FEBRUARY NH SALE PREVIEW 321 lots have been catalogued for the 2020 renewal of the Tattersalls Ireland February National Hunt Sale, which takes place on Tuesday, January 28th at 10am.

Last year's edition produced the best turnover on record for the one-day sale, backed up by highly satisfying returns in a median that matched 2018's figure of €7,500, and an increased average of €11,516.

This year’s sale once again features a number of eye-catching pedigrees, including a halfbrother to Battleoverdoyen, (Lot 44), a son of Mount Nelson that has been consigned by

Caroline J. Berry, with a timely form boost last month. Gordon Elliott’s charge won his second Grade 1 contest with an all-the-way success in the Neville Hotels Novices’ Chase at Leopardstown over Christmas, ensuring that he has now won seven of his eight races to date.

There are also half brothers of Amore Alato and Solomon Grey (Lot 259), Space Cadet and Gallant John Joe (Lot 268), The Dutchman, Katie Too and The Pirates Queen (Lot 266), Mister Hotelier (Lot 27), and Angels Breath (pictured left) (Lot 206) among the catalogue.

With nine-time Grade 1 winner Cue Card and Grade 1 Neptune Investment Management Novices' Hurdle winner Willoughby Court previous graduates of the sale, this year’s sale also includes, Lot 34, a yearling out of the four-time winner Argento Luna, whilst there is a Walk In The Park yearling (Lot 111) out of Fleur D’Ainay, a Grade 1 winner in France that has been consigned by Railstown Stud.

Thistletown Stud are consigning Lot 130, the only son of Network in Ireland. He is out of five times winning mare Holly Girl.

Last year’s sale was topped by the Willie Mullins-trained Pakora who was bought by Peter and Ross Doyle Bloodstock for €80,000, and the mares section once again features some well-related sorts, particularly Isabellas Girl (Lot 320), who is a half-sister to multiple Grade 1 winner Faugheen and Elle Lou (Lot 315) a half-sister to fellow Grade 1 winner Apache Stronghold.

Leading owner Barry Connell has also consigned Champayne Lady, (Lot 317) a Robin Des Champs mare that finished third in the Grade 2 Dawn Run Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle a the 2018 Cheltenham Festival. Click to view catalogue...

February National Hunt Sale ''It's a very lucky sale for us - we purchased a Fame And Glory colt at the 2017 February NH Sale for €15,000 and returned to the Derby Sale and got €72,000. It was a brilliant result. I'll certainly be on the lookout again at this year's sale, said Matt O'Connor, Bloodstock Agent.

May Store Sale Interview: Lucy Wadham Hailing from London but now training on the edge of the Newmarket Heath, Lucy Wadham may have some very notable flat winners to her name, however she has also carved out a notable reputation with her horses over obstacles, ensuring she is one of Britain’s leading dual-purpose operators, with the Irish Champion Four-Year-Old Hurdle, the Imperial Cup and the Warfield Hurdle among the big prizes over jumps to feature on her roll of honour.

Tattersalls Ireland May Store Sale was a new addition to the sales calendar in 2018, and last year’s second edition saw Wadham joining a large contingent of British buyers to cross the Irish Sea for the sale.

"Harry Fowler mentioned to me that some good horses had come out of the first May Store Sale, and there was good value to be had at it,” notes Wadham.

Assisted by her daughter Mimi Wadham and Violet Hesketh (WH Bloodstock), Wadham ended up returning home with four horses, and she was very impressed by the sale. “We came over expecting to buy two horses, but we ended up leaving with four because we felt that there was such good value to be had. Some of the individuals were very nice."

Wadham bought one of the highest-priced horses at the sale, a Fame and Glory filly (Lot 99), for €45,000.

"The Fame and Glory filly is a very nice filly. She is cantering, and I'm hoping that she will run this season. She is showing a bit, and I am really pleased with her."

The Woodfield Farm Stud-consigned Curtain Time gelding (Lot 94) was another to catch Wadham’s eye, as she went to €20,000 to secure him and is very happy with how he has progressed since. "He comes from a very good family. He is a big strong horse that is cantering at the moment and he will be racing next season."

