CYCLE Collective Exhibition

CYCLE UDHR75 EXHIBITION FOR ARTIVISM 23.11.-30.11.2023 French Institute Baghdad

On the occasion of 75 Years of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), this exhibition - a role model for artistic activism and freedom of expression - presents contemporary works by different artists bringing together sculptures, installations, augmented reality, narratives, videos, poster designs, photography and performance.

CYCLE is a collective exhibition and the outcome of a collaborative laboratory where artists, designers and cultural practitioners elaborated specific topics and experimented ways of presentations which culminated in an exhibition tackling three major topics: Nature, Women, 2003. These three elements are closely connected to each other. If one link is missing, the cycle breaks down.

CYCLE is a declaration of intent and an invitation to engage. It unfolds as a space of gathering, in which diverse forms of thinking enhance the understanding of what art can be - artivism.

CYCLE is a cooperation between Tarkib Organization for Arts & Culture and UNAMI Human Rights Office, hosted in the French Institute Baghdad.

‫سايكل‬ ‫معرض لالرتيفيزم‬ ‫‪٢٠٢٣ / ١١ / ٣٠ - ٢٣‬‬ ‫في المعهد الفرنسي بغداد‬

‫بمناسبة مرور ‪ ٧٥‬عاما على اإلعالن العالمي لحقوق اإلنسان‪ ،‬قدم هذا المعرض ‪ -‬وهو‬ ‫نموذج يحتذى به للنشاط الفني وحرية التعبير ‪ -‬أعماال معاصرة لفنانين مختلفين تجمع‬ ‫بين المنحوتات والتركيبات والواقع المعزز والسرد ومقاطع الفيديو‪ .‬تصميم الملصقات‬ ‫والتصوير والعروض االدائية‪.‬‬ ‫سايكل هو معرض مشترك وهو نتاج عمل تعاوني حيث قام الفنانون والمصممون‬ ‫والممارسون الثقافيون بتطوير موضوعات محددة وتجربة طرق العرض التي بلغت ذروتها‬ ‫في معرض تناول ثالثة مواضيع رئيسية‪ :‬الطبيعة‪ ،‬المرأة‪ .٢٠٠٣ ،‬وترتبط هذه العناصر الثالثة‬ ‫ارتباطا وثيقا ببعضها البعض‪ .‬إذا فقد احدهما الدورة‪( .‬الحلقة)‬ ‫سايكل هو إعالن نوايا ودعوة للمشاركة‪ .‬إنه كمساحة للتجمع‪ ،‬حيث تعمل أشكال التفكير‬ ‫المتنوعة على تعزيز فهم ما يمكن أن يكون عليه الفن ‪ -‬االرتيفيزم‪.‬‬ ‫سايكل هو عبارة عن تعاون بين منظمة تركيب للثقافة والفنون ومكتب حقوق اإلنسان في‬ ‫العراق يونامي‪ ،‬وتم استضافتها في المعهد الفرنسي في بغداد‪.‬‬

The poetic performance is an appeal to harmony between humankind and nature. History tells us that we should respect nature, follow its laws, and always protect it. Any harm we cause to nature will return to haunt us. During the Industrial Revolution in the last century, humankind created immense material wealth. But it came at the cost of extensive damage to natural resources, which disrupted the ecological and natural balance. Being in the 21st century, it seems that humankind did not learn from history.

Where should humanity go from here?

‫العرض األدائي الشعري هو نداء للتناغم بين اإلنسان والطبيعة‪ .‬يخبرنا التاريخ‬ ‫أنه يجب علينا احترام الطبيعة‪ ،‬واتباع قوانينها‪ ،‬وحمايتها دائما‪ .‬وأي ضرر نسببه‬ ‫للطبيعة سيعود ليطاردنا‪ .‬خالل الثورة الصناعية في القرن الماضي‪ ،‬خلقت البشرية‬ ‫ثروة مادية هائلة‪ .‬لكن ذلك جاء على حساب أضرار جسيمة للموارد الطبيعية‪ ،‬مما‬ ‫أدى إلى اإلخالل بالتوازن البيئي والطبيعي‪ .‬في القرن الحادي والعشرين‪ ،‬يبدو أن‬ ‫البشرية لم تتعلم من التاريخ‪.‬‬ ‫الى أين يجب أن تذهب اإلنسانية من هنا؟‬

Believing himself in the land from which he came from, the land which his youth lived and was hoping that he would die in it. But what he wasn’t preparing for, one day that his land would lose him his forces that he used to live, his ability to feel and be a reason to steal his language, deprivation of his ability to move, pressed his breath and she was aware of everything that would happen to him later, but she wanted him to see it with his own eyes, and at the end she chose him as a witness to everything, as he was the cause of everything that happened. So she fixed him in the middle, he was standing without movement and did not know what he was doing by himself, the horror of the situation was enough to lose him some of his senses and powers again. But he was not aware that he would not be able to walk later because she restricted him, prevented him from extending his roots, his freedom, wrapped in each of her, preventing him from breathing mocking him that he once thought to bring his senses back in one day. At the end, her work crowned that he became a part of her and she became part of him, they were one in the picture not two, from which she escalated to him.

And, in the midst of all this he wanted to live again so his land as long as he learned that, and taught him that he will live despite his difficulties, and decided to face his life again, so he picked up a fish from his land, to turns out for him later that the fish was dead, and he was the one who killed her earlier.

‫مؤمِ نا ً نفسه في أرضه التي جاء منها ‪ِ ،‬‬ ‫أرضه التي عاش بها شبابه و كان يأمل‬ ‫ان يلقى حتفه بها ‪،‬ما كان يتهيأ له يومً ا بأن ارضه هي التي ستفقده قدرته على‬ ‫اإلحساس و تكون سببا في سرقة لغته منه و سلبته قد َرته على الحراك ‪ ،‬ضغطت‬ ‫ً‬ ‫الحقا ‪ ،‬لكنها أرادت ُ‬ ‫له ان‬ ‫على أنفاسه و كانت على علم بكل ما سيحصل لها‬ ‫ً‬ ‫يُصطدم ‪ ،‬ان يرى كل ما سيحدث بعينيه ‪ ،‬و بالنهاية إختارته شاهِ دا على كل‬ ‫ً‬ ‫واقفا دون حراك‬ ‫شيء كما كان سببا ً في كل ما حدث ‪ ،‬فثبتته في وسطِ ها ‪ ،‬كان‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ال يدري ما يفعل بنفسه‪ ،‬كان هول الموقف كفيال ً بان يُفقده بعضا من حواسه و‬ ‫قواه ‪ ،‬لكنه ما كان داريا ً بانه لن يستطيع المشي الحقا ً النها قيدته ‪ ،‬منعته من مد‬ ‫جذوره ‪ ،‬صلبتها و اخذت منها حريتها‪ ،‬ملتفة على كل واحدة منها ‪ ،‬مانعة إياها‬ ‫من التنفس ‪ ،‬و كللت عملها بانه اصبح جزءا ً منها و هي اصبحت جزءا ً منه ‪ ،‬كانوا‬ ‫واحدا ً في الصورة ال اثنين ‪ ،‬تصاعدت منها اليه ‪.‬‬ ‫و في خضم هذا كله اراد ان يعيش مجددا ً فأرضه طالما لقنته ذلك ‪ ،‬و علمته‬ ‫بانه سيعيش رغم صعابه‪ ،‬و قرر ان يقبم حياته مجددا ً ‪ ،‬ملتقطا ً سمكة من أرضه ‪،‬‬ ‫لتثبت له الحقا ً بانها كانت ميته ‪ ،‬و هو من قتلها سابقا ً ‪.‬‬

ALARM Sculpture: Found Object, 21.06.2023 Sound: Ahwar Rooster, 22.06.2023 Concept: Hella Mewis There is a German saying, which I remembered, when we visited the Marshes in summer 2023. The saying goes: “Wo sich Fuchs und Hase gute Nacht sagen.” In English, it is ‘in the back of beyond’ or ‘in the middle of nowhere’.

Both translations describe the place and space, that reminded me of the fairytale world of my childhood. In this fairytale world, there was a rooster whose job it was to wake up both, the people and his flock of chickens, every morning.

