The paroquial center is part of a complex that, together with the church of Marco de Canaveses, forms an urban square set on a podium above the town. The two-story building houses classrooms, a game room and lounge, an auditorium, and other community spaces. The priest’s house forms a small volume facing a garden. The gentle curve at the far end of the building continues the form of nearby structures and serves to enclose the square blocking it from the busy road below. The materials are concrete, stucco, a granite base, and granite paving for the square and balconies. Interior finishes include wood floors, tile, marble and wood wainscots.

This two-story building in exposed white concrete with a granite base is located next to the historic district of Viana de Castelo, along with two other structures designed by Porto architects Tavora and Souto de Moura. The buildings face the river and a create a focal point at this previosly ignored site by the water. The library’s first floor, an L-shaped volume housing stacks and staff offices, faces the garden. The main reading room is raised on pilotis above a central court to allow views through the building to the river at ground level. Long horizontal windows in the reading room provide spectacular views out to the river and to the enclosed court below. Three large skylights bring diffused natural light into the reading spaces. The building features custom-designed windows and doors and locally crafted wood furniture: tables, chairs, bookshelves, book carts, and all hardware and fixtures.

The project for the Art Center College of Design was a collaboration with Frank Gehry’s office on the design of an addition to the school, a building by Craig Ellwood. Gehry worked on the library below the main building, while Siza’s design stretched along the full length of the site and housed classrooms, lecture halls, studios, offices, an auditorium, and a cafe, divided into separate volumes. The new buildings were oriented around a central court and a raised public terrace, concealing the garage, allowed for the creation of a focal point in back of the site: an open green space facing the hills of Pasadena. The irregular curving forms of the new complex appear to mimic the topography, creating niches between the building walls for outdoor meetings and activities.

RECONSTRUCTION OF CHIADO DISTRICT, LISBON

The Chiado zone occupies a position of transition between the Pombaline downtown area and the Bairro Alto hill and constitutes the most important civic and commercial space in the Old City of Lisbon. Seventeen buildings situated in Chiado were totally or partially destroyed by the fire in August 1988. The strategy is not to consider the Reconstruction of Chiado in isolation, but to contribute to the revitalization of the urban downtown area. New pedestrian walkways, ramps, stairs, and patios are created to make interconnections between the previously separate zones. The project takes into account the framework of the historical and monumental area, respecting the pre-existing structure and maintaining the frontages. Started in 1988 and still not finished, the Chiado project includes a new underground station, landscaping of the Largo de Chiado and interior patios, the renovation and reuse of the Grandes Armazens hotel and commercial center, the Grandella store, and several residential structures such as the Leonel and Chaves. All window and door details, ironwork, and built-in furniture is specially designed in the office and custom built by local craftsmen.

This apartment building is the last piece to be completed in the long reconstruction of the Chiado district in Lisbon, where many buildings were destroyed by fire in 1987. The first six floors of the Leonel house luxury apartments, with ground-floor shops opening to historic Rua do Carmo.

The back of the building, with its lower floors underground, faces ruins of the Convento do Carmo. The building becomes a key element, linking for the first time two parts of Chiado at different elevations. A series of ramps and a glass elevator behind the Leonel allow access to the top stories, then over the roof terrace and on to a bridge adjoining Eiffel’s elevator on Rua do Carmo. The front facade of the Leonel building was rebuilt according to the Pombaline style of Chiado, with double wood-framed windows alternating with balcony doors, following the rhythm of other facades nearby. Inside the apartments feature wood floors with radiant heating (marble floors in the kitchens and bathrooms), stucco, painted wood wainscot, large sliding glass doors separating the main living spaces, custom-made furniture and fixtures.

Role: Senior project manager and architect Phase: Conceptual and schematic design Freelance work - upper penthouse solution by B&E With Baumschlager and Eberle Gmbh F i r s t - p r i z e c o m p e t i t i o n w i n n e r In Construction The residential tower is a focal point for the Palaiskwartier complex and the adjacent areas of Hertogenbosch. The tower has a strong orthogonal form, unlike the more complex shapes of the Armada houses, which makes it a symbolic anchor and a culmination of the series of buildings along the edge of the pond.

