JARROD CROKER IS IN A LEAGUE OF HIS OWN!

Canberra Raiders’ captain Jarrod Croker (left) has a great second ‘career’ in mind when he retires from rugby league horses.

The nation capital’s team skipper has dabbled in standardbred and thoroughbred racing with quite some success, partnering with family members and friends.

Jarrod part-owns the Goulburntrained galloper Intuition, a five-year-old prepared by Kurt Goldman, who started in last year’s rich, prestigious $1.3million Kosciuszko at Randwick.

“He’s a little jet,” Jarrod said of his pride-and-joy, who is not far off Group company.

“I bought a piece of a couple of gallopers when I was 18, but they weren’t much chop, but things have changed since then.”

Jarrod Croker was part of a syndicate which raced Real Obsession, a winner at Goulburn in 2017 with trainer-driver Brad Hewitt Several players and staff from the Raiders joined their captain and centre in Real Obsession, a New Zealand-bred standardbred mare, who notched several wins, with a 1:53.4 career best.

Ownership included coach Ricky Stuart, Sam Williams, Elliott Whitehead, Shannon Boyd, Luke Bateman and Glen Buttriss.

Harness racing trainer-driver Brad Hewitt is one of Jarrod’s best mates, and has prepared up to nine pacers for Jarrod and co-owners at any one time.

“The first horse we had won five or six straight when he got here from New Zealand, and I was hooked then,” Jarrod said.

“We keep rolling them over, using prizemoney to buy more, and it keeps me occupied off the football field. It’s a great hobby to have, and so many of my friends and family are now involved, too.

“Most of my mates follow the races and my father has always loved racing: I kind of grew up with it."

An unlucky French jockey broke his jaw on a rival horse's hoof after it somersaulted during a cross-country race in Craon.

Diamond Dark fell in a horrific tumble at the biggest fence, when Erwan Bureller's horse, Sulfite, was too late to swerve out the way, leaving one of Diamond Dark's flailing hooves to smash into the rival rider's face.

One grisly image shows the hoof smashing into Bureller's lower jaw, with the upper jaw perched over the top of the hoof as the bone breaks during the steeple. The two horses escaped unscathed despite the painful-looking fall. Bureller's fractured jaw was the only injury suffered by the two jockeys. The other jockey, Romain Julliot, and the two horses involved in the fall recovered without problems.

CANADA

Woodbine Racetrack

Thoroughbreds race throughout Canada, in areas as diverse as Alberta, British Columbia, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Quebec, Ontario and Prince Edward Island.

The majority of feature Canadian races are conducted at Woodbine, which hosts the first and final legs of the Canadian Triple Crown; the middle peg is run at Fort Erie.

Northern Dancer, who became the darling of the country in the 1960s, was the first Canadian-bred horse to win the prestigious Kentucky Derby.

Northern Dancer in 1983 ‘The Dancer,’ who was also Canadian-owned, was the first nonhuman to be inducted into the Canadian Sports Hall Of Fame, back in 1965.

Racing first began at Fort Erie in 1897, with the track known as the border oval due to its proximity to the United States border.

Apart from the Prince of Wales Stakes, the second jewel of the Triple Crown, there aren’t that many other races run on this picturesque track - most main events have been moved to Woodbine.

Woodbine, which opened in 1956, hosts flat thoroughbred and harness races.

The first leg of the Triple Crown is the Queen’s Plate, over 11/4miles; the second leg is the Prince of Wales Stakes, over 1 3/16 miles, with the final jewel of the Crown is the Breeders’ Stakes, over 1 1/2 miles.

Apart from the Queen’s Plate, the Breeders’ Stakes and the Canadian International, other notable races are held there, including the Woodbine Mile, Northern Dancer Turf Stakes, E.P. Taylor Stakes and the Nearctic Stakes.

