which I still practice daily. She knew my limits and patiently taught me the basics in a comfortable setting. I’m not the ‘yoga’ type.

I never would have gone to a class, but she has the right perspective, personality, knowledge and understanding to help anyone learn and use the benefits of yoga.”

Costanza has been teaching yoga in Taos for more than 20 years. Her public and private classes currently revolve around her personally designed Ashtanga Vinyasa and Four Seasons Yoga practices — the latter, which she said, incorporates “deep, fluid breathing and movement combined with precise alignment to balance the activities, climate and predominant dosha of each season, inspired by Ashtanga and Iyengar yoga, and Ayurveda.” (A dosha is one of three bodily humors that make up one’s constitution, according to Ayurveda.)

Also key to Constanza’s practice is her specialization in back care and scoliosis yoga therapeutics.

Back care includes yoga for

people with herniated discs, sciatica and other spine-related issues.

“Yoga for scoliosis is to help people manage the pain associated with the scoliosis,” Costanza said, adding that the yoga is directed at preventing current bone curvatures from getting worse.

Costanza started practicing yoga at age 17 with her first teacher, José Santos in Taos, who encouraged her to start teaching in her mid-20s, when she started taking over his classes. From there, she became interested in Ashtanga and went to India twice to study with Ashtanga yoga founder Pattabhi Jois.

In her 30s, she studied and became certified by Elise B. Miller, renowned Senior Certified Iyengar Yoga teacher who specializes in back and sports-related injuries.

“Back-care yoga aims at creating space where there would otherwise be compression and strengthens supporting structures to release overworked areas,” Costanza explained.

Teresa Ebie is a 59-year-old Taoseña who suffers from idiopathic scoliosis and a herniated cervical disk. She has been practicing with Costanza for two years, in group and private lessons.

“Sonya has helped me to not only work within my limitations, but also, where possible, to grow beyond them without fear,” Ebie said, adding that Costanza brings to her teaching “a keen understanding of anatomy and physiology, as well as deep insights into meditation and spirituality. Practicing with Sonya has helped me to become physically stronger, emotionally calmer and more focused.”

Done with the right spirit, it seems, human bodies crave yoga for overall well-being.

Costanza teaches four group classes a week at Shree Yoga, located at 112 Ledoux St., and two groups per week at her Taos Yoga Studio, 218 Morada Lane. She does private sessions by appointment.

Outreach (NFO) Military Family Respite Center at 428 Theodora Lane in Taos — next to CFT Décor and Gifts (formerly Country Furnishings of Taos) — opened its doors offering free massage, acupuncture, and meditation and yoga classes to vets and their families.

“This service cuts out the VA — the middleman,” said Peters, NFO executive director, adding that the idea for the center had been in the works for 2 1/2 years. A private donation helped speed up the center’s grand opening.

“Through the unbelievable donation from Libby Johnson of her parent’s law office building, which Howard and Helen Emily Brandenburg built in 1961, this donation allowed a back-burner program of NFO’s five-year plan to move ahead of schedule,” said Peters.

The center accepts walk-ins and appointments Monday through Friday. The general public is also welcome. There is a charge (determined by each practitioner) to non-veterans, but that money benefits the vets and their families by offsetting the costs.

Three treatment rooms are available at the center at a discounted rate allowing for massage, acupuncture, cranial sacral therapy and myofascial therapy providers to give treatments to paying customers, and to vets and their families for free. In addition, there is yoga space and a designated area for mindfulness and relaxation/meditation training. Each practitioner will offer a minimum of one free treatment to military families once a month.

And each family member is entitled to three, one-hour sessions at no cost. The sessions may be used whenever they choose and for any services offered. Additional sessions are available at a subsidized rate.

An added benefit is the Dept. of Veteran’s Affairs Mobile Vet Center, which utilizes the new center’s high visibility location to provide group post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) counseling and veteran’s benefit resources once a month.

The primary goal of the Mobile Vet Center is to assist veterans in making the difficult transition between military and civilian life.

“We’re trying to find that balance where everybody’s winning,” Peters said.

