Greetings,

Thank you for taking the time to read our new and improved Annual Report. Within these pages, we aim to convey the tangible impact of our efforts, our shared values, and the sound financial standing we've achieved.

Recognizing the value of your time, we've distilled our achievements into three stories, each representing a facet of the vibrant TART community.

The first narrative, shared by one of our founders, Lois Bahle, goes beyond mere reminiscence. It speaks to the enduring power of purpose that launched our trail network.

The second account, offered by Becky Ewing and Bob Eichenlaub, celebrates the resilience and dedication of lifelong trail enthusiasts. Their tale underscores the transformative power of persistence and the lasting legacy of commitment.

Lastly, we hear from Jessica Alpers, a dedicated member of the TART Board, whose story exemplifies a deep-rooted belief in the potential of our endeavors and the promise of tomorrow.

Concluding our report, we provide an overview of our financial status and acknowledge the generosity of our supporters. Together, these numbers and individuals underscore the collective impact of our shared belief in the profound impact that trails have on our communities.

TART Trails Founder

In the fabric of my family's history, a thread weaves back to 1917, a time when my Great Grandfather played a pivotal role in rescuing a bankrupt railroad corridor. His efforts aimed to preserve a crucial transportation link connecting the people of Suttons Bay with Traverse City.

Fast forward to 1994, and I found myself joining the Leelanau Trails Association — a determined collective with a vision for a multi-use trail spanning from Greilickville to Northport. What an adventure! How hard can it be to build a free trail?

By 1998, the Leelanau Trail had joined forces with the Traverse Area Recreation Trail, Vasa Pathway, and Boardman Lake Trail, evolving into the TART Trails organization we recognize today. This transformation didn't come without its share of hurdles. Discussions about zoning permits and concerns from adjacent property owners tested the perseverance of volunteers and donors. Yet, our dedication prevailed, paving

the way for the community to enjoy these shared pathways that both visitors and residents enjoy.

During heated meetings with disgruntled adjacent property owners, my Dad, a steadfast supporter, would echo the mantra, "Never give up a right of way." His words resonated, and today, I am grateful to witness the results of those efforts. My hope is to witness, in my lifetime, the realization of a link to Northport.

As we reflect on the journey behind us, the true value of these trails is more apparent than ever. They serve as connectors, linking our communities together in a shared appreciation for the paths we traverse and the history that brought us here.

TART Trails Trailblazer Society Members

Spring, summer, fall, winter… each season brings a new perspective to my favorite stretches of the TART Trail network. As I enter my fifth decade of running, the trails provide a safe space to run and time to marvel at the deep history and commitment to health and well-being in our region that TART Trails brings to its work.

And it’s not easy work — the time to build trust, collaboration, and results with a myriad of partners — continues to amaze me. It has taken visionary leaders who offer an invitation to step in all the way, whether you are a volunteer, staffer, funder, state or local unit of government, Tribal Nation, National Lakeshore, community member, local artist, or nonprofit partner. It’s that inclusive invitation and accessibility to every member of our community that has made our trail network one of the finest anywhere.

My husband Bob and I have been on a number of bike trips abroad and we’ve yet to find a trail network that rivals our beloved TART. One only needs to see the heightened use and unique sense of place that’s been created in Glen Arbor, Empire, Suttons Bay, Medalie Park, and the Bayfront — ask any business owner in these small bergs how the trail has changed their communities for the better. Ask the trail users if they feel better when they are out on the trail. Consider supporting this amazing organization; we’ve recently become members of the Trailblazer Society as an expression of our trust and the work that will continue even after we’re gone.

TART Trails Board Member and Next Generation Donor

The TART Trails network has always been a stable presence in the different seasons of my life, creating and preserving memories of my time in the north. After moving to Traverse City in 2012, I found myself exploring the area via the Vasa Pathway and urban trail network, quickly falling in love with my new home. Upon moving to Leelanau County and starting a family a few years later, the Leelanau Trail and Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail became my new stomping grounds. My son spent the first three years of his life being pushed all over the trails in the jogging stroller — our record is a 14 mile run on Mother’s Day weekend along the Leelanau Trail.

Once my daughter joined our family, the double jogging stroller became our go to mode of transport on the trails, while the bike trailer was converted into a ski trailer for the snowy months. My son quickly transitioned out of the stroller and onto his balance bike, proudly proclaiming the Parallel Trail was “his trail.” I watched as my little one gained confidence cruising the twists and turns of the trail, while I huffed along on the pavement trying to keep up with him. Over the years, we have watched snapping turtles lay eggs along the trail, owls swoop overhead, said hello to everyone we passed, stopped to listen to spring peepers, bandaged banged up knees from gnarly descents, and doled out countless snacks. This year we will reach a new, much anticipated milestone: we will all be able to bike together as a family.

As the trail network continues to grow, we create more childhood memories, tackling the new miles of trail and eagerly anticipating the miles to come. Each new mile of trail creates a safe space for my children to learn how to ride on two wheels, explore our

beautiful region, and feel a sense of ownership and respect for the land that surrounds us. When I first learned of the upcoming Nakwema Trailway, I immediately envisioned biking the pathway with my children and grandchildren, learning about and appreciating the significance of Anishinaabeg settlements and showing our gratitude for the caretakers of the land. As a sixth generation farmer, I look forward to the crucial connections the Nakwema Trailway will create for agritourism, as growers work to evolve family farms into diverse operations. Our region will continue to grow, but the TART Trails network will continue to grow with it, providing a refuge from the hustle and bustle of the world by creating and maintaining safe places for our children to connect with people, places, and nature.

We coordinate closely with public, private, corporate and nonprofit partners to make sure every dollar we receive is leveraged to its fullest potential. Gifts to the Go Farther Fund provide TART Trails with significant capital and flexibility to grow our trail network, pursue property acquisition opportunities, and tackle critical projects with quickness that enable us to meet our communities’ needs and create meaningful connections.

With a $1,000+ annual contribution, Sustainers are a group of individuals, organizations and businesses committed to a shared vision for thriving, connected communities through trails.

Our planned giving program makes it easy to designate TART Trails in your estate plans, ensuring a lasting legacy.
