LIMELITE RENOVATING PLASTER

Description

Limelite Renovating Plaster is a lightweight, breathable fibre reinforced renovating plaster that controls and manages moisture movement in traditional and damp buildings. Limelite Renovating Plaster works with the fabric of a building, letting walls breathe whilst providing a quality, durable finish that protects and performs for years to come.

This breathability enables substrate to dry naturally, meaning Limelite Renovating Plaster can provide a fast and effective solution in both domestic and commercial properties for flood damage remediation and heritage restoration.

Limelite Renovating Plaster can be used as a rapid drying, easy to apply alternative to traditional lime based plasters without compromising the flexibility and breathability of the substrate. With a drying time of just 24 hours per coat, Limelite Renovating Plaster can be used to dramatically reduce project times when compared to traditional lime materials which can take months to dry. The plaster can be applied to both modern and traditional substrates, including masonry, block, stone and wooden lath.

Uses

Limelite Renovating Plaster can be used to replace existing lime based plaster or as part of a new plaster system in both modern and traditional buildings and is an ideal solution for flood damage repair or flood damage prevention.

Fire Resistance

Limelite Renovating Plaster is a non-combustible product (as defined in BS 476 : Part 4), and can be designated Class O in accordance with the requirements of the National Building Regulations for use as a surface finishing material.

Salt Resistance

Limelite Renovating Plaster contains salt inhibitors to prevent efflorescence and salt transfer. In areas of heavy contamination,heavy contamination, such as chimney breasts, Limelite Easy-Bond slurry primer should be used prior to the application of Limelite Renovating Plaster.

Compatibility

Limelite Renovating Plaster is compatible with most building materials. Lime plaster, however, is not compatible with gypsum, and therefore Limelite Renovating Plaster must not be used with gypsum finishing plaster or gypsum plasterboard.

Bituminous coatings and traces of gypsum should be removed before plastering.

M20 Plastered/Rendered/Roughcast coatings • 330 PROPRIETARY LIME : SAND Limelite Renovating Plaster should always be used with a skim coat of Limelite High Impact Finishing Plaster.

Application

Solid substrates – Brick, block, stone etc.

Substrates should be cleaned and any loose or friable material removed. Traces of gypsum plaster, bitumen or other materials that could cause a barrier to adhesion must be removed.

Substrates should be primed with Limelite Easy-Bond and the first coat of plaster should be applied once the priming coat is tacky.

The plaster should be applied in coats between 7-15mm and a minimum of 24 hours is required between coats. A suitable horizontal scratch should be applied between each coat for a key.

Technical performance is derived by laboratory testing at 20°C.

Once the desired thickness has been achieved Limelite High Impact Finish should be applied as a skim coat. Note that gypsum finishing plasters are not suitable for use with Limelite Renovating Plaster.

Mixing

For best results Limelite Renovating Plaster should be mixed in a clean mixing vessel using a mechanical mixer such as a slow-speed drill and paddle mixer.

Fill bucket with approximately 12.5 litres of cool, clean water.

Add 25kg of dry powder to the water and mix for 2-3 minutes until a smooth, homogeneous working consistency is achieved.

Allow to rest for 3 - 5 minutes, then re-mix back to consistency adding small amounts of water if necessary.

The lath should be cleaned and repaired to a reasonable condition. An initial coat of approximately 6mm of Limelite Renovating Plaster should be pushed into the lath to create a solid backing. This should then immediately receive a further coat of Limelite Renovating Plaster which should be used to level.

The plaster should receive a suitable horizontal scratch and be left to cure for a minimum of 24 hours before applying Limelite High Impact Finishing Plaster. Note that gypsum finishing plasters are not suitable for use with Limelite Renovating Plaster.

Decoration

Limelite plasters can be decorated 24 hours after application of Limelite High Impact Finishing Plaster. Paints used must be breathable, such as mineral based or water based paints.

Wallpaper and tiling is not recommended due to the non-porous nature of the finish. However, if wallpaper or tiling is used the moisture content of the plaster must be checked and deemed suitable by the supplier of the decorative finishes before application.