THE PRACTITIONERS Many veterans express interest in becoming complementary and alternative medicine providers, according to Peters. Because of that,

he said many of the practitioners at the Military Family Respite Center will indeed be former military and family members.

“This will provide both augmented care to military families and economic development opportunities to military families in the wellness field,” said Peters.

MASSAGE THERAPY Local, licensed massage therapist Sheila Shortell previously volunteered at NFO’s Valverde Commons building in Taos. She has seen over and over again how complimentary, alternative treatments such as massage therapy can help someone physically and mentally.

“They walk up to me looking downtrodden, aching,” Shortell described. “By the time I was done, they were walking away with a lighter step and better skin color.

When you loosen up the muscles’ grip on the bones, you stand taller and you sit up taller. Massage benefits circulation, posture and your attitude. If you’re hurting, your attitude is better after a massage.”

ACUPUNCTURE Acupuncture is a centuriesold form of traditional Chinese medicine. It’s based on the theory that energy, called chi (pronounced “chee”), flows through and around your body along pathways called meridians. Acupuncturists believe that illness occurs when something blocks or unbalances your chi.

Acupuncture is a way to unblock or influence chi and help it flow back into balance. This treatment has been effectively used for the relief of back pain, headache, migraine and even sports injuries. Moreover, acupuncture provides more than pain relief. It is said to be helpful in treating anxiety, insomnia, digestive problems, menstrual problems, weight control and infertility to name a few.

Free acupuncture services to vets and their families are offered on the second Friday of each month by volunteer Dr. Dominic Villanueva from Albuquerque who specializes in pain management.

Researchers of traumatic stress report that yoga is helpful in bringing about improved mental balance.

Yoga has also been shown to reduce stress, depression, anxiety and alcoholism.

A 2014 study published in the Journal of Traumatic Stress provides scientific support for the benefits of yoga’s breathing techniques on PTSD patients in a controlled and randomized long-term study, which monitored the effects of yoga over a year’s time.

Through NFO’s partnership with Connected Warrior, Sally Boyd teaches free yoga classes at the center every Tuesday at 10 a.m.

MEDITATION At its most basic, meditation is a mental exercise that helps a person achieve deep relaxation of mind and body. It involves deep breathing and purposeful physical relaxation, one body part at a time. Its benefits range from simple and obvious to subtle and less known. Its goals are increased energy and overall improved health, especially when it comes to the mind.

Studies have shown that regular meditation reduces PTSD symptoms. A 2014 Stanford Report indicates that breathing techniques used in meditation also lessen anxiety and respiration.

Each Wednesday at 3 p.m., the center offers classes in “Trance Missions: Relaxation and Pain Management Techniques.” This class — led

by Samuel Burke-Favero, a medical assistant at Mogul Medical, a certified hypnotherapist and wilderness EMT — explores hypnosis, neurolinguistic programming, guided imagery, conscious auto-suggestion, breath work, progressive relaxation techniques, moving meditation and visual trance induction techniques (Girih Geometric tiles, Kolam design and labyrinths).

To make them into habits, start with just two of these practices five days a week for three weeks. Then add two more for another three weeks and continue adding two every three weeks until you are practicing all the ones you feel are right for you. Use sticky notes as reminders.

nside one of the small alcoved rooms at the far end of Cabot Plaza in Taos, Kathy SutherlandBrauw, founder of Inside Out Recovery, and peer support worker Bob Johnson open their doors each week to anyone seeking treatment for addiction.

On a Tuesday, clients started to file in around noon for a free acupuncture session, some taking up seats at the corners of the room to wait in quiet meditation while others join in conversation at the large table at its center – where, for many, the most important form of therapy begins.

One client describes the new school where her son has just started the first grade. Another mentions closing on a new apartment, where he and his girlfriend intend to move at the end of the month.

And as local acupuncturist Selah Chamberlain makes his way around the room, carefully inserting needles into clients’ ears, arms, legs and back, another jokes that the tiny metallic protrusions make them all look like aliens.

The conversation wends its way through many subjects, though addiction rarely enters into it.

