Fried Rice Ingredients

1/3 cup (80ml) vegetable oil 4 eggs, beaten 2 bacon rashers, chopped 600g green prawns, peeled, deveined, roughly chopped 2 garlic cloves, crushed 1 tbs grated ginger 450g day-old cooked jasmine rice (3/4 cup uncooked) 2 tbs Chinese rice wine (shaohsing) or dry sherry 2 tbs oyster sauce Thinly sliced red chilli, spring onions sliced on an angle and parsley to serve Method Step 1 Heat 2 tablespoons oil in a pan over medium-high heat. Add the eggs and, using a spatula, scramble for 1 minute or until cooked through. Remove the eggs and set aside.

Step 2 Add remaining 2 tablespoons oil to the pan. Add bacon and stir-fry for 4-5 minutes until starting to crisp, then add the prawns, garlic and ginger and stir-fry for 30 seconds. Add rice and stir-fry to combine, then add the rice wine and oyster sauce.

Step 3 Return egg to the pan, season with a little salt, then keep stir-frying, breaking the egg up as you do, for 1 minute or until heated through. Pile into a serving bowl and garnish with chilli, parsley and spring onion.

CAMPING O N

B R I B I E

Bribie Island Recreation Area has a great variety of coastal camping experiences for the avid fisherman or family groups. Some areas within the park are accessible only by boat and others only by four-wheeldrive.

Wherever you go on the island, away from town areas, you need to carry fresh water and be self-sufficient. Vehicle access permits and camping permits apply. Please see the information on the following page for details about these permits.

CAMPING AREAS ACCESSIBLE BY FOUR WHEEL DRIVE Gallagher’s Point Gallagher’s Point has a limited number of bush camping sites. This campground is on the western side of the island, with views over the Pumicestone Passage towards the Glasshouse Mountains and Toorbul. There are no toilets and fresh water is not provided so bring your own supply.

The best all round tyre pressure for sand driving is 16 psi. By letting your tyres down to 16psi you significantly increase the size of the tyres footprint on the sand so you have the same weight of vehicle spread over about twice as much rubber and therefore half the weight per square inch.

Letting tyre pressure down Poverty Creek Poverty Creek is located on the western side of the island and has open grassy sites and shady trees. The adjoining picnic area overlooks the Pumicestone Passage and has views to the Glasshouse Mountains and Donnybrook.

It has sites for camper trailers and groups. Toilets, picnic tables and fireplaces are provided in half of the area.

Fires and heat beads are prohibited in the camper trailer and group camping area, bring a fuel stove. Fires for cooking, only in fireplaces provided.

Bring your own clean firewood, it is illegal to collect firewood on the island. Bring your own supply of fresh water.

Ocean Beach Ocean Beach camping area is on the eastern beach of Bribie Island.

It has designated areas starting 16km north of the beach access on North St, Woorim. Campsites are behind the dunes and are accessible from defined track entrances. Toilet facilities are provided at the camping area accessed by track P. 6

CAMPING ON BRIBIE. You can enter from the end of White Patch Esplanade at Banksia Beach or the Eighth Ave carpark, North St, Woorim.

Beach driving conditions can be unpredictable. During heavy periods of rain, the lagoons overflow, creating creeks across the beach - at times the drop off into these creeks can be deep.

Before taking your vehicle onto the beach, make sure you are familiar with sand-driving techniques and have appropriate equipment.

To protect Bribie Island’s fragile, narrow spit, vehicle traffic is not permitted beyond the World War II northern searchlight emplacement.

On-the-spot fines apply for driving vehicles past this point.

Be prepared with the correct equipment when taking your vehicle on the sand Please use these facilities or bring your own portable enclosed toilet system. Preferably bring a fuel stove. Fires and heat beads are not permitted on the beach or in the camping area. Fresh water is not provided, bring your own supply.

The only place to purchase your 4wd and camping permits in person is before you reach Bribie Island at Gateway Bait and Tackle.

They are located on the Bribie Island Road as you pass through Ningi.