Users are advised to wear protective clothing when using Limelite Renovating Plaster including face mask, goggles, gloves and overalls when handling, mixing and applying this product. Skin contact should be avoided,and any eye contact should be dealt with promptly by irrigation with clean water.

Dry powders should be disposed of as advised on the material safety datasheet.

Tools and equipment can easily be cleaned using water.

Cleaning of tools and equipment should be carried out as soon as possible after application.

Packaging & Storage

Limelite Renovating Plaster is available in 25kg paper bags, palletised and shrink wrapped.

Palletised Limelite Renovating Plaster should be stored in cool dry areas clear of the ground, sheeted or under cover and stacked not more than two pallets high. The product should be used on a first in – first out basis. Shelf life is 6 months’ subject to temperature and humidity.

Individual bags of Limelite Renovating Plaster should be stored in sealed original packaging in a dry location at temperatures between 5°C and 30°C. Avoid exposure to water, frost or heat – extremes in temperatures and high humidity will lead to a reduced shelf life.

LIMELITE HIGH IMPACT FINISHING PLASTER

Description

Limelite High Impact Finishing Plaster is a breathable and durable finishing plaster designed to provide a quality finish over Limelite backing plasters. The finishing plaster can also be used over lime backgrounds, sand/cement mixes and existing gypsum plaster.

Limelite High Impact Finishing Plaster can be used as part of the Limelite Renovating Plaster System, which can be applied directly to damp walls or as part of flood remediation works.

Note that gypsum plaster and plasterboard is not breathable, and therefore the benefits of High Impact Finish will be negated when used over gypsum backgrounds.

The plaster dries to an off-white, matte finish and can be left unpainted for a natural look if desired.

When applied as part of the Limelite Renovating Plaster system, Limelite High Impact Finishing Plaster is ideal for use in heritage restoration, renovation and damp environments.

Compatibility Limelite High Impact Finishing Plaster is compatible with most plaster and render backgrounds, including sand and cement, lime, and gypsum. Note, however, that gypsum plaster is not suitable for damp environments and Limelite High Impact Finishing Plaster should be considered decorative only if applied onto gypsum backgrounds.

Application

For use as part of the Limelite Renovating Plaster System Limelite High Impact Finishing Plaster should be applied in a single coat of between 2-5mm thick. The plaster should be left to set for 90 minutes before using stainless steel trowels to level. Note that Limelite High Impact Finishing Plaster has a matt finish and should not be overworked. Do not polish.

For use over existing plaster finishes Existing plaster should be clean, level and in good condition.

The wall should be primed with Limelite Easy-Bond and Limelite High Impact Finishing Plaster should be applied once the primer is tacky. Limelite High Impact Finishing Plaster should be applied in a single coat of between 2-5mm thick. The plaster should be left to set for 90 minutes before using stainless steel trowels to level. Note that Limelite High Impact Finishing Plaster has a matt finish and should not be overworked.

For use over plasterboard Due to the high suction of plasterboard, it is recommended that a mist coat of dilute acrylic primer (3:1 Water: Primer) is applied to the plasterboard prior to the application of Limelite High Impact Finishing Plaster. Apply the Limelite High Impact Plaster onto the plasterboard while the primer is still tacky.

Decoration

Limelite plasters can be decorated 24 hours after application of Limelite High Impact Finishing Plaster. Paints used must be breathable, such as mineral based or water based paints.

Description

Limelite Whitewall One Coat Plaster is a moisture resistant, durable plaster designed to be applied using the same methods as traditional backing plaster and finished like a first class finishing plaster.

Limelite Whitewall One Coat Plaster provides a white, hard durable surface which does not need to be decorated and is highly resistant to impact damage.

Limelite Whitewall One Coat Plaster is not suitable for application onto plasterboard.

Uses

Limelite Whitewall One Coat Plaster is designed for use on cavity drain membranes and solid substrates, such as brick, block and stone.

The moisture resistance of the plaster makes it ideal for use with cavity drain membrane systems and tanking systems in underground and humid environments, such as basements, leisure centres and underground rail stations.

Mixing

Description

Limelite Easy Bond is a pre-blended, salt resistant primer designed for use with the Limelite Plaster range to aid adhesion and control suction. The use of Limelite Easy Bond will provide a key to smooth substrates and provide resistance to sulphate attack.

