STOCKYARD PLAIN PLANTING DAY

The Harston Landcare Group recently held a tree planting day at Stockyard Plain. The site was very soggy, but that didn’t stop a group of around 40 enthusiastic volunteers turning up to help plant around 500 trees, shrubs and grasses. The planting day brought people from Shepparton, Murchison and Tatura together. There was plenty of mud on site, and the children who came along very much enjoyed getting their hands dirty! The participants enjoyed soup and a BBQ after the planting. Unfortunately the schools planting day was cancelled due to the wet weather, with
heavy ran the morning of that planting day. “Although the site was a little wetter than we hoped for, everyone still had a great morning helping out at this great wetland” HLG President Nick O’Halloran said. On behalf of the Landcare Group, Nick thanks all of the participants, and LCG members who have been involved preparing the site for the planting day. The Harston Landcare Group received funding for a four year project at Stockyard Plain through the Communities for Nature program. The project is revegetating selected areas at Stockyard Plain, controlling weeds
and introduce animal species, and raising community awareness of the site as a key wetland breeding site for Brolgas, which are the largest water bird in south-east Australia. The wetland is also nearly full for the first time since 2011 following recent rains, and there is a large diversity of birds visiting the site at the moment, including Brolgas. The Landcare Group is planning a bird survey shortly, to better understand the species utilising the site. Another planting day will be held in 2015. I got so mad I threw my bags down, pushed through the crowd of bikies and got her purse back before helping her to her feet. THE LAST OF THE PIONEERS
Joyce Carr with her daughter Olwyn Milner Local identity Joyce Alida Carr celebrated her 97th birthday on June 23 at Moyola Lodge in Tatura with family and friends. Joyce was born at Toora in Gippsland to Ted and Alice Buegge, the eldest of five children. Joyce remembers the clearing of the land, the burning of the tree stumps and the trips to town in the horse and buggy. After some years the family moved to Seaview, near Welshpool, where Joyce’s father Ted milked cows and grew corn and potatoes. The sea air did not agree with Joyce’s
mum Alice, as she suffered badly with asthma and doctors advised her to move to a dryer climate. The family decided to move to Charter House at Runnymede, between the Campaspe River and Mount Pleasant Creek. Charter House was mainly a dairy farm and all the family helped in the dairy until they married. Ted, Joyce’s father, was a self-taught carpenter and everything he built was meant to last a life time. He built a smoke house to preserve meat and fish and bacon. He kept bees, maintained a large orchard and grew all their own vegetables. Joyce married Albert Victor Carr in 1938 and farmed at Diggora where her three children were born Norma, Ray and Olwyn. Joyce is a great cook and gardener and no one left Moyola Park hungry or without a bag of vegetables. Joyce still complains she cannot do any cooking at the Lodge! Joyce and Vic, who passed away in 1986, worked tirelessly for the community, their church and family. Joyce, in her 97 years, has given a special gift to her family, ‘To learn to give and take’ – one of life’s greatest gifts. Joyce enjoys the visits of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and they are amazed she can still recite many poems from her youth. Joyce Carr, may you continue to enjoy your time at Moyola in the care of the wonderful staff and the company of your family and friends. Bill Milner – Joyce’s loving son in law

ANOTHER PIECE OF TATURA HISTORY GONE Local Freemasons opened a Masonic Lodge in Tatura around 1924 (which was built with volunteer labour) and have spent the years since then raising money and doing good deeds for many people. With dwindling member numbers they made the sad decision to disband last year, with many of them transferring to the Mooroopna Lodge who meet in the Shepparton Masonic Centre which was trashed by vandals causing extensive internal damage. The redevelopment of the existing site in Shepparton is well under way and will incorporate two new commercial tenancies at the front of the Masonic Centre with shared amenities.

