Australia Day Celebrations 2015

AUSTRALIA DAY IN TATURA 2015 On a perfect Summer’s day, the bacon and eggs sizzling away, Tatura prepared for its 40th Australia Day Celebration. The barbeque breakfast is always organised by the members of the Lions Club and as usual was ‘well’ organised. Good on you Lions!

The large crowd assembled in the Italian Club and watched the flag raising ceremony on the screen to begin the official proceedings.

The Tatura Girl Guides stood to attention and saluted while the flag was unfurled. This was followed by the singing of the National Anthem, then the Australia Day Committee President Susanne Gill, welcomed everyone and introduced Ron Mallon of the Generations Church who gave the opening blessing.

The Hon. Sharman Stone MP said Tatura was a wonderful town and that International Dairy Week was a good example of what Tatura can accomplish in a first rate manner. She acknowledged the excellent band of volunteers that Tatura can muster and then introduced the 2015 Citizen of the Year, Mrs Glenys Eberle who is a shining example of an energetic and dedicated volunteer. Glenys began her life in Tatura as a farmer, 44 years ago. Her involvement in the community has included leadership roles in the CWA, schools, scouts, RSL and the environment. Glenys always finds time to assist in various community events such as the Tatura Art and Craft Show and helping to raise money for Legacy and the RSL by selling poppies and Anzac Day badges.

Glenys is a lover of the Australian outback and is now a volunteer caretaker of the Old Andado Homestead in the Northern Territory (now a heritage listed museum). She is able to combine her love of the outback and travelling with her husband Trevor by helping to maintain an iconic Australian outback station.

Glenys is the mother of three, grandmother of

seven and great grandmother of two.

President Susanne Gill said, “Glenys has been the treasurer of the Australia Day Committee for many years, and is one of a hard working group helping to make the Australia Day Celebration such a great success, ensuring that the day provides the unique Tatura flavour to our National Day. Glenys always has a smile and with her trademark laugh, she is always sensitive to people in need and opportunities to help. She epitomises the ideals of the Australia Day awards and we are proud to announce that she is our Citizen of the Year.”

Glenys responded in a most humble manner, saying she was honoured to receive the award and that it was a huge thrill and the last thing she expected. Glenys said that she was born in Tatura and had followed in her mother’s footsteps as a good example of being a good volunteer. She also thanked her mentors and family. Glenys is a worthy recipient inde ed.

President Susanne Gill gave a summary of the Australia Day celebrations held in Tatura over the past 40 years.

Susanne said, “Tatura has celebrated Australia Day for 40 years and the Committee was formed 30 years ago. Harry Fleming was named the first Citizen of the year for Tatura in 1975.”

Joseph Moorhouse entertained the crowd, singing ‘We Are Australian’ and played his own accompaniment. The Hon Wendy Lovell MP introduced Robert Mathieson, President of Tatura RSL, to accept the award for Australia Day Community Event of the Year. Robert and his Committee had worked tirelessly regarding their War Memorial Project, including the magnificent Bronze statue of Pte Robert Mactier VC. President Mathieson

acknowledged everyone who had contributed to the event being so successful and also thanked the community, “for respecting this sacred place of remembrance.”

The Tatura Sports Award was won by the CFA Junior Fire Brigade. In February 2014, against 70 other teams, the Tatura Junior Fire Brigade team became the first brigade, in the 41 year history of Junior State Championships, to win all possible categories. They were crowned Overall State Champion Brigade, a magnificent effort coming from a small town such as Tatura.

Tyson Kendall, a Year 10 student at McGuire College, was the junior guest speaker who told of his experiences at the Alpine School. He finished his very informative speech with, “I love Tatura just the way it is and there’s not a single thing I would change!” Good on you Tyson, a confident speech, very well received.

Cr Kevin ‘Gunna’ Ryan spoke of Tatura’s Dairy Show, saying it is the third largest in the world and that the volunteers associated with Dairy Week, approximately 300, have helped to put Tatura on the map! He was proud to present the Business and Team management awards and said that Tatura was the jewel in the crown of the City of Greater Shepparton.

The Business Award was won by the Gallery Café. The Gallery Café is a wonderful asset to Tatura, catering for all events. Kerryn and Neville Moore justly deserve this award as they have put a lot of thought into making it a very popular place to meet and eat in a relaxing atmosphere. Neville responded with a thoughtful speech, saying he and Kerryn were thrilled to be acknowledged.

The Team Management Award was won by the CFA Junior Fire Brigade Coaching Team.

coaching the junior teams in 2001. He was absolutely dedicated and trained with them up to three nights per week. As a result, the teams were successful at the 2005 and 2006 Junior State Championships. In 2008 he recruited two volunteer operational fire-fighters to help him, namely his brother Darren and Damian Briese. The demos are held to enable the teams to practise skills for when they are operational.

This dedicated, enthusiastic coaching team has continued to develop a high level of skill amongst the team members, and are also highly regarded and respected in CFA circles.

Alan Tyson accepted the award and gave a very well-spoken speech on behalf of the team.

Joseph Moorhouse then sang ‘I Still call Australia Home’ to a delighted audience.

Girl Guide, Caitlin Wright, presented baskets of fruit (donated by Tony Minutoli) to all award recipients and invited guests.

The Hon Wendy Lovell MP closed the proceedings, saying in part, “Tatura is the shining light when it comes to a sense of community. We love Tatura as it is and we know that the future of Tatura is in safe hands”.

Another beautifully organised and very enjoyable Australia Day Celebration. We extend to President Susanne Gill and her Committee our heartfelt congratulations.

AUSTRALIA DAY AWARD WINNERS The winners of the 2015 Australia Day awards were announced at ceremonies across Greater Shepparton on Australia Day. Severin Duhring was announced as the Greater Shepparton Australia Day Citizen of the Year and Shelby Cordwell-Ford was announced as the Greater Shepparton Young Citizen of the Year.

We started the day at our local swimming pool with a breakfast of bacon, eggs, sausages, tea, coffee and orange juice provided by Lions Club and CWA. Our keynote speaker was Mr Tony Murphy AFSM. He told us many entertaining stories of his experiences over his long career.

The Australia Day Awards were presented by Cr Michael Polan and our Citizen of the Year this year went to Mr John Ball.

Thanks to the generous donation from the Bendigo Bank Rushworth of showbags for the winners of the Colouring and Writing Competitions.

The Murchison Primary School and Community are very grateful for your sponsorship of this event. Congratulations to all the winners.

The Education Award went to Evangeline Drinnan and our Photographic Competition, ‘Spirit of Murchison’ was won by Mr Rob Brown.

First place in the Christmas Lights Competition went to Jim and Marg Tweddle with Andrew and Narrissa Gell a close second. The Encouragement Award went to Dennis and Jenny Johns.

Happy Birthday to all the members of our 26ers club. Anyone who was born on 26th January is able to join. Just contact someone on the Australia Day Committee.

Our final event was our annual ‘Duck Race’ which is enjoyed by all.

Thank you to the 430 people who attended our celebrations this year.

Members of Murchison Historical Society were delighted when their nomination for an Australia Day award was successful. John Ball, tireless worker for the Society was named Murchison Citizen of the Year for 2015 at the Australia Day celebration held in perfect weather in the grounds of our local swimming pool. Attended by 450 people, the Australia Day Committee again did a marvellous job in providing an excellent event to celebrate and express resident’s appreciation of this wonderful country in which we live.

Bruce Smith did a great job as MC and Australia Day Ambassador, Tony Murphy, Director Operations and Chief Fire Officer for the Metropolitan Fire Brigade, was an inspiring Guest Speaker.

As well as being on the Executive Committee of the Historical Society, John Ball has been the prime mover of the building project to extend the Heritage Centre. John also volunteers many hours for other organisations in the town.

He is involved with Wybalena Retirement Village, Murchison Neighbourhood House, Men's Shed, Murchison Community Care Business Development Committee, DP Jones Nursing Home and Christ Church Murchison.

Described as a 'quiet achiever,' John demonstrates the ability to stay focussed, to 'see the big picture' and work towards improvement for the township so a worthy recipient of this award. To celebrate this achievement, John with family and friends, enjoyed a relaxed lunch at Longleat Winery in Murchison later that day.

