THE WATER TOWER MURAL FROM A ROTARY PERSPECTIVE The unveiling of the Mural on the water tower in Tatura took place on Sunday 27th June. I felt honoured to be invited to sit in the marquee reserved for special guests. The one thing I noticed above all else was the unpretentiousness of the speakers. First there was Robert Mathieson, past President of the RSL. Bob is such a down to earth guy who shoots straight from the heart. Bob spoke of how, when they were short of the required funds, the Rotary Club of Tatura stepped up to the plate and the army blanket was sent up the street and the funds were raised immediately. Then there was former politician Jeanette Powell, who can only be described as a lovely lady with an amazing welcoming smile. Jeanette spoke of her involement in this mural since 2014, along with the late Tim Fisher in securing Government funding for the project and next there was the great- grand son of Sir john Monash, Michael Bennett, whose pride and respect for his great grand father was so obvious in his speech. Michael talked about Sir John’s life story and achievements and his involement in Rotary in Melbourne 100 years ago. The Rotary club of Tatura has for many years been a force for good in our town.

The rotary wheel emblem has been put on the information display board in recognition of Rotary’s involvement in this project. The Rotary emblem was first created just after the formation of the first Rotary club, established by 3 men in America in 1905 by a lawyer named Paul Harris.

Rotary now has over 23,000 clubs through out the world. The Emblem was to be a wheel to convey movement. I reflected on this cog wheel that hasn’t changed since the beginning of Rotary, with its 6 spokes, keyway and 24 cogs, and as I looked around at the local people gathered here for this unveiling I saw how this cog wheel represents our town.

Each of us is like a cog on the wheel, it doesn’t matter if you are the Lord Mayor of Tatura or a vagrant walking down the main street on a lonely Sunday night, each cog is exactly the same as the next, no bigger or no smaller and that each one is vital in the movement of that wheel.

When we are feeling a bit down all we have to do is think of that wheel and how important each of us are to the smooth running of that wheel.

Looking around, I noticed the pride that showed on the faces of the crowd as the board was unveiled. What these people had achieved made me feel proud of our little town, and even more proud, being a Rotarian.

SIR JOHN MONASH – NOT JUST A SOLDIER John Monash was born in West Melbourne on 27 June 1865 to GermanPolish Jewish parents. After several years at school in Richmond, Melbourne his family moved to Jerilderie, New South Wales. William Elliott, a teacher at the Public School there, advised his family to move back to Melbourne and for John to further his education there as he had taught him all he could.

John enrolled in Scotch College and at 16, in his final year of school he was dux in mathematics and modern languages and equal dux of the school. After completing school, John enrolled in arts and engineering at the University of Melbourne however he had to stop his studies after two years due to financial hardship. However, he still wanted to study and by the age of 30, he had gained his Bachelor of Arts and a Masters in Science (Civil Engineering) and had qualified as a municipal surveyor, an engineer of water supply and a patent attorney.

John Monash would go on to become a Doctor of Laws (Melb), Doctor of Engineering (Melb), Doctor of Civil Law (Oxford) and Doctor of Laws (Cambridge).

In 1884, at the age of 19, John Monash joined the newly formed University Company, D Company, 4th Battalion, Victorian Rifles and gradually moved up the ranks.

During the worst of the depression of the 1890s, Sir John Monash started with the Harbor Trust, an organisation that aimed to improve access for shipping to Melbourne. While working at the trust, he also studied part time.

Monash soon became one of Australia's foremost experts in reinforced concrete for bridges, railways and other large construction projects.

Tatura’s water tower, built in 1912, is one of the projects he designed.

In 1914, the First World War broke out. He was among the first under fire at Gallipoli and was the only Australian brigade commander among the original troops not killed or evacuated as wounded.

By 1918, he was in charge of the entire Australian Corps. In this same year King George V knighted him on the battlefield for his role in the Battle of Hamel Hill.

After the First World War, he returned to engineering and became Chairman of Victoria's new State Electricity Commission. By 1930 the S.E.C. grid covered the State and the commission was established as a highly successful state enterprise.

In his last years, he supervised construction of Melbourne's Shrine of Remembrance and oversaw the public appeal for funds. He rewrote the inscription planned for the west wall.

He achieved greatness essentially as an administrator, by cultivating the ordinary qualities such as memory, concentration, stability and common sense, allied with temperamental capacity to work harmoniously with colleagues. He had the gift of being able instantaneously to turn from one task to the next. After his death in 1931, his state funeral, with crowds of at least 250,000, was probably the largest in Australia to that time; he was buried in Brighton cemetery with Jewish rites.

TATURA RSL Over 100 people gathered at the Tatura water tower for the official unveiling of the mural. It was the culmination of many years hard work by members of the Tatura RSL, Bob Mathieson in particular, and the Rotary Club of Tatura who stepped up when additional funds were needed. The Tatura RSL first formed the idea of a mural of Gen. Sir John Monash in 2014 however the plan was put on hold. In 2018 the idea was again raised and this time obstacles were overcome and the mural was completed in June 2021.

The design features Gen. Sir John Monash on one side and a waterfall of Flanders red poppies on the other. The mural artists were Cam Scale and Andrew Davis.

In other news the sign for the entrance to the Private Robert Mactier VC Memorial Gardens has been installed.

There is still more to do.

UNITING CHURCH It’s been a busy and eventful month for the good folk of the Tatura Uniting Church.

Final Service at Thomson Street The congregation held a bittersweet final service at its original building on Sunday, July 4 with the church full with current and former members, including former ministers of the church. The service was a fond farewell to the church and halls at Thomson St, Tatura For many, the church has been the site of countless treasured memories.

Current minister, Rev Brian Spencer said, “We invited back past members and ministers. Some who could not attend in person due to health, distance and Covid travel restrictions joined us on Zoom. This church has been a sacred place. It has been a place of worship and a centre for mission, and it still carries commitment of those who made its building possible.

Since 1959 it has offered in faith the Word and Sacrament of the Body of Christ. It breathes with the prayers of several generations.”

