Garlic & Prawn Pasta Ingredients

340 grams spaghetti 3 tablespoons butter 3 cloves garlic, minced 500 grams medium prawns, peeled and de-veined 1 cup of dry white wine Juice of 2 lemons Zest of 1 lemon 1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes Kosher salt Freshly ground black pepper Fresh parsley to garnish Method In a large pot of salted boiling water, cook spaghetti according to package directions until al dente. Drain pasta, reserving 1/2 cup pasta water and return pasta to pot. Meanwhile, in a large skillet over medium heat melt the butter. Then add garlic and cook until fragrant for approximately a minute. Add prawns to the pan and cook until pink for approximately 3 minutes. Then add wine, lemon juice, lemon zest and red pepper flakes. Season with salt and pepper. Add spaghetti and toss to coat, adding reserved pasta water 1 tablespoon at a time until saucy. Garnish with parsley before serving. Ocean Beach Bribie Island Recreation Area has a great variety of coastal camping experiences for the avid fisherman or family groups. Some areas within the park are accessible only by boat and others only by four-wheeldrive. Wherever you go on the island, away from town areas, you need to carry fresh water and be self-sufficient. Vehicle access permits and camping permits apply. Please see the information on the following page for details about these permits. The best all round tyre pressure for sand driving is 16 psi. By letting your tyres down to 16psi you significantly increase the size of the tyres footprint on the sand so you have the same weight of vehicle spread over about twice as much rubber and therefore half the weight per square inch.

CAMPING AREAS ACCESSIBLE BY FOUR WHEEL DRIVE Gallagher’s Point Gallagher’s Point has a limited number of bush camping sites. This campground is on the western side of the island, with views over the Pumicestone Passage towards the Glasshouse Mountains and Toorbul. There are no toilets and fresh water is not provided so bring your own supply. Poverty Creek Poverty Creek is located on the western side of the island and has open grassy sites and shady trees. The adjoining picnic area overlooks the Pumicestone Passage and has views to the Glasshouse Mountains and Donnybrook. It has sites for camper trailers and groups. Toilets, picnic tables and fireplaces are provided in half of the area. Fires and heat beads are prohibited in the camper trailer and group camping area, bring a fuel stove. Fires for cooking, only in fireplaces provided. Bring your own clean firewood, it is illegal to collect firewood on the island and remember to bring your own supply of fresh water. Ocean Beach Ocean Beach camping area is on the eastern beach of Bribie Island. It has designated areas starting 16km north of the beach access on North St, Woorim. Campsites are behind the dunes and are accessible from defined track entrances. Toilet facilities are provided at the camping area accessed by track P. Please use these facilities or bring your own portable enclosed toilet system. Preferably bring a fuel stove. Fires and heat beads are not permitted on the beach or in the camping area. Fresh water is not provided remember to bring your own supply of fresh water.

CAMPING ON BRIBIE. CAMPING AREAS ACCESSIBLE BY BOAT Boats can be launched on the island at Bongaree, Bellara and Banksia Beach (sand ramp only) and on the mainland at Sandstone Point, Toorbul and Donnybrook boat ramps. Mission Point Mission Point has relatively protected anchorages for boats in front of each campsite. On the western side of Bribie Island the campsites overlook the Pumicestone Passage with views to the Glasshouse Mountains. The campgrounds have recently been upgraded with water now connected to the toilets and new picnic tables and fireplaces installed on all sites. Fires for cooking are allowed only in the fireplaces provided. Bring your own clean firewood, it is illegal to collect firewood on the island. Bring your own supply of fresh water. Lime Pocket Lime Pocket has two bush camping sites and is on the western side of the island overlooking the Pumicestone Passage and Glasshouse Mountains. Fires for cooking, only in fireplaces provided. Bring your own clean firewood and supplies of fresh water. No toilet facilities so please bring your own portable enclosed toilet system.

Remember to pick up your permits Before taking your vehicle onto the beach, make sure you are familiar with sand-driving techniques and have appropriate equipment. To protect Bribie Island’s fragile, narrow spit, vehicle traffic is not permitted beyond the World War II northern searchlight emplacement. On-the-spot fines apply for driving vehicles past this point. The only place to purchase your 4wd and camping permits is www.qld.gov.au/camping and select 'Bribie Island Recreation Area' or phone 13 74 68. TIPS FOR A SAFE VISIT • Take care when driving in sand • Watch for wild life • W atch the tides! On Ocean Beach, travel as close as possible to low tide, as this is when beach driving conditions are safest • Avoid driving during the two hours either side of high tide • Bring enough fresh water as water is not available at any camping or picnic areas

There are a lot of national park camping destinations for you to choose from when you are camping on Bribie Island 4WD ACCESS Vehicles travelling through the recreation area must be road-registered 4WDs. A vehicle access permit must be purchased and displayed on your vehicle windscreen before driving in the recreation area. You can enter from the end of White Patch Esplanade at Banksia Beach or the Eighth Ave carpark, North St, Woorim. Beach driving conditions can be unpredictable. During heavy periods of rain, the lagoons overflow, creating creeks across the beach - at times the drop off into these creeks can be deep.