Make sure you stop and pick up your permits there before crossing the bridge to Bribie, otherwise you need to get your permits online or over the phone before you come for your trip.

CAMPING AREAS ACCESSIBLE BY BOAT Boats can be launched on the island at Bongaree, Bellara and Banksia Beach (sand ramp only) and on the mainland at Sandstone Point, Toorbul and Donnybrook boat ramps.

Mission Point Mission Point has relatively protected anchorages for boats in front of each campsite. On the western side of Bribie Island the campsites overlook the Pumicestone Passage with views to the Glasshouse Mountains.

The campgrounds have recently been upgraded with water now connected to the toilets and new picnic tables and fireplaces installed on all sites.

Watch the tides!

They also supply bait, ice and gas so it’s a good stopping point to get yourself fully stocked for your time away.

TIPS FOR A SAFE VISIT

Fires for cooking are allowed only in the fireplaces provided. Bring your own clean firewood, it is illegal to collect firewood on the island. Bring your own supply of fresh water.

Take care when driving in sand - Watch for dingoes and wild dogs Watch the tides! On Ocean Beach, travel as close as possible to low tide, as this is when beach driving conditions are safest.

Lime Pocket

Avoid driving during the two hours either side of high tide - Bring enough water as fresh water is not available at any camping or picnic areas - Watch for 4WDs when on the beach - Take care when swimming, the beaches are not patrolled - Use fireplaces provided; put fires out with water (not sand).

Lime Pocket has two bush camping sites and is on the western side of the island overlooking the Pumicestone Passage and Glasshouse Mountains.

Fires for cooking, only in fireplaces provided. Bring your own clean firewood and supplies of fresh water. No toilet facilities so please bring your own portable enclosed toilet system.

4WD ACCESS Vehicles travelling through the recreation area must be road-registered 4WDs. A vehicle access permit must be purchased and displayed on your vehicle windscreen before driving in the recreation area.

LOOKING AFTER OUR PARK • Take your rubbish with you when you leave • Don’t use shampoos and soaps in or near waterways • In areas where toilets are not provided, bring a portable enclosed toilet • When driving, stay on tracks and off the dunes.

CAMPING ON BRIBIE. “if you catch a fish and aren’t sure what species it is, you might unknowingly be doing the wrong thing. There are a few simple tips to help you remember the difference between these fish”.

•A large dark spot on the tail distinguishes the dusky flathead from other types of flathead.

• Dark blotches on the back and sides set aside adult trumpeter whiting from sand, goldline and northern whiting.

• Silver javelin and barred javelin can often be mistaken for pikey bream. Look out for silver javelin which has numerous scattered dark brown to black blotches on the body and dark blotches on the dorsal fins.

Stay safe on the water Foredunes are important habitat for wildlife - When boating, observe the Go Slow areas and go slowly over seagrass beds - dugongs feed here.

FISH AND TIPS Pumicestone Passage’s extensive tidal wetlands are essential breeding areas for many fish, crabs and prawns. During winter the passage between Bells Creek and Caloundra Bar is one of south-east Queensland’s principal spawning areas for yellowfin bream. Flathead, bream, whiting, tailor and mangrove jack are often caught around Bribie Island.

Many people catch sand and mud crabs during the summer months. The passage is part of the Moreton Bay Marine Park. Recreational fishing activities are permitted in the marine park, except in the Tripcony Bight – Long Island and Westaways Creek marine national park zones.

•B arred javelin unlike silver javelin has vertical bars along their flanks.

These bars are comprised of spots and blotches. Javelin also ‘grunt’ when caught, hence the common name ‘grunter bream’.

• Bream are completely silver in colour and have no blotches or spots.

Bream have a forked tail unlike javelin. Yellowfin bream have yellowwhite anal and pelvic fins.

• Juvenile snapper, known as ’squire’, can be mistaken for bream. The upper bodies of snapper vary from pale pink to reddish mostly with bluish spots.

BRIBIE ISLAND RECREATION AREA

Fisheries Queensland is asking Bribie Island visitors and residents to polish up on fish identification before they cast a line.

