Hello, Tapatio Members!

As we recover from our first Greens Aerification of the year, it's a prime moment to bring you up to speed on some important golf course updates. Firstly, let's address the greens on Holes 5 and 14, which, once again, are coming out of dormancy much slower compared to the others. This persistent issue, observed throughout my four years as Director of Golf, stems from underlying challenges beneath the surface. Despite our efforts in recent years, including tree removal and surface drain installations, the desired results have yet to be reached. To remedy this, we're implementing more aggressive maintenance practices this year, including bi-weekly "solid-tine aerifications" on Holes 5 and 14 throughout the summer. This method aims to enhance oxygen, water, and nutrient flow to foster stronger green growth. Rest assured, these smaller aeration holes will swiftly recover, minimally impacting the ball's roll.

Additionally, you may have noticed the presence of "poa annua" in our greens, characterized by its bright green color. This common annual weed is increasingly resistant to traditional herbicides, making it a challenge for golf courses nationwide. The herbicides typically used to kill the weed are becoming more and more ineffective as the weed builds a tolerance to it. Some of our greens have “strips” of this poa. If the herbicide is overlapped too much, it will kill all the grass and not just the poa. There have been golf courses that have completely lost their greens because of this. As the temperatures get hotter, the poa will start dying off.