Unlike the American Triple Crown, the Crown races in Canada are all held on different surfaces. The first, the Queen’s Plate, is run on Polytrack, the Prince of Wales Stakes takes place on dirt, and the Breeders’ Stakes is a turf event.

REDCLIFFE SALE ON SUNDAY MARCH 28 - IT’S GARRARDS! Pacers and trotters are represented in this year’s Garrards Redcliffe Yearling Sale.

It’s the 14th conduct of the standardbred auction, and like every other one, this is proudly sponsored by Garrards.

The sale is linked to rich two and threeyear-old series, open only to horses which go through the ring under sales agent and auctioneer Darren Ebert (left).

This auction has been widely-supported throughout, thanks to the outstanding youngsters which have been knocked down.

The sale will be held at the Redcliffe Paceway, on Sunday, March 28, with a 12noon start.

In the event of an inability to conduct the ‘in person’ sale, it will be an internet-only auction, which worked so well for the first time in 2020.

“No matter what, we’ll be offering the yearlings on line, at the very least, but our plans and hopes are for the sale to be be held at Redcliffe, and beamed out on the ‘net,” Darren said.

Redcliffe Harness Racing Club President Bernie Ring said there is always an air of anxious expectation concerning the sale, and subsequent race series.

“This is the biggest sale, numbers-wise in Queensland, and the Club is right behind the sales agents and wonderful sponsorship by Garrards, whose Founding Director, C.J. Garrard, is the Redcliffe Club Patron,” he said.

The attached two-year-old series is held with a $100,000 minimum final, plus a $5000 bonus for the breeder of the juvenile final winner.

If that isn’t enough, the trainer of the two-year-old Garrards Final winner will also receive a Rio Mark 11 racing sulky.

Minimum prizemoney for the corresponding three-year-old final in 2023 will be $35,000.

Also, don’t forget to put a ring around the first Saturday night in March - March 6 - it’s the date of the Garrards Miracle Mile at Tabcorp Park, Menangle.

This is the first such sponsorship of Australasia’s greatest sprint at the home of New South Wales harness racing, and Garrards is proud to be involved.

Vitamin E deficiency in horses Dietary deficiency of vitamin E can lead to three specific neurologic and muscular diseases.

These diseases are the only conditions definitively associated with vitamin E deficiency.

Vitamin E is an essential nutrient for horses. This antioxidant helps maintain normal neurological function by limiting the damage caused by oxidative stress and free radicals. The best source of vitamin E is fresh green grass.

Nothing is known about vitamin E metabolism in horses, the appropriate dosage, or its actual efficacy in preventing or treating other neurological conditions.

Horses that graze on lush green pastures often have adequate access to vitamin E. However, many stabled horses are not maintained on pasture.

Vitamin E levels decrease and eventually are lost as soon as grass is harvested, so even the highest-quality hay will not meet vitamin E requirements. Some horses maintained on diets deficient in vitamin E can experience significant health consequences.

Vitamin E helps a horse’s muscles and nerves function properly.

A dietary deficiency can lead to three specific diseases:(1) equine neuroaxonal dystrophy/equine degenerative myeloencephalopathy (eNAD/EDM), (2) equine motor neuron disease (EMND) and (3) vitamin E deficient myopathy (VEM) These diseases are typically diagnosed based on clinical signs, exclusion of other disorders, and low concentrations of vitamin E in the blood.

Equine neuroaxonal dystrophy/equine degenerative myeloencephalopathy occurs in young animals and has a genetic predisposition.

Affected horses may stand with forelimbs too far apart (or too close together), have difficulty navigating curbs or hills, or lack coordination while walking and making tight turns.

Signs of the disease can vary: some horses show mild performance issues, while others are severely debilitated. Although the exact cause of the degeneration is unknown, a specific interaction between genetics and nutrition during the first few years of life is required for this disease to manifest.