Her final purchase, a Trans Island gelding that she purchased for €26,000, met the criteria that she approaches each sale with and is a strong believer in the conformation of a horse, something that will be high on her list ahead of the 2020 edition.

"Depending on how much money that we have to spend, we would be looking at conformation first.

“In a filly, we would be looking at the pedigree as well on the whole, but I think that conformation comes first."

“I really enjoy going to Tattersalls and look forward to returning."

Relaunch of August NH Sale Tattersalls Ireland have relaunched its established August National Hunt Sale. As part of the new format, a one day of SELECT stores will open the August National Hunt Sale followed by two non-select days.

DERBY SALE INTERVIEW: JOHNNY COLLINS, BROWN ISLAND STABLES Owned by Carrigtwohill native Johnny Collins (pictured with Michael Browne left) Brown Island Stables are one of the key consignors at the National Hunt store sales at Tattersalls Ireland.

Initially, Collins started off selling flat breeze-up horses, however he always had a strong connection to the National Hunt sector of the industry and so evolved the idea of buying and selling store horses.

The Cork-based consignor began his journey with Tattersalls Ireland as a National Hunt consignor back in 2012, when offering his first store horse at the Derby Sale.

National Hunt was always my first passion, I used to ride as an amateur in point-to-points in my younger years, so the buying and selling of store horses seemed like an obvious route to go down,” explains Collins.

Since the time Collins first stepped foot in the sales ring at Tattersalls Ireland, Brown Island stables have enjoyed an increase in the number of lots that they have offered at the sales each year. “I started off selling one horse at the Derby Sale back in 2012, and last year I was lucky enough to be able to offer a total of ten horses.

“Success at the sales has been key to the growth of my business and I have also found that it works hand in hand with prepping the flat breeze-up horses, therefore, it has allowed me to grow both operations successfully."

That decision to operate in both markets over eight years ago paid off, as the years since then he has been quite successful inside the sales ring, with one of his career highlights coming courtesy of the French-bred Gemini Cricket, whom he sold for €200,000 at the Derby Sale.

“It was fantastic to get such a great result with him, I was over the moon. He had quite a nice pedigree, but he also had the physical conformation to back it up, which is very important. He got a good update on his page before coming to the sale so that helped. He had the whole package.”

That is just one of the many successes he has enjoyed in the Fairyhouse sales ring, following on from the Grade 1 Cheltenham Champion Bumper winner Relegate, who was sold at the 2016 edition of the Derby Sale, whilst two-time graded winner Bel Ami De Sivola was sold for €105,000 at the 2014 renewal of the Derby Sale.

Collins is already looking forward to the 2020 sales, and with 30 store horses to prepare for the sales season ahead, he will now begin to decide what sale to aim his draft at.

“I would try and keep in mind the sales and be thinking about where they are suitable for. I like to have a plan mapped out for each horse, but at the same time, you can have nothing set in stone because as they grow, they can change and lots of variables can happen.

"In particular for the Derby sale I would aim to have an athletic good moving horse, as down through the years it’s been an elite sale, and when you go there your horses need to fit in."

“Tattersalls Ireland provides a wide range of buyers at the sale which means there is nearly always a customer for every horse that you have, that’s a major advantage going to the sale. The horses make good prices and they provide the buyers, so if you have good quality stock, then the combination of both makes it a great place for success.” Click here to nominate...

PURCHASER INTERVIEW: ROSS DOYLE Tattersalls Ireland Derby Sale has been a very successful shopping ground for Bloodstock Agent Ross Doyle.

Whilst he may be best known as the purchaser of numerous Group 1 winners on the flat, Alisier D’Irlande, The Paparazzi Kid, Robin Des Forest and Lambro are just a handful of the subsequent black type winners over obstacles that he has sourced from Ireland’s leading store sale. Undoubtedly, it is Lostintranslation (pictured bottom left) though, that is chief among them.

Now a dual Grade 1 winner, the son of Flemensfirth was an inexpensive purchase in the context of what he has since achieved, with the Wicklow-based Doyle securing him for €38,000 from Jean O’Brien’s Derrygrath Stud at the 2015 renewal of the Derby Sale.

