When you think of a holiday destination that includes beaches you automatically think summer and hot weather. There is no denying that summer is a great time to visit Bribie. But Bribie Island has benefits all year round, through all the seasons, so come for a visit or stay anytime. Summer runs from December to February which is ideal for the beach and all watersports as well as fishing anywhere on the island. The Pumicestone Passage has designated areas for all sorts of boating pursuits. Kayaking and sailing are perfect activities to get involved in. If you head up the passage towards Caloundra a great stopping point for kayakers is Mission Point. There are toilets, a picnic area for day use and even campsites for a longer stay. There are designated areas to water ski, wakeboard and jet ski on the passage.

on the passage side of the island run all the way from the end of The Esplanade (near the museum), under the Bribie bridge and to the end of Sylvan Beach Esplanade at the canal entrance. This is a truly memorable and fun way to see the whole beachfront of Bribie. A bike track will also take you all the way to the surf side of Woorim by following First Avenue past the high school and across the island. The water is starting to cool off but days on the beach are still magical in the Autumn sunshine. Camping is a great option at this time of year. Slightly cooler days are great for setting up and pulling down campsites.

The Christmas holidays and school holidays are a big part of summer so not only do we have more daylight hours but many of us have more time to enjoy it. Of course the beaches simply call out as the place to be in summer. A day on the beach, either surf side or passage side, can be either relaxing or action packed. Pack a picnic lunch and lots of drinks for the day. Alternatively grab some takeaway food or eat-in at one of the many eateries located on the island.

No matter what your age and your family, pack spades, buckets, bats and balls and you are set for a great day out. A lovely finish to a summers day is a bbq dinner by the beach to take full advantage of the hot summer nights. An evening walk or ride on our great network of bike tracks to watch the sun set over the Glasshouse Mountains is always magical. Ocean Beach at Woorim is great for a long beach walk, heading either way from the patrolled surf beach you can walk for many kilometres. Look out for dolphins as you wander along. Autumn follows from March to May where we get some relief from the scorching hot weather and can enjoy such activities as fishing or a wander around the variety of markets on the island. Another great thing to do this time of year is bike riding where you can go for a long time without getting overheated. The bike and walking tracks

Winter runs from June to August and are fairly mild. A round of golf or game of bowls is great this time of year, when we have clear blue skies and warm winter sunshine there is nothing better to warm you up. The beach is still a drawcard and a good way to experience it is to go 4 wheel driving on the 4WD beach or inland track. Explore the World War II bunkers on the way, minus the many mosquitoes that seem to bother you in summer. Gain access from the end of White Patch Esplanade, Banksia Beach or at the end of North Street, Woorim. See the camping page of this magazine for details on permits for this area. Bike riding and bushwalks are also great this time of year as you can go for a long time and cool down soon afterwards. A picnic in the park is still a perfect day out and being out on the water for fishing or just for a look around is a pleasant way to spend a winter’s day. Warming up again from September to November, Spring hits the island with everything seeming to come alive. Keep a lookout for ducklings. This time of year you are bound to have to stop the car and let a family of ducks and ducklings cross the road, the kids love it. Camping is nice and comfortable this time of year also with beautiful weather through the day for the beach and even swimming. Fishing was the main attraction for tourists right from the days when the s.s. Koopa began bringing tourists here in 1911 and it still has that attraction today. You can easily find a great spot for fishing from land in one of the many idyllic beach locations.

ABOUT BRIBIE. Boating is made easy on Bribie with lots of options to choose from. If you have your own boat there are boat ramps at the following locations. Before crossing the bridge to Bribie you can launch your boat at Spinnaker Sound Marina, this boat ramp is good when its a bit windy on the passage as its a protected place to launch. Turning left after crossing the bridge you will get to the boat ramp near the Volunteer Marine Rescue building. This ramp is quite wide so can accommodate a couple of boats at one time, when there is perfect boating weather that room is definitely needed. To the right of the bridge, along Welsby Parade, you will find another boat ramp with plenty of trailer parking. The final boat ramp on the island is located on Solander Esplanade at Banksia Beach. This ramp is a sand ramp only so suitable for small boats and prefereably 4wds. Another option for boat launching if you are coming from the highway is at Toorbul or Donnybrook where the advantage there is that you are further up the passage once you launch. Handy if you want to get to your favourite fishing spot quickly. You can also hire a boat on Bribie Island or a bbq boat complete with on-board toilet and covered seating areas from Bribie Island Boat Charters to enjoy a day fishing in the beautiful Pumicestone Passage. Ferryman Cruises offer cruises at all different times to see the passage or charter them for your own special event.

good array of playgrounds and bbq and picnic areas are found all over so find you favourite spot and get settled for the morning, afternoon or day. The Information Centre is a good spot to stop on your first visit to Bribie. The volunteers are more than happy to help you to enjoy your stay and there are many brochures on everything Bribie and the surrounding areas have to offer. For information about Bribie Island’s history pick up a copy of the brochure “Bongaree Walkabout” from the Information Centre. This brochure was produced by local historians and you can follow it and take a self-guided walk around the historical area of the island. It starts and finishes at the Bongaree jetty and visits sixteen sites along the way. There are plaques located along the walk which tell you information specific to that area.