• Always watch for 4WDs when you are on the beach • Take care when swimming, the beaches are not patrolled • Use fireplaces provided; put fires out with water (not sand) LOOKING AFTER OUR PARK • Take your rubbish with you when you leave • Don’t use shampoos and soaps in or near waterways • In areas where toilets are not provided, bring a portable enclosed toilet • When driving, stay on tracks and off the dunes

Pumicestone Passage’s extensive tidal wetlands are essential breeding areas for many fish, crabs and prawns. During winter the passage between Bells Creek and Caloundra Bar is one of south-east Queensland’s principal spawning areas for yellowfin bream. Flathead, bream, whiting, tailor and mangrove jack are often caught around Bribie Island.

• Dark blotches on the back and sides set aside adult trumpeter whiting from sand, goldline and northern whiting.

Many people catch sand and mud crabs during the summer months. The passage is part of the Moreton Bay Marine Park. Recreational fishing activities are permitted in the marine park, except in the Tripcony Bight – Long Island and Westaways Creek marine national park zones.

•B arred javelin unlike silver javelin has vertical bars along their flanks. These bars are comprised of spots and blotches. Javelin also ‘grunt’ when caught, hence the common name ‘grunter bream’.

Fisheries Queensland is asking Bribie Island visitors and residents to polish up on fish identification before they cast a line. They find that misidentification of fish was common for species such as flathead, whiting, javelin, snapper and bream. “All these fish have rules about how many you can catch and keep,” say Fisheries Queensland, “if you catch a fish and aren’t sure what species it is, you might unknowingly be doing the wrong thing. There

• Silver javelin and barred javelin can often be mistaken for pikey bream. Look out for silver javelin which has numerous scattered dark brown to black blotches on the body and dark blotches on the dorsal fins.

• Bream are completely silver in colour and have no blotches or spots. Bream have a forked tail unlike javelin. Yellowfin bream have yellowwhite anal and pelvic fins. • Juvenile snapper, known as ’squire’, can be mistaken for bream. The upper bodies of snapper vary from pale pink to reddish mostly with bluish spots. Check the latest rules online at www.deedi.qld.gov.au and go to Fisheries.

THE BRIBIE CHAMBER The Bribie Island Chamber of Commerce is a not-for-profit organisation run by a volunteer committee. Broadcasting 24/7 from its studios in the Caboolture town square to a potential audience of almost 500,000 listeners within the local region. With strong support from business and the wider community, programs focus very much on local news, happenings and events. Each morning, boaties on Bribie can tune in for the latest weather conditions predicted for the Passage and the deeper and more unpredictable waters of Moreton Bay. For those less fortunate residents heading to work, regular peak hour traffic reports are provided daily throughout the breakfast program and afternoon 'Drive' with updated reports on any traffic snarls or accidents on the roads. These include the key arterials including the Bruce Highway, Bribie Island Road, Morayfield Road and the Gateway for those heading to the airport and Gold Coast. These regular reports also include any delays to train and bus services. Your radio 101.5fm is best known as the life-line for local residents when the inevitable emergency or natural disaster occurs such as cyclones, fires and floods. During any such emergency, the latest information from the Weather Bureau, Regional Council and emergency services, including the police, fire services and the SES is broadcast throughout the day and night with specially trained personnel at the station collating and disseminating information and advice to listeners.

The focus is always on the local situation within the Moreton Bay Regional Council area that does not always receive adequate coverage from Brisbane based radio stations. Local residents are also encouraged to contact the station with their own updated information that can be passed on to other listeners. In times of major emergencies, Council and disaster management crews are offered direct access to the station’s main studios to broadcast directly to residents. WHY WE LOVE THE WATERS OF BRIBIE ISLAND From the beautiful ocean-side beach of Woorim, around the tip of Red Beach and north through the Pumicestone Passage, Bribie Island is all about water. This charming sand island is surrounded by the Moreton Bay Marine Park, home to some of the most fascinating sea animals in the world. Bribie Island also hosts plenty of opportunities for fun and relaxation – in, on or near the water. Woorim has the closest surf beach north of Brisbane and is patrolled by lifesavers in the summer months. Obtaining a permit allows fourwheel drive travel several kilometres north from Woorim along the sand, which stretches up to the tip of Bribie Island, overlooking Caloundra. Along the way, check out the gun-emplacement bunkers that operated as Brisbane’s defence against invasion in WW2. Simply lounging on the ocean beach affords views of Moreton Island and the sand blows of Tangalooma. Not many minutes will go by before you see a container ship navigating the shipping channel that runs the length of the island and into the Port of Brisbane through Moreton Bay. Perhaps a pleasure boat will cruise past on its way to watch the humpback whales during their migration from the Antarctic summer feeding grounds to breed in the sheltered waters of the Barrier Reef. Closer in, you may be lucky enough to spot dolphins frolicking beyond the surf. South of the surf club, the beach curves around Skirmish Point. Some say it was here that Matthew Flinders and his friend Bongaree first met Bribie’s Aboriginal people, but it is more rightly held to be the point where Flinders’ vessel, the “Norfolk”, anchored. From there the crew took a row-boat around Red Beach and into the Pumicesone Passage where an interesting visit took place on the shore where the village of Bongaree now sits. Buckley’s Hole Environmental Park is an artificial freshwater lake near South Point, which can be reached via the beach or along a track from the Boulevard. A quiet wait in the bird hide will usually be rewarded by sightings of local and visiting shorebirds – spoonbills and kites, honeyeaters and moorhens. Over 190 species of birds enjoy the sanctuary of Buckley’s Hole. Every trip to Bribie Island is blessed by the pelicans that grace our waters.

