Taranaki company Wells Group will continue its vision to be the independent service provider of choice in electrical, instrumentation, automation, and energy field services as it revamps its leadership structure.

“My aim right now is to continue to contribute towards the Wells organisation being well regarded and respected into the future as I hand the leadership reins over,” says Graham Wells, who started the company with his brother Brian in 1984; not the year of Big Brother but the time of Think Big. In Taranaki that meant the growth of the oil and gas industry, including the construction of the synthetic-petrol plant at Motunui and other developments.

“We both wanted to be involved in service provision in the instrumentation and electrical space, where we focused on growing a good reputation,” the Executive Director says.

“We started in a garage at the back of a property in Brooklands – as our longserving accountant, Steve Waite, likes to remind me.”

Wells began with a few staff – and grew.

Brian left the company in the early 1990s, to work in the international oil and gas realm.

“We have diversified over the years. A huge amount of our work is now outside of Taranaki – probably 80 to 90 per cent.

But we are a Taranaki-based company, our head office is here, and a large number of our support services are based here,” says Graham, from the company’s premises on Borrell Ave, Westown.

During subsequent years, the business has expanded, working on projects all over New Zealand, specialising in instrumentation, electrical, automation, field services and revenue metering.

It hit its peak in size about 2010 when the Wells’ workforce swelled to 700.

Along with the Motunui synthetic fuel plant, other big jobs have included the Kupe Development in South Taranaki, dairy company site developments across the country, including in the South Island, projects within various other industrial sectors and redevelopment work after the earthquakes in Christchurch.

“We are currently in the final stages of our involvement with the Tauhara geothermal power station development in Taupō, where we peaked with about 120 Wells people on the project.”

For Graham, the most important aspect of running the company is straightforward: “Keeping our people safe and looking after their physical and mental wellbeing.”

There is also an emphasis on whānau.

“We are a family business . . . we provide the income for our people to feed their families, not just the employee.”

Graham says his family have all been involved with the company. Son Hayden, is on the executive leadership team based in Auckland, daughter Rochelle worked for the company during her university years and wife Cathrine has worked for the business in various jobs.

“She continues to contribute towards the success of the business in a support role.” Many of our staff have their family members join them in working within the business.

Over the past 39 years, Wells has adapted its practices to embrace the digital revolution. “It’s important to keep up with technology. We have invested heavily in workflow systems that add value to deliver great customer and employee experiences,” he says.

“More recently we have developed load management software and protocols for electric vehicle-charging systems that are proving extremely popular with our customers.”

CEO Justin Peterson, who joined the Wells Group in April 2022, says the company is in good health. “We have just under 450 skilled staff and a large number of subcontractors across New Zealand – we’ve grown by 20% in the past 12 months,” he says.

“We are proud of the fact we are supporting New Zealand’s energy transition through building renewable infrastructure and the much-needed electric vehicle charging networks and

In October last year, the Wells executive team worked on a new detailed strategy based on Graham’s long-held vision of Wells being the service independent service provider of choice.

Justin says the strategy embraces the company’s four key pillars of safety and wellness, customer service, sustainability, plus people and culture.

The father of four from Invercargill says action plans have been put in place around each pillar to support the strategy.

That has included building on partnerships with new, existing and potential clients.

“Graham has built the business around partnerships as a whole – it’s working with the client directly to build that trust and give them certainty that Wells is going to provide a great service at the right cost with great health, safety and quality outcomes.”

Justin has been involved in the power industry for over 20 years, initially as an electrical trades person, and has held executive management roles for the past 10 years. “The thing that gets me up every day is knowing I can influence people to improve themselves or further their career, and I know that Graham has a similar view. We both get a real kick out of seeing people succeed – that’s a real driver of success,” says Justin. “My philosophy is that if people are succeeding in an organisation, the organisation will thrive.”

Te Rina, of Taranaki, Tainui, Hineuru and Te Atiawa descent, was the Executive Manager at WITT | Te Pūkenga for about eight years.

It was a role she flourished in, but she still had inner doubts.

“I always had the imposter syndrome and (questioned) how to approach different situations around staff,” she says.

According to business.govt.nz, imposter syndrome often affects people who are driven and successful.

“It’s characterised by a sense of dread or anxiety that you’ll be found out as a fraud who doesn’t deserve your success.”

Te Rina managed the Board, the Chief Executive, management team and all the administration, including having the administrators of WITT’s four schools reporting to her.

“Because I like to get my fingers in all the pies, I was involved in operations across the campus.”