To ensure your boating experience is a safe one Bribie Island has its own Volunteer Marine Rescue unit. It is a volunteer organisation which promotes boating safety amongst members and the boating public. They provide a rescue service and rescue base here on Bribie Island. The unit is affiliated with VMR Queensland and the State Emergency Service and takes direction from the Queensland Police Service (Water Police). VMR Bribie rescue vessels are on the water every weekend and on all public holidays from 0800 to 1700 hours. All other hours are covered by rostered crews to ensure a full 24 hour / 7 day a week service. The radio room operates all year round seven days a week from 0600 to 1800 hours on 27MHZ Channels 86,88,90 and on VHF Channels 16, 67,73,81.

Some more history of the area can be gained by visiting the “talking monuments”. On Solander Esplanade, Banksia Beach, near White Patch Esplanade you will hear the story of the landing of Matthew Flinders. At Marine Drive, Bellara near the Volunteer Marine Rescue building you will hear the history of the island, and while visiting the Community Arts Centre, Banksia Beach you can hear the history of the aboriginals on the island.

All areas of Bribie offer great locations for swimming, whether you want the calm passage side or enjoy the waves of the surf side. A

For bird and nature lovers, Buckley’s Hole Conservation Park is located at the end of the Esplanade at Bongaree. Buckley’s Hole has a

ABOUT BRIBIE. large number of bird species regularly visiting it so is a must if your interest lies there. The Kakadu Bird Roost, at the southern end of Solander Esplanade, also attracts a wonderful selection of birdlife all year round. Migrating birds from as far away as Siberia come here in the summer months to feed and rest in the mangroves and wetlands. For those interested in arts and crafts a visit to the Bribie Island Community Arts Centre on Sunderland Drive is worthwhile. Set in lovely bushland surroundings it is the place to see displays from local artists and craft persons. Painting, pottery, woodcraft, jewellery, paper craft, gems and many other handmade items are on display and for sale. The Matthew Flinders Gallery is also located here and hosts changing exhibitions from a wide range of exhibitors all year round. The centre is manned by volunteers and is open Tuesday - Sunday 10am - 4pm. Bribie is well equipped with sporting clubs to visit when here. There are two championship golf courses located here, the Bribie Island Golf Course in Woorim and the Pacific Harbour Golf & Country Club in Banksia Beach. Both courses offer top quality greens, facilities and restaurants. There are three lawn bowls club on Bribie each offering top class locations for a social or competitive game or a meal and a drink. The Bribie Island Bowls Club is on Welsby Parade, Bongaree. The Bribie Sports Club is home to the Bongaree Bowls Club and is located on Toorbul Street, Bongaree and Solander Lake Bowls Club is on Sunderland Drive, Banksia Beach. The island also has an Indoor Bowls Club located on First Avenue, Bongaree. Basing yourself on Bribie Island then going off for day trips is the best way to see more of this glorious part of Queensland. The Abbey Museum on Old Toorbul Point Road has a world renowned collection of artefacts and is worth a visit as you make your way towards the highway. Once on the highway head south and you can discover the areas around Redcliffe. Moreton Island is accessible from here so head for the Redcliffe Jetty or to Scarborough Marina to find out more about

that. Moreton Island is the second largest sand island in the world. You can go diving or snorkelling around the wrecks to see colourful coral and marine life. If you have your own boat Moreton Island is very easy to get to from Bribie as well. Heading north on the highway from Bribie you are drawn to the Glasshouse Mountains rising from the surrounding landscape. Waterfalls to explore, bushwalks to try and even some rock and mountain climbing can all be done in this area. Galleries, cafes, restaurants, wineries and markets are all around, you can easily spend a day driving around and stopping, before your return trip to Bribie. Further north you can do a day trip to Australia Zoo and maybe even see some of the Irwin family, they are usually at the zoo when school holidays are on. Underwater World is worth a visit at Mooloolaba. It is Queensland’s largest oceanarium and aquarium with new additions always being added. Inland from Bribie Island you will be able to explore some authentic country towns. Bribie offers clubs, hotels, restaurants and takeaways to suit all tastes and accommodation is well catered for too. Accommodation styles include B&Bs, motels, self-contained units and holiday houses. So don’t let the time of year discourage you from visiting Bribie Island. We can always offer you a great array of things to do and we look forward to welcoming you to our island, no matter what the season.