TOOLAMBA AUSTRALIA DAY AWARDS Mr. John Morritt This award winner is a quiet achiever with a patient and caring disposition. Before retirement, John was well respected by his employees and peers. He received many accolades for his dedicated and loyal service.

He reached the milestone of thirty-eight years' service with the former State Electricity Commission of Victoria, Powercor & Vemco.

He has demonstrated an 'Above and Beyond’ work ethic in order to maintain the well-being of companies and their customers. He continues to uphold this ethic in his volunteerism. John has an innate willingness to help others and over the years has been actively involved in many community councils, committees and events.

John's roles within his volunteering vary from management and fund raising to mowing lawns or laying turf. All undertaken with such ease, enthusiasm and efficiency. John has been and is a great inspiration to other members of our community.

Young Citizen of the Year - Ms Jessica White Jessica is a modest individual with an easy

going disposition. She generously donates her time to many organisations and events; however she has a genuine passion to improve the education and opportunity for students.

Some of her achievements include mentoring and motivating community individuals so they excel in learning. Due to this, many have then gone on to University. She has been innovative in her teaching practices and holds a Bachelor of Science, Psychology with honours and a Diploma in Education.

She has had an article published by Yale University Press and presented at the National Psychologist Meeting in Brisbane and assists in community events such as the Bush Christmas Festival, Community Breakfasts, the Lions Club, including organising Youth Of The Year Public Speaking Competition, Toolamba Recreation Reserve Committee of Management.

We are very proud that Jessica is part of the Toolamba community and appreciate her generosity!

ANNUAL 4WD SWAP MEET Nine months in the planning and a big effort from many members, culminated in the success of our first Annual 4WD Swap Meet.

We were overwhelmed by the number of people who came through the gates, to look at the big variety of goods that approximately 90 stall holders had for sale.

On the morning of April 6, 2014, the weather was perfect with the stall holders lining up at the Shepparton Harness Racing Club at 6am, keen to set up and start selling. The gates were open to the general public at 8am with many early shoppers able to grab some bargains. The big range of items for sale or swap, included new and used 4WD parts and accessories, car parts, camping and fishing gear, craft, clothing and bric-a-brac.

Refreshments were also available.

Various demonstrations were on show and also a club display of photos explained by some of our members who spent the day talking to people about our club and what our club stands for.

We are hosting another 4WD Swap Meet on March 29, 2015 to be held at the same venue, the Shepparton Harness Racing Club track on Melbourne Road Kialla, with the gates opening at 7am. A brief outline of what our club is about: The Goulburn Valley Four Wheel Club inc was formed in 1976. It now boasts an average of 50 family members, who enjoy the social events and club trips, including learners’ days.

We also do volunteer work such as: Gaffneys Creek cemetery clean up (twice a year) for the past 22 years, farm assistance after bushfires, storms, floods etc, high country hut restoration and disability drive days. We also make donations to Angel Flight, Royal Flying Doctors Service and Berry Street.

Can you suggest a good book to read? We are often asked this question, which is quite difficult to answer because everyone has their own tastes and ideas about what makes a great story, be it thriller or romance, biography or non-fiction. However to give you a few ideas, I thought I would list currently the most popular books in the library.

Our two most borrowed books are Personal

by Lee Child and Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn. Books with the most requests are Gone Girl, The Book Thief by Marcus Zusak and The Rosie project by Graeme Simsion.

Our most popular magazines are Australian Country Style, Better Homes and Gardens and Gardening Australia. The most popular DVD’s are Frozen and Arranged.

All of these are available through the library so do call in and ask or place a request using the web site. Don’t forget that digital editions of many magazines are available through our subscription to Zinio which can also be accessed through the Goulburn valley regional library web site. Or call into

The 5000 poppies project is closing soon.

This project, which is a tribute of respect and remembrance for Anzac Day 2015, involves knitting or crocheting poppies for a mass display at Federation square. If you have made any poppies please leave them at the library by February 28.

Share your story. Calling all budding writers or poets, we would love you to share your story with us. You can write about your memories or experiences during celebration and disaster, as well as how life, towns and communities have changed. This competition is open to people of all ages, just hand in your article to the library by February 28.

YOUR PET AND SNAKE BITE During the warmer months of the year, we see many dogs and cats that have or may have been bitten by a deadly venomous snake and, unfortunately, this summer is no exception.

The most common snake species seen in the Goulburn Valley are Tiger and Brown snakes, although we do occasionally see Red Bellied Black snakes as well. Snakes can be anywhere in rural areas, but are especially prevalent around waterways and in parks and bushland.

Signs and symptoms of snake bite are highly variable with some pets showing signs of acute collapse and death within minutes and other animals having more delayed symptoms. The most common early symptoms are vomiting, salivation, dilated pupils, and difficulty walking or weakness and paralysis. We often get asked, “How long have I got if my cat or dog is bitten?” Unfortunately, there is no real answer to this. One thing is certain, if you suspect your pet may have been bitten by a snake, it is crucial to call us as soon as possible.

We have a combined anti-venom available that helps neutralise the venom of all snakes seen in this area. Unfortunately, anti-venom is expensive and we encourage everyone to think about what you would do in the event that your pet was bitten by a snake. Luckily, most pets that survive the initial envenomation go on to make a full recovery, provided of course that the anti-venom is given in a timely fashion.

by Rachel Bradshaw Mum’s older sister, Ann, was an influence on my life even when my mum was a kid and I was years from existing. It was Ann who introduced my mum to cool music at a young age. Bands like Skyhooks, KISS, Bay City Rollers and The Sweet became my mum’s favourite bands after Ann brought them to her attention. Years later mum introduced me to these same bands, many of which I still love today, thanks Auntie Ann! My mum is a dedicated horse rider. She has kept horses for nearly 40 years. As a kid I also took up horse riding so I could hang out with her.

But where did this equine obsession begin? It was Auntie Ann of course.

She was the first in our family to get a horse when my mum was nine years old and a horse for my mum followed soon after. This was the beginning of my own story with horses even if my first horse didn’t come along for another twenty years.

I wish this story ended with twenty years of my own memories of horse riding and music listening with my Aunt but that was not to be. She was a passenger in a car accident and was killed instantly at only 22 years old, two years before I was born. A mistake made by a driver under the influence of alcohol changed my life forever before I was born. The accident has altered the lives of generations of my family. Many family members can only ever know Ann through photos and the memories of others.

Although we have never met, my life was shaped by Ann through music and horses years before my birth. She will never be far away when I am at a concert, listening to KISS or Skyhooks or riding a horse.

MONSTER TOWN GARAGE SALE The Tatura Monster Town Garage Sale will be running again on Saturday May 2. The last two years have seen this become a very successful event, so don’t miss out on being part of the action this year. It’s getting bigger each time with more garage sale stall holders and more people buying maps to visit all the sites.

It is really easy to participate by doing any one of the following: register to hold your own garage sale for $20.00 ($15.00 if booked by April 15), come along on the day and purchase a map listing all the addresses of the garage sales for $2.00, tell as many friends as you can that Tatura Community House is hosting this great event, or donate items to Tatura Community House who will hold their own garage sale on the day.

Just spreading the word will help get the numbers up, and this will create more sales, more interest and more money for the town. Some of the local eateries will offer specials on the day to people who show them their purchased map. We are expecting more than 400 maps to be sold this year, based on last year’s count. Each map shows the addresses for all the garage sales, with a short description of what’s for sale at each one.

A large amount of effort has gone into making this event really come alive and has become an annual event for the town that we are very proud of. Clean out cupboards, sheds, houses and any other cluttered areas and book a garage sale stall today, as booking are now open!

Interviews with John RIDING AROUND CAMBODIA

After John and Lorri McCallum toured Cambodia by bus several years ago and did all the touristy things, they thought it would be a good idea to return and see more of the countryside and what better way to do it than by motor bike. The Bulletin’s John Kriesfeld, spoke to John and Lorri to find out more about their unusual trip.

The Bulletin: Why did you choose Cambodia?

John: I moved to Adelaide thirty years ago and became involved with a group of people from the Christian Motor Cyclists Association. One of the members, Wayne, has a real interest in Cambodia and a few years ago he organised a bus trip for ten of us which we really enjoyed.