Gordon and Helen Newton who were the first couple married in the church 60 years ago and now live in Murchison were there to shed a tear and walk down the aisle one more time.

But Reverend Spencer said a smaller more versatile building was needed.

"It was built in the 60s when lots of kids were running around and you had badminton and table tennis and youth groups," he said. “It has served us well, but the new premises are much better suited to the needs of our church now and in the future.”

Opening Service – Olive and Vine Tatura The following Sunday (July 11th) saw the first service in the “Olive and Vine”, which is the new name the church has chosen for the former Gallery Café. The theme for the day was “New Beginnings and Second Chances.” The new church was as full as Covid restrictions allow, with visitors from neighbouring churches and the wider region joining the congregation for a bright and thoughtful service.

Congregation secretary, Mrs Beryl Cross said, “It’s been a busy week getting the worship space ready, but we think it looks great and conducive

to being a place for reflection, prayer and fellowship. It’s a new beginning for Tatura Uniting Church.”

The congregation is now exploring how to best use the café and commercial kitchen facilities. Rev. Spencer said the cafe would continue the Christian tradition of hospitality. He said the congregation was already in discussions with the community about how it could be used more broadly for functions and events. "We'd certainly want to have it open to the community," he said. “While the move has been a bold decision, it was embraced by the congregation and has attracted a lot of attention and positive comment from the wider church and community.”

"We don't want to be spending our time maintaining an aging building," he said. "We want to be the church. We want to be a place of hope and second chances for people now and into the future."

FEAST OF THE SACRED HEART On June 11th we celebrated Feast of the Sacred Heart. This is the Feast of The Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. We remember divine love and compassion of the heart of Jesus towards all humanity. Our Parish and School, which were developed in the late 19th Century, are dedicated in the praise and honour of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. This was a wonderful day with a Liturgy led by Fr John Paul and the 5/6s.

The Mini Vinnies team was commissioned and presented with their certificate and badges. The Mini Vinnies and Social Justice team launched the St Vincent De Paul Winter appeal. Each classroom was asked to bring in non-perishable items to donate.

To celebrate our Feast day classes participated in tabloid sports, we had sack races, bocce, quoits, bowling and many other tabloid sports for all children. It was fantastic to see children laughing and having so much fun. We were very grateful and thankful for the beautiful weather. Our grade five and six students were an excellent example of leaders and promoted respect, responsibility and resilience all day long.

Our day ended with a fantastic display of talent. Our choir sung beautifully and performed to our audience, followed by our incredible Sacred Heart Rock Band performance! We thank Mr. Hooper and Mrs. Nihill for their organisation and preparation. It was so entertaining and enjoyable! We rocked along all afternoon.

RODNEY BRANCH CWA Members travelled to the Murchison Museum for our July meeting, museum members Helen and Janet were there to welcome us. We held a quick meeting beforehand and then toured the Museum. Helen Newton spoke on the Dhurringile Mansion and her memories of growing up there as a child, living in the renovated stables which were turned into a home for her family. The mansion had 68 rooms and was occupied by German Officers during WW11, afterwards it was purchased by the Presbyterian Church and was used as a boy’s home for Scottish orphans following the war, the current use is that of a prison. Some members then adjourned to the Bakery for a cuppa and cake before returning home.

Our August meeting will be held in the club rooms of The Tatura Bowling Club, and we look forward to meeting there as this will be the venue for our future meetings. Competition for the month will be CWA memorabilia. Meetings start at 1.30 pm.

The State Conference and AGM which was cancelled due to the last COVID lockdown was rescheduled as a Zoom Conference last week.

Our member Lyn Trezise completed her term as one of the State Vice Presidents and is to be commended for all the work she has done on behalf of CWA at a State level, it is near enough to having a full-time job with the time commitment needed. Janette Mason has also been part of the Board of CWA at State level and her expertise certainly has been appreciated. Janette is also part of the Catering Committee which runs the CWA dining room at the Royal Melbourne Show which is due to go ahead this year thankfully.

Our Junior branch decorated small pots with pouring paint which will be finished off at their next meeting adding plants and coloured stones.

The girls also decorated caps with paint.

They continue to be very eager in learning new crafts and love to take on the role of leading the meeting and taking the minutes. The girls look forward to entering their cooking, craft and photography in the annual Goulburn Valley Group Exhibition on 11th and 12th September which will be held in Victory Hall in Tatura. This is open to the public on the Sunday and more details will be available closer to the time.

Energy Efficiency in Our Buildings Improving energy efficiency in our buildings is an important part of reducing emissions while also reducing energy costs.

As residents and business owners, we pay for the energy we consume (either electricity or gas), and the less energy efficient our buildings, the more energy we need to purchase to keep them comfortable inside (called the thermal comfort).

Here in Tatura, we experience scorching summer heat in summer, and freezing, frosty nights during winter, so ideally our buildings (and surrounding landscapes) would be designed and built to insulate us from these extremes in temperature. But unfortunately many buildings, particularly older buildings, have little or no insulation, are poorly designed to keep heat in or out (depending on the season), and have gaps allowing outside air to enter the house. Some new houses sacrifice energy efficient design and construction to achieve a cheaper build price, but this decision costs the owner more over the long term to keep the house at a comfortable temperature.

Some energy efficiency works may cost extra up front (such as installing insulation), but save you money in the long term, while others cost you nothing at all (such as drawing curtains to let in or keep out the sun). The pay-back period is the time it will take to pay off the initial cost through energy savings, and this can often be easily calculated.

There are also a number of grants and programs that are available to home owners and businesses to help them switch to energy efficient appliances, and improve building energy efficiency and thermal comfort. ROTARY CLUB OF TATURA The Rotary Club of Tatura conducted its change over night on Wednesday 30 June 2021.