Locally the organisation has provided scholarships to school youths, raised thousands of dollars for bushfire and flood-relief funds and donated almost $200,000 to the Goulburn Valley Health oncology unit in Shepparton. This month the iconic building in Tatura was sold at auction and though there are rumours circulating as to what will become of the building it is unclear as to what will really happen to it. TATURA’S ‘WHAT’S HAPPENING IN OUR TOWN’ FORUM
Jen and Carl from the Tatura Community Plan steering committee at the recent What’s Happening in our Town forum at Victory Hall The Tatura Community Plan Committee recently hosted a successful ‘What’s Happening in our town’ forum at Victory Hall, bringing together many community organisations and residents. The purpose of the forum was to bring Tatura’s community based committees to share information on their aims and projects for 2014/15, inform the community on the outcomes from the current Tatura Community Plan, and inform the community
of the impending annual review of the Tatura Community Plan. Tatura Community Plan Committee Chair Carl Walters provided the background to the forum, and the aims and role of the Tatura Community Plan committee. The Tatura Community Plan vision is that Tatura is a viable, vibrant, healthy, safe, well serviced and resilient community to be enjoyed by all. A representative of each community group then had the opportunity to speak about their plans for the year, and
about any issues or ideas they wanted to bring to the community. Community groups represented included Friends of Victory Hall, the Tatura Men’s Shed, Tatura Community House, the Private Robert Mactier Memorial Statue Project and RSL, Transition Tatura, Tatura Senior Citizens, Tatura Primary School and Tatura Rotary. After the formalities, participants enjoyed a supper provided by the Friends of Victory Hall. Tatura Community Plan Committee Chair Carl Walters said “We had a great turnout for the forum. It’s the first time something like this has been done in Tatura, and it was great to hear from the different groups about what’s important to them, and how others in the community can support them”. Carl was also pleased at the networking that occurred. “These sort of events support the community in forming partnerships between all of the great community groups in town, who do a lot of hard work’, Carl hopes the forum may become an annual event. ALL SAINTS GUILD NEWS Our dear past member, Joyce Carr, has just celebrated her 97th birthday. On visiting Joyce we told her we had just come from a favourite hymn singing hour. Joyce remarked that her favourite hymn was ‘All Things Bright and Beautiful’ then proceeded to give us a solo ‘How Great was That’! Another past member was Mavis Hunt who celebrated her 100th birthday recently. What an achievement! Fit enough to run in the next Olympic marathon! Then we have Marie Russell turning 93 years
who will be attending the Girl Guides Fashion and Yesterday Parade. Marie was a Lone Guide in 1938 and that takes our minds back just a few years. Joyce Pogue also in her 97th year, and so we go on. Two of our current members are having their 90th birthdays, but that’s a big secret for now. Can it be said that cooking all those tasty cakes and more for ‘Guild Functions’; and having lots of laughs on the way is the recipe for a long and happy life? Come along and join our
meeting to find out – who knows? The Guild meets every second Friday at 1.30pm for Holy Communion and then the meeting at 2pm. Not forgetting our youth of today, Val Maynard’s granddaughter Mardi Petherick, played in the team that won the under 15’s State Hockey Championship in Melbourne during the school holidays, another reason to celebrate!

MURCHISON & DISTRICT SENIOR CITIZENS CLUB Our July meeting was reasonably attended considering the number of members on the sick list. My thanks to our President and Treasurer for conducting the meeting as well as being Secretary due to my absence.
Marisa O’Halloran (Transition Tatura) and Terry Court (GV Community Energy) are excited by the opportunities for renewable energy that will be explored through the Tatura Energy Opportunity Study.
TATURA ENERGY OPPORTUNITY STUDY An Energy Opportunity Study in Tatura has just been announced. The study will be funded through Regional Development Victoria with local partners Tatura Milk Industries, Unilever, Goulburn Valley Water, Resource Resolutions, Transition Tatura, Tatura Community Plan Committee and the Greater Shepparton City Council. Jeanette Powell, MP for Shepparton, announced $25,000 funding at TMI recently to support the $40,000 study. The energy study is in response to Tatura’s energy supply being at capacity, and limiting expansion of industry in our town. The key aspect of the study is to increase energy supply to Tatura using renewable energy sources. The study will consider all renewable energy sources, including large scale, community-owned solar, and using waste products for energy production. The study will also consider energy efficiency, tariff and load-shedding options for residents and commercial dwellings in Tatura, which will result in reduced energy demand and cost.
The study will be led by GV Community Energy, who will appoint a consultant to undertake the study. Terry Court, board member of GV Community Energy said “This study provides a unique opportunity to secure an energy future for Tatura that benefits industry, residents and the environment. The potential for increased regional economic output and job opportunities, while reducing energy costs is incredibly positive. “We have brought together industry, government and community to develop this study, and it will be a real partnership for all of these groups”. Marisa O’Halloran, from Transition Tatura said, “It is fantastic that industry and the community will be working together to unveil the opportunities to provide all Tatura’s future electricity requirements using renewable energy sources”. The study is due to commence in August and be completed by October this year.

TATURA GIRL GUIDES NEWS By the time this goes to press most of our events will have been and gone. On July 10 the Guide Uniforms of Yesteryear from the Guide Shop in Melbourne and the showing of Tatura’s Velvet Emporium fashions. The Guides remarks when trying on the uniforms were, “Thanks goodness the uniforms have changed”, but Bernadette’s fashions brought a different reaction, “Wow – this is fun!” Val McNab’s Cook Off was held on July 20 at the Mooroopna College against other Guides in the region. To prepare for the event we will practise at Leader Sam’s home, hopefully to bring ‘home the bacon!’ once again. Winners will receive a small engraved rolling pin for a keepsake trophy. Guides and Leaders alike were very grateful to the Lions Club for the shelves they supplied. We were able to install them in the hall and storeroom. District Manager Marj Earl and Phyll will be attending the Change-Over Meeting of the Lions Club held in July. The Guide meetings are held every Thursday night 5.30pm to 7pm. CAFFINE A PROBLEM, BUT NOT ALCOHOL Last week the Legislative and Governance Forum on Food Regulation met to discuss issues to do with labelling of food and drinks. The Forum comprises the Health Ministers from each Australian state and territory, Ministers from the Federal Australian government and Health Ministers from New Zealand. “At its latest Forum they discussed labelling for both alcohol and caffeinated drinks. The forum unanimously decided that the voluntary labels to warn people of the dangers when drinking alcohol whilst pregnant should not be made compulsory for at least 2 more years and then be reconsidered. Unfortunately, our research shows many people still do not realise the potential risks to unborn babies and how drinking alcohol can cause permanent brain damage,” Federal Member for Murray, Dr Sharman Stone said. “The Forum had previously determined that mandated labels should be reviewed last October. Meanwhile, the Forum decided that caffeine in soft drinks and energy dinks needs more strict labelling and regulation. “Thus the alcohol industry will continue to self-regulate. Unfortunately the mixed alcohol drink market in particular has not chosen to use warning labels and the brewing and wine making industry had not been much better. Self-regulation simply does not work. AUGUST GARDEN PLAN.. Finish rose pruning this month if you haven’t already done so. Once pruned, give them a clean up spray with Lime Sulphur. This will help reduce fungus and rot on stems and new emerging foliage. Lime Sulphur controls a range of pests and fungal diseases including Black Spot, Powdery Mildew, European Red Mite, San Jose Scale Vine Leaf Blister Mite, Bunch Mite, Freckle, Leaf Curl, Rust and Tomato Mite. A good product to use is YATES Lime Sulphur or AMGROW Lime Sulphur. Always spray in good weather conditions, and give the rose bushes a generous amount. Wear gloves while spraying and be careful not to breathe in the spray.