“All these fish have rules about how many you can catch and keep,” say Fisheries Queensland, “if you catch a fish and aren’t sure what species it is, you might unknowingly be doing the wrong thing. There are a few simple tips to help you remember the difference between these fish”. • A large dark spot on the tail distinguishes the dusky flathead from other types of flathead. • Dark blotches on the back and sides set aside adult trumpeter whiting from sand, goldline and northern whiting. • Silver javelin and barred javelin can often be mistaken for pikey bream. Look out for silver javelin which has numerous scattered dark brown to black blotches on the body and dark blotches on the dorsal fins. • Barred javelin unlike silver javelin has vertical bars along their flanks. These bars are comprised of spots and blotches. Javelin also ‘grunt’ when caught, hence the common name ‘grunter bream’. • Bream are completely silver in colour and have no blotches or spots. Bream have a forked tail unlike javelin. Yellowfin bream have yellowwhite anal and pelvic fins. • Juvenile snapper, known as ’squire’, can be mistaken for bream. The upper bodies of snapper vary from pale pink to reddish mostly with bluish spots.

Check the latest rules online at FISH AND TIPS: Pumicestone Passage’s extensive tidal wetlands are www.deedi.qld.gov.au and go to Fisheries. essential breeding areas for many fish, crabs and prawns. Flathead, bream, whiting, tailor and mangrove jack are often caught around Bribie Island. Many people catch sand and mud crabs during the summer months. The passage is part of the Moreton Bay Marine Park. Recreational fishing activities are permitted in the marine park, except in the Tripcony Bight – Long Island and Westaways Creek marine national park zones. Fisheries Queensland is asking Bribie Island visitors and residents to polish up on fish identification before they cast a line. THE PUMICESTONE PASSAGE

BRIBIE ISLAND BOAT CHARTERS

Matthew Flinders named the Pumicestone Passage, the Pumicestone River. Pumicestone; for the alluvial Pumicestone that lined the shores of the Passage, and river; because he never made it through to Caloundra, he only made it through to the middle of the passage to what is known as the Skids, The Narrows and the W’s.

Between Bribie Island and the mainland lies the Pumicestone Passage. This magical place is a must for visitors to Bribie Island. Bribie Island Boat Charters operates in the Passage, hiring BBQ Boats and Fishing Boats for cruising, swimming, fishing and enjoying one of the most picturesque bodies of water in Queensland.

It’s a very shallow section where the two tides meet up. Because he didn’t make it up to Caloundra he thought the river went up into the ranges and therefore the name Pumicestone River was given to it.

The BBQ Boats and Fishing Boats are clean, safe and comfortable, with cushioned seats and shade canopies. The BBQ Boats also have a toilet, sink and bench area, with drinking water, and a gas BBQ. Life jackets are supplied.

Lieutenant James Cook sailed up past Moreton Island and Bribie Island on the 17th May 1770. He saw the Glass House Mountains in the distance and named them the Glass House Peaks, they reminded him of the glass factories back home. There are 14 mountains in the Glass House group, including the five main mountains that you can see from the passage and Bribie. The area of Bribie called White Patch is where Matthew Flinders beached the Norfolk - his 33ft sloop that he sailed around the world in. He put the vessel on the beach here to do some work on it and spent 15 days in the waterways of the passage. The Banksia Beach area is named after the banksia trees found in the area. These trees were named after Sir Joseph Banks, the botanist on the Endeavour with Lieutenant James Cook. The interesting feature about this area and what has put this Marine Park on the world stage is the inter-tidal feeding banks. These are the mud banks, sand banks and weed banks that feed all the migratory birds. The Marine Park is a member of the RAMSAR site which is the biggest environmental site in the world, one hundred countries are signed up to it for the protection of these feeding banks. The Park is also a member of the CAMBA and JAMBA treaty, which is the Chinese and Japanese migratory bird treaty. The Moreton Bay Marine Park and the Pumicestone Passage makes up to 30% of the East Coast of Australia’s inter-tidal feeding banks, so you can see how important it is that these feeding banks are preserved.

Fishing is great fun - flathead in the creeks, whiting on the sandbars, snapper under the bridge and bream just about everywhere! Bribie Island Boat Charters can hire fishing gear and sells bait and ice for your day out. Being on the water gives you the best chance of spotting dolphins and sea-turtles. Both bottle-nose and Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins are common in Pumicestone Passage and green sea-turtles are regularly sighted. There is a resident population of dugong in Moreton Bay Marine Park. This placid mammal feeds on the sea-grass beds of Pumicestone Passage. There are some great swimming spots - pull up in your BBQ Boat or Fishing Boat and the kids can chase the soldier crabs along the sand. Further north are landings, such as Mission Point, that can only be reached by boat. Being on a BBQ or Fishing Boat also allows you to enjoy the abundant bird-life in and around the Pumicestone Passage, especially during the summer migratory-bird season. With the distinctive Glasshouse Mountains in the distance providing a perfect backdrop, journeying up the Pumicestone Passage in a Bribie Island Boat Charters BBQ or Fishing Boat will become a lasting memory from your Bribie holiday. See ad on page 6.

