We’re Looking Forward to the 2021 TASA Midwinter Conference!

T

hank you for registering for TASA’s 2021 Midwinter Conference! Our theme is “Leaders Cultivating Leaders,” and although we chose that conference theme long before the pandemic began, it certainly describes school leaders’ experience during the past year. Time and again we have turned to our fellow leaders for advice, support, and encouragement to overcome the new challenges put before us.

While we are disappointed that we will not be able to gather in-person to draw on each other’s wisdom, experience, and energy, we want you to know that we have been busy reinventing our premier conference into a virtual format that will provide you with the same high-quality content, engagement, and opportunities for making personal connections that you have come to expect from the TASA Midwinter Conference.

We will kick off the conference on Monday, January 25, with a conversation with Simon Sinek, optimist and author of “Start With Why” and “The Infinite Game.” And we will close out the conference on Wednesday with a presentation by Dr. Chris Howard, president of Robert Morris University. He will speak to us about “8 Ways to Accelerate Your Leadership Odyssey.” We can’t wait to hear from these Inspiring Leaders, and we hope that you are excited about them too!

The conference agenda is chock full of opportunities to learn from your fellow leaders and other experts.

New this year, we’re pleased to introduce a lineup of premier sessions on Monday. These will be moderated panel discussions on Racism, Equity & Diversity; Legislative & Policy Advocacy; Global Pandemic; Change Leadership; and Wellness. We hope you will find these sessions thought provoking and inspiring.

It wouldn’t be Midwinter without a little celebration, so we’re mixing in a few awards presentations, some fantastic student entertainment, and a bit of fun and networking with our evening virtual happy hours.

Conference Platform Quick Reference Guide For the 2021 TASA Midwinter Conference, we will use the Hopin virtual conference platform. With its many features, Hopin allows us to provide a full conference experience — keynote speakers, networking opportunities, expo booths, and breakout sessions — in an online environment.

Prior to the conference, please review the following recommendations for using Hopin: Join from laptop or PC. We recommend attending the conference through your laptop/PC, rather than your mobile device, for the best experience.

Use Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox as your browser. You must use Chrome (https://www.google.com/chrome) or Firefox (https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/browsers/) as your web browser to access all the features of the conference platform. Pro tip: Make sure your browser is up to date.

January 25 | 4:30 - 5:30 pm Unwind and relax at the end of the day Monday at the virtual President’s Reception. Bring your favorite beverage, and Tomar and the FCs will bring the music. The band is a mainstay on the Austin music scene and has been voted in the top five of the Austin Chronicle’s Music Poll for best Blues, Funk, and Soul artist more than once. In addition to numerous club dates throughout the U.S., they’ve performed at Austin City Limits (ACL), South by Southwest, Old Settlers, and many other festivals. Their second full-length album, “Rise Above,” is scheduled to be released in February. Also, be sure to drop by the special happy hour session rooms after the concert to meet up and chat about the day or just unwind.

We’ll close out the second full day of the conference with a special, “magical” virtual happy hour. Grab your favorite beverage, if you like, and join us for a brief break from reality. Entertainer Eric Lerner — self-billed as funny, quick witted, mesmerizing, jaw-dropping, earth-shaking, and incredibly good looking — will bring a little magic to Midwinter with a performance he has shared with leaders of Fortune 500 companies around the world. Eric is a former fifth-grade Houdini who later honed his skills on the famed cobblestoned streets of New York City’s South Street Seaport. Don’t miss it! Also, be sure to drop by the special happy hour session rooms after the show to meet up and chat about the day or just unwind.

January 25-27 | During General Sessions It wouldn’t be a Midwinter Conference without the amazing performances of our Texas students. Leander ISD’s Vandergrift High School Choir will kick off the Opening General Session on Monday with the National Anthem, while Mariachi Oro from McAllen High School in McAllen ISD, will close the session. The Conroe ISD Choir, made up of students and teachers, will perform during Tuesday’s Second General Session. Lewisville ISD’s Flower Mound High School Wind Symphony will perform during the Closing General Session on Wednesday.

Awards Presentations January 25-27 | During General Sessions It also wouldn’t be a Midwinter Conference without acknowledgment of some of our state’s most amazing school leaders and other educators. Over the course of the conference, we will recognize the 2020 Texas Superintendent of the Year, name TASA’s newest Honorary Life Members, award this year’s Johnny L. Veselka Scholarships, honor the Golden Deeds for Education Award recipient, and acknowledge a host of others who have made a difference in our Texas public schools.