A tip for pruning Roses.... Always use sharp secateurs a blunt ones don’t cut. They tear the stems instead which can cause more damage to the plant then incorrect pruning. Always cut out dead stems. Try and open up the centre of the bush, so there’s more air circulating. Look out for water shoots. There are an olive green or even pink colour, and absolutely essential. Take care of the water shoots because these are the young growth and this is where the rose will have its flowers. Prune down to an outward facing bud for the new growth to shoot out and produce more flowers. For climbing Roses train the canes to a horizontal position then you will achieve
more flowers along the length of the vine rather than just on the ends. When they have flowered, cut back to one or two shoots for repeat flowering. We have a selection of bare root roses available, both standards and bush roses, in the Garden Centre to choose from. Do you have Citrus trees? Well now is a good time to give them a boost with Citrus fertiliser. When it comes to giving citrus trees tender loving care there are a few basic principles – and one of the most important is adequate nutrition. Citrus trees are gross feeders, that means they need to be fed in July, November and March with a good citrus and fruit tree fertiliser. Give them 125 grams for every year of the tree’s age at each of the applications, but when the tree gets to about 10 years old or older it needs 1 1/4 kg of fertiliser. Spread the fertiliser evenly around the drip zone, water in, and the tree will power away. Even with regular fertilising the leaves might still show symptoms of iron deficiency. This is evident when the leaf veins stand out dark green, yellow or even white. To correct this and other deficiencies, add trace element mixture around the base of the tree. If the fruit are sour there is a simple way to sweeten them. Sprinkle about six handfuls of sulphate of potash around the tree and then water in with two teaspoons of Epsom salts
mixed into 10 litres of water. Taste-test citrus before harvesting, some varieties colour well early in the season but it can take months before they are sweet enough to enjoy. There are a few pests that attack citrus and one of the most common is the citrus leaf miner. It’s not life threatening, but it will reduce the yield. Look out for silvery trails in the leaf that’s made by the miner and it distorts the leaf. Spraying with a white oil preparation will soon control that. We recommend our use Richgro Fruit and Citrus fertiliser or Searls Organic 5 in 1 Plant Food. What to plant this month in the patch and garden. WINTER LUNCHEON A SUCCESS! A large crowd attended the Soup and Sandwich Luncheon at the Tatura Fire Station on June 27. Everyone enjoyed the delicious homemade soups, freshly cut sandwiches, tea or coffee with a slice of cake, for their lunch on a cold winter’s day. The Trading Table was again stocked with a variety of homemade goodies; these are always very popular and very reasonably priced. G.V. TREE GROUP INC. Another AGM has passed with only one variation in the executive line-up, a replacement for vice-president so that shouldn’t rock the boat too much. As usual, we will be going into recess during August, when the gates will be closed, hopefully with the racks empty of trees. If you are looking for bargains we will be selling everything half price until the end of July. There is quite a range to choose from. A couple of shrubby plants that caught my eye were Indigofera australis which is about a metre tall and at present covered with purple pea flowers.
Regilia velutina, the Godwana Xmas Bush, is actually a small tree with red flowers which is quite happy in poor soils. I think I mentioned Melaleuca pulchella recently. This has pretty pinkish/mauve flowers. It has not been an easy season with extreme cold and then extreme heat. Quite a number of trays of seeds failed to germinate and needed a second try. On the other hand the stock has never looked better, with all systems working well and more particularly the watering, which has been a bugbear ever since we started 30 years ago. Joan Baumber

GRANDPARENTS DAY AT SACRED HEART On Friday 27 June, Sacred Heart Primary School celebrated the Feast of the Sacred Heart and Grandparents Day at the school. Some grandparents travelled from as far away as Melbourne and the Gold Coast. Fr. Michael spoke to the children about blessing and the importance of being blessed.
