crossroads campground kansas city, missouri fall 2015

Crossroads Campground is a project about community, about building lasting relationships and exposing new professions and people to each other. Located in the heart of Kansas City, this collaborative building will bring together local craftsmen and entrepreneurs alike. This project has three major elements to it: various fabrication labs for manufacturing and creating, varied office spaces for collaboration and innovation, and shared spaces- like a lobby, gallery, and event space- to build community and encourage interaction. Throughout the design process, keeping the views open to major landmarks like the Kauffman Center and the Kansas City skyline was important. Ease of circulation around and through the site was also a major consideration. The main entrance was located along Central St. with a permeable lobby open to the alley in the back. A circulation spine bridges across the lobby atrium and runs through the middle of the building, connecting it all together.

The hub is the place where people first enter into the building. Here they can see glimpses of what others at the Campground are working on and gather to provoke crossdisciplinary work and engagement. It serves multiple purposes: to enter, to gather, to interact, and to circulate.

The cell was developed very early on in the project, coming from the desire to separate and give ownership to each individual function of the diverse programmatic needs. By separating the functions of space, people would be able to get a more meaningful experience geared towards their personal goals at the Campground.

The spine cuts the building in half, with cells on either side, creating a hallway that allows users to circulate seamlessly throughout the building. The cells open up into the hallway, which can also be used to display artwork and projects from occupants of the Campground.

sunrise crematorium manhattan, kansas fall 2014

Sunrise Crematorium will be the first municipal crematorium in Manhattan, Kansas. Through the study of ritual, place, and tectonics, a design solution was created to facilitate the grieving and renewing process of cremation. A large steel structural grid lays atop the crematorium, symbolizing the weight of the matter at hand. The beams are attached to six columns, and the crematorium is wrapped in a delicate glazed skin. This light layer seems to float in space, giving visual relief from the overbearing roof, and allowing the passage of light into the space. The core of the building is where the major cremation processes take place. This core is clad in slate, a rock created through thermal metamorphism- mirroring the process that occurs inside. All administrative and preparatory activities are kept to the basement, out of sight and out of mind from the guests.

Once guests enter the complex, sunlight- coming in through the skylight above- embraces guests and shines down on a memorial of their loved one. As they move on, they take a seat in the ceremony hall, where a service in memorial to their loved one is facilitated. Daylight and views from the windows give friends and family space to reflect. Afterwards, they circulate around the crematorium core of the building to the committal area, where they are encouraged to say their last goodbyes before the cremation process starts. Since this process can take some time, a waiting area and balcony are just around the corner, allowing the guests to mourn in their own ways. Once the cremation has finished, guests are taken to the columbarium,

where they are reunited with the ashes of their loved ones. A reflecting pool runs the length of the journey to the final resting place of the loved one, where they reside inside the mausoleum-like structure. The whole complex is placed along a datum, which lights up the building and columbarium on the winter and summer solstices, giving friends and family an occasion to celebrate the life of their loved ones.

martin puryear museum new york city, new york spring 2015

Martin Puryear is an African American artist that is known for his use of traditional woodworking techniques in his sculptures. He often works in wood and materials that can be shaped and formed by hand. The museum itself consists of a variety of galleries for his pieces of art, as well as some gallery spaces for visiting artists. A cafÊ and gift shop are located in the basement off of the adjacent sunken plaza. A research lab, library, and auditorium are also integrated to provide educational opportunities. A thematic similarity between many of Puryear’s works shows the notion of weaving and interlocking materials. This weaving idea manifested itself in many aspects of the museum design. The façade has a weaving geometry that opens or closes itself depending on the lighting needs of the adjacent interior space. The galleries are woven throughout several floors of the building and flow from one to another. The administrative and archival spaces were placed at the top floors of the building to allow for uninterrupted gallery space below.

18

This one-artist museum, located in the heart of the SoHo district in New York City, had been designed and created for renowned artist Martin Puryear. The design allows the occupants to experience his artwork as a journey. The site is on the corners of Houston, Lafayette, and Crosby streets, which allows for 3 faces of the façade to be viewed from multiple angles. The building is pushed back to align with the building to the west of our site to keep the urban street wall, and allow for the Puck building to the east to still be seen uninterrupted. 20

At the front of the site is a plaza that recedes into the ground, right next to the subway entrances. The cafĂŠ can spill out into the plaza, which also displays several pieces of artwork. It also helps draw passersby into the museum from the busy street corners. The south wall of the museum abuts the building behind it, so the services spaces are pushed against this wall throughout the building.

The building’s form lines up with surrounding structures. The facade is pushed back to allow view of the Puck building next to it.

The ground level entrance is for gallery admission and the below-grade entrance is for the cafe. Subway stops, plus busy streets, allow for maximum exposure to patrons.

The building facade is a ‘woven’ design as to imitate Martin Puryear’s works. The first two layers are created from CorTen steel with a layer of glass behind it.

A variety of single and double height spaces with different functions were woven together throughout the building, with a circulation bar connecting them in the back. 21

atlanta 2040 atlanta, georgia in progress

The 5th year graduate architecture studio- taught by Nathan Howe together with HOK Kansas City- has worked on a Master Plan for downtown Atlanta, GA. The goal is to rethink major issues in their aging infrastructure. This phased proposal looks at key issues in Atlanta today, specifically at a site known to the locals as “The Gulch. This vast sea of asphalt in the middle of the city is plagued by intersecting railways and a steep topographic landscape that makes it undesirable to the local population. In Atlanta, the downtown core has been rebuilt upon itself vertically in layers, leaving the concrete skeleton of the old city beneath the roads and city blocks above. This underground jungle has been long forgotten, but is now being challenged by this studio. In part, this studio has spent the semester analyzing, interpreting, and resolving major issues that were realized, such as the railroads, topography changes, and lacking commercial and residential areas. Without these amenities, the downtown core will continue in its downward spiral. While embracing the issues head-on, the studio aims to turn problems into creative solutions. By taking advantage of grade changes and neglected infrastructure, we have worked to link the city back together again.