They find that misidentification of fish was common for species such as flathead, whiting, javelin, snapper and bream.

DRAGONS ABREAST BRIBIE ISLAND Even in our small community of Bribie Island and surrounding districts, breast cancer has spread its ugly claws to claim many victims. Sadly some of these victims have lost the battle but the majority have survived the trauma of diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation to lead normal healthy lives.

Many of these survivors have experienced the benefits of belonging to Dragons Abreast Bribie Island (DABI). After treatment, transition back into a full and active life is often difficult. Women who have had breast cancer can often feel isolated and in need of support from other women who have experienced the emotional and physical effects of cancer.

Dragons Abreast provides opportunity, through the sport of dragon boating, for rehabilitation after surgery, fitness, emotional support and best of all, wonderful camaraderie.

There are now approximately 34 clubs throughout Australia. Our local club, Dragons Abreast Bribie Island (DABI) was formed in 2008.

DABI welcomes anyone in our area who has had a breast cancer diagnosis regardless of gender, age, shape, fitness level or sporting experience.

The club is highly effective in promoting the message of breast cancer awareness and education through the fun of dragon boat racing.

Although we do compete in dragon boat regattas, our focus is not on winning but on having fun. We consider ourselves winners already, having survived and beaten breast cancer.

We now have around 60 members and they have all reaped the rewards from being part of this group. We paddle three times a week on our beautiful Pumicestone Passage and are often joined by dolphins, turtles, pelicans and the occasional dugong.

Support from our community and Government grant funding has allowed us to replace our original 20 seat dragon boat, with two new 20 seater boats and a smaller 10 seater boat.

Our club is well equipped with all the appropriate safety equipment to successfully and safely accommodate our local growing membership.

Dragons Abreast Australia is a national organisation comprised of breast cancer survivors (and some very special supporters) of various ages from a great variety of backgrounds, athletic abilities and interests.

Many DABI members have travelled together both nationally and internationally (at their own expense) to regatta events, seeing new places and forging lasting friendships. Our members range in age from 51 to 96 and together enjoy much fun and friendship.

Dragons Abreast members provide a “face� for the breast cancer statistics whilst spreading the message of breast cancer awareness through participation in the wonderful sport of dragon boat racing.

Your radio 101.5fm is best known as the life-line for local residents when the inevitable emergency or natural disaster occurs such as cyclones, fires and floods.

During any such emergency, the latest information from the Weather Bureau, Regional Council and emergency services, including the police, fire services and the SES is broadcast throughout the day and night with specially trained personnel at the station collating and disseminating information and advice to listeners.

The focus is always on the local situation within the Moreton Bay Regional Council area that does not always receive adequate coverage from Brisbane based radio stations. Local residents are also encouraged to contact the station with their own updated information that can be passed on to other listeners.

In times of major emergencies, Council and disaster management crews are offered direct access to the station’s main studios to broadcast directly to residents. This is particularly important should the need arise for evacuations.

It is imperative in any natural disaster or emergency that households always have a torch and battery operated radio handy because of potential power failures.

GRANDPOP’S GUIDE TO THE 15 MOST FUN THINGS TO DO AT BRIBIE - FOR KIDS 1. Sea-life spotting on boats…or anywhere, for that matter. Bribie is blessed with dolphins, dugongs and sea turtles. Keep a look out and you’ll also see stingrays leaping from the water, cormorants and darters diving for fish, whistling and brahminy kites as well as pelicans and seagulls soaring overhead.

2. Finding shells on the beach. Long walks on the beach will help use up some of the grandkids’ energy. There’s plenty to see and find.

Winter or summer, the water is warm enough to splash along in the shallows, looking for seaweed, shells, driftwood, and you can watch the little fish dart around your feet.

We have pram and wheelchair access to the sand at Woorim, and there are sand wheelchairs available, too, so now the beach is for everyone! If you like to take your pup along, head to Red Beach – the kids are going to love finding the big, driftwood cubby-houses there.