He encouraged parents and grandparents to bless their children and grandchildren especially at night before sleep. The parents provided a lovely morning tea which was enjoyed by all in the Mercy Centre. Students also provided goods for St Vincent de Paul to help the needy.

When a troubled model falls to her death from a snow-covered Mayfair balcony it is assumed that she has committed suicide. However, her brother has his doubts and calls in a private investigator Cormoran Strike to look into the case. Strike is a war veteran. Wounded both physically and psychologically and his life is in dis-array. The case gives him a financial lifeline, but it comes at a personal cost. The more he delves into the young model’s complex world the darker things get and the closer he gets to terrible danger. This is J.K. Rawlings first foray into adult fiction and I found it to be a reasonable read, a murder mystery that kept you guessing until the end. It won’t go down as one of the best books I have read, not is it one of the worst. Kerry Gardner

Dhurringile Commnity Action Group (DCAG) have met with the Honourable Jeanette Powell on June 16 regarding the H.M. Prison efforts to improve security and the DCAG efforts to ensure the concerned issues of the wider community are met. The DCAG recently met up with H.M. Prison management on Monday June 23 to discuss various issues. Following this meeting, another prisoner escaped on Friday evening, June 27. The DCAG will continue to liaise with Prison Management and will again meet up with the Minister, Ms Jeanette Powell on July 15 at 3pm to discuss this very issue. FAMOUS LAST WORDS I was listening to a quiz on late night radio recently and one of the questions concerned the last words of Admiral Nelson as he lay dying after being shot by a French sharpshooter at the Battle of Trafalgar. His final works were reportedly, “Kiss me Hardy,” (Hardy being the ship’s captain) which seems a little strange as Nelson was reportedly very much a lady’s man. Some historians believe that his final works were actually: “Kismet Hardy,” meaning fate or destiny but were misunderstood as a mondegreen by the people crowded around his death bed although the initial works may have been correct as Hardy did give Nelson a kiss on the cheek. Anyway, it got me thinking about other famous last words. I’ve always admired the inscription on comedian, Spike Milligan’s headstone which reads, “I told you I was ill”. So, here is my top twenty list of other famous last words in no particular order: 1. “Tomorrow, I shall no longer be here.” Nostradamus 2. “Now, now, my good man, this is no time for making enemies.” Voltaire when asked by a priest to renounce Satan. 3. “Put out the bloody cigarette!!” The writer, Saki, to a fellow officer while in a trench during World War One, for fear the smoke would give away their positions. Benefits of desexing your female pet include: prevention of unwanted puppies/kittens, preventing pyometra (infection in the uterus) and phantom pregnancy and reduced risk of mammary tumours, especially when desexed at a younger age. Speying your dog or cat also prevents undesirable behaviour when ‘on heat’ including roaming, vocalisation and unwanted male attention. Female cats are almost constantly on heat during their breeding season unless they are mated and become pregnant. Benefits of desexing your male dog/cat including prevention of testicular tumours and other testosterone related cancers, reducing the rick of prostate problems, as well as hormone related aggression, inappropriate urination and spraying or roaming. Desexing is a routine procedure and, although it is not without risk, it is a safe and effective way of protecting your pet from unnecessary medical and behavioural problems and unwanted puppies and kittens.

The 40 very excited Prep students remained at school after the home bell to enjoy some afternoon tea, games and cooking. The children loved making their own pikelets, popcorn and Milo. They participated in some fun outside games before coming inside for a story. By 5:00pm it was time to go home for a good night’s sleep. Our Grade One students recently remained at school to have their dinner. They were involved in making their own fruit kebabs for afternoon tea as well as preparing vegie sticks, cheese and bread to have with their pasta tea, prepared by parent helpers. The children enjoyed outside rotations before coming inside to play the famous ‘chocolate game’. Each child created their own placemat to put on our long communal table for tea. Ice-cream for sweets was a real treat.

Last week the Grade 2's program involved the children having dinner and a sleepover at school! Again they helped to prepare for their own tea. They enjoyed setting up their mattresses and sleeping bags with girls in the library and boys in a classroom. After getting a pretty good night’s sleep the children enjoyed a Milo prepared by the teachers. Later they went for a walk around Lake Bartlett and played board games with their grade 1 friends. They made their own scones and pikelets for morning tea. By 1:00pm the children were ready to head home to catch up on some sleep! We very much appreciated the support given by parents in assisting with our junior camping program. Next term our grade 5/6 students will experience a three day adventure camp to Angelsea. The grade 3 and 4 students will have their camp to Candlebark (Healesville) later in the year.