While its simple, classical profile makes a subtle reference to the historic buildings in the center of Hertogenbosch and the more sober forms in the Palaiskwartier outer core, the treatment of its modern patterned-glass facade is in harmony with the lighter and more playful character of the inner core. The tower is placed strategically to take advantage of maximum sunlight from the south, and to minimize the negative effects of shadow and wind in direct proximity of the building. It is pushed to the outermost northern edge of the site, allowing the possibility to create an open courtyard between the tower and the independent volume of the restaurant at the southern edge. It makes a direct relationship to the water by its extension into the pond, with the placement of a large low-lying terrace in front of the building and restaurant. A series of public spaces near the tower create additional gathering spaces near the water for Palaiskwartier and the town. The building contains 59 apartments organized around a central service core, on 20 floors. The materials provide a sense of luxury and comfort: stone in the public spaces of the foyer and stair core and in the wet spaces in the apartments, and wood finishing in the bedrooms and living rooms. Service areas are organized adjacent to the stair core, while living and dining rooms next to the double skin facade provide access to balconies, which may be either partially or fully enclosed by sliding screens. These balconies create a facade which is always changing according to the needs of the user and the movement of the sun and wind. At night the tower glows like a lantern, creating a series of moving reflections in the water below.

Phase: Conceptual and schematic design With Baumschlager and Eberle Gmbh

The project for Tverskaya Plaza, adjacent to the Belorussky train station in the heart of Moscow, utilizes the space above and immediately adjacent to the railways to create a series of “mega-structures” containing office and commercial space, hotels, parking, and public plazas and gardens. The project works by creating higher density in this relatively underdeveloped neighborhood next to Tverskaya street and at the edge of the “third” ring of Moscow’s historic core. The open area between the historic Belorussky station building, with its large market, and the new Tverskaya Plaza megalith serves as a pedestrian connection to the new commercial and public indoor and outdoor spaces. Office towers rise out of the megalith and provide commanding views of Moscow’s center, while the hotel is situated adjacent to the station. This project was designed as one of a series of such megastructures, one for each of Moscow’s nine train stations.

B Освоение пешеходных дорожек В связи с выполнением своей основной функции в качестве транспортного узла главное освоение проекта осуществляется через площадь перед железнодорожным вокзалом. Для того чтобы после реализации второй фазы строительства на некоторое время сохранить подходные пути, предусмотрена разработка других площадей вдоль подъездных путей к гаражам. Железнодорожный вокзал для поездов дальнего следования и областного сообщения Старое здание железнодорожного вокзала опять должно выполнять свою первоначальную задачу. Освоение перронов для поездов областного сообщения предусмотрено посредством переходов железнодорожного вокзала, подъемные и спускные лестницы ведут от перронов, на которые пребывают поезда дальнего следования, в находящиеся над ними здания. Автобусный терминал Все автобусные станции, которые сегодня рассеяны по всей площади перед железнодорожным вокзалом, должны быть объединены в центральном автобусном терминале. Новая остановка была сознательно перенесена на границы пешеходной зоны по середине между обеими станциями метро с целью оптимального сокращения обходных путей и минимизации возможных конфликтных ситуаций с моторизированным индивидуальным транспортом. Внешний ряд автобусного терминала предусмотрен для автобусов недлительного пребывания на железнодорожном вокзале. Несколько удаленный задний ряд рассчитан на автобусные маршруты, начало маршрута или конечная остановка которых находятся в этом пункте.

Fußgängererschließung Bedingt durch seine zentrale Funktion als Verkehrsknotenpunkt erfolgt die Haupterschließung des Projektes über den Bahnhofsvorplatz. Um die Zugangswege auch nach Realisierung der zweiten Bauphase kurz halten zu können, sind weitere Erschließungen entlang der Garagenzufahrten vorgesehen.

Fern- und Regionalbahnhof Das alte Bahnhofsgebäude soll seine ursprüngliche Funktion wieder zurückerhalten. Die Erschließung der Regionalbahnsteige ist über eine Bahnhofsüberführung vorgesehen, Auf- und Abgänge führen von den Fernverkehrsbahnsteigen in die darüber befindliche Bebauung.