Who doesn’t love to count them, sitting high on the lamp posts, as we cross the bridge? The pelican’s clumsy gait and comical bill streamline into beauty when in flight. Pelicans breed inland and only venture to the coast when almost fully grown. North of the bridge, Pumicestone Passage extends about 30 kilometres to Caloundra. This magical place is a must for visitors to Bribie Island. Whether beside it or on it, you cannot fail to be impressed by the views the Passage affords. You can take a motor-boat up the channel, sail, kayak, or go on a cruise – all opportunities to take pleasure in one of the most picturesque bodies of water in Queensland. Fishing is great fun and the variety is huge - flathead in the creeks, whiting on the sandbars, snapper under the bridge. Some say that keeping the fish ruins a good day’s fishing! Being on the water gives you the best chance of spotting dolphins and sea-turtles. Both bottle-nose and Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins are common in Pumicestone Passage, often seen in groups, sometimes schooling fish together for a feast. The green turtle is the one most often seen in the waters around Bribie Island. If you spot a green turtle once, you may have to wait a while to see it again – they usually surface every ten to thirty minutes, but can stay under water for hours at a time! The elusive dugong is listed as vulnerable to extinction, but there is a reasonably stable resident population in Moreton Bay Marine Park. The dugong is not everyone’s idea of beautiful, but sailors-of-old saw them as visions of mermaids. It is paler grey than a dolphin and has no dorsal fin; its upper lip is swollen and trunk-like (in fact its closest land cousin is the elephant!). This placid mammal feeds on the sea-grass beds of Pumicestone Passage. Sea-grass is precious to the dugong - take care to avoid damaging it. More often than not, you first catch sight of a dugong out of the corner of your eye, and it is gone before you realise what you have just seen. Be patient; wait and look towards where he is heading – if you are lucky, a second sighting is your reward! Banksia Beach and White Patch are great swimming spots; pull up in your boat and the kids can chase the soldier crabs along the sand. Further north are camp-sites along the shore; some, such as Mission Point, can only be reached by boat, but are worth the effort. Whether for a day or for a camping-trip, journeying up the Pumicestone Passage will become a lasting memory. The distinctive Glasshouse Mountains in the distance provide a perfect backdrop to sunset, bringing to a close yet another wonderful day on the waters of Bribie Island. THE MANGROVES OF PUMICESTONE PASSAGE CAN’T WE GET RID OF THEM? WHAT GOOD ARE THEY? There are plenty of lovely places on Bribie Island and the nearby mainland, but our extensive salt marshes and mangroves would hardly make it onto a 'must-visit' list. Hard to get to, uncomfortable to walk through and pretty messy; there are reasons why our mangroves don’t get much promotion. But the truth is that so much of our local environment depends on the hard-working mangroves that line the shore on both sides of the Pumicestone Passage. Moreton Bay is an internationally recognised Ramsar site, which means that it is considered to contain large tracts of vital wetland, where migratory birds rest and breed during their 'summer holiday' from Siberia or Alaska. Mangroves grow in the inter-tidal zone, up to the high tide mark, where a lot of silt comes down from creeks and rivers and is deposited along the shoreline. There are real challenges to living in this environment for plants, including big fluctuations in salinity and water temperature with tidal changes and big rain events, low oxygen levels in the soil to name a few. In the Passage, there are several different mangrove species, and they all have their own way of surviving and thriving in salty water.

You’ll have probably seen those long cigar-shaped things that float on the Passage; they are the seeds of the yellow mangrove – great for making a fence around the kids’ sand-castle. Aboriginal people traditionally made good use of mangroves. Grey mangrove wood is strong and light-weight timber, red mangrove is hardwood. The leaves of each different tree are useful for tanning, dyeing or for medicinal purposes. Environmentally, mangroves and marshlands are vital to the health of our waterways. Not only do they offer habitat and sanctuary for young fish and crabs, the roots and leaves provide nutrients that pass along the food chain. Decaying plant matter is eaten by crabs, prawns, and molluscs, plankton and algae, all of which are in turn eaten by the fish that you and I like to catch in the Passage and beyond. Valuable nutrients from mangroves are carried out by the tides into Moreton Bay, to enrich inshore reefs and sea-grass beds, which in turn nourish dugongs, sea turtles and larger fish. The waterways are filtered by the mangroves, which help to absorb and decompose excess nutrient flow or chemical pollution from human land-use.

One of our more common, and one of the most hardy, is the grey mangrove, which can grow to be quite tall. This is the mangrove that has all the roots that stick up out of the mud – really tough on your feet! Those are the pneumatophores, which help the tree to breathe. Late in summer, if you’re along the edge of the Passage, you’re likely to come across one of the grey mangrove seeds, floating on the water – looks like a little round, green book, often already starting to grow roots. Grey mangroves are important bulwarks against erosion, encourage oyster production, and provide protection for juvenile fish, as well as roosts for waterbirds. If you’re out in a boat, drifting north of the Avon wreck (be careful not to get stuck!), you’ll be able to see why Shag Island gets its name – flocks of cormorants roost among the mangroves there at night.