There were 30 members and guests who attended the low key event at the Top Pub, sharing a meal and lots of fellowship. There was some light musical entertainment, supplied by our Bruce Anderson Scholarship awardee, Bodhi Hawken. President Rhonda had everyone in stiches of laughter with a cd titled “Too Long in the Bush”. The President and committee members are all going around for a 2nd term this year, as with covid playing havoc last year with our meetings and projects, not much could be achieved. We did manage to get in a few face to face dinner meetings, complete a couple of projects and we still managed to distributed $15,000 to local organisations and rotary projects world wide.

FIREARMS AMNESTY LAUNCHES NATIONALLY Victorians are being urged to hand in any unwanted, unregistered or illegal firearms as part of a national amnesty which commenced on the 1 July, 2021.

The permanent national firearms amnesty, an Australian first, is imploring members of the public to anonymously surrender any illegal or unregistered firearms, parts or ammunition in their possession without fear of prosecution.

In Victoria, anyone in possession of illegal or unregistered firearms, parts or ammunition is strongly advised to surrender these to their nearest licensed firearm dealers in the first instance.

The licensed firearms dealers will arrange destruction of these items upon surrender, or if the individual is appropriately licensed, they may be able to register unregistered firearms.

Victoria Police is strongly advising members of the public not to surrender any firearms to police stations during the amnesty.

However, if it’s impractical for someone to surrender at their nearest licensed firearm dealer, they must call their local station to organise the conditions surrounding the surrender of the firearm or associated item ahead of any attendance at a station.

Victoria Police is encouraging the public to use the national firearms amnesty as an opportunity to help reduce the availability of unregistered firearms and illegal weapons to those who clearly do no not want them for lawful purposes.

Following the success of the 2017 national firearms amnesty, in November 2019 State and Territory Ministers agreed to the introduction of a permanent national firearms amnesty.

The introduction of the permanent amnesty was delayed by the impacts of coronavirus before its launch today.

Crime Stoppers Victoria is running a national campaign to support the amnesty – ‘No more unregistered firearms; that’s our aim. Hand them in.’

As part of the campaign, Victoria Police will be joining Crime Stoppers Victoria at a number of community engagement events across the state in coming months.

HARSTON PRIMARY SCHOOL The end of Term 2 was a busy one. Our Blue Sky dance incursion was enjoyed by all even though we had to do it by zoom due to Covid restrictions. The students enjoyed creating their own dance. Our dance program started again today and we look forward to another incursion later in the term.

We said farewell to Mrs H as she retired after many years at Harston PS. We thank her for all she did for our school and families and wish her well in her retirement.

We would like to thank the Kyabram Club for their kind donation of $600 and look forward to members of the Kyabram Club attending our school later in the term to see what we do.

TATURA LIONS 50th ANNIVERSARY Tatura Lions are presently in the planning stages for a formal evening to commemorate 50 years of service to our local community, from the original charter of the Lions Club of Tatura on the 1st November 1971.

TATURA MUSEUM MUSINGS Our Paul Mezulianik exhibition has now closed with the sketches packed ready for transit to the State Library of NSW. The Exhibition Area has been transformed to a large display of art works contributed by members of the Tatura Creative Artists Group. More than 14 artisans of the group are displaying their talents with many on sale to eager viewers. The exhibition was opened on Friday 16th July and will remain on show till the 12th September.

Book sales at the Museum are increasing with Arthur and Lurline Knee’s new book “The Nazi Camp” very popular. This book won the award at the recent Heritage Awards for the ‘Best Researched Local Publication’.

Tatura Museum is one of 11 properties in Tatura covered by the Heritage overlay, to be offered the privilege of having an oval plaque affixed to the building, outlining the history of the building. This is a COGS Heritage Advisory Committee project and will be free to the 74 precipitants in the Greater Shepparton City Council area.

We’re in the middle of winter, the mornings are chilly and the nights are cold. After many years of drought no one’s complaining, the Goulburn Valley is green and lush, for the second winter most farmers have mud, there’s an old saying; “There’s no money in dust but there’s money in mud”.

Due to the cold weather, and a few members recovering from their operations, only a third of our ladies attended the Harston meeting. We did have a quorum for our meeting which is most important.

Mrs. Marilyn Pell received her ten-year service badge presented by the branch President Mrs. Glenys Eberle.

Mrs. Merle Krause celebrated a special 80th Birthday late in June, restricted by Covid border closures, although Merle gave us an insight into how she had a few gatherings with family and friends. As well as receiving a lovely bunch of flowers from our branch, hand delivered by the President Glenys.

Mrs. Margaret Chance presented birthday sprays to Glenys and Mrs. Lucy Harper who both have a Birthday in July.

The Harston CWA members have been busy during these colder months at home working on their Entries for the Goulburn Valley West Group Craft Exhibition which will be held in Tatura at Victory Hall on September 11th for Judging and then on 12th open to the public and serving Devonshire teas.

The CWA State Conference was cancelled on the very day before it was scheduled back in May, due to Covid restrictions throwing all good plans into turmoil. It will now go ahead via zoom on the 23rd July 21, who would have thought back in 1928 that CWA ladies would be doing Zoom Conferencing.

TATURA INDOOR CARPET BOWLS Goulburn Valley Indoor Bias Bowls Association's annual events have been taking place and the Tatura club members have been sweeping all before them taking out the Men's Pairs, Mixed pairs, Men's Triples and were runner-up in the Men's Fours. Keith Smith (S) and Ken Cornell won the GV Pairs convincingly in their final. They combined with Terry Gale to win the GV Triples in a last end five score to get up by 2 shots and with the same threesome plus John Crilly were runners-up in the GV Men's Fours losing by just 2 shots. Smith had a remarkably successful season in GVIBBA events as he was also runner-up in the GV Men's Singles.

The Tatura Club's Men's Championship has concluded in a tightly fought out contest in which Terry Gale and John Crilly were level

on the last end to be played. Gale scored one on the final end to win his first Tatura club's championship 13 shots to 12. He will now go on to compete against other Men's club champions in the Goulburn Valley Indoor Bias Bowls Association.