A busy rustling woke me up in the early hours. At exactly 4:26 am, I saw a rooster standing on a stick coming out of the reed house. The rooster dutifully crowed his first kikeriki towards the east. Afterwards, he dutifully went to the next places to crowed his kikeriki in all cardinal directions until the people and the flock of chickens started moving.

The kikeriki of the Ahwar rooster is a wake-up call. The shit of the buffalo with the engraved hand of his shapers is a sign that there are humans living in an alarming situation.

‫انذار‬ ‫النحت ‪ :‬فاوند اوبجكت ‪٢٠٢٣/6/٢١‬‬ ‫الصوت‪ :‬ديك االهوار ‪٢٠٢٣/6/٢٢‬‬ ‫الفكرة ‪ :‬هيال ميفس‬ ‫هناك مثل ألماني تذكرته عندما زرنا األهوار في صيف ‪ .٢٠٢٣‬يقول المثل‪:‬‬ ‫‪»Wo sich Fuchs und Hase Gute Nacht sagen«.‬‬ ‫باللغة العربية هو «في الجزء الخلفي من ما بعد» أو «في منتصف الالمكان»‪.‬‬ ‫تصف الترجمتان المكان والمساحة‪ ،‬مما ذكرني بعالم القصص الخيالية في‬ ‫طفولتي‪ .‬في ذلك العالم الخيالي‪ ،‬كان هناك ديك مهمته إيقاظ الناس وقطيع‬ ‫الدجاج الخاص به كل صباح‪.‬‬ ‫أيقظني في الساعات األولى من الصباح‪ .‬في تمام الساعة ‪ 4:٢6‬صباحا‪ ،‬رأيته واقفا‬ ‫على عصا يخرج من بيت القصب‪ .‬صاح الديك بإخالص أول كيكيريكي له باتجاه‬ ‫الشرق‪ .‬بعد ذلك‪ ،‬ذهب بإخالص إلى األماكن التالية ليصيح كيكيريكي في جميع‬ ‫االتجاهات االربعة حتى بدأ الناس وقطيع الدجاج في التحرك‪.‬‬ ‫إن كيكيريكي ديك أهوار هي بمثابة دعوة لالستيقاظ‪ .‬فضالت الجاموس الذي‬ ‫عليها يد صائغيها المنقوشة هو عالمة على أن هناك بشرا ً يعيشون في وضع ينذر‬ ‫بالخطر‪.‬‬

CYCLE Newspaper Tarkib Collaboration

In 1930, most of the people got their news by listening to wireless radio.

On 18 April 1930, the BBC’s news announcer had nothing to communicate.

“There is no news,” was the script of the 20:45 news bulleting. Piano music was played for the rest of the 15-minutes segment.

105 years later, we imagine a similar scenery. The newspaper is not disappeared and our script is: “There is only good news today.

‫في عام ‪ ،19٣٠‬كان معظم الناس يحصلون على االخبار من خالل االستماع الى‬ ‫الراديو الالسلكي‪ .‬بتاريخ ‪ 18‬ابريل ‪ ،19٣٠‬لم يكن لدى مذيع االخبار في بي بي سي ما‬ ‫يقوله‪« .‬ليس هنالك اخبار اليوم» كان هو نص نشرة االخبار في الساعة ‪ .8:4٥‬تم‬ ‫اذاعة موسيقى البيانو لبقية المقطع الذي تبلغ مدته ‪ 1٥‬دقيقة‪.‬‬ ‫وبعد مرور ‪ 1٠٥‬سنة‪ ،‬نتخيل مشهدا ً مشابهاً‪ .‬الصحيفة لم تختفي والنص لدينا هو‬ ‫«ليس هناك سوى اخبار جيدة اليوم»‪.‬‬

The comic depicts concerns in regard to climate migration, overpopulation and urban planning. The cover of the booklet is made by weaved reed blades which were collected during a field trip on June 22, 2023 in Ahwar Southern Iraq.

Took out of its family roots, the reed travelled to Baghdad without Salwa having prepared the right environment.

If the buffalo runs out of water, his eyes becomes red, because the clay, usually under water, effects his eye. If the eye is red he is sentenced to death.

The story follows a herd of buffaloes, from its peak to its destruction and the future we want to see them to live in.

‫اذا نفذ الماء من الجاموس‪ ،‬تصبح عيناها حمراء‪ ،‬الن الطين تحت الماء يؤثر‬ ‫على عينها واذا كانت العين حمراء حكم عليها باالعدام‪.‬‬ ‫تتبع القصة قطيعا ً من الجواميس‪ ،‬من ذروته الى تدميره والمستقبل الذي‬ ‫نريد ان نراهم يعيشون فيه‪.‬‬

MESSAGES FROM THE FUTURE Sculpture: Found Object, 21.03.2023, Sawa Lake Messages: Tarkib Collaboration

Amnah Ali refers in her cartoons either to the Iraqi Women Football Team or to boby. Boby is the dog character known from the chewing gum “boby Bubble”. “boby Bubble” is a typical Iraqi product that started to be driven out of the market, but still exists. The Iraqi “boby” shares the market now with three other brands: “Yobi” and “Toni”, made in Iran, and “Robi”, made in Lebanon.

Boby is for Amnah, and for all of us, a symbol of Iraqi identity.

Messages from the future follow boby, discovering symbols of Iraqi identity, which are these days close to disappear, like boby: Al Ahwar, Habaniye, Furat, Diyala Orange, Iraqi Trade Union and Ashur.

‫تشير آمنه علي في رسومها الكاريكاتورية إما إلى فريق كرة القدم النسائي العراقي أو‬ ‫إلى بوبي‪ .‬بوبي هي شخصية الكلب المعروفة من العلكة ”بوبي ببل ”‪ .‬وهو منتج‬ ‫عراقي تقليدي بدأ طرده من السوق‪ ،‬لكنه ال يزال موجودا‪ .‬يتشارك ”بوبي“ العراقي‬ ‫السوق اآلن مع ثالث عالمات تجارية أخرى‪” :‬يوبي“ و“توني“‪ ،‬المصنوعة في إيران‪،‬‬ ‫و“روبي“‪ ،‬المصنوعة في لبنان‪.‬‬ ‫يمثل بوبي بالنسبة آلمنه ‪ ،‬وبالنسبة لنا جميعا‪ ،‬رمز للهوية العراقية‪.‬‬ ‫تتبع الرسائل القادمة من المستقبل بوبي‪ ،‬واكتشاف رموز الهوية العراقية‪ ،‬التي‬ ‫تقترب هذه األيام من االختفاء‪ ،‬مثل بوبي‪ :‬األهوار‪ ،‬الحبانية‪ ،‬الفرات‪ ،‬برتقال ديالى‬ ‫‪،‬وحدة التجارة العراقية وأشور‪.‬‬

DIYALA ORANGE Purchased Object: Tarkib Collaboration Mummification: Mawada Ahmed Diyala is officially given the title “Orange Capital of the Middle East”. The province is still using the slogan for its own marketing, engraved in the entrance gate to the province. But, what is if there is not enough water? The Citrus Sinensis alias Diyala Orange, part of the Iraqi identity, is going to disappear for two main reasons.

The first reason is the drops in sales due to less expensive orange imports, especially from Turkey and Egypt. Even though the taste of the Iraqi orange is much better and still has an affordable price, but people prefer the imports because they are simply cheaper. If you govern a family of eight, you do not really have a choice, you take the cheaper ones.

The second reason is the decline of surface and rain water, which is necessary for an orange to grow. The Diyala Orange used to have a typical orange colour. But, because of insufficient water resources the colour remains green to yellow or green-yellow. The fruit stays green due to the chlorophyll produced on the peel of orange citrus to protect itself from sunburn. Chlorophyll is vital for the photosynthesis, which allows fruit energy to absorb from sunlight.

