TATURA GIRL GUIDES FASHION PARADE

First of all we would like to thank the community and district for supporting the Tatura Guides’ Fashion Parade held on July 10. The $1,000.00 raised will go towards the upgrading of the Guide kitchen and the wiring for the new smart metre. A special thank you to our local girls Lois, Ursula, Iola and Clare who modelled the senior guide uniforms of yesteryear for us. They really looked the part! They also modelled outfits from the Velvet Emporium and did a great job! All Guide uniforms were hired from the Melbourne Guide Shop for the occasion. It was interesting to note how small the uniforms were in comparison to the sizes of today. Our own Guides had a lot of fun, especially trying on the fashions and jewellery from Tatura’s Velvet Emporium. Continued pg 4…

The packed hall enjoyed the music of Merle Krause who played the old favourites on the keyboard. Thank you Merle, you have helped the Guides over many years with your musical talents. The MC was Glenda McLeod who did an absolutely wonderful job. Glenda was a Brownie and went into Ranger Guides so we dare say this would have brought back memories for her. Diane Day had the difficult job of choosing the winners of the Apron Competition. The winner of the Most Original was Beth Chamberlain with her beautiful white embroidered apron. She generously donated the prize of $50 back to the Guides to help with the kitchen renovations, a wonderful gesture. Edie Fleming won second prize for the prettiest apron. She won a boxed tea mug to go with her very pretty, hand worked apron. The winner of the raffle, a travel bag, kindly donated by the Tatura Pharmacy, was won by Betty Cruickshank of Korumburra. The second prize went to Fay Alexander who won a beautifully hand painted plate, donated by our local folk artist Ursula Weitacher. It was a lovely afternoon, enjoyed by everyone. WATERWHEEL HITS THE WATER
Michael and Diana Sacco have recently been on a ten day cruise to the South Pacific Islands. Many would know Michael (or Mick to some) from Waterwheel Tyres in Ross Street, Tatura. The couple first flew to Sydney where they joined a ship, The Carnival Spirit, that visited Vanuatu, Mystery Island, Lifou and Noumea. Michael commented to me how 'enormous' the boat appeared to him. It offered patrons much entertainment with different activities, shopping, games, fun nights, choice of restaurants, bars and buffet. He said the stage shows in the auditorium were a particular highlight and both he and his wife would highly recommend the cruise to anyone. One of the main points of the ship life was that one could do as much or little as the individual wished with so many activities, functions and events available. Michael and Diana found the whole holiday terrifically relaxing and enjoyed shopping, sightseeing and a lot of snorkelling at different stops they had along the way and generally enjoyed the breaking of their day to day routine at home. Michael said he found it very interesting to be in another country where the locals were speaking in French. With Michael back into his busy business, though "very rested", he must feel the holiday was a long way back .... but what memories! Janice Dreyer

TATURA CHILDREN’S CENTRE Staying safe, healthy and happy at Tatura Children’s Centre. Meeting the individual needs of all children lies at the heart of the Early Years Framework. Every child deserves the best possible start in life and support to fulfil their potential. The relationship between the child’s family and TCC educators is critical for your child’s wellbeing, health, development and progress. We believe at TCC that children benefit most when this is a trusting and mutually supportive partnership. When educators work together with families openly, the transition for your child is positive and meaningful. Educators can gain extensive knowledge about each child, and their family can assist educators to develop strategies that are consistent with home, reflect common values, and provide learning opportunities. TCC recognises each child’s health needs by ensuring information about the child is discussed upon enrolment. A child’s needs could include asthma, diabetes or Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, an allergy such as a bee sting or hay fever or a food allergy such as nuts. TCC educators ensure that all needs and medical conditions are documented and displayed clearly in the child’s room and kitchen. Centre educators will work with families to ensure any food allergies are addressed with the assistance from the centre’s cook. Each food allergy health plan will be assisted with an individual medical certificate to eliminate any foods. Parents will have access to what the child has eaten throughout the day through message boards, communication books or verbal communication upon pick up. Should your child have a known allergy, an individual first aid action plan will be displayed in the child’s room. Other centre educators will be made aware of this during staff meetings, and notice boards. All educators at TCC have a current first aid certificate and will follow the first aid action plan and procedures. Therefore, we always ensure at TCC that your child’s needs are always being met so they are safe and supported to be healthy and active when engaging in our service.

Communities Shaping the Future: A day of conversations and films There will be five inspiring speakers coupled with four thought-provoking short films, along with other activities throughout the day. Our principal films are The Earth Wins (winner of ACS Gold Tripod in May 2014), The Human Cost of Power, Done with the Wind - sorting the fact from the fiction, and The Power of Community. We are excited to have the following speakers attend this event: Kate Auty (former Victorian Commissioner for the Environment), David Karoly (School of Earth Sciences, Melbourne University), Fiona Armstrong (Fellow of the Centre for Policy Development), Peter Seligman (Melbourne Energy Institute, University of Melbourne) and Hans Baer (Anthropologist, Melbourne University). On Saturday August 30 Transition Tatura will host an important event in Tatura, our inaugural film festival, Communities Shaping the Future: a Day of Conversations and Films. This festival will not only be a first for Tatura but it will be a first for the region and we intend for it to become an annual event. The focus of the day will be on how local communities such as Tatura can empower themselves to shape and rethink their future with the goals of localisation (live local, work local, shop local), healthier communities, assured livelihoods, energy security and reclaiming the sense of community and community spirit which has been lost by many populations over the last few decades. Initiatives that rebuild community resilience and reduce emissions will be the primary tools to achieve these critical objectives.
The festival will be held at the Gallery Café and attendees will be provided morning and afternoon tea and lunch. Robert, Mark and Ross have organised a great line-up of speakers and films for Transition Tatura’s ‘Communities Rethinking the Future’ day of films and conversations at the Gallery Cafe on Saturday August 30. AUSTRALIA POST HELPS COMMUNITY Tatura RSL President Robert Mathieson, would like to thank Australia Post and the Tatura Post Office for their extreme generosity in providing everything needed for the barbecue held on July 11. The Tatura Post Office donated absolutely super prizes for the raffle the RSL held, and the winners were, 1st Prize - Mrs Eileen Quick (nearing 100 years of age - good on you Eileen) 2nd Prize was won by Mrs Sheila Gregg – lucky girls! President Mathieson would also like to thank IGA for supplying the barbecue and gas needed, for their sizzling sausages and onions! Australia Post asked Mick and Sharon Jeffers of the Post Office to nominate a worthy community organisation, and they suggested the RSL to help in their fund raising efforts. ANGLICAN GUILD NEWS Nine members of the Guild braved a very cold day to attend the meeting on August 8, with apologies from four. Some of our members attended the Annual Tatura Hospital Meeting on July 24 which was very enjoyable. Our long serving member, Olive Stammers, celebrated her 90th birthday on August 13. Olive was our treasurer for many years and is still the first member we ask to take the entry donations at our functions. Well done Olive, your sponges, sandwiches, whatever were always most appreciated. We pray Olive that you will have many more birthdays to come. Another birthday celebrated at the other end of the scale, another generation, Annaliese Gray turned three and was given a special treat. The little ones always enjoy these special days. ‘mainly music’ is from 10am – 12pm when the pre-schoolers enjoy music and songs. This is followed by snacks for the children and then playtime with toys, while the mums and dads enjoy morning tea and a relaxing chat. In the shed, the members have been busy making toy garages and dolls houses for the Tatura Children’s Centre. Sales of myna bird traps continues at 2-3 per week and there has been a steady flow of furniture projects for restoration.
Not much is happening in the garden at the moment, but some lawn seed has been sown to extend the lawn area outside the club house.