During this time, she had three babies and was supported to return to work by her partner, Darren Roebuck, who left his job to care for their pēpi (babies).

In 2021, she chose to do WITT’s NZ Certificate in Business in First Line Management (Level 4). “I felt like a bit of a refresher and because I worked here for so long, I never had time to have a qualification,” she says, although that’s how her time at WITT began, but we’ll get to that.

“I took on 10 new staff then, so I decided I needed to do something,” she says.

The programme, led by tutor Linda Cox, involved twoday block courses three times a year, during which Te Rina says she learned invaluable lessons on “how to approach my staff in different situations, including disciplinary. I had issues with staff and that (the course) was really helpful”.

Te Rina also learnt about setting up professional development plans for her staff and “how to shift them into a different phase of thinking in terms of their working style and building up their confidence”.

“I wanted them to be a certain level, so I put my whole team through this – it was part of their KPIs to do the course. They all grew from being average administrators to owning their areas and building up their own skills.”

But working towards the certificate, Te Rina learnt her most valuable lesson – that she was the real deal, was already doing the job and even leading change.

She took a year out of her Executive Manager role to help WITT move from a paper-and-post enrolment system to a digital automation enrolment process. “If I see a better way of doing something, I will do it. That was one of my highlights – it took a long time and a lot of convincing.”

Te Rina even took her team to Whitirea and Weltec (now Te Pūkenga) in Wellington to see digital enrolments in action. “This polytech can do it and they aren’t broken.”

She also helped organise the graduation ceremonies every year and delighted in seeing kaimahi Māori (staff) and rangatahi become graduates, especially “all the ones who thought they would never make it”.

In February 2022, it was her turn to cross the stage to receive her Certificate in Business in First Line Management. “I recommend all administrators should do it for their personal growth and to get them to the next level. That’s why I got my team to do it and so they had a qualification if they ever left WITT.” Te Rina began working for WITT in 2014, after completing a Certificate in Business Administration at the polytech. “Then the teachers put me forward for a job here,” she says, sitting in Te Kāuta Café at the bottom of B Block on the Bell St campus.

Earlier this year, she left WITT, equipped with experience, a qualification and a taonga – a pounamu double-headed breastplate Manaia which she wears with pride. The gift represents strength, leadership and protection.

In June, she became an Executive Assistant at Te Whatu Ora Health New Zealand, for Director Workforce Planning and Development, supporting the future growth of the health workforce.

“I work for John Snook,” she says of the former WITT Chief Executive, who led the institution from January 2019 to November 2022.

“Always having his support really grew my confidence in doing what I needed to do. That’s why I followed him – he’s not a hierarchical boss. We are all just people.”

The 38-year-old says she’s still involved in education, making sure the degrees within health, nationwide, are fit for purpose and appropriate for the future of the workforce.

The learning-focused wāhine toa, who went to Spotswood Primary, Devon Intermediate and New Plymouth Girls’ High Schools, is also on the school board at Waitara East Primary School.

“I’m always looking to do better for myself, my family and always have Māori success at front of mind.”

LA NUOVA – SUPREME WINNER 2023

LA NUOVA – A THIRD GENERATION FAMILY-FOUNDED BUSINESS - WAS NAMED AS TARANAKI’S TOP BUSINESS FOR 2023 AT THE AWARDS EVENING IN NOVEMBER. Bosses at laundromat technology leader La Nuova have dedicated their Supreme Business Excellence Award to a longtime staff member who lost her battle with cancer recently.

Brad is third generation in the family-founded business, which has a team of 86 and a state-of-the-art factory based in Inglewood.

La Nuova managing director Brad Craig says Bev Stewart was with the business for more than 24 years. “She was the epitome of our values – she worked hard, played hard. She was just a beautiful lady and I think it’s beautiful timing that we’ve taken this award out just days after she’s passed away – so this is for her.”

General manager Bevan Broughton said he was rapt with the accolades. “For 25 years, we’ve been entering awards, probably four or five times. I’m rapt for the team – they have put so much work into it. This is everything for our people.”

New Zealand’s most automated laundromat not only won the top award at the annual TSB Taranaki Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Awards on November 11.

The company also took out two other categories – Business Continuity and Technology – and was highly commended in two others – Innovation and Large Business “I think you’ve been up here about four times already,” said TV3 newsreader Samantha Hayes, who was MC and unofficial suitcollar straightener for the awards, held at the TSB Stadium.

Business Excellence Awards judges said La Nuova stood out because of its ability to adapt to the environment and stay ahead of the competition.