3. Building sandcastles. What to do with all their shells and seaweed? Build a sandcastle, of course! While the kids are doing that, they can dig a little pond; the nearer the water, the better – so it fills up past your ankles as you sit and watch them. If you’re lucky, the kids might decide to bury your legs in the sand; and then forget where they left you.

4. Swimming. Take your pick – safe swimming on the Passage near Bongaree; boogie-boarding the waves at Woorim’s Ocean Beach or having lots of fun at our fabulous Aquatic Leisure Centre. Bribie has so many great swimming spots – come on in Grandpop, the water’s great!

5. Bike and scooter riding. Can you keep up with the grandkids?

Some of the best walking/riding paths anywhere are on Bribie Island. Try cycling all the way along the Passage from Sunset Park to Bongaree – that should wear them out.

(and it’s also right near another ice-cream shop..) If the grandkids like getting a little muddy, you could pump some yabbies; one good spot is Kalmakuta Park. They’ll have to be quick, to pick up those yabbies; really quick.

12. Going to playgrounds. Bribie island has more playgrounds than you could poke a stick at – all of them different and loads of fun. Scale the big climbing frame at Woorim, be a pirate at Sylvan Beach, fly through the air on the flying fox at Maigen’s favourite playground, in Bongaree.

13. Chasing soldier crabs. Soldier crabs are small and blue and cute – and come out in their thousands on the falling tide, all along the Passage, rolling the sand into fields of little balls. The kids will have a lovely, foot-tickly time walking over the sand-balls. If you come across a “platoon” of soldier crabs, the sandflat will become a frenzy of digging, and the soldier crabs will disappear in seconds – what fun!

If the kids show any promise, you can put them to good use – chasing the ibis away from the café tables.

14. Visiting the museum. Bribie Seaside museum is so exciting – especially all those jars of weird and wonderful fish! Every school holidays, the kids can enjoy some really interesting creativity sessions at the museum. And while that’s happening, you can wander the displays in peace.

15. Eating hot chips at the beach. Is there a better way to finish a big day out with Grandpop? Bluey Piva Park overlooks the Ocean Beach and has picnic tables, to spread out the chip wrapping and sprinkle on the lemon juice. If you’d like to watch the sunset, bring your hot chips Passage-side and keep a last lookout for some dolphins; then bundle those kids back into the car – they’ll be asleep before you get home!

6. Having an ice-cream. Around every corner is another ice-cream shop. Now, that has to be a good thing, doesn’t it?

7. Starting a collection. Kids always love to collect things – feathers, gumnuts, grazes on the knee. Henry loves to go metal-detecting and has collected lots of interesting stuff– bottle caps, old nails and WWII bullet casings, coins and two matchbox cars!

8. Arts and crafts. There’s plenty of inspiration for everyone at our Community Art Centre, each room has another exciting craft group.

On the last Sunday of the month, there’s also a market, where the different craft clubs open their doors and allow us to see how they do it. Oh, and talking about collecting, the Gem Club let the kids do a bit of real fossicking on market Sunday - and to take home their lovely semi-precious finds.

9. Reading. Whiling away the afternoon on a quiet read is one of life’s great pleasures and a good pastime to encourage in the kids.

Bribie Island Library has heaps of books for all ages, and plenty more besides – jigsaw puzzles and games, magazines, even movies and music. During the school holidays they organise fantastic kids’ activities there, too.

10. Outdoor games. Beach cricket, soccer on the foreshore, basketball near Crest Park, skateboarding at the Bellara skatepark; there are plenty of ways to get those little bodies active. If the kids can get their mates to come too, the more the merrier!

11. Fishing. You don’t even have to land a fish, to have a good day’s fishing – it’s just fun, having a go. Bongaree jetty is a good place to try tossing a line – the kids will enjoy being “amongst it” with the other fishers, checking out their bait and gear, admiring their catch. www.bribie.com.au

BRIBIE ISLAND ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION The natural environment of Bribie Island is the 'Jewel in Moreton Bay Marine Park,' protected by United Nations International Conservation Treaties.

BIEPA (Bribie Island Environmental Protection Association) is an active group of people from a range of backgrounds and experience, united in their desire to ensure the protect ion of the flora and fauna of the island.

