ABOUT BRIBIE.

Beautiful Bribie

Bribie Island’s unspoilt beauty still attracts visitors and new residents all year round. Bribie is the third largest island in Moreton Bay and the only one that is connected to the mainland by a bridge, making it easily accessible and a popular choice for holiday makers and weekend visitors. Being just a 20 minute drive off the Bruce Highway, beautiful Bribie offers a variety of activities and areas to explore so it’s worth visiting us to find out what your favourite one is. Bribie has been through many changes over the years and the population has certainly grown but somehow it still retains its small community atmosphere which is one of the reasons many people return regularly to Bribie Island. Bribie was fairly isolated, like many islands in Moreton Bay, until 1912 when a jetty was built at Bongaree. This enabled boats to berth here and the passenger boat, SS Koopa, soon began regular trips from Brisbane, via Redcliffe loaded with visitors to the island. Goods could also be more easily transported to the island which made living here for the small number of permanent residents that bit easier. In the 1930s Bribie became popular with visitors coming over for day trips or to camp or stay for longer with their families. More businesses opened at this time such as guesthouses and the bowling club that is still situated on Welsby Parade. In 1939, with the outbreak of World War II, Bribie Island became a military zone and civilians were no longer allowed access. A small number of locals were allowed to stay, mostly those with established businesses or services that were required for the military. When the war was over, Bribie’s reputation as a day-trip destination once again became popular. Another milestone and change for Bribie Island was when the island became accessible to all with the opening of the Bribie Bridge in 1963. Originally there was a toll on the bridge but luckily the toll paid off the bridge in just five years, this has led to many visitors, families and retirees coming to enjoy our island ever since. The influx of families calling Bribie home means the activities on offer have increased to cater for all these new residents. Many family friendly events and activities are now on offer all year round.

If you enjoy getting back to nature Bribie Island offers you wide sandy ocean beaches, mangroves, tidal creeks, lagoons, grasslands and woodlands. The Pumicestone Passage offers the perfect location for a variety of activities from fishing boats and sailing craft to kayaking and paddle boarding. Not to mention the well loved activity of relaxing by the water doing, not much at all, and maybe watching the kids or family totally enjoying themselves. If you don’t have any boating gear all you need is to find your own perfect patch of beach and enjoy what nature has to offer. Bribie offers a great variety of fishing options, from land or sea. You can drop a line in most areas around Bribie depending on what you want to catch or the view you want to enjoy. If you have a boat you have even more areas to try. If you don’t have your own boat hire a BBQ boat from Spinnaker Marina and get everything you need included for the day. Driving or bike riding around Bribie Island is a great way to check out all the different suburbs and what they have. You’ll find an array of playgrounds scattered throughout the island that are popular with the kids and the adults, will love the covered bbq areas and other amenities located near them all. For nearly all locations it’s just a short stroll to the water for a swim or relaxing beach walk as the sun goes down. Stretching all along the foreshore of Bribie the Moreton Bay Regional Council has installed a great variety of fitness equipment for you to use. These are a great way to stay active while enjoying your beautiful surroundings. On the eastern side of the island is where you will find Ocean Beach. The Bribie Island Surf Lifesaving Club has been patrolling this beach for 87 years and continues to keep us safe. The club is a huge part of the Bribie community and the work that the club, and all their volunteers do for Bribie, is very much appreciated by everyone who visits here. If you go north from the patrolled section of the beach you will be able to see some World War II buildings that were used to defend Queensland’s coastline. Erosion has altered their positions from when they stood originally as they used to be behind the sand dunes, now some can be seen from the beach.