‫برتقال ديالى‬ ‫شراءه‪ :‬تعاون تركيب‬ ‫التحنيط‪ :‬مودة احمد‬ ‫منحت ديالى رسميا لقب ”عاصمة الشرق األوسط البرتقالية“‪ .‬ال تزال المحافظة‬ ‫تستخدم الشعار للتسويق الخاص بها‪ ،‬محفورا في بوابة مدخل المحافظة ولكن‪،‬‬ ‫ماذا لو لم يكن هناك ما يكفي من الماء؟ ستختفي الحمضيات المعروف باسم‬ ‫برتقال ديالى ‪ ،‬وهو جزء من الهوية العراقية‪ ،‬الثنين من األسباب الرئيسية‬ ‫السبب األول هو انخفاض المبيعات بسبب استيراد البرتقال األقل تكلفة‪ ،‬خاصة‬ ‫من تركيا ومصر‪ .‬على الرغم من أن طعم البرتقال العراقي أفضل بكثير وال يزال بسعر‬ ‫مناسب إال أن الناس يفضلون المستوردة ألنها ببساطة أرخص‪ .‬إذا كنت رب اسرة‬ ‫مكونة من ثمانية أفراد‪ ،‬فليس لديك حقا خيار‪ ،‬اال ان تاخذ االرخص‪.‬‬ ‫السبب الثاني هو انخفاض المياه السطحية ومياه األمطار‪ ،‬والذي بدوره أمر ضروري‬ ‫لنمو البرتقال‪ .‬كان لون برتقال ديالى برتقالي نموذجي‪ .‬ولكن‪ ،‬بسبب عدم كفاية‬ ‫الموارد المائية‪ ،‬يظل اللون أخضر او أصفر أو أخضر‪-‬أصفر‪ .‬تظل الفاكهة خضراء‬ ‫بسبب الكلوروفيل المنتج على قشر الحمضيات البرتقالية لحماية نفسها من حروق‬ ‫الشمس‪ ،‬الكلوروفيل حيوي لعملية التمثيل الضوئي‪ ،‬مما يسمح المتصاص طاقة‬ ‫الفاكهة من أشعة الشمس‪.‬‬

WATER SHARE Hologram Photography Zaid Saad

The two holograms show Zaid Saad taking water from the Atatürk Reservoir in Turkey which is filled with plenty of fresh Euphrates river water in order to release it back into the Euphrates river downstream in Al Musayyab nearby Kerbela in Iraq.

The Atatürk Reservoir and the Atatürk Dam are part of Turkey’s multi-sector regional development Southeastern Anatolia Project (GAP) established in 1989. The GAP project and due to the lack of an official agreement on water sharing between the riparian countries (Turkey, Syria and Iraq) led and leads to significant reductions in water shares for both the Euphrates and Tigris rivers resulting in extreme low flow of surface water downstream in Syria and Iraq.

‫تظهر الصورتان الهيلوغرامية الفنان زيد سعد وهو يأخذ المياه من خزان سد اتاتورك‬ ‫في تركيا المليء بالكثير من مياه نهر الفرات العذبة من اجل اطالقها مرة اخرى في‬ ‫مجرى نهر الفرات في منطقة المسيب بالقرب من محافظة كربالء في العراق‪.‬‬ ‫يعد خزان اتاتورك وسد اتاتورك جزءا ً من مشروع التنمية االقليمية متعدد القطاعات‬ ‫في جنوب شرق االناضول (‪ )GAP‬في تركيا والذي تم تأسيسه في عام ‪ .1989‬مشروع‬ ‫‪ GAP‬وبسبب عدم وجود اتفاق رسمي بشأن تقاسم المياه بين الدول المتشاطئة‬ ‫(تركيا و سوريا والعراق) ادى الى انخفاض كبير في حصص المياه لكل من نهري‬ ‫الفرات ودجلة مما ادى الى انخفاض شديد في تدفق المياه السطحية في اتجاه‬ ‫مجرى النهر في سوريا والعراق‪.‬‬

15 Video Art of an intervention in 6. BAGHDAD WALK 2023 Muhaned Taha

“Isn’t it time for a change of our own, if Iraq will meet only 15% of its water demand in 2035?” Muhaned Taha is asking.

Recent studies predict that Iraq will meet only 15% of its water demand by 2035 if current trends continue. Muhaned Taha responded to this magic number and placed a large-scale banner in the Tigris river under Al Sarrefiya Bridge with the number 15 written on it as part of Tarkib’s this year’s edition BAGHDAD WALK. He merged his intervention into a video art which is an appeal to local communities and citizens to contribute to responsible consumption and production of water resources.

‫” الم يحن الوقت لتغيير انفسنا‪ ،‬اذا كان العراق سيلبي ‪ %1٥‬فقط من الطلب على‬ ‫المياه في عام ‪٢٠٣٥‬؟“ مهند طه يسأل‪.‬‬ ‫وتتوقع الدراسات الحديثة ان يلبي العراق ‪ %1٥‬فقط من الطلب على المياه بحلول عام‬ ‫‪ ٢٠٣٥‬اذا استمرت االتجاهات الحالية‪ .‬استجاب الفنان البيئي مهند طه لهذا الرقم‬ ‫السحري وقام بوضع الفتة كبيرة الحجم في نهر دجلة تحت جسر الصرافية ومكتوب‬ ‫عليها الرقم ‪ .1٥‬وتشكل مداخلته الفنية نداء للمجتمعات المحلية والمواطنين‬ ‫للمساهمة في االستهالك واالنتاج المسؤولين للموارد المائية‪.‬‬

Muhaned Taha’s intervention 15 is addressing both, the water scarcity and the pollution of the water in Iraq. The number 15 refers to the forecast that Iraq will meet only 15% of its water demand in 2035. The banner was placed in the Tigris river under Al Sarafiya Bridge, nearby the smoking chimney were the waste of the Medical City is burned.

Hence, the number 15 refers to another environmental key fact. Of the total amount of waste generated by health-care activities, about 85% is non-hazardous waste. The remaining 15% is considered hazardous that may be infectious, toxic or radioactive.

‫المداخلة الفنية للفنان البيئي مهند طه ”خمسة عشر“ تعالج كال من ندرة المياه‬ ‫وتلوث المياه في العراق‪ .‬يشير الرقم ‪ ١٥‬الى توقعات بان العراق سيلبي ‪ %1٥‬فقط‬ ‫من احتياجاته من المياه في عام ‪ .٢٠٣٥‬وقد تم وضع الالفتة في نهر دجلة تحت‬ ‫جسر الصرافية‪ ،‬بالقرب من مدخنة بناية مدينة الطب التي يتم فيها حرق النفايات‪.‬‬ ‫ومن ثم‪ ،‬فإن الرقم ‪ 1٥‬يشير إلى حقيقة بيئية رئيسية أخرى‪ .‬ومن إجمالي كمية‬ ‫النفايات الناتجة عن أنشطة الرعاية الصحية‪ ،‬حوالي ‪ %8٥‬منها عبارة عن نفايات غير‬ ‫خطرة‪ .‬أما نسبة الـ ‪ %1٥‬المتبقية فتعتبر خطرة وقد تكون معدية أو سامة أو مشعة‪.‬‬

The chimney smokes every day, several times a day. Black smoke is a sign that combustion is not taking place correctly and therefore many pollutants are released into the environment.

Incineration is considered one of the effective ways to dispose of medical waste, but that goes with a large quantity of heavy metals and reactive, toxic materials produced, if the proper medical waste management is missing.

‫الصورة ملتقطة للمدخنة التابعة لمدينة الطب‪ .‬تبعث الدخان كل يوم عدة مرات‪.‬‬ ‫يعد الدخان االسود عالمة على ان عملية االحتراق ال تتم بشكل صحيح وبالتالي يتم‬ ‫اطالق العديد من الملوثات في البيئة‪.‬‬ ‫يعتبر الحرق من الطرق الفعالة للتخلص من النفايات الطبية‪ ،‬اال ان ذلك يترافق مع‬ ‫كمية كبيرة من المعادن الثقيلة والمواد المتفاعلة والسامة التي يتم انتاجها‪ ،‬في‬ ‫حالة عدم وجود ادارة مناسبة للنفايات الطبية‪.‬‬

QUESTIONING ARCHEOLOGICAL HILLS Painting: Noor Abd Ali Text: Hella Mewis

Noor Abd Ali is questioning in her painting archeological hills in Thi Qar Governorate which are misused as hills of ‘mistakes’. But, what mistake are we talking about and who is considering it as a mistake?