Busterminal Sämtliche der heute quer über den Bahnhofsvorplatz verstreut liegende Busstationen sollen in einem zentralen Busterminal zusammengefasst werden.

Die neue Haltestelle wurde dabei bewusst an den Rand der Fußgeherzone sowie mittig zwischen die beiden U-Bahnstationen gelegt, um die Umsteigewege so kurz wie möglich zu halten und Konfliktpunkte mit dem motorisierten Individualverkehr zu minimieren.

Die äußere Spur des Busterminals ist für Busse ohne längeren Aufenthalt am Bahnhof vorgesehen. Eine etwas verschwenkte hintere Spur soll jenen Linien vorbehalten sein, die an dieser Haltestelle ihren Anfangs- bzw. Endpunkt haben werden.

B Особый стиль большого города Структура внешнего пространства охватывает свободное пространство с различными характеристиками: урбанистические площади (большая и маленькая городская площадь, ряд ж/д вокзала) на уровне E 0, ранее отличающиеся особым ландшафтом дворики на уровне E 2 (зона отдыха и зона для занятий спортом), а также парковый ландшафт для застройки к северу от ж/д вокзала. Ряды лесопосадок из дуба особой породы (Quercus robur "Fastigiata"), серебряного клена (Acer saccharinum), красного дуба (Quercus rubra) и платана (Platanus x acerifolia) определяют структуру ландшафта, которая придает проекту «зеленые оттенки».

Die Außenraumgestaltung umfasst Freiräume unterschiedlicher Charakteristik: urbane Plätze (großer und kleiner Stadtplatz, Bahnhofszeile) auf Ebene E 0, eher landschaftlich geprägte Höfe auf Ebene E 2 (PlatzErholung und Platz-Sport), sowie eine Parklandschaft für die Bebauung nördlich des Bahnhofs.

Gehölzreihen aus Säuleneichen (Quercus robur "Fastigiata"), Silberahornen (Acer saccharinum), Roteichen (Quercus rubra) und Platanen (Platanus x acerifolia) definieren das Landschaftsgerüst, das dem Projekt ein grünes Rückgrat verleiht.

C Железнодорожный вокзал спроектирован с конструкцией плит по всей высоте этажей. Выбрана модульная сетка колонн 16,4 x 16,4 м, которая отвечает требованиям по выполнению надстроек и требованиям ж/д вокзала. В качестве платформы ж/д вокзала будет сооружено плоское перекрытие над рельсовыми путями и перронами, которое вместе со стенными шайбами по всей высоте этажей и расположенным над ними перекрытием образовывает несущий каркас. С целью повышения пригодности к использованию перекрытия предварительно натягиваются без соединений. Потом они забетонируются в бетон местного производства во время работы на строительных лесах. Стены для размежевания нагрузки разделяются на участки для того, чтобы сделать отверстия для дальнейшей подготовки и прокладки трубопроводов для снабжения и устранения отходов. Верхнее перекрытие имеет похожую конструкцию.

Опоры около перронов благодаря принятию соответствующих мер будут защищены от сошедших с рельсов транспортных средств, а также будут укреплены в связи с действием горизонтальных нагрузок.

Der Bahnhof wird mit einer geschosshohen Platten-Konstruktion überdacht. Es wird ein Säulenraster von 16,4 x 16,4 m gewählt, der Sowohl den Anforderungen der Überbauung als auch des Bahnhofes entspricht.

Als Bahnhofsplatte über den Gleisen und Bahnsteigen wird eine Flachdecke errichtet, die gemeinsam mit geschosshohen Wandscheiben und der darüber liegenden Decke das Traggerüst bildet. Die Decken werden zur Erhöhung der Gebrauchstauglichkeit verbundlos vorgespannt. Sie werden auf Rüstung in Ortbeton betoniert. Die aussteifenden Wände werden in den Feldern unterbrochen, um Öffnungen für die Erschließung und Verund Entsorgungsleitungen zu schaffen. Die obere Decke wird gleichartig konstruiert.

Die Stützen neben den Bahnsteigen werden durch entsprechende Maßnahmen gegen entgleiste Fahrzeuge geschützt und für Horizontallasten verstärkt ausgebildet. +41,40
