Project

Dr. Seuss Inspiration

Built in sunny Spring Valley, California, this kindergarten is a safe place for students to learn and grow in. It’s circular shape encourages movement, flow, and interest while keeping students within protective boundaries. Each classroom opens into an inner outdoor play area, melding both indoor and outdoor spaces into one teaching opportunity that is fun and inspiring for children.

Project Operation Underground Railroad (O.U.R.) executes sting operations to rescue children from human trafficking. After rescues, children stay at an aftercare center to learn and recover. This aftercare center is located in Bangladesh, where several O.U.R. sting operations have taken place, and is inspired by the vibrant Bangladeshi culture.

Project The Luci House was inspired by the curve of a breaching whale and is situated overlooking Electric Lake, Utah. Spiraling skylights that follow the curve of the building and a NanaWall create a visual connection to the beautiful mountain scenery. The master bedroom opens onto a secondstory deck, and the bed is situated beneath the glass roof, making it a room with a view.

Liberia Inspiration

Project Because of the extreme need for medical care of any kind in Liberia, Africa, this clinic was designed to function as a small hospital as needed. The space is efficient and minimal, as space is a commodity in the poorest country in the world. The colors, however, richly reflect the vibrant culture of Liberia. Exam Room Elevation

Project Spiraling upwards among the trees near Mount Cook, New Zealand, the Thayne House is a spun glass creation that seems too fantastical to be real (which, at this point in time, is true). Inspired by Mies van de Rohe’s Farnsworth House, the extremely minimalistic Thayne House is encased in glass, allowing the living spaces to blend effortlessly into its stunning environment. The house is built in such a way that it encourages its owners to enjoy the natural surroundings more than they enjoy the interior spaces.

Project The last decade has seen a sweeping rise in the immigration rates to Sweden. Thousands of asylum-seeking immigrants find themselves homeless or without living conditions that support a good quality of life. On a seemingly unrelated topic, industries are also finding themselves with a surplus of shipping containers that are cheaper to leave in a shipyard than to fill with products and distribute. With the housing needs of immigrant families entering Sweden and the environmental concerns of surplus shipping containers, the solution seems simple: shipping container refugee housing. The following are feasible, affordable, and comfortable options for personalized houses designed from shipping containers.

“BIG FAMILY” RENDERED FLOOR PLAN Because there are a variety of family types immigrating to Sweden, these floorplans are adjustable for more or fewer inhabitants. All the furniture was chosen from Ikea in Sweden and is affordable and readily-available. Ikea has in place a program that allows them to donate furniture to good causes, which may allow these shipping containers to be furnished at an even lower price than previously expected. These housing designs are flexible and comfortable, and will provide immigrants with a place to call “home.”

Project Cradled among evergreens, just north of Banff, Canada, is the NestHouse boutique hotel. This luxurious hotel is a hub between the attractions of tourism-driven Banff and the natural appeal of the surrounding mountains. The hotel itself was inspired by a bird’s nest: a natural structure that cradles its precious cargo, keeping it warm, insulated, and safe. The NestHouse was designed to provide visitors with stunning views from within a safe, comfortable and nature-driven interior, when guests are not enjoying time outdoors.