A report by women’s right activist Jannat Al Ghazzi, published in 2012 by Mosawat Magazine, was resurfaced in 2020 on several media platforms, discussing its details again. Jannat Al Ghazzi refered to her visit of Sir Al Tal. Sir Al Tal literally means the hill of mistakes. The hill is located in Al Batha district, 40 km northwest of Nasseriya near the ancient city of Ur, where are many archeological hills, remains of temples of civilization that existed thousands of years ago. Sir Al Tal, and many others like it, are used as mass graves for women killed in the so-called honor crimes. Each tribe or clan has a specific lot in those hills where its victims, barred from regular cemeteries, are buried, fully clothed, without funerals or memorials.

She pointed out different reasons, why archeological hills became ‘hills of mistakes”. First, “sinful women” do not deserve to be buried in the areas designated for the rest of the dead. Second, clans used to bury children in these areas, and the presence of people near them will not raise suspicion of a crime. Third, the hills are high areas and will be safe from drowning in the event of a flood, which may expose the presence of female corpses.

She described: “These hills are bleeding ground for various animals that dig up the ground and eat the bodies of betrayed women. You find pieces of flesh scattered here and there, and the remains of hair and clothes flying around, or the bones of old corpses. It is a truly hideous sight that does not suggest that we are truly in the twenty-first century or in a civilized area.”

The journalist Dima Yassine discussed the report in her article and stated: “Honor killings are not characteristic of one specific region, city, or village in Iraq. The phenomenon has been on the rise in all parts of the country since the US occupation, which brought about chaos and widespread weapons.”

She further points out: “After 2003, most honor crimes became based on mere suspicion, without any sort of proof. In many cases, honor killings were but an excuse to cover up other family issues, such as limiting inheritance to males, for instance, or hiding the “scandal” of rape, thus killing the women victims of rape twice.”

‫التساؤل عن التالل األثرية‬ ‫لوحة‪ :‬نور عبد علي‬ ‫نص‪ :‬هيال ميفس‬ ‫تتساءل نور عبد علي في لوحتها عن التالل األثرية في محافظة ذي قار التي يساء‬ ‫استخدامها كتالل ”أخطاء“‪ .‬ولكن‪ ،‬عن أي خطأ نتحدث ومن يعتبره خطأ؟‬ ‫تقرير الناشطة في مجال حقوق المرأة جنات الغزي‪ ،‬الذي نشرته مجلة مساواة عام‬ ‫‪ ،٢٠1٢‬عاد للظهور عام ‪ ٢٠٢٠‬عبر عدة منصات إعالمية‪ ،‬لتناقش تفاصيله من جديد‪.‬‬ ‫وأشارت جنات الغزي إلى زيارتها لسر التل‪.‬‬ ‫سر التل يعني حرفيا تل األخطاء‪ .‬يقع التل في منطقة البطحاء على بعد ‪ 4٠‬كم‬ ‫شمال غرب الناصرية بالقرب من مدينة أور األثرية‪ ،‬حيث توجد العديد من التالل‬ ‫األثرية‪ ،‬وبقايا معابد حضارية كانت موجودة منذ آالف السنين‪ .‬يتم استخدام سر‬ ‫التل‪ ،‬والعديد من أمثاله‪ ،‬كمقابر جماعية للنساء الالتي ُقتلن في ما يسمى بجرائم‬ ‫الشرف‪ .‬ولكل قبيلة أو عشيرة قطعة أرض محددة في تلك التالل‪ ،‬حيث يُدفن‬ ‫ضحاياها‪ ،‬الممنوعون من دخول المقابر العادية‪ ،‬بمالبسهم الكاملة‪ ،‬دون جنازات‬ ‫أو شاهد قبر‪.‬‬ ‫وأشارت إلى أسباب مختلفة‪ ،‬جعلت التالل األثرية ”تالل األخطاء“‪ ،‬أوالً‪” ،‬النساء‬ ‫الخاطئات“ ال يستحقن الدفن في المناطق المخصصة لبقية الموتى‪ ،‬وثانياً‪ ،‬كانت‬ ‫العشائر تدفن األطفال في هذه المناطق‪ ،‬ووجود أشخاص بالقرب منها لن يثير‬ ‫شبهة جريمة‪.‬ثالثاً‪ ،‬التالل هي مناطق مرتفعة وستكون آمنة من الغرق في حالة‬ ‫حدوث فيضان‪ ،‬مما قد يكشف وجود جثث النساء‪.‬‬ ‫ووصفت‪” :‬هذه التالل أرض نازفة لحيوانات مختلفة تحفر األرض وتأكل أجساد‬ ‫النساء المغدورات‪ ،‬فتجد قطع اللحم متناثرة هنا وهناك‪ ،‬وبقايا الشعر والمالبس‬ ‫المتطايرة‪ ،‬أو عظام قديمة“‪ .‬الجثث‪ .‬إنه مشهد بشع حقا وال يوحي بأننا حقا في‬ ‫القرن الحادي والعشرين أو في منطقة متحضرة“‪.‬‬ ‫وناقشت الصحفية ديما ياسين التقرير في مقالها وقالت‪” :‬جرائم الشرف ليست‬ ‫سمة منطقة أو مدينة أو قرية معينة في العراق‪ .‬فالظاهرة اخذت في االرتفاع في‬ ‫جميع أنحاء البالد منذ االحتالل األمريكي‪ ،‬الذي جلب الفوضى وانتشرت األسلحة“‪.‬‬ ‫وتشير إلى أنه ”بعد عام ‪ ،٢٠٠٣‬أصبحت معظم جرائم الشرف مبنية على مجرد‬ ‫الشك‪ ،‬دون أي نوع من اإلثبات‪ .‬وفي كثير من الحاالت‪ ،‬كانت جرائم الشرف مجرد‬ ‫ذريعة للتغطية على قضايا عائلية أخرى‪ ،‬مثل قصر الميراث على الذكور‪ ،‬على سبيل‬ ‫المثال“‪ .‬أو إخفاء ”فضيحة“ االغتصاب‪ ،‬وبالتالي قتل النساء ضحايا االغتصاب‬ ‫مرتين“‪.‬‬

‫الليلة الدموية‬ ‫فاوند اوبجكت ‪ :‬زيد سعد‬ ‫الصوت‪ :‬مها عطية‬ ‫القصة‪ :‬مجهول‬ ‫على الرغم من مظاهر الحداثة في المجتمع العراقي‪ ،‬فانه ال يزال يتبع النظام‬ ‫العشائري الذكوري الذي يتهرب من القانون في مسائل الشرف‪ .‬غالبا ً ما تأخذ جرائم‬ ‫«الشرف» شكل القتل‪ ،‬على الرغم من انها يمكن ان تشمل ايضا ً اشكاال ً اخرى من‬ ‫العنف مثل االعتداء الجسدي والحبس والسيطرة على الحركة والحرمان من التعليم‬ ‫والزواج القسري واالنتحار واالهانة العامة‪.‬‬ ‫منحوتة «الليلة الدموية» تمثل صورة بطريقة واقعية‬ ‫« ان تدهور اوضاع المرأة بشكل خاص بدا مع بدء الحصار االقتصادي على العراق عام‬ ‫‪ ،1991‬والذي شكل نقطة تحول في الظروف المعيشية‪ ،‬وبالتالي العالقات االجتماعية‬ ‫في البالد‪ .‬فقد ذبلت الطبقة الوسطى المتعلمة‪ ،‬ولم يعد التعليم يعتبر رأس المال‬ ‫االجتماعي كما كان في السابق‪».‬‬

As a young girl, I witnessed an honor killing with my own eyes. Whenever I remember this moment I feel tremendous gloomy and weep bitterly. But, somehow it helps me to withstand my own destiny. At least, I am still alive.

I grew up in a multi-child family and never had the feeling of harmony and understanding. My mother, sisters and brothers never paid attention to me and I felt alone. I was only 16 years old and a boy gave me the feeling to be liked. He came to my family asking for hand three times, and got rejected three times. I was left alone with myself.

One day, my family discovered that I have a phone. It was a normal cellular phone without internet, camera, apps and GPS tracker, just saying: “HELLO”.

One of my brothers took his gun and aimed it at me. Thank god, he did not pull the trigger. But, what happened afterwards was even worse. I saw myself going through every torture method imaginable. The marks were showing and the neighbors began to ask questions. Therefore, my brothers locked me in a secret toilet room in our house, measuring one meter and one and a half meter. They continued to torture me every day for eight months, until I got released.

