Changing Gears: Don Cunkle and Recycle-a-Bicycle Look to the Future

Since its inception in 2007, the Recycle-a-Bicycle program has been led by Don Cunkle with the support of many volunteers and trusty Ambassadors who have poured their hearts and souls into helping people who may not otherwise have the financial resources to attain bicycles to help fulfill their transportation needs.

Over that time, this group of volunteers have provided over 2,000 free bikes and well over 400 free repairs to those in need. It is a remarkable example of how people working together can improve the lives of others.

Now it is time for Don to turn over the reins of leading the program to Melissa and Jeff Zawisza who will take over the administrative tasks such as record keeping, scheduling and general management of the program. These two have been engaged as pillars of the R-A-B program for years and are ready to carry on the tradition set in place by the program’s pioneer architect and founder.

We’re excited to be taking an increased role in the R-A-B program. Our previous experience in Midland and 5 years working with Don have shown us the value to both individuals and the community of getting transportation and recreation opportunities to those who need them. Moving forward, we are hoping to build on the already robust program by strengthening connections with the community organizations to enhance the program even further.”