Then a couple of years ago, when I was working in Laos, I got talking about motor bikes with Owen Holcombe, the maintenance superintendent on my shift. Owen is an Aussie

who lives in Cambodia with his wife and was trying to establish a motor bike tour business.

When I caught up with Wayne last Christmas he suggested that we go back to Cambodia and this time we should do it on bikes. I said,” Funny you should say that.” We contacted Owen and he organised the tour for eleven of us. It was a fifteen day tour and we covered 2100km on the bikes.

The Bulletin: Did you have to bring your own motor bike?

John: No, Owen hired the bikes for those of us who were riding. The quality wasn’t too bad. We had a couple of issues but we were able to get them sorted out. There were six trail bikes, three scooters, and a bus with a trailer. The trailer was only fitted at the last minute. cars or buses are a rarity. I brought my own helmet with me as the hire helmets weren’t up to Australian standards.

Lorri: Not all of us rode bikes so the rest of us followed on the minibus with the luggage.

Depending on the road conditions, some people on the bus had the option of riding the scooters.

The Bulletin: Did you require any injections before you went?

Lorri: We didn’t have to have injections but most of us had hepatitis A, typhoid, diphtheria, and of course we took anti-malarial tablets.

The Bulletin: How did you choose the itinerary?

John: I got in touch with Owen at Paleriders (Cambodia) and we organised the trip together.

Interviews with John sites. Owen’s one of the most generous people I’ve ever met. He’s built two schools, funds an orphanage and contributes to many other organisations.

The Bulletin: Was Owen the tour guide?

John: Yes. His wife Sreyda helped him, along with her cousin Sakhorn who drove the bus, her nephew Vien who assisted with the mechanical work, carrying bags and loading the bus and Tin Tin, the motor bike mechanic who liked to show off by riding on one wheel.

Owen always rode in the lead and Tin Tin was the tail-end Charlie. If anybody broke down or ran out of petrol then Tin Tin was always there to get them back on the road.

The Bulletin: Tell me about the traffic.

John: None of us were looking forward to riding in the traffic at Phnom Penh on the first day but we found that once you got into the traffic it actually works incredibly well. The people are very patient and courteous. It’s not at all like Melbourne or Adelaide where people just blow their horn at you. Of course, once you get out on the roads there’s nowhere near as much traffic. We just had to remember to be aware of trucks and cars as they have right of way.

The Bulletin: Were the roads wide enough for you?

John: In most cases they were wide enough for two cars and a bike. They varied from reasonably good bitumen roads to gravel and dirt. The first twenty kilometres of the Death Highway was the worst road I’ve ever experienced. However, it was okay because we weren’t travelling very fast. Our biggest day was 390kms and that was on good roads, but all the rest were far less.

The Bulletin: What were the highlights of the trip?

John: There were many highlights during the trip. There was amazing scenery as we followed the Mekong River during the first couple of days of the trip. Riding along the Death Highway was memorable. We travelled by mini-bus to the Laos border to visit the Khone Waterfalls on the Mekong River and

then caught a boat on the return trip. The Khone Waterfalls actually stop traffic on the river so a group of Frenchmen built a lift to lift boats out of the river and onto a train which then carried the boats around the falls and then put them back in the river. Visiting the Preah Vihear Temple was interesting. It’s disputed territory between Thailand and Cambodia and there were soldiers everywhere. The road over the Cardamom Mountains to Koh Kong was too rough for the bus and the scooters so they took the highway around the mountains while the trail bikes tackled the rough terrain.

It was real trail bike riding. It took us an hour to travel the first fourteen kilometres. Most of us fell off at some stage although there were no serious injuries. The scenery was stunning although I didn’t see much of it as I was too busy concentrating on staying upright. We spent a day on the beach at Kep, which was once a resort for the French colonialists, just lazing around.

The Bulletin: What was the accommodation like?

Lorri: Overall it was very good although some of it was basic. However, the beds were comfortable and we were always supplied with clean linen. The plumbing was interesting because the showers and basins all drained to a central point in the floor.

John: Most of the places we ate at had English writing on the menus along with Western options for tourists who didn’t fancy the local food.

The Bulletin: It sounds like an expensive trip.

John: Not at all. It was very reasonably priced. It cost $3,200 for both Lorri and I and included all meals, accommodation, motor bike hire, petrol, the lot. Air fares were on top of that but Julie Duncan, our local travel agent, got a group discount for us as well as a discount on our travel insurance. We stayed in Cambodia for a few extra days and she also organised that.

The Bulletin: What was the weather like?

Lorri: It was pretty much perfect although it was a bit hot in southern Cambodia for some of the bike riders in their heavy jackets. It was

a lot cooler in the north of the country.

The Bulletin: I understand that Cambodia is a poor country compared to Australia.

John: Yes, it’s a very poor country but the people are incredibly friendly and very resourceful. Tin Tin the mechanic was a genius with a few pieces of wire and a spanner.

With the price, it’s all about negotiation and haggling but sometimes you can feel a bit guilty because everything’s so cheap.

Lorri: There are also two prices, one for Cambodians and one for us and the standard price for us was always one dollar.

The Bulletin: What advice would you give to anybody contemplating a similar trip to Cambodia?

John: It’s such a good value holiday, so I’d say just do it.

Italian Visitors to the Ossario

COMMEMORATION AT THE MURCHISON ITALIAN OSSARIO by Mia Spizzica

On the highway heading towards Shepparton from Melbourne, there is an exit to Murchison that could easily be missed. After a short drive, we reach a grand old iron bridge that spans the few hundred meters across the Goulburn River. This river crossing is like a secret door that opens to a tiny village with its handful of shops and a pub facing the river.

The entire village is surrounded by majestic gum trees that give it an air of relaxation and calm. Murchison was a stopping point to the gold fields of Euroa and Bendigo and is now a holiday or tree change locality.

It’s Sunday, and there’s plenty of time for an espresso coffee and a cake at the famous Bakery. To the left of the bridge, the road leads towards the Murchison Cemetery and to another secret and sacred place inside its gates. The crowds are gathering for the

Italian Commemoration ceremony with all the military regalia and honours common during Anzac Day. Many have forgotten that the Italians were allies of Britain in World War One. No one imagined that this alliance would be turned on its head in 1940 when the Fascist dictator made a deadly decision on behalf of Italians who did not agree with his war aspirations. It was time to park the car and enter the Murchison Cemetery. The Murchison Lions Club sell red poppies and the Historical Society has set up its stall. Donations are needed to renew the plaque on the Ossario’s history, few dollars go here and there but all for a good cause.

A few steps into the cemetery we see the tidy well kept corridors of lawns and headstones.

Mingling between some long forgotten graves from the 1850s are more recent graves.

Towards the rear of the graveyard, hidden behind an imposing iron gate and an extensive, dark green curtain of mature Cyprus pines is the Italian Ossario, a mausoleum that houses the remains of 130 Italians who died whilst detained as either military Prisoners of War or as Italian civilian internees in Australian internment camps from 1940 to 1946. This unique Italian mausoleum built with a traditional stone chapel, bell tower and above ground compartments for the deceased is a Sacred War Grave, as well as a War Memorial.

The annual Italian War Dead Commemoration Day has been conducted by the Italian Consulate and Military Attaché every second Sunday of November since the early 1960s and is open to the public. From the mid1970s, dozens of buses filled with members of Italian clubs, arrived from all over Australia to honour the war dead but by 2014, as the post war Italian migrant population slowly diminishes, there are only a few half-filled buses. A few local schools sent students and teachers to represent the local Italian communities, as did the Cobram RSL and the Murchison Historical Society. The Mayor of Shepparton, Italian Consul General and others joined the dwindling Italian military groups in remembering their dead.

There are many local stories about why, who and when the Ossario was built. Most know little about the 130 souls resting in the mausoleum. We were fortunate to invite builder Avelino Crespan, who constructed the rear extension of the Ossario in 1974 with a team of local Italians. Avelino also built St. Mel’s Catholic Church in Shepparton and is the only person we know of who is connected with the building of the Ossario. It is vital to find information about the people involved in the mausoleum’s construction before memories of the Ossario vanish with the passing of time.

Documents and stories on the military men buried in the Ossario are also being collected.

They belonged to the Italian armed forces of which 18,500 Prisoners of War were captured

TATURA AREA BULLETIN, February 2015 - Page 17 by the Allies and transported to Australia for the duration of the war. Their stories will be told in good time. A less known fact is that among those who had died during their wartime detentions, were 33 ordinary Italian civilians.