AUGUST, THE NEWEST MONTH Having been born in July, I’d always considered it to be the most important month, particularly as it was named in honour of Julius Caesar, the great Roman general, who incidentally, also created the Julian calendar. There are some who disagree (a small minority) and who argue the case for August and in order to understand why, we need to have a look at the original Roman calendar which has been attributed to Romulus, the founder of Rome around 753BC. The Romulus calendar consisted of ten months with the spring equinox in the first month. Many of the months were named based on their position in the calendar. September comes from the Latin septem meaning seven, October from oct meaning eight, November from novum meaning nine and December from decem meaning ten. The regular calendar year consisted of 304 days with the winter days after the end of December and before the beginning of the following March, which contained the spring equinox, not being assigned to any month. This was obviously unworkable so the calendar was reformed around 713BC by Numa Pompilius and two new months, Januarius and Februarius were added at the start of the calendar to account for the 51 previously unallocated winter days. Unfortunately, the Numa calendar gradually degenerated into a chaotic embarrassment as the months began to drift wildly across the seasons. Julius Caesar decided to reform the calendar once again and had the previously named month of Quintilis (which meant five in Latin), renamed July by the Roman senate in honour of his achievement. The new Julian
calendar went into effect in 45BC. After Julius Caesar’s grandnephew, Augustus, defeated Marc Antony and Cleopatra and became emperor of Rome, the senate decided that he too should have a month named after him. The month Sextillus (Latin for six, even though it was now the eighth month) was chosen. Under the Julian calendar, the months alternated evenly between 30 and 31 days (with the exception of February which had 29), which meant that August was 30 days long. However, since July had 31 days, the senate decreed that August should have the same number to prevent anyone from claiming that Emperor Augustus had been saddled with an inferior month. An additional day was therefore taken from February which was reduced to 28 days. However, this now meant that July, August and September had 31 days and so to avoid three long months in a row, the lengths of the last four months were switched around. The reformation due to August has resulted in a calendar which is very close to the one we currently use. Among Roman emperors, only Julius and Augustus have months named after them although several later rulers also tried to make changes. Claudius renamed May after himself and Nero renamed April to Neronius. However, neither of these names remained once each of these emperors died, with the calendar reverting back to the original names of the month. The Julian calendar, while quite accurate, erred from the real solar calendar by 11 ½ minutes a year. After centuries, though, even a small inaccuracy like this adds up and by the sixteenth century it had put the
Julian calendar behind the solar one by 10 days. In 1582, Pope Gregory XIII ordered the advancement of the calendar by 10 days and introduced a new corrective device to curb further error. Century years such as 1700 or 1800 would no longer be counted as leap years, unless they were (like 1600 or 2000) divisible by 400. So which is the greatest month? I think it’s rather obvious. KYABRAM P-12 COLLEGE EXCELS AGAIN! Kyabram P-12 College again competed in the Echuca-Moama Apex debating competition with teams being entered in both the junior and senior divisions. Both teams performed admirably in the preliminary rounds of the debates and won through to the penultimate debates on June 10, a feat made even more impressive for the junior team due to the fact it was their first ever debate. The night of the finals the junior team came up against a quite experienced St. Joseph’s of Echuca team and were unfortunately pipped at the post for the final. The speakers of the team; Aaron Kay, Jasmine Fleming and Jake Plumb all performed well and were supported throughout and in their preparation by Natalie Zonnerveld, Dakoda Emery, Sharmayne John, Lilly Holden and mentored by Lauren Kightly. The senior team of Zoe Hayes, Brittany Gillie and Corintha Walkeden were able to capitalise upon their experience and receive the Cootes family perpetual trophy as winners of the competition. In doing so they were able to successfully argue against Echuca College that the aged pension age of Australians should be raised to 70. Through doing this all of the girls spoke exceptionally well and epitomised the values that the College is based upon. Tatura Amateur Basketball Association is gearing up for its spring season. And to start the season off we are planning a promotion and registration night on Wednesday July 30th. Prospective players are invited to come and spend time on court with Shepparton Gators Big V players Matt Bartlett, JL and Nicholas Dodd. The night will involve some skills and drills where kids can participate, and some demonstration of the shooting and dunking skills of the Big V Men. Tatura Basketball does things a bit differently to most basketball competitions. We grade players on ability as well as age, boys and girls play in the same teams and considerable time is spent grading teams to make an even competition. We play competition Monday and Wednesday nights, and have Aussie Hoops on Thursdays. We also run a representative squad, with Tatura teams competing in tournaments. Some of our more skilled junior players also play rep basketball for Shepparton Gators, returning to play for Tatura in alternate tournaments. We encourage participation in Basketball Vic Country’s development programmes and currently have players participating in the Academy and State Performance Programmes. We aim to provide enjoyable basketball for all, with the opportunities to challenge each player’s abilities, and competitive games each week. We are fortunate in that we have the opportunity to grade players on their ability, and set our teams so they are even. So if you love your sport come and play basketball in Tatura. CINDERELLA AT TATURA PRIMARY SCHOOL At the end of Term 2 the students of Tatura Primary School attended a fabulous production of Cinderella. This modern day version of a classic fairytale enthralled the students and delighted the staff. Some comments of the students: Emre Coskum, Grade 2 The Cinderella show was hilarious! It was better than the movie. The evil stepmother was a boy. Their costumes were crazy, they were wearing funny wigs. My favourite part was when the two ugly step-sisters were taking selfies. You would think this show is so funny. Cassidy Parker, Grade 2 The Cinderella show was hilarious! But it was not a normal Cinderella story, it was mixed with the 21st Century. My favourite character was Baldric, the Prince’s helper.