“While traditional dry-cleaning volumes have declined, La Nuova has been able to move into linen services and grow significantly,” they said.

“The investment in technology and automation is impressive, enabling the business to process high volumes and provide services to a new category of clients. The business leaders know every aspect of the operation and are prepared to take strategic risks to future proof the business.”

Terry was completely sideswiped by the announcement. “You sort of get shell shocked and all I want is a martini,” says Terry, after being honoured for his sustained leadership and contribution to business in Taranaki on November 11.

He says Terry has been chair of the Art in Public Places Trust, and involved with the Govett-Brewster Foundation and Len Lye Centre. “He was a vocal supporter of the Wind Wand installation – so much so, that he even had it tattooed on his arm.”

“Thank you very much. You’ve heard it all; I haven’t done half of what he said,” says Terry, downplaying the words of Stratford District Mayor Neil Volzke, who announced the award.

Neil says the Nice Hotel and restaurant has won multiple hospitality and tourism awards, Terry has served as a mentor to many, and has long been a strong supporter of the business community and organisations.

At the TSB Taranaki Chamber of Commerce Business Awards, Neil says Terry is a passionate advocate for Taranaki, whose service to the community is far reaching in many areas.

“This includes sponsorship, fundraising and support for the visual and performing arts, WOMAD, (Centuria) Taranaki Garden Festival, St Mary’s Cathedral, the angiography machine and purpose-built suite at the Taranaki Base Hospital, and provision of thousands of free lunches to children at low decile schools.”

Tim Waite moved from the hospitality industry into training, then coaching, because he knew there had to be a better way to perform, lead, overcome challenges and thrive.

“The hospitality industry made me really think about people’s behaviour – what makes people tick,” he says. I’d ask myself “Why do I act the way I do and why do others act the way they do . . . those dynamics – how does that work in a team?”

He also realised that in workplace situations sometimes he was the problem and sometimes other people were.

“How do you overcome a lot of these challenges?”

For the Hāwera-born man it all comes down to how people connect with each other.

His Tim Waite Coaching website says: “Create a place where relationships thrive ‘because talent doesn’t work alone’.”

His coaching business is built on three pillars.

First is leadership development, which he does through the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce and by using tools backed by over 40 years of validated research from international leadership company Blanchard – The Heart of Human Achievement™.

Pillar 2 is positive psychology coaching.

“It’s about leveraging your strengths to help you get from where you are to where you want to be.”

The final pillar is providing support around relationship intelligence and selfawareness.

Having the latter led him to move from restaurants and cafes to teaching hospitality management in Auckland.

“That’s where the interest in leadership and the psychology of leadership came from and, not wanting to be a one-trick pony, I was looking to move on from hospitality.”

When he began as a training facilitator for Foodstuffs North Island, he came across Blanchard Aotearoa New Zealand.

“I went from teaching the theory to seeing it happen in real time.”

That was transformational for Tim. “I realised I was good at it. If you are a good facilitator, it’s like people saying, ‘here’s my brain, SUMMER 2023

rewire me if you want to’. It’s an environment to make massive change for people.”

Through those years, the father of five gained a diploma in adult educational training, and a diploma in coaching, which he finished three years ago.

Experience has also been a great teacher.

“I have been in the trenches.”

In 2016, he and wife Sharon left Auckland to return to Hāwera and, after a stint working for Service IQ focused on hospitality and retail workplace qualifications, he embarked on his coaching career.

Tim covers the spectrum, from working with a single person to a whole team, facilitating groups and focusing on motivation strategies alongside a sole business owner right up to a national organisation.

“I don’t coach just business people – I coach people.”

Tim says he helps people find the reasons they are stuck, what change needs to happen and how to do it. “I work with people who want to review their comfort zone.”

He also taps into the core values of people and organisations, looking at how those principles inform behaviour and choices.

In his coaching kete, Tim has diagnostic tools to assess self-awareness and core strengths, including relationship awareness. Using the Core Strengths assessment, he asks people to rank 28 strengths so they can know themselves better. “Self-awareness brings choice.”

“He has been amazing for our team,” says Paul Scouller, General Manager of the WISE Charitable Trust.

Tim has looked deep into the Waitarabased not-for-profit organisation to find its needs.

“He’s not just a facilitator but fantastic at initiating other training to benefit our organisation,” says Paul.

When Tim is in his facilitator role “he makes everyone feel included”.