24

problems in atlanta Our site is located on the dividing line that separates Atlanta socio-economically. In the upper half, infrastructure growth and job growth is climbing. Midtown and Buckhead are prominent neighborhoods in the north that are economical centers of the city, with thousands of available jobs for residents. The people who reside here have high incomes and the majority race is white. Below the dividing line, the growth of the city is minimal, with the majority of the population being black and of a low-income status. Neighborhoods like Sweet Auburn and Cabbagetown are home to a large number of impoverished families, due to lack of jobs, infrastructure, and good education.

Stable Growth high income white majority

slow Growth low income black majority

This divide within Atlanta has been present almost since its conception, though progress has been made over the years. Through our master plan, we plan to bridge the gap, and begin diversifying a new standard in Atlanta.

train disconnect Several freight and subway lines disconnect horizontal movement on the ground level, prohibiting movement across the site.

gulch disconnect The gulch is an area of the city that is characterized by sunken city blocks. A 35 foot drop from street level to ‘gulch’ level disconnects street life to the ground beneath.

abandoned properties A high level of vacancies have left the downtown area full of dilapidated properties untouched for many years. These properties hurt pedestrian and cultural life in the city’s core.

empty surface lots In downtown, surface parking lots are plaguing the downtown landscape. These lots are impermeable, leaving little space for stormwater to drain, as well as not catering to pedestrian and street life.

27

goals & master plan re-inhabit To reinhabit Atlanta, we will work to provide more housing and lodging around the downtown core and gulch area.

re-unite To reunite Atlanta, we will provide more green connections to the rest of the city and to the BeltLine using existing infrastructure from the raillines.

re-link To relink our site, we will address the disconnection issues of the gulch with strategies to reconnect the missing links.

re-claim To reclaim our site, we will look at current vacancies and problems in downtown and work on adaptively renovating dilapidated sites.

re-use To reuse water in our site, we will implement a strategy for collecting and cleaning water while giving water access to the public.

adaptive-reuse bazaar Within the master plan, each student in the studio will be responsible for choosing and designing one building that contributes to the master plan. Starting with programming and ending with design development, a holistic understanding of the design process is achieved from start to finish. At this point, the designs have been worked through programming, site analysis, and pre-design; schematic design and design development will be worked on throughout the spring 2017 semester. The building in the master plan that I will be individually focusing on is an adaptive-reuse bazaar. It is intended to be a one-stop destination where many functions come together to serve a holistic environment. This mixed-use building integrates food, retail, office, support, and housing under one roof. These will be the pillars on which the project is designed by.

Existing Norfolk Southern Building

30

The site of the bazaar is the former offices of the Norfolk Southern railway company, which have been abandoned for around 10 years. The 260,000 square foot building is located in the central core of downtown, a prime location with plenty of storefront space along the street and park. To help lower the vacancy rate, an adaptive reuse approach will be taken when re-hauling this building. The building has a large footprint with ample space to house a bazaar, offices, and housing within. The location of this building is close to public transit and major destinations throughout downtown, which will bring more people to the marketplace. This site also connects to the new Beltline Promenade, a linear park and entertainment node in downtown that reconnects the fabric of the city.

scheme 1: linking

The Linking scheme focuses on erasing the barrier between Spring Street and the Beltline Promenade. Next, the Thresholds idea organizes spaces vertically and deals with a space within a space. Lastly, the Cascade design tries to unite the building within its own fabric. Though each design takes a drastically different approach, the three ideas try to achieve some of the same goals of connectivity throughout the site and the building.

OfďŹ ce Housing

Considering all the prior research and analysis is vital when moving from a planning phase to a design phase. Throughout pre-design, three schemes have been developed, named Linking, Thresholds, and Cascade. With each design, site analysis and adjacencies were considered heavily. A strong connection between the street and the Beltline Promenade was the first priority. Next, a focus on reconnecting throughout the building vertically and horizontally was key to creating a cohesive design.

The following projects focus on the use of visual and digital techniques of communication. Throughout my studies, a focus on graphic design, layout, and visual media has been a core value that I hold in high regard. Through varied academic, professional, and personal experiences, I have become intrigued with how visuals affect the environment around us. Each new project is a challenge, and with an adventurous attitude and thorough experimentation I strive to find the right composition for each narrative.

n eue n ation algalerie The Neue Nationalgalerie, nestled in the heart of Berlin, is one of Mies’ last great projects. Completed only a year before he passed away, it was a keystone project in his efforts to create reductionist modern architecture in an urban context. The new memorial in his honor is placed to complement not only the museum, but to pay homage to Mies.

A M E M OR I A L TO M IE S Ludwig Mies van der Rohe has been one of the most celebrated and prolific architects of the 20th century. His legacy extends throughout the modern world as a pioneer in his style. His minimalistic attitude towards architecture inspired the ideas of many. In the memorial pavilion, the design is inspired by the strict grid-like designs that Mies often 1 leaned towards . The movement and function through the pavilion is simple and provides 2 a space to reflect on the gallery and it’s surroundings . This pavilion’s repetitive nature 3 reflects on the great structure and monolithic design of the Neue Nationalgalerie .