Superintendent of the Year J.A. Gonzalez

Texas Nominee for 2021 National Superintendent of the Year and 2020 Texas Superintendent of the Year Recognized at the First General Session | January 25, 10:15-11:30 a.m. | Main Stage

I

n October 2020, following his selection as Region 1 Superintendent of the Year, the Texas Association of School Boards named McAllen ISD Superintendent J.A. Gonzalez, Ed.D., the 2020 Texas Superintendent of the Year. Then, in November, TASA named him Texas’ nominee for 2021 National Superintendent of the Year, an award given by AASA, The School Superintendents Association.

Gonzalez has served as superintendent of McAllen ISD, a district of nearly 22,000 students in the Rio Grande Valley, for the past four years. He has served as an administrator in the district for a total of 23 years. Prior to becoming superintendent, he held the position of Associate Superintendent for Instructional Leadership, coaching, supervising and evaluating principals in the district. He has also served as a principal, assistant principal, teacher and coach.

“Being an educator and having an influence on people is near and dear to my heart because when you look at it with depth and complexity and from a parent’s perspective, you start to understand the magnitude of what the field of education is all about,” Gonzalez said. “I am fascinated with the art of teaching and learning. Everyone is some kind of smart — be it mathematical, verbal, kinesthetic or musical. We all have a particular learning style, and it is our job, as educators, to help our students discover their talents and to build on their natural skill sets.”

Born in Laredo, Gonzalez was raised in Hebbronville. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from Texas A&M University–Kingsville and a Master of Science in Educational Administration from the University of Texas-Pan American. In 2008 he completed his doctorate in education with an emphasis in Educational Leadership through UT-Pan American.

Gonzalez has been a member of TASA since 2016. He also belongs to the Texas Association of Secondary School Principals (TASSP), as well as the Golden Key International Honor Society and the Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society. He serves on the UT-Rio Grande Valley College of Education Advisory Committee and is on the Board of Directors of the McAllen Chamber of Commerce and the South Texas Association of Schools.

The 2021 National Superintendent of the Year will be announced and the state nominees honored at AASA’s virtual National Conference on Education, February 18-19, 2021.

2020-21 TASA/TASB Exhibit of School Architecture Caudill Award Winners to be Recognized at the First General Session | January 25, 10:15-11:30 a.m. | Main Stage The TASA/TASB Exhibit of School Architecture (EoSA) showcases new and renovated Texas schools and celebrates excellence in planning and design of the learning environment. Eligible projects are newly constructed or renovated public education facilities completed in the past five years and not previously submitted in this annual exhibit.

This year, 48 projects - from 34 school districts, three colleges, and one regional education service center submitted by 18 architectural firms - are included in the online exhibit. (See all 48 projects: http://bit.ly/20-21-all-projects).

The EoSA awards are given at the discretion of a 12-member jury, which includes: four school board members, four school administrators, and four members from the Association for Learning Environments (A4LE) Southern Region.

The juried exhibit awarded 25 projects with Stars of Distinction for Excellence in one or more of the following six areas: design, value, sustainability, community, planning, and school transformation. Those projects are listed below.

Allen ISD, Georgetown ISD, Northwest ISD, and Richardson ISD were selected to receive the Caudill Award, the highest honor in the competition. The winning projects received at least four stars from the six areas of distinction. They will be honored during the TASA Midwinter Conference.

Johnny L. Veselka Scholarship Recognized at the Second General Session | January 26, 9-10:15 a.m. | Main Stage

Since 2014, TASA has awarded the Johnny L. Veselka Scholarship to outstanding doctoral students pursuing careers in educational leadership, with particular emphasis on the superintendency. The scholarship recognizes the leadership of Dr. Johnny L. Veselka, who dedicated nearly 44 years of service to the association, including 32 years as TASA executive director.

B. Michelle Rinehart is a full-time student working toward her doctorate in education leadership from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

Cicely Alexander is working toward her doctorate in educational leadership at Texas Tech University. She is the executive principal/executive director of Lubbock ISD’s Lubbock Partnership Network in-district charter.