Some of our most beautiful birds, like various honeyeaters (above), enjoy the nectars of flowering mangroves and can be seen flitting about from tree to tree. The funny 'old-man' striated heron creeps around the mangrove roots, on the hunt for tiny crabs and fish. The mangroves are one place where the ibis really does belong – where it is a clean, white and elegant bird – and not at all like a 'bin chicken!' Local SE Qld fisheries are worth about $50 million annually, in total. This includes the trawling industry, the seasonal mullet, tailor and whiting catches, as well as recreational fishing. All these pursuits depend on the good work done by our mangroves and wetlands. 67% of Australia’s commercial catch are fish that are reliant on healthy mangroves.

The red mangrove (above) is the one with the distinctive prop roots, which make it look like it’s walking out of a sci-fi movie. These roots help the red mangrove to breathe and stabilises it during tidal changes or floods. The red mangrove provides a wonderful challenge to fishing enthusiasts. Mangrove jacks and other fish love to lurk amongst the prop roots when the tide is up – casting in the right spot to entice the jack out and bringing it in, before it can swim back to the shelter of the mangroves, can waste a whole afternoon (and several good lures)! Yellow mangroves like to grow closer to the top of the high tide, where there is less salt-water inundation and less wave-action. They don’t grow very high but have buttress roots at the base and lovely, limegreen leaves.

The era of climate change is when mangrove forests and saltwater marshes could at last be properly recognised for their great environmental importance. Mangroves can absorb huge amounts of CO2 from the atmosphere and store it in the roots; this was calculated in 2018 to be 6 billion tonnes annually. Up to four times more carbon can be stored per hectare of mangrove forest than even of tropical rainforest. Not only that but there is also evidence that mangroves are growing thicker, extending their range inland, as well as further south, in response to climate change; thereby further increasing its absorption of carbon. Strong Queensland and national legislation aims to protect mangroves from over-development along our coastal fringe, and there is even a World Wetlands Day (Feb 2nd). So, there are lots of good reasons to appreciate how essential our mangroves and wetlands are, for our environment, our lifestyle and our future. VOLUNTEER MARINE RESCUE BRIBIE ISLAND The unit arose from the Bribie Island Boating and Fishing Club, which in 1970 assumed the responsibility of assisting mariners in distress. It became Bribie Island Air Sea Rescue in 1982 and changed its name to Volunteer Marine Rescue Bribie Island Inc. in March 1997. VMR Bribie Island Incorporated is a volunteer organisation, whose objectives are: • Providing a rescue service, a rescue base and such equipment deemed necessary for the operation of the rescue service and the Association generally • Promoting, fostering and supporting boating safety amongst members and the boating public generally by arranging training and education programs Our area of operation covers some 500 square miles (including Pumicestone Passage) commencing 2 nautical miles south of the Caloundra Bar, 10 nautical miles east of Moreton Island and north of an east/west line from Tangalooma in Moreton Bay. VMR vessels are on the water every weekend and public holidays between 7am and 5pm. All other times are covered by a callout roster 24/7. The radio room operates all year round from 5am to 6pm monitoring VHF channels 16, 73, 67, and repeater channels 20, 21 & 81; and 27Mhz Channels 88 and 90. Our boat crews and radio operators are trained in accordance with relevant national standards, and boat crew are also required to hold first aid qualifications. Our trainers are also trained in vocational training and assessment!

Bribie 1 VMRBI’s primary rescue vessel VMR Bribie Island is one of 26 squadrons affiliated with Volunteer Marine Rescue Queensland, which receives some operational funding from the Queensland Government, and operates under the umbrella of Queensland Fire and Emergency Services. We liaise regularly with the Water Police, particularly for Search and Rescue (SAR) activities which are generally controlled by the Search and Rescue Mission Co-ordinator (SARMC) who is a police officer. Major search and rescue activities may also be controlled by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority, based in Canberra. VMR Bribie Island also receives occasional government and community grants for specific purposes. However, this is never enough and ongoing fundraising efforts by our members are necessary to ensure our continued operational capability. A DAY (OR A NIGHT) IN THE LIFE OF A TRAWLERMAN

A good, clean haul of bay prawns, after a 30 minute 'shot'. Tidy it up, throw back the sidecatch, scoop the rest up with buckets. You can never tell though; sometimes it’s not prawns, sometimes a big bag of jellies… “They really sting – you have to wear long-sleeves to clear them away,” Joey. Then shoot the gear away again – in the hope of a better catch.

