly and with as much information as possible will assist. At the retail interface if you see some behaviour that raises suspicion contact police or Crimestoppers.

Police have been successful identifying offenders through retailer CCTV. On Facebook follow the police page used for this purpose locally; Eyewatch Greater Shepparton Police.

With convenience comes risk. This risk can be minimised if you develop simple strategies to protect your credit cards and your credit card information.

TATURA COMMUNITY PLAN NEWS It has been a very busy month for the Tatura Community Plan group.

Suzanna Sheed MP attended the last Steering Committee Meeting and shared some valuable insights on policing in Tatura, public transport in the region and links to Melbourne, as well as the work she has been doing on education and water in the region. The Community Plan members shared local projects with Suzanna including an overview of the Mactier Park projects, walking tracks in Tatura and plans for the Tatura Museum.

A very successful business breakfast with a keynote presentation on social media by Damien Willoughby was held in late May with over 70

attendees at the Mechanics Institute. Many ideas were gathered about how people are currently using social media and how local businesses can tap into this space.

The Lake Bartlett circuit path has been laid down extending the existing path at Lake Bartlett to the south. A bridge will be installed in the near future. The path is already seeing plenty of traffic and was a high priority out of the Lake Bartlett Master Plan.

COOL HEADS YOUNG DRIVERS PROGRAM The Cool Heads Young Driver Program is a free program for the community and by the community. It specifically targets 16 to 25-year-old drivers but everyone is welcome to attend. The aim is to remove the devastating road trauma from the greater Shepparton community which is a very worthwhile objective. It is a thought provoking, confronting and informative road safety program and includes advice on a wide range of topics for young drivers. It is well presented by the Shepparton Police along with other local agencies.

GOULBURN VALLEY TREFOIL NEWS On May 11, Denise Mandersloot was the guest speaker at the Goulburn Valley Trefoil Guild held at the Shepparton Guide Hall. Denise spoke to members about her travels with her daughter to Lvang in Laos.

In January this year, they met up with some midwives undertaking a training session with health workers and midwives from remote mountain villages in Thailand and Laos. Before leaving Australia, Denise and her daughter became aware of the ‘Days for Girls’ program. At short notice, they gathered more than 30kg of packs containing hygiene products for girls and women, which were vacuum packed and squeezed into every available space in their luggage.

Denise Manderersloot and her daughter were able to present these packs to the twenty midwives in training who could not believe their good fortune in receiving such valuable

gifts of products that we take for granted. It was a moving talk that we thoroughly enjoyed.

Over afternoon tea, Denise showed members some photos and also explained that some of the women had travelled on motor bike for more than twelve hours to attend the meeting.

On June l, the Guild hosted an afternoon tea and the guest speaker was Jeanette Powell who spoke about her life after parliament.

The Tatura Gallery Café was packed with over seventy ladies in attendance. Guild secretary, Mary Earl, said the event raised funds to support the Girl Guides travel fund.

She said, “The fund enables girls to travel overseas to a wide range of countries.” Mary also thanked the owners of the Gallery Café for being very generous towards the guild.

The Mystery Lady

(Part 1) “Well, I’ve finally done it!” James Peabody announced rather loudly to his startled wife as he strolled in through the kitchen door.

“Done what dear?” asked his wife Samantha once she recovered.

“Why, perfected time travel of course. What do you think I’ve been working on, day and night, in the back shed for the past five years?

A better mouse-trap?”

“Time travel!” she exclaimed. “That’s a rather unusual hobby. What made you decide to work on that?”

“I got bored with string theory and fourth dimensional mathematics so I decided to give time travel a whirl,” explained James.

“Have you tested your machine? Sent the cat back through time, you know, that sort of thing?”

“No, not yet. Anyway, it doesn’t really work like that. You need a human to operate the equipment. So I thought I’d come in and have a cup of tea while I decided what my next step should be.”

“I know,” said Samantha brightly. “Why don’t you travel into next week, find out what the winning Tattslotto numbers are going to be and then come back with them. I’m sure a few million dollars will come in nice and handy.”

James shook his head. “It doesn’t work that way. We can’t travel into the future from this point in time because it hasn’t been written yet, it doesn’t actually exist. We can only travel backwards.”

“Well that’s not much good to us then is it?” replied Samantha. “Although, I suppose you could use your machine to correct some of history’s mistakes. It would probably be helpful if you could go back in time and kill Hitler, for example.”

“No, I’m afraid I couldn’t do that either,”

Samantha patted him gently on the shoulder.

“I know dear. You’re just not the killer type.”

“It’s not that,” said James. “My grandparents only met because of the Second World War. If the war didn’t happen then my grandparents wouldn’t have met and I wouldn’t exist. By killing Hitler, I would erase my own existence and therefore not be in a position to have killed him in the first place. It’s a timeline paradox and that’s why there are time travelling rules.”

“I didn’t know there were other time machines around,” said Samantha. “It’s a wonder they haven’t been on the news.”

James sighed. “My machine is the only one that I know of but the concept of time travel has been around for hundreds of years, and so people have had a chance to think about what rules should be in place if time travel was actually invented.”