Every year five to six million birds fly in from Europe to avoid the European winter and spend the summer here. They arrive here in September and October and leave around March and April. They fly down from Northern China, Mongolia and Siberia and the Arctic Circle. Fifty to sixty thousand birds take up residence here in the Marine Park. These feeding banks are important to these birds, they lose 30% of their body weight on the flight out from Asia or Europe so they are hungry by the time they get here, and need a good rest. They fly up to 25,000km in a year and up to 6000km in one go. Bribie’s Marine Park is the smallest estuarine area in the world that has a permanent population of dugongs. It’s believed that 8 to 10 live here permanently in the Marine Park. Back in 1995 there was a dugong stranded up in the mangroves on Parrot Island. The tide went out and he got stranded in the roots, and they had to get the Park Rangers out to put a harness on him and tow him out into deeper water. He was estimated to weight over 360 kilos. They grow up to 480 kilos and can live for 70 plus years. There are two types of dolphins that frequent the passage, the Bottlenose dolphin which is dark grey in colour and has a fairly prominent doorsill fin. Also the Indo Pacific dolphin that has more of a hump than a doorsill, and is fairly light in colour. They come into the Marine Park in pods of 8 or 10, normally to feed. Two main types of turtles also frequent the passage. The Loggerhead Turtle, and the Greenback Turtle. There are a couple of other species that come into the passage but they are the most common. The 2000 hectares of mangroves in the Passage are pivotal to the health of the waterway. These mangroves filter a lot of toxins out of the water and offer a fantastic breeding ground for fish and birdlife. One hectare of mangroves sheds 7 tonnes of foliage a year which lays in the marine park floor to rot this in turn starts the food chain. www.bribie.com.au

VOLUNTEER MARINE RESCUE, BRIBIE ISLAND The unit arose from the Bribie Island Boating and Fishing Club, which in 1970 assumed responsibility for assisting mariners in distress. It became Bribie Island Air Sea Rescue in 1982 and changed its name to VMR Bribie Island Incorporated in March 1997. Volunteer Marine Rescue Bribie Island, situated on Sylvan Beach Esplanade, Bellara has, over the last couple of decades, gained a very good reputation in Boating/Sailing circles as well as with local organisations on the Island and Mainland. Our objective is to “promote safety” and to “save lives”. One of the many ways we promote safety is by inviting members of the public to participate in “courses” at the Base. Throughout the year, we have a variety of Courses for members, which include navigation, safety at sea, and First Aid. We are mostly self-funded and rely heavily on community support for membership and donations. Our Base is manned every day of the year from 6am to 6pm with experienced Radio Operators, waiting for you to “LOG ON AND LOG OFF”. We have rostered crews on every weekend and on public holidays. To cover the weekdays, a ‘stand-by’ crew that can be on the water in 20 minutes to assist with an emergency or a breakdown is available. Our After Hours number 3408 7596 or 0417 610 809 is for emergencies only. With the help of grants and community donations we have been able to equip our vessels, with the latest technology in rescue, being the FLIR (Forward Looking Imaging Radar) - allowing crews to see in the dark. How it works is that everything emits a thermal image and you can detect this with the FLIR; also the acquisition of the Jason’s Cradle which enables crews to retrieve people from the water in a horizontal

Our area of operations covers 500sq Nmiles. 2Nm South of Caloundra, 10Nm East of Moreton Island, South to Redcliffe, including Pumicestone Passage, and anywhere else under the direction of the Water Police. Our crews are all well trained and have to undergo competency tests, pass all training modules and hold a current First Aid Certificate, which has to be renewed every 3 years. CPR has to be revised every year. The Base holds ongoing “training modules” and “refreshers” for any crew member that wishes to participate. We would like to encourage everyone to join VMR. You do not need to own a boat. You can become part of the team and help with fundraising, join Crews or be Radio Operators. As little as one day a month or a couple of hours a month on roster. There are many areas in our organisation where maybe YOU could help.

OUR COMMUNITY.

Excerpt from an interview with a Museum Curator The story of Michael Strong (below), Senior Curator, the Abbey Museum of Art and Archaeology. Michael tell me a little about your life: I was born into the Abbey Community in Limassol, Cyprus, and came with them to Australia living first in Bondi, then Blackheath, NSW before moving to Caboolture in 1965. While in Bondi as a 6-7 year old, I remember these large wooden crates arriving which contained hundreds of objects — paintings, sculptures, weapons, jewellery and manuscripts — from the Abbey Folk Park’s collection. For some reason it was incredibly important for me, even as a young child, to be there to see them unpacked. When the Abbey Community moved to Queensland I worked on the farm milking cows, looking after the pigs, picking tomatoes and pumpkins. But my interest in the collection did not fade and when I was sitting watching pigs farrowing late at night, I was reading books on Greek redfigure pottery and architecture, Etruscan paintings, Indian miniatures or Aztec sculpture, as a way to start to get a better understanding of what was in the collection. How big was the collection? The collection was still largely packed away in the wooden crates and we had no idea of what had survived from the Abbey Folk Park. So, I started to research the collections and write a catalogue based on a series of hand written check-lists that had been left behind by John Ward, the founder of the Abbey Folk Park in New Barnet, UK, when he was acquiring the objects. In 1980, we were successful in getting a large grant from the Utah Foundation and this was the beginnings of the present day Abbey Museum. There are approximately 850 objects on display in the Museum, this is about one-fifth of the collection. Tell me a little about the wonderful collection of stained glass. The stained glass is probably one of the jewels in the Abbey Museum collection. It really is magnificent. It includes a number of internationally significant pieces. There are two main themes. One is the armorial glass that comes from the mortuary chapel of the Shirley family at Ettington. And the medieval stained glass panels originally from Winchester Cathedral – the world heritage cathedral in England.