Lisa, who is a qualified Personal Trainer and Registered Nurse, is aware of the importance of keeping up to date both within the health & fitness industry. RED CROSS CENTENARY CELEBRATION The local Tatura/Harston Red Cross Branch celebrated the centenary of the International and the Australian Red Cross at their Annual Meeting on August 23 ,when we entertained visitors from other units and friends. After the meeting a DVD of the work of Red Cross Past, Present and future was shown of 100 years of People Helping People. Then ladies of the present branch Tatura/ Harston gave some history of the local branches of Toolamba West whose name was later changed to Tatura East, Harston, Byrneside and Tatura. It was a revelation to learn of their enterprising ways of making money. There were the usual raffles, catering for field days and clearing sales ,street stalls, card nights, garden parties, etc.. They collected at football matches. At one particular sale there was a ‘Hare Shoot’ which brought in extra money and Flanagan’s store was thanked for providing the cartridges at wholesale prices. Then there was the garden party at which the raffle prizes were two frocks and a ‘heifer’. Other activities in the war years were the making and packing of biscuits to be sent to the soldiers in Vietnam and knitted articles for the soldiers abroad. One interesting activity was the collection around the district of horse hair which was sent to Headquarters for mattress stuffing during the war. Of course during and just after the war, ration coupons were necessary and the ladies of one of the units would bring along a teaspoon of tea for catering etc. Of course this was all in the past. Our present branch has dropped in membership and not in the thirties and forties as they were then and our efforts are mostly confined to the March Red Cross Calling and ‘Blumes Days’. Tatura/Harston will be having a ‘Blumes Day’ on Friday September 5 in the Uniting Church, Thomson St. Tatura at 2pm. Entry $6. BILL MILNER RECEIVES LIONS CLUB AWARD At the recent district changeover of Lions 2014/15, Bill Milner was surprised to be presented with the prestigious Geoff Callander award. This was awarded in recognition of Bill’s ten years of service on the Lions Disaster Relief Trust, including five years as Chairman. He didn’t intend to attend this meeting, held in Melbourne, but a friend was quite insistent that he do so, not letting on to Bill that he was on the list of recipients. The work involved helping communities and families recover from drought, fire and floods, which entailed a lot of organisation. Bill said the most rewarding part of his work was helping people on a one on one basis. He experienced some heartbreaking moments, such as seeing burly tradies almost in tears, when they collected tools from the stores of new and donated goods to enable them to rebuild or to help others. During this time on the Trust, over ten years,

the Lions distributed in excess of three million dollars. The most challenging was the 2009 bushfires when the Trust received some 750 donations from Lions Clubs all over the world, including 1000 pounds received from the Lions Club in Hastings England! This enabled the Trust to help communities with major projects such as the Marysville Hub (community Centre), the community house at Kinglake, laundries in the temporary village of Marysville, five tool libraries at various sites, also tools for tradesmen who had lost their gear in the fires. This is only part of the great work that service clubs do, but Bill said it is the most rewarding part of his 37 years in Lions. We acknowledge the work of all volunteers, who are a dedicated lot. TATURA PROBUS CLUB The July meeting was very well attended and we were very interested to listen to our Member behind the Badge, Maureen Johnson. Maureen has lived in this area for the majority of her life and has five brothers. Maureen said, “I loved dress ups, and as I didn’t have dolls, what better than three walking, talking, live ones! I spent time cajoling my brothers and it was great fun for me”. Maureen married and went to live in Woolongong where her husband’s family lived. Whilst there, she worked for David Jones, which impressed her mother greatly. Maureen has a naturally cheerful and vibrant personality so gaining employment was never an issue for her. Maureen and Cheryl came back to Victoria to nurse her terminally ill father, and not long after her dad’s passing; Maureen received the news that she was diagnosed with Primary Billiary Cirrhosis of the liver, and would eventually require a transplant. This came as a great surprise to