Outdoor bowls: 60 and Over will commence from 15th September and Tatura Club Coordinator Col Johnson has a list on the club noticeboard for those Tatura and Hill Top members interested in participating. Two teams of 4 players will be entered each week and will play at various clubs throughout the district each Wednesday. A rostering of players will be necessary to share the game experience.

Come to the third Bruce Wilson Memorial Heritage Lecture Navigating heritage: past, present, future Look back 50 years to the 1970s with heritage expert Ms Christine Johnston, as we explore changing ideas about heritage and contemplate its future.

All over the world, places—buildings, sites and even landscapes—are retained and protected because they are seen as ‘heritage’, part of the past that people want to keep.

Heritage places offer us ways to connect to that past, to our own stories and memories, as well as creating an inheritance for the future.

What does our heritage scorecard look like today? And what new directions might shape heritage into the future?

In her lecture, Chris will examine these issues and concepts such as place attachment and differing ideas of heritage value. She will also look at heritage landscapes (‘cultural landscapes’), and intangible heritage such as customs, traditions and practices, as she looks towards the future of heritage.

Chris Johnston is a one of the stars of the heritage world in Australia. She has been one of the nation’s leading heritage figures for decades, at the forefront of heritage discussion and practice, with a long, extremely productive and influential career.

Chris founded Context, Victoria’s foremost heritage consultancy, in 1988, building its national reputation for community-connected projects over nearly 30 years. Chris is now an independent heritage specialist.

It was Chris’ pioneering work that led the heritage world in Australia to accept the heritage value of buildings and places beloved and valued by local communities, not just those that were seen as historic or of architectural interest.

CHICKEN PIE THAT'S A LITTLE DIFFERENT I came across this recipe on the Internet and couldn't imagine how the pastry would work being made with mayonnaise but was pleasantly surprised at how light and tasty it turned out to be. The sauce in the recipe was for tomato but as I don't like that I replaced it with BBQ sauce and REALLY liked it. You choose which you would rather use.

Ingredients: 4 Cups Plain Flour 400g Mayonnaise 1 Teaspoon Baking Powder 500g Shredded Chicken (Cooked) 1 Onion

1 Clove Garlic Black Pepper 1 Cup Sauce (BBQ) 200g Creamed Cheese Method: In a large bowl mix flour, mayonnaise and baking powder. Work into a dough, cut in half and roll out flat. Place one half into a pan.

Fry onion and garlic in a little olive oil. Then mix them and all other ingredients together.

Place this mixture in the crust, place the other half of dough over the top. Glaze with a little egg wash and bake in 180 degree oven for 40 minutes.

PROBUS At our June meeting we heard from President Brian about some of the unusual occurrences he saw in the early hours of the morning in Tatura when he was busy with paper deliveries.

This was followed by a very interesting presentation by our Guest Olwyn Graham of her trip to Madagascar. On June 17th we had nineteen members aboard the bus for our trip to Eldorado. Our first stop was at Glenrowan for morning tea, then on to the Museum at Eldorado, which is in the old school building, where Sue gave us a very interesting talk on

the early school. The school was extended to three rooms over time, and there were 400 plus students at one time. They must have been squashed in like peas in a pod. We then watched a video on the building and working of the Eldorado Dredge, before taking our time to look through the museum at the large collection relating to the mining days, as well as the household articles and clothing of the day. Outside there was a large collection of old machinery. A pleasant walk down to McVey’s Tavern, where we enjoyed a very

satisfying lunch. On then to Sue’s husband’s pottery works. He spoke to us about building the pottery works from home-made bricks, and how they then went on to build their home with bricks from the grounds as well. He had some beautiful pieces of pottery and members had a great time choosing something to take home. Back in the bus for the short trip to the Dredge. It was an amazing structure. Off then for a brief stop at the Cheese Factory at Milawa before a tired group headed for home.

Cath became a member of Girl Guides as a teenager taking on roles in state council, Regional Commissioner for Goulburn Valley, District Commissioner of East Doncaster, Victorian State Advisor, and the challenging role of Lone Guides Australia as well as taking weekly Guides.

“Being a Girl Guide gave them confidence and skills and helped them become useful citizens,” she said.

As well as her service to the Guiding movement has represented the Goulburn Valley branches of Australia Cross in various roles and was a founding member of the GV Branch of the Australian Bone Marrow Donors Registry.

Wilma, like Cath has spent many hours also working for Girl Guides especially for those in need whether it be cooking or many different hand work items, always ready to teach others her many skills

This month at our monthly meeting Wilma presented several large hand knitted beautiful rugs for the Homeless to keep them warm on these freezing cold nights.

Both these women have a sound understanding of the accessibility of Guiding in regional and remote areas.

It’s free and it is a great way for women and girls to try tennis. The club’s coach will be there and it is suitable for women or girls who want to have a hit. You may have played in the past, and know what it is all about, or you may never have played. It doesn’t matter, you will enjoy it. 's Dennis Booth R I A F DINKUM! I have been saying it for two years now that Tatura is going to boom, regardless of the pandemic…or perhaps possibly because of it.

Take a walk down Hogan Street and see how many shops are shut permanently or are for lease and then go for a walk around Shepparton and other places. And certainly, the owners of IGA have shown their confidence in this town with the very imposing edifice going up that hopefully will also create some more new jobs.

Word also has it on the grapevine that the old café/fish n chip shop near the hairdressers and currently as I write this with its windows covered, could be a pizza place. Then we have of course the car wash opened and appearing to do good business.

Well, the answer I think is in the Tatura Community Plan for the future as outlined recently. We already have Northlinks almost sold out, Tatura Waters is into Stage 2 and there are residential plans also in Dhurringile Road, off Pyke Road and other areas. They say Tatura’s population will be about 6,999 by 2036. Don’t you believe it! It will be closer to 10,000!

Only a week or so ago I made contact with an old friend of mine from my days in Darwin.