One of them — depicting the Angel Gabriel — has been called the most important archaeological find in stained glass in the last fifty years by Sarah Brown – the head of English Heritage – so it is wonderful to have such important pieces here in Australia. Tell me about the Medieval Festival! The Festival is 30 years old next year. When it started in 1989, it was a little experiment where we had thirty re-enactors perform for three hundred patrons. At that time it was thought the event wouldn’t last more than a couple of years. It is now an annual fundraiser for the Museum attracting over 25,000 visitors and participants. What is the future of the Abbey Museum? I think museums need to become entrepreneurial in order to survive; just like John Ward’s Folk Park concept. We hold the Medieval Festival to raise funds for the Museum and we are exploring the feasibility of building a medieval village “living museum” as a way of remaining sustainable into the future. The Abbey Museum, with its international collection, doesn’t fit comfortably in the normal category of Australian museums. This makes it challenging to obtain grants or funding from levels of government and so we look for support and donations from companies and individuals who see value in what our Museum does. OUR COMMUNITY.

LOCAL REMINDERS OF PRE-EUROPEAN CULTURE AND COMMUNITY

Bribie Island has been occupied for a very long time before European settlement.

The Toorbul Point bora ground is also just 5km inland from the fish trap and other bora rings have been recorded on Bribie Island itself.

Local Aboriginal people and others, visiting from inland or further along the coast, enjoyed the beauty and abundance of the Bribie area and actively cultivated and harvested its resources.

People gathered in this area to visit relatives or hold ceremonies and made camp at Sandstone Point or on the banks of Ningi Creek.

Shell middens can be found at Sandstone Point, on the mainland. These stand as testimony to the many life, generations of people of the First Nation, meeting together and sharing food and culture.

Some of the group would travel to the Toorbul Point fish traps when they needed supplies of fish. They would spend a short time there, creating dinnertime camps, and then return to the main camp to share the fish they had trapped. Studies by the University of Queensland found first-hand evidence of use of these fish traps, by Aboriginal people, as recently as the 1930s. A local Bribie Islander provided first hand evidence to Queensland University about how Aboriginal people of the area used the Toorbul Point fish traps. He wrote: For about ten years from the mid 1930s, Roland Birt was oysterman at Toorbul Point, a very big man who answered to the nick name of "Clinker"; he and his brother, of similar size, were at one time stokers on the Koopa(vessel used to bring holiday visitors to Bribie Island). Clinker's wife (Ann) was an aboriginal from Moreton Island; she often referred to the area between Bulwer and Comboyuro (on Moreton Island) as "Gumpun", we assumed this to be home ground.

Sandstone Point fish trap. All Aboriginal sites are protected by law. It is illegal to disturb or damage material evidence relating to indigenous habitation, including middens, fish traps or ceremonial sites. This site is the largest excavated shell midden in south-east Queensland and has given great insight into past Aboriginal life. This part of the coast supported relatively high population densities of Aboriginal people up to the time of European settlement. As part of traditional life, there were occasional gatherings of large numbers of people around the Toorbul Point area and, in particular, at the huge midden complex at Sandstone Point. The remnants of fish traps that were used by the local Aboriginal people can still be found at Toorbul Point. Not far from the large shell midden complex at Sandstone Point, you can see a continuous wall made of local rock which enclosed an area approximately 70m by 35m.

Until recently the whole of Toorbul Point was owned by the Clark family, and extensive oyster leases were worked off the foreshore, where there was also a large native fish trap which the late Mr Colin Clark saw to it that this was well looked after and maintained. He also adopted the same attitude towards the bora rings complex(ceremonial grounds) on Toorbul in the bush about half way in from Cook's Point. Ann Birt was small, very active, born probably about 1880, quiet, almost retiring. During the mullet and tailor seasons, if a shoal was close in, Mrs Birt would row out, trailing a bunch of Bribie pine, torulosa, she-oak and vanilla lily, this she maintained was necessary to attract the porpoises (dolphins). Very doubtful, but occasionally the porpoises would follow the dinghy and frighten a portion of the shoal in to the trap. This exercise had to be performed on a falling tide; when it fully receded, there would still be a couple of feet in the trap, with the top of the rock enclosure just awash, the fish were then easily caught with either scoop or cast nets. The purpose of siting this trap in an oyster area was obviously to hold up bream & flathead between tides, both feed on young culture; with a seasonal school or two of mullet & tailor - with porpoise assistance as a bonus. Clinker Birt died of cancer in the late 1940s, and Mrs Birt lived at Kennigo St in the (Fortitude)Valley until her death a few years later. "Old Salt" 26.5.1985. Editorial by Robyn Tomkins

OUR COMMUNITY. During any such emergency, the latest information from the Weather Bureau, Regional Council and emergency services, including the police, fire services and the SES is broadcast throughout the day and night with specially trained personnel at the station collating and disseminating information and advice to listeners. The focus is always on the local situation within the Moreton Bay Regional Council area that does not always receive adequate coverage from Brisbane based radio stations. Local residents are also encouraged to contact the station with their own updated information that can be passed on to other listeners. In times of major emergencies, Council and disaster management crews are offered direct access to the station’s main studios to broadcast directly to residents. This is particularly important should the need arise for evacuations. It is imperative in any natural disaster or emergency that households always have a torch and battery operated radio handy because of potential power failures.