Maureen and her doctors as she had led a relatively quiet life and was not a drinker. The transplant has proved to be a real success with a few little hiccups now and again. Maureen says her greatest achievement was the birth of her daughter Cheryl and her two grandsons, Dylan and Tate. Cheryl has been a rock for Maureen through some hard times and she and the boys, with Maureen, are a very happy united family. Thank you Maureen, a lovely insight of your life. After morning tea the guest speaker, Vince Vincitorio told us a little of his life. Coming to Australia as a nine year old boy, he told us of being born in the village of San Marco, actually in a stable. “No, said Vince, I cannot walk on water!” Vince’s father came to Australia to pave the way for the family and they were without him for two years. On arriving in Australia, the complete family set off together and so began their life in Tatura. A favourite place of Vince’s, as a teenager, was Kings Café where he could listen to music which he has always loved. This is where he first caught sight of his future wife Rhonda. Rhonda was with her grandmother and was dressed in very colourful clothes, Vince refers to her as his, ‘rainbow girl’! Rhonda and Vince are very happily married with four children, Kerry, Rodd, Jody and Kyle and eleven grandchildren. A very interesting life that is only skimmed over here. Vince’s book, ‘A Small Boy from Italy’ is available from The Velvet Emporium, a very entertaining read. Thank you very much Vince for your visit. Murchison Historical Society receives many enquiries from people researching their family history and a recent enquiry was in connection to the Roberts family, a very notable family in both Rushworth and Murchison. In particular, a handsome memorial stands in the Murchison Riverbank gardens as well as two memorial plaques in Christ Church Anglican Church in Murchison honouring the death of Lt. James Charles Roberts who was killed at the Boer War. James was born in 1872 and Baptised in St. Paul’s Anglican Church Rushworth as his family were storekeepers in the town. He attended the Primary School in Rushworth and his secondary Education was undertaken in Melbourne where he gained his Matriculation Certificate from Carlton College. In later years his family lived in Murchison and ran the Coffee Palace that was situated opposite the present day swimming pool and he attended Christ Church Murchison regularly. After graduating from Melbourne University as a Civil Engineer, James spent some time working on the family farm at Moora then returned to University to study medicine. He was a member of the Murchison detachment of the Victorian Mounted Rifles and went to South Africa to serve in the Boer War. Sadly, James met his death in February 1900 during a fierce battle at Rensburg South Africa, when greatly outnumbered by the enemy. His parents were John Henderson Roberts and Ellen Sayers (Roberts) and they had 10 children. Jennifer Vallely who is enquiring about the Roberts family, is keen to know if there are any Roberts family in the area. Her father’s name was Colin Henderson Roberts and his father’s name was Albert Victor Roberts who married Anna Maude Draper (Roberts). Albert was James Charles brother. SHEPPARTON ADVENTURE CLUB MID WEEK WALK In June seven warmly dressed walkers studied the skies cautiously before leaving Shepparton for the Kamarooka National Park. With a short and windy stop at Elmore it was off along the Raywood and Tennyson Roads to the Mulga Dam picnic spot where the forest protected the group from the wind. After morning tea we began the walk along Black Rock Flat track, an easy walk with only the slightest of inclines along the way amongst mallee, grey and yellow box. The first of the wattles was just bursting into the brightest balls of yellow, a spectacular sight in the otherwise dull green and grey of the park. Despite the rain that had fallen in recent times, a combination of infertile soils and stony ground showed little undergrowth except for bright green mosses and various lichens. The group arrived at Rush Dam for lunch and was entertained by a kangaroo or two going by and a black wallaby who came over the top of a nearby bank to give us the once over. Richard’s GPS took us back through the bush where several ‘out of season’ flowers were spotted along with a variety of magnificent fungi. Len’s GPS and pedometer kept us up to date on many statistics but the rest of us were more concerned about how many steps we had walked – had we earned a coffee in Elmore? Of course, we had. Coffee was enjoyed along with a few hot chips before we returned. Thank you, Richard, for your thorough preparation and for turning what could have been an ordinary walk into something special. Barbara Brown In July Eight Adventure Club members assembled at the beginning of the Shepparton walking track at Archer Street on Wednesday July 23 for another of our pleasant monthly walks. Before setting off we organised a car shuffle, leaving cars at the North end of the track, on The Boulevard just beyond Jordan’s Bend. The day had started with another frost, so we
Members enjoying the walk on the Shepparton walking track left hoping and assuming the weather would develop into a lovely day. The going was very flat; the track was smooth and sealed so we headed off at a brisk pace. We soon settled into a comfortable rhythm with people having pleasant conversations in small groups as we strode along. The track winds along near the Broken River bank, under the Melbourne Shepparton railway line, to the confluence of the Broken with the Goulburn River. We hadn’t seen many birds, when we came across the U3A bird watching group, several of whom we knew. They had about 35 species on their list for the morning, even though they hadn’t walked far. After about 6kms we emerged from the bush onto the lake side track and then to Aquamoves, where we stopped for a coffee (some bought; some brought). Once back on the track we made our way under High street via the tunnel at the old Wharf – a first for several of us. From there we crossed Monash Park amongst the cows and headed off around Princess Park. After a spell along The Boulevard we passed behind the houses on the river side of the street and back into some lovely bush. It was hard to believe we
were so close to suburbia. Here we did start to see a range of birds, including the White Throated Tree Creeper and The Red Browed Finch, both lovely little birds. Out from the bush, along the river bank and then suddenly we were at the end. Several of the group were carrying various methods of measuring the morning’s data. Dianne’s phone app. indicated we did 11.10 km at an average speed of 5.1km/h. We burnt 675Kcals.and lost .22litres of fluid. Disappointing to discover not enough to burn off our morning tea at Aquamoves!! It was good to do a walk close to home and appreciate what we have here on our doorstep. The no travelling meant we were able to do a good long walk and be finished before lunch. It also meant we didn’t have to do the sums and calculate our travelling costs! Thanks to Dianne who planned and lead the very enjoyable morning. Next month’s walk will be led by Maartje in the Goulburn River Mooroopna/Toolamba area, so we look forward to that and welcome anyone to join us. Howard Hanna

On Thursday July 31, the Guides walked around Lake Bartlett with Sam and Phyll, to experience what it would be like to have a disability. It was educational for the Guides to learn how it felt to be blind, not to see the beauty of Nature, etc., or to be deaf, not to hear directions or the joy of music, etc. Hopefully this will make the girls more aware of people with disabilities whom they may come across, and to be ready to help if needed. Coming Events: The Great Bunya Gathering in Queensland, International Camp. Three Tatura Guides have registered to attend but there is a limit to numbers from each state so there is no guarantee of a place. Canoeing is currently planned for November 8/9 with GGV qualified Leaders. Horse riding is also on the agenda – no dates available at this time. Leader Sam Crowe has been selected to attend the Asia Pacific Conference for Leaders of Youth, in Melbourne November 30 – December 6. The Val McNab Cook-Off was held on July 20 at the Mooroopna Secondary College. The domestic science rooms were buzzing with excited Tatura Guides as they prepared their two course meals. No winning rolling pin this year, but only a few points separated the teams; the Leaders were very proud of the Guides’ efforts and all the meals were very well thought out. Special Thank you: We are most grateful to the Tatura Lions Club who presented a cheque for $300 to our Commissioner Marj. Earl and Phyll Bramley. THE CADILLAC MAN I’ve been a car enthusiast for many years, since I passed my licence test when I was eighteen years and one day old. However, I’m not a rev head, or petrol head, as the youngies say. In fact, my daughter Joanne says I’m the slowest driver in Victoria! Compared to me she is a lead foot although Suzanne, my other daughter is the opposite, hanging on to the steering wheel of her slow Daihatsu like it’s getting away from her. I’ve always liked class cars like Ferraris, Cadillacs, Rolls Royces and Bentleys etc, but I’ve leant more towards the Cadillac, especially the models that came out in the 50’s. I saw Elizabeth Taylor driving a Cadillac convertible in the film ‘A place In the Sun’, and in my mind, I was sitting right next to her. She didn’t know it but I had a hankering for that Caddie and to be honest, a hankering for her too but unfortunately we never met. Most oil barons have Cadillacs. Elvis Presley had one and the story goes that he noticed a middle-aged woman admiring his car. He said, “Do you like it?” “Yes,” she replied. He handed over the keys and said, “It’s yours!” Some people have even left instructions in their wills to have their last ride in a Cadillac hearse. The Cadillac Auto Company has a long history commencing in 1903 and have many firsts to their credit. They were the first car company to install a starter motor, getting rid of the cumbersome and often dangerous crank handle. The Caddie was the first car with a V8 motor and they even had a V16 for many years. That must have been a great motor. The auto transmission was another first too. During WW2, Cadillac helped the war effort by supplying thousands of engines for planes and tanks.