The reason I liked Baldric was because he was funny and lonely. One of the ugly step-sisters was called Courtney and the other step-sister was Chloe. And as for the evil step-mother, she was sores. Every time she called Cinderella it sounded terrible! But a good thing about the show was that there were songs I knew. Hannah Newman, Grade 2 The Cinderella show was better than the movie! The funniest part was when the fairy godmother said, "You nearly flew the knickers off me”. My favourite character was the green ugly step-sister because she had a really funny voice. They had songs on that we knew, like ‘Fancy’, ‘Birthday’, ‘Gangnem Style’ and ‘Holding out for a hero’. You would think this is hilarious!

AUSTRALIA DAY 2015 The Tatura and District Australia Day Committee recently held their AGM. We welcomed several new members and are looking forward to their involvement. We regretfully accepted resignations from Glenda and Bruce McLeod who have been on the committee for a number of years. Happily they will still continue to be involved on the day.

The meeting held on May 22 was a really interesting one, beginning with our popular member Adrian Barry telling us of his life in the police force, as the member behind the badge. Adrian moved to Melbourne from Tatura and graduated from the Police Depot, he then went to Russell Street. He transferred to Fitzroy and then to Wangaratta. His career covered a variety of police duties as he was in the country areas. When in Warrnambool a Chinese ‘mother’ ship radioed in because a crewman had been injured. It was extremely rough weather and Adrian had to accompany a Doctor and nurse to go to his aid. The story was a fascinating one and it showed the diversity of police involvement. He was a member of the CIB in the crime cars unit and also a Crime Scene Examiner involved in the Tynong North Murders which remains a mystery to this day. His rank on leaving the force was Detective Senior Sergeant, in Charge of Firearms Identification and Tool Mark Section of the Forensic Science Laboratory. Adrian is a wonderful speaker with an amazing memory and the members are always enthralled by the stories of his life in the police force. The guest speaker was Barry Steggall of Mt Martha. He is a member of the Mornington Peninsula Probus Club – Men Only – who have formed many groups in their club which cover all interests. Barry said, “Probus Clubs are the greatest clubs for retired people to attend and there is no need to spend time alone. Come along and enjoy the company and other interests.” Thank you Barry for a very informative talk. Jean Golding, in charge of ‘Afternoon Delights’, (along with Ev Leahy) told the members that Noel Coward and Cole Porter’s show, held on July 17, was a marvellous success. SACRED HEART'S 5/6 CAMP IN HARRIETVILLE 2014 On the 28th of May 2014 the 5/6 students of Sacred Heart went to Harrietville for their yearly camp. On Wednesday morning we left at 8:00. On the way to Harrietville we went to Ned Kelly's Last Stand in Glenrowan. We went through the theatre production that was really well created. ‘It was a very entertaining experience!’ Tess Mutimer. ‘It was good but when the bag nearly fell on my head it scared me!’ Cameron When we left Ned Kelly’s Last Stand we headed straight to Harrietville. When we arrived at the Feathertop Chalet we took out bags off the bus and went to an eating area. We ate lunch that we had prepared. After lunch we went out for free time mainly to stretch our legs and for a bit of exercise. After Free Time we went out to the activities. One of the activities was Water Ecology. In water ecology we went out to the pond and searched for bugs and our instructor when we got back, gave us all a magnifying glass or a special tool to zoom in the bug so you can see which bug it is. Then we went to the river with massive nets and again scooped for bugs and went back to ‘Bug HG’ as some people called it and again looked at the bugs. ‘It was interesting finding heaps of different bugs and especially when I caught a rock.’ Deakin ‘I thought that water ecology was a little boring but it was also interesting because you got to see what type of animals lived in the river.’ Teah After an hour we moved on to our next activity. We went to the local Gold Museum in Harrietville. The river level was too high for us to go Gold Panning so we went through the Gold Museum and it was really interesting. Personally I thought that we needed more time at the museum. ‘It was very interesting and had lots of factual information.’ Xavier After we settled into our room and after we ate dinner we went to the swimming pool. We played a few games of water polo. That was really fun and we got to go in different teams and we got to learn more about each other, Gillian was the best water polo coach and umpire we have ever had! The next day we went bike riding. We were lucky with the weather because the sun was out and it didn’t rain but the ground was still we from the amount of rain from the days previous to when we arrived. We rode through the river and we got drenched but it was really fun and it wasn’t just you that got wet. It was super and just watching your friends’ faces as they rode through the river and as they fell off brought a smile to your face!