While one-on-one peer support is at the foundation of Inside Out’s services, for many, activities like acupuncture, yoga and pottery offer hourlong reprieves each week from the realities of addiction.

Some come seeking treatment for alcoholism, while others wrestle with substances like methamphetamine, heroin and other opioids – though all are able to relate, even if without words, through a common struggle.

PEER TO PEER

Speaking on the condition of anonymity under the alias “Vanessa,” one client, 35, says she began abusing opioids when she sprained

her ankle five years ago. Like many others, her addiction started with a prescription.

“I started off with the little pills of Vicodin,” she said. “Then it escalated from there. After I broke my wrist, I went up to the stronger ones – Oxy 10s, Oxy 20s.”

The rise of opioid addiction in the U.S. has been widely documented and was recently classified as a nationwide “epidemic” by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which estimates that approximately 21 million Americans suffer from opioid addiction.

It follows, then, that opioid overdose has become a leading cause of death in the U.S., killing approximately 33,000 people annually.

New Mexico continues to oscillate between the top one and top two spots for states with the highest number of drug poisoning deaths each year – around 27.3 deaths per 100,000 people.

Taos County and neighboring areas in Northern New Mexico record the highest rates in the state, at around 67.7 deaths per 100,000 people, more than double the national average.

Though prescribed opioids are a common starting point for addiction, heroin – an illicit opioid derivative that offers a similar euphoria – is often where one is sustained.

After her doctor lost her license for overprescribing to patients, Vanessa turned to smoking heroin in order to cope.

But as her highs grew shorter and her down periods grew longer, she found herself becoming extremely ill – feeling nauseous and vomiting, experiencing extreme migraines and body aches – something she later recognized as withdrawal, otherwise known as “kicking” among addicts.

Supporting two young children on her own, Vanessa decided to drop the habit entirely and on her own, a notoriously difficult way to

“I was getting tired of being sick all the time and just constantly forking over the money for it,” she said. “It was just getting awful. I couldn’t be there for my kids.”

Vanessa described a nightmarish withdrawal in which she remained bedridden for weeks, but at the end of it, she had kicked her addiction.

Shortly thereafter, Vanessa encountered Sutherland-Brauw, whom she had met as a young girl growing up in Chama.

As a former addict herself, Sutherland-Brauw could recognize the signs and told Vanessa about a program that she had started in 2008 in Española – one focused on peer-to-peer counseling and services. A Taos branch had opened in 2014. Vanessa reluctantly agreed and started attending group therapies and yoga a few times per week.

“Ever since then, I’ve been coming here,” Vanessa said. “The acupuncture helps me with cravings, and I’m still doing the group meetings for women and yoga, too.

Like Sutherland-Brauw, freedom from addiction has inspired Vanessa to pursue her own certification as a peer support worker. She plans to join the team at Inside Out in the near future.

“I want to help other people,” she said. “There aren’t too many programs available for people to come and get help – especially for younger people. I’d say to anyone who’s struggling to come and check this place out. It really changed things for me.”

C

rossFit is a unique combination of collaboration and competition. But it is mostly about starting wherever you are and challenging yourself to do better and grow stronger.

Although the workouts are the same for each person attending the class that day, everyone also customizes the exercises so that they are appropriate to their own level of fitness. The results are achieved through constant varying of the workouts and performing the exercises at a relatively high intensity.

CrossFit Freeworld of Taos opened last fall under the ownership of Emily MurphyDarling and Ben Nichols. They purchased the business from Darling’s sister and moved the gym into a new space at the same complex in El Prado. A s part of the move, they added and upgraded equipment so they could accommodate more participants, although the space is smaller. Nichols leads most of the classes.

GET SERIOUS

By getting serious, I mean make it a goal that you want to lose weight.

Be clear about how much you want to lose and also identify the reasons why you want to lose weight. The clearer you are about your goals and underlying reasons, the easier it will be to stick to your plan.

SET SPECIFIC PARAMETERS

Some examples may be: “I want to lose 20 pounds so I can fit into my wedding dress by September,” or “I want to be able to run a 10k in less than 1 hour next spring,” or “I want to be able to find the energy to work out three times a week.”