Sunday afternoon, 4pm (ish), heading out under the bridge and away. While the trawler is steaming along, there is gear to get ready for the night’s work – checking the nets and repairing any holes from the last trawl, laying the nets flat on the deck, ready to throw in. “I’ve been trawling since I was 14, I’ve been in this marina since they made it,” Red. A long night ahead – looking to come back in about 7am tomorrow. Checking the instruments and sounders – looking for 'signs of life' on the floor of the ocean. Keeping a check on instruments is also about safety - it’s important to be vigilant. Changes in speed can be often heard in the engine – a change in pitch can mean a hook-up with an obstacle on the ocean floor or some other looming disaster, so you have to act fast – reduce revs; winch the nets– now! “Things can get bad really quickly, you have to always listen to the engine,” Joey. After a recent heavy rain, when the lagoons broke through on the island; heading north offshore from Bribie, where you can see the brackish water on the left, the clear oceanic waters on your right. “You don’t just use the sounder to find prawns, you also look for brackish water and other signs,” Joey. Right where the waters meet, following the line – that’s where the prawns will be. Throwing the nets and ready to shoot away! Now, it’s all about making sure there are no tangles or twists in the nets, no hook-ups on the chains or boards. “At that point, it’s all about safety and making sure your gear is set up for the big haul,” Brendon. Lots of company out here; the terns are waiting on the nets to be winched up. Small fish fall out as the net is lifted and swim away, unless a tern gets to it first. Dolphins are always following the boat, too – as well as sharks! Moreton Bay is a big area, but the prawns are often in one spottrawlers side by side or near each other, so you have to keep watch! Most trawlermen talk between boats – especially about their catches; some boats keep to themselves. 24

Between each shot, hose the deck down with salt-water, to clean it off. Wash the surfaces, check all the gear is in the right places, then sort the prawns into size. “I feel good seeing this photo – I feel competent and useful. This is my first season – I think it’s a good opportunity for a young person like me. I like being out on the water, looking out over the horizon. I feel safe being on the boat with Bruce – he will know how to fix any problem,” Isaac. Cooking all through the night – as each catch comes in. 3-5 minutes for a 10kg basket of prawns. Then cool them off in the swim tank, before tipping them into the icebox, to really chill them down in a salty brine. “There are some beautiful times of day sunset, sunrise… it’s always a little relief to see sunrise – the hard parts are over and it’s peaceful, coming back in,” Joey. Coming back under the bridge – time to fold the trawling arms to an exact point, not too tall, not too wide. Aim for the centre of the bridge. Never assume anything – wind, tide, other boaters – it’s never the same as last time. “It’s the most cautious time of the day – I usually 'crab' under the bridge, even on a calm day – always wary,” Joey. Arms up, nets stowed, welcome home ... the customers are waiting at the dock! Pull out the bagged up prawns, ready to weigh up in buckets and sell to the hungry crowd. Then clean up, go home and sleep – ready to do it all again. “I like working at night and sleeping all day. I’m a bit of a night owl,” Isaac. Bribie Island has some of the tastiest, freshest prawns you’ll ever eat. FISHING IN THE PASSAGE Fishing is Australia’s most popular pastime so maybe it`s time to gather the family and wet a line. The Pumicestone Passage at Bribie island is one of south east Queensland’s premier fishing spots as well as being a marine national park. The Pumicestone Passage is approximately 34 km long from the southern end of Bribie Island to the Caloundra Broadwater including many creeks that run both into the mainland and the island. Known for its wide variety of wildlife the passage is also known for its fishing and is host to a huge variety of estuary species as well as some of our best table fish such as snapper, sweet lip, mangrove jack and of cause mud crabs.

