FORWARD TOGETHER

Introducing Access & Excellence and its mission.

TEXAN TRAILBLAZERS

Successful alumnus Brent Gough pays it forward, investing in the future of Tarleton State Texans.

ACCESS & EXCELLENCE NEWSLETTER DEBUTS AT TARLETON STATE UNIVERSITY

A new publication that highlights philanthropy, student success and gratitude.

Dear Texans,

We are excited to share the inaugural “Access and Excellence” newsletter for the Texan Excellence Fund. One year ago, TEF launched as the central hub for annual, operational giving at Tarleton State University. In that time, more than $1 million from nearly 1,000 donors has expanded opportunity for students across academics, housing, wellness, leadership and other essential areas that drive success.

Your continued support through TEF is fundamental to strengthening access for deserving students,

including our first-generation Texans. Annual gifts ensure students have the stability they need to thrive, graduate prepared, and lead with purpose beyond campus.

Please see this newsletter as a tribute to the life-changing difference your generosity makes as Tarleton State continues its climb as one of the nation’s premier comprehensive universities.

Together, we thrive,

Dr. James Hurley President

Mayfield College of Engineering students collaborate in the lab, applying classroom knowledge to hands-on projects that prepare them for real-world problem-solving and innovation.

TEXAN TRAILBLAZERS

WHY I GIVE

Meredith and I built our businesses and we've been very blessed. God has given us the ability to give back and to be philanthropic and we just believe Tarleton State is having a lot of success with academics, with athletics and we just wanted to be a part of that.

- BRENT GOUGH '89

IMPACT IN ACTION

Since its launch in December 2024, the Texan Excellence Fund has grown to 914 members, giving more than $1.2 million. Every gift supports scholarships, housing, wellness and academics, fueling student success and Tarleton State’s mission of excellence.

FROM STUDENT TO SUPPORTER: BRENT

GOUGH’S TARLETON STATE STORY

The Graham, Texas native and business owner honors his alma mater through giving.

Afirst-generation student, Brent Gough grew up in a small Texas town never dreaming of attending college. His life’s plan changed, however, when Tarleton State provided Brent a chance to pursue a college degree.

Over three decades later, Brent today is one of the most successful wealth management professionals in North Texas. His reputation is well known throughout the region, but particularly in the Aledo and Weatherford communities where he is recognized for unmatched character, integrity and his faith-based approach to life.

A little over one year ago, Brent decided to give back to the university that had given him so much. A multi-part commitment established Brent’s company Gough Wealth Management, family owned and operated with his son Slaten, as an official sponsor of Tarleton State Athletics and a proud member of the Texan Excellence Fund’s Team Tarleton® Corporate Sponsors Program. Brent and

his wife Meredith also made a generous scholarship gift to the Dr. Sam Pack College of Business.

“One year ago,” said Gough during a recent interview with the Division of Institutional Advancement, “I was approached by Tarleton State for the first time since I graduated about investing in student success and Tarleton State’s important mission. I would not be where I am today without Tarleton State, and I feel sincerely blessed to be able to support and make a difference. It is a great time to be a Texan, and I am excited to engage and impact the university’s continued rise.”

Brent considers it a privilege to pay it forward for the university that took him from small town Graham, Texas to where he is today. He is now encouraging all other Tarleton State alumni that are willing and able to do the same.

SCHOLARSHIP SPARKS LEADERSHIP

Civil engineering major Rebecca Sullivan finds mentorship and opportunity through the Mayfield-Dooley Scholarship.

Rebecca Sullivan is one of Tarleton State University’s civil engineering majors. Shortly after starting her Tarleton State journey, Rebecca learned she was one of five recipients of the prestigious engineering scholarship, the MayfieldDooley Scholarship. This scholarship is provided by Dr. Dwain Mayfield, after whom the Mayfield College of Engineering is named.

Rebecca is beyond grateful for the contributions the Mayfield-Dooley Scholarship makes towards her tuition, but she also knows that the full benefit of it goes beyond the monetary value. As a recipient Rebecca receives one-on-one lecture time with Dr. Mayfield and Dr. Rafael Landaeta, Dean of the Mayfield College of Engineering. In these lectures she is taught invaluable skills on how to succeed in the engineering world and given

access to exclusive internship opportunities.

The biggest impact the Mayfield-Dooley Scholarship has had on Rebecca was at a lunch she had with Dr. Mayfield. At this lunch she was asked if there was anything she really wanted to do that Dr. Mayfield could help facilitate. Inspired by a recent graduate she deeply admires, Rebecca decided she wanted to step up and become a leader in several of her organizations. With the help of Dr. Mayfield, the two of them made that happen.

Rebecca is proud to say that she was one of the first recipients of this scholarship and that she helps mentor all five new members. She is confident the skills and opportunities she's gaining through the Mayfield-Dooley Scholarship will lead to success after graduation.