In humans, the same enzymes that metabolise vitamin E also metabolise approximately 50 per cent of therapeutic drugs, so supplementation with vitamin E could potentially alter the effects of other drugs if a horse is on multiple therapies.

Therefore, while vitamin E supplementation may not necessarily be harmful with respect to other neurologic diseases, it is unlikely to be beneficial.

Since there are no effective treatments for most diseases caused by vitamin E deficiency, prevention is key. If horses are not able to access fresh pastures to graze, vitamin E must be supplemented in their diets.

However, not all vitamin E supplements are created equally. Baseline blood vitamin E concentrations should always be assessed before initiating any vitamin E supplementation.

Owners should consult with their veterinarians to determine if vitamin E supplementation is required and identify the best supplementation regimen for their particular horse.

DEATH OF 1960 MELBOURNE CUP WINNING JOCKEY BILLY SMITH W.A. ‘Billy’ Smith, who won the 1960 Melbourne Cup with 50-1 outsider Hi Jinx, died late last year.

Mr Smith (above), who was 92, died because of age-related causes at the Gold Coast Private Hospital.

As well as beating Howsie and Ilumquh in the ‘big one,’Mr Smith rode Summer Fair to annex the 1961 Caulfield Cup. The popular former hoop moved to the Coast from Victoria in 1980, and worked for many years behind the bar at the Benowa Tavern and Wallaby Hotel.

Born in Ballarat, the featherweight was inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame in 2018 after a career in the saddle which spanned more than 40 years.

The former star apprentice had a penchant for winning on roughies, as during his indentured time he rode the Lou Robertson-trained Air Marshall (100-1) to take out the 1947 VRC Standish Handicap.

The ever-smiling horseman moved to New Zealand after coming out of his ‘time,’ where he won five premierships, and which led to his gaining the Melbourne Cup ride on the mare Hi Jinx.

Billy Smith won the 1960 Melbourne Cup with the 50-1 chance Hi Jinx Mr Smith rose to become Victoria’s premier jockey in the 1960-’61 season, with other feature wins including the 1962 Perth Cup,1963 Sydney Cup and Brisbane Cup in 1968.

Included in his 18 Group One victories were wins with outstanding gallopers Begonia Belle and Winfreux.

Equine Immune Response Courtesy www.thehorse.com Many owners place great faith in nutritional supplements to ward off disease and inflammation in their performance horses: cautious optimism is warranted.

During the 2020 American Association of Equine Practitioners’ Convention, held virtually, Lori Warren, PhD, PAS, an equine nutritionist at the University of Florida, reviewed what scientists know about the horse’s immune system and the potential to enhance disease resistance through dietary means.

Omega-6 is equally important as omega-3—the two work together within cells. Study results have shown that horses with respiratory disease and osteoarthritis receiving both omega-3s and -6s experience a reduction in inflammatory markers.

Although no hard conclusions have been drawn, the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine recommends adding the omega-3 docosahexaenoic acid to the diets of horses with inflammatory airway disease.

Horses in training and competition invariably face stressors that tax their immune systems, including strenuous exercise, long-distance hauling, and concentrated stabling at showgrounds and racetracks where they’re at increased risk of exposure to pathogens (diseasecausing organisms).

In addition to a good vaccination program, a balanced diet is one of the best defences a horse has against disease, said Warren. Every nutrient is important - any deficiencies or imbalances in essential amino acids, fatty acids, vitamins, minerals, and fibre can compromise immune function.

Antioxidants Antioxidants are among the most popular supplements, and vitamin E is one of the most studied.

Deficiencies have been associated with neurologic and inflammatory diseases, and veterinarians typically recommend supplementation for affected horses.

However, for healthy athletes whose daily requirements are being met, research suggests feeding extra vitamin E does not provide additional immune-boosting benefits, said Warren. Ditto for selenium and vitamin C, although it is unclear what role it plays in immune function.

The American National Research Council has not established a daily requirement for vitamin C in the equine diet, perhaps because horses can synthesise it in the liver, and excess C gets flushed from the body.