Uses

When applied as part of the Limelite Renovating Plaster System, Limelite Easy Bond is ideal for use in heritage restoration, renovation projects and damp environments.

Limelite Easy Bond is salt resistant and ideal for use in areas likely to be contaminated with salt, such as underground areas and historic chimney breasts.

Features • High bond strength • Rapid drying • Easy to apply • Salt resistant.

Mixing

5kg of Limelite Easy Bond should be mixed with 2.5 litres of clean, cool water. Once mixed, Limelite Easy Bond will give a working time of 15 minutes. Only mix the amount of material that can be applied in time.

The performance characteristics of Limelite Easy Bond are dependent on temperature – higher or lower temperatures will result in reduced or extended setting times, respectively.

Application

Limelite Easy Bond should be brushed onto the substrate around 15 minutes before applying the first plaster coat.

Limelite Easy Bond can also be applied by spray machine for covering larger areas faster.

Limelite Easy Bond is factory blended, tested and packaged to quality control procedures in accordance with BS EN ISO 9001.

Description

Limelite Heritage Lime Mortar is a cement-free blend of natural hydrauliclimeandselectedaggregates.Themortarishighlyworkable and combines long term flexibility and breathability with durability.

The mortar is available in two aggregate grades, 4mm grit for standard wider 10mm joints and 2mm for thin joint work, in a range of six colours. Both mortars are available in two strength types M2.5 and M5.0 - also known as HLM2.5 & HLM5.0. M2.5 is a medium strength lime mortar known as moderate mix and typically used for most building works and masonry types, brick, block, stone. M5.0 is high strength lime mortar known as eminent mix where a higher level of durability is required below DPC and in exposed areas such as chimneys, copings or canals/marine work.

It provides faster, harder set and offers a higher resistance to the freeze/thaw cycle along with high resistance to sulphates attack.

Uses

Limelite Heritage Lime Mortars are used for most building works or majority of masonry types in cavity wall construction, applications include brick, block, stonework, rendering and repointing, both externally & internally. The near zero expansion of NHL binders and the elasticity of pure NHL mortars are such that joint free construction is possible.

Yield

One 25kg bag of Limelite Heritage Lime Mortar will lay approximately 25 bricks with a 10mm joint for a single brick skin or 1,000 bricks per tonne of mortar. For re-pointing one 25kg bag will produce approximately 2.8m2 with a 10mm joint. One tonne of Limelite Heritage Lime Mortar will lay a maximum of 1,000 no.

65mm bricks or 600 no. 100mm blocks or 430 no. 140mm blocks.

No wastage factor is allowed.

Mixing

Limelite Heritage Lime Mortars should be mixed using cool, clean water. Limelite Heritage Lime Mortars can be mixed using a conventional Belle type mixer. The inside of the mixer should be wetted and then the contents of the Limelite Heritage Lime Mortar bag should be emptied into the mixer whilst stationary.

Approximately 5 litres of water will be required for each 25 kg bag of Limelite Heritage Lime Mortar.

A small amount of the water should be added to the dry powder and the mixer should be turned on. The water should be allowed to thoroughly disperse into the mix before adding more water.

Continue adding small amounts of water until 4.5 litres has been added allowing the thorough dispersion after each addition.

Allow the mortar to mix for between 5 to 10 minutes and then add the remaining water to achieve the required consistency. Slightly more or less water may be required and the consistency can be checked by placing a small amount of mortar on to the back of a trowel tapping it gently and allowing the mortar to spread evenly across the face, then hold the trowel upside down at which point the mortar should remain stuck. The workability of the mortar can be improved by allowing it to stand and then remixing it just before use.

Description Tarmac Limelite is a range of Natural Hydraulic Limes conforming to EN 459-1. The following products are available: • Tarmac Limelite NHL3.5: A moderately hydraulic lime suitable for general-purpose use for mortar/ pointing/ rendering of most masonry types.

• Tarmac Limelite NHL5.0: An eminently hydraulic lime suitable for use in masonry pointing, capping, foundations, sea defences and new build construction.