Monthly meetings where you can engage with the guest speaker and participate in lively discussions are held on the fourth Monday of the month in the Anzac Room of the Bribie Island RSL. Some members choose to be involved in projects, such as dune restoration and planting, monitoring and recording endangered loggerhead turtle nesting activity, water monitoring and controlling the spread of canetoads.

The opportunity to see animals in the wild including a wide range of marine species, kangaroos, wallabies and reptiles make Bribie Island an enchanting destination. Bribie Island is a birder's paradise with more species than Kakadu National Park.

Bribie Island's extensive variety of flora is celebrated annually, usually in August with a Wildflower Walk, as part of the Sunshine Coast Wildflower Festival. Bribie Island is home to 320 native plant species including endangered orchids, Christmas bells, boronia and the diverse wildflowers of the wallum heath.

Bribie Island Surf Life Saving Club has been patrolling Woorim Beach, Bribie Island since December 1923, which was started by the Metropolitan Swimming Club.

The beach can experience strong currents, inshore holes and is susceptible to blue bottle stings in strong north-easterly conditions, so always swim between the flags.

The club is also home to a large and very successful Junior Activities section, with a membership of approximately 200. Children from age 7-13 years enjoy developing confidence in the surf, learning surf safety skills and having the opportunity to compete in the Surf Sports Arena.

The Bribie Island Surf Life Saving Club through the success of their Supporters Club funds the continuation of volunteer surf life saving on Bribie Island, ensuring our beach is safe for all to enjoy. The life savers patrol the beach yearly from September to the last weekend in April.

VOLUNTEER MARINE RESCUE, BRIBIE ISLAND The unit arose from the Bribie Island Boating and Fishing Club, which in 1970 assumed the responsibility of assisting mariners in distress. It became Bribie Island Air Sea Rescue in 1982 and changed its name to Volunteer Marine Rescue Bribie Island Inc. in March 1997.

VMR Bribie Island Incorporated is a volunteer organisation, is an affiliate squadron of Volunteer Marine Rescue Queensland and is dedicated to: • Promoting, fostering and supporting boating safety amongst members and the boating public generally by arranging training and education programs • Providing a rescue service, a rescue base and such equipment deemed necessary for the operation of the rescue service and the Association generally.

Our area of operation covers some 500 square miles (including Pumicestone Passage) commencing 2 nautical miles south of the Caloundra Bar, 10 nautical miles east of Moreton Island and north of an east/west line from Tangalooma in Moreton Bay. VMR vessels are on the water every week-end and public holidays between 7am and 5pm. All other times are cover by a callout roster 24/7. The radio room operates all year round from 5am to 6pm monitoring VHF channels 16, 73, 67, and repeater channels 21 & 81; and 27Mhz Channels 86, 88 and 90.

Our crews are well trained and undergo competency tests, and are required to hold a current first aid and CPR qualification The sole reason for the existence of Volunteer Marine Rescue groups is the saving and preservation of life at sea. Any other work we do – towing of disabled vessels, transporting persons or assisting with boating events etc. – is a secondary and discretionary service we provide to the public.

VMR Bribie Island is one of 25 squadrons affiliated with Volunteer Marine Rescue Queensland and operates under the umbrella of the State Emergency Service with some responsibilities to the Department of Transport.

We liaise with the Water Police while major Search and Rescue (SAR) activities are generally controlled by the Search and Rescue Mission Co-ordinator (SARMC) who is a police officer. On occasions activities may be controlled by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority, based in Canberra.

VMR Bribie Island active members are all volunteers and the organisation, in addition to receiving government funding, depends on community support and fundraising to meet its operational and training needs. Active members become SES members and are covered under the SES Insurance and Workcover scheme, while on duty. Primary emphasis is placed on safety with the safety of crew members and members of the public being the first priority in all we do.

VMR Bribie Island receives subsidies from the Queensland Government, Moreton Bay Regional Council, Volunteer Marine Rescue Queensland and through the generosity of our sponsors and supporters. However, this is never enough and ongoing fundraising efforts by our members are necessary to ensure our continued operational capability.