“I see, and what are some of these rules?”

“The main rule is not to kill anyone or anything. This is called the Butterfly Effect and could have a far-reaching ripple effect on future events which could change everything.

Also, it is best to limit your actions as every action has an equal and opposite unintended consequence. I would also suggest that you don’t talk to anyone as you might inadvertently provide them with knowledge of the future, which once again, could change everything.”

“There’s not much point in going back then, is there?” said Samantha. “Inventing your machine appears to have been a complete waste of time. You should have worked on the mouse trap.”

“Give me some credit for intelligence,” replied James. “I’ve already come up with a plan.”

“Oh yes, and what is it Einstein?”

“We’re going to go back in time and solve the great mysteries of the past and I’ve already thought of the first one.”

“Okay,” cried Samantha. “That’s more like it. What’s the mystery we’re going to solve?”

James smiled. “I’ve given it a bit of thought and for our first case I thought we’d only go back fifty years or so. If you go back too far then language and clothing becomes a problem. Perhaps food and disease as well.

Our bodies probably couldn’t cope with the lifestyle of a thousand years ago.”

“Yes, yes,” replied Samantha impatiently. “So what’s the mystery?”

“In November, 1963, President Kennedy was assassinated.”

“Oh yes, I read about that. There was supposed to be another shooter behind some grassy knoll. Are we going to look for him?

This is going to be fun.”

“No, we’re not going to look for him. We’re not going to do anything dangerous. We can die just as easily in the past as we can now.”

“Hmph,” replied Samantha. “What is this mystery then?”

“There was an unknown lady called the

Babushka Woman who appeared in many of the photos and movies taken on that day but the FBI was never able to track her down. It was as if she never existed. We’re going to go back in time and find out who she was and why she was there. We need to do a little research to make sure our clothing blends in with everyone else.”

“That’s easy,” replied Samantha. “A visit to the Op Shop should sort that out. My mother always wore a scarf and a coat so I’ll just copy what I remember of her fashion.”

“See if you can get some old-fashioned sunglasses as well,” said James. “We should be as incognito as possible.”

Two days later they were ready for their first big adventure. Samantha packed a picnic lunch and a thermos of coffee in case they got hungry. “I’ve brought along a camera to take a few photos,” she said. “Is that okay? I mean it’s not every day that we get to attend an event like this, is it?”

James looked dubious. “We can’t risk losing any modern technology in the past. It could change everything.”

“I’m not a complete idiot,” replied Samantha.

“I found this old camera in one of the Op Shops I visited so that won’t be a problem.”

“I suppose that should be okay, but people might ask a few questions when you have the photos developed.”

“Then I’ll just have to learn how to develop them myself,” replied Samantha as she squeezed into the time machine beside her husband. “You can be such a fuddy-duddy worry-wart at times.” She looked around curiously. “There’s certainly a lot of dials and switches in here.”

“There are, and I’d appreciate it if you didn’t touch any of them.” He brought up a map of the United States on the screen in front of him and then zoomed into Dallas, Texas. “Okay, now we need to program in November 22, 1963. The assassination occurred shortly after noon so we should get there around ten in the morning. That will give us a chance to have a good look around and try and locate the mystery woman.”

Samantha laughed. “Wouldn’t it be funny if we actually prevented the assassination from happening.”

James looked at her sternly. “No it wouldn’t.

It would …”

“I know,” said Samantha. “It would change everything.”

“That’s right, so don’t forget it,” said James.

He glanced at his wife as his finger hovered above a button. “Hang onto your hat my dear, we’re about to make history.”

“And hopefully not change it,” added his wife.

If James and Samantha merely observe events and follow the rules as they search for the mystery lady then surely nothing can go wrong.

Anyway, the machine might not even work.

Quite a large group attended the official unveiling of Girgarre Primary School’s Sound Fence - Piano Piano, which marked the conclusion of Graeme Leak's three-month artist in residency as part of the Girgarre ReViVal. When the group set out on their journey, they dreamed of a permanent sound installation on the fence at the Girgarre Primary School but never imagined how beautiful their sound fence would be or the enthusiasm that would be demonstrated to the project by so many of the local community.

Graeme Leak is an internationally known, Australian born, UK based musician, composer, musical director, educator and instrument maker with a background in drumming and percussion. From 2005 to 2013 he toured the UK regularly as a member of the Spaghetti Western Orchestra and played in different venues across Great Britain, including a concert at the Royal Albert Hall.

Graeme appeared to have a special rapport with the students and encouraged their interest by holding workshops during school holidays at the Music Supermarket where they had fun playing around with some found treasures and ‘junkstruments’ such as a violin crafted out of a car roof, petrol cans turned into guitars and dairy milking cups used as chimes.

He showed them that even old fire hydrants cut up sound good as bells.

The premier performance of the Sound Fence was very impressive. The evening started off with a half hour community concert put on by all school students, as well as local bands and a ladies’ line dancing group.

From there, we all followed Graeme around the school grounds (like the pied piper), taking us past different attractions where children were demonstrating their musical instruments, finishing up at the Sound Fence.