Paul has also had individual sessions with Tim. “I like to utilise him for selfbetterment for myself. To have a oneon-one with Tim is amazing. It’s a bit of reflection on my personal growth within my role.”

Kelly Judkins, company director at Hardings Funerals in Hāwera, says Tim’s coaching has been invaluable in many ways.

“First of all, it was to enhance our team by giving them the emotional intelligence to go forward and assist grieving families better,” she says.

“That’s been an absolute game changer for us where people get a better service from us because our team are much more adaptable, and they know how to read someone a little better.”

Tim’s latest work with Hardings Funerals has been to help them look at their values, strengths and moral ethos as a company.

“That’s to take our team from being good to providing excellence and that’s been another journey again,” says Kelly.

She has also worked one on one with him, particularly around facing changes.

Tim’s greatest tools are his ongoing use of positive psychology, posing questions, and listening. In large letters on his website, he asks: “You’re already good at what you do – but do you feel there’s a better way to get things done?”

YOUNG ENTERPRISE SCHEME

The Young Enterprise programme wrapped up for 2023 with our Regional Awards Night on 25 October. Dozens of prizes were awarded by our generous local sponsors.

We had five finalist teams pitching to judges in front of a live audience in hopes of becoming the regional champions.

The five teams were Ako Tamariki and Māramatanga from New Plymouth Girls’ High School, Forte from Francis Douglas Memorial College, Glass Glider from New Plymouth Boys’ High School and The Plank from Te Paepae O Aotea (Hāwera).

A huge congratulations to Forte for being named the 2023 Taranaki Regional Winner.

Building relationships, preparation and promotion are keys to success.

Strong relationships with current members have played a key part in finding job leads for candidates. Our local retailers had casual and permanent roles, and our hoteliers had part-time and fulltime jobs available and were willing to accommodate our candidates’ needs.

Our Work Ready Training sessions have been very successful. We have held three groups sessions and have seen our candidates walk away more confident than when they arrived. The group sessions

focused on planning, preparing, practicing and persevering the job seeker to find employment.

Promoting Chamber Hub through radio, social media, careers expo and wordof-mouth led to more referrals and employers with job leads. It highlighted the value of what we do as a provider, and the recognition from others acknowledges the existence and validity of our work.

Connecting is an integral component of our work and extends beyond our candidates to include support for our partners and community organisations at large. We connect employers through events like, Network of Trades and Industry Breakfasts. Occasionally, we introduce organisations who later collaborate on important projects.

The staff at Taranaki Orthodontics live for miles of smiles.

“The biggest thing for me is to see how happy people are at the end, and even at the start,” says orthodontist Betty Keng, best known as Dr Betty.

“That really is what brings smiles to our faces for sure.”

Nicole Collingwood, in charge of appointments and communications, says the staff all look forward to the finishing day, when braces or the aligner attachments are removed after successful treatment to provide straight teeth and bite realignment.

“The smile when they finish up melts our hearts. We love celebrating and making a big deal out of it – it can be a long journey.”

She recalls one instance, involving a young man they had all got to know well. “When he finished, you could not wipe the smile from his face,” says Nicole.

Dr Betty says she’s passionate about helping people. “Not only do I have the knowledge, I have the means to make it work the way we envisage it to work.”

The 43-year-old owns Taranaki Orthodontics with husband Kyle Beggs, who is the business manager of the clinic, which has a staff of six.

In 1997, at age 17, Betty moved from Taiwan to New Zealand to complete her high school education – and stayed. She has only been back to birth country once since then.

The couple met at the University of Otago in Dunedin – Betty was studying dentistry and Kyle was a research scientist. “I used to see her at lunch,” he says.

After finishing her Bachelor of Dental Surgery, she spent a year as a dental house surgeon in the southern city and then moved to the Manawatu/Whanganui region to work as a general dentist.

Orthodontics lured her back to Dunedin.

On her return to Otago, her relationship with Kyle deepened and she completed a three-year Clinical Doctorate in Orthodontics, graduating in 2009.

The following year, the couple moved to New Plymouth to open Taranaki Orthodontics, got married and Betty became pregnant.

“We made the rather bold decision to come here and start up from scratch.

It was a real challenge building up that reputation and the business,” he says.

But they did, and now have a highly successful clinic in fresh and fit-forpurpose premises on the northern end of Courtenay St. “Now I know how to run a business – I learnt on the job. If you have a good education, you can teach yourself anything if you want to.”

For small business owners starting out, he shares his top tips.

Number one is to gain trusted advisors, especially a human resources specialist, an accountant and a lawyer. “Find these people and listen to them,” Kyle says.