Thank god, my family let me go to school again. Another marriage proposal came. My family rejected again, but I found a way to convince them to accept the proposal. We got married and moved from my hometown to Baghdad. Arrived in the new environment, and with the feeling to be secured, I told him everything what I had experienced in the past.

He was not ready for the new environment and I found myself in another kind of torture every day. When I ask for a change, he said: “You can decide, me or your family.” After two or three years, I do not really remember, because it does not matter, I asked for the divorce. We divorced and I did not take my rights, because I simply did not want to.

I went back to my family and thank god, they did let me finish my study. Other women do not have the chance to finish anything. They only have the gun in their face and one of the brother’s pulls the trigger.

I can work, but I do not feel I have my freedom. My freedom is only with my imagination and me.

As part of the preparations for CYCLE we took water probes from the Tigris and Euphrates rivers and from the Marshes, in order to test the water quality.

One of the indicators of a water quality test is its pH value. The results of the liquid pH-tests we did, reached the highest possible score: 8,2 - represented by the colour pink. Pink in the pH-test means ALERT - an alarming situation.

For Baghdad Walk we decided to use one of the advertising columns in Haifa Street to colour it pink and to shine a spotlight on the alarming fact that there is not only water scarcity in Iraq, but the water is polluted as well.

Girls and women are the most affected part of the society suffering of water scarcity and pollution. Why? Because water belongs to household duties and girls and women are the ones responsible for it. Families living in a rural environment are more affected from water scarcity and pollution than those living in cities. Girls and women are also threatened by the habits and behaviours that can lead to so-called honour killings.

‫‪Listen to the story of Marwa:‬‬

HELLO Marwa lives in a village in Al Qadisiyah governorate in Iraq. She is a decent girl and does her duties around the household to support her family. One of her responsibilities is to bring water for drinking, cleaning and washing.

Her family lives in a rural environment and they mainly depend on available natural water sources. Their accessible well of water dried out and she has to go to the next available source. Twice per day, she needs to walk three kilometers, to reach the water source and to bring drinking and cleaning water to her family.

One day, she came back from her daily water mission, and one of the neighbor’s said “Hello” to her. She is a decent girl, busy with her daily chores, she knows the neighbor so she answers back without looking at him: “Hello”.

Later, she is found dead, in the bathroom of her family’s house. Her brother killed her.

When the brother was asked: “Why did you do this?” He answered: “My neighbor came to me and told me, that she replied to his ‘Hello’ with ‘Hello’. I know, she was not looking at him. However, that is a shame. How can I deal with this shame? I killed her, even though I knew, that she did not do anything wrong, because I simply do not know, what I should answer to my neighbor.”.

‫هلو‬ ‫مروة تعيش في قرية في محافظة القادسية في العراق‪ ،‬هي فتاة محترمة وتقوم‬ ‫بواجباتها المنزلية لمساعدة عائلتها‪ .‬وحدة من مسؤولياتها جلب ماء الشرب‪،‬‬ ‫التنظيف والغسل‪ .‬عائلتها تعيش في منطقة ريفية وتعتمد بشكل اساسي على‬ ‫مصادر المياه الطبيعية المتوفرة‪ .‬بئر الماء المتاح جف وعليها الذهاب الى المصدر‬ ‫التالي‪ .‬مرتين باليوم‪ ،‬تحتاج ان تقطع مسافر ثالثة كيلومترات‪ ،‬حتى تصل الى مصدر‬ ‫المياه لتجلب مياه الشرب والتنظيف لعائلتها‪.‬‬ ‫في يوم ما‪ ،‬وهي عائدة من مهمة جلب الماء اليومية‪ ،‬احد الجيران قال لها ”هلو“‪.‬‬ ‫هي فتاة محترمة‪ ،‬مشغولة بواجباتها اليومية‪ ،‬تعرف جارها فترد عليه ”هلو“ دون‬ ‫ان تنظر اليه‪.‬‬ ‫الحقاً‪ ،‬وجدت مقتولة‪ ،‬في حمام منزل عائلتها‪ .‬شقيقها قتلها‪.‬‬ ‫عندما سألو شقيقها‪” :‬لماذا فعلت ذلك؟“ اجاب‪” :‬جاري اتى لي واخبرني‪ ،‬بانها اجابته‬ ‫بعد ان قال ”هلو“ بكلمة ”هلو“‪ .‬انا اعرف انها لم تكن تنظر اليه‪ .‬بكل االحوال‪ ،‬هذا‬ ‫عار‪ .‬كيف لي ان اتعامل مع هذا العار؟ انا ببساطة قتلتها‪ ،‬حتى وان كنت اعرف‪ ،‬انها‬ ‫لم تفعل اي شيء خاطئ‪ ،‬ببساطة الني لم اعرف‪ ،‬ماذا يجب علي ان ارد على جيراني‪.” .‬‬

Augmented Reality shows the four sources: Iraq Penal Code (of 1969, and as amended in 2010), the Iraqi Constitution, the Code of Criminal Procedure and the Iraqi Civil Code. The weaving design underlines that discriminative laws in the legal system come along with tribal customary laws that all together create significant impediments for improving women’s socio-economic status and participation.

The list of articles is not intended to be exhausted, but an exemplary proof for girl’s and women’s injustice in Iraq. The World Bank recently estimated that bringing women’s participation in the labour force to MENA regional levels would increase Iraq’s GDP per capita by almost 31%. The pre-condition for the latter mentioned fact is to create the needed legal environment and to improve the legislative.

THE TURNING POINT “The deterioration in women’s conditions, in particular, began with the start of the economic embargo in Iraq in 1991, which was a turning point in the living conditions and, consequently, the social relations in the country. The educated middle class had withered, and education was no longer considered the social capital it once was. It was replaced by financial status and proximity to centers of power, be they governmental, tribal, or religious.

Due to the weakness of the civil law and its inability to protect them, Iraqis, in the city and the countryside alike, started looking for their tribal lineages to take refuge under their clans’ wings and by their tribal laws. Hence, they increasingly submitted to tribal customs, which included specific norms that defined how to treat women, how to deal with women’s education and work, as well as personal family status. People returned to practice customs and traditions that they had previously rejected. At that point, there was a religious tide encouraged by the government to control the feelings of discontent with the deteriorating economic situation and to divert people’s focus from the follies of the dictator - who had led the country into a pit - to the religious occult that people clung to like an escape, so that they can bear the hardships of life.

Things only got worse after the US occupation and the fall of state institutions. People’s adherence to their tribal origins increased along with their religious/sectarian roots. People were once again associated with their sects due to the presence of sectarian forces, the occupation’s reinforcement of the principle of political quotas based on sect and ethnicity, and the outbreak of sectarian violence. Put simply, if the clan does not protect the people, their religious sects will.

This situation had catastrophic ramifications on women and their status, reinforcing notions of “honor versus shame”, whereby women bear the responsibilty of “not dishonoring” the name of both the clan and the sect. As a result, honor killings and domestic violence soared in Iraq, generation considerable waves of violence.”

CLIMATE MIGRATION Painting: Noor Abd Ali AR: Amir Akram Climate migration is already a reality in Iraq. At the end of 2021, IOM recorded approximately 20,000 people displaced due to water scarcity, high salinity, and poor water quality across Iraq (looking at only 10 of 19 governorates).

All governorates are affected by water scarcity and the number is constantly raising, but due to a lack of systematic tracking mechanism as well as unregistered settlements an exact statistic information is not available.

Noor Abd Ali’s painting gives a human face to climate-induced displacements showing symbols of objects that are either left or found. The impact of climate migration, which is nor organized nor prepared, form a new source of conflicts and insecurity, visible via Augmented Reality.

This hybrid urban planning combines with the Renaissance deeply philosophically, forcing us to think about how to achieve connectivity, solidarity and meaningful communities in fragmented cities. Is it possible to live happily and in balance in a place that allows communication and cultivates atmosphere? Can the city, an urban entity, be a source of human values and spirituality? Can philosophy be concerned with how to build cities that are compatible with the greatest aspects of humanity?

In this context, we discover that urban health is a philosophical form that prompts us to search for the basic elements of society and spirituality. We are constantly discussing how cities are designed, socially constructed, and humanly expressed.