His name is Phil Parker and he is the founder of Parker Property Group which operates out of the Sunshine Coast. Phil when in Darwin worked as a sales rep for Alfred Grant Real Estate and sold me two blocks in and near Brisbane and which I later sold for a nice return. We discussed where I now lived and it would not surprise me with the rap I gave Tatura that he showed some interest in us. I might add he has done alright for himself, I would have to say he is well and truly a millionaire.

You might question who am I to be so outspoken. Well, the fact is that after Cyclone Tracy in 1974 I was elected to the Darwin City Council as an Alderman (Councillor) and served on several committees. Then in 2012 I was elected as a Councillor on Forbes Shire Council and chaired the Tourism, Heritage and Sports Committees.

So, I am saying what I say here because I love this place and its people and only want what I think is right for it now and in the future.

Agnes sighed as she looked at me, “It feels like forever Merle since we have seen each other.

I know we talk on the phone but to be finally sitting down enjoying each other’s company, well it just feels like so long.”

I kindly reminded Agnes that her memory has been slipping lately and she knew full well that my son has been staying with me while I had some renovations done on the house.

“Oh yes of course,” Agnes nodded at me with a vague look on her face. “So, Simon was down from Melbourne staying with you, now I remember.”

“He most certainly was not Agnes!” I said emphatically.

“But you just said he was Merle.” Agnes had turned up her lips with a perplexed look on her face.

I shook my head in annoyance. “I said he was staying with me but I did not say that he came down from Melbourne. That would be geographically impossible.”

Agnes looked slightly less confused. “Oh, now I see Merle, the Covid thing? Wasn’t he allowed to visit after all?”

“No Agnes it is nothing like that at all, but Melbourne is south of here which means we are north and north is up, only ever up! So Simon came up from Melbourne as planned and stayed over at my house for a few weeks.”

Agnes looked completely baffled and started to stutter on about was he there or not.

“Agnes, yes he did come and stay but Melbourne people come up to us just like we go up to NSW or Qld. It’s just the way the earth is.”

Once again, a vague looked washed over Agnes and she wriggled her head a little from side to side. Shaking her brains into place was what I hoped would be the outcome although it would probably take a far more vigorous shake to do any good if I was being honest about it.

“So Agnes, let me fill you in. We had all of the carpet taken up and the whole house painted.

You should see how it looks now. The new carpet was laid a couple of weeks ago and my house has never looked so clean or fresh. It’s amazing the things you find when you move all of your furniture out of a room too. I don’t know why it took me so long to agree to get this done.

“How did Simon manage on his own Merle?”

“Well, a couple of his friends gave him a hand and Garry also popped in when needed. I think he was really there just for the free feed that came with it, but he did work very hard.”

“Merle, Garry is certainly wonderful, but isn’t he a little too old to be lifting heavy furniture?

I mean he is not a young man and I do worry about his back. I hardly ever get Fred to lift anything anymore.”

“The truth is Agnes, he just pushed and shoved a few things around but he was very useful with his advice. The boys warmed to him so that helped too. He seemed to plan things out very well for the easiest outcome. A bit of a skill really.”

Agnes smiled. “So it sounds like Garry is in with your family Merle. I am delighted to hear that.”

“Why on earth is it so important for me to have a man in my life, Agnes? And as far as being in with my family, moving furniture around and barking out orders is far from my children calling him daddy. Oh you do get carried away Agnes.”

“I would just like to see you happy like Fred and I are, that’s all Merle.”

“Righto, let’s talk about something else then shall we. You were going to fill me in on what you heard Monica McMurtle did last week. I am very interested to know what she is up to now, that silly woman. Then you said Daisy had an accident. So many things to fill me in on Agnes. Let’s make more tea and you can start at the beginning.”

Agnes was almost tripping over herself in her rush to make a fresh pot of tea so we could sit and start our conversation. Why is talking about others so interesting? Can someone please explain? Anyone?

“HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS. STAY THERE LONGER” I would like to introduce myself and my role in the Home Care Services Team in Wangaratta.

My purpose is to provide and educate our community by holding FREE presentations or discussions on the services that may be available through both Commonwealth Home Support (in home services from the council/hospital) and Home Care Packages.

Both of these Government Programs are designed to support older Australians and, in most cases, are free or highly subsidised to those who can least afford them.

GENERATIONS OP SHOP Tatura CFA- SES cheque presentations 2021 Recently Generations Op Shop was able to present financial gifts to two of Tatura’s volunteer groups.

The Tatura CFA unit and Tatura SES unit each received a cheque for $2000 from the op shop.

Generations Op shop manager Neville Crow presented the cheques to Bill Stockdale from the CFA unit. Bill said “the funds would be put towards gravel or paving of some of the outside area of the new CFA building.

We are very thankful for the donation from the op shop.”

Neville also presented a cheque to Brodie Waters from the Tatura SES unit who said “that the funds would be put towards the finishing off, of the training room that they have set up for volunteer training. We are grateful for the cheque and the boost it gives to the unit.”

“The dedication and hard work of all our team at the op shop has made this possible along with all the many donations that the community has given and then presented for resale in the shop. We are always looking for good quality items for the shop. Thank you to all who have supported us with that.” said Neville.

CUBBY NEWS Yet another exciting month has passed here at the Cubby. We have had great interest in our holiday program and are pleased that we can offer this additional service to our community.

The holiday program was jam packed with fun activities including silly dress ups day, pancake day, pizza and cake day, sports day & PJs and movie day.

On silly dress ups day Janenne stole the show with her hilarious upsidedown outfit.

Unfortunately, sports days was a wash out, so activities had to move inside where Theo and Archie entertained us all with their great balloon skills.

For PJs and Movie Day we all snuggled down to watch Peter Rabbit and while the movie was enthralling the popcorn was the real hit.

There are still a few places available for Term 3. We are open Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday 9am until 2pm. Please phone the Community House on 5824 1315 between 9am and 3pm Monday to Friday to enroll.

Set in concrete.

At the vineyard, we’ve had concrete poured. It has been a stressful time. It wasn’t the pouring and trowelling of the concrete itself that was difficult. Skilful and energetic young men had that in hand.