Cadillac Eldorado Recently I’ve seen a Cadillac around the Goulburn Valley and by chance I met the owner, Colin Elliot, who is employed at the Point Cook Air Base. He couldn’t fit his car in his garage and obtained permission to park it in an aircraft hanger. Col’s Caddie is about 18 feet long which is quite large, and is full of luxury and safety items. Most modern cars have electric doors and windows but Colin’s car has had them for 42 years. It’s a 1972 model! It also has electric seat adjustments, a headlight failure sensor and a brake failure warning system as well. Sensing my admiration for their Cadillac, Colin and his sister Cheryl, kindly offered to take me for a spin when they had time. The great day arrived the following Saturday at 1900 hours (air force time), when the Cadillac announced its arrival outside my house with a loud roar. Cheryl was driving. It was my first ride in a Caddie and the first time I’d had a chauffeur. I felt the power of the mighty seven litre engine as we moved off and in my mind I was transported back to that memorable moment in the film although this time I had the Shepparton version of a young Elizabeth
Taylor at the wheel. When we finally arrived back home I was hoping the neighbours would be watching but alas, no-one saw this important event. Oh well, back to my 1.3 litre Mazda Metro automatic which wouldn’t pull the skin off a custard and does nought to fifty in 1½ hours! However, I have decided to buy a Cadillac on my next Pension Day because I’ve seen one and it’s in my price range. It should look impressive sitting on my stereo in its brand new Dinky Toy box. by Bryan Towner

FREE PUBLIC PERFORMANCES SHOWCASING SOME OF OUR REGION’S MOST TALENTED MUSICIANS The Goulburn Valley Concert Orchestra is set to bring some musical variety and fun to the Eastbank Centre with a series of free Sunday afternoon Chamber Concerts, beginning on Sunday, 31 August. Members of the orchestra will perform in smaller groups every Sunday afternoon for three weeks, providing music lovers with plenty of choice while showcasing the region’s finest instrumentalists and musicians. This year, the orchestra will feature past and present members performing as soloists or in small ensembles, with a different programme for each concert. Greater Shepparton City Council Manager Performing Arts and Conventions Steve Donelly said, “The support for the free concerts continues to grow each year, especially as the orchestra delivers separate programs over consecutive weekends that offer various styles which are attractive to a broad audience. “The orchestra has spent a lot of their time rehearsing so we’re looking forward to offering a high quality Chamber Series with something for everyone to enjoy.” Goulburn Valley Concert Orchestra Director Wendy Oakes said “Riverlinks and the Goulburn Valley Concert Orchestra are looking forward to once again presenting the annual GVCO Chamber Concert Series. Each program will feature GVCO members performing a wide variety of solos and chamber music in various instrumental combinations.” “The concerts are free to the public and promise to be as entertaining as ever so come along and hear the Champagne Flutes, Mozart's clarinet quintet, the Shepparton String Ensemble, trombone quartet, Willowmavin Quintet, piano trio, vocalists and so much more.” The series is proudly presented by Goulburn Valley Concert Orchestra in partnership with Riverlinks. The Goulburn Valley Concert Orchestra is a community orchestra based in Shepparton that includes people from all walks of life and from varied musical backgrounds. The group meet together weekly under the direction of Wendy Oakes to rehearse and prepare for their performances. Entry is free and bookings are not required.
DIRECT FROM DHURRINGILE Frustration has escalated amongst the community members of Dhurringile with another prisoner escaping on Friday August 1. Recently Dhurringile Action Committee Group (DACG) met to discuss this matter. A public meeting will be held on Tuesday, August 26 at 8pm with Regional Manager Mr John Duck and Management from the Prison, Mr Terry Jose will be present. Mr John Duck will be reporting to the community about what measures they have put in place and other developments regarding the improvement of prison security. The meeting is open to all. Recently Dhurringile Tennis Club (DTC) junior coordinator Lisa Niglia has met with Tennis Australia to discuss the future of junior tennis in the area. The DTC will adopt the ANZ Junior Tennis Hot Shots Competition. This will involve juniors from 10/u to play either Orange or Green Ball Tennis. League Competition is timed play to either 60-90 minutes, the competition games are reduced, fast tennis is implemented and each junior player will play 1 singles, and 2 doubles each. League Competition will be done in two blocks for 6 weeks over the summer with each team having 3 junior players per team. Children 10 years and above will be eligible to play especially if they are new to the sport. The club will continue to liaise with Tennis Australia to ensure a good quality program is delivered. If you wish to be part of Community Hot Shots RED BALL or the ANZ Tennis Hot Shots ORANGE or GREEN BALL League Competition, please contact Lisa on 0428 266 310. Cardio Tennis is also coming to the Club for teenagers and senior players, fun and fitness on the tennis court, while picking up some pointers on the tennis court. TATURA COMMUNITY HOUSE NEWS Tatura Community House has some really fun events coming up and we hope that you will all spread the word and bring your friends along. Saturday - September 27 – Buy, swap and sell ‘art and craft’ materials. Either book in for your own stall (at $10) to sell your precious items or come along and pick up some goodies, which we know will be in abundance. The idea is to buy swap or sell unwanted art and craft materials that you no longer use or need. As creative people we often hop from one creative endeavour to the next. You may just pick up what it is you need for your next project. Not to mention this is a good time to let go of the things you know you will never use again! We are not selling finished products, only the materials to create them. We think the day will be full of fun, creative, busy people, rushing to check out the goodies. I know I will be in bright and early! We are going to hold our Art Exhibition & Wine night again this year, as it was a wonderful success last year. The date is still to be advised for that one, but it will be some time in November. Our picket fence project ‘Colour our World’ will be launched soon. The project will work towards covering the front of the Community House building with painted pickets! This is a ‘community project’ and the plan is to involve as many of the community groups as possible with the creation of a bright, cheery, colourful and creative FACE OF TATURA. DHURRINGILE PRIMARY SCHOOL Farewell to Dhurringile’s Principal Jennifer Bannister The Dhurringile School Community farewelled their principal of eight and half years with a lovely afternoon tea. Jenny’s parting words were, “I would like to thank the whole Dhurringile School Community for its support over the last eight and a half years. It has been a pleasure to be a part of DPS. I have been very privileged to be able to welcome students as fearful tiny tots in Prep and farewell them seven years later as fearless, confident big kids.” We wish Jenny all the best for her future endeavours. Science Show On Tuesday July 29, we were very lucky to have some students from Victoria University
put on a Science Show for us. There were some amazing experiments with fantastic reactions that kept the children highly engaged. Kyabram Fauna Park Excursion The students participated in a Literacy Day at the Fauna Park last Thursday. Activities included animal art, My Life in the Wild, meeting an author – Roland Harvey and a tour of the Fauna Park. A great day was had by all. HISTORICAL SOCIETY AGM The Tatura & District Historical Society’s AGM will be held at the Museum on Wednesday August 27 at 7.30pm. Guest speaker will be Bruce Wilson on ‘An historic outlook on life with a wee bit of Scottish family history’. This year is the 30th anniversary of the reforming of the Historical Society. This occasion will be celebrated on Wednesday September 24 with the launch of a new audiovisual presentation on the wartime camps at 5.30pm at the Museum. These September school holidays will see the return of KidsFest, a favorite for many Victorian kids and their families. Spread over two big days, Saturday September 20 and Sunday 21, a number of big acts will descend on Kidstown with something to suit kids of all ages. The headline acts include Dirt Girl, Dr. Seuss - Cat in the Hat live show, How to Train your Dragon 2, Mr Peabody and Sherman and back by popular demand Humphrey B. Bear. KidsTown Playground Coordinator Steve Wilson said KidsFest is now in its ninth year and has established itself as a fun packed event for the whole family. “This year’s festival features a number of high profile children’s entertainers as well as sporting activities, African drumming and dancing workshops, Kids Karaoke tent, children’s crafts and loads of roving entertainment, Mr Wilson said. “There will also be a sideshow alley area with