Who were these Italians buried in such a beautiful Italian mausoleum in central Victoria? What were their tragic stories? These questions triggered a research journey of highs and lows, frustrations and joys and the discovery of a sacred war grave on the edge of the Goulburn River. Old documents have surfaced that open small windows into the lives of those who had died whilst detained during the war.

I decided to focus on the 33 civilians as I could find their descendants more easily if they lived in Australia.

Slowly but surely, as I discovered the name of each person, I found some of the names of their descendants. Many quirky, (but ethical!) methods were used to find the children and grandchildren of the deceased. Not everyone whom I contacted wanted to know about a grandfather’s last resting place but the families who did want to know more about their loved ones, were keen to visit the graves that they had not known of for 70 years or more. By 2014, I had found six families of the deceased and many more people whose relatives knew the men buried at Murchison during the war.

This year, our group of Italian internee families arrived by air and road from around Australia. The Musitano and De Martini and Micale families have loved ones buried in the Ossario. John Musitano was two years old when his father Raffaele died, while Rob De Martini never met his grandfather, Giovanni Battista. Basil Micale, who had come to Murchison in October, didn’t even know that he had an uncle named Salvatore who had died during the war. There was much grieving amongst those whose father, grandfather or uncle had not returned home to their families and to touch and lay flowers by the burial site.

After the commemoration was over, our group gathered under the Big Oak Tree overlooking the river in the Murchison Gardens. We set up our tables and chairs and out came the Italian ‘al fresco’ home made luncheon! The Italian potato salad, antipasti, canapé, stuffed red peppers, char grilled aubergine, Italian cheeses, sausages, cold meats, fruits, freshly baked apple tart, hand made sweets made by Nicole from West Australia, and freshly ground espresso in real Italian cups prepared on the spot by

The Ossario Building Janette. How much more Italian could it get! From tears of grief to tears of joy, we lived up this most delightful lunch al fresco in honour of the souls resting in the Ossario. Another small group from Melbourne also arrived at the Remembrance Day commemoration. They are supporters of Queensland cane cutter Francesco Fantin, the antifascist who was killed because of his political beliefs in camp 14A at Loveday in South Australia in November 1943. They arrived to the Remembrance Day commemoration with an eye-catching banner that tells of their deep respect and support for the man they consider a war hero and a martyr of war. COMMUNITY HOUSE CREATIVE WRITING

The creative writing course at the Community House has begun with six budding writers in attendance. The course covers character creation and development, setting and atmosphere, the importance of conflict, plot development and structure, writing interesting dialogue, effective paragraphs and grammar, point of view, showing - not telling, genres, rewriting and editing.

The students have already created a set of interesting and diverse characters that will come to life over the next few weeks as they are thrust into a variety of difficult situations. The students have made an excellent start and there is a very good chance that some of their stories will be published in the Bulletin later this year. Fiction is only limited by your creative boundaries, so once you set your imagination free there are no limits to what can be achieved.

ARRRGGG!, My head is spinning, so many thoughts running around up there. All the memories flooding back since that first heartbeat, almost 90years ago.

Since that ‘one day in September’ in 1925 when the curtain was pulled back from my foundation stone and the light flooded in, I have not missed a thing that has happened in Tatura, my Tatura, our Tatura.

Something else I bet you have forgotten, but I haven’t because it was my first, only two weeks after ‘my’ first heartbeat that other ‘one day in September’ happened when the mighty Geelong Cats devoured the Collingwood Magpies for their first ever win in a grand final.

So now you know why my head is spinning, all those long dormant memories have been brought back with all the talk about my 90th Birthday and I can’t stop thinking about the last 90 years. The ‘Gala Ball’ planned for July, makes me remember all the balls held in the past 90 years. The Re-enactment of the unveiling of my foundation stone brings back all the memories of my first heartbeat, (I wonder who they’re going to get to play Pompey Elliott, he was such a handsome man), the lunch and huge Variety Concert after. All the events I have seen in the past 90 years are still in my memory.

Maybe by next month my head will have stopped spinning and I can talk more coherently about what is happening in this, my 90th year.

Yes, I’m still looking for that new dress and saving madly to pay for it, ‘cos it’s not from the cheap end of Collins Street I can tell you. Oh dear! is that showing my age, it’s such a long time since I bought a new dress, maybe Collins street is not the place to go anymore. Perhaps I’ll just look in Tatura, maybe I can find my new dress there instead of going out of town. Wouldn’t that be wonderful, home grown is always best.

TATURA FIRE BRIGADE – PROTECTING YOUR COMMUNITY Local fires have kept the brigade busy. Since the start of December the Tatura Fire Brigade has responded to forty-five incidents including twenty-three grass fires, five structural fires two road accidents and one car fire. Just prior to Christmas a number of grass fires were caused by an intense lightning storm that passed over the District. Tatura had several call-outs over the period & CFA reported that this was one of its busiest nights on record for CFA in this region. Most of these fires were kept small due to rapid, concerted initial attack by local brigades.

As well as responding to these local outbreaks, Tatura was one of the first Brigades called to assist at the large Creightons Creek bush fire and this work continued, including on Christmas and Boxing Days. The Brigade was also placed on standby to travel to an outbreak at Mia Mia, south of Heathcote.

CFA advise that as we are now in a long, dry and hot summer, all residents in fire prone areas are urged to prepare their fire plan now. With a plan in place landowners are not searching for information and having to make last minute decisions about safety. The key is to be prepared, know your trigger for leaving early if necessary, what you will do in the event of a fire emergency and where you can find more information.

Often events unfold too quickly initially for emergency services to respond with a telephone alert or emergency warning. CFA warns that it can’t send a fire truck to every home and it can’t knock on every door to tell people to leave.

Residents should always be aware of local conditions, including monitoring upcoming fire weather and listen out for warnings they may need to be aware of.

TATURA PROBUS CLUB The meeting on January 22, held at our new venue, was very enjoyable with Ros Wright being our Member behind the Badge. Anna Ciavarella was scheduled to speak but arrived with ‘no voice’! Ros Wright kindly took her place. Ros told us of her experiences concerning the lead up to being on the ‘Millionaire Hot Seat’ TV show. This was quite a drawn out affair, but Ros enjoyed the experience even though she wasn’t successful in ‘bringing home the bacon’. Thank you very much Ros, it was fun hearing of your experiences.

Cam MacDermid of Kyabram was our guest speaker who told us of his trip to Spain to walk the Camino de Santiago, (the way of St James). Cam joined the Camino at Pamplona, the city famous for the running of the bulls.

He finished at the Cathedral in Santiago 35 days, averaging about 20 km each day. Cam walked on his own and was not part of an organised group. Santiago is Spanish for St James, the Patron Saint of Spain. His relics are under the altar of the Cathedral in Santiago.

These pilgrimages started over 1000 years ago and approximately 150,000 pilgrims

take part each year. Cam told us the Camino passes through 160 towns and villages where he stayed at hostels each night for a cost of $10 a night. He said the highlights of his pilgrimage were meeting with other people from all over the world and the kindness and generosity he received, also the stone he carried from Kyabram and the placing of it under a cross at the highest point (5000ft). The stones are deposited by pilgrims as a symbol of shrugging the weight of one’s sins. Cam, of course, was pleased he had successfully finished the pilgrimage, meeting new people and the experience; but said “Australia is the very lucky country.” Thank you Cam for your really interesting talk we all enjoyed it.

The Afternoon Delights on February 25 will be ‘The Swinging Sixties’. The club has their table booked for this event, which should be a great afternoon.

TATURA PRIMARY SCHOOL It has been an ideal start to the year at Tatura Primary School. Everyone worked hard to make the classrooms look attractive and engaging for the start of the year.

Students settled in quickly and all teachers have used our start-up program which establishes expectations and routines throughout 2015.

We have 38 preps this year. Teachers Donna Crosbie and Rachel Farrarare delighted with how easily the preps have settled in and have adapted to the routine of school. The grade 6 students have continued the tradition of supporting their special prep buddies to start school and settle in.

Amanda Ross, our Visual Arts teacher has displays of student art work up around the school and students have enjoyed the chance to present their names artistically.