ABOUT BRIBIE. Bribie also offers a variety of clubs and organisations on the island which cover pursuits for all ages and interests. We enjoy the perfect weather for a game of golf most of the year round. We are well catered for on Bribie with Pacific Harbour Golf Club at Banksia Beach and Bribie Island Golf Club at Woorim offering top class facilities and amenities for members and visitors. They both have well stocked golf shops with professional staff on hand to make your golfing experience one to remember. Both clubs welcome visitors for a round of golf or to enjoy their restaurant and dining facilities. Lawn bowls on Bribie Island is one of the oldest running sports here as the Bribie Island Bowls Club on Welsby Parade was the first club to open in the 1930s and still operates today from the same location. The lawn bowls clubs on the island all offer full amenities with restaurants and coffee shops within their clubs so you can visit them for a game or just to socialise. The Bribie Island Bowls Club is on Welsby Parade, the Bongaree Bowls Club is located at the Bribie Sports Club on Toorbul Street and the Solander Lake Bowls Club is on Sunderland Drive, Banksia Beach. Another spot to enjoy this popular game is the Indoor Bowls Club which is on First Avenue, look out for signs near the sports grounds. The Bribie Island RSL Club on Toorbul Street, Bongaree has been operating since 1977 and offers entertainment, kids club and a choice of dining options. The Bribie Island Surf Club at Woorim now has access to the club for wheelchairs and prams with the installation of a lift to their building. Bribie offers an excellent choice of local clubs and groups. They include music, singing, touring, public speaking, gardening, environment, gems, woodwork, history, art, computing and sports. Check out our full list of clubs on the island at ‘Club Scene’ at the back of this magazine. An interesting way to learn about history on Bribie is by visiting the ‘talking monuments’ on the island. There are three located in different areas. One at the end of Solander Esplanade at Banksia Beach, it talks about the landing of Matthew Flinders on Bribie Island. Next to the Volunteer Marine Rescue building at Bellara you will hear some general history of the island and at the Community Arts Centre on Sunderland Drive the history of the aboriginals on the island is retold. Water activities remain popular so if you have your boat you can choose the perfect spot for launching it. Spinnaker Marina (before the bridge) is great as a sheltered option for launching. Boat ramps on Bribie Island are located on Marine Parade, Bellara, turn left after crossing the

bridge. Along Welsby Parade, opposite the Bongaree Caravan Park and there is a sand ramp on Solander Esplanade, Banksia Beach. This ramp is suitable for small boats, preferably with a 4WD. Toorbul and Donnybrook also have good facilities for launching your boat. Wildlife on Bribie is varied and interesting, birdlife abounds at Kakadu Bird Roost and Buckley’s Hole Environmental Park. Visit these areas to see the migrating birds that travel from Siberia to feed here in the summer months and rest in our mangroves and wetlands. The majestic black swans can be seen on the passage in all different areas of Bribie. The pelicans are always a favourite, very easy to spot and just watch them when they think a fisherman is about to get rid of some fish scraps, they suddenly become very friendly. In the water the most common animals spotted are dolphins, dugongs and turtles. The dugongs and turtles are usually quick to duck back down under the water but the dolphins sometimes put on a great show. If you are lucky enough to be travelling up the passage towards Caloundra you may also see our resident brumbys (wild horses) on the beach. There is quite a few living at the northern end of the island but they are not often spotted so keep your eyes open for them. It is a pretty magical sight when you see the wild brumbys grazing beside the beach, you wouldn’t see that it many other places. So next time you are looking for a relaxing break or a fun filled holiday come and visit us here on Bribie and check out some different activities and places to go, you’re sure to find something to suit your visit.

You can enter from the end of White Patch Esplanade at Banksia Beach and take the inland track or the Eighth Ave carpark, North St, Woorim and drive along Ocean Beach. Always check conditions of the inland track and beach before attempting them as conditions change regularly. The inland track has long sections of very soft sand which are harder to drive in when it is very dry. When driving on Ocean Beach the conditions can change after rain with the lagoons overflowing creating creeks across the beach and deep drop offs into them. Before taking your vehicle onto the beach, make sure you are familiar with sand-driving techniques such as lowering tyre pressure and have appropriate equipment. On-the-spot fines apply for driving vehicles past this point.