TATURA PRIMARY SCHOOL Life at Tatura Primary School has been full of exciting activities and events so far this term! Every year level has completed an intensive week of swimming, with students becoming more confident in the water and improving their swimming techniques. Staff at Tatura PS would like to thank our wonderful parents who assisted during the week, ensuring the program was a great success. Our school was one of four in the Shepparton District who supported a local initiative ‘Lend a Hand- Bring a Can’, whereby families donated cans of food to Ronald McDonald House. We were very proud to support such a worthwhile cause, and assisted in filling two containers of tinned food which will be sent to Ronald McDonald House. Grade 5/6 students have recently returned from an action packed three day camp to Anglesea. Despite the wind, rain and cold, they managed to fit in many activities, such as bike riding, rock wall climbing, initiative games and the flying fox. There was a short break in the weather on Thursday and they escaped down the coast to Aireys Inlet lighthouse and took in the spectacular views. The brave (or mad!) went for a barefoot dip in

the ocean at Point Roadknight. The trip home was broken with a stop at Werribee Zoo where students were given the opportunity to tour the zoo and participated in an insightful educational session. We are very proud of the way in which our students represented our school. Tatura PS now has a Facebook page where parents and community members can keep track of events and activities. The Tatura Primary School Community page aims to keep families better informed and engaged. Finally we would like to welcome the many families who have enrolled their child in prep for 2015. We are still taking enrolments and are more than happy to take parents and children for a tour of our school.

I COULD HAVE DANCED ALL NIGHT… MY FAIR LADY, WHAT A SHOW! Wow, local theatre in our region is amazing! Knowing the calibre of country Victorian theatre productions my expectations were high as I entered Westside for the Shepparton Theatre Arts Group (STAG) rendition of My Fair Lady. STAG proceeded to obliterate all expectations with a stunning rendition of the tale of Professor Henry Higgins training the lower class Eliza Doolittle to become a lady. Set design can set the mood and enhance the theatre experience for the audience. I was in awe of the sets for My Fair Lady. They were beautifully designed and on such a scale as to completely immerse the audience in the world of Eliza and Henry. I was very impressed with the size of the buildings particularly the pub and Higgins’ residence which were both huge and detailed. On the subject of sets the scene changes were orchestrated with smooth, seamless precision by what appeared to be an invisible backstage army. The life of the backstage crew can be a challenge having to operate in the world of the ‘black out’ between scenes and in the dark backstage area which can be a crowded and chaotic realm. The My Fair Lady crew performed well rehearsed, efficient and quick changes in the backstage environment. The costumes in this production were well coordinated and designed. There was a great contrast between the two worlds of Eliza; the functional lower class townspeople and the upper class world of glamour. The costume highlight for me was the Royal Ascot race scene showcasing a range of black and white gowns and large hats. There was great variety amongst the designs and fabrics. And last but not least, the performers on stage and in the orchestra pit. They did not disappoint, in fact they did the exact opposite and more! All the performances were exceptional. The leads Matt Dowling and Nicky Pummeroy both handled their characters with apparent ease. Dowling mastered Higgins’ wordy style of singing with great skill while Pummeroy as Eliza transitioned from the unpolished accent and manner to the posh and sophisticated one perfectly. One of the stand outs for me was the performance of Eliza’s admirer, Freddy Eynsford-Hill, by Robert Holian. His song ‘On the Street Where You Live’ showcased his incredible voice. Eliza’s father was a very humorous character and his story included the brilliant song ‘Get Me
to the Church on Time’ which was performed skilfully by Dale Janke and cohorts. All ensemble parts and the remaining lead roles were played to perfection by the entire cast. I particularly loved the group choreography in the street and in the ballroom which was entertaining without going on too long. All members of the orchestra performed beautifully providing a great musical canvas for the actors to work with. It was great to see such a large orchestra for a local production. It was clear that many, many hours of hard work had been dedicated to My Fair Lady and all involved were well deserving of the huge round of applause I am sure they received each night. I only attended one performance of this show and unfortunately all subsequent performances were sold out. I won’t be making the same mistake in future. I might just invest in tickets to the whole season of the next STAG production so I can be dazzled repeatedly! By Bella Shaw

COUNCIL WORKING TO IMPROVE SAFETY IN SCHOOL ZONES In an effort to improve safety for children and motorists around school crossings and school areas, Greater Shepparton City Council will be issuing infringement notices to anyone caught parking or unloading children in an unsafe or illegal manner. Council’s Manager Citizen Services Laurienne Winbanks said the change came about as a response to complaints from parents and residents about people parking illegally in school zones. “Previously our Parking Enforcement Officers would ask drivers to move on if they were seen to be acting in an illegal manner. However this has not diminished the number of complaints we receive about people doing the wrong thing,” Ms Winbanks said. “Photographs will be taken of any cars parked illegally and infringement notices will be issued in the post. “Enforcement Officers will attend schools on a rotational basis, and at schools which continue to generate complaints. “We hope this new measure will assist to change behaviours as ultimately our priority is to provide a safe environment for school children across the municipality. “We ask that parents dropping off their children in and around school zones adhere to signage and park in designated areas,” advised Ms Winbanks. Council has written to all school principals informing them of these enforcement changes and to seek their assistance to inform their school community.

‘DARBY’ TURNS 85 Long time Tatura resident Geoff ‘Darby’ Munro celebrated his 85th birthday with family and friends on Thursday 10th July. The celebration was held a couple of weeks before his actual birthday, to ensure that his grandchildren from Tasmania could attend. The guests assembled at the Tatura Hotel (the middle pub) to enjoy a meal and go over some of the many yarns about Geoff’s life. Granddaughters Heather and Rose Munro wrote a song about his 85 years, and the audience enjoyed it very much.