‘It was fun and very muddy.’ Daiski When we did archer after bike riding it was really fun and all you could hear was laughter. Seeing your friends and everyone else smiling and trying to aim for the bullseye and some completely missed, but it didn’t matter everyone treated you the same! ‘It was challenging actually getting something on the board because it was too far away for my liking.' AWARD SEEKING BUILDING OPEN FOR LEARNING Last June 6 much of the world commemorated an event which seventy years earlier, altered the course of history. Here in Tatura, on the same date, the Catholic Education’s Sacred Heart School took the keys to a newly constructed ‘Senior Learning Space’; a building that will enhance the level of learning for the school for many years to come. Completely self-funded from within the Catholic Church, the idea for this modern state-of-the-art education facility – especially built for grades five and six, came from initial discussions and ideas co-ordinated by the principal, Trish Miller. The architects were quick to empathise with the wishes of the school and designed a building that at 275sqm, is a blend of Heritage-advised and aesthetically blended materials specially selected to fit in with existing structures. Sitting east-west in the quadrangle that makes up the hard surface play area, its see-through design completes the enclosure. Materials used in the construction include a blend of natural Australian timbers, coloured corrugated iron and brick face that blends with the existing brickwork. But it’s the simplicity and practicality of the north-facing rooms that provide a learning curve, not only for the pupils, but for those visiting for the first time. Equipped with the latest electronic teaching aids including an amphitheatre, there are both spacious but compact group-learning areas as well as personal nooks giving suggested privacy for quieter learning times. “The building is also designed for other outside purposes, such as groups wishing to use its video conference facilities or for meetings.” The principal, Trish Miller said. Dennis Young of Diverse Builders, the Numurkah company responsible for the building contract had his share of construction headaches. “Our site-supervisor, Mal Dohnt was confronted right from day one with the unique internal layout and the number of different roof profiles,” he said adding, “all tradesmen on the job were very professional. That’s so important with kids close by. “Everyone involved over the last six months worked very closely with the architect and Trish to create a seamless build. It’s a building the school can be proud of,” he said. The Builders intend to enter their work in next year’s Master Builders Regional Building Award in the category of ‘Excellence in Construction of Commercial Buildings under $1 Million’. Principal Trish Miller said, “We are all so proud of this addition to our school. It’s a statement to the commitment we have to providing primary education, long into the future for our ever-growing community. Pupil numbers are expected to increase next year. This new building is best placed to cater for the range of needs in a very modern and innovative way.” There will be an official opening of the new building on Friday, August 1 at 10.30am with a service by Father Michael. At Tatura State Primary School, children who bring mobiles to school – whose parents have first obtained permission from the Principal, must sign them in when arriving at the school. “Allowing a child to have a mobile phone is left to the parents.” Principal Jan Lloyd said. “They know their children, basing their decision on what is best for them and by setting their own boundaries around phone use and acceptable etiquette. Having a mobile phone is mostly a safety thing, or for communicating over pick-up times for example.” The school is also aware of the need to provide safe usage lessons to support students around social media issues. To allow a primary school child the use of a personal mobile phone is a difficult decision to make for any parent. Do the benefits outweigh the chance of harmful misuse? TREATED RECYCLED WATER TO BE RELEASED INTO THE MOSQUITO DRAIN AT TATURA Treated water from the Goulburn Valley Water (GVW) Wastewater Management Facility (WMF) in Tatura will be routinely released into the Goulburn Murray Water (GMW) Mosquito Depression Drain over the next 16 weeks. GVW District Manager, Mr Darren Sharman, said the decision was made due to the early Autumn rainfall reducing the irrigation season. “After the April rainfall and the associated decline in irrigation needs, the treatment facility has reached its capacity,” Mr Sharman said. “GVW has therefore commenced discharging the excess water into the Mosquito Depression Drain.” The water being discharged has been fully treated and meets Environment Protection Authority (EPA) standards. “Our EPA licence allows for discharge in very wet years, so due to this year’s circumstances GVW is permitted to release surplus water,” Mr Sharman said. “In line with the reuse guidelines the water is not suitable for stock use.” The Tatura facility caters for over 1,800 residential customers and three major food processing industries. “With a total of 13 storage lagoons the WMF holds almost 940 million litres, and the entire treatment process takes around eight months from start to finish,” Mr Sharman said. “Of the 1,800 million litres treated in the past year, 45% has been used to irrigate dairy and cropping properties adjacent to the facility.” The water in the Mosquito Depression Drain, which eventually discharges into the lower Deakin Drain, may be of poor quality and GMW recommends that people avoid direct skin contact with the water. RODNEY CWA This month I want to talk about being a member of CWA. Among our membership it is well known that I’m not a great cook (my scones have been described as heavy) I love handicrafts, I have an unusual sense of humour and I’m not afraid to be part of a group with so much to offer. As a ‘new’ member of the wider Tatura Community, Rodney Branch of CWA has welcomed me into their group, trusted me with being their secretary and offered friendship enabling me to feel more connected. My family moved down from Sydney some eight years ago for my husband’s work, fell in love with the area and yes we bought the farm. You don’t have to have any particular skills to be a valuable member of CWA, just a generous heart and willing spirit as the Rodney CWA members and
