Director
Beth Preston holds a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from Brigham Young University and a Master of Music in Vocal Pedagogy from University of Southern Maine. She directs the Newcastle-based Tapestry Singers, a community choir that has become known for championing the works of living composers. With Sean Fleming, she founded Classic Harmony, a group for singers aged 55+ that is under the non-profit umbrella of Tapestry Singers. She was a founding member of Vox Nova Chamber Choir in Brunswick (now Una Voce Chamber Choir).
Ms. Preston also teaches privately, coaching singers who win awards, scholarships, and acceptance into prestigious postsecondary programs. Ms. Preston has provided the vocal coaching for both amateurs and professionals in Heartwood Regional Theater Company’s musical theater productions. She was awarded “Distinguished Choral Director of the Year 2010” from Maine American Choral Directors Association, “Music Educator of the Year 2013” from District 3 Music Educators, and “Maine Music Educator of the Year 2019” from Maine Music Educators Association.
June 2019 marked Ms. Preston’s retirement from Lincoln Academy and a thirty-seven-year career in the public schools where she conducted award-winning choirs and directed musical theater productions of the highest caliber. She has recently enjoyed working with older students to help them rebuild their voices and rediscover the joy of singing.

Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.
Glory be to God in the highest. And in earth peace to men of good will. We praise Thee; we bless Thee; we worship Thee; we glorify Thee. We give thanks to Thee for Thy great glory. O Lord God, Heavenly King, God the Father Almighty. O Lord Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son. Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father. Thou that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. Thou that sittest at the right hand of the Father, have mercy upon us. For thou only art holy, thou only art the Lord, thou only art the most high, Jesus Christ. Together with the Holy Ghost in the glory of God the Father. Amen.
Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of Hosts. Heaven and earth are full of Thy glory. Hosanna in the highest.

Evening Prayer
Text by St. Augustine
Watch, O Lord, with those who wake, or watch or weep tonight, and give your angels charge over those who sleep. Tend your sick ones,
O Lord Jesus Christ; rest your weary ones; bless your dying ones; soothe your suffering ones; pity your afflicted ones; shield your joyous ones; and all for your love’s sake. Amen.

Director’s Notes
When you have a mix of singers and a pianist who are open to music other than classical, you look at what’s out there. It can’t be understated how hard some of this music is. It has challenged even the best of our musicians in the group. It has been good hard work.
I’m grateful for Sean Fleming whose jazz chops are just as prolific as his classical chops. We couldn’t have done it without him. I found two jazz masses that were likely anchors for the program. Linda Blanchard had a similar idea for Sheepscot Valley Chorus. Luckily we didn’t pick the same piece!
Will Todd’s Jazz Missa Brevis embraces a variety of jazz styles, the swinging jazz waltz Kyrie, an up-beat Latin-groove Gloria, a smooth jazz ballad Sanctus, the 7/8 Benedictus, and the soulful Agnus Dei.
The two Bach arrangements by Ward Swingle became popular in the 1960’s when the Swingle Singers brought a fresh, jazzy sound to Bach's compositions. Their debut album, Jazz Sebastien Bach, was a significant success, garnering critical acclaim and a Grammy Award.
Ola Gjeilo grew up with the sound of his father playing the saxophone. That was part of the inspiration for Evening Prayer. He said, “It was my first choral work incorporating instrumental improvisation.”
Our a cappella doo wop and other close-harmony charts are a challenge for even a professional choir. There is no autotune or reverb to help us out, just lots of repetitions and luck as we go live.
I’m so happy to be able to feature choir members Niall Lessard, Griffin Han-Lalime, and Violet Holbrook as soloists. It’s been exciting to welcome many of my former Lincoln Academy Lincolnaires to the choir!
We look forward to another great fall semester as we prepare for our very popular “’Tis the Season” concerts. I call them the Damariscotta Region’s answer to Portland’s Magic of Christmas. Please consider auditioning for Tapestry Singers. Check our website to request an audition.