TIPS FOR A SAFE VISIT

FISHING AND BOATING

Pumicestone Passage’s extensive tidal wetlands are essential breeding areas for many fish, crabs and prawns. During winter the passage between Bells Creek and Caloundra Bar is one of south-east Queensland’s principal spawning areas for yellowfin bream. Flathead, bream, whiting, tailor and mangrove jack are often caught around Bribie Island. Many people catch sand and mud crabs during the summer months. The passage is part of the Moreton Bay Marine Park. Recreational fishing activities are permitted in the marine park, except in the Tripcony Bight – Long Island and Westaways Creek marine national park zones. When boating, observe the Go Slow areas and go slowly over seagrass beds as dugongs feed here.

G’DAY ADVENTURE TOURS Bribie Island’s newest tourism venture G’day Adventure Tours, owned and operated by longstanding local Jason Brown, has proven to be just what the Island needs to showcase not only its’ incredible natural beauty, but the abundance of fascinating history as well. Mr Brown said, “I created these tours because I wanted to show people the amazing areas of the island I grew up on that many people have never been to or even know about. I would like to see Bribie as a tourist hub for families and younger people, with much more entertainment and activities available than when I grew up here”. G’day Adventure Tours runs a variety of expeditions, depending on how much of the island you wish to explore. The most popular tour starts by driving along the beach to Norfolk lagoon (known by the locals as second lagoon). This is where kayaks are unloaded for a water tour, before heading to the WWII Bunkers (also known as fort Bribie). Mr Brown adds, “You’d be amazed by the history of these great forts that were built in the 1940’s. The story of this area is a really cool historical part of Bribie. In my opinion you can’t call yourself a local, if you’ve not been to these parts of the island”. Life is meant to be an exciting adventure, filled with memorable experiences ... add to your story today! PERSONALISED BUSINESS COACHING & SOLUTIONS After spending more than 30 years in senior management working for large corporations, Lynn Cook decided to follow her dream of making working life better and started her own business. Having an MBA majoring with distinctions in OHS as well as Diplomas in Management, Lynn enjoys the legislation and legal referencing required in the industry she chose to open a business in. This saw Personalised Business Coaching (PBC&S) registered in 2005, and grow to service clients across all of Australia and NZ in 2010. The mere fact that a business is able to have their own specialist on a “pay for usage” terms is favourable not only for the employer or business owner but also for the safety of the employees. The initial offering of the business was (and still is) workplace health and safety consulting, governance, and third-party external workplace audits. Two years later, she pursued lead auditor qualifications as she believed she had the skills to be an effective auditor—unlike some of the auditors she had been exposed to in her corporate life. “My main reason for following the compliance trail was that an auditor has the unique ability to take a ‘snap shot’ and rate the health of the

18

business by looking deep into the engine room on a specific day”. “Our profession gets to have a private and unique experience with business owners and really do become part of the “working team”. “We are able to carry out an unemotional dissection of a business, which the owners or decision makers are sometimes too connected to for realistic actions to be set down.” A good compliant professional can also be a change manager— assisting the business owners and stake holders to understand what they require against what they have in place and aiding with corrective actions showing their governance or due diligence. Lynn is very vocal to ensure that her clients and any people she advises that they have a good understanding of what is required (vocationally and through work experience) in the role that they engage an external provider for. Whether it is an ad hoc one off visit, or a long term working relationship you must always ask for credentials and proof of qualifications. Many a business has been “caught out” by gaining advice by inexperienced or unqualified consultants. This goes with any advice, not just that which Lynn’s business offers. Even when I have to go to site and undertake a construction Audit, which I am accredited for from WHSQ Construction Unit for Government Spending, I still ensure my I.D is clearly visible and the transparency of my actions are front and centre. Lynn’s mission statement for all her clients is that “I will give you peace of mind knowing the business owner has someone watching their back keeping them up to date with changes to legislation going a long way enabling them to show due diligence should they be required to, outsourcing the role to focused professionals. Our clients sleep well at night!”