Nicole Evans is our Health and Physical Education teacher this year. Students from P-6 are being taught athletic skills ready for the House sports at the end of term. Nicole also co-ordinates the ICT at school.

Students from 3-6 took part in Safer Internet Day last week Children and young people were encouraged to be safer and more responsible when using technology and mobile phones. This year's theme is 'let's create a better internet'.

Kerry Morse the Literacy support teacher started seeing students on the literacy support program for the grade one children. To ensure the children have success parents are encouraged to follow up each night with practise.

Tatura Primary School is very excited to be working with the philanthropic organisation ‘The Song Room’ during 2015. Grades 1, 2, 3 & 4 will be having musical lessons throughout the year delivered by musical artist Nicole Thorn. Class teachers will be involved in the lessons and following up on the activities.

Our school continues the strong student leadership structure. Students enjoyed the experience of writing speeches and speaking in front of their peers. Badges will be presented at Assembly on February 16 by representatives from Tatura RSL. CWA – RODNEY BRANCH February has turned out to be a very busy month for our Senior and Junior branch members. The Junior branch held their first meeting of the year on February 5, with the girls filling trauma dolls, learning how to crotchet and painting pictures on the wooden pickets, to be used as a display by the Tatura Community House. The Junior Branch meets on the first Thursday of the month at Hodson House.

ANZ Red Ball Hot Shots

TATURA AND DISTRICT JUNIOR ASSOCIATIONANZ HOT SHOTS Dhurringile and Murchison tennis clubs continue to host the ANZ Junior League Tennis. Recently, ANZ Red Ball juniors were given an opportunity to show-case their tennis skills on one of the main Courts at the 2015 Australian Open. Association volunteers were thrilled to have been selected. “What a wonderful experience for rural kids to play at one of the world’s best grand slam tournaments.” The juniors and their families were awarded a free ground pass and watched both Legends and top ranked players. Only four rounds remain of the ANZ Hot Shots.

Presentation will be held on Friday February 28 at 6.30pm followed by a free BBQ. If you would like your child to participate in an ANZTHS program please contact Tatura and District Tennis Association secretary Lisa Niglia on 5824 2884.

On Sunday February 8, the Junior Branch celebrated its 10th Anniversary in a garden setting. It was an extremely hot day but chilled water, icy poles and the like kept the heat at bay. The girls enjoyed a delicious afternoon tea provided by the Senior members, a photographic display of activities over the past 10 years, cutting of the Birthday cake, a display of craft work by Sarah Niglia, an original Junior member, presentation of Certificates to the Co-ordinators Lyn Trezise (10 years), Gwen Ranson (8 years) and Shirley Harrison (2 years).

Janette Mason our member and State Treasurer of CWA of Victoria also presented the Junior Branch with a Certificate from Head Office acknowledging the 10th Birthday and Heather Drust Group President of Goulburn Valley West Group, presented the Junior branch with a gift. The singing of Happy Birthday was accompanied by Isobel Piercy on the violin and Cassie Harrison (one of the original Junior members) entertained the guests by singing. A very enjoyable day despite the heat, thanks to all the work put in by Lyn Trezise, Shirley Harrison and their band of workers.

The Senior Branch members, who meet on the second Thursday of the month at the Senior Citizen’s Rooms at 7.30 pm packed Care Bags for young girls in East Timor and similar areas at the meeting in February.

Members also attended the Group Conference at Harston on February 19 with new Group President Judith Poole being inducted.

IDW VOLUNTEERS A BIG THANK YOU

On behalf of the Board of the Tatura Football Netball Club and the IDW subcommittee, I would like to thank the many volunteers who assisted at this year’s International Dairy Week.

The volunteers worked in many areas and took on a great number of roles which included: preparation of sandwiches and rolls, cooking and serving breakfasts at Wilson Hall, preparation, cooking and serving hot and cold food during the day at Wilson Hall, preparation and serving for special functions, manning BBQ’s at field days and for specific groups, preparation, cooking and serving breakfasts, lunches, and evening meals at Ballantyne Centre, serving from food vans, bar service, gate keeping, logistical support prior, during and after the event, workforce coordination and rostering, preparation and maintaining floats, invoicing, banking, cleaning of stalls and grounds.

In all, approximately 240 volunteers take part, some for a couple of hours, many for the entire event. The fact that some volunteers have no involvement with the football/netball club but still wish to volunteer is a reflection on the fantastic community spirit of Tatura and District people.

In 2016 we will be looking for any new volunteers that will assist in any of the areas mentioned above. If you like to have a laugh and a chat, would like to meet new people from within the town or even from overseas, and generally be involved in Tatura’s biggest event of the year, please contact me on 0408 3352 84 and I will point you to the appropriate team leader. Sacred Heart Primary School’s annual fete is gearing up to be bigger than ever in 2015 with lots of new additions to the program for students, families and parishioners to enjoy.

This year, for the first time, children can try new activities such as Hot Shots Tennis, pony rides, bop in the disco or strike a pose in the photo booth.

TATURA GIRL GUIDES On February 5 we held our first night for 2015 at Guides, and welcomed two new girls, Avah and Sophie. Leaders and Guides say a special ‘Thank You’ to Ursula Weitacher for answering our call for help with the painting of the Community House Pickets Project, ‘Colour our World’. It is folk like Ursula who do colour our world! With Leaders and Guides on holidays for the Christmas break, Ursula’s time and effort was very much appreciated by those involved. Thank you to the Community Hub for giving us the opportunity to advertise Guides in Tatura in a colourful way for years to come.

With Marj Earl’s retirement, we welcome Jill Wright into Guiding as our Treasurer. Jill is experienced in this field and we thank her for accepting the position. Jill has a daughter Caitlin who has recently enrolled in Guides.

Fundraising for 2015: On Friday January 30, our fundraising began with a BBQ at Tatura Pool, although the weather was a little chilly for swimming, every effort helps us to reach our goal of renovating the Guide kitchen which is in a poor state. We thank Dennis Wright, our BBQ cook on the night.

The wiring in the Guide kitchen was completed last year and the Guides certainly appreciated being able to turn on fans in such hot weather. This year we are hopeful of having a Fundraising Committee with parents involved.

At Easter Time we are taking part with the community in the All Saints Easter Expo when Guides will set up their own story in Art Form of ‘The Story of when Jesus enters Jerusalem, (more details at a later date).

This term there will be canoeing at Victoria Lake Shepparton, learning the rules of water safety as well as enjoying the fun of canoeing.

April 18 – Guides and Scouts will meet for an activity day for 10 – 17 year olds.

RESTORING RESPECT Paddy watched forlornly as the Sri Lankan batsman smacked another six off the Irish bowler. He glanced over at his mate Sean who was busy opening another bottle of Guinness. “We struggle a bit with cricket don’t we?” he said.

Sean shrugged as he handed the bottle to Paddy. “We struggle at rugby and soccer as well and I can’t remember the last time we won a gold medal at the Olympics.”

“Summer or winter?”

“Either,” said Sean. “But it’s not all bad, we are the world champions at Gaelic Football.”

“That’s only because nobody else plays it, and don’t forget, the Australians gave us a good whack the last time we played that hybrid version,” said Paddy.

“Yes, there is that,” replied Sean as he settled back into his seat. After a lengthy pause, he said, “You know Paddy, I’ve been thinking.”

Paddy raised an eye-brow. “Have you now.”

“Yes, and I think it’s time we did something to restore a bit of respect in our country. We need to do something to make the other countries sit up and take notice.”

“What did you have in mind?”

Sean thought for a moment while he gathered his thoughts. “You know how the Americans and Russians sent a man to the moon and how the French, Chinese and even the Indians have sent satellites into space?”

“It’s common knowledge,” said Paddy. “What’s your point?”

“Well we need to go one better,” said Sean excitedly. “Our country needs to send a man to the sun. Nobody’s done that before so you and I should volunteer.”

“I don’t know about that,” replied Paddy doubtfully. “The sun is awfully hot and I’m not sure a man would be able to survive.”

“Yes, I know,” replied Sean, “but I believe I’ve been able to solve that problem. We’ll go at night.”

Paddy looked at him for a moment then nodded his head in admiration.

“Pure genius.”