SEPTEMBER GARDEN PLAN Spring is finally here! I'm well and truly over the cold and looking forward to getting out and spending time in the garden again. Lots to do this month in getting the veggie patch up to scratch for spring/summer veggies and pruning shrubs around the garden. September could also be called FERTILIZER month because just about everything likes a feed at this time of year. Feed spring flowering plants as soon as they have finished blooming, and summer varieties as they begin their new growth. Azaleas can be fertilized again once they have finished flowering. Citrus will also appreciate a feed of complete citrus fertilizer and a light prune if needed. Your lawn will appreciate a fertilize too. A good product to use on lawns is Yates Lawn Master slow release. Which fertilizers are best to use? Well there is not one easy answer but Dynamic Lifter or Blood and Bone is great to use on general shrubs or trees. Uplift is a liquid organic food that boosts the soil activity as well as promoting healthy plant growth. Thrive soluble is best for fast growing veggies and flowers. Slow release fertilizers are good to use for pots. Rose and native fertilizers are specially formulated to provide the required nutrients. Indoor plants and ferns love liquid fertilizer such as Thrive or Aquasol. Once winter/spring flowering bulbs finish flowering they will also thrive better next season if you fertilize now. Gardenias will want a feed now as well, use a Azalea Gardenia fertilizer and water in well. This will help stop any yellowing of leaves. Sulphate of Potash is good to put around your roses to boost and improve flower quality and general
plant health. Using sulphate of potash is also great to sprinkle around your Crepe Myrtle trees. Again it boosts the flowering quality but also strengthens the plants overall health, giving the plant more resistance to powdery mildew disease. Prune summer flowering shrubs and trim back evergreen hedges. As camellias finish flowering cut back what's required to allow light to enter the bush. Plumbago's, Fuchsia, Oleander's, Abelia, Gardenias, Abutilons can also be pruned now and also give them a good feed. You can prune Hibiscus back by one third but wait until the last frosts are well over. Get on top and stay on top of your weeds. Spring is the time you will get the best results from using Zero/Roundup. Its most effective this month as weeds are growing rapidly. Glyphosate 360 is the active ingredient in Roundup. Zero, Home Garden 450, Broad Spectrum Herbicide, Gard & Grow are all varieties of weed killers, some more concentrated to help with some of the more woody weeds. Mulch Mulch Mulch - Summer will be on our door step before we know it. I can’t express how much Mulch can help save water and time in your garden throughout the summer months. Last thing on my mind

Our annual Coffee Morning is always looked forward to with pleasure and this year was no exception. Instead of a guest speaker or display, we decided to celebrate our three senior members who were all born in 1924! Guests enjoyed birthday cake, browsing the table of memorabilia and listening to a mini autobiography from each dear lady. Mary Smith has spent most of her life in the Tatura/Murchison area. A number of her children and grandchildren are still living in the region as well. Verna Williams grew up in Bordertown, SA and made us smile with her tales of going to school on the back of a pony. London born Joan Armitage joined the WAF during WW11 and at 17 years of age was working with barrage balloons during the blitz in London. She later trained as an aircraft mechanic taking apart aircraft after 60 hours flying and putting them back together again. Congratulations to President Merle who co-ordinated the day. It was a great success socially and financially. Special thanks to the members from a neighbouring branch who helped with the dishes and to Community House staff for their help in setting up.

CRIME PREVENTION With Glenn Gibson, Crime Prevention Officer On the evening of Wednesday 23 July, 2014, a successful Cool Heads program was hosted at Eastbank in Shepparton. An audience of 630 people from the Greater Shepparton and surrounding communities attended the program. Importantly the audience had significant numbers of young drivers from our local sporting clubs, including the Tatura FNC. The program included presentations from emergency services agencies and road trauma victims. This free community event had a single objective; to reduce the devastating impact road trauma has on our community. The program, with the communities ongoing support, has seen significant reductions in the road trauma involving our young people over the last five years. The delivery of this valuable road safety message was only made possible due to Greater Shepparton Council’s provision of the Eastbank complex. If the young driver in your life hasn’t attended a Cool Heads program, mark your diaries with the next program on the evening of November 19, 2014 at the GoTafe Auditorium.
Mobile phone and internet safety! Advances in technology occur quickly and often our young people adapt quicker than their parents. We cannot use this as an excuse not to protect our children. Our young people become exposed to danger and often grabble with the consequences alone, too embarrassed to reach out for help. You cannot shield your children from these forms of communication; but you can help them learn to protect themselves and ensure their use is appropriate. Tips for parents; • Stay involved with your child’s use of new technologies. Ask your child to show you how their phone or phone App works and what they are using it for. PERSIST. Insist on being friends on their social networking sites and encourage appropriate communication. •
Find Out how access to the internet and other services can be managed. Spend time understanding security settings. This
information is available on the carrier’s website. Security may not be the priority for a young person so you can provide help in this area. •
Help your child to understand that their phone is like a wallet and every text message, phone call or downloaded service costs money. Often the cost is hidden.

Remind your child that they shouldn’t let anyone borrow their phone or access their social network sites.
•
Talk to your child about their experiences with their mobile phone. Let them know it's okay to tell you if they come across something that worries them; you are on their side 100%.

Teach your child that there are ways they can deal with disturbing material – they should not respond if they receive something inappropriate and they should immediately end the communication if they feel uncomfortable or worried. Again become familiar with how to block people from your service or network.

TOOLAMBA PRIMARY SCHOOL This term we have welcomed the return of Jayne Sproule who has returned from Family Leave. Jayne is teaching Technology and Music. Recently we purchased a class set of ipads and Mrs Sproule is utilising these in her lessons. The Prep children are thoroughly engaged in using these and have been introduced to learning games in very popular websites such as Top Marks and Reading Eggs. Teachers enjoyed our Semester 2 Parent Teacher Interviews which received a very welcome positive response by all. The Learning Street accommodated a movie with Mrs Kennedy while waiting, and to entertain toddlers while their family could give 100 % to their interview. Thank you to all families for attending and valuing our Home/School Partnership. Early this term the students in Grade 4, 5 and 6 had the opportunity to take part in a workshop with local artist Kaye Poulton. The students enjoyed learning how to make houses, trees and farm animals using different coloured clay, to create a village scene. Preparations and practice are well underway for our major School Concert at Eastbank which will be held on Wednesday August 27. This year’s theme is ‘And The Award Goes To’. All children will experience the lime light of being on stage and each child will perform in three acts. It is wonderful to see all grades involved in singing and dancing. The students are all

It was wonderful for many teachers to come together and engage in this excellent program in teaching writing as well as having a whole school approach to this area of the curriculum. This program involves four very important characters; Vinnie Vocabulary, Penny Punctuation, Ollie Opener and Connie Connective. Our Parents and Friends Major Raffle was a
huge success raising $3000. Mr. Boyer needed no encouragement to order new hurdles and high jump equipment. Financial support was also given to The Big Write support material in purchasing a range of recommended texts to explicitly model different writing genres. Parents and Friends are now busy organising the Concert Raffle and the Father’s Day Stall. This group of people is truly doing an amazing job. Thank you Toolamba Parents and Friends!