With constant competition, cinemas must keep up with the ever improving technology which it must now adopt to survive. The biggest change to cinema over the last decade has been the transition from 35mm film to digital. This has improved the picture quality, sound and 3D movies. In late 2009 Bribie Island was introduced to the latest in digital cinema technology, with the previous owners knowing they had to make the very expensive investment to keep the doors open. The film distributors were no longer producing 35mm film, instead delivering their movies on a computer hard drive or what is known as a DCP (Digital Cinema Package). Why are more people opting to go the movies with so much other content available? Well, cinemas have been able to keep up with their competitors. We have improved the picture, made it bigger in some cases, updated the seating and the sound, offered more options at the Candy Bar and reduced ticket prices in some locations. This is just a small percentage of what we and many other cinemas have done to bring people back to the magic of the big screen. We’re lucky in the 21st century to have so many movies being released each week. Not long ago we were lucky to get 1 or 2 new movies each week. Now, we have at least 6 or 7 hitting the screen every Thursday! With new technology we’re able to provide a bigger range of product and really cater for all ages. Before I purchased Bribie Cinema I knew that it had a lot of potential. Since taking over I have been busy improving what was left behind by the previous owners. New paint has been splashed around, both inside and out, new signage has been erected, all new surround sound has been installed, the projectors have had a good service, the bathrooms have been renovated and cinema 2 has been completely refurbished with now more leg room, new flooring and even leather recliners for the front row. Don’t worry, its big brother, cinema 1 will be fully refurbished in early 2017 with all new flooring and brand new seats being installed. As we continue to improve the comfort of our cinemas, we are also making it easier and quicker to purchase tickets! With our new website & new terminals we are able to offer the purchase of tickets ONLINE! No longer do you need to worry if there will be seats left for your favourite movie, days before just jump on our website (www.bribiemovies.com. au) or download our mobile app to see when your movie is screening and book your tickets then & there! With your support we can continue to bring the latest Hollywood and home grown blockbusters to the big screen on Bribie Island. Written by Luke Warburton (owner of Bribie Island Cinema)

FREEHOLD RETIREMENT FREEDOM – NEW HOMES NEARLY SOLD OUT! Award-winning retirement community developer Parker Property Groups ‘Pebble Beach’s freehold retirement homes have proven so popular as an alternative to the regular and costly leasehold retirement options, the development is in its final stages and nearly sold out! Pebble Beach is an example of a rare but very popular independent living freehold retirement community in that residents own their homes outright and have all the rights of freehold home owners. Sales Manager Elaine Quinn said owners still enjoyed the security and community atmosphere of a retirement village. “In this way Pebble Beach has been designed to bridge the gap between full service retirement living and owning your own home,” she said. “And while it might not provide all the bells and whistles of some other options, that is exactly what the developer intended and is just how the residents like it as the proximity to an abundance of services, clubs and facilities on the Island allows residents to pick and choose without being burdened with the ongoing management costs associated with on-site facilities they may not even use.” Mrs Quinn said this meant reduced body corporate fees for residents (currently under $40 per week), no exit fees and residents retain all capital gains. The Pebble Beach Retirement Community is located at Sandstone Point, the launch point to Bribie Island on the Sunshine Coast. “The community enjoys pole position in relation to transport links, local clubs and services and an abundance of natural beauty and recreational opportunities provided by neighbouring nature reserves, fishing spots and sheltered waterways and everything there is to love and enjoy about the Bribie Island area.”

OUR COMMUNITY.