A WORD FROM OUR STATE MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT Representing the Pumicestone Electorate is a privilege and comes with great responsibility.

I have recently announced that I will not be recontesting the seat of Pumicestone at the next State Election to be held in October 2020.

This was a difficult decision to make but I believe it to be in the best interests of my family, including my aging parents who I want to support and give my undivided time to.

I am proud of what I have accomplished as an Opposition Member of Parliament and I hope locals feel Pumicestone is progressing in the right direction with the attention I have been giving to the most important needs of our community.

Our number one need is for road upgrades to Bribie Island Road and Beachmere Road.

These two State Controlled Roads are major connecting routes, yet they are dangerous and congested in parts and are not meeting community expectations.

The best way for the State Government to make a start is to put the $20 million of Federal funding that I advocated so strongly for into fixing Bribie Island Road.

This funding can kick start projects waiting in the wings, like the highly dangerous Old Toorbul Point Road intersection.

These two roads are just too important to neglect any longer – there can be no more delays.

and these discussions are continuing. With the highest median age in Queensland, it is more important than ever before to ensure the health and wellbeing of locals.

That said, Bribie Island is home to many older Queenslanders who have spent their lives working and contributing to build a great Australia. It’s vital that we, as a community, support and protect them to ensure they can live with dignity in what should be their golden years.

Sadly over half of Australia’s adult population is worried about a loved one experiencing financial abuse and it’s estimated that around 1 in 10 older Australians experience elder abuse in any given year, with the prevalence of neglect possibly higher.

Many people do not discuss their concerns with others because of feelings of shame, fear of retaliation, the involvement of family members or fear they will be institutionalised.

Some people may not even realise what they are experiencing is indeed abuse or they may feel that somehow it’s their fault.

I encourage my community to be vigilant around this important issue.

If you are, or you know an older person who you suspect may be experiencing elder abuse you can call the Elder Abuse Helpline on 1300 651 192 for free and confidential advice.

I love my community, I love our people and I adore our environment. All this is what motivates me every day and I will continue to work hard for my community whilst I remain the local State representative.

We have all seen the impact of our bridge being closed during traffic accidents and the all-to-usual gridlock being experienced on busy weekends and public holidays.

We need our emergency vehicles to be able to access the bridge at all times without impediment. It carries great risk to the public for emergency service vehicles to navigate a grid-locked bridge in their efforts to reach a potentially lifesaving call.

With the amount of people now living on the Island, coupled with the volume of visitors and tourists who come to enjoy our shores, it’s time for planning to progress on building a new bridge for Bribie now, not in 10 or 15 years’ time.

I am pleased to have strongly advocated for our environment and see the gains for this. We live in a unique area and I firmly believe that a measure of a good community is in how we act as custodians of our environment.

Shellfish collection (excluding Pippis) in Moreton Bay is now banned and our eco-marine environment is better protected because of this.

We now have a container refund station on the Island - no more lengthy trips to Caboolture or Morayfield are needed for locals.

Our pelicans who have roosted on Bribie Island Bridge for decades felt the full force of our community when decisions were made that endangered their safety and wellbeing.

I was proud to stand alongside my community as we took up the fight for our pelicans to have their roosts returned. Returning only five roosts wasn’t enough and only the LNP has committed to returning all 13 roosts and removing the callous deterrents that were put in place.

I am also committed to better health services and particularly increasing access to urgent care for Bribie locals.

Welcome to Bribie Island! This beautiful area is everything this magazine portrays and more, as words and pictures don’t do this stunning area justice.

It’s being called a national epidemic - loneliness. So many Australians experience social isolation that there is talk of a federal Minister for Loneliness. If you live with physical or intellectual disability or illness, loneliness is an everyday reality.

Bribie island is renowned for its relaxed holiday lifestyle, great fishing and unique and thriving local businesses. With an abundance of recreational attractions including bushwalking trails, pristine beaches and relaxing parklands and foreshores, as well as cafes, shops, restaurants and more, it is easy to see why Bribie and surrounds has become a tourist and daytrip hot spot for domestic and international visitors alike.