MURCHISON PRE-SCHOOL The gates are open at the Murchison Pre-school Last week we opened our gates for 2015 and it has been wonderful to see the smiling and excited faces of so many young children arriving at occasional care and kindergarten. Everyone has been busily painting, cooking in the shop, swinging, running, making kites, picking tomatoes, washing the dolls and riding bikes. We even had a pet lizard visit us!

This year we are excited to welcome Jenni Rathjen to our teaching staff as the co-ordinator of occasional care/fun group.

TAT STUDIO Living Longer Living Stronger-Fay’s 600th visit Into its seventh year and TAT STUDIO has provided exercise and physical activity for the mature and wiser age group. COTAS-Living Longer Living Stronger strength training program is a social program and has grown into a great source of community engagement for all casual and regular members. This is a very important part of the Living Longer Living Stronger program that gives the participants a sense of belonging, a positive outlook on life, friendship and fun. Fay, (a dedicated gym goer and part of the Living Longer Living Stronger strength training program) has been a member since December 2009 and regularly attends the gym three times a week. Not bad for someone who is 80 years young! Fay admittedly struggles with some of the exercises but it becomes part of her life and daily routine and it’s got to be doing some good for her bones, balance and well being. By the time this goes to print Fay would have accumulated a lot more workouts in the gym. Well done Fay. You’re an inspiration and keep up the good work. Tackle the Issue: ICE, Alcohol and other Drug Forums The Australian Drug Foundation’s Good Sports program is holding a forum to help you and your family and members of your community to prevent the damage caused by drug use.

The forum will be hosted by experts in drug prevention and treatment who will help you understand practical methods of reducing drug problems and help people live happy and healthy lives.

The forum is on Tuesday March 3, from 6pm to 8.30pm at McLennan Sports Centre, Echuca Rd Mooroopna.

Operation Safeplate This ongoing operation aims to encourage our community to secure their vehicle registration plates with one-way screws. This will protect vehicles from having their registration plates stolen. When stolen, the plates are used on other vehicle in a range of other crimes with the majority being used to conceal the theft of fuel.

If your vehicle has not had the one-way screws fitted to your vehicle, Neighbourhood Watch will be running three Safeplate days in the first half of the year. They will supply and fit the screws to your vehicle for a gold coin donation. All available between 10am to 2pm.

Cool Heads Program This confronting community program provides an awareness of the consequences of driver distraction and the impact of road trauma. It provides young drivers with the information they need to make informed decisions about their attitude to driving and with whom they get into a vehicle. The Victoria Police coordinate these programs each year.

This program will be on Wednesday March 18 with a 7pm start (Sharp) and concludes at approximately 9.15pm.

SES Volunters Training

TATURA SES On Thursday, December 11, the Tatura SES presented Commo’s Metals with a certificate of appreciation for the past ten years of support. Jamie and his team have provided scrap cars for the local unit for over ten years, providing a training ground for both new volunteers and also experienced rescue volunteers to practice and refine their unique lifesaving skill needed to rescue people from vehicles following a motor vehicle collision.

Jamie from Commo’s Metals says he enjoys the challenges of preparing a scenario for the Tatura SES Unit to train in, making it as difficult as possible for the unit members. He said, “I am very impressed with the Tatura SES’ skills, willingness, professionalism and dedication to be successful with the difficult scenarios I provide for them.”

CATHOLIC WOMEN’S LEAGUE After an extended break over the Christmas period, 15 members attended the first meeting of the League on Wednesday February 4 held in St. Mary's Hall. The league welcomes two new members for 2015. The office bearers for the year are President, Mrs. Pat Baldwin, Secretary, Mrs. Gwen Ranson and Treasurer Mrs. Trish Warnett.

Members will attend the World Day of Prayer on Friday March 5, this year hosted by the Generations Church. The annual crazy whist card afternoons will commence on Monday 20th. April and continue until November.

The next meeting will be held on Wednesday March 4 in St. Mary's Hall commencing at 2.00 p.m.

Daniel Matejic, Unit Controller of the Tatura SES Unit said, “Without Commo’s Metals support, it would dramatically reduce the unit’s ability to adequately train our rescue crews for real life road rescue events. Commo’s Metals continues to provide us with a training environment that accelerates the learning and delivery of training and very accurately simulates the high speed crashes that we face in real life call-outs which gives our volunteer members essential practical experience which otherwise would take years to achieve. On behalf of the Tatura Unit, I would like to thank Jamie and Muzza from Commo’s Metals for going out of their way to help the community by providing such a valuable and important resource.”

Even with Commo’s impending move to larger premises in Mooroopna, Jamie and Muzza plan to continue their tradition in donating their time and scrap cars to help train volunteer rescuers, and have earmarked a corner of the yard especially for the rescue training to be set up. It’s a great example of a local business not only supporting their local volunteer emergency services but also supporting their local community.

Goulburn Valley tree group The lovely soft rain we enjoyed when I last wrote a column has given way to what we normally expect at this time of the year. In fact, as soon as the children go back to school, it is hot.

No time to be planting out but ripe for planning and organizing for the ground to be prepared in readiness should we be lucky enough to get an autumn break. In the nursery, the trees are doing their bit and growing to the stage of being moved to the sales area along with their little histories.

Looking along the racks, the wattles are bursting at the seams but common sense must prevail and planting withheld until conditions are more suitable. The Eu. citradora (lemon scented gums) and angophora are both looking very healthy and they grow into handsome trees, provided you have the space. The callistemons and smaller varieties are not letting the side down either.

We are open every Tuesday (9 to 11.30am) if you just want to wander around and make up your mind for later or even take home what you like to make sure of your purchase. We don’t intend to open on Saturdays until Easter.

TATURA TOY LIBRARY The Tatura Toy library is now open for 2015. Are you thinking of joining a committee that is locally based and beneficial for your children, grandchildren, groups? We would love to see you within our team. There is little commitment and you get to borrow a huge amount of toys and activities.

Why is play important to children? Play connects us to others. Sharing joy, laughter, and fun with others promotes bonding and strengthens a sense of community. We develop empathy, compassion, trust, and the capacity for intimacy through regular play.

Kids who have been given plenty of opportunities for play-based learning will have a great start in life. Among other things, it is believed they will develop self confidence, a positive self-image, social and language skills, curiosity, persistence and concentration.

The Toy Library is located in the same building complex as the Tatura Children's Centre and the Tatura Community Centre in Kerford Street, and is open for borrowing for two sessions per week, Monday 3:45-4:30 and Saturday 10-11. These sessions are staffed by members. We have a huge range of educational toys so please come and see what we have to offer. New members are always welcome.

A family membership costs $30 per annum, and each family member can borrow any two toys plus one puzzle as often as they like. Toys can be borrowed for two weeks at a time. There is also an option for those who want to borrow occasionally, such as grandparents or carers, who want to borrow only a couple of times a year.

Dhurringile Community Action Group continues to meet with the Prison on a regular basis to discuss key themes outlining current activities at the prison. The Department of Justice acknowledges the advisory committee and appreciates the ongoing relationship with the local Dhurringile community.

Congratulations to Gabby Chessells who will be making her way up to Queensland, Rehabilitation Centre in Noosa. Gabby recently qualified as a Speech Therapist.

ALL SAINTS GUILD NEWS A Happy 2015 to all! I am sure most organisations have enjoyed the Christmas break relaxing with family and friends, without having to worry about dates in the diary! It’s fun, fellowship and sometimes tiring but if that is what it takes to help those in need – who is complaining? No one, not volunteers anyway.

The All Saints Guild Annual Meeting was held on February 13 at 1.30pm beginning with Holy Communion. The Annual meeting was held at 2.00pm and was chaired by Rev Jude. French Theme Community Tennis Meal Deal

DHURRINGILE TENNIS CLUB What a summer of tennis the club has displayed. Dhurringile entered in the Australian Open (AO )Tennis Blitz. Due to the club’s efforts and involvement with the program the club was ranked 59th out of 257 clubs from around Australia. The club was awarded French player, Jeremy Chardy. With French influences within the community a ‘French Theme’ meal deal was held in his honour. Unfortunately, Jeremy Chardy was not able to attend the event, nor fill-in, in a senior side due to his AO commitments.