DRAGONS ABREAST BRIBIE ISLAND Even in our small community of Bribie Island and surrounding districts, breast cancer has spread its ugly claws to claim many victims. Sadly some of these victims have lost the battle but the majority have survived the trauma of diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation to lead normal healthy lives. Many of these survivors have experienced the benefits of belonging to Dragons Abreast Bribie Island (DABI). After treatment, transition back into a full and active life is often difficult. Women who have had breast cancer can often feel isolated and in need of support from other women who have experienced the emotional and physical effects of cancer. The Dragons Abreast movement was founded by Michelle Hanton in the Northern Territory in 1998 to promote ‘Life after Breast Cancer’. There are now approximately 34 clubs throughout Australia. DABI was formed in 2008. Dragons Abreast provides opportunity, through the sport of dragon boating, for rehabilitation after surgery, fitness, emotional support and best of all, wonderful camaraderie. DABI welcomes anyone in our area who has had a breast cancer diagnosis regardless of gender, age, shape, fitness level or sporting experience. Dragons Abreast is based on participation and inclusiveness in a supportive environment where those travelling the breast cancer journey gradually develop their fitness levels through taking part in this ancient Chinese sport. The club is highly effective in promoting the message of breast cancer awareness and education through the fun of dragon boat racing. Although we do sometimes compete in dragon boat regattas our focus is not on winning but on having fun. We consider ourselves winners already, having survived and beaten breast cancer. We now have 52 members and they have all reaped the rewards from being part of this group. We paddle three times a week on our beautiful Pumicestone Passage and are often joined by dolphins, turtles, pelicans and the occasional dugong. Originally we had just one dragon boat, a 20 seater named ‘Spirit of Bribie’, but have now added a 10 seater, ‘Little Spirit’, to accommodate the large growth in membership over the last 2 years. Many DABI members have travelled together both nationally and internationally (at their own expense) to regatta events, seeing new places and forging lasting friendships. Our members range in age from 51 to 93 and you won’t believe the fun and friendship they experience while out in the dragon boat. But for now we will concentrate on the most commonly caught estuary species and a few spots and hints on how to take home a feed of fresh fish. Bream: These fish inhabit rocky outcrops, oyster beds or submerged structures such as jetties or bridges. Use a running sinker with a trace about 500mm from your swivel to the hook and a size 4 bream hook. When you hook a bream always keep the line tight to prevent your fish from spitting the hook. Bait: Prawns, yabbies and mullet flesh. Flathead: You want to fish a sand or mud bottom and to increase your chances fish on the down tide side of the banks as flathead feed on bait as it’s washed into the deeper water or in the mouth of a creek on the run out tide. Rig your line once again with a running sinker and a trace about 800mm long from the swivel to a long shank size 2 flathead hook. This fish is an expert at shaking the hook loose just as you get him close so keep your line tight after you hook him or if in a boat keep a landing net at the ready. Bait: Hardie heads, yabbies and prawns. Whiting: Probably the most prolific local species and easiest to catch is the summer whiting not to mention its excellent eating qualities. Sand is the magic word for this fish, habituating sandy foreshores, surf beaches and sandbanks. Rig your line with a small sinker and a trace about 400mm from the swivel to a long shank size 4 whiting hook and thread your bait on so the end of the hook is exposed at the bottom. Bait: Live worms and yabbies. Sandcrabs: If you decide to go out on the water in a friend’s boat or hire a boat from one of the hire boat services around the passage it is worth the few dollars at the tackle shop to invest in a crab pot as a crab or two will go well with your fish. Set your pot just off the edge of a sand bank or on a weed bed and you are almost assured of a crab. A trap should be checked every 2 hours for best results and allow plenty of rope and a brightly coloured float. Bait: Mullet whole or frames. Mudcrabs: Top of the list on most people’s menu would have to be the world famous muddy, not easy to find but definitely worth a shot. Place your crab pot up in a creek close to the side with the most mangrove trees. Mudcrabs dig into the steep banks under the shade of these trees and generally like shade or murky water. Your pot should be checked every 3 hours and if you have small or female crabs remove them from your pot as they will scare off other crabs. One last thing, watch your fingers with those claws they are extremely powerful. Bait: Mullet cut in halves or any fresh fish frames. Lastly folks don`t forget the three “S”s , Size, sunscreen and safety. Boating and fisheries officers are patrolling day and night so grab a size chart from your tackle shop and please release all undersize fish as soon as possible. With this great Queensland weather sunscreen should be a part of any responsible fishermen’s tackle. If you intend going boating safety gear is just that, SAFETY GEAR, have it, use it and look after it. ENJOY THE BEAUTY OF BRIBIE ISLAND Bribie Island is the most northern island in Moreton Bay and the third largest. Bribie has been attracting day trippers and holiday makers for many years and the beauty and charm of Bribie Island is still here for you to explore and enjoy. For the first 70 years of European settlement Bribie was an isolated spot and the main inhabitants and visitors were recreational fishermen and oyster farmers. In 1912 a jetty was constructed at Bongaree and the SS Koopa began cruises from Brisbane, stopping at Redcliffe on the way before coming to Bribie. Bribie was a very popular place to visit in the 1930s with day-trippers coming in large numbers to the island. This brought a certain amount of growth to the island and the first shops opened for business along with guesthouses, churches and a bowling club. The first sight that greeted the passengers arriving on the Koopa was what was affectionately known as the twelve apostles. These were the cottages on the Bongaree foreshore that were owned by the Moreton Bay Tug Company and were rented to holiday makers for two shillings and sixpence a week. At this time there was no bridge to connect Bribie and when the Koopa arrived it would usually be filled to capacity with tourists, especially in the school holidays. This could mean at least 1000 people on board. They would fill the foreshore of Bongaree with tents and enjoy what we still enjoy here today.

the Bribie Bridge in 1963. The bridge proved so popular with visitors that the toll charges paid off the bridge in only five years. It also made Bribie the only island in Moreton Bay that was connected to the mainland and this led to an influx of visitors, holiday makers and retirees. Today Bribie still enjoys that reputation as the perfect day trip or holiday and being just 20 minutes off the Bruce Higway adds to that appeal. An interesting way to learn about history on Bribie is by visiting the ‘talking monuments’ on the island. There are three located in different areas. One at the end of Solander Esplanade at Banksia Beach, it talks about the landing of Matthew Flinders on Bribie Island. Next to the Volunteer Marine Rescue building at Bellara you will hear some general history of the island and at the Community Arts Centre on Sunderland Drive the history of the aboriginals on the island is retold. Water activities remain popular so if you have your boat you can choose the perfect spot for launching it. Wildlife on Bribie is varied and interesting. Birdlife abounds at Kakadu Bird Roost and Buckley’s Hole Environmental Park. Visit these areas to see the migrating birds that travel from Siberia to feed here in the summer months and rest in our mangroves and wetlands. The population of black swans around Bribie has increased in the last year and are now spotted closer to the main part of Bribie.