TATURA HOSPITAL LADIES AUXILIARY Our Annual General Meeting held in St. Mary's Hall on July 24 was very well attended including ladies representing various organisations in Tatura. Lyn Patullock, President of the Advisory Committee, congratulated and thanked the Auxiliary members for their efforts over the past 12 months and declared that all current Office-Bearers be re-elected. Jayne French, Nurse Manager of the Hospital, reported that the past year had been a very busy one with many improvements made throughout the Hospital and Park Villa. Purchases made by our Auxiliary were, a Sunbeam Mixmaster, 17 litre Stainless Steel Stockpot, Hair Dryer, Wii Consul and Game, Oxygen Concentrator and a heavy duty Electrolux Vacuum Cleaner. Carmel Johnson from GV Health was Guest Speaker. After leaving school one of Carmel's
school friends became a nun and went to Vietnam to work in an orphanage. She encouraged Carmel to go to Vietnam during her holidays to help disadvantaged children. Carmel found that children in outlying areas were unable to go to school because there was no public transport. She and her ex-pals from school formed a foundation to raise funds to buy bicycles for these children. $69.00 buys a bicycle, helmet, pump and tool kit. Carmel still goes to Vietnam for a few weeks each year to volunteer at the orphanage. The competition of a crocheted rug was won by Pat Whyte. Afternoon tea was served with the assistance of ladies from the Catholic Women's League. The next Meetings of the Auxiliary will be held on August 28 and September 25 in Hodson House at 2 p.m. New members will be made very welcome.

Greater Shepparton City Council is currently trialling reduced fees for mature aged cats for a certain period of time to improve the adoption rates of mature aged cats. Manager of Citizen Services Laurienne Winbanks said “quite often the older, or in this instance mature aged cats are being overlooked for their younger counterparts. Council is currently trialling a reduced adoption fee of $100 for a mature aged cat.” “Mature aged cats have so much to offer families. Quite often senior cats are house trained and have also slowed down. Normally mature aged cats have been socialised and know what they like and what they want. So this makes it much easier for their new owners to work out what they need”. “Mature aged cats, while a little older, deep down are young at heart and just want to be loved and cared for. They have so much love to offer. So why not come down to the animal shelter or view our cats that are currently up for adoption or view our website,” said Ms Winbanks. Greater Shepparton City Council as part of the Best Start program has developed a mobile website for breastfeeding friendly locations within the municipality. Parents out and about can now find nearby breastfeeding friendly locations by simply going to www.breastfeedingmap.com.au and saving this website into their favourites for future use. The website allows parents to search for breastfeeding friendly locations by the GPS on their mobile device or by manually entering an address. Mayor Jenny Houlihan said, “It’s great to have a mobile website. It’s now more convenient for parents out and about who are trying to find a suitable breastfeeding friendly location.” “The website also provides parents with helpful tips and support services in the local area, while also providing more information at your fingertips,” said Cr Houlihan. Breastfeeding friendly locations are businesses or organisations which welcome breastfeeding mothers and follow criteria set by the Australian Breastfeeding Association. All breastfeeding friendly locations display a ‘Breastfeeding Welcome Here’ sticker. This initiative was funded under the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development’s Enhanced Best Start funding. In the past the Greater Shepparton Best Start Breastfeeding Workgroup has developed a printed map displaying these locations, the website allows for the information to be updated and changed as required. A small number of printed maps is still available at Greater Shepparton City Council offices.