Warren noted that some horses with active inflammation might benefit from receiving an antioxidant “cocktail” that includes vitamin C. She also cautioned that if owners have been feeding vitamin C and then decide to discontinue doing so, it should be tapered off rather than stopped cold turkey so the body’s natural synthesis of vitamin C can resume.

Omega Fatty Acids Omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids are recognised for their immune-boosting properties which can’t be synthesised so they must be present in the horse’s diet.

A forage-rich ration that includes pasture and hay is an oftendiscounted source of omegas, so supplemental fat might not be needed.

Functional Fibre Functional fibres are indigestible carbohydrates that pass through the digestive tract until reaching the hindgut, where they are fermented by microbes.

Also marketed as “prebiotics,” these fibres are more than just a simple energy source, Warren said. They exert a positive effect on immunity by:• Establishing beneficial bacteria in the hindgut; • Binding to pathogens; • Supporting epithelial cells; and • Interacting with immune cells.

Yeast Yeast is yet another promising feed additive. In one study, researchers fed pregnant mares yeast in the final weeks before foaling.

After birth, they had higher-quality colostrum (antibody-rich first milk), greater passive transfer (of antibodies to foals), and stronger neutrophil function in their foals.

Flaxseed, linseed, sea algae, and cold-water fish oils are good sources of omega-3s.

In a separate study, researchers fed dams and foals yeast supplements and noted measurable increases in fecal IgA— protective factors that are “first lines of defence against pathogens in the gut,” Warren said.

Fish oil and algae have an advantage in that the fatty acids’ molecular structure provides a biological shortcut to being used by the cells in the body. Corn, soy, and other plant oils are good sources of omega-6s.

In yet another study, senior horses fed a yeast culture supplement had an improved immune response, as well as a reduction in inflammatory cytokines, when vaccinated against equine influenza.

The white line of the foot can be seen by looking at the sole of your horse’s hoof. The area (that looks whitish) between the outside hoof wall and where it meets the sole is the white line.

Hoof Anatomy Review

When this becomes damaged, it allows fungus and/or bacteria to invade and separate the layers of the hoof wall. When that happens, the infection can spread around the hoof and up the inside of the wall to gradually 'eat away at the hoof, making a horse lame.

White Line Disease is a misnomer, as the white line is not involved, but rather the deepest layer of the non-pigmented stratum medium. White Line Disease has many other names: stall rot, hollow foot, wall thrush, and seedy toe. For ease of our discussion in this article, we’ll refer to this problem as White Line Disease.

White Line Disease

What You See White Line Disease is characterised by progressive hoof wall separation that occurs in the non-pigmented horn of the hoof at the junction between the stratum medium (middle layer of the hoof capsule) and laminar horn.

The separation is usually progressive, and it typically involves the toe and quarters of the hoof.

“Back 10-15 years ago, every time you would open a magazine, you would see an ad for a topical treatment that said it would kill White Line Disease,” Rob Spencer, farrier and co-owner of the Equine Podiatry Centre near Lexington, Kentucky, United States of America, said.

“You won’t find that anywhere now, and the reason is someone finally took the time to identify the (fungal) spores common in White Line Disease.”

Burney Chapman, farrier and Susan Sharp, PhD, director of clinical microbiology at M Sinai Medical Center, were the first to extensively study what caused the horn wall to deteriorate to the soft, white, chalky state associated with White Line Disease.

“He identified 22 spores associated with White Line Disease, but there were six they couldn’t kill in the lab,” Mr Spencer said. “They could knock them back, but they couldn’t eradicate them for whatever 34

A hoof is layered from the outside in (hoof wall, hoof horn, laminae).

The hoof wall supports the brunt of the horse’s weight rather than the sole of the foot. The hoof wall is similar to your finger nail in that it’s made of dead cells that are unable to heal; they must be regrown when damaged, such is the case with horses affected with White Line Disease.