What was difficult is that concrete is so final. It is so set in concrete! And our plans for how the newly concreted shed will be used are so “unconcrete”. Where will the sinks go? Where should the hand-basin go? Where will the electrical power points go? Once those pipes are in the concrete, that’s where they will stay.

If we change our mind, the walls can be moved around, the doorways can be relocated, the lighting can be changed but the drainage pipes and electrical conduit are literally set in concrete, unable to be changed.

People talk about “Buyer’s Remorse”, where once you have bought a particular item, you immediately start having regrets that you didn’t buy a different product, different colour or because you realise you could have bought it cheaper elsewhere.

Let me tell you, ‘Buyer’s Remorse’ is nothing compared to ‘Concreter’s Remorse’. Right now, six of us, with our far from concrete ideas, are dealing with some very concrete realities.

It’s no wonder that people use concrete as a metaphor. They use it to mean real and tangible, as in ‘They provided help in concrete ways.” They use it to mean solid and less

THE GOOD LIFE abstract as in “Give a concrete example.”

They use it to mean certainty or fixed as in “Her plans were set in concrete”.

The concept ‘set in concrete’ is challenged by modern thinking. Flexibility and agility are prized. Being able to “pivot”, to change, to reinvent oneself or a business are highly prized.

To be unwilling to change and to adapt is to be “stuck in concrete” and is viewed negatively.

I grew up in a denomination that had a pretty fixed view of most things. People who were “firm in their faith” were praised. The trouble was this seemed to include being firm about a whole lot of other things that were conflated with what was essential for “good” Christians.

A faith ‘set in concrete’ is a stubborn, eyesclosed, arrogant faith, unwilling to grow or learn. It is a self-righteous and static faith.

A person with faith ‘set in concrete’ believes anything that differs from their viewpoint is dangerous and must be treated as a hostile enemy. I’ve heard some people say that the opposite of faith is not doubt but certainty.

I think I have a very un-concrete faith. I don’t have all the answers, but my faith is ever growing. I am always seeking, learning, humble, and strong. My faith resonates with the words of the Apostle Paul when he wrote that for all our longing for certainty, now what we know of God is like looking though frosted glass.: “For now we see in a glass darkly, but then we will see face to face. Now I know only

in part; then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known.” (1 Cor 13:12) Following Jesus is big. It is something that individual believers, movements and denominations have articulated in many different ways over the centuries.

In the Uniting Church we say that “the church is a pilgrim people, always on the way towards a promised goal. On the way Christ feeds the Church with Word and Sacraments, and it has the gift of the Spirit in order that it may not lose the way.”

We need to continue to learn how to be comfortable with diversity in our communities and in our churches. They say you should set your goals in concrete but your plans in sand.

Be flexible with your strategies but firm on your goals.

I think we could say something similar about faith. Set your faith on the rock, (in concrete), but let your understanding be guided by the Spirit.

Jesus told his disciples that they needed to be committed to him and the Way of love but continue to learn and be open to new truth.

“I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth” John 16:12-13 This is the gospel and it’s good news.

CROSSING THE GOULBURN AT MURCHISON The first means of crossing the river at Murchison, other than swimming, was by means of a punt, a flat-bottomed structure big enough to carry wagons, farm animals and people. An anchored cable system pulled the punt from one side to the other depending on when it was needed. Punts had to be registered and a licence was issued by the Government who set the charges for both people and animals.

The place where the bank was scooped out to allow for the punt to dock is easily seen in the Murchison River Bank Gardens opposite the Bakery and a rock at that point carries a plaque with this inscription: THE MURCHISON PUNT SITE BUILT AND OPERATED BY LUDOVIC MARIE IN 1854 LICENCED BY THE GOVERNOR OF VICTORIA AND REGISTERED AS THE MURCHISON PUNT The licence was issued subject to maximum Rate & Fares charged FOOT PASSENGER – One Shilling CATTLE PER HEAD – Two Pence BULLOCK TEAMS – Seven Shillings HORSE TEAMS – Four Shillings

HORSEMAN – Two Shillings SHEEP PER 100 – Five Shillings First Puntman – THOMAS HAMILTON An enterprising Frenchman, Ludovic Marie was the first proprietor of the punt as he realised the need for a crossing place at Murchison, as it was in a direct line for traffic moving between the goldfields in the north-east at Eldorado and Beechworth, and Bendigo and Ballarat in the south-west. He also built the Punt Hotel directly opposite the place where travellers accessed the punt to provide for their needs in 1854, the year the village of Murchison was proclaimed. This building is now the Supa Valu Centre and the date is boldly visible on the facia above the second storey.

A timber bridge opened in 1871 that replaced the aging punt certainly provided more convenience. The approaches to the punt were slippery when wet and very steep, particularly when the river level was low. It operated irregularly according to demand and sometimes the Puntman was not immediately available. A toll was required to use the punt, and also a toll was demanded for use of the bridge for the first few years.

By the 1930’s the timber bridge was deteriorating and so the current steel span bridge was constructed along-side it. Finally, in 1937, amidst a week of happy celebrations,

the bridge we use now in Murchison was officially opened.

Today, 84 years later, this bridge is somewhat of an icon and readily identifies our township.

The Murchison & District Historical Society has recently had the plaque at the site of the punt crossing place restored. Take a walk through the gardens and have a look at this historic spot; imagine the effort of filing on to the punt, crossing the river herding flocks of sheep or cows, driving heavily laden wagons and teams of horses and negotiating a steep bank on arrival at the other side.

Nowadays, we can whizz across the bridge with no effort at all!

TATURA BASK A GRADE The A grade grand final was fought out between Bulls and Celtics, the two stand-out teams of the Autumn competition. The first half was a tight affair with the lead changing multiple times as each team tried to gain the ascendency. However, the more dominant Celtics attack led by the big bodies of Kelham Tyson (35 points) and Reece Mulvihill (12 points) eventually wore down their opponents despite brilliant all-round games from Jordan O'Neill (15 points) and Jai Bailey (14 points): Celtics 49 to Bulls 37. The Lisa Cullum Medal for the Most Valuable Player of the Grand Final was deservedly awarded to Kelham Tyson.