Golden Deeds for Education Award Dr. Guy M. Sconzo

2020 Golden Deeds Award Recipient Recognized at the Closing General Session | January 27, 11 a.m.-12:15 p.m. | Main Stage

During the TASA Midwinter Conference, Dr. Guy M. Sconzo will be posthumously awarded the Golden Deeds for Education Award, given since 1964 and considered the most coveted award in the field of Texas education and the highest recognition for distinguished service to education in the state.

The Texas A&M University Department of Educational Administration and Human Resource Development and TASA co-present the Golden Deeds Award each year.

The award is given to an individual from any profession who has, through actions and deeds, improved the educational system in Texas to enrich the lives of all Texas public school students. Recipients are nominated by a committee of school district superintendents from across Texas.

Dr. Sconzo worked in education for four decades before passing away in April 2020, following a battle with cancer. He was a superintendent for 26 years, 15 of those spent with Humble ISD, and he served as executive director of the Fast Growth School Coalition just before his passing.

In 2007, he was named Texas State Superintendent of the Year. Under his leadership, Humble ISD was named the Best Large District in Texas in the 2015 H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards.

Sconzo was an advocate for the needs of all Texas schoolchildren. He was also a community leader, serving on the Boards of the Flaming Arrow District of the Boy Scouts of America, Humble Area Assistance Ministries, Humble Intercontinental Rotary, Lake Houston Area Chamber of Commerce, Lake Houston Family YMCA, Lone Star College Chancellor’s Executive Advisory Council, Memorial Hermann Northeast Hospital and University of Houston Impact Council.

Opening General Session: Simon Sinek Optimist and Author of “Start With Why” and “The Infinite Game” Conversation with Simon Sinek Moderated by Kevin Brown, TASA Executive Director Infinite Game: How can we win a game that has no end? The simple answer is we can’t. However, that’s exactly what so many organizations are trying to do.

The problem is, there is no such thing as “winning education.” In a game with no finish line and no agreed upon rules or metrics it is impossible to “be number one” or “be the best.” In this Infinite Game, there is only ahead and behind. Leaders of organizations must understand the rules of the Infinite Game.

Failure to do so dramatically increases the chance that they will set themselves on a path that eventually drains them of the will and resources to play at all. Eventually they will drop out of the game and no one will care. The game will go on without them. In his talk, Simon explores how understanding the rules of the Infinite Game is essential if any leader wants to stay ahead forever.

When the district makes decisions about extending Chapter 21 contracts, the financial implications are not always considered on the front end. This session will help attendees identify how sound contract decision-making may eliminate or reduce a negative budget impact. Experiences will be shared to prepare participants in mitigating budget impacts on contract management.

These students are less likely to achieve math and literacy proficiency, less likely to graduate from high school, and less likely to enroll in university. COVID-19 creates unique challenges for promoting strong attendance with the most vulnerable students disproportionately impacted by the negative consequences. Join a panel discussion about attendance and addressing chronic absenteeism in the COVID-19 environment and beyond. Prior to that, he served on the Dallas ISD Board of Trustees for more than four years. Morath graduated from Garland High School in Garland ISD. And thanks to the great public school education he received in Texas, he went on to earn a Bachelor of Business Administration degree, summa cum laude, from George Washington University in two-and-one-half years.

During the pandemic, it became critical to implement MTSS to ensure that students who were engaging remotely and in-person were successful. The session will focus on proactive approaches to ensure that schools are serving all of their vulnerable students with equity and excellence.

Dr. Howard will share personal and professional life lessons that he has learned throughout his athletic, intelligence, military, corporate, nonprofit, and higher education experiences. Never have these lessons been more relevant, given the crises that every organization has faced in 2020, from the pandemic to the recession to the struggle for social justice.

Effective September 1, 1999, individuals who have not completed all requirements for the Lifetime Superintendent Certificate will be issued the Standard Superintendent Certificate that must be renewed every five years. Current holders of the Lifetime Superintendent Certificate are not required to participate in the renewal process but may voluntarily choose to do so. The renewal process for superintendents, principals, and assistant principals includes obtaining 200 hours of continuing professional education (CPE) credit every five years. The local school board will be notified at the end of a five-year period of any employed superintendent participating in the renewal process, as required or voluntarily, who has not met renewal requirements.