One local not-for-profit organisation is meeting that problem head-on, in a uniquely local, Bribie Island way.

I am proud to be the Moreton Bay Regional Council representative for Division 1 and I am committed to ensuring that we strike the right balance between continued growth for local businesses whilst maintaining and preserving our flora, fauna and way of life that we all know and love.

Council continues to invest in vital local infrastructure improvements such as exercise equipment, playground and park upgrades and renewals and amenities upgrades to ensure that residents and visitors enjoy their time here. If you are staying in the Bongaree caravan park, you will also notice investment in upgrades such as the camp kitchen and playground and the cabin renewals - all designed to make your stay more enjoyable. The construction of new footpaths provide safe, equal access that encourages walking and cycling as well as greater connections for users of mobility scooters to enjoy.

Whether you live locally or are visiting, can I encourage you to make the most of all this area has to offer. Sit back and relax on our stunning beaches or take a dip in our beautiful ocean. Enjoy a picnic in one of our beautiful parks, dine at some of our great restaurants and cafes or take a look at the beautiful Bribie Island National Park. You can also peruse the arts and craft on display at the Bribie Island Community Art Centre or discover some local history at the Seaside Museum. Bribie island is also home to regular weekend markets, and don’t forget to check out the entertainment that is on offer at some of our great local venues. For those who like to get more active we have some great tour operators with lots of options from bike and paddle board hire through to 4wd beach tours and bbq boat hire. There is something for everyone on Bribie Island. But of course, no trip to the beach is complete without an icecream at the end of the day.

Whether it’s the clam side, surf side or our mainland, with so much on offer it is no wonder this really is the best place to live, work and play.

Fishability QLD Inc. started as a competition, run at Bribie Island Boat Charters, Sandstone Point. Robyn and Brendon, who operate the boat hire, knew there some weeks during the year that their BBQ boats were less busy than usual. They decided to use those “quiet” weeks, to offer an affordable, accessible leisure activity to some of the more disadvantaged and socially isolated members of our community.

The invigorating and restorative value of a day on a boat is obvious and well-known; it was even more apparent for people who are often unable to engage in outdoor recreation or social interaction. As a result, FishAbility was begun, and several organisations were invited to regularly compete in a friendly year-long competition.

Social Inclusion/support worker Emma Dyson had been bringing clients to Bribie Island Boat Charters since 2013. Emma supported disadvantaged and isolated people in the community of SE Queensland. She often integrated her love of fishing, boating and the great outdoors into her work. Throughout this time, Emma witnessed individuals emerge from the confines of social isolation and saw immediate improvements in physical and mental health.

2018 witnessed the rollout of the NDIS. The funding to the organisation where Ms Dyson was employed, was cut and she, like many workers, was made redundant by the changes. This meant that many people not eligible for NDIS became more vulnerable and excluded. For example, the BBQ boats and competition remained affordable but transportation to Bribie Island was not.

Emma decided to take a leap of faith, using her redundancy money to register Fishability QLD Inc. as a not-for-profit charity, to protect and promote the program which had already done so much for people in the community who experience disadvantage and social isolation.

The not-for-profit soon reached charitable status and has grown significantly in numbers of participants. Further, it has extended its reach beyond the Pumicestone Passage and holds regular community land-based fishing events across SE Queensland, enabling greater integration of more than 1000 vulnerable people into their local communities.

In the words of a regular fishing enthusiast, Denise: “I really enjoy coming to the fishing events… (it) gets me out into the sunshine and going out on a boat is an opportunity that I would other wise not have a chance to do. I look forward to the days when fishing is on and I’m eager to arrive earlier, so not to miss a seat on the bus, as it is a very popular activity.”

250 Years

AFTER

James Cook Barry Clark – Bribie Island Historical Society This year 2020 is the 250th Anniversary of James Cook first sailing the “Endeavour” along this coast in 1770, and naming the distant “Glasshouses” that reminded him of glass making kilns in his distant homeland.

