A word from the Pro
Hello Tapatio Members,
As a follow up to my email at the beginning of April, I wanted to update everyone on the changes in agronomic approach and progress being made on the golf course. For those of us who see the greens every single day, it’s hard to see how much growth has occurred recently. I take progress photos nearly every week and keep a log to track the progress I’m happy to share those photos with you if you want to stop by my office With the recent rainfall and the warmer temperatures, we ’ re finally getting some good growing weather and the greens are filling in We have also changed some of the fertilizer product being used, as well as the frequency with which they are applied. This is an aggressive, and expensive, approach to getting the greens out of winter dormancy. I had also mentioned soil, water, and ISTRC testing that had been scheduled. All samples have been submitted for analysis, some results have been returned and are being analyzed, and other results are pending. These tests will not only provide answers to immediate conditions and needs, but will also provide us with the information needed to understand the scope of greens renovation that will be required when that time comes With the warmer temperatures finally here, you will notice the poa annua on the greens starting to disappear It is a cool season “weed”, and will go away with some heat Along with the changes in fertilizer mentioned earlier, we are trying some new product this year to prevent the poa from encroaching next year The poa had evolved and built up a tolerance to the existing product, so we will be using a new product that has shown promise at other clubs. At some point recently, it appears that someone has taken it upon themselves to attack the poa on their own (see photo here). It would appear that these spots on the front of 14 green were sprayed with weed/grass killer, and it was NOT anyone on our staff. PLEASE DO NOT DO THIS! We are taking steps to eliminate the poa without damaging the Bermuda grass around it. You will notice that these spots will remain dead for weeks, which does not help anything. As always, we appreciate everyone ’ s patience during this transition time of year. With some help from Mother Nature, and the hard work of our Team, golf course conditions will continue to improve If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to call or email me