Our products contain no additives, mineral additions or Portland cement and are quality assured to EN 459-1: Natural Hydraulic Limes with independent third-party certification.

They also carry a CE Mark.

Uses Tarmac Limelite Natural Hydraulic Lime can be used for both the conservation and renovation of historic buildings, and in new build applications.

Mortars made with natural hydraulic lime gain strength by a combination of hydraulic setting and carbonation. The lower strength and greater permeability of natural hydraulic lime mortars when compared with cement-based mortars is particularly suitable for repairs to older buildings and for traditional style new build.

Natural hydraulic lime mortars have good workability and plasticity and can accommodate some differential movement within the building.

The selection of suitable render mixes, whilst following the guidance for mortars, must also consider the nature of the substrate to which the render will be applied. The type of sand used will also affect the final finish obtained. Guidance on selection of mixes for different substrates is given below:

Many proprietary admixtures (especially air-entraining admixtures) can be used successfully in natural hydraulic lime mortars. However, attention should be paid to the admixture manufacturers instructions and trial mixes are always recommended.

Batching & mixing Sand Sand for lime mortars and renders should be sharp sand, clean and well graded, free of clay or silt. Building (soft) sands, or sands containing clay and silt, can cause excessive shrinkage.

Water Mixing water should be clean and potable. Adding too much water should be avoided as it leads to a reduced strength and an open structure susceptible to frost attack.

Batching Mortars and renders containing natural hydraulic lime should always be batched by volume using batch boxes.

Mixing Sufficient mixing is required to ensure that the lime is uniformly dispersed throughout the mortar or render. Mechanical mixing is preferred and mixing times should be significantly longer than for cement-based mortar. The workability of the mortar improves with increased mixing time (however, avoid over mixing in hot weather). Allowing the mortar to stand in the mixer drum for a short period of time (10-15 mins), before a final remixing will also improve workability.

The use of proprietary admixtures with natural hydraulic lime is not usually necessary as the workability and frost resistance of mortars or renders based on natural hydraulic lime is usually adequate for most applications. In certain circumstances however, the addition of materials such as pozzolans or ground blastfurnace slag may be used to increase the mortar strength. The addition of Blue Circle Hydralime (hydrated lime) can also be used to improve the plastic properties of the mortar and/or reduce its strength. Trial mixes are always recommended.

Storage Natural Hydraulic Lime should be stored in unopened bags clear of the ground in cool dry conditions and should be stacked in a safe and stable manner. Information on the maximum storage period can be found on the bag.

Health & Safety Contact between natural hydraulic lime and body fluids (eg, sweat and eye fluids) may cause irritation, dermatitis or burns. Natural hydraulic lime releases alkali when mixed with water, and the use of protective goggles, gloves and clothing during batching, mixing and application is recommended.

Description

White Peak Lime Putty is made from the finest Buxton quicklime. Matured for a minimum of four months it is ideal for the production of lime mortars, plasters and renders in restoration and conservation work.

Uses

Lime Putty has no hydraulic set (does not set by reaction with water). It hardens by absorbing carbon dioxide from the air. This process is slow and allows for small movements of buildings before the final set. Lime mortar made with lime putty is a very workable material and when hardened is more ductile than cement based mortars.

This allows the building to continue to accommodate small movements. Lime mortars are also “breathable” and this helps in control of moisture in the building fabric. The bond strength of lime mortar is normally weaker than the fabric, which makes it easier to eventually recycle the masonry units.

Mortars

Lime Putty will hold up to three times its volume of clean well-graded sand. No further addition of water is required to make a mortar. We recommend 2.5 to 3 parts by volume of sand for mortar production. Through mixing for up to 20 minutes will ensure a workable product is achieved. For repointing: Remove all mortar to a depth of 1 inch, ensure joints are dampened down, re-mix the mortar to ensure workability.

Pozzolans can be added before remixing if using. Pack joints thoroughly, shape whilst it is in the green state. Ensure mortar dries slowly usually over 2 to 3 days. Dampen down if necessary in hot weather to prevent shrinkage.

Pozzolanic additions Pozzolans such as fly ash or ground blastfurnace slag can be added to give a hydraulic set and increase the strength of lime mortars. Please refer to the supplier’s user guides for addition quantities. Trial mixes should be used on a small test area for suitability before you commence on a large area.