It was quite obvious that each child participating was having a tremendous amount of fun. The finale was Graeme Leak ‘playing’ the fence and one had to be there to realize just how good it sounded.

Trekking With a Heavy Pack

In April, my friend John and I had the privilege of doing the Australian Alps Walking Track from Canberra to Walhalla. In just over six weeks we walked 660km over the highest peaks of ACT, NSW and Victoria.

As this was a self-guided adventure, we placed numerous food drops at road crossings or accommodation along the way.

The two of us had previously completed this walk in 2014 and were drawn for a second journey by the physical challenge of the walk and the opportunity to unwind in remote country, far from the pressures and distractions of normal life. We both trained for about four months, doing a weekly pack-walk, and I added some PT sessions with a local trainer.

One of the highlights for me was gaining an appreciation of the history of the high country. We passed through country that had been mined during the gold rush in the early 1900’s, grazed for over a century until alpine leases were discontinued, and more recently and less romantically, logged and hunted until the present time. The vast majority of the country was National Park, with a lesser amount of State Forest. We had also become acquainted with some of the rangers through some track-clearing volunteering we had done in the past year and one in particular threw us a wonderful afternoon tea at the end of a day’s walking, as well as having helped us place a food drop in a tricky location prior to the walk.

We met some interesting characters along the walk, not the least of whom were our fellow walkers. One in particular had a habit of leaving rants in hut log books, complaining about the track condition or the lack of suitable firewood in the hut (these things are frustrating, especially with only a bow-saw). One fellow we stayed with ran a hostel on a property situated in an old gold-mining town. Very much DIY, he had built the property from scratch on what was rumoured to be unreclaimed land from gold-mining times, using local alpine ash timber and mud bricks made by hand. Power was supplied off grid, by a small hydro-system running from a creek and some solar panels, with generator backup.

We saw a variety of wildlife, including brumbies in fairly large numbers in NSW, deer especially in steep country in Victoria, black cockies, ganggangs and currawongs. Fortunately, it was too cold for snakes, although wild dogs were active, especially at dusk, when their howls would fill the valley and hurry us towards our next camping site.

We took a number of off-track side trips to remote, almost inaccessible country. One was to a mountain range called the Cobberas on the NSW/ Vic border near the source of the Murray River. This involved hours of bashing through scrubby undergrowth, losing several items along the way and moving at less than 1km per hour. Another was to an old SEC hut on a creek near Mt Bogong. During the descent, my mate and I became separated and he made the hut at nightfall but I had to camp out, being about 1km downstream. It was only through using a phone GPS that I found out where I was. Fortunately, we were reunited in the morning after a nervous night out.

The weather was mostly fine and the temperatures mild, ideal for walking.

There were a few rainy days and we did get snow near Koscioszko, the highest point, and near the end at Mt Baw Baw. We finished the walk at the old gold-mining town of Walhalla and whilst relaxing at a café, noticed we had gained some friends for the finish: leeches. One even made it back to Tatura, much to my wife’s dismay.

Overall it was a wonderful experience although it didn’t always feel so at the time. I gained a greater respect for the wilderness and for those who have made a living there in the past, such as pioneer cattlemen, miners and aborigines. It is at times rugged country, but at the same time naturally beautiful. Although only a visitor, I did feel a little bit proud to be part of it, even for a short time.

GROWING MUSEUM COLLECTION

It seems strange that seventy years after the event, the Tatura Historical Society is still receiving donations of items that relate back to the POW and internment camps that were in this area during World War Two. A couple of months ago we received two exquisite model ships that had been made by a Japanese internee whilst in Camp 4.

Our latest exciting addition is a collection of about 20 puppets that we believe were made

by German POWs in Camp 13 and given to children of German families in Camp 3.

Our researchers have been in contact with Dr Theo Baer in Queensland who was a small child in the camp with his family in the 1940’s. He distinctly recalls seeing these puppets and remembers the pleasure they gave to the children. It follows that with an ever-expanding collection, space and facilities to store and display exhibits is

an ongoing problem and we are still trying to amass sufficient funding to extend the museum building. The urgency of this is exacerbated by the fact that our collection is soon to be listed on the Victorian Heritage List. Whilst this is a significant achievement for our society, it brings with it stringent requirements regarding storage and preservation of the exhibits.

Let me just add that with all the work and projects underway currently at the museum, we would be in terrible trouble if it were not for the number of people who have come on board as volunteers recently.

Their contributions have breathed new life into what was a perilously endangered organization and we can’t express how grateful we are.

SAY NO TO ILLEGAL DUMPING With illegal dumping costing the local community over $150,000 a year, Greater Shepparton City Council, River Connect and Parks Victoria are calling on people to do the right thing and dispose of unwanted goods and rubbish correctly. Greater Shepparton City Council Acting Director Infrastructure, Michael Freeman says the environmental and social costs of illegal dumping far exceed just the financial cost. He said illegal dumping can cause long term impacts including contamination of land, waterways and groundwater. Illegal dumping can vary significantly from a small bag of rubbish to large household goods such as white goods, mattresses and furniture or building materials, abandoned cars, car parts and hazardous waste such as asbestos, tyres or chemical drums in isolated areas.

