How a Project Comes to
Life
The Three Mile Trail Extension and Safe Routes to School project is the embodiment of a shared vision brought to life through the dedication and passion of many. This project exemplifies how community dreams take shape and grow into meaningful change, and this is what TART Trails is all about.
It begins with the voices of community members—parents, students, and residents—who share their hopes for safer streets, stronger connections, and a healthier future. Their vision for vibrant, walkable, and bike-friendly neighborhoods lays the groundwork. Organizations like Norte amplify these voices, advocating for the transformative power of active transportation and empowering young people to lead the way.
The realization of this vision depends on strong partnerships. Property easement collaborators, like the Conservancy and Alta Vista, see how their land can become a critical link in a larger network. Local governments, such as East Bay Township, provide essential funding and planning support, demonstrating their commitment to building infrastructure that prioritizes safety and accessibility. Residents, schools, educators, and families speak up, ensuring that the needs of students and the community remain at the center of the project.
This is who we are. TART Trails is not just an organization—it’s a reflection of all of us, working together to shape the places we live, learn, and grow. The trails connect more than points on a map; they connect people to each other, to the land, and to a shared vision for the future. With every project, like the Three Mile Trail Extension, we are reminded that trails are not just built—they are cultivated by the hands and hearts of a community that believes in what we can achieve together.

Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy Director of Facilities and Insured Risk
The Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy is thrilled to collaborate with TART Trails, Norte, and East Bay Township to provide a trailhead and route through Mitchell Creek Meadows: The Don and Jerry Oleson Nature Preserve. This initiative will extend the Three Mile Trail from South Airport Road to Hammond Road, creating vital connections for schools and neighborhoods along the rapidly growing Hammond Road corridor to downtown Traverse City, Boardman Lake, and the amenities of East Grand Traverse Bay.
While cars are convenient, they are also confining. Bikes offer freedom—unless you're navigating busy, shoulder-less roads. Thankfully, our regional trail network provides a safe, convenient alternative that allows many of us to leave our cars behind for commutes to work, school, or an afternoon adventure. As our community grows, so must our trails to meet the demand for sustainable and accessible transportation options.
The trail extension will meander through cedar groves and marigold meadows, opening into a wildflower prairie before following Vanderlip Creek southward through hardwoods and pines to Hammond Road. It will link several schools to the McMullen Family Conservation Center, located on the former Mitchell Creek Golf Course. This center, home to the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy's headquarters, offers students hands-on opportunities to learn about environmental stewardship through access to wetlands, tributaries of Mitchell Creek, and numerous land and watershed restoration projects.
This is an exciting and impactful project, and we eagerly anticipate welcoming trail users—both new and familiar—to the Preserve.

East Bay Township Director of Planning & Zoning
The Three Mile Trail Extension will transform how students, residents, and employees travel in East Bay Township. Like many suburban areas, much of East Bay Township was developed during the automobile era, with little consideration for safe, accessible, multimodal transportation options to meet residents' daily needs. As a result, neighborhoods are often cut off from schools, workplaces, grocery stores, and parks by high-speed roads.
Over the past several years, the Township has been working collaboratively with TART Trails, Norte, and the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy to address this challenge. Last year, the Township Board demonstrated its commitment by allocating $1 million to the Three Mile Trail Extension project. This trail, along with new Safe Routes to School infrastructure, will create vital connections in a rapidly growing area of the Township. It will link hundreds of homes and businesses and more than 4,000 students to five area schools, a grocery store, a library, a conservation center, and other key destinations.
Community enthusiasm for these improvements is clear, as demonstrated by recent public input sessions and surveys. Just this past fall, Cherry Knoll Elementary hosted a remote drop-off event, inviting students to walk to school for the first time. The turnout was remarkable, with students experiencing the joy of walking to school—a first for many.
The Three Mile Trail will enable the next generation of East Bay Township students to integrate active transportation into their daily lives. On a personal note, I am excited about the prospect of biking with my kids to East Middle School and to work once the trail system is complete.

In 2016, my family moved back to Northern Michigan and settled in East Bay Township, near Three Mile Road and Hammond. Since then, we have been eagerly anticipating the extension of the Three Mile Trail.
After living in a one-bedroom apartment in a bike-friendly city for 12 years, we were excited to find a home in a rural setting. However, in doing so, we gave up the convenience of multi-modal transportation routes connecting our home, work, and other community destinations. We love everything about where we live—except for the feeling of being trapped by Three Mile Road and Hammond Road. As a result, my husband and I find ourselves back to driving every day.
During my time in a bike-friendly city, I grew to love smart commuting because it made it easy to get outside and exercise every day, even after long workdays. It became part of my routine, providing both exercise and a transition time between my job and my “other job” as a mom at home.
To preserve that important transition time outdoors, I now drive to the TART trail, park, and then bike from there. But I can’t wait for the day when I can bike directly from my house again.
Beyond commuting, we’re excited to share the joy of biking with our kids, riding straight from our door into town. There are many adults and children in the area who will benefit from this trail extension. The Three Mile/Hammond intersection is home to four schools, a library, a grocery store, and other conveniences, along with several growing neighborhoods. Our rapidly expanding community will enjoy and benefit greatly from this trail extension. It will certainly influence healthy lifestyles for both children and adults in this growing part of Traverse City.

If you live in Northern Michigan and enjoy spending time outdoors, chances are you’ve taken advantage of the TART Trails at some point. This extension from Three Mile Road to the Conservation Center, and beyond, would make that even more likely—especially if you live on the east side of Traverse City.
As part of Norte Youth Cycling, we go on long rides to explore cool places. More often than not, we take the TART Trails to get there. For example, we might leave the Civic Center, hop on the TART Trail along Parsons Road, and head up to Three Mile. Stopping to check out Mitchell Creek for seasonal fish is always a highlight. As a fisherman, I’m constantly drawn to water—whether it’s a river, creek, or pond—searching for darting trout or sunbathing bass.
Through my rides with Norte, I’ve learned it’s not always about the destination—it’s about the journey. Discovering interesting spots along the way makes every ride memorable. That’s why we’re on bikes instead of driving in cars, right? We’re always looking for the next adventure.
So, what could be our next cool adventure? The Mitchell Creek Meadows Preserve could be it!
Unfortunately, for now, it’s one of those hard-to-reach places if you’re on foot or bike. If we head south on
Three Mile via the TART Trail, we hit South Airport Road, and that’s where the sidewalk ends—literally. It’s a busy road with a 45-mph speed limit, and it’s just not safe to lead a group of kids along the shoulder.
A connection between that sidewalk and Hammond Road would be a game-changer—not just for fun rides but for daily commuting, too. I live near the corner of South Airport and Three Mile, and I see people walking or biking on the unsafe busy road every day. There’s a clear need for non-motorized infrastructure to connect people in these neighborhoods.
If we had a safe connection, we could ride a trail all the way to the Conservation Center and enjoy some truly off-the-beaten-path adventures. Even better, linking up to Hammond Road would connect the surrounding schools, making it easier for students and families to commute on foot or by bike.
