Program Notes Misa Criolla is a renowned 1964 Spanish-language mass composed by Argentine musician Ariel Ramírez, blending Catholic mass liturgy with South American folk music rhythms and instruments. Kyrie opens with the rhythms of the Andean vidala and baguala. Gloria is driven by a lively carnavalito dance rhythm. Credo features the Andean chacarera trunca. Sanctus employs the Bolivian Carnaval de Cochabamba. Agnus Dei concludes the mass in the style of the Argentine Pampa. Written shortly after the Second Vatican Council allowed the use of vernacular languages in the liturgy, it remains a masterpiece of sacred folk music. It was originally recorded with the folkloric group Los Fronterizos and has since been performed by legendary tenors like Plácido Domingo and José Carreras. Ethan Sperry’s arrangement of Desh attempts to reproduce traditional Indian sounds using only the human voice. Most Indian ensembles consist of one or two percussionists to provide the rhythm and one or two melodic instrumentalists (violin, ute, sitar, etc) or vocalists to provide the melody, which is superimposed over a shruti box that drones the root and fth of the scale for the duration of the piece. The drone is replicated through an “R” sound that sometimes produces harmonic overtones. A variety of nonsense syllables is used to mimic the sound of Indian percussion instruments. Dörven Dalai, composed by Yongrub, is an exuberant arrangement of an Eastern Inner Mongolian folk song that exhorts everyone from the Four Seas (the “four corners of the earth” or all nations) to ll their wine bowls with the best of wine, to rejoice and sing and enjoy this moment of happiness together. “As clear as the water of the West Sea, as pristine as the water of the East Sea, and as gentle as the fruit tree leaves, with happiness and good fortune we have met. Let’s drink the best wine, rejoice and sing!” Bob Chilcott is one of the world's premier composers and choral conductors in Britain today. His Furusato presents ve evocative arrangements of Japanese songs. Each poem depicts the beauty of the Japanese landscape and familiar melodies. Chilcott's original style and lush harmonies combine to create an enchanting fusion of East and West. Originally scored for piano and choir, Sarah Oeste has created and improvised the koto part.

Progam Notes (cont.) The Pretoria-based ethnic music expert Michael Barrett’s Umahlalela translates from isiZulu to "a person who does not work,” “an idler,” or “one who sits around doing nothing.” It comes from the verb -hlala (to sit or stay) and is used to describe someone who is unemployed, lazy, or stays home while others are working. The women taunt the men, “I will never again marry a man who sits home and does nothing. What will my children eat? What will become of me and my children? Hey! Hey you, you’re holding me back. I’m kicking you out.” Mbube was originally a Zulu song recorded by Solomon Linda and the Evening Birds in 1939. Originating in South Africa, the lyrics primarily chanted as “uyimbube” (you are a lion), re ect Linda’s childhood as a herder, acting as a watchful chant to keep predators away from cattle, though it has also been interpreted as a metaphor for Zulu strength. The folk movement in North America gave musicians the license to share music without proper context or quite possibly the information to give its creators credit. Mbube was later known as the “Wimoweh” song and became the pop hit “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” recorded by The Tokens. The iconic melody was not a part of the original song. It is reported that Solomon improvised this melody during the recording session. The arrangement in this program was recorded by The Soweto Gospel Choir. El Condor Pasa means the condor passes or the condor ies by. The condor is a very large bird which is commonly seen in the Andes region of South America. Peruvian composer, Daniel Alomía Robles, arranged the song in 1913 based on an Andean folk song. We invite you to sing a verse with us in English which was recorded by Simon and Garfunkel in 1970. The English lyrics credited to Simon. We invite you to sing with us: I’d rather be a sparrow than a snail Yes, I would If I could I surely would I’d rather be a hammer than a nail Yes, I would If I only could I surely would Away, I’d rather sail away Like a swan that's here and gone A man gets tied up to the ground He gives the world its saddest sound I’d rather be a forest than a street Yes, I would If I could I surely would I’d rather feel the earth beneath my feet Yes, I would If I only could I surely would fl

Program Notes (cont.) Sariri Paya is a classic of Andean music composed by Salomón Callejas and Nataniel González. The lyrics describe the sentiments and customs of the “Sariri,” a type of Andean traveler. “I have to get to the village. There my mother waits for me. Land of dark-skinned people and Aguayo-colored landscape. I am the Wanderer of the Andes walking many moons with the lament of the Indian climbing up the ravines. Please join in singing the chorus: Wai ya ya ya ya Wai ya ya. Tenor soloist David Myers, Jr., performs throughout New England and has been praised for his “beautifully polished tone” and “attractive tenor sound” (Portland Press Herald). David performs with professional ensembles including Aurora Camerata and Amethyst Chamber Ensemble. He made his North Star Baroque debut as the Narrator in J. S. Bach’s Coffee Cantata and sang the role of Ezekiel Cheever in Opera in the Pines’ production of Robert Ward’s The Crucible. David serves as the Music Director at North Yarmouth Congregational Church where he also maintains a private voice studio. He holds a Master’s degree in Vocal Pedagogy from the University of Southern Maine. Koto player Sarah Oeste is a professional classical musician based in midcoast Maine. She specializes in solo classical piano performance and teaching. Sarah has a strong love of Asian music because of her Asian heritage and has also worked as a professional Japanese Koto player with the Washington Toho Koto Society in Washington, D.C. She owns a private piano studio in Woolwich and has recently been called as the Music Director of Second Congregational Church in Newcastle.

Misa Criolla Text and Translations (cont.) Descendió a los in ernos.
I believe in one god, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And I believe in Jesus Christ His only Son, our Lord: Conceived by the power and grace Of the Holy Spirit, Born of the Holy Virgin Mary, Suffered under Pontius Pilate, Was cruci ed, died and was buried. He descended into Hell. On the third day He arose from the dead, And ascended into heaven. He is seated at the right hand of God The Father Almighty. From there he will come to judge The living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, The Holy Catholic Church, The communion of saints And the forgiveness of sins, The resurrection of the body And the life everlasting. Amen.
Sanctus Santo, santo, santo, Señor Dios del Universo. Llenos estan los cielos y la tierra de tu Gloria. Hosanna en las alturas! Bendito el que viene en el nombre del Señor. Hosanna en las alturas!
Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of the universe! Heaven and earth are full of Your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.