This was a hard fought game between two evenly matched sides. An early lead by Celtics was gradually worn down by some great teamwork and inside scoring by Heat.

Scores were level with 2 minutes to go, then Heat finally broke away to go out winners by 5 points. A couple of standout performances by Luke Hamilton, Heat (18 points) and Marcus Perry, Celtics (22 points) added to the contest.

The Rijs Family Medal for MVP of the final went to Luke Hamilton for getting it done on both ends of the court in the crucial moments.

TATURA CREATIVE ARTISTS The Tatura Creative Artist group is holding an Art Exhibition at the Tatura Museum. The Exhibition opened on 16 August and will close on 12 September 2021 The Members of the Tatura Creative Artists have chosen Art work for their Exhibition, showing the spectrum of their skills and creativity. The many mediums included are mixed medium, Acrylic, Water colour, Pastel, Textile art using silk paper, gold leaf, and photography. Some paintings which are for sale can be collected immediately. Tatura Creative Artists is an extension of the Rodney Arts Society which had started in 1974. The Inaugural Meeting was held at the Waranga Basin on the 25th November 1974, during a

The business discussed was to enquire from the Council of Adult Education (C.A.E.) in what way the Society could benefit their help. Reusing of a room in the old State School, where Wheel pottery, tutored by Bob Harris, was offered.

In the minutes of an informal Meeting held at Shepparton Gallery in December 1974, the subscriptions were a nominal amount of $2.50 per member. The Head of Department of adult Education centre subsidized six classes.

The Methodist Hall Tatura was also a venue for Rodney Arts painting classes over many years. Other popular classes held were picture framing, spinning, weaving, jewellery making and china painting. The first Exhibition was held in the Anglican Hall 1975. Ian Lynch’s Gallery in Pyke St became a fantastic venue appreciated by all Artists, with opening nights being celebrated within its surrounds. Some 10 years ago the group decided to a name change, registering as the Tatura Creative Artists. This attracted citizens to venture into different fields in the art forms. A friendly atmosphere developed and visiting artists are welcomed to run workshops, such as silk paper making, felting, watercolour painting techniques, silk painting and painting silk scarves. Courses are chosen by popular demand. We welcome everybody to take the opportunity to attend our Exhibition, and thank the Tatura Museum for their hospitality in providing such a nice venue, for our display. Hello everyone. Thought I would talk a little about travelling with your pets. We all know that it is recommended that we restrain our animals while driving, but what does that actually mean? What is the safest way for our furry friends to travel?

Most of us, at some stage, myself included, have opened the car, let “Fido” in and off we go. We don’t like to think of the worstcase scenario, but we must be aware that its possible.

A 4kg animal (cat/small dog) that travels a meter during a 60km collision will impact at a weight of approx. 1416KG! As you can imagine, that could have some very devastating consequences not only to the animal, but to any people it may hit. For example - when a high quality pet crate in the back of an SUV travelled the distance between the back door and the front seat on impact, the Border Collie that was inside, was ejected through to the front.

So, what is the best way to keep our pets and ourselves safe? There are many types of harnesses for dogs on the market that attach to the seatbelt. The harness will keep the dog in the vehicle and allow relatively safe access for those who may need to render assistance, but still allows a lot of movement on impact which potentially increases the risk of injury.

In my opinion, a crate that is anchored is the best option. The animal should have room to turn around and lie down. Not much more.

Dogs restrained by lead attached to the collar, whether inside or on the back of a ute, may be legal but certainly not optimal.

Here are some of the fines/regulations that apply to us here in Victoria.

An unrestrained dog on a ute or in a trailer carries a $330 fine. A dog sitting on your lap can cost you $248 It’s an offence to leave an animal unattended inside a vehicle for more than 10 minutes when the outside temperature is 28c or above say police. Drivers face a fine of $3304.

VicRoads says although there are no specific laws about restraining your dog inside a vehicle, if you put your pet at risk, you could face charges under the prevention of cruelty to animal laws.

And remember that our pets, just like us, need rest, toilet and drink stops.

WORLD EVENTS in August August 1 – International Child Free Day. This day was set up to celebrate those people who chose not to have children.

This is akin to having crocodile free day to celebrate those people who chose not to have a crocodile as a pet. Every day is child free day for those couples who chose not to have children. What about a child-free day for the many people who have to put up with their whining off-spring day after bl*#*y day. Here’s an idea. How about parents foist their ungrateful children onto these childless people for a day so that they can actually have a child-free day, then this day would make a little more sense.

August 3 – International Forgiveness Day. This is a time for personal reflection, restored relationships, and inner healing. However, why wait for a random day on the calendar imposed by strangers? True forgiveness can only come when you take control of your own life.

August 6 – International Beer Day. This day is always held on the first Friday in August. It’s a day to celebrate with old friends and meet new friends by drinking beer together. So, bottoms up! Salut! Prost!

August 8 – International Cat Day. I’m sure they have one of these days every couple of months. The cats are obviously doing more than hacking up fur balls, they’re also hacking the system. There are estimated to be 500 million cats frolicking in neighbour’s gardens all over the world and annoying their dogs. Owning a cat has been shown to improve mental health and to relieve stress, anxiety and depression although not in all cases as my cat tends to scratch on the flywire screen and meow endlessly at three o’clock in the morning demanding to be fed. Objects have been known to have been thrown.

August 9 – International Book Lovers Day. Who doesn’t enjoy a good book? Okay, lots of people but let’s just ignore them as they are obviously philistines. If you’re intelligent, creative, imaginative, cultured and clearly a superior intellect, then you know the value of losing yourself in a good book so I need say no more on the subject. Enjoy!

August 11 – Middle Child Day – It’s time, and I’m not biased in any way, shape or form, to give some well-deserved recognition to the long neglected middle child in the family.