DRAGONS ABREAST BRIBIE ISLAND Even in our small community of Bribie Island and surrounding districts, breast cancer has spread its ugly claws to claim many victims. Sadly some of these victims have lost the battle but the majority have survived the trauma of diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation to lead normal healthy lives. Many of these survivors have experienced the benefits of belonging to Dragons Abreast Bribie Island (DABI). After treatment, transition back into a full and active life is often difficult. Women who have had breast cancer can often feel isolated and in need of support from other women who have experienced the emotional and physical effects of cancer. The Dragons Abreast movement was founded by Michelle Hanton in the Northern Territory in 1998 to promote ‘Life after Breast Cancer’. There are now approximately 34 clubs throughout Australia. DABI was formed in 2008. Dragons Abreast provides opportunity, through the sport of dragon boating, for rehabilitation after surgery, fitness, emotional support and best of all, wonderful camaraderie. DABI welcomes anyone in our area who has had a breast cancer diagnosis regardless of gender, age, shape, fitness level or sporting experience. Dragons Abreast is based on participation and inclusiveness in a supportive environment where those travelling the breast cancer journey gradually develop their fitness levels through taking part in this ancient Chinese sport. The club is highly effective in promoting the message of breast cancer awareness and education through the fun of dragon boat racing. Although we do sometimes compete in dragon boat regattas our focus is not on winning but on having fun. We consider ourselves winners already, having survived and beaten breast cancer. We now have 52 members and they have all reaped the rewards from being part of this group. We paddle three times a week on our beautiful Pumicestone Passage and are often joined by dolphins, turtles, pelicans and the occasional dugong. Originally we had just one dragon boat, a 20 seater named ‘Spirit of Bribie’, but have now added a 10 seater, ‘Little Spirit’, to accommodate the large growth in membership over the last 2 years. Many DABI members have travelled together both nationally and internationally (at their own expense) to regatta events, seeing new places and forging lasting friendships. Our members range in age from 51 to 93 and you won’t believe the fun and friendship they experience while out in the dragon boat.

RADIO 101.5FM – YOUR LOCAL LIFELINE IN ANY EMERGENCY Over the past 27 years, local radio station 101.5FM has become the main source of daily news and information for residents and holidaymakers on Bribie Island and surrounding areas. It broadcasts 24/7 from its studios in the main town square of Caboolture to a potential audience of almost 200,000 listeners within the local region. With strong support from business and the wider community, programs focus very much on local news, happenings and events. Each morning, boaties on Bribie can tune in for the latest weather conditions predicted for the Passage and the deeper and more unpredictable waters of Moreton Bay. Reports cover predicted swells, wind shifts and even include updates on what and where fish are biting, all supplied by Bribie’s local fishing experts. For those less fortunate residents heading to work, regular peak hour traffic reports are provided daily throughout the breakfast program and afternoon “Drive” with updated reports on any traffic snarls or accidents on the roads. These include the key arterials including the Bruce Highway, Bribie Road, Morayfield Road and the Gateway for those heading to the airport and Gold Coast. These regular reports also include any delays to train and bus services. Radio station 101.5fm is perhaps best known as a potential life-line for local residents when the inevitable emergency or natural disaster occurs such as cyclones, fires and floods. During any such emergency, the latest information from the Weather Bureau, Regional Council and emergency services, including the police, fire services and the SES is broadcast throughout the day and night with specially trained personnel at the station collating and disseminating information and advice to listeners. The focus is always on the local situation within the Moreton Bay Regional Council area that does not always receive adequate coverage from Brisbane based radio stations. Local residents are also encouraged to contact the station with their own updated information that can be passed on to other listeners. In times of major emergencies, Council and disaster management crews are offered direct access to the station’s main studios to broadcast directly to residents. This is particularly important should the need arise for evacuations. It is imperative in any natural disaster or emergency that households always have a torch and battery operated radio handy because of potential power failures.

RARE FINDS AT YOUR LOCAL OP SHOP For anyone who has not yet discovered the delights of Op Shopping, Bribie Island is the ideal place to begin. With nine Opportunity Shops located within a few minutes’ drive of each other, one day is all that’s needed to experience the joy of guilt-free shopping. Op Shops are quirky, unpredictable places, stuffed with nick-nacks, toys, collectibles, jewellery, kitchen tools, linen and a diverse range of clothing. These are the places to find a warm, beaten up jacket to wear when night fishing, or conversation-starter souvenir T-shirts from places we’ll never visit. Track down the best clothes for that 1960s party, the mother-of-the bride frock or the formal suit for a friend’s wedding. A search might uncover a rare, two cup thermos flask for a picnic, bone china tea sets for a High Tea, a posh hat for the Garden Party, costume jewellery to give a lift to last year’s outfit, or a pair of jeans to replace the pair chewed up by the dog. Those “new” jeans will be hanging on a rack in an Op Shop, among the hipster, the stretch, the straight leg and the very expensive style that looks like it was towed down the main street behind the ute. This pair will cost less than $5 and, on sales days, may only cost $1.50. They definitely won’t shrink. On a rainy day take the whole family to join in the fun of the hunt. There will be something of interest for grandma, the bub, and everyone in between. Keep the kids occupied by handing over $5 each and challenging them to find the best buy on the Op Shop Trail. Revealing everyone’s spoils at the end of the day will add to the fun and guarantee a laugh. Then the board games, puzzles, books, music CDs and movies will be put to use to justify the $20 spent on the entire haul.