Urban morphology is the study of urban forms and of the agents and processes responsible for their transformation over time. Urban form refers to the main physical elements that structure and shape the city including streets, squares, the public space, street blocks, plots, and buildings, to name the most important.

Due to mismanagement and interventions in the upstream of Tigris and Euphrates rivers and their tributaries by riparian countries surface water has become a scarce resource. Iraq’s groundwater could play an important role, but studies corroborated, that the future of groundwater would be similar to that of surface water if it continues to be arbitrarily drained like in present days.

Groundwater misuse was the reason why Sawa Lake has dried up. Furthermore, according to geographical experts, the continuing excessive drilling at great depths will expose the region to frequent earthquakes in the future.

The poster design visualizes tectonic movements. Augmented Reality visualizes our demand: “If we continue to exploit the groundwater, we will affect the internal tectonic environment which will lead to earthquakes in future.

GROUNDWATER MISUSE IN SOUTHERN IRAQ Iraq has abundant surface water resources compared to other countries in the Arabian Peninsula. Due to mismanagement and interventions in the upstream of Tigris and Euphrates rivers and their tributaries by riparian countries surface water has become a scarce resource. Iraq’s groundwater could play an important role, but studies corroborated, that the future of groundwater would be similar to that of surface water if it continues to be arbitrarily drained like in present days.

Groundwater plays an important role especially in desert area such as in the southern desert located in the southern part of Iraq. The Dammam aquifer is one of Iraq’s most important aquifers, located in the west and southwest parts of the country. The Dammam aquifer forms a multi-aquifer system with Umm Er Radhuma aquifer mainly located in Saudi-Arabia.

These two water bearing layers are hydraulically connected. Groundwater moves from west and south in the recharge areas (Saudi Arabia) to the east and the northeast in discharged areas (Iraq). Groundwater level varies from 10m in recharge areas to near surface or artesian in discharge areas. Since the Dammam aquifer has high hydraulic pressure, most of the wells drilled in this aquifer is flowing artesian well.

The newly dried out lake Sawa (2022) depended on groundwater through a flowing artesian well in the lakebed. A well is termed flowing artesian if the water reaches the ground surface under the natural pressure of the aquifer.

The lake was fed by groundwater coming from the artesian zone southeast of the Dammam aquifer.

The unique lake Sawa, which existed for thousands of years, has dried up due to the depletion of groundwater by the salt extraction plant Al Samawah Saltern, which possesses more than nineteen wells of its own, nearby cement plants, in addition to the unauthorized horizontal expansion of agricultural land in the desert. Environmental officials expect the number of wells in the desert to be around three thousand, including unlicensed drilled wells.

The two formations Dammam and Umm Er Radhuma form a multi-aquifer system of confined type which means that the recharge of water is limited.

The excessive depletion of the desert’s water affects the volume of groundwater and the internal tectonic environment, which can cause distortions in the earth’s formation when exposed to imbalances.

According to geographers, the continuing excessive drilling at great depths will expose the region to frequent earthquakes in the future.

It is a snap shot of a distinctive situation. The older generation’s gesture expresses the strengths that Iraq has natural wonders, but in fact, they are treating it unconsciously with contempt. The younger generation is wondering and trying to discover what is in front of them, unconsciously?

How can we protect our natural wonders?

Via AR we demonstrate a solution. Sawa Lake needs a fence to protect what is left, even though the creatures will disappear after a while due to natural and meteorological effects. But, at least it will expand their life time.

Magrood is a character developed by the young painter Tabi. The word describes the disadvantaged, the unfortunates, and the forgotten who neither give benefit nor cause harm to the society or themselves. The painting shows Tabi’s Magrood in the middle of Haifa Street in 2021. She included different elements and symbols that she had found around Haifa Street and that are part of the puzzle of the young generation’s quest: words and numbers written on walls, mirrored; bullet holes visible in the arches and on the building’s facades; the eight-pointed star at the top of the painting, a reminiscence to the former dictatorship era under Saddam Hussein.

Magrood is a character that represent the young generation, searching for identity. Watan, is not the name of a person. Watan means homeland.

Therefore, Magrood is searching for her homeland. The colour green is one of the pan-Arab colours - and part of the Iraqi flag. It stands for purity, fertility, and peace, as well as for hope.

Will Magrood be able to find her Watan?

A BULLET CAN’T KILL OUR COURAGE Poster Design Tarkib Pinky Team The two photo elements in the poster design show moments captured during the 2019 Youth Tishreen Uprising. During a walk on the beach, three persons found the slogan written on a wall “A BULLET CAN’T KILL OUR COURAGE”, which was a message to something tangible in the horizon. Bread is elementary to an adequate nutrition, but our bread is pink. The colour pink is for us a kind of protest, but a protest to bring the world to the better. The poster is signed with: “To the people after 100 years from the date of today: Instant protest. HTA”. Instant protest is a letter font, the ‘weapon’ of a graphic designer. Our instant protest is resistance. Iraq has its experience of instant protests in the past 100 years and will have it in the next 100 years.

Will instant protest change the way how humans deal with nature and customs?

For Lwaa Shams Aldeen there must be smoke. He depicted the underside of the map of Iraq with the two rivers Tigris and Euphrates as Iraq’s pillars, the land between two rivers. Iraq’s pillars are burning as the result of years of turmoil and the new impact of climate change.

Until to the 1950s, the estimated extend of Ahwar Southern Iraq, which is divided into Al Hammar, Central and Al Hawizeh, was 20,000 square kilometers.

In the 1950s, irrigation projects started to promote the agricultural sector in Iraq.

Across the marshes there are many large oil deposits. In the 1970s as an example the full-scale production of the Rumaila field in Al Hammar started.

In the 1980s, during the Iran-Iraq War, several military embankments were created, especially in Al Hawizeh.

After the 1991 Iraqi uprising, former Dictator Saddam Hussein prompted in the south with his large-scale draining project and cultural erasure. The extent of Ahwar was reduced by about 90% by 2000.

In 2003, water flowed ones again, but not with a carefully coordinated program. There is still high soil and water salinity, stemming from the many years the land was dried out.

By 2006, around 39% of the former extend had been recovered and for most of the following decade the extent has remained stable.

Ahwar needs sustained freshwater input to maintain water extent, but that depends on how the water is used upstream. The desiccation of Ahwar is furthermore attributed to extensive damming upstream of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers involving Iraq, Iran, Syria and Turkey, a process that begun in the 1950s and continuing today.

“The role of climate versus upstream water management is hotly debated.

The buildings of dams in upstream countries, such as the Ilisu Dam in Turkey, has led to political confrontation, rivalry and environmental disinformation.”

The water conflict in the Euphrates-Tigris basin has a long history. For centuries, the riparian countries (Iraq, Turkey and Syria) have failed to reach a strategic agreement in water shares, mainly because the region has no strategic vision in terms of an in-depth assessment of challenges and opportunities. Each country only focuses on a national scale, with less attention paid to the bigger picture.

The Euphrates river is the main source to feed Ahwar Southern Iraq. The traces of failed water politics are already visible and tangible. But what happened with the invisible micro-parts of the eco-system?

The structures of these algae mirror exemplary the situation in Ahwar Southern Iraq. Taken from the lake Baghdadiye in the Central Marshes a few kilometers north-east of the city of Shubayish, you can see under microscope the effect of desiccation on biodiversity. The cells have shrunk and many are dead.

PIZZA À LA AHWAR Sculptural Relief Loay Al Hadhary

The relief captures the way of serving food typically for southern Iraq. The main foods are bread and fish, everything what can be provided by mother nature. The circle shape of the bread reminds on a pizza, at least for people from ‘Western cultures’. For Loay Al Hadhary it is more the reminder of ancient traditions, which root back to the Sumerian times, a culture of traditions, that seems to get into oblivion, because the basic elements are disappearing: water and fishes. Once the bread was placed with grilled fish of various kinds which used to live in the Marshes such as Buni, Chalk, Kattan, Khishni, Shabbut etc.

Will the relief be the only reminder?

EXTEND OF AHWAR Intervention in 6. BAGHDAD WALK 2023 Tarkib Collaboration

A banner was placed on an unused electronic advertising display at the beginning of Al Sarafiya Bridge in Al Karkh side. It showed two landsat satellite images from Earthshots comparing the Mesopotamian Marshes in summer 1972 at nearly their maximum extent compared to its remains in summer 2023.