TEXAN VOICES

"It’s a big deal to be sponsored by the person whose name is on my academic building. It feels surreal to be able to tell people that I am a Mayfield Program Scholar. It’s definitely a value."

TEAM TARLETON®

WHY I GIVE

“My motivation to invest in Tarleton State University has always been the people. I was blessed to follow a legacy set by my grandmother and mother, which led me to Tarleton, and later gave my children the same opportunity. I wanted to pay that forward by helping ensure other students could experience the same: meaningful relationships, a strong academic foundation and the confidence that comes from being part of this university.”

TEAM TARLETON®

THREE GENERATIONS STRONG

Kari Haile continues her family’s Tarleton State tradition through giving.

Kari Haile is a successful, third generation Tarleton State University alumna. She is also one of Stephenville’s most respected entrepreneurs, founding Haile & Company Real Estate with her husband, Jim Ed.

Kari's success has grown with Stephenville and she has a deep appreciation for the connection between her hometown and her hometown university. Kari’s decision to support Tarleton State through the Texan Excellence Fund as a Team Tarleton® corporate sponsor reflects her dedication to serving both Tarleton State and the community.

Kari first came to Tarleton State in 1983 to study marketing and later completed her secondary teacher certification in 1988. It was an exciting time for Kari and Tarleton State as new opportunities began to emerge.

Since her earliest days as an undergraduate, Kari has been an ambassador for Tarleton State, always ready to share how her experience on campus shaped her life, both personally and professionally. Kari is also a connector, who proactively creates links between Tarleton State and the community of Stephenville rooted in mutual benefit.

Kari’s dedication to service motivated her decision to fund the Charles Ann Wylie Martin Scholarship in honor of her mother, a stellar Dr. Sam Pack College of Business alumna.

Having experienced the impact of her generosity through the success of student recipients, Kari knows she is changing lives and is now encouraging her fellow alumni to do the same.

In her words “Every donation counts. So, join me. Make a gift. Be a Texan.”

Through Team Tarleton®, corporate sponsors directly impact students by funding tuition assistance, housing, wellness programs and other resources that support success. These investments open doors for first-generation and underserved students, ensuring they have the tools to pursue their education and future careers.

By joining Team Tarleton®, businesses become partners in shaping the next generation of leaders. Sponsorships fuel opportunities that strengthen achievement, build confidence and inspire Tarleton State Texans to reach their potential, while connecting brands to a legacy of excellence and service. Scan the code to learn how your business can make a lasting difference.

GIVING THAT LIVES ON

Planned gifts empower Tarleton State students, programs and the university’s mission to thrive.

Tarleton State University has benefited from the generosity of many alumni donors. Even in moments of loss, many choose to leave a lasting legacy by supporting Tarleton State. These deeply meaningful gifts, whether trusts, estate commitments, stock portfolios or other planned contributions, are often included in an individual’s will. At Tarleton State, we call this planned giving, and we honor the generosity and foresight behind each one.

Planned giving normally occurs when a donor is thinking about Tarleton State for something further down the line. Our donors feel they can make a bigger impact with that final gift than they can in their lifetime.

When the donor makes the decision to leave a planned gift to Tarleton State, they may establish a charitable gift annuity or trust. This way, the donor can still benefit while alive and when they pass, Tarleton State will receive the full amount.

These gifts go through the Tarleton State University Foundation. The Tarleton State University Foundation helps our donors set up their charitable annuity or trust, with the assistance from consulting firm, High Ground Advisors.

Our donors will then work with Tarleton State’s development officers to decide how to direct their gift. Our development officers are here to establish a relationship with our donors. Their job is to talk with and steward them, so our donors are comfortable in their decision to donate.

YOUR LEGACY. THEIR FUTURE.

Once that relationship is established, the development officers make sure the donors are included in the

different university events if they choose to be. They want our donors to be involved and meet the type of students they will be supporting in the future. They want them to see the programs and faculty members who will personally benefit from their gift.

Most importantly, our development officers are there to show our donors that Tarleton State truly cares about them, their gift and their legacy. It is that legacy our donors leave us with. Through their gift, their name lives on, making an impact on future generations. At the end of the day, that’s all planned giving is, and Tarleton State is here to help. We make sure that everything is set up and in place so our donors’ wishes can be fulfilled.

Tarleton State is committed to doing the right thing for our donors and hopes to continue earning their trust as we move forward.

MAKE A LASTING IMPACT THROUGH PLANNED GIVING

Planned giving is a meaningful way to leave a legacy that continues to support Tarleton State University for generations to come. Whether through a charitable trust, estate plan or other gift, your contribution helps shape the future of Tarleton students, programs and initiatives.