With a long weekend and cray fishing opening season around the corner, all campers and holiday makers are encouraged to do the right thing and dispose of unwanted goods and

rubbish in the right bins or at their nearest resource recovery centre. Parks Victoria employs a carry in, carry out policy in all parks throughout Victoria, including the Shepparton Regional Park. Since February Parks Victoria have collected and taken 5867 kilograms of waste to landfill from 43 illegal dumps. Parks Victoria has collected 23 mattresses and 51 tyres for recycling with a total of 27 illegal dumps waiting to be collected.

Illegal dumping significantly impacts our water ways and native wildlife as well as local tourism. If people see cases of illegal dumping, they are encouraged to report these to the relevant organisation.

July 1 – Second Half of the Year Day. This is your chance to step back, evaluate your year so far with your goals and objectives (never mind the New Year’s resolutions which probably evaporated many months ago) and take action to get back on track if necessary. It’s a great opportunity to do some hard thinking (that’s ‘thinking’ not ‘drinking’) over your finances, your diet, your career and other aspects of your life that you might want to improve. It’s your choice now as to whether you make the second half of the year count!

July 2 –World UFO Day. World UFO Day is dedicated to the existence of Unidentified Flying Objects and is held to raise awareness about the existence of alien life. Probably the best way of raising awareness is for these alien creatures to actually identify themselves. There’s a school of thought that says they disguise themselves as ducks in order to watch us.

You can celebrate this day by watching UFO movies with your friends or dressing up as your favourite alien character.

July 3 – International Joke Day. No, this has nothing to do with politicians. It’s strange but true that different countries have different understandings of humour. While Australians laugh at English humour, which tends to be subtle, clever and ironic, Americans have no idea what the laughing is all about and prefer a more ‘ín-your-face’, slapstick approach. The English think that the Germans and Dutch don’t even have a sense of humour but that is because they don’t understand the very dry German jokes.

July 5 – Compliment Your mirror Day. May people suffer silently from depression or lack of self-esteem. It’s easy to focus on the negatives in our life and ignore the many positive aspects. However, complimenting our mirrors isn’t just about how we look. We can do our best to look after our health and bodies but they will always be the ones that we were dealt by our parents’ genes. If only my dad was George Clooney. Anyway, it’s about acknowledging our inner strength and our inner beauty and remembering that your best friend is looking right back at you.

July 8 – International Chocolate Day. There appears to be four or five of these days scattered throughout the year which is fair enough. So, just indulge yourself with anything composed of chocolate.

July 11 – World Population Day. The population of the world did not reach 1 billion people until 1804. It reached 2 billion in 1927, 3 billion in 1960, 4 billion in 1974, 5 billion in 1987, 6 billion in 1999 and 7 billion in 2008. It is projected that we will reach 8 billion in 2024 and the population will continue to increase at a rate of 1.1% each year. Logic dictates that at some stage we will run out of food, water, habitable space and car parking at the MCG. Something has to give. This day is organised each year to remind us of this fact.

July 12 – Cow Appreciation Day. 1995 marked the beginning of the cow revolution, when herds of beef cattle everywhere decided to take a stand for the future of the bovine race. One rather intelligent cow, Heff R. Jones (now known as Eaton Birds) took his limited grasp of English and painted ‘Eat Mor Chikin’ on a billboard. This remarkable event set in motion a movement among cows everywhere, to encourage us to eat more chicken. So, if you want to appreciate a cow, eat some chicken. I suppose it makes sense if you’re a cow.

July 13 – Embrace Your Inner Geek Day. Geek: a usually intelligent person who is unfashionable or socially awkward. The word geek is a slang term originally used to describe eccentric or non-mainstream people. In current use, the word typically describes an enthusiast who is obsessed with a hobby or intellectual pursuit and can speak fluently on it for hours, boring everybody in the immediate vicinity. I’m not sure how this differs from a nerd. Anyway, we all have some secret hobby or obsession, so today you have carte blanche to bore all of your friends and workmates by describing it in complete and utterly painstaking detail.

July 14 – Bastille Day. This day marks the storming of the Bastille in Paris in 1789 which triggered the French Revolution. Although it eventually became a reign of terror, the initial declaration of freedom, equality and brotherhood is still pertinent in today’s world where our governing elite still believe that some people are more equal than others and are trying to legislate to make it so.

July 15 – World Youth Skills Day. This is another United Nations initiative to generate greater awareness of the importance of technical and vocational training. The intent is to reduce unemployment among the youth across the globe. When I was young, this was phrased as, ‘Get a haircut and get a real job.’

July 17 – World Day of International Justice. Each year, people around the world use this day to host events to promote international criminal justice, especially support for the International Criminal Court. The day usually attracts international news attention, and allows groups to use the day to focus attention on particular issues such as genocide and violence against women.

July 18 – Nelson Mandela International Day. This is another United Nations Day and is in recognition of Nelson Mandela’s contribution to the culture of peace and freedom. For 67 years Nelson Mandela devoted his life to the service of humanity, as a human rights lawyer, a prisoner of conscience, an international peacemaker and the first democratically elected president of a free South Africa. You are asked (yes, you, no don’t look around, I’m talking to you), to devote 67 minutes of your time to helping others. That’s not asking too much is it?