The outbreak of World War II in 1939 brought everything to a halt. Bribie Island became a military zone and civilians were no longer allowed access. A small number of locals were allowed to stay, mostly those with established businesses or services that were required for the military. Bunkers and machine gun nests were built and Bribie’s beaches were used to train Australian and American troops for amphibious landings. Thankfully, when the war was over, Bribie’s reputation as a day-trip destination once again became popular. The relative isolation of Bribie ended when the island became accessible to all with the opening of

The pelicans are firm favourites, not hard to spot but great fun to watch. Seeing them running along the water to take off always seems a wonderful feat for this large bird. In the water the most common animals spotted are dolphins, dugongs and turtles. The dugongs and turtles are usually quick to duck back down under the water but the dolphins sometimes put on a great show. WHEN WORLD WAR II CAME TO TOORBUL POINT

From 1942-45, Toorbul Point (known nowadays as Sandstone Point) was the site of a large Allied amphibious training base. Historian Ron Donald recalls this vital era of Australia’s war history. The waters of Pumicestone Passage at Toorbul Point ripple past the bows of motor launches towing lines of boats filled with fully-armed Australian soldiers. It is August, 1942, and the training of soldiers for amphibious warfare in Papua New Guinea has just begun - for the first time ever on the coastline of Australia.

The Combined Training School (to give it its official title) was an initiative of the Australian Army and established initially to train troops of the AIF 7th Division who had returned in early 1942 after service in the Middle East. Headquarters of the division were at Woodford and its battalions were distributed throughout the South Queensland area. The CTS was under the command of Lieut. Col. Lionel Rose, who had also served - and been wounded - in World War I at the age of only nineteen.

Within the next eight months, more than 25,000 Australian and United States soldiers will be prepared at the Toorbul Point base for amphibious attacks on Japanese-held territory on South-west Pacific islands to the north.

The CTS naval wing - known officially as RAN No. 5 Station - was the province of swashbuckling Englishman, Commander Jack Band, a RAN reservist who was destined to pay the supreme sacrifice during an Allied amphibious landing in New Guinea.

Sailors of the RAN and United States Navy will also take part in the amphibious training, as well as Australian commandos and “soldier sailors” destined to man supply ships in the Pacific theatre of the war.

Navy directive to boat owners The Australian Army did not have any small boats of its own for amphibious training and the British Army had its hands full in campaigns in Europe. Australia, therefore, had to find its own resources. An article in leading Queensland newspapers on Monday, June 8, 1942, carried an official directive under this general heading: All types of boats to be handed over. The story read: “All boat owners in Queensland must hand their boats over to the military authorities. This is the result of an order by Captain E P Thomas, District Naval Officer, Queensland, who said yesterday that it would take effect at once”. “It is estimated that there are over 2000 boats on the Brisbane River and as many more on the waterways of Queensland coastal areas.” “The order applies to skiffs, rowing boats, motor launches, trawlers, drifters, ferries, yachts, dredges, barges, canoes; in fact, craft of any description, including dumb lighters.

American Officers observe a beach landing from the stern of HMAS Koopa in the early days of the Toorbul Point Combined Training School. Folding boats were being used at the time to carry the soliders, with four on each side paddling the craft and an oarsman at the stern. Landings were made both day and night with tide times and currents being critical to the cast-off times in the exercises.

“The owner must clearly and legibly print his name and address on the vessel and leave with it anchors, cables and mooring ropes. He must remove the engine if it does not exceed 5hp and remove from the boat all portable fittings, batteries, equipment and personal belongings”. “Boats must be placed in the water in a position accessible to officers taking over craft or must move them to another place directed”. “There are some exemptions for people using boats to earn a living such as fishing boats and vessels authorised to be used as part of the

BRIBIE HISTORY. Naval Auxiliary Patrol”. “Any owner who fails to comply with the order may have his boat removed or destroyed. Boats taken over by the Military will remain in the charge of the forces for the duration of the war. They will be taken to a ‘boat farm’ where they will be cared for.” Thus the Combined Training School at Toorbul Point had to wait for towing craft such as launches to become available. Meantime, the Army had arranged for the school to be supplied with “folding boats” - collapsible boats made of timber and canvas and used mainly as pontoons for military bridges across expanses of water. But, in the case of the CTS, the boats would be used to transport troops on amphibious day and night training raids on beaches on Bribie Island. In the lead-up to the amphibious training, work had proceeded around the clock - electricity generators on site worked full-time - on the establishment of the CTS and its range of associated facilities and buildings. Among these was the personnel pier from which the soldiers would access the moored folding boats. The first pile for the pier was driven on July 19; it extended 330 feet out to 8ft. 6ins. at low water in the passage and was ready for use 14 days later. A mock-up ship’s side was erected on the beach to enable the soldiers to learn how to use cargo nets for descending into, and climbing up from, amphibious craft at sea. Nearby was a full-scale model of a landing craft for training in entering and leaving procedures. A water supply for up to 1500 men was developed from local bores, supplemented by tanks. In a report, Lt. Col. Rose noted: “Until such time as proper landing craft became available, good training was carried out by landing the army from folding boats, which were towed to a position off the beach to be assaulted by launches manned by the RAN. Ten launches were asked for initially and the first five arrived in August (1942). Towing six folding boats each, there were just enough launches to provide for the first battalion to be trained. “The folding boat equipment proved to be admirably suited to the task, towed well and were safe in quite heavy seas, even with 24 fully-armed and equipped men on board. Thirty boats were required initially and arrived in time. This number gradually increased to about 100…” The soldiers kneeled in the folding boats. Initially, voluntary members of the Naval Auxiliary Patrol helped to co-ordinate the launch-folding boat exercises and were gradually replaced by RAN ratings, the majority of whom had trained at HMAS Assault at Port Stephens on the NSW coast.