"Lostintranslation was quite a raw looking horse, but he was nice and big. He was athletic, a good mover, with an honest looking head on him and he was correct in every way,” says Doyle when describing what attracted him to this season’s Grade 1 Betfair Chase winner.

“He was a real old fashioned type, we just loved the way he moved and the attitude he had. He looked as tough as nails and was coming from a good home in Derrygrath Stud.

"The quality of horses in Tattersalls is fantastic. What the breeders, vendors and Tattersalls put together is just the cream of the crop from the top Irish national hunt-bred horses. They are some of the best stores in Europe."

Having already formed a profitable alliance with the late William Codd when his €52,000 Derby Sale purchase, Alisier D’Irlande, sold for £300,000 at Cheltenham after Codd had sent him out to win a four-year-old maiden at Templemore, Lostintranslation was also sent to Codd’s yard in Mayglass, Co. Wexford for a pointing campaign that saw him finish fourth at Tattersalls Farm.

"I was introduced to an English client, Paul Taylor and Richard O'Dwyer, through Jim Boyle, who own Lostintranslation. One day, they just said to me that they would like to send a horse to Colin Tizzard and if I saw anything to give them a shout. After he finished fourth in a point-to-point, I rang them up and said this is a horse that Willie recommends. We don't know how good he is, but he jumps and he gallops, and he will give you plenty of fun. The lads bought him, and the rest is history!"

From there, a very strong association with Colin and Joe Tizzard has formed, which has seen Doyle source a number of the most exciting horses currently residing in their Dorset yard. Among them are the 2017 Derby Sale graduate Fiddlerontheroof, who became the latest Grade 1 winner that Doyle has sourced with his emphatic six-length victory in the Tolworth Hurdle at Sandown earlier this month, whilst The Big Breakaway is one of the leading British hopes for the Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, having won the first three races of his career.

As the deadline for nominations to this year’s Derby Sale looms, Doyle is already looking to further build his relationship with the Tizzard’s at the sale when they return to the Tattersalls Ireland sales complex in June.

“We bought nine last June at the Derby Sale and it is a sale that we love coming to.

The quality of horses in Tattersalls Ireland is fantastic. What the breeders, vendors, and Tattersalls put together is just the cream of the crop from the top Irish national huntbred horses. They are some of the best stores in Europe."

Behind The Scenes with Margaret O'Neill, Tattersalls Ireland Name: Margaret O’Neill Position in Company: Bloodstock Manager How many years spent with the Company: 25 Years What do you most enjoy about your role: I speak with a lot of clients during the day and I enjoy dealing with them on a one to one basis on sale days. Over the years I have met some remarkable people within the business. We have tight deadlines to produce catalogues for every sale and I take great pride in meeting these deadlines which is never easy! Over the years we have had students in during the summer months for work experience and it gives me enormous pleasure in watching them improve and progress within the industry.

What is the biggest change you have seen in the industry since joining: The most significant change within the business would have to be our online entry system, and since its inception our clients are very aware of the benefits and it has never been easier now to enter into our sales.

What has been your most unforgettable moment with the company: I have had a lot of memorable moments within the Company, but I have to say my most unforgettable moment is unfortunately a sad one when I heard of George Mernagh’s death. I had visited George in hospital the day before and had never expected him to be gone the next day. It was a very sad time within the company, and he will never be forgotten.

What is the funniest thing you have seen happen: Most of the funniest things I have witnessed in my time (and there have been quite a few) would refuse ink!!!! and could not be repeated in this edition.

Who is your role model: Princess Diana, for her empathy, and also how she brought up both her sons.

How do you spend your downtime: I love travelling, fashion, walking, and of course watching racing.

SEPTEMBER YEARLING SALE

WHAT'S NEW TO REPORT UPGRADE TO CONSERVATORY & BAR

Work has commenced on replacing the existing conservatory to the mainhouse. As part of the work the existing bar will be modified together with new flooring, lighting and furniture. The work commenced in December 2019 and will be completed in April 2020. We apologise for the inconvenience due to the closure of the Dining Room and the Dawn Run bar in the main house. We look forward to welcoming you to our upgraded facilities during our May Store Sale.