The big-size banner is a reminder of an alarming situation. Iraq’s natural wonder remains vulnerable to upstream dam construction, drainage for agriculture, oil exploration, war, drought, desertification, climate change and international conflict.

REMAINS OF AHWAR SOUTHERN IRAQ The Mesopotamian marshes, named for the historic region defined by the Tigris and Euphrates, lie on a vast, flat floodplain in Southern Iraq where the lower courses of the rivers come together to form an extensive inland delta. The Marshes are divided into three areas: Al Hammar, Central, and Al Hawizeh.

The water that keeps the Marshes alive originate mainly from the precipitation in the Anatolian highlands of Turkey and the Zagros highlands of Iran.

The river flow provides a flooding pulse downstream. In Southern Iraq the land flattens out, the rivers slow and drop sediment, meander, and split into branches before flowing into the Persian Gulf - historically at least.

From 1950s until 1970s, the estimated extend of the Mesopotamian Marshes, also known as Ahwar Southern Iraq, was 15,000-20,000 square kilometers. The marsh wetlands supported the traditional lifestyles of an estimated half a million people, up until the 1950s.

The Marsh Arabs, also known as the Ma’dan or Ahwari, developed a unique culture centered on the marshes’ natural resources, they maintained themselves based on fishing, harvesting reeds, cultivating crops and raising water buffalo. For centuries they lived rather secluded, away from outside influence.

Since the 1960s and the years to follow, oil exploration, upstream dam construction, drainage for agriculture, war and international conflicts, as well as drought and desertification caused by climate change have damaged this valuable ecosystem.

Due to draining of the marshes in the 1980s and 1990s by former Dictator Saddam Hussein the wetlands declined dramatically and their extend was reduced by about 85% by 2000. As a consequence, only around 20.000 of the former half a million Ma’dan remained.

In 2003, when Saddam was defeated by the American-led invasion, the dams, dikes, and levees dug to drain the marshes were demolished. Both the water and the Ma’dan returned

Now, two decades later, at least 70% of the marshes are devoid of water )some sources mention 85%(, again. Dam projects in Turkey, Syria and Iran have reduced the volume of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. The reduced flow from the rivers leads to saltwater intrusion from the Gulf. There is still high soil and water salinity, stemming from the many years the land was dried out. Pollution is rising alongside salination. Sewers, pesticides and waste from factories and hospitals are dumped directly into the rivers along its courses and much of it ends up in the Marshes. Hawizeh and Hammar Marshes have additionally exploited due to its richness on oil reserves.

The drought is now ravaging the marshes for a fourth-consecutive year, which is the worst in 40 years according to the United Nations. Rainfall is rarer and rarer. The World Bank forecasts that in the next 25 years the temperature will go up by an average of 2.5 degree.

Many of the Ma’dan were forced to leave their lands to cities or other regions within Iraq. The UN’s Food and Agricultural Organization )FAO( calls it an “exodus”. Moreover, on arrival in the new destination, the Ma’adan are often treated as pariahs.

The marshes will likely never be the same as they once were. It is unclear how long re-inundated areas will stay that way, considering changing climate, upstream dam projects and humanity’s role in preserving or exploiting nature and its resources.

Both the Ahwar Southern Iraq, and the culture of the Ma’dan have UNESCO world heritage status since 2016.

The situation is alarming. The Ahwar Southern Iraq remain extremely vulnerable. The once natural wonder of Iraq is likely to serve as a haunting example of ecocide, a case of destruction of a natural environment, especially as a result of human activity.

‫واآلن‪ ،‬وبعد عقدين من الزمن‪ ،‬أصبح ما ال يقل عن ‪ %٧٠‬من األهوار خاليا ً من المياه‬ ‫(بعض المصادر تذكر ‪ ،)%8٥‬مرة أخرى‪ .‬أدت مشاريع السدود في تركيا وسوريا وإيران‬ ‫إلى خفض حجم نهري دجلة والفرات‪ .‬ويؤدي انخفاض التدفق من األنهار إلى تسرب‬ ‫المياه المالحة من الخليج‪ .‬وال تزال هناك نسبة عالية من ملوحة التربة والمياه‪،‬‬ ‫نتيجة للسنوات العديدة التي جفت فيها األرض‪ .‬ويرتفع التلوث جنبا إلى جنب مع‬ ‫الملوحة‪ .‬ويتم إلقاء مجاري الصرف الصحي والمبيدات الحشرية ونفايات المصانع‬ ‫والمستشفيات مباشرة في األنهار على طول مجاريها وينتهي معظمها في األهوار‪.‬‬ ‫كما تم استغالل اهوار الحويزة والحمار بسبب غناهما باالحتياطي النفطي‪.‬‬ ‫ويدمر الجفاف اآلن األهوار للعام الرابع على التوالي‪ ،‬وهو األسوأ منذ ‪ 4٠‬عاما وفقا‬ ‫لألمم المتحدة‪ .‬هطول األمطار أكثر ندرة‪ .‬ويتوقع البنك الدولي أن ترتفع درجة الحرارة‬ ‫بمعدل ‪ ٢.٥‬درجة خالل السنوات الخمس والعشرين المقبلة‪.‬‬ ‫واضطر العديد من المعدان إلى ترك أراضيهم والنزوح إلى مدن أو مناطق أخرى‬ ‫داخل العراق‪ .‬وتصف منظمة األغذية والزراعة التابعة لألمم المتحدة (الفاو) ما‬ ‫حدث بأنه ”نزوح جماعي“‪ .‬عالوة على ذلك‪ ،‬عند وصولهم إلى الوجهة الجديدة‪ ،‬غالبا ً‬ ‫ما يتم التعامل مع المعدان على أنهم منبوذون‪.‬‬ ‫من المرجح أال تعود األهوار أبدا كما كانت من قبل‪ .‬ومن غير الواضح إلى متى‬ ‫ستبقى المناطق التي غمرتها المياه على هذا النحو‪ ،‬بالنظر إلى تغير المناخ ومشاريع‬ ‫السدود عند المنبع ودور اإلنسانية في الحفاظ على الطبيعة ومواردها أو استغاللها‪.‬‬ ‫تتمتع كل من أهوار جنوب العراق وثقافة المعدان بموقع التراث العالمي لليونسكو‬ ‫منذ عام ‪.٢٠16‬‬ ‫الوضع مثير للقلق‪ .‬ال تزال منطقة األهوار في جنوب العراق معرضة للخطر للغاية‪.‬‬ ‫من المرجح أن تكون إحدى عجائب العراق الطبيعية بمثابة مثال مؤلم لإلبادة‬ ‫البيئية‪ ،‬وحالة تدمير البيئة الطبيعية‪ ،‬وخاصة نتيجة للنشاط البشري‪.‬‬