Next month these treasures can be donated back to the Op Shop, and a new hunt can launched. Plan the day well. Take cash in small denominations. Start early at Lifeline Bellara near Bribie Island bridge, motor on to The Neighbourhood Centre, then along to Animal Welfare. After a snack head down Cotterill Avenue to Busy Fingers, where ample time will be needed for browsing, then nip around to Church of Christ shop before they close at midday Bongaree has many options for lunch, to be enjoyed near the jetty, then stop in at Hospice Op Shop in First Avenue. Stay on First Ave and drive towards Woorim, stopping along the way at the Mercy Shop. There are two more op shops in Woorim to visit, Lifeline and Vinnies. Then it’s time for an icecream before heading home. The day’s bonus is the outstanding contribution these purchased treasures made to local charities, which support an astonishing number of local community organisations and needs. Well done.

OUT & ABOUT.

DID YOU KNOW THAT BRIBIE ISLAND IS HOME TO AT LEAST 14 SECRETS STASHES OF TREASURE?! No, these are not long lost chests of gold hidden by pirates of old. They are geocaches! Geocaches are waterproof containers that have been hidden and recorded online, for others to find. They range in size anywhere between a fake, hollow bolt to a hefty ammunition box. Geocaching is a GPS treasure hunt – and a great way to explore some interesting parts of Bribie Island. The first placement of a geocache took place on May 3, 2000, in USA, at 45°17.460′N 122°24.800′W. Since then it has grown into a game shared across the world, involving people of all ages. Geocaching is a great hobby for families to enjoy together. There are nearly 3 million caches worldwide. Bribie Island has some of the earliest geocaches ever done in Queensland.

Trackables are trinkets that are purchased from official geocaching websites and moved from geocache to geocache by anyone who wants to participate, the only requirement being that you log the retrieval of the trackable on the website to help build a narrative of the trackable’s travels. Geocaching can be quite simple: 1. Download the app. Geocaching by Groundspeak is the most popular. 2. Sign up with a username and password 3. Use the app to suss out where caches are in your area, see them on a map, and read all about them in their description. 4. Hunt them down! Use the map to narrow your search (Iphone GPSs can be out by up to 10 metres, though will often lead you right to the correct spot). Read the description carefully, use the hint offered, and even scan recent logs and look at photos taken by past cachers to hone in on GZ(ground zero). You may have to reach or climb, get down on your belly, and keep an eye out for anything NQR{not quite right}. 6. Log your find in the app. Any found caches will now appear on your map as a smiley face. If you feel maintenance is needed, ie: logbook is full, container is no longer waterproof, or the cache or part of it is missing, you can log a field note to inform the cache’s owner. Tips

Some of Bribie island’s geocache treasures are located at our most interesting historical sites, including our WWII bunkers at Woorim and the abandoned saltwater aquarium at Red Beach. Others are hidden in Bribie’s most beautiful places, and let’s face it – there are lots of beautiful places on Bribie!

• Always carry a pen. • Have a fully charged phone/gps • Wear shoes than can handle getting grubby • Take insect repellent • Keep an eye out for snakes, spiders, and cane toads

Every cache has a logbook and, depending on its size, may house: a pen, a geocaching explanation, and/or swappables/trackables Swappables are small trinkets, generally not of any real value. You should always leave a trinket as a replacement if you plan on taking one for yourself.

• Don’t risk your life at cliffs etc • Keep an eye out for ‘muggles’ (people uninitiated into the wonders of geocaching) Lastly – don’t forget to stop, have a look at the fantastic environment around you and remember to appreciate the wonders of Bribie Island!