Members from DTC were invited to attend Tennis Victoria 2015 Volunteers’ Breakfast, proudly sponsored by ANZ Bank. Club volunteers Lisa Niglia and Kate Flynn attended the early morning breakfast which was held at the MCG Olympic room. Over 100 dedicated tennis volunteers, administrators,

coaches and officials attended the event.

Tennis Victoria acknowledged Clubs and individuals from across Victoria for their contribution to their clubs.

Dhurringile tennis club is a strong community base club and has always had great volunteers overseeing the running of the facility. “For a small club and community, we are fortunate to have two senior sides in the GMLTA and two junior sides in the Shepparton Junior Association and host the ANZ Junior League competition,” said Club secretary Lisa Niglia.

“The club plays within the spirit of the game and gives everyone the opportunity to play this great game that we all love and see it continue in the Goulburn Valley.” Senior and Junior Club championships are to commence Sunday March 1. Members will be informed.

ROTARY CLUB, TATURA Assistance for Tatura and district university students The Bruce Anderson Scholarship is now available for first year students from Tatura and surrounding districts for university studies in 2015.

A one thousand dollar grant is available to assist a student with living expenses while studying.

Dr Bruce Anderson (1936 to 2009) was a vet in the Tatura district for thirty-five years, serving the rural communities in both private practice and in the public service. He also served the community as an active member and passionate supporter of the Rotary Club of Tatura. Bruce is continuing his support for the community with his bequest, which funds this scholarship.

The Rotary Club of Tatura is encouraging all first year university students from Tatura and the surrounding districts, from Mooroopna to Rochester, to apply for this scholarship.

Sarah Maskell is our new member of staff and she is teaching Grade 1 / 2 this year. Sarah graduated with Honors from La Trobe University Bendigo and was born in Nyah. Her interests are netball and swimming.

Sarah’s classroom looks wonderfully inviting and she is very excited to be part of the Junior School at TPS. Whole school assembly is held every Monday at 2.50 p.m. Depending on the weather, it is either in the Amphitheatre or in our Learning Street.

At our first assembly for 2015 we presented our School, House and Bus Captains, as well as our Junior School Council Representatives with their badges. At the end of 2014 the whole school had to cast their vote for School Captains. The elected School Captains are Liam Morrison and Gabi Paglia. Congratulations, and we are sure they will prove worthy of such a responsible role.

We continue to offer Canteen one day a week, a fortnightly Hot Dog Day and After School Care with Fiona Brown. Cliff Doornkamp will also conduct 20 minute lessons for guitar and keyboard at the school every Thursday.

Mrs Kimmorley and Mrs Bathman will also be taking a group of students to perform in the State School Spectacular later in the year. This involves lots of dance practice, sizing up costumes and loads of fun! They look forward to two sleepovers with the children and those parents who are able to assist at a Guest House in South Yarra.

Term 1 will involve the Information Night for each grade, Parent Teacher Interviews and Toolamba Athletics. This term is a short one and will conclude Friday March 27.

Our club resumed activities on Monday, February 2, 2015 after a two month recess.

We had a lovely cold luncheon followed by the monthly meeting. It was pleasing to see so many members attending as there were quite a few on the sick list. We hope those that have been in hospital or not feeling the best will soon be up and about again. Our thoughts are with you all. Next meeting will be Monday, March 2 starting 1.30 p.m.

DHURRINGILE PRIMARY SCHOOL It has been a very busy start to the year at Dhurringile Primary School.

We have welcomed four Foundation students into the school who are settling well into school life. Thanks to Dhurringile Prison’s Community Workers we started the year with beautifully landscaped grounds as well as minor repairs being made.

The students have been studying the ways that the media try to persuade us to purchase an item or service. They then created their own new product to sell and filmed a commercial about their product. The students then watched and critiqued each other’s performance.

There is a long history of neckwear worn by soldiers (Roman), whether as part of a uniform or as a symbol of belonging to a particular group.

Some form of neckwear other than the outdoor scarf can be traced intermittently through many centuries.

The modern necktie spread by Europeans traces back to the time of the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648) when Croatian mercenaries from the Croatian Military Frontier in French service, wearing their traditional small, knotted neckerchiefs, aroused the interest of the Parisians. Due to the slight difference between the Croatian word for Croats, Hrvati, and the French word, Croates, the garment gained the name cravat (cravate in French). The boy-king Louis XIV began wearing a lace cravat about 1646, when he was seven, and set the fashion for French nobility. This new article of clothing started a fashion craze in Europe; both men and women wore pieces of fabric around their necks. From its introduction by the French king, men wore lace cravats, or jabots, that took a large amount of time and effort to arrange. These cravats were often tied in place by cravat strings, arranged neatly and tied in a bow.

A tie clip (also tie slide, tie bar, or the clasp) is a clothing accessory that is used to clip a tie to the underlying shirt front, preventing it from swinging and ensuring that the tie hung straight, resulting in a neat, uniform appearance. The clips are commonly made of metal and often have decorative patterns or embellishments. Some clips have a small badge indicating membership to a club or some other affiliation, or some other commemorative token, in a similar manner to the way in which ties themselves may be used as signs of membership.

The use of tie clips gained prominence during the 1920s, during which period the use of straight ties made of delicate materials such as silk became more fashionable, and they largely came to replace the more traditional tie pin.

A LITTLE LIGHT AMBIGUITY

Now before you start thinking, “Oh here we go. Another one of these English language lessons creeping in to my Bulletin,”….wait; read on, you might find yourself enjoying a giggle or two. But first I need to ask, what is ambiguity? Ok. I know that you know what it is, but not everyone is as clever or knowledgeable or even wants to be, so trust me it’s worth its wait (or should that be weight) in gold to find out. (?)

Ambiguity is when a word, phrase or statement contains more than one meaning. Not always clear or obvious, but I think you will understand this example.

Young Fred needs a part for his bicycle and visits his local bike shop where he proceeds to explain what he needs.

“I’m gonna keep my old bike and do it up, but I need a new seat as this one’s no good it hurts my bum. I’m gonna paint it blue.”

Assistant. “What do you want to paint your bum blue for?”

Here’s another example: Tatura resident. “Did you hear about the kidnapping in Shepparton last week?”

Second Tatura resident, “No, what happened?”

Tatura resident. “They woke him up.”

And another; “What did the woodworm say when he went to the pub?”

Answer: “Is the bartender here?”

For those needing an explanation, read, ‘Is the bar tender here?’

Now these examples may seem to be just jokes, but scholars have been studying ambiguity in all its forms for many years; analysing their various components, from the insane to the more historic and downright stupid.

Sometimes thought of as just a ‘play on words’ they are often held to ridicule when exposed by the public, often for the public’s benefit. Like this notice seen in a park, ‘If your dog does a poo, please place it in the bin.’ Poor pooch!

Here’s some other signs to take notice of, warnings of a sort…

‘Caution Pedestrians Slippery When Wet.’ Or, ‘No trespassing without permission.’ Now as all this is intended to divert you from the more serious side of life, let’s see how ambiguity in common exchanges with others might catch you out.

Optometrist: “Have your eyes ever been checked?” Pretty She: “No, they’ve always been blue.”

Waiter: “We have almost everything on the menu”.

Diner: “I can see that. Could I have a clean one please?”

This might be an oldie, but it bears repeating. Old dear goes into the Post office with a bundle of letters and asks for twenty stamps, which she gets. Expecting them to be put on her letters, she asks, “Do I have to put these on myself?” I’m sure by now you can guess the answer.

One final tilt to the lighter side of ambiguity is this classic for golfers everywhere.

Little fellow decides to spend the evening at a local dance and asks a rather tall girl if she’d like a whirl or two on the dance floor. As they moved around, he kept falling out of step landing on her toes a few times.

Eventually he offered an apology by telling her that he was a little stiff from golf. His dancing partner replied to the top of his head, “I don’t care where your from, stop standing on my b***y feet!”

Friend: “How was your trip to the NT? Did you see Ayer’s rock?”

Traveller: “Never saw it move!”

PEEL, ISLE OF MAN Part 2. Island of Vikings, Myths and Superstitions by Harry Gorry In my last post, I shared breakfast with a Peel Kipper (smoked herring) and a superstition that threatened the lives of the fishing crew who caught it, just one of a long list of folklore and myth that still exists in this ancient fishing village; home to my grandfather and his family. And many families before that, I was later to discover. I was also on the island to learn more about a Viking burial on nearby Peel castle and a beaded necklace found around the neck of the tenth-century remains of a female Viking; named by archaeologists as, ‘The Pagan Lady’.