July 20 – Space Exploration Day. There is a connection with World Population Day. As our population continues to expand, the overflow will need to go somewhere. After we’ve built underground cities and floating cities have filled up the oceans, we will need to colonise other worlds and export our wonderful human culture to the rest of the universe. We will therefore need to continue exploring space and searching for human compatible planets. You can celebrate this day by organising a star gazing party. Be sure to rug up.

July 22 – Pi Approximation Day. This is a fun mathematical day to celebrate Pi. Why July 22 I hear you ask? Pi, which is the ratio of any circle’s circumference to its diameter, corresponds to the fraction 22/7. Do you get it now? Pi Day has been observed in many ways, including eating a pie, throwing pies and discussing the significance of the number 22/7.

Perhaps the Hot Bread shop could bake a special Pi pie to commemorate this. My son can actually recite Pi up to fifty decimal places. No, I don’t know why either.

July 28 – World Hepatitis Day. The World Health Organisation has set the goal of eliminating viral hepatitis by 2030. Viral hepatitis is caused by five distinct hepatitis viruses. Infection from these viruses results in approximately 1.45 million deaths each year. These viruses are transmitted through contaminated water and food, as well as by contact with blood or bodily fluids, through unsafe injections or transfusions.

July 29 – International Tiger Day. This is an annual celebration to raise awareness for tiger conservation. The goal is to promote a global system for protecting the natural habitats of tigers and to raise public awareness and support for tiger conservation issues.

July 30 – International Day of Friendship. Friendship Day was originally promoted by Joyce Hall, the founder of Hallmark cards in 1930, intended to be a day when people celebrated their friendships by sending cards. Perhaps I’m just a cynic but I sense an ulterior motive here. Besides, true friends don’t need to send a card; texts are much easier and far cheaper.

PORK MEATBALLS This is a particularly easy and yet quite tasty recipe. Can be used in a main course, as canapes or just as a snack, served with Sour Cream. They also freeze well.

Ingredients: 500g Pork Mince 1 Tablespoon Soy Sauce 1 Garlic Clove Peanut Oil Method: Mince or grate garlic finely.

Mix all ingredients together.

Shape into balls.

Chill for 20 minutes.

Fry in peanut oil.

(Though I have fried in olive oil and find that is quite good as well.)

JULY IN THE GARDEN

When you look outside this time of year the last thing you feel like doing is standing out in the cold, wet and windy weather. Don’t let this put you off. There is so much to do in the garden and a lot more to do in the garden shed.

Get off the couch and put on the thermals, the beanie, a coat and your gumboots and warm yourself up with some winter garden love.

Tool Time: Why not head out to the shed, and sharpen, clean, oil and maintain your garden tools. Sounds tedious, but it’s really rewarding, and will save you cash in the long run. Practicing tool hygiene will prevent the spread of disease. Bleach is a classic to use on your pruners and even pots you wish to recycle. Be sure to oil your pruners after cleaning to avoid any rust from developing.

Mulch Your Beds: Top up mulch on your veggie patches, herb gardens and ornamental beds. Choose sustainable, low environmental impact mulch, one that will enrich your soil as it breaks down such as pea straw or sugar cane mulch.

Green Manure: Green manure crops are good to go now to improve that dormant veggie patch if you’re not growing anything at the moment. You can use crops like faba beans or field peas and lupins. Remember to chop and drop them before they flower.

Pruning and Weeding: This is a great job to do at this time of year. Deciduous fruit trees love a big old haircut now, except your apricot!

Just as important is to follow up with a copper or lime sulphur spray to help control rot and fungus diseases. It’s bare root season too!

Many ornamental and fruit trees are ready to

plant now, so try figs, pears, apples, cherries, pistachios, peaches, plums, nectarines to name a few and also bare-rooted roses.

Roses: This month is a good time to think about pruning your roses too. Some people may delay until next month with certain types of roses but in general, now is the right time.

When tackling roses bear the following in mind; Cuts should be no more than 5mm above a bud and should slope away from it, so that water does not collect on the bud. This applies to all cuts, whether removing dead wood, deadheading or annual pruning.

Cut to an outward-facing bud to encourage an open-centred shape. With roses of spreading habit prune some stems to inward-facing buds to encourage more upright growth.

Cuts must be clean, so keep your secateurs sharp. For larger stems, use loppers or a pruning saw.

Cut out dead and diseased stems and spindly and crossing stems.

Aim for well-spaced stems that allow free air flow. On established roses, cut out poorly flowering old wood and saw away old stubs that have failed to produce new shoots With the exception of climbing roses, prune all newly planted roses hard to encourage vigorous shoots. Trace suckers back to the roots from which they grow and pull them away.

What to Grow? There’s still a bit happening in the veggie patch during these colder months.

You could try planting out some tasty winter treats such as spinach, carrots, sweet peas, onions, broad beans, cabbage, peas, lettuce, artichoke, garlic, potato, radish, rhubarb etc. You can also plant some, chamomile, coriander and nasturtiums in the herb patch.