Businesses need to strive for top-class service, seek feedback and find a point of difference.

At Taranaki Orthodontics, their unique selling points are offering aligner treatment backed by a orthodontic specialist, and a full service team run by Dr Betty.

“She’s one of the top providers for aligner treatment in New Zealand,” says Kyle.

The mother of Douglas, 11, and Catherine, 9, has chosen to see patients three days a week, and spend the fourth as a regroup day. “I couldn’t do it without my husband’s support.”

Beyond the clinic, she’s a fully focused mum, and one with her own hobbies.

“I made the mistake of taking work home and not being present with my children.”

These days, she always lives in the now with her youngsters.

“I don’t want to be on my death bed saying I wasn’t present enough with my children.”

Beyond work, home and family, Dr Betty has taken painting classes and is also learning to speak French.

Last year, she took up skateboarding and can sometimes be seen tackling the bowl at Escape Coffee.

As an orthodontist she also pushes herself, learning about the latest techniques and technology, interacting with colleagues around the world and attending conferences.

That’s why she has learnt how to treat her patients by using clear aligners and attachments, as well as braces.

“Aligners are much kinder on teeth than braces,” says Kyle, sitting in one of three consultation rooms.

However, he says braces can still be a better option for kids that struggle with the routine of aligners.

Through a smart-phone app and a ‘scan box’ aid, those fitted with aligners and attachments, can now do their own home check-ups. A company called Dental Monitoring provides this service that lets patients know if they are ready to move into their next aligner tray.

This technology is great news for people living in places like South Taranaki, or beyond.

“The furthest afield we have had a patient is Thailand that’s been provided with treatment through us,” says Kyle.

In September the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce organised the third annual Wellbeing Conference for the Taranaki region. The conference continued the work and focus the Chamber has on the wellbeing of the people in our community.

Throughout 2023 we have witnessed severe weather events, increases in the cost of living, countries at war and the ongoing impacts of Covid-19 on our community. In light of this, the theme for this year’s Wellbeing Conference was focusing on what you can control and preparing for what you can’t. The conference enabled business owners and those working in HR and People & Culture to reassess and evaluate where they are as employers, employees and, importantly, as individuals. The purpose of the conference was to ensure attendees left feeling better equipped to assist one another as well as tools to implement for their own wellbeing.

her childhood experiences and the Christchurch earthquakes impacted significantly on her mental health. On moving to Waiheke, Billie founded the Hip Operation Crew. She used this story to illustrate how empowering people to identify their “gold” within can lead to better mental health outcomes.

The day started with Philly Powell, founder of Wellbeing Tick, presenting on Workplace Wellbeing and how to put wellbeing first and work second. Philly identified area attendees could control to support their wellbeing at work while suggesting strategies for areas they can’t control at work. In summarising, Philly asked attendees to identify one thing they were going to do to put their wellbeing first and work second.

The core focus area of Financial Wellbeing was presented by Luke Kemeys, a Chartered Accountant and founder of Keep the Change. Luke identified areas that are out of our control – for example high inflation, high interest rates, increased costs of living, financial concerns and staffing issues and then introduced strategies for attendees to consider in order to take some control over these areas.

Billie Jordan is the founder of the Hip Operation Crew, a hip-hop dance group consisting of 22 members aged 68-96 years old. Billie presented on Mental Wellbeing and spoke openly about how

brain-axis but her presentation was not about making people feel guilty for eating that piece of cake. Instead she informed attendees of what they could take control over by having a better understanding of what was going in their mouths and reinforced the link between nutrition and mental wellbeing.

The day concluded with a panel discussion involving Hayden Wano - Te Hiringa Mahara, Alana Ruakere – Tui Ora, Michael Carr – Sport Taranaki and Hayley Holt,

our MC. The panel provided a summary of what they were taking away from the conference and drew on their own experiences and knowledge to share their perspective on wellbeing in our community.

The conference was supported by an expo of local businesses doing their bit to support wellbeing in our community which was well received by all attendees.

Merry Christmas and a Happy 2024 As I am writing this in preparation for a Christmas edition, it seems too early to be thinking about Christmas and reflecting on the year that is gone and planning the year ahead.

One of the highlights for me this year has been the completion of two Team Leader Management Programmes – this is a relatively new programme for Implement and completing four cohorts is a milestone. Feedback has been positive, and I have enjoyed working with a variety of team leaders as they take on the challenges of working with teams.