Lime plaster

Background preparation Ensure background is clean and dust free. Dampen down the surface to prevent excessive suction. This can be done several times the day before and repeated just before application.

Dubbing out It may be necessary to apply a dubbing out coat to surfaces with large amounts of damaged joints. Always allow this coat to dry out before keying.

Undercoat/scratch coat Can be applied 3-4 days after the dubbing out coat. It can be made from 1 part White Peak lime putty to 2.5 parts grit sand.

Before use, hair can be added for extra strength at an addition rate of 0.5kg per 100 litres of plaster. Apply plaster in a layer of 10-12mm. If a thicker plaster is required apply two costs.

Allow for sufficient drying times between coats. Key the surface between coats.

Float coat Can be applied 4 -5 days after the undercoat. This is made from 1 part White Peak lime putty to 2.5 parts well-graded sand. Hair can be added to the rate of 0.5kg per 100 litres of plaster. This layer should be no thicker than 11mm. Check for shrinkage in the first 2 days and dampen down the surface if necessary.

Storage On opening the tub it is common for a small amount of liquor to be present on the surface. We recommend this is decanted off before use, and replaced on the surface before resealing tubs containing unused lime putty.

Always store under frost-free conditions. Replace the surface water on top of the putty and tightly reseal any part used tubs.

Lime Putty improves with age. It can be stored unopened for many years. Well-sealed, part used tubs will also be usable for many years.

Health & Safety Handle with care and avoid direct contact with the skin and eyes. Always wear the correct protective clothing and immediately wash any product from the skin and eyes with copious amounts of clean water. Finishing coat Apply unhaired mix 1 part White Peak Lime Putty to 1 part fine silica sand for a fine internal finish. For an external finish 1 part White Peak Lime Putty to 2 parts good quality building sand is suitable.

Plastering and Rendering on timber laths Wet the laths well the day before plastering and again 2 hours before you start. If dry patches appear dampen them down, unless the laths have been treated with fungicide or insecticide in which case they must be allowed to become surface dry before plastering. It is advisable to add hair to every coat except the finishing coat.

The mortar for the first coat must be stiff enough to hold up when laid but pliable enough to squeeze between the laths.

Description

Limelite Brick and Stone Protector is a breathable water-repellent protection cream designed to minimise water ingress into brick, stone, block and concrete substrates.

Limelite Brick and Stone Protector is an emulsion cream, applied by brush, roller or spray and requires only a single coat to form an effective, water-resistant protective barrier.

Uses

Limelite Brick and Stone Protector is ideal for use on brick, block, stone and concrete substrates.

Limelite With proper application it leads to a low water uptake, high penetration depth and a good beading effect. The natural appearance of the treated surface remains unchanged.

Application Instructions

Limelite Brick and Stone Protector is best applied undiluted by brush or roller. Brushes, lambskin rollers or spatulas may be used to smaller areas. Larger areas can be spray applied.

Coverage

One litre of Limelite Brick and Stone Protector will cover approximately 5m2.

Packaging and Storage

Limelite Brick and Stone Protector is available in 10 and 20 litre containers, palletised and shrink wrapped.

Palletised Limelite Brick and Stone Protector should be stored in cool dry areas clear of the ground, sheeted or under cover and stacked not more than two pallets high.

The product should be used on a first in – first out basis.

The product “best before end” date is shown on the product label. Storage beyond the date specified on the label does not necessarily mean that the product is no longer usable. In this case however, the properties required for the intended use must be checked for quality assurance reasons.

Health & Safety

Clean Up

Users are advised to wear goggles, gloves and overalls when handling, mixing and applying Limelite Brick and Stone Protector. In case of mist, spray or aerosol exposure wear suitable personal respiratory protection and a protective suit.

Take up mechanically and dispose of in accordance with the Local Authority. Do not flush away with water. For small amounts absorb with a neutral liquid binding material and dispose of according to local authority regulations. For larger amounts liquid may be recovered using suction devices or pumps. Silicone fluids are slippery, on areas where spillages have been cleaned apply sand or other inert granular material to improve traction.