Beneath the hoof wall is the hoof horn, which is attached to the laminae, which are attached to the third phalanx (P3 or coffin bone). At the top of the hoof is the coronary band, the source of nutrition for the hoof wall, which is similar to the cuticle of you fingernail.

The front of the hoof is called the toe, the sides are called the quarters, and the back of the hoof is called the heel. The hoof wall and hoof horn meet the sole at the bottom of the hoof.

The rubbery, V-shaped tissue that protrudes from the middle of the sole to the back of the hoof is the frog, which acts like a shock absorber.

The frog also helps promote blood circulation in the hoof through a pumping action as the hoof hits the ground.

How White Line Disease Starts White Line Disease is an opportunistic disease, meaning the pathogens take advantage of a weakened or compromised hoof wall, such as hoof wall separation caused by an improperly balanced hoof (such as too much toe, which can cause mechanical separation of the hoof wall).

“White Line Disease is opportunistic, and there is a mix of fungi in there,” Mr Spencer said. “It eats the stratum which is the nonpigmented (middle) section of the horn wall.”

Mr Spencer said that a decade ago, he used to shoe horses with White Line Disease in a regular flat shoe, but he has evolved to using more advanced techniques that involve adding bevel or “rocker” to the shoe. This, he says, creates a breakover for the hoof to match the angle of the boney column of the leg, reducing the amount of stress on the toe of the hoof wall.

Being able to manipulate the hoof’s breakover point also lets farriers reduce stress on the compromised area.

“According to our beliefs, there is a mechanical tearing that occurs when you have a flat shod horse,” Mr Spencer said. “In a flat-shod horse, the bone wants to break over before the hoof. You have a mechanical lever with the toe that literally tears the hoof wall. Then you have an opportunistic ‘bug’ that can invade that cavity, causing White Line Disease.”

Mr Spencer said: “If the measurement is at 3.5cm, the wall is tearing quicker than the horse is growing foot. So if you are growing maximum amount of foot, and the lesion is still getting bigger, you have no other option but to resect it.”

He said that the fungi and bacteria present in these situations are sensitive to light and air, so covering the area with glue will help the fungi grow; in other words, avoid glueing on a shoe.

To reduce the amount of pressure on the toe of the hoof, Mr Spencer said: “We’ve gone to shoeing those things with just mild rocker in them to try to balance the hoof wall breakover to the digital breakover to eliminate the mechanical tearing.”

He believes that the frog and bars of the hoof need to be supported.

Fighting White Line Disease debridement (removal of the infected hoof wall), secondary problems can occur.

“Once you start taking the hoof wall away and you don’t support the bony column, you can have laminitis secondary to the wall becoming detached because of White Line Disease,” Mr Spencer said.

Treatment Options Treatment options for White Line Disease will depend on the severity of the damage to the hoof. If caught early, it is manageable - the horse can return to work without a layoff.

However, if the fungi and bacteria are allowed to make headway in the hoof wall, treatment can become much more problematic, requiring special shoes, boots, or even a cast, not to mention several months to grow out the hoof.

When the hoof wall is severely damaged, the best method of treatment is to remove (debride) the affected hoof wall.

“If you were to come in here with a horse that had a radiographic lesion that wasn’t huge, we’d clean it all out and trim the foot,” Mr Spencer explained. “We’d measure the lesion and make a note of it.

So, say that lesion was 3cm centimeters. When you come back in four to five weeks, I take the shoes off, trim the hoof, and I measure again.

If they come back and that lesion is 2.5cm, that means that we are getting ahead of the wall’s tearing.”

If that is the case, soaking the hoof in a chlorine-based agent once or twice a week and keeping the hoof as clean as possible is recommended.