HISTORY OF BRIBIE.

The long life of a sailor comes to an end... – A REMINISCENCE OF BRIBIE ISLAND IN WW2 (BY HISTORIAN RON DONALD)

The last remaining military link with Bribie Island in World War 2 has been severed with the death of former naval lieutenant and wartime Darwin bombing survivor Frederick Sydney Sharp on June 9 at the age of 99 years.

Syd Sharp, as he became popularly known in adult life, was born into a family living on the Parramatta River and it was only natural that his main sporting activities would soon become swimming, sailing and rowing, with the waters of Sydney Harbour an irresistible magnet.

But his experiences in the long service of his country remain for posterity through his detailed written reminiscences of some of the most critical episodes in Australia’s wartime history.

There were ominous beginnings to his life – at the age of only four years he contracted typhoid fever and spent three months in the isolation ward of a private hospital in Ashfield, Sydney.

Lieut, Syd Sharp, as the youthful officer-in-charge of RAN No. 4 indicator loop station at Woorim on the east coast of Bribie Island. He was also a highly responsible officer in the wartime Brisbane seaward defences structure. Although now protected by sandbagging, the station was seriously threatened by beach erosion several years ago and is still intact, as are its two diesel electric power huts a little further inland.

The illness was cured and he became a student at Sydney Grammar, joining the school cadets and leaving in 1934 at the age of 17 to take a job in the insurance industry. Subsequently he joined the peacetime Militia (Army) – becoming a sergeant - but the call of the sea was insistent and he transferred to the Royal Australian Navy Volunteer Reserve in February, 1939 – the same year in which Britain and Germany became adversaries in World War 2. Newly-married, Syd was mobilised in the naval reserve in December, 1939, being stationed at the port war signal station and anti-submarine unit at South Head, Sydney. His training included an ASDIC (anti-submarine detection) course with service in a submarine being part of the regime which was to stand him in good stead at Bribie Island and Moreton Bay later in the war.

Still standing is the old control post of the wartime RAN No. 4 station at Woorim. The building was manned around the clock and, with equipment connected to an under-sea electrical cable, was able to detect any enemy submarine activity in Moreton Bay. Since this photograph was taken, about 20 years ago, beach erosion has removed the foredunes to within only a few metres of the building. 32

HISTORY OF BRIBIE.

Above and Right: Today, the RAN No. 4 station at Woorim As a RANVR sub-lieutenant, he was posted to Darwin to serve in the northern capital’s port war signal and loop station, arriving there on February 10, 1941. His duties included reconnaissance flights, as naval observer, in Allied aircraft seeking to monitor possible Japanese military activity to the north. The Japanese began to strafe and bomb Darwin and its defence installations on February 19, 1942, and Syd Sharp survived a total of 26 devastating air raids before being posted south, hitching a ride to Sydney in a US Air Force Flying Fortresss. In late 1942, he was appointed to command the newly-established RAN No. 4 indicator loop station close to the eastern beach of Bribie Island, near the township of Woorim. No. 4 was the senior RAN establishment – the others were No. 2 (northern Bribie Island), port war signal station at Caloundra and RAN No. 3 at Tangalooma. Built of concrete, No. 4 had seven rooms and, aided by electrically-operated cables on the seabed, was equipped to monitor all shipping movements in and out of Moreton Bay. Any enemy ships, including submarines, would run the risk of being blown up by suspended mines in the bay while four six-inch (155mm) artillery guns on Bribie’s ocean beach would be an added deterrent. No. 4 station had a crew of about 35, including Royal Navy seamen who had survived battles against German ships in the European theatre of the war.

A modest and gentlemanly person, he was proud of his service medals and of being able to participate on foot each year in the Anzac Day march in Sydney until the time when very few WW2 naval veterans were still alive. Lieut. Syd Sharp is survived by Linda, his wife of the past 39 years, and three daughters (Rosemary, Suzanne and Alison) from his first marriage, as well as their families. He and Linda had lived at Runaway Bay on the Gold Coast for the past 28 years. His funeral service was held with naval honours in Somerville Chapel at Nerang Cemetery on the Gold Coast on June 17, 2016. An additional – and rare – tribute was the sending of a signal from RAN headquarters to all serving ships and shore installations, acknowledging Lieut. Sharp’s service to his country over a period of four decades. He had requested that his ashes be scattered at sea from a serving RAN ship.

