TIPS

• Carry a coin purse at all times and make sure you have a variety of coins in your possession, as some parking machines do not take cards and many do not give change. • It is also handy to always have £1 coins for supermarket shopping carts (known as trolleys). • You may sometimes pay for parking with apps such as Ringo (instructions can be found on the parking meters) or in advance through websites such as www.justpark.com

LONDON CONGESTION CHARGE

This scheme requires drivers to pay a fee per day when driving in Central London during certain hours. More information may be found at: www.tfl.gov.uk/roadusers/congestioncharging

More information about driving in the UK and how to apply for a UK Driver’s License will be given at the following PIRC seminars in the fall: “Survive & Thrive” and “Driving in the UK.”

RAIL

Train services into London and throughout the UK are convenient from the towns close to TASIS. Your local train station can provide you with a timetable and the most up-to-date information, or you can find information online or via the National Rail app. Train schedules can change throughout the year, and rail maintenance is often conducted, so it is best to double-check the website or app before your trip.

General Information

• A single is a one-way ticket. • A return is a round-trip ticket. • A return to “London Terminals” rather than London Waterloo includes free train (not tube) transfer to Charing Cross (for

Trafalgar Square, Buckingham Palace) or London Bridge (for

Borough Market, Tower Bridge). • A return with travel card gives you a round-trip ticket to

London/Waterloo and unlimited travel on most of London’s buses, underground trains, and Docklands Light Rail (depending on the zones purchased). Purchase it at train stations any time or after 9 am for “off-peak” (and therefore cheaper) prices. • There are no express trains on Sundays. • Enquire about Group Save discounts on qualifying train journeys when three or more people travel together during off-peak times (for savings of ⅓ off).

Railcards

These cards must be purchased annually from a train station or online, but offer significant savings for regular travel. Information can be found at station ticket offices and online: www.railcard.co.uk

Commuter Train Passes

Weekly, monthly, or annual passes are available and will save you money if you are making the same journey three or more times in a week. www.nationalrail.co.uk/times_fares/ticket_types/season_tickets.aspx www.commuterclub.co.uk/nationalrail

LONDON UNDERGROUND (TUBE) AND BUSES

• No cash is accepted on buses. You must use an oyster card (see below), contactless debit card, or Apple pay for each bus journey. • You can purchase single tickets/travel cards for the underground, but it is more economical to use an oyster card (see below), contactless debit card, or Apple pay. • Children under 11 travel free.