RADIO 101.5FM – YOUR LOCAL LIFELINE IN ANY EMERGENCY Over the past 28 years, local radio station 101.5FM has become the main source of daily news and information for residents and holidaymakers on Bribie Island and surrounding areas. It broadcasts 24/7 from its studios in the main town square of Caboolture to a potential audience of almost 200,000 listeners within the local region. With strong support from business and the wider community, programs focus very much on local news, happenings and events. Each morning, boaties on Bribie can tune in for the latest weather conditions predicted for the Passage and the deeper and more unpredictable waters of Moreton Bay. Reports cover predicted swells, wind shifts and even include updates on what and where fish are biting, all supplied by Bribie’s local fishing experts. For those less fortunate residents heading to work, regular peak hour traffic reports are provided daily throughout the breakfast program and afternoon “Drive” with updated reports on any traffic snarls or accidents on the roads. These include the key arterials including the Bruce Highway, Bribie Road, Morayfield Road and the Gateway for those heading to the airport and Gold Coast. These regular reports also include any delays to train and bus services. Radio station 101.5fm is perhaps best known as a potential life-line for local residents when the inevitable emergency or natural disaster occurs such as cyclones, fires and floods.

As well as on-air information, 101.5fm also has an extensive and informative online website regularly updated with local news and information at www.1015fm.com.au or via facebook.com/101.5FM

OUR COMMUNITY.

WHY WE LOVE THE WATERS OF BRIBIE ISLAND From the beautiful ocean-side beach of Woorim, around the tip of Red Beach and north through the Pumicestone Passage, Bribie Island is all about water. This charming sand island is surrounded by the Moreton Bay Marine Park, home to some of the most fascinating sea animals in the world. Woorim has the closest surf beach north of Brisbane and is patrolled by lifesavers in the summer months. Obtaining a permit allows fourwheel drive travel several kilometres north from Woorim along the sand, which stretches up to the tip of Bribie Island, overlooking Caloundra. Along the way, check out the gun-emplacement bunkers that operated as Brisbane’s defence against invasion in WW2. South of the surf club, the beach curves around Skirmish Point. Some say it was here that Matthew Flinders and his friend Bongaree first met Bribie’s Aboriginal people, but it is more rightly held to be the point where Flinders’ vessel, the “Norfolk”, anchored. From there the crew took a row-boat around Red Beach and into the Pumicesone Passage where an interesting visit took place on the shore where the village of Bongaree now sits. Buckley’s Hole Environmental Park is an artificial freshwater lake near South Point, which can be reached via the beach or along a track from the Boulevard. A quiet wait in the bird hide will usually be rewarded by sightings of local and visiting shorebirds – spoonbills and kites, honeyeaters and moorhens. Over 190 species of birds enjoy the sanctuary of Buckley’s Hole. North of the bridge, Pumicestone Passage extends about 30 kilometres to Caloundra. This magical place is a must for visitors to Bribie Island. Whether beside it or on it, you cannot fail to be impressed by the views the Passage affords. You can take a motor-boat up the channel, sail, kayak, or go on a cruise – all opportunities to take pleasure in one of the most picturesque bodies of water in Queensland. Fishing is great

fun and the variety is huge - flathead in the creeks, whiting on the sandbars, snapper under the bridge. Some say that keeping the fish ruins a good day’s fishing! Being on the water gives you the best chance of spotting dolphins and sea-turtles. Both bottle-nose and Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins are common in Pumicestone Passage, often seen in groups, sometimes schooling fish together for a feast. The green turtle is the one most often seen in the waters around Bribie Island. If you spot a green turtle once, you may have to wait a while to see it again – they usually surface every ten to thirty minutes, but can stay under water for hours at a time! The elusive dugong is listed as vulnerable to extinction, but there is a reasonably stable resident population in Moreton Bay Marine Park. The dugong is not everyone’s idea of beautiful, but sailors-of-old saw them as visions of mermaids. It is paler grey than a dolphin and has no dorsal fin; its upper lip is swollen and trunk-like (in fact its closest land cousin is the elephant!). This placid mammal feeds on the sea-grass beds of Pumicestone Passage. Sea-grass is precious to the dugong - take care to avoid damaging it. More often than not, you first catch sight of a dugong out of the corner of your eye, and it is gone before you realise what you have just seen. Be patient; wait and look towards where he is heading – if you are lucky, a second sighting is your reward! Banksia Beach and White Patch are great swimming spots; pull up in your boat and the kids can chase the soldier crabs along the sand. Further north are camp-sites along the shore; some, such as Mission Point, can only be reached by boat, but are worth the effort. The distinctive Glasshouse Mountains in the distance provide a perfect backdrop to sunset, bringing to a close yet another wonderful day on the waters of Bribie Island. It also suits musical events and private functions, complemented by an adjoining commercial kitchen, hire of which is included in package rates. The Seasoned Outdoor Gallery, the only one of its kind in southeast Queensland, features special whimsical and practical garden art pieces to suits tastes from quirky to the more conventional. Come walk in this peaceful, garden courtyard to check them out.