At times, Lieut. Sharp acted in his capacity as RAN deputy extended defences officer for Moreton Bay – a highly-responsible position considering that the North-West passage of the bay was the main route to and from the port of Brisbane for convoys of Allied shipping. With the Japanese retreating in the islands north of Australia, the RAN installations in Moreton Bay were closed in 1944 and Syd Sharp was posted first to Darwin and then to Cairns for his final duties in WW2. Always a keen yachtsman, he became a member (ultimately commodore) of the Royal Australian Navy Sailing Association and, as either skipper or crew member, took part in ocean races between Sydney Harbour and Noumea. These achievements earned him membership of the London-based Ocean Cruising Club.

Proudly wearing his naval service medals, Syd Sharp regarded the annual Anzac Day observations in Sydney as a ‘must’ to attend - so much so that in 1995, at the age of 95, he was the oldest in the navy contingent and opted to complete the march on foot!

In 1980, he sold his insurance brokerage business and retired while still owning a cruising yacht for leisurely trips to Fiji and other destinations. ★ www.bribie.com.au ★

EMBRACING ART & CULTURE.

THE FIRST BRIBIE PRINTMAKERS Formed in 2013, the First Bribie Printmakers is an innovative group of artists who share a love of experimentation. Printmaking is a flexible art form that encompasses textures, patterns and fluid designs. Their techniques are many, including linocuts, collagraphs, silk screen printing, stamping and dry point etching. In exploring the magic of printmaking, Bribie Printmakers celebrate individual styles. They describe their creative process as an exciting journey of discovery, where chance and serendipity meet, through a combination of artistic vision and skills. The group is proud to own a block printing and etching press than can print up to A1 size (900 x 600 mm). All members of the group make a small contribution to help cover costs associated with the hiring of galleries and other group-related expenses. The Printmakers produce a cornucopia of colour and technique for their popular annual exhibition in the Matthew Flinders Gallery at Bribie Island Community Arts Centre. They meet at the Arts Centre every Friday at noon and new members are always welcomed. Newcomers are invited to attend for three weeks before committing to the group and becoming BICAS members. Deidre Nelson and Joyce Newell are the Printmakers contacts: – Deidre on 3410 0568, mobile 0423 472 726 or email deidren@icloud.com. – Joyce is on 3408 7743, mobile 0439 329 334 or email Joyce.Newell@bigpond.com

CONTEMPORARY ART PRACTICES If you want to see adventurous artists at play, drop in any Tuesday morning at Studio 2 at The Bribie Island Community Arts Centre. There you will meet an intrepid and imaginative group whose priorities are to learn from each other, share knowledge and above all, have fun. This Working Together Group is enthusiastic, creative and inventive and boasts over 20 members. They produce creative, unique works exploring different styles of painting as well as unusual and varied mediums and techniques. Members work toward unblocking the barriers to image-making by riding the creative flow. With no attachment to the outcomes of their creations, they are free to create in the moment. This involves lots of play and happenstance, using contemporary imagery via exploration of and experimentation with media, processes and techniques. A multi-coloured, Ride-On Mower in the 2016 Contemporary Arts Exhibition, Eclectica epitomises the clever and ingenious nature of this genre. This functional, fun piece was snapped up by the Caboolture Historical Village and ridden into their Antique Machinery Restoration Museum. The BICAS Contemporary Arts Practices group love to challenge themselves as they continue, with open minds, on their collaborative and joyful art journey. Contemporary Art Practices have an annual Exhibition and also exhibit in the Working Together Groups Showcase in the Matthew Flinders Gallery. Contact Jude Pullin, on 5429 0416 or visit the BICAS website http://www.bribieartscentre.com.au/ for more detail.