The birth of the first child is always a special

occasion and it’s a proven scientific fact that this child is always spoilt rotten. The birth of the middle child is rather ho-hum, nothing to see here folks, we’ve done all of this before.

Then of course, we have the final child, the baby of the family who is once again spoilt rotten. Is it any wonder that middle children grow up to be fiercely independent and invariably go on to become either world leaders or serial-killers?

August 12 – World Elephant Day. The goal of World Elephant Day is to create awareness of the urgent plight of African and Asian elephants. African elephants are listed as ‘vulnerable’ and Asian elephants as ‘endangered’ on the IUCN Red List of threatened species. There is a belief that both African and Asian elephants could face extinction within ten years.

August 13 – International Left-handers Day. Are you a left-hander? Then this is the chance to tell your family and friends how proud you are of being left-handed and also raise awareness of the everyday issues that lefties apparently face in a world apparently designed for right-handers. Oh diddums, such trauma! Next, we’ll be having tennis racquets and hammers for left handers. What about right-handers day I say, or even backhanders day for that matter?

August 15 – World Relaxation Day. In a world full of stress, pressure and bad news, it’s important to occasionally stop and smell the roses. Compared to every other time in history, mankind has never had it so good.

So, make a list of all the things that you’re stressing about then circle the things that you have absolutely no control over e.g. global warming, Covid-19, Carlton, Islamic terrorists and promise yourself to ignore these whenever they appear on the news. Then for everything else on your list that you can do something about, get off your backside and do it! Remember, true happiness comes from solving your problems.

August 17 – Black Cat Appreciation Day. Not more cats? I tell you, they’ve taken over the world. Strangely, many people still believe the myth that black cats bring bad luck and some people even have deep-seated phobias about it (ailurophobia). However, it’s only bad luck if you happen to trip over one and fall in front of a bus or down the stairs. Animal shelters report that black cats are the least likely felines to be adopted,

hence the need for Black Cat Appreciation Day. We need to start a movement like ‘Black Cats Matter’.

August 20 – World Mosquito Day. On this day in 1897, British scientist Sir Ronald Ross made the discovery that malaria is transmitted between humans by the female anopheles mosquito. More than 100 years later, we are still working to find a cure for this deadly disease. One of the objectives of this day is to raise money to provide bed nets to help prevent children and families from getting malaria. Sometimes, we don’t realise how lucky we are living in Tatura, despite the occasional mosquito plague.

August 26 – Go Topless Day. This day has been organised to promote gender equality and encourages women to go topless in public, as men are able to do. I’m sure this was dreamed up in the Northern Hemisphere where it’s still nice and warm. Although I believe that we should be encouraging this type of equality, it would probably be too dangerous to celebrate the day in Australia at this time of the year as you could put somebody’s eye out. Perhaps we should leave it for summer.

August 29 – International Individual Rights Day. This is not to be confused with ‘I’m Entitled to Everything I Want Day’ which exists in the minds of many confused people. First proposed by John Locke, our basic human rights include life, liberty, property, freedom of speech and freedom of religion. It didn’t include the freedom to live off the taxes of other people because I’m too lazy to get out of bed and get a job and would much rather watch daytime television.

MURCHISON PRIMARY SCHOOL Murchison Primary were extraordinarily fortunate over the recent school holidays… The fairies have come! The Bathman family were kind enough to make the students a wonderful fairy house. Maureen Bathman told us

how they held out for just the right log and how she did lots of baking to keep her workers happy.

The students and staff were blown away with how amazing and well thought out the building was. Maureen has spent time landscaping around the fairy house too to make sure it really comes alive. We can’t wait to see what imagination it triggers!

“Mum where are my footy socks? Mum where’s my mouth guard?” Ahh the Saturday morning ritual that I’ll never take for granted again. The one I thought I might not get a chance to hear, when the footy season of 2020 looked so grim.

But to the credit of Nathan Saddlier and the Tatura Junior footy club volunteers, not only did they manage to bring together a small season in 2020, but they also managed to prepare the teams for a cracking 2021 season ahead.

This year with the under 16s moving up to the senior ranks, the Bulldogs have established 3 teams. Under 10s under 12s and under 14s. A total of 56 players. However, we did not get the numbers for a female team so this year we have the pleasure of Evie Harmen Playing with us in the under 10s.

The junior footy club is so important to our small community. Not only does it prepare our kids for their footy future, but it provides them with a weekly routine, team bonding with their mates, and a chance to learn about health and fitness.

Seeing the boys enjoy their footy is one thing, but seeing the community come together through covid and uncertainty has also been quite amazing. We would not be the Football club we are without the amazing coordinators, Coaches, volunteers, and parent helpers each week showing up.

A big thank you to Nathan Saddlier who has been the Junior Football Coordinator for many years and has now passed the reigns to Michael Reid. Michael will also be assisted by Simone Dunne as he is also the under 10s coach and has his hands quite full!

Also, a big thanks to Andrew and Lyana Speed and Simone Dunne, our assistant coach and team manager for the under 10s.

Jayden Armstrong who coaches our under 12s, along with team Manager Jess Miller and Andrew Wills, John Dellar, Graham Briggs who coach our under 14s with team manager Heath Robbins.

This year we also would like to thank our sponsors who helped us raise enough money to provide Tatura Bulldogs beanies to each of our players: Lewis Homes, Harkway Lodge, SW Beale Painting, Reid Carpet Cleaning, Tatura Blinds, Murdoch Laser Grading, Woodbyrne Farms, Reflex Sports & Massage, and Stacey’s Massaging. We would also like to thank Unilever, Pizza Nostra, Café Alofa, Charcoal Chicken, Tatura Football Netball Club for providing game day awards.

So as the season comes to an end, we would like to invite all our locals to come and watch a game, bring the kids, and get involved.

Training will kick off around the end of March 2022 & everyone is welcome. We look forward to a great finish to 2021 and cannot wait to see what 2022 brings for our beloved Bulldogs.