If you want some colour for your garden pots then a few suggestions are Dianthus, Viola, Stock, Polyanthus, Primular, Pansy, Snapdragon, Delphiniums, Alyssum, Poppies, Wallflower, Foxglove, Statice and Primrose.

TATURA PRIMARY SCHOOL

Tatura Primary School students perform on the big stage! Earlier this term our grade 5 and 6 Choir and Band performed to a packed house at Westside Performing Arts Centre.

Since Term One, our students have had the opportunity to learn an instrument and be part of the instrumental music program at Tatura Primary School. Over forty students have begun learning an instrument from the choice of flute, trombone, trumpet, saxophone, clarinet, drums and keyboard. The concert on May 23, was arranged by the teacher Lindy Tennant. Many locals will know Lindy as she has been teaching instrumental music at Mooroopna Secondary College for many years. She began working at our school this year and has formed a band as well. The idea behind the concert was many-fold.

It was a chance for parents to hear their children perform, it gave students the chance to play and sing on the big stage and it was a chance to meet students from the other local schools who have been working with Lindy. It was a privilege to be there and see our students proudly performing in front of their families and the communities from Mooroopna Secondary College, Mooroopna Primary School and Mooroopna Park Primary School. The band program is instilling much confidence and music skill into our students.

Thanks to our music teachers Lindy Tennant and Nicole Thorne for their wonderful teaching. Keep up the great work everyone!

On another musical note, Nicole Thorn is planning to form a playgroup for parents and children in the local area. She will encourage all children to sing and play and teach parents how important music and play is to young developing children. LIGHTS FOR THE KIDS PROJECT

WINTER LUNCHEON

We are excited to announce the commencement of our special project at the Tatura Lawn Tennis Club. You’ll see some action at the courts over the next few months with our two concrete courts being converted to synthetic grass and all four synthetic grass courts will have lights.

This wonderful initiative provides the opportunity for kids, young and old, to play tennis all year round. It means we’ll be able to offer extended hours of coaching and we’ll be setting some programs for night tennis. A huge congrats and thank you to Alan Morse for the endless hours spent in sourcing the funding through many grant applications and meetings with Council, Tennis Victoria and the Contractors. Our thanks also to the Greater Shepparton City Council and Tennis Victoria for their support and assistance in bringing the project together.

We’ll keep you posted with some photos as we progress.

farm animals she treated. Everyone is welcome to come along and hear her story as it is sure to be most entertaining.

HETERONYMS

I was teaching English grammar to a student recently and was explaining the difference between a homophone and a homonym. For those of you who may have forgotten what these are, I’ll briefly explain the difference.

A homophone is a word that sounds exactly the same as another word but is spelt differently and has a different meaning. Some examples are: blue / blew, sail / sale, ate / eight.

A homonyms sound exactly the same, are spelt exactly the same but have different meanings. For example: Weigh yourself on the scale / I will scale the wall, the price is fair / I am going to the fair.

During our discussion, I thought of desert (as in an arid piece of land) and desert (abandon). These words had the same spelling and different meanings which would have made them homonyms but they also had a different pronunciation which therefore disqualifies them from being homonyms. “What on earth are they?” I wondered. Well, now I know.

They are called heteronyms and for those of you who haven’t nodded off, I have a few examples.

Bass as in the fish vs bass as in music.

Bow as in firing an arrow vs bow at the end of a performance.

Close as in it almost hit me vs close the door.

Wind the alarm clock vs wind in the willows.

Record the program vs setting a new world record.

Convict as in a criminal vs convict as in found guilty.

Digest as in eat vs digest being a collection of reading material.

Does as in doing something vs does being more than one deer.

Dove being the bird vs dove into the water.

House being a building you live in vs house as in providing living quarters.

Lead as in guiding vs lead as in the metallic element.

Moderate being keeping within reason vs moderate as in presiding over.

Sow as in female pig vs sow the seeds in the field.

There are many more in the list but I’m sure you have the picture by now.

Having grown up with the English language, most of us are able to cope with this proliferation of words that are spelt the same being pronounced differently. Breaking these down phonetically doesn’t work because unless you know the context, then you don’t know in which direction you need to break it. Lewis Carol, of ‘Alice In Wonderland’ fame, highlighted the lunacy of the English language during a lecture he was giving. The wrote the word ‘ghot’ on the board and challenged anybody in the room to pronounce it correctly. After several failed attempts, he announced that the correct pronunciation was ‘fish’. After the audience quietened down he explained the following: ‘gh’ as in the word ‘enough’, ‘o’ as in ‘women’, and ‘t’ as in ‘station’. One can only imagine the mental anguish that new arrivals coming to our country experience as they grapple to make sense of our language. The problem for them is that it rarely makes any sense at all.

TATURA PROBUS CLUB On May 25, we held our monthly meeting at Lagozzino’s Top Pub. It was a good gathering with four guests present, whom we warmly welcomed.

The President, Bill Woods, opened the meeting and gave a report on the outing to Carisbrook Harness Racing which was a happy and friendly day for the members who attended. There was even a race named ‘The Tatura Probus Club Trot’.