Whatever your goal, make it as tangible and specific as possible.

Your goal may relate to your health: “I want to get off my blood pressure medication by summer.” “Losing weight will help me regain my energy and exercising will help me get to my goal,” or “I want to be able to sleep eight hours every night so I can function optimally during the day and lose those extra pounds.”

In fact, losing weight may just be your strategy toward improving your health.

tem in Albuquerque, a weight-loss surgeon renowned for creating the “ultimate gastric sleeve” and helping thousands of bariatric surgery patients make successful transitions from morbid obesity to a normalweight life.

Originally based in Houston, it was because of Hurricane Katrina that this former Vietnamese refugee uprooted his practice to New Mexico and into Martinez-Hernández’s life. To qualify for surgery, she had to get her Body Mass Index (BMI) below 60, so she began exercising, which meant struggling to get out of bed, carrying hand weights and walking back and forth from her bedroom to her living room, around and around.

This was a major change, given that she had resorted to fast food drive-up windows six days a week, because she couldn’t bear the looks people gave her as she pushed her nearly 500-pound mass backwards down grocery store aisles — she was too heavy to pull herself forward in her walker.

In the year it took to lose 100 pounds pre-operatively, she went to Vuong’s weekly nutritional and weight-loss support groups in Albuquerque. Her starting BMI of 69.44 is now 29.69.

Maybe Martinez-Hernández’s work history explains some of her success, where other family members have not yet succeeded. She has been a counselor at Río Grande Treatment Center in Embudo, and also worked with Community Corrections and Community Against Violence in Taos. She also sees Taos therapist Dr. Rebecca Muller, and can’t imagine how survivors of obesity could go it alone.

“I believe my eating disorder

has manifested out of emotional abuse,” she said. “Meaning, food was love. Food was comfort. Eating became my life. Food was a constant companion. Now I’ve learned how to deal with social situations.

Cooking now consists of baking, grilling, steaming. I stay away from fried foods as much as possible.”

Slowly but surely, with the assistance of her 31-year-old highfunctioning autistic son, Lawrence Martinez, she went from not being able to walk 20 steps from the car to the Taos Community Auditorium’s park bench, to being able to walk around that park. She now works out for an hour or two daily — when possible — at High Altitude Fitness gym and spa, just up the road from her house.

“I started eating veggies and fruits. Then I started food logs to become aware of what was going in. And all through this process I would see Dr. Vigil once a month.”

In November 2013, she had her first bariatric surgery consult in Santa Fe and transferred to Dr. Vuong. On July 21, 2015, she had her two-finger-by-two-finger gastric sleeve operation. As she was being wheeled to the operating room for the sleeve surgery, she remembered she prayed, “God let me die if this isn’t going to work, because I don’t want to do this anymore. Or, let me live and be fruitful.”

She feels she would not have been able to hang on if it wasn’t for her son, who is also morbidly obese and who needs her. “I was his role model. And now he’s learning the basics of healthy food choices.

I have to show him what’s healthy and unhealthy. I pay him money for calories he burns on the treadmill at the spa.”

Perhaps the darkest chapter in her story is the fact that she “died” after becoming septic post-op from a hip-to-hip panniculectomy, not the tummy-tuck mommies get to look better in a bikini. “I got sepsis and flat-lined, I coded in ICU.” She said her new bridegroom of four months, Felipé, never left her side through it all. She remembers how his wedding band shined as he changed her bandages once she was discharged home. He calls her twice a day just to see how she is feeling — explaining the phone call that interrupted our interview.

“I used to wake up every morning and wish I was dead,” she confessed.” Now I ask how I can be of service. God has given me so much, how can I not give of myself more?”

Martinez-Hernández also emphasizes that surgery is just a tool, it doesn’t fix the “fat person,” only the individual involved can make that life change. “We need to get real and honest” about what is going on.

“Never, ever give up on yourself,” she implored forcefully, eyes piercing and intensely bright. “Even when you’re at your darkest, don’t you ever give up. Because miracles happen every day. But you have to work for them.”