Army chief Lt. Gen. Sir John Lavarack inspected the CTS at Toorbul Point eight days after it opened for training and witnessed a battalion landing off South Point on Bribie Island. Each of the folding boats had two oarsmen whose job was to utilise their skills and the prevailing tide to ensure that, after being cast off from the launches, the boats came ashore at the area designated for the “attack”. The exercises were carried out at night, as well as in daylight, and RAAF aircraft simulated battle conditions with strafing and bombing attacks nearby. RAN Admiral Sir Guy Royle was among high-ranking visitors to the school in its early days. Arrival of US personnel Between August 5 and September 7, 1942, four AIF battalions trained at the CTS, being followed by four US battalions (September 9 October 22), two AIF commando companies ((October 12-30), three US battalions (October 27, 1942 - January 1943), one Australian Militia battalion and artillery regiment (January-March), and one Australian tank regiment (March 14-19). Units of one of the US divisions (41st) had to travel 380 miles each way to the school from their area of concentration near Rockhampton. The initial method of training with launches and folding boats began to change at the school with the arrival in November, 1942, of two US landing craft of the first batch to arrive in Australia. The number of craft and USN personnel gradually increased and, by the middle of February, 1943, there were sufficient craft to land an entire battalion, signalling the end of the launch-folding boat era. Shortly after, US vessels at the school included several amphibious landing craft big enough to carry five 25-tons General Grant tanks. In the meantime, the well-known Moreton Bay passenger ferry, s.s. Koopa had also been brought into service, a wharf having been built for her at the school to load soldiers for landing exercises on Bribie and Moreton Islands. Growth in naval personnel numbers From a modest beginning with 16 Naval Auxiliary Personnel men, RAN ratings of all descriptions were posted to the CTS and in August, 1942, naval strength increased to 80. It reached its peak in December when all ranks and ratings numbered 300, including about 18 officers. In the meantime, the school had been visited by Navy chief Sir Guy Royle. On December 8, 1942, a detachment of two officers and 40 ratings of the United States Navy arrived at the school with the objective of teaching the RAN staff the peculiarities of US landing craft. Accommodation became very taxed, especially as this detachment increased quickly in numbers and without notice. By the middle of February, 1943, there were sufficient USN craft at the school to land an entire battalion and the launches and folding boats were no longer needed. CTS assumed the new name of Amphibious Training Centre in March, 1943, under the command of US Admiral Daniel Barbey (who made a personal visit) and the fleet increased rapidly, including three 105ft. long LCTs each capable of carrying five 28-tons tanks. US naval personnel at the centre numbered about 400. High-ranking US Army officers who witnessed training operations at Toorbul Point included Lieut-Gen R Eichelberger, 2-i-c to Supreme Allied Commander General Douglas MacArthur.

Commander John Band, officer-in-charge of the naval wing (RAN Station No. 5) at the Toorbul Point combined school also tendered an official final report as his Army contemporary, Lieut.-Col. Rose, had done.

BRIBIE HISTORY. “When this system was organised, a full infantry battalion of equipped troops could embark in seventeen minutes.” With Toorbul Point now under its control from March, 1943, the US Navy maintained the base for the training of crews of landing craft and also participated in some assault exercises with US troops on the eastern beach of Bribie Island. Era of the “seamen soldiers” With the Japanese retreating in the South-west Pacific area, the Americans moved out of the camp and, from late 1944, it was occupied by “seamen soldiers” of Australian Army Water Transport, REI, the units being the 42nd and 43rd landing craft companies of 54th Port Transport. The latter group had a complement of three officers and 140 personnel, who arrived at Toorbul Point in 20 barges each weighing 40 tons. This aerial view of the early stages of construction of the Bribie Island bridge in 1961 - 16 years after the end of WW2 - shows the remains of jetties built by Australian Army personnel of 2/7 Bn. in 1942. Cdr. Band wrote on March 15, 1943: “Our allies, the American amphibious group here, have now become a permanent detachment. They are proceeding to get plans out to build quite an elaborate show to accommodate between 400 and 500 seamen, side by side with the Australian Naval wing.” Referring to the early stages of the school and construction of the personnel jetty, Cdr. Band wrote: “Permanent mooring lines were rigged on the jetty to which were secured folding boats as used by Army engineers for bridging. They were secured so that they could be warped (at an angle) alongside two pontoons, one on either side of the jetty.

Daily training in the nearby waters of Moreton Bay took the form of sea trials and testing of the barges in preparation for the landing of essential supplies for Allied troops in the war zones in the Pacific islands. When word reached the camp of the Japanese surrender in August, 1945, celebrations ran high over beers in the mess. The then commanding officer, a major who wore a revolver at all times, reportedly withdrew the firearm from its holster and fired celebratory shots into the floor as he approached the bar. The Toorbul Point area used for military purposes in WW2 was bounded by Pumicestone Passage, the area west towards Ningi, including today’s Spinnaker Sound and its environs, and the sloping land now intersected by Bestmann Road. A high-ranking army officer has estimated that the camp covered an area of approximately four square kilometres.