Our first guest speaker was Cara Disint from the Country Fire Authority.

Cara has been speaking on behalf of the CFA for approximately eight years and gave advice regarding fire safety, particularly during the winter months. Top of the list was to check your smoke detector and to make sure that an exit plan was in place and that doors were easily accessible.

Cara is a very entertaining speaker whose talk was laced with plenty of humour. She was immensely popular and didn’t mind answering questions well into morning tea time. We are very fortunate to have volunteers like Cara in our Community.

Fiona Smolenaars spoke to us about Lighthouse, formed in 2014 by community members who were concerned about youth unemployment.

They started a program to help youngsters connect with people who care and who also want them to grow into well-adjusted adults. They have a 20-year plan to help build healthy and confident children, through primary school into secondary school and beyond. Fiona told us they have 360 volunteers going into schools, to help students in various ways, and 29 businesses giving school leavers an insight into what work is available. The Fairley Foundation helps with scholarships and assistance necessary for students to attend universities. Fiona said the important thing that kids wanted and needed was the ability to connect with people and that is what Lighthouse is working towards. They have recently set up The Haven, a place for young people to learn cookery, play board games, go walking together and generally have fun and relax with others.

This is a wonderful concept for the young people of today and we wish Lighthouse a successful future. On behalf of the club, Cath DeAngelis thanked Fiona for a very interesting talk.

HARSTON CWA

Harston CWA held their meeting at the Harston hall this month. We enjoyed morning tea with our meeting while we heard about the goings on at the state conference. Margaret Chance informed us on the annual meeting which she thoroughly enjoyed, Glenys Eberle spoke about Fridays sessions which included four very interesting speakers plus debates on three resolutions finishing with a great night at the State Dinner. Judith Poole then spoke on the final day. All who attended enjoyed themselves. Rushworth's morning coffee was attended by a number of members who all had a wonderful time. We celebrated two birthdays and Marg Corrigan won the raffle.

At the end of our meeting we were saddened to be informed that our beloved treasurer of 14 years, Heather Gow, had passed away that morning. Our sympathies go out to her husband John and families. Rest in Peace Heather. Next meeting will be at The Gallery in Tatura July 10 at 11am. The competition will be the cuddliest Teddy Bear.

TATURA BOWLS CLUB The following positions, for 2017-2018, were filled at the AGM in May. Chairman: Rob Crotty, Administration: Adrian Barry, Finances: Rob Crotty / Derik Miller, Directors: Jason Carter, Freda Clement, John Evans, David Westin.

The following fees have been set for the 2017-2018 bowls season: Full Membership $130; Social Member $30; School Age / Junior Member - Free.

Full and social membership entitles unlimited attendance and Friday, all year round, hot finger food and all drinks at Members’ prices. From the first Friday in the month, from October until the end of pennant in March, full and social member meals will be $10 and non-members will be $15. All non-members must be signed in by a member. So far, this month we have had nine new application for membership. It is great to see the greens being used daily and especially on a Friday afternoon.

Friday Nights are getting bigger and bigger with the hot finger food very popular. We must thank the following three sponsors who donate, on a Friday night, for the entire year and have done so for the past three years – Fantastic Furniture, Tahbilk Wines and the Tatura Lunch and Bakery.

I will post a full list all of our wonderful sponsors who pay annually for their outdoor signage.

Social Bowls is every Sunday. Names on Notice Board by 12 noon. Play starts at 1pm. Ring Adrian on 0418 523 251 if you can’t get in to put your name up. All visiting bowlers welcome. This is also followed by hot finger food while the winners are worked out. Mark Spencer and Ned Cooper seem to have a strangle hold so I feel they may be nobbled next week.

We have a raffle going which has been donated by Unilever. Half of the proceeds will go to the Tatura Hospital. The raffle will be drawn at 6pm on June 30.

The draw for the Over 60’s is up so check the notice boards and place your names on the lists for this event and the on-coming pennant season.

We will have a Division 2 and after winning Division 6 last season we have applied for a 12 a side this year in division 6.

It may be winter but the greens are running very nicely and if it is wet we can play Indoor Carpet Bowls and there will still be the winner’s prize and hot finger food.

Trivia Night: Dhurringile Community / Tennis members supported the recent Trivia Night held at the Murchison Community Hall. The night was professionally hosted and money raised on the night went to the local Murchison Community Care (nursing home). The event was well represented with over fourteen tables of ten fighting for first place.

Although there were prizes and auctions galore, the best prize of all was Dhurringile winning the main event on the night. Woo hoo!! Well done to Dhurringile’s brains trust table of Martyn Baumber, Liz and Fraser Kerrins, Merrilyn Muto, Karen, George and Craig Rath, Roc, Lisa and Aaron Niglia. We should also mention Aaron for winning the bottle of plonk for the table through the ‘Toss the Gold Coin’ competition.

Aaron’s Bocce skills have definitely paid off. Those who couldn’t make it to Murchison’s Pre-school 80’s themed disco night missed out on a great event. Well done Murchison! You know how to put on a great show of events.

