“WE ARE LOOKING FOR QUALITY AND WE ARE STARTING HERE AT FAIRYHOUSE”
EDGAR BYRNE, BLOODSTOCK AGENT
The September Yearling Sale has made giant strides in recent years. The quality of yearling catalogued is improving rapidly year on year, and it gives me great satisfaction that vendors are now specifically targeting the September Yearling Sale months in advance of the sale. A higher quality catalogue will naturally lead to a higher calibre of graduate, and that is reflected on the racecourse with Group 2 Gimcrack Stakes winner Cool Hoof Luke emerging from his juvenile season with Group 1 credentials in 2025.
The September Yearling Sale produced 167 two-year-old track successes in 2024, once again, making it a leading source of two-year-old winners. Our graduates succeeded at stakes level in Ireland, and the UK, while producing
five individual listed winners in Italy. Our purchasers now recognise that the sale is offering a higher calibre of yearling, and that is reflected in the 2024 sale results with nine lots being purchased for €100,000 or more. Over 250 individual buyers from over 10 countries were on the final purchaser list last year, illustrating the global appeal of our September Yearling Sale. Flat racing’s leading owners, trainers and agents recognise that consignors are sending yearlings with stronger pedigrees to the September Yearling Sale, and consignors are being rewarded with turnover exceeding €12 million for each of the last four years.
The sale attracted huge footfall from the UK in 2024, with spend making up over 35% of the total turnover from the sale. The success of our
graduates across various European racing jurisdictions is mirrored with the heightened demand from across Europe.
We are hugely appreciative of the continued support from Irish Thoroughbred Marketing, who help to grow the appeal of the September Yearling Sale. Flat racing has become a sport with a true international flavour, and it is important that both current and prospective clients are aware of the success and opportunity afforded by the September Yearling Sale. The incentives put in place by Irish Thoroughbred Marketing help to build the appeal, both domestically and internationally.