indeed most other CWA ladies that I’ve met have shown me. So come along to one of our meetings and I’m sure you’ll want to come again. Some of the projects that we are working towards this year include: Raising funds for Victory Hall, Knitting clothes for premature babies both here and in East Timor, supporting communities in East Timor to become self sufficient, supporting local charities through donation, producing trauma dolls for hospitals, supporting women’s refuges. HIGHLIGHTS AND ACHIEVEMENTS IN CUSSEN PARK It’s been an eventful 18 months for the Cussen Park Advisory Committee, with a number of important achievements, challenges and activities to highlight. Since its appointment at the end of 2012 the committee has overseen the installation of new signage in Cussen Park; and had provided advice on managing water levels, the construction of a new culvert on Undera Rd and, more recently, the installation of several new regulating structures to enhance flow through the park’s wetlands. The committee has continued to provide strategic advice to Council about planning and future land use around Cussen Park to ensure its natural beauty is preserved for the people of Tatura to enjoy for many years to come. There have been a number of working bees to plant new seedlings which, despite some challenges with vandalism, continue to grow and thrive. Cussen Park Advisory Committee has also supported successful community events such as the annual Carp Fishing Competition, which helps reduce the impact of European Carp in the park’s wetlands. The past year has seen the park become an increasingly important educational resource, and the committee has been pleased to assist Sacred Heart Primary School students in understanding more about the park and the wonderful plants and animals that call Cussen Park home. However the stand out event during the past year was the 20 year anniversary event held in October last year, which was a day filled with fantastic community activities celebrating how far Cussen Park has progressed since the early 1900s. The commitment and dedication by volunteers and supporters to develop the park to be the icon that Tatura enjoys today, was given special acknowledgment by Mayor Cr Jenny Houlihan. I’d like to thank Greater Shepparton City Council for the invaluable and expert work of its staff to manage and maintain the park. This important work continues rain, hail or shine; whether it’s spraying weeds, mowing grass or repairing structures, and is vital to the health of Cussen Park. It’s also important to acknowledge the community volunteers who look after the park and spend many hours watering, checking for weeds, picking up rubbish and even keep a careful eye out for misuse of the park. Finally I’d like to acknowledge my fellow committee members, for their continued hard work, dedication and commitment to ensuring Cussen Park remains a vibrant park for people well into the future. On behalf of the Cussen Park Advisory Committee I look forward to continuing to work to support and preserve one of the Tatura community's most important assets. PETER’S PONDERINGS Have you ever entered a public space and felt overwhelmed by the multitude of signs and notices attached to just about every wall and post? Some might be quite formal while others may have quite detailed instruction. Then there are likely to be ones well beyond their ‘use by date’, duplicates, some saying the same thing in different ways, some that are irrelevant to the usual people who pass that way and yet others which are highly useful. Where should we look first, what is important for me at this time, where should I go and who is the right person to speak to in the midst of all the signage? What I really prefer in such a situation is a welcoming person, someone to come with me to kindly show the way; not just pointing me to a sign or giving me a seemingly complex set of direction for where I need to go or what I should do to meet my appointed needs. Finding the way for our life generally can be much the same experience. There are so many signs vying for our attention and allegiance that it is easy to be overwhelmed and settle for something less than what is available for us. What I have found in the midst of this possible confusion in life is that there is a welcoming person and he says to us that he is the way and the truth and the life. He also says that no one comes to be with the creator God except through him. That person is Jesus Christ and he welcomes us to be solidly connected to him, to learn from him as we go; for he is gentle and humble in heart, and as we faithfully walk along with him, we will find rest for our souls. I have also come to see that there are quite a number of other people around who have accepted the welcome to follow Jesus and are keen to help others in this direction.

A BOWEL CANCER SCREENING TEST COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE Every year thousands of Australians die of bowel cancer. It is important that people take the time to get a screening test that could potentially save their lives. 3,999 Australians die each year from bowel cancer. Federal Member for Murray, Dr Sharman Stone said bowel cancer is one of the most frequently diagnosed cancers in Australia. The earlier the diagnosis the greater the chances of recovery. “The Australian Government can forward a free bowel cancer screening test kit by mail to Australian aged 50, 55, 60 and 65. It was very disappointing that only a third of the one million people sent a reminder to do this test, did in fact return the completed test for analysis, according to the latest National Bowel Cancer Screening Program monitoring report 2013-12,” Dr Sharman Stone said. “Over 14,500 Australians are diagnosed with bowel cancer every year. This is an alarming statistic. This easy and effective screening test, which can be completed in the privacy of your own home, can save up to 500 Australian lives a year. “I urge everyone aged over 50 to talk to their GP and discuss taking a screening test for bowel cancer. It could save their life”. The brothers have been running the business for five years and were previously working there with their father for over twenty years. Daniel in receiving the donation said it would be put towards more concreting work around their shed yard. TATURA HOSPITAL DONATION The Tatura Community Op Shop recently gave out a donation to the Tatura Hospital and Parkvilla Aged Care at their Annual Hospital Sunday event. The cheque for $2000 was presented to Ray Rokar of the Hospitals Advisory Committee by Neville Crow from the Tatura Community Op Shop. Ray was very pleased to receive the donation on the day. Neville said “It is great to be able to support a wonderful community asset in this way. The great support from our community with lots of donated goods has enabled the Op Shop team to be able to do this.” The Tatura Community Op Shop is always wanting good saleable items which can be picked up or dropped off to the shop at 177 Hogan St. To arrange a pick up please ring 5824 3059.