THE ‘GRAND OLD LADY OF TATURA’ reminiscing again…
Hi there everyone, sorry I missed you in July, I must have been sleeping on the job. You will remember how I was feeling very humble when I learned so much about my close relative and neighbour, The Mechanics Institute. I thought with a name like Victory Hall, my towering façade and fresh, bright, coat of paint I was the most important building in town, but the more I heard about my close relative and neighbour the more I realized how much I had to live up to. Just listen while I tell you The Mechanics Institute was, from 1881, the hub of the social and cultural life of Tatura. It had several additions and improvements from 1881 to 1926 when Victory Hall opened. Most notable were: 1893 - The enlargement of the hall and addition of ticket boxes. 1903 – More hall extensions plus the addition of a Lodge Room and a Supper Room. Acetylene gas lighting installed. 1908 – Billiard Room added 1911 – Electricity installed. The Mechanics Institute housed the town’s lending library but was also used by many and varied clubs and organizations. These are some of the users of the facilities: Several Lodges including the Druids, the Rechabites, IOOF and ANA; Most of the local churches; the Dramatic Society, The Choral Society, The Brass Band, The Horticultural Society, The Agricultural Society, The Association of the Blind, The Traders Association, The Shire of Rodney, The Cinderella Club, The Gymnastics Club, The Cricket Club, The Football Club, The Bowling Club, The Plumpton Coursing Club, the high school, the hospital (Mooroopna), and the Returned Soldiers Association. The diverse events which took place within its walls included: Church Services, Lodge Meetings, Plays, Concerts, Recitals, Balls, Supper Dances, Displays, Competitions, Lectures, Bazaars, Cake Fairs, Exams, Films, Flower Shows, Cards, Billiards, Meetings and something called Barry Jagger’s Japanese Village. It was also used for elections, the
Magistrates Court and Win the War Rallies. The Progress Association was formed 100 years ago on June 8 1914 and met at the Mechanics Institute monthly. This association was involved in every aspect of town affairs and improvements. On November 25 1918 the Progress Association discussed erecting a suitable memorial to the memory of ‘our fallen soldiers’ and decided to call a public meeting to discuss this. On December 14, 1918 Armistice Celebrations were held in Tatura with splendid service rendered by the Brass Band and following this celebration, the public meeting was held on December 18, 1918 to discuss the proposed Memorial Hall. So in 4 weeks the idea of a suitable memorial had transformed into the proposed memorial hall. In March 1919 the President of the Progress Association, F. Williams, outlined a plan for remodelling the Mechanics Institute with a view to providing a suitable memorial to our fallen soldiers. The idea was that the main hall be extended and clubrooms be provided for Returned Soldiers, and Dr Park was prepared to sell the Mechanics Institute a strip of land at the back of the hall to facilitate this. Much discussion was held regarding the cost of the scheme, whether the Returned Soldiers Association would support this, whether the returned soldiers wanted clubrooms at the Mechanics Institute and indeed if the town was big enough to warrant building another hall. A committee was formed to manage the whole process of adopting a sceme which was acceptable to all interested parties. At this meeting it was also stated that an ANZAC Service would be held in Tatura on April 25, 1919 which was the first mention of ANZAC in regard to a memorial service. In June 1919 the committee of the Mechanics Institute voted to make all returned soldiers honorary members of the Mechanics Institute and pledged to give every assistance in bringing the scheme of a memorial hall to fruition. In August 1919 another public meeting was held to discuss the proposal to build a memorial hall. After this a Memorial Hall Committee was formed and several organizations including the Mechanics Institute and the Progress Association had representatives. Following this meeting, Dr Park withdrew his offer to sell his land to the Mechanics Institute. In September 1922 the Mechanics institute hosted a concert in aid of the Victory Hall.
This is the first mention of the name. In August 1923 the Mechanics Institute Committee voted to rebate 331/3% of all charges for functions held in aid of the Victory Hall and the supper room was granted free of charge for all Victory Hall Committee meetings. In September 1924 a meeting was held between the Mechanics Institute Committee and the Victory Hall Committee where they elected to amalgamate the committees under the auspices of the community Trust which owned the Mechanics Institute. In November new trustees were appointed and in December 1924 the first meeting where all business and finances were amalgamated was held. In January 1925 the committee was empowered to borrow up to 2500 pounds for the erection of Victory Hall. In February 1925 a special meeting was convened to approve plans and in March 1925 the Premier of Victoria was approached for a building grant. This grant was finally received in September and was for 50 pounds. In March 1925 the tender, to build the new hall, by C Willoughby for 3560 pounds was accepted and in April a leaflet drop fund raising campaign was held which raised 69 pounds. In June 1925 the plans revealed that the right of way between the Mechanics Institute and the Victory Hall would be 18ft 6ins, a foundation stone was decided upon and General Sir John Monash was invited to lay the stone. Presumably he was invited because of his role in the war. He was unable to attend so an invitation was then sent to Senator Elliott who accepted. The foundation stone was laid on October 14 1925 and the official party was entertained to lunch at the Criterion Hotel, now the Tatura Hotel, by the Shire President Cr. R. Pogue. Later the Victory Hall Ladies Committee provided afternoon tea. Shortly after this event the decision was made to invite Lord Stonehaven, the Governor General, to officially open the Victory Hall when it was completed. The opening date was set for March 9th 1926. On this day flags and lights decorated the hall, local businesses closed at 4pm, a gala concert was organized for the night and a theatre box was specially erected in the hall for Lord Stonehaven to sit in to watch the concert. A gold key to the hall was presented to Lord Stonehaven. The concert made a profit of 55 pounds 12s 3d. The total cost of the Victory Hall was 5283 pounds which included the original tender plus toilets (an added extra), electric light and various other inclusions such as tables and chairs. PETER’S PONDERINGS There seems to be an ever increasing amount of bad news reported over the various news services and from around the world, with people doing terrible things. Where does all this come from? What has caused people to be like this? Can things be turned around? Maybe world issues are too big to ponder in this way and in this space, but bad things happen in the local community too, in households and even in myself. Things can be looking good and then it may seem that something just blows up, flies out of control and we can ask ourselves, “Where did that come from?” Of course there can be many answers to a question like that but often I think we can be rushing along in our own way without taking care of the little but very important details of life. The singing group Casting Crowns, whom I have quoted from before, nailed it for me in their song ‘Slow Fade’ which includes these lyrics: The journey from your mind to your hands Is shorter than you're thinking Be careful if you think you stand You just might be sinking It's a slow fade when you give yourself away It's a slow fade when black and white have turned to grey Thoughts invade, choices are made, a price will be paid When you give yourself away People never crumble in a day Daddies never crumble in a day Families never crumble in a day Let’s be people that don’t fade away. CATHOLIC WOMEN’S LEAGUE The August meeting of the League was attended by 14 members. Two delegates attended a most informative General Conference at Warragul on August 27/28. As the financial year of the League ends shortly funds were distributed to local and international charities to help with the continuation of their work in helping the poor and needy. ALL SAINTS TATURA NEWS As a newcomer in the area it’s exciting to see the landscape change as the year has gone by. The days are getting longer again, cold frosty mornings give way to beautiful sunny days, the lambs are appearing in the paddocks and the first blossoms are opening. It’s even more exciting though to see the developing in relationships that can occur in only six months. Our thanks to those who’ve helped Andy and me begin to settle into Tatura so well. Things at All Saints are really starting to speed up again as people return from winter holidays. Here’s a few things that we’d love you to join us for… Regular events… ‘mainly music’ – Every Wednesday of term time 10am-12. A time of music, singing, play and food for pre-schoolers and parents / grand-parents / caregivers. $3 a session or get a 10 session card for $20. Sunday service - 9am. Anyone is welcome to come and join us. Ladies Guild – meets 2nd Friday at 1:30pm for communion and then 2pm for a meeting. Special events… Thursday September 4 , Fabulous Flowers and Fine Food a floral fundraiser and fine luncheon. Tickets are limited, $25 and must be booked by August 28. SACRED HEART PRIMARY SCHOOL Sacred Heart celebrates official opening of new Senior Learning Centre. On Friday August 1 2014, members of Sacred Heart’s school and parish community joined dignitaries from the Sandhurst Catholic Education Office, Architect Peter Byrne, Fr Joe Taylor and parish priest Fr Michael Morley, for the official opening and Blessing Ceremony for the new Senior Learning Centre. Principal, Trish Miller said that plans for this wonderful new building began in March 2013 with Sacred Heart staff identifying what its Educational Philosophy was and ascertaining
what type of environment was needed to optimise learning for children. “Sacred Heart firmly believes that students learn in different ways. Inside the new building you’ll find large and small spaces, little nooks and group meeting spaces, an internal and external amphitheatre and an outdoor deck all optimised to enhance the learning experience for students,” Principal Miller said. Architect, Peter Byrne, did an outstanding job of incorporating all aspects of this Learning and Teaching philosophy and other aspects

Principal Trish Miller said that the dynamic design creatively incorporates all aspects of Sacred Heart’s beliefs as a community about Learning and Teaching. There are many people who helped in the development and building of this new Learning Centre. Diverse Builders must be commended for their outstanding tradesmanship and amazing co-ordination of this building. The work of all men on site was second-to-none and Sacred Heart thanks them for their professionalism. A huge thank you to Father Joe Taylor and Father Michael Morley for leading everyone through a beautiful Opening Ceremony on Friday, which was very special. Thanks must also go to the staff at the Sandhurst Catholic Office for assisting Sacred Heart as they explored views on learning and teaching and moved from financing and planning, to building this fantastic facility. Finally, thank you to the Sacred Heart community. To Fr. Michael and the School Board who backed the idea to build wholeheartedly. To the staff who very professionally worked through the challenges of the building process, to the Year 5/6 Unit both staff and students, for managing so well in your temporary accommodation and to the students who have been so enthusiastic in their transition into the new learning space. This is truly a beautiful building that has the potential to have a significantly positive influence on the learning for all who spend time in it.

Early in Tim’s career he was Chef de Partie at Glen Eagles Hotel in Scotland where he developed his love for both food and golf. In 1997 Tim moved to Australia and became Executive Sous Chef at Hotel Sofitel in Melbourne. In 1999 Tim was appointed Executive Head Chef at Rockman’s Regency Hotel in Melbourne. In 2002 Tim was awarded Chef of the year by the Australian Culinary Federation and in 2004 Tim was a member of the Australian Culinary Olympic Team which travelled to Germany to compete. Recently Tim has been Head Chef of Oscar W’s in Echuca and Ceres in Echuca.
