Dear Parents, Alumni, Sponsors, and Fans of Newport Harbor Football.
And welcome guests that are sitting on the “home side” this year as CdM and Newport Harbor both call Davidson Field their home field and each year the schools alternate sides.
Tonight’s matchup will be a spirited one.
The Battle of the Bay has been a great rivalry, mostly dominated by Newport Harbor, but not recently. The Sailors are hopeful this year to turn the tables on a nine-year drought.
A lot of these kids have played against one another since “Pop Warner” (or Junior All American) years. This means neigh borhood bragging rights are on the line.
Like all rivalries, let’s just say this game has a history.
The first Battle of the Bay was back in 1963.
Newport Harbor won that game 13-12 in a hard-fought contest at Davidson Field, and afterward, students from both schools were reportedly listening to “My Boyfriend’s Back” by The Angels on their way to post-game soda pop.
The following year (1964) the Sea Kings responded by shutting out the
Sailors, 20-0.
Fast forward to tonight (October 21, 2022) and Newport Harbor enjoys a 38-22 series advantage as the Back Bay rivals square off tonight in the 61st clash. HOWEVER, the Sea Kings have won nine straight against the Sailors.
There are also playoff seedings on the line. As of this writing, it appears both Newport Harbor and Corona del Mar will make the playoffs, but the winner of tonight’s game certainly has momentum going into the postseason.
It sure is nice to see two competitive teams on the field… as it should be. It’s not possible to see this kind of progress without the proper resources. This is where the booster club finds its purpose… to make sure the program has the neces sary resources to help the kids reach their full potential.
A huge “Thank You” to those that have given in the past (both time and mon ey) in support of all these neighborhood kids. The program simply would not be possible without the generosity of the Newport/Mesa community.
As this season comes to a close, we are already starting to enlist sponsors for next year (2023). If you own a business, consider being a sponsor of the team. We have sponsorships that range from
$90.00 to $9,000.00 – literally some thing for everyone/anyone. Just email me at: JLavin@TarFootball.com and we’ll send you the information.
The Newport Harbor Football Boosters is a 501(c)(3) non-profit (Federal Tax ID # 33-0010005) and your donation is tax-de ductible, or we can give you a marketing invoice. Our mission, as a booster club, is to provide resources to Coach Lofthouse and his staff to keep building Newport Harbor High School Football into one of the most respected public-school football programs in the country for our student-athletes. ALL PARENTS of the NHHS Football program are members of the booster club and we encourage you to get and stay involved.
Our current board of directors is: Michelle Beckman, Jim Regitz, Michelle Showalter, Patrick (P.J.) Brennan, Amy Denoon, and Scott Fontana. Our treasurer is Deborah Jensen.
Thank you so much, and GO TARS! O
Jason Lavin, Booster Club President ‘18 ‘19 ‘20 ‘21 ‘22 JLavin@TarFootball.comThere is no greater football tradition in Newport Beach than Battle of the Bay.
Tonight is the 61st football game of Newport Harbor vs. Corona del Mar.
The rivalry stems back to 1963 when the Sailors outlasted the Sea Kings by a score of 13-12 at Davidson Field. While we had two losses in a row (Los Alamitos and Edison) the team got back on track last week vs. Fountain Valley, and we enter tonight’s event with a respectable 5-3 record. What’s notable to me is that in a game like this, everything resets to zero. The enthusiasm of the school is off the charts. Games like this are high school football at its best.
We are the visiting team this year, so the TAR PIT will be in full force from the vis itor’s sidelines. But regardless of what side you’re on tonight (realize several Sea Kings will pick up this program) I know the students and fans will impress with sportsman ship on both sides of the ball. More evidence that we live in one of the greatest commu nities in the nation.
As the football season is coming to an end (we have one more regular season game at ‘Cap’ Sheue Field vs. Huntington Beach next week), I am thankful to Coach Lofthouse and his staff for another outstanding year. I would also like to thank John Hoist and the TAR TV program for streaming the games so our elderly fans (and people remote) can enjoy watching the games.
Thank you to the many businesses and individuals that have pledged their support for the Newport Harbor High School Football program. We could not do this without your support.