The Isle of Man is an island of ancient cultures, macabre stories and centuries of mingled facts and fiction woven into modern myth. It lies midway between Britain and Ireland in the Irish Sea and is some 572 km sq. It’s an elongated north-south facing island. Much of the coastline is high, inhospitable cliffs with the endless waves from passing currents pounding in a millennium of rhythm.

A kipper breakfast is not something eaten in a hurry. The meal is a nibbling of bones and smoked flesh. I decided it was best not to try the same again as I realised my dallying almost cost me my transport to Douglas, the island capital on the eastern side of the island. Sitting on the local bus, just behind a rather vocal lady and her visitor friend, I learned we were passing a high, grassy hill, its steep slope falling towards us. At its base was an outcrop of ancient jagged slate dotted with trees looking much like it would have done, centuries before. Called, ‘The Witches Hill’ the rear was a gentler slope, providing easy access to the top. My fellow passenger continued to explain in quite a graphic way, the fate of those accused of witchcraft in Peel centuries before. “They would take the poor soul accused of witchcraft,” she said with some relish, “and put her in a horse and cart with an old herring barrel and take her to the top of the hill and then seal her in the barrel, turn it on its side and let it roll down the hill to the trees and rocks below. If she survived, she was not a witch.” I imagined for a moment, looking at the steep decent and what lay beyond, how anyone could survive to claim she was not a witch.

No-one back then ever did.

Soon we were in Douglas, a wide sheltered bay of storied tourist accommodation with hills behind, almost at the back door in places.

This is a city built for tourists, from early mobile Victorians to today’s jet-setting petrol heads. Sometimes calm, sometimes in fever. Today was calm.

From my bus stop on the esplanade, I found my way up to the Manx Museum and an impressive two-story building contoured into the hill.

I stepped into a world of both today and antiquity. Just past the tourist shop was a display of the island’s motor-cycle racing history complete with the previous year’s winning machine, a brightly-painted and commercially endorsed two-wheeled example of the modern world and a major drawcard for the economy of the island. But I went elsewhere.

My museum map set me on a quest. To find the Viking Room and with a nudge to early pottery in passing and a glance at Edwardian furniture, I finally stepped inside a small room that instantly took me to an ancient time, where I was perhaps among the world of my forebears.

Peel Castle. of a Viking burial long boat complete with a number of items that included the warrior’s sword, broken into three places to prevent its use by his enemies. Burials like these are found throughout the island, usually on high ground overlooking the sea. I turned my attention to a waist-high display case and starred down at the seventy-one colourful varieties of polished stone that lay there, newly threaded in the shape of the original necklace.

Here was the Pagan Lady I had travelled so far to see. From these stones, archaeologists were able to prove that The Vikings were exploring Europe prior to the 10th Century.

Many of the stones have been identified as originating in Italy and the Northern Baltic and were formed from glass, amber and jet. I found myself asking questions. Why was this young woman so revered by another? She must have been a princess indeed to claim such recognition and to be buried with such precious objects. But who was she? Perhaps the castle would tell me more, tomorrow. Meanwhile, it was dinner time.

Having eaten at a restaurant in Douglas, I caught the last bus back to Peel and after a freshen-up in my room and a glance through my window at the sombre mist enshrouded castle, dull orange in the artificial light, I went downstairs to the bar.

With a beer in hand, I sat listening to the bar chatter. A local, a rather stout fellow had captured an audience. He began to tell the story of a ghostly dog that had haunted Peel castle for centuries. Known as ‘The Moogy Doo’, he described this apparition as being, ‘a large, black longhaired hound with a howl that could send a sane man mad’. I listened as he, sure of his audience, told his story. During a siege of the castle at the height of the English civil war, soldiers were required to lock certain gates at night and return the keys to their captain along a dark, damp passageway deep inside the castle. Aware of the legend even then, soldiers travelled in pairs for on occasion howls from a creature as yet unseen had been reported and dismissed as the wail of the wind and the

pounding sea that surrounded the rocky island.

One night, one fellow empowered by an extra ration of ale, decided to return the keys to his captain alone, saying he was, ‘nay afeert of any abominations.’

He did return the keys, but when he emerged from the passageway his hands were ‘uncontrollably shaking and his long brown matted hair had gone completely grey’.

Witnesses said at the time that low, deep howls echoed along the passage from where he came.

The door to the passage was immediately closed and locked. Not long after, the passage was sealed, but even today there are strange

unexplained wind-like sounds that echo the howls of a large dog. Is it still there? Trapped in the passageway?

I felt something at my feet. A patron’s dog had decided to share my space, stretching out under the table. I leaned forward to give it a pat. Was it reassuring me that what I’d heard was just legend, or reminding me that everything in this ancient island is truth, a living truth that continues today? I retired none the wiser. Tomorrow I would explore this circle of ancient walls called Peel Castle and see for myself the Viking graves and the site of the ‘Pagan Lady’ necklace.

2015 is now well under way, and by the time this is published we’ll be into the season of Lent. Lent is the six weeks leading up to Easter, beginning with Ash Wednesday which is a day of confession, and ending with Easter Sunday when we celebrate Christ’s Resurrections. Traditionally Lent involves fasting, as a way of remembering our dependence on God to provide for all our needs, although the modern tradition of fasting from chocolate may remind us more of the blessings and excess that we enjoy in Australia.

Our time through Lent this year is particularly exciting as we prepare as a church for ‘Exploring Easter’. This will be a week long interactive community art event over Easter which illustrates the Christian Easter story.

We have been blessed to receive funding from Greater Shepparton City Councils art funding to help this happen and enable it to be a free event. People from the congregation, the local primary schools, other churches, men’s shed and individuals within the community are already busy creating, knitting, painting, designing items to help people engage with the Christian Easter story. There’s room for more creative people to be involved, contact me on 5824 1170 for more information. I’ll be at Transition Tatura’s “Play in the Piaza” on Saturday Feb 28 with some recycled craft ideas that will feature in one of the Exploring Easter scenes, all welcome to come and create!

In other news, we have been blessed this year to have a number of people from Vanuatu joining us for church services. Their singing is amazing as is their joy and passion for life and for God. At an impromptu BBQ dinner recently, over 30 people from Vanuatu and around 20 from the church enjoyed eating, singing and laughing together. One of the church ladies heard that they were finding it cold at night here and we were able to organise blankets for most of our new friends. I trust we can continue to mutually bless each other during their six months of working here.

Mainly music has also restarted on Wednesday’s at 10am, with a great core group of mums, children and helpers. All pre-schoolers are welcome with a parent or caregiver for a time of music, dancing, play, morning tea and loads of fun and laughter.

It seems that there are so many observers of people in leadership but too few people willing to be team participants. Then, when someone with reasonably well formed motivation does step into leadership, there are often so many others ready to be critical of their performance.

Good leadership surely needs effective vision, active listening, deep reflection, eager collaboration and communication. It also needs decisive action that will not please everyone and that will require perseverance before the benefits are realised. We are the beneficiaries of many such leaders of days gone by but where are they today and where

PETER’S PONDERINGS are the people that will loyally follow, even through the tough times, while giving helpful feedback that nurtures the leader and the team?

It seems to me that we have fallen quickly into a lifestyle of ‘fast food’ and ‘opinion polls’ that come in a variety of shapes and sizes. This lifestyle is about quick fixes and what feels good to the individual and I don’t believe this can be sustained on a national or a personal level.

We need to be taking action on this at a community and a national level although there are aspects of that which may daunt many of us. This must not stop us from participating in the battle in those places but a foundational step is to address this disorientation in us

personally. Our creator God is the ultimate leader. While we can never fully know His greatness or purposes, He lovingly calls us to seek His opinion of our life and follow His purposes. Despite the faithfulness He has shown in sustaining us and the way, the truth and the life He offers us, too many people choose to cling to their own opinions, ignore His leadership in their lives and take the quicker path for their own instant convenience.

I encourage you to listen to and reflect on Jesus’ words to the people and to participate more constructively as part of our creator God’s team. A good place to find a concise section of Jesus’ words is in that part of the Bible known as Matthew chapters 5, 6 and 7, or just Google that!