Cook had chanced upon this coast after observing the Transit of Venus in Tahiti, and sailing West to circumnavigate New Zealand.

He did not see Bribie Island or the large Moreton Bay as he was way off the coast, but sailed on north to claim the whole East coast what would later be known as Australia.

It was 18 years later in 1788 that the First Fleet brought convicts to Sydney to establish a Penal colony here.

Eleven years after that in 1799 Matthew Flinders with aboriginal companion Bongaree explored Moreton Bay, and were first to set foot on Bribie Island, and climb one of Glasshouse mountain.

It was 60 years later in 1859 that the new colony of Queensland was separated from NSW. Over those many years, few came to this desolate Island.

A Long Time Ago Bribie has not been an island very long, because 10,000 years ago the sea and coastline was over 50 kms away, beyond Moreton Island.

There was no Moreton Bay or any islands, and the whole area was dry land before the sea level slowly rose over thousands of years.

The sea level actually rose higher than it is now, with areas of the island being under water.

Moreton Bay islands and rivers have only been this was for about 1000 years.

Indigenous people lived in this area for many thousands of years and much evidence of Bora Rings, stone tools and weapons can be found on Bribie Island.

Bribie is a sand island so any stones found here have come from elsewhere.

Bribie tribes traded fish and local “Bungwall” fern roots to get stone tools from many distant areas.

Aboriginal camp on Bribie 1894 The first white men to live with the indigenous people of Bribie arrived by chance in 1823, when three castaway convicts lost in a huge storm out of Sydney were washed up on Moreton Island.

They walked around the bay, crossed a big river, and lived for many months among the Bribie people before being rescued.

They thought they were south of Sydney and spent months exploring to the north in search of the Settlement.

It was their rescue by John Oxley in 1824 that led to the finding of the Brisbane River and the establishment of a new Penal Colony there.

Pioneers of Bribie Within a hundred years of Cook’s first charting this coast, the extensive Aboriginal population of Moreton Bay had been reduced to just a few.

BRIBIE HISTORY. Queensland’s first Aboriginal reserve was established at Whitepatch on Bribie Island in 1877.

In the 1880’s harvesting Oysters in Pumicestone Passage and a Timber Milling became significant operations until the huge flood of 1893 silted up the Passage and brought them both to an end. In 1891 Archibald Meston, Explorer, Author and Politician, and official “Protector of the Aborigines”, briefly visited Bribie Island and wrote this comment in his diary.

Camping on Bribie 1922 ZOO without a FENCE By 1930, the resident population was less than 50 people, and some cottages, guesthouses and a road from Bongaree to the Ocean Beach had been constructed.

The first car came to Bribie in 1918, six years before any road existed.

First Car on Bribie 1918 During Christmas and Easter holidays there could be over 5000 people camped in canvas tents along the foreshore.

Woorim was the closest surf beach to Brisbane, even with the 3-hour steamship trip to Bribie, before roads opened up the Gold Coast.

Huge “Groper” Fish were caught from the Bribie Jetty and massive hauls of Mullet caught on Ocean Beach.

Dugong Fishermen It is therefore quite remarkable that in the early 1900’s the Brisbane Tug Company invested in turning Bribie Island into Australia’s first Island holiday destination.

The Great Depression struck in the 1930’s, and by 1940 World War 2.

In 1912 they leased land, constructed the Jetty at Bongaree, had a large steamship built and brought out from UK, and developed a popular holiday destination.

By the 1920’s thousands came by steamship from Brisbane on weekends and holidays to camp, fish, swim, and enjoy the basic lifestyle it offered.

There were no roads or vehicles, no power, water supply or services and it was seen a “Zoo without a Fence” with its extensive bird, fish and animal life.

After the War, the “Steamship Excursions” resumed but by now the Motor Car was popular, and visitors braved the dreadful roads to an ex-military vehicle ferry across the Passage to the Island.

The island was again a popular place for holidays and fishing.

The bridge to Bribie opened in 1963 when the resident population was about 700 people.