Let’s all demonstrate GRATEFUL to be apart of this great school and community by supporting the players in GIVING OUR BEST on the following fronts:
n Let’s show OUR BEST RESPECT to the hard work and competitive spirit of our young men and women as they compete—by modeling good sportsmanship and proper decorum at all of our games and events.
n Let’s offer OUR BEST HOSPITALITY to the guests that we host at Davidson Field. We have the most beautiful high school setting in all the land (just look up at the sky at kickoff). Let’s be thankful for that and make sure our guests feel welcome.
n Finally, let’s give OUR BEST EFFORT in all things we do as Sailors, whether that be on the field, in the classroom, or around the community.
Finally, I would like to thank the dedicated alumni and fans of Newport Harbor High School that have come out to root on the team, band, and cheer. Go Sailors! O
Welcome to the Battle of the Bay. Thank you, students, parents, and fans for supporting the program. The players really feed off the energy (and so do the coaches).
Tonight we play our rivals, Corona del Mar. They bring with them a solid 6-2 record. They also bring with them a nineyear winning streak in this neighborhood game. Our players are hoping to spoil that streak tonight.
You can expect a good game tonight, so, again, thank you for being here. As always, my hope is that in addition to a spirited game (and a TarBall win) that the sportsmanship on the field represents Newport Harbor High School and what our community stands for.
Finally, even though we’ll be on the visiting sidelines tonight, make sure you stay until the end when we sing our alma mater.
In case you’re not sure of the words, here is a study guide:
“Hail, our Alma Mater, to her grey and blue; We give her love and honor for her spirit’s true. (it’s true)
Our loyalty to Harbor High ever will our standard be. We’ll fight for the night, so hail Harbor High!”
I’d like to thank Dr. Boulton and the administration, teachers, and booster club for taking such an interest in the football program. Let’s play some football. O
Peter Lofthouse, Head Football CoachGetting a few minutes with Coach Peter Lofthouse is easier than you might think.
After spending more than eight years at the JUCO ranks, including a historic season at San Diego’s Mesa College where in three short years the program went from 3-7 to 9-2 and won its first bowl game in over 30 years, Coach Loft house has settled into Newport Harbor High School and is our 5th year head football coach.
“Anytime someone wants to talk about what we’re trying to accomplish at Newport Harbor,” Coach Lofthouse says, “I’m Interested.”
Coach Lofthouse believes that the game of football, at the high school level, is a teaching tool and an oppor tunity to change the lives of young men through experience. It’s a unique opportunity for teenagers to not only learn values that work on the football field, but any athletic field… and more importantly, values that they can instill into their lives well beyond their high school years.
These values are called “The 5 F’s” and it’s instilled in EVERYTHING we do.
Faith in yourself. Faith in your team mates. Faith in your coaches. BUY IN to what we’re doing on this football team.
Protecting your immediate family (e.g. Mom, Dad, siblings, relatives) as well in cluding your teammates as your family.
Aligning with buddies that have high morals and good character. Friends (and teammates) that hold each other accountable for their actions.
Having fun and playing hard and play ing to the best of your ability.
Finishing everything you start. Whether it be homework, a test or “playing until the whistle” – give it your best effort.
No one likes having plumbing issues. The most minor issues will strain or interrupt your daily routine; the worst problems can do expensive amounts of damage very quickly. It’s important to have a local plumber who is always ready to help. Justin Time Plumbing has been serving Orange County for over 15 years and prides itself on providing trustworthy and prompt service.
Call us at (714) 336-5076 24 hours a day, seven days a week for service.
Tonight we salute our senior players, pep squad, and band members in their final regular season home game of 2022.
TarBall wishes all NHHS seniors the best of luck in their future endeavors!

The past few months have been a complete blessing. So thankful for this community. As many of you know, I was diagnosed with Cancer earlier this year. As I was being turned inside out physically, I did not realize how God planned to turn me inside out spiritually. This experience has me working toward becoming my best self – more love, more laughter, more appreciation, more giving back.
I am eternally grateful to my wife, 3 boys, family and this amazing Newport Harbor community of neighbors, fellow coaches, new friends, Harbor Hotties, school administration, fans, refs, players (former and current) and parents who showered me with support, love and most importantly prayer to pull me through a difficult time. What a wonderful community – I am grateful to each of you for your kindness and support.
I pray that we take time to appreciate and love one another and not wait until our back is to the wall before becoming our best self. “And as for me and my house, we will serve the lord.”
Once a beast, always a beast – keep it up and great things will continue to come your way. We love you!