‫بقايا اهوار جنوب العراق‬ ‫تقع أهوار بالد ما بين النهرين‪ ،‬والتي سميت على اسم المنطقة التاريخية التي‬ ‫يحدها نهري دجلة والفرات‪ ،‬على سهول فيضانية واسعة ومسطحة في جنوب‬ ‫العراق حيث تتجمع مجاري األنهار السفلية لتشكل دلتا داخلية واسعة النطاق‪.‬‬ ‫وتنقسم األهوار إلى ثالث مناطق‪ :‬الحمار‪ ،‬الوسطى والحويزة‪.‬‬ ‫المياه التي تحافظ على حياة األهوار تأتي بشكل رئيسي من هطول األمطار في‬ ‫مرتفعات األناضول في تركيا ومرتفعات زاكروس في إيران‪ .‬يوفر تدفق النهر نبضا‬ ‫للفيضانات في اتجاه مجرى النهر‪ .‬في جنوب العراق‪ ،‬تتسطح األرض‪ ،‬وتتباطأ األنهار‬ ‫وتسقط الرواسب‪ ،‬وتتعرج‪ ،‬وتنقسم إلى فروع قبل أن تتدفق إلى الخليج العربي‬ ‫تاريخيا على األقل‪.‬‬ ‫منذ الخمسينيات حتى السبعينيات‪ ،‬كان االمتداد المقدر ألهوار بالد ما بين النهرين‪،‬‬ ‫المعروف أيضا باسم أهوار جنوب العراق‪ ،‬يتراوح بين ‪ 1٥,٠٠٠‬إلى ‪ ٢٠,٠٠٠‬كيلومتر مربع‪.‬‬ ‫وقد دعمت األراضي الرطبة في األهوار أنماط الحياة التقليدية لنحو نصف مليون‬ ‫شخص‪ ،‬حتى الخمسينيات من القرن الماضي‪.‬‬ ‫طور عرب األهوار‪ ،‬المعروفون أيضا باسم المعدان أو األهواريين‪ ،‬ثقافة فريدة‬ ‫تتمحور حول الموارد الطبيعية لألهوار‪ ،‬حيث اعتمدوا على صيد األسماك وحصاد‬ ‫القصب وزراعة المحاصيل وتربية جاموس الماء‪ .‬لقد عاشوا لعدة قرون منعزلين إلى‬ ‫حد ما‪ ،‬بعيدا عن التأثيرات الخارجي‪.‬‬ ‫منذ الستينيات والسنوات التي تلتها‪ ،‬أدى التنقيب عن النفط‪ ،‬وبناء السدود عند‬ ‫المنبع‪ ،‬والصرف الزراعي‪ ،‬والحروب والصراعات الدولية‪ ،‬فضال ً عن الجفاف والتصحر‬ ‫الناجم عن تغير المناخ‪ ،‬إلى اإلضرار بهذا النظام البيئي القيم‪.‬‬ ‫بسبب تجفيف األهوار في الثمانينيات والتسعينيات على يد الدكتاتور صدام حسين‪،‬‬ ‫انخفضت األراضي الرطبة بشكل كبير وانخفض امتدادها بحوالي ‪ %8٥‬بحلول عام‬ ‫‪ .٢٠٠٠‬ونتيجة لذلك‪ ،‬لم يبق سوى حوالي ‪ ٢٠.٠٠٠‬من المعدان البالغ عددهم سابقا‬ ‫نصف مليون‪.‬‬ ‫وفي عام ‪ ،٢٠٠٣‬عندما هزم الغزو الذي قادته الواليات المتحدة صدام حسين‪ ،‬تم‬ ‫هدم السدود التي تم حفرها لتجفيف األهوار‪ .‬وعاد كل من الماء والمعدان‪.‬‬

‫ليفتي‬ ‫عمل فني نسيجي‬ ‫حسام محمد‬ ٢٠٢٣ ‫معرض بغداد ووك النسخة السادسة‬ ‫عبارة عن عمل نسيجي مستطيل مصنوع من الليفة وهي اداة نموذجية تستخدم‬ ‫ انها الفتة الفنان االحتجاجية للمطالبة بالمياه‬.‫لغسل ظهر المواطنين العراقيين‬ ‫ ويستخدم العراقيون منذ سنوات مياه االغتسال الملوثة بالنفط ومياه‬.‫النظيفة‬ ‫الصرف الصحي التي تشكل مصدرا ً هاما ً للعديد من االمراض التي يعاني منها‬ .‫العراقيون‬ ‫ تم تلوين احدى الليف باللون االخضر الداكن‬،‫في وسط الفتة االحتجاج الخاصة به‬ ‫ لقد اخذ اللون من اختبارنا المختبري‬.‫بينما تظل االجزاء االخرى بلونها الطبيعي‬ ‫ واشارت نتائج االختبار الى ان المياه غير‬.‫الذي يفحص جودة مياه نهر دجلة القريب‬ .‫صالحة للشرب والغسل‬ ‫ماذا ستفعل اذا لم يكن لديك ماء والقليل من الماء المتبقي ملوث؟‬

MY LEEFE Textile Work from an intervention in 6. BAGHDAD WALK 2023 Hussam Mohammed MY LEEFE is a rectangle textile work made out of typical Iraqi back scrubbers. It is the artist’s protest banner to demand clean water and sanitation.

Iraqis have, for years now, been using water for washing that is contaminated with feces, oil, and wastewater which is a significant source of many diseases that Iraqis suffer from.

In the center of his protest banner, one back scrubber is coloured in dark green while the others remain in their natural colour. He took the colour from our laboratory test examining the quality of the water of the Tigris river nearby. The test results indicated that the water quality is not safe for drinking and washing.

What will you do, if you do not have water and the little bit of water left is polluted?

AL SHESME Photo Series of an intervention in 6. BAGDAD WALK 2023 Taqi Mohammed Taqi Mohammed’s performance started when he leant over the railing of Al Sarafiya Bridge to pull up a bucket full of water from the Tigris river. He lifted the bucket to the other side of the railing and put it to ground. Exhausted from the heavy load he rested, before exploring his catch. He caught five files cards of corpses found dead in the Tigris, with information about each case and photos of potential evidence. Shocked about his findings he left the scene.

What is the life, the story and the reason for each death? Why does the river carry corpses, some discovered, some unnoticed?

The title refers to Ahmed Al Saadawi’s novel “Frankenstein in Baghdad”. The novel centers on Hadi’s monster-like creation who he calls Whatsitsname in English or Al Shesme in Arabic. Hadi collected pieces of corpses, remnants of different violence acts that represent every part of the Iraqi community and stitched together a composite corpse.

‫الشسمه‬ ‫سلسة صور من التداخل الفني في معرض بغداد ووك النسخة السادسة ‪٢٠٢٣‬‬ ‫تقي محمد‬ ‫بدأ العرض االدائي لتقي محمد عندما انحنى على سياج جسر الصرافية ليسحب‬ ‫دلوا ً مليئا ً بالمياه من نهر دجلة‪ .‬رفع الدلو الى الجانب االخر من السور ووضعه على‬ ‫االرض‪ .‬استراح منهكا ً من الحمل الثقيل قبل استكشاف صيده‪ .‬عثر على خمس‬ ‫بطاقات تعبر عن ملفات للجثث التي عثر عليها ميتة في نهر دجلة‪ ،‬مع معلومات عن‬ ‫كل حالة وصور لالدلة المحتملة‪ .‬صدم من النتائج التي توصل اليها وغادر المكان‪.‬‬ ‫ما هي الحياة وقصة وسبب كل وفاة؟ لماذا يحمل النهر جثثا بعضها مكتشف‬ ‫والبعض االخر ال يالحظه احد؟‬ ‫يشير العنوان الى رواية احمد السعداوي ”فرانكشتاين في بغداد“ تركز الرواية على‬ ‫مخلوق يسمى هادي الشبيه بالوحش والذي يسميه الشمسة باللغة العربية‪ .‬قام‬ ‫هادي بجمع قطع الجثث‪ ،‬وبقايا اعمال العنف المختلفة التي تمثل كل جزء من‬ ‫المجتمع العراقي وقام بخياطة جثة مركبة معاً‪.‬‬

LOST ERA Installation Sculpture Ayşe

In ancient times, a civilization existed from which all other civilizations extended. It was the gateway to science and architecture. Through its products, it represented for us the first urban fabric in the entire world. This was “our Babylon.” After that, Ashurbanipal came to prepare for us the extension of our civilization and our first cradle. He was there to document it. A product of our era in order to prove to the world our era at that time, here we represented Ur, and today Baghdad came to us to convey to us everything that happened, but in its own way, as we have always known it The work represents Babylon, as it was the first city in the whole world whose urban fabric was designed, followed by Sumer and Ur. And all civilizations followed suit, and today Baghdad has become the last city qualified to live, so it moved from the civilization of the first people to the last people, and the reason for this was )man( who built the first city in existence and who later destroyed it with his own hand.

The main reason for this is the partial view of things, meaning that we as humans rarely try to see the complete picture - as if we looked at the three liras combined - so we ignore the truth, turning a blind eye to it, focusing our entire gaze on the disassembled part of the picture, and this happens later.

That we perceive the whole picture, but after the catastrophe occurred.

The first lira reflects the city of Babylon and Ur - the spaces between the cities - while the second reflects the main buildings in the city, and for the latter it represents the main borders and the main line of the city. As for the Baghdad lira, the first lira is the river, the second are the main branch lines in the city, and the last expresses the buildings in Baghdad, extending to its suburbs.

This publication was printed on the occasion of CYCLE - UDHR75 COLLECTIVE EXHIBITION FOR ARTIVISM which was held from November 23 to 30, 2023.