You could also secure an extended feature wall of your art as our Artist of the Month. For hirers: Spacious, airy studios offer experienced and would-be artists opportunity to join groups to learn, share, laugh, cement friendships, participate in workshops and gain inspiration and confidence. Potters, painters, leadlighters, mosaic artists, pastellists, watercolourists, sewers, knitters and quilters fill these spaces every week and always welcome newcomers. An attractive hexagonal-shaped Boardroom to hire suits meetings, conferences and classes, with catering packages available on request. Gardeners, photographers, coloured pencil artists, card makers, scrapbookers, Yoga and meditation practitioners and other community groups currently meet here. For visitors: The Matthew Flinders Gallery has a changing and diverse program of contemporary exhibitions featuring local, state and national artists. The works are very reasonably priced for the calibre of talent they represent. For a gift that says “Bribie’, come to our BICAS artisans’ gift shop, which features a breathtaking and changing array of special objects unique to the island. Rapid turnover ensures there are new surprises waiting for you every visit. Delicious pod coffee is available at the Centre. With prior notice, morning or afternoon tea and lunch can be arranged from $6.50 per head and we cater for bus groups, school tours and social clubs. BRIBIE ISLAND

CRADLE SITE OF QUEENSLAND Written by Barry Clark, Bribie Island Historical Society “Pumicestone Passage and Bribie Island contains more History, written and unwritten, than any other place in Queensland.” This is a quote by the late Stan Tutt, local Historian and journalist, and this article tells about a few of the events that shaped the history of both Queensland and Australia. When James Cook first sailed the east coast of this “Great South Land” in 1770 he sighted and named the remarkable “Glasshouses”, but did not approach this coast or see any islands or bays. When the first fleet of convicts and settlers arrived in Sydney Harbour 18 years later in 1788 they faced the challenge of survival in the early years. With no understanding of this new land, or that it was a huge island continent, early exploration sought to find rivers that would give access to the interior. Eleven years later in 1799 a young Matthew Flinders was despatched by the Governor to explore the area of Cape Morton and Glasshouse Bay that Cook had marked on his charts. Flinders came in the sloop “Norfolk” with a small crew, his faithful cat “Trim” and an aboriginal companion named “Bongaree”. They were the first to set foot on Bribie Island among the indigenous people who had occupied these lands for many thousands of years. They explored Morton Bay, as James Cook had named it, but failed to find any large river flowing into it. It was a transcription error that put the letter “E” the name Moreton that has been used ever since. Castaway Convicts It was a disastrous event 24 years later that resulted in finding a big river, by the first white people to actually live among the aboriginal people. In 1823 three Sydney convicts were caught in a big storm in a small boat south of Sydney and were lost at sea for several weeks, eventually being washed up virtually dead on a sandy beach. They were saved with the help of several aboriginal groups around the Bay who took them over to the mainland. What they did not know was that they had landed on Moreton Island over 1000 klms from where they imagined they would be, somewhere south of Sydney. After weeks of walking north and crossing a large river, they eventually reached Bribie Island totally exhausted and were cared for by the local people for many months. Believing they were south of Sydney they continued to explore to the north, expecting to see Sydney over the next hill, but always returned exhausted to the comfort and care of the Bribie Island natives. Months later in 1824 it was another explorer John Oxley, again seeking an inland river, who chanced to find them on the beach at Bribie Island.