“Even if we use a three degree wedge aluminum shoe, rocker that a little bit, and bevel the toe off real hard to bring that break over back–I always weld a frog support bar, or I fill (that area of the hoof) with some type of pour-in pad—once you lose a certain amount of integrity in the wall, your sole starts to prolapse and produces a mechanical laminitic episode that’s caused by failure of the attachment. You’ve got to support that digit,” Mr Spencer said.

Mr Spencer said if the White Line Disease is not under control on its own, he goes straight to debridement.

He will also have the owners put the horse on some type of hoof supplement that contains biotin to promote hoof growth.

Movement will also promote blood circulation that can increase hoof growth. If the horse is comfortable moving around and is not in pain, it’s recommended that he be put on some kind of exercise program, turnout, hand walking, or light riding.

By far the best thing to do is to catch it early. Farriers can catch early signs of White Line Disease. Little cavities in the white line, or a seedylooking toe, are signs of the onset of White Line Disease.

Prevention Keeping horses’ hooves well-balanced and trimmed regularly will prevent tearing of the hoof wall, which can create cavities for fungi and bacteria to invade.

White Line Disease can often be a secondary complication to another hoof disorder. It usually only invades weakened areas of the hoof wall, whether it’s old nail tracks or areas of hoof wall separation.

It’s common to get White Line Disease in horses with club feet, where the hoof dishes or flares, old abscess tracks, old quarter cracks. It’s common for foundered horses to get secondary White Line Disease.

One of the best ways to help your horse avoid contracting White Line Disease is by practicing proper hoof hygiene. Simple steps such as picking your horse’s feet daily can help reduce the risk of contracting this potentially debilitating disease.

Extreme weather conditions are thought to increase the hoof’s uptake of these fungi. So during overly wet or drought conditions, greater care should be taken to ensure proper hoof hygiene.

Take-Home Message White Line Disease, if caught early, can be managed. Good hoof hygiene and recognising early signs of the disease are essential to controlling the problem.

Treatment for White Line Disease is generally successful, but can be time-consuming since the hoof wall must grow out and replace the damaged area.

SAY NO TO RODENTS Garrards, the company with a time-tested background in pest control, is your best bet when it comes to rodent control inand-around your stables.

Put simply, mice and rats bring disease - a no-no when it comes to equine welfare.

Rats are drawn to horse feed These unwanted guests are a given at most stables, even if there’s a barn cat in attendance.

Rodents must not be accepted into stables - and disease is the main reason: rodents carry several diseases transferable to both horses and humans.

Their fees and urine can contaminate feed with diseases such as leptospirosis, salmonella and trichinosis, and also carry fleas, mites and ticks.

All feed and supplements should be kept in rodent-proof containers and metal garbage cans with lids. Because plastic and wood containers are vulnerable to chewing, metal is a preferred option.

Stand-alone feed unprotected in feed rooms just provide these pesky critters with an open invitation to come a calling.

It is vital to dispose of any feed contaminated with rodent feces during storage: it can’t and won’t do for your horses.

What lurks behind the stable door?

Feed room hygiene is important - sweep any dropped feed that would otherwise provide easy pickings, and dispose of it in a secured metal container labelled as garbage.

Cans should be regularly pulled away from walls and the feed room floor should be swept around them.

Apart from the obvious drawback of disease, rats are ravenous eaters and can consume surprisingly large amounts of feed - mature rats eat an ounce of feed a day.

Because rats have five litters a year with as many as 14 babies each litter, it will all add up: rodents have a huge multiplication factor, and once they’re in, it’s hard to get them out!

Not only should the feed be stored securely, but so should the feed room. Mice only need a 1cm hole to gain entry, and small rats can work their way through even smaller holes.

Windows and doors should be secured tightly with no gaps around frames - holes, no matter how small, should be plugged.

Mice and rats like creature comforts - for that reason keep blankets, saddle pads and any spare equipment stored in rodent-proof containers.

If you don’t these unwanted visitors will seek them as bedding material and nesting sites.