In the words of one of the participants – “I can confidently say that it has been a transformative experience. The time spent on this programme has provided me with skills and insight for my role as team leader and contributed to my overall personal and professional growth.

The Team Leadership programme also provided value to my

organisation. The programme’s emphasis on collaboration, conflict resolution and team concepts and strategies have been invaluable in developing and achieving our team’s goals.”

Catalysing the future prosperity of Taranaki Te Puna Umanga Venture Taranaki has renewed its purpose, vision and mission with support for the business community continuing, unwaveringly.

“We have reviewed our strategy and we are really getting down to business to support our regional economy,” says Jennifer Patterson, Venture Taranaki General Manager Economic Development.

Its purpose is to be a catalyst for the future prosperity of Taranaki and the vision is to provide a thriving region for all.

The mission is: “Te Puna Umanga, he wai ora, he wai Herenga. Together, we inspire and nurture growth, connect communities, empower individuals, and ignite innovation to sustain and stabilise through lasting development, investment, and opportunity for our region.”

Like renewing marriage vows, Venture Taranaki (VT) now has a fresh focus that articulates its reason for being and aligns with regional aspirations; alongside that, it has strengthened its commitment to being a tangata Tiriti organisation, guided

by Te Tiriti practices.

“That means involving our Māori partners in what we do at every level, right from our strategy and our purpose to how we engage with Māori business on the ground. We want everyone to have the opportunity to thrive in our economy, so we need to ensure our doors are open to everybody,” Jennifer says.

“Māori have always been entrepreneurs and traders, so that history of commerce in this area goes back before European times.”

VT’s strategic focus is to elevate the region through its four focus areas of energy transition, food and fibre, hi-tech innovation, and destination development.

“We firmly believe these areas are where we can make the most impact for a prosperous and thriving Taranaki.”

Practically, VT offers support to businesses, big or small, new or established, innovators or exporters.

“We’re also continuing to provide on-theground business support, which is a lot of what my team does.”

One popular offering is the business mentoring programme led by Enterprise Support Adviser Kayleen Schoeman, who finds the right business mentor for the right person. “She calls herself the matchmaker.”

There are between 40 and 50 matches per year between business people and the volunteer mentors.

Another service is the popular start-up clinics, which are held mostly in New Plymouth but also in Hāwera.

Each of the free one-on-one 45-minute sessions cover a wide range of topics. These include learning how to create a business plan and budget, different company structures, taxation and whether someone’s business has a market.

From those clinics, about 20% of people go ahead and start businesses. But just as important are those people who learn their business idea isn’t viable, so don’t go ahead.

“That’s actually a success marker as well because, at that point, you’ve accessed a free service and haven’t lost any money testing out that concept. That’s one of the reasons it’s a really valuable service,” she says.

Another initiative is PowerUp, now in its fourth year, which aims to foster and nurture entrepreneurship. It is a support network for enterprise and entrepreneurship for new businesses and those wanting to grow or do things differently.

On offer is a series of programmes and services designed to help, including PowerUp Business Ready.

“That’s a 10-week programme that takes a cohort of very early-stage businesses and takes them through intensive workshops to a point where they are business ready – they are ready to trade.”

The Business Ready programme is free, however people must apply and be selected

to be part of it.

In addition, VT offers a series of podcasts where local trailblazers share their successful start-up stories.

At the next level, there are growth-phase programmes. The major one comes from the Regional Business Partner Network funding, VT delivers on behalf of the Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment.

That provides a pool of money available for capability building, including training and business coaching for owners and senior managers needing to upskill in a certain area.

They sit down with an adviser to do a Business Model Canvas assessment and are then helped to connect with a training provider. They must pay half of the cost of that study. “So, there’s some skin in the game for the businesses themselves,” says Jennifer.

The other side of this programme is research and development (R&D) support through Callaghan Innovation for innovative businesses looking to develop a novel product or service. VT has a team member dedicated to helping and connecting businesses to access a suite of funds and progammes to support R&D. For local businesses navigating the entrepreneurship journey, VT is much more than business support. They are a reliable resource for business owners seeking to share concerns about the pressures they face.

“We know that running a business on your own can be isolating, and sometimes it’s more comfortable talking to someone outside your immediate circle who understands the challenges of being a business owner.

“While there are limitations to the financial support we can provide, VT strives to create a supportive environment where you can openly discuss the highs and lows of entrepreneurship. Our team is equipped to provide practical advice, interventions, and connections that frequently prove invaluable for these business owners," concludes Jennifer.