The discovery of Gold at Gympie was a great boost to the struggling and bankrupt new colony and led to new settlements along the way including Caboolture on the river crossing. Aboriginal Reserve Conflict, disease and hostility had rapidly impacted the indigenous people of this entire area, and in 1877 a decision to establish the Colony’s first Aboriginal Reserve on Bribie Island, for the few remaining disparate aboriginal people, first brought attention to this small island. This Government initiative was short lived, but a few years later a Mission School for children operated briefly at Mission Point. There may have been as many as 600 of the Bribie “Joondoobarrie” people when Flinders first came in 1799, but in less than 100 years the last of their people, Kal-Ma-Kuta died. Her memorial is now in the central reserve of the Bribie Island road, near where she had lived for many years with her white husband Fred Turner and 6 children, and a commemorative stone is at Turners Camp road on the approach to the island. Early settlers around Moreton Bay and Pumicestone Passage operated Oyster leases, Timber Mills, Fish Canneries and cattle grazing. By the turn of the Century there were no permanent residents on Bribie Island and a notable Government official, Archibald Meston, who made brief exploratory visit in 1891declared, “Bribie Island is one of the meanest pieces of country in Australia, a howling desert of tea-tree swamps, rank aquatic vegetation and unimaginable cussedness". The next step in the history of this island is therefore quite remarkable. A group of Brisbane businessmen who became Directors of the Brisbane Tug & Steamship Company decided to turn this island into a Tourist destination. It started in a small way bringing people in small boats to fish and hunt here, and in 1911 they had a large Steamship built in UK and sailed out here to open up the “Steamship Excursion” industry from Brisbane to Bribie Island. They leased land and built a Jetty for their Steamship “Koopa” making regular trips to the island for very basic camping and fishing holidays. It proved hugely popular and the new settlement named Bongaree was filled with white canvas tents at every weekend and holiday. Some basic buildings were constructed, including small holiday huts on the beach, a few cottages, the first shop and guesthouses. By the 1920’s this quiet island had become a tourist haven for Brisbane, long before the Gold Coast and Surfers Paradise. Although it was a 3 hour Steamship trip from Brisbane, and a long hot walk along sand tracks to the Ocean Beach, it was the closest surf beach to Brisbane.

They showed him the big river that they had crossed months before and this led to a decision to establish a new Moreton Bay penal settlement, initially at Redcliffe, but soon relocated to the present site of Brisbane. For the next 15 years the Penal Colony housed some of the worst convicts relocated from Sydney, but by 1839 convict transportation was stopped and free settlers were allowed to move in and explore this area. Twenty years later in 1859 Queensland, still sparsely settled and largely unexplored, was declared a new Colony of the British Empire and separated from New South Wales. 28

HISTORY OF BRIBIE. Into this growing scene came Bribie’s most famous resident. The eccentric and recluse artist Ian Fairweather, who had enlisted in two World Wars, painted in Bali and China, and at the age of 60 was seeking solitude and isolation for his unique and creative art. Ian lived in a grass hut on this island for 21 years, largely misunderstood by most people, but created his most inspiring works which now hang in Galleries around the world.

First car on Bribie Island After twelve years of regular steamships to Bribie the first road on the island was built in 1924 from Bongaree to the Ocean Beach. The first car was brought to Bribie in 1919 by the owner of the first store, long before there was even a road to drive it on, involving a two day overland trip on bush and beach tracks, and then floated across the Passage to Bribie. Tourist Island Resort Basic trucks took people from the Jetty to the Surf beach and tourist facilities started to develop with Kiosks, Guesthouses and Shops serving their basic needs. This was the golden era for Bribie in the years before the great Depression when several ships unloaded thousands of passengers at the Jetty every weekend and holiday and more people camped in canvas tents along the foreshore than the entire population of Caboolture Shire at that time. By the 1930’s the resident population was still less than 200, but the many tourists were enjoying increased accommodation, plentiful fishing and the abundant wildlife and wildflowers. Bribie was known as “A Zoo without a Fence”. The first Hotel was built at Woorim in 1939 just as World War 2 was declared and the island became a strategic defence location for the Port of Brisbane and Eastern Australia. Forts were constructed on the North and South of the island with large Guns and undersea detection cables laid on the sea bed across to Moreton island.

Fairweather at his grass hut

His paintings done on scrap cardboard and plywood from the nearby tip, now sell for millions.

Life on Bribie continued generally quiet and peaceful until the construction of a Bridge from the mainland in 1963. When it opened there was a substantial Toll to pay to cross it, which lasted for 12 years until the bridge was paid for. This had major impact on the anticipated growth of the island, but in the 56 years since then the population and development has progressively grown. Bribie is still a unique place, and its character can still be seen in the history that has shaped it over the years. Heritage Plaques , signs and walk brochures available at the Museum and Visitor Info Centre inform residents and visitors about this rich history, and we hope that future generations appreciate and respect those whose footsteps we walk in. Visit the Seaside Museum or read much more on the Historical Society blog site http://bribieislandhistory.blogspot.com or contact them on bribiehistoricalsociety@gmail.com

Most residents were evacuated, visitors were restricted and the island was occupied by Army and Navy troops. In the darkest days of the War, after the attack on Pearl Harbour and the Hospital Ship “Centaur” torpedoed just off the coast, Japanese invasion of Australia seemed inevitable. Defence of Brisbane and Moreton Bay was the priority. Thousands of Australian and American troops were camped at Sandstone Point, and the ocean beaches of Bribie were training grounds for Beach landing before troops were sent to War in the islands. When the War ended life slowly returned to normal on Bribie with the advantage of a military road having been built from Caboolture and a Car ferry now operating across the Passage. The motor car was gaining popularity as an alternative to the slow steamship from Brisbane. The road trip was very rough and the Ferry very small, but progressively the excitement of the steamships declined. Bridge to the Mainland By the early 1950’s the Koopa made its last trip, replaced by the growing popularity of the Motor Car and Ferry to the island. . There followed another period of growth and development with Bribie being regarded as real holiday destination with Electricity, Movies being shown, Skating Rink and Dance halls operating, and many Cafes and Shops opening up.