Meal Deal: Dhurringile’s next meal deal casserole night and community plan meeting, Welcome Sign Entry, will be held on Wednesday June 28 at 7pm. Lisa Kubeil from Council will be on hand to answer any questions.

We also farewell our Swiss Miss, Corina, who will be heading back to Switzerland. Corina has been part of our community and has been working for the Lang Family for the past year. We wish her all the very best.

Winter Tennis is continuing and the weather has been fantastic. Jet Set John has lifted his game after Patty V gave him a pep talk. Since then the team has been competitive. All members are welcome to play and fill a spot in the team. Thanks to Roc Niglia and Brett Cummins who have been filling in.

Free Activities in the Park: Dhurringile Tennis Club has registered with City of Greater Shepparton and the club will host the ANZ Tennis Hot Shots Grand Slam Tour. The club will be attending local clubs and schools around the area to boost junior participation in sport. The event will commence in Term 4 on Friday, October 13. There will also be something for the adults to participate in and keep fit. Sam Condon from Tennis Victoria will be coordinating the Cardio Tennis in the Park.

This will coincide with the ANZTHS. Save the date and stay tuned for more information.

The Club will also host a Free Indoor Dancing in the Park. Pre and primary school aged children will join in some fun dancing while at the same time learning eye-hand coordination and fun games to enhance all ball skilled sports. There will be plenty of disco lights flashing.

Movie Night: Dhurringile’s Free Activity Movie Night was a success and due to popular demand, the club has requested for another movie night from council. The event will take place sometime in March 2018 with the date to be confirmed later.

Grants: Dhurringile Tennis Club Court Time Project will kick off once Fraser gives the all clear. This is a result of DTC’s success in receiving a Community Matching Grant of $2500 through City of Greater Shepparton.

The club will also receive $1000 for the Events Grant Round Two this year. The club will hold a New Year’s Eve Rock ‘N Roll Gala Event for farmers and the broader community on December 31 at the Victory Hall in Tatura. The club is seeking support from local businesses as more funds are required in order to make this event a success. If your business is able to contribute to the purchase of a table of ten, hall hire, band accommodation, catering and raffle prizes, please contact Lisa Niglia on 04 2826 6310. Any profits on the night will benefit the local Dhurringile Community and the Sporting Rec Reserve. More information will be presented throughout the year. This is an event not to be missed.

6-7. Exceptional. There were some tricky questions this month so give yourself a pat on the back for the ones you got right and an uppercut for all your silly mistakes or poor guesses.

8-9. Smarty Pants. So close and yet so far. However, there were some really difficult questions this month so I doubt that anyone got them all correct so perhaps you are the best of the best.

10. Genius. I’m not sure that anybody actually got all of these questions correct this month as a couple of them were rather difficult but if you did then you have truly earned the title of genius. Those of us who are lesser mortals, salute you!

COFFEE+ IS GOING GREEN Coffee+ has introduced biodegradable and compostable cups and lids for their take away drinks. The number of cups used each day is at least 160 so this will reduce landfill considerably. Michelle is passionate about this and hopes that customers will welcome the change and accept that a small increase in price is not much to pay to save the planet one cup at a time.

BIGGEST MORNING TEA IN THE AFTERNOON There was a real team effort among the staff of Parkvilla Aged Care facility when putting on an afternoon tea for this year’s Australia's Biggest Morning Tea. Their event raised over $400 for the Cancer Council and with over 70 people in attendance. Staff member, Anita, hosted the afternoon tea and the rooms were decorated by the night staff using a daffodil theme with replica daffodils and tea pots situated throughout the main rooms. Anita was extremely pleased to find a daffodil printed table cloth in an Op Shop which added to the Daffodil Day theme. The residents able to participate and family, friends and staff all enjoyed themselves. The staff brought in so many plates of food that the biscuits held in reserve as back up were not needed. A competition was held with numbered cups that had participants choosing a number, hoping to guess the one that held the prize - $20 for those who had bought a $2 ticket and $50 for those who had bought a $5 ticket. There was also a raffle, with a $30 donation used to purchase two nice teapots as prizes.

As the most common cancers appear to be breast and prostate, the female residents had decorated bras and the male’s jocks, which made a nice display for visitors to see. Even those residents not able to physically work on the garments, had very set ideas on how they were to be done and with staff helping, these were made up exactly as directed.

With such a success, talk has already been made about doing it again next year.

OCCASIONAL CARE CUBBY NEWS The Cubby Occasional Care has a new assistant, Jess Bruce. Jess grew up in Wangaratta and moved to Tatura three years ago after spending time in Melbourne. She and her partner have one child, River. She is trained in childcare and has also worked as a beauty therapist (a woman of many talents) and has loved having time at home with River. Jess is enjoying getting to know the children at The Cubby and helping Tarja to organise the activities. On Tuesday, the children all got rugged up warmly and helped give out posters around the town. They enjoyed being out in the sunshine and visiting the different businesses.

The Cubby will be having a Morning Tea open session on Thursday, June 29 9:15 to 10:30. Staff would love to meet more wonderful families, so bring a friend and your child and experience the warm and welcoming atmosphere at The Cubby Occasional Care.
