Following in her great grandfather Bert Phillips’s footsteps,
Margo Beutler-Gins, director of Taos Historic Museums, invites Taos and the rest of the world to celebrate 100 years since the Ernest L. Blumenschein family of artists bought their historic home and studios at 222 Ledoux Street in August of 1919, further establishing and promoting Western art in Taos.

The museum commemorates the lives and art of all three artists – Ernest L. Blumenschein, Mary Shepherd Greene Blumenschein and their daughter Helen Greene Blumenschein.
trip from Denver to Mexico. Blumenschein traversed over 20 miles to a Taos blacksmith, reputedly located off Ledoux Street, opposite the Blumenschein Home & Museum of today.
“Ernest went back and forth for almost two decades, but my great grandfather never left,” Beutler-Gins said.
By 1915, E. L. Blumenschein and Phillips founded the Taos Society of Artists, with fellow artists Oscar Berninghaus, E. Irving Couse, W. Herbert “Buck” Dunton and Joseph H. Sharp, all with the intent to support and promote these artists of Taos. By 1919, the Blumenschein family moved into four units of the Ledoux Street complex that over the years expanded into a large home, studios and garden.
Her family history agrees with near-legendary accounts of how enchanting Blumenschein and Phillips found Taos to be, upon inadvertently discovering it on their famous broken wagon wheel mishap in 1898, on a sketching

‘August is the month we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the purchase of the Blumenschein home,’ Beutler-Gins said, noting they will be doing multiple celebrations on the porch of the home in August, many in connection with the Taos County Historical Society and the Taos Arts Council. “The 100th anniversary kickoff will be the weekend of Aug. 3, starting at 2 p.m.,” Beutler-Gins said. “We’re trying to focus on the daughter, Helen’s contributions to Taos. She was not only an artist, but also a philanthropist and a founding member of the Taos County Historical Society.” Titled, “Helen Blumenschein: Archeologist and
Historical Advocate,” Beutler-Gins said the anniversary kickoff will include a tented event in the museum courtyard and feature Jeff Boyer, “the son of generational Taoseño, Jack Boyer. Jeff Boyer was originally the director and supervisor of the Archeology Department of the State of New Mexico.”

Also in August, Beutler-Gins said details are being finalized for an outdoor art market with local vendors, from Taos Pueblo, local Hispanic and Taos artists, as well as an art show featuring the Blumenschein family’s photography and art. In the Blumenschein Studio there will be an unknown, emerging “local master,” Buetler-Gins said, an artist who she believes has supreme talent but is undiscovered and unrepresented in Taos. REATED IN THE ‘80S The Birth Project is a collection of works on paper, lithograph and serigraph prints as well as needlework representing and honoring the elements of the birthing process. fourth decade the concept of birth is everlasting. “It is interesting to me that the work seems as relevant today as it was over 30 years ago when I first created it,” said Chicago in a press release.

hicago worked with more than 150 needleworkers around the country to create the project.
“Those women [needleworkers]— most of them don’t consider themselves artists, they’re doing women’s work, embroidery and crocheting, that kind of thing,” said Janet Webb, long time friend of Chicago, an advisor and member of the collections committee at the Harwood Museum. “I think it was a really empowering experience to them to see their work displayed in art museums,” she said. The exhibition will include more than 20 works that will further discuss the mythological representations in relation to women and creation.

“The real center piece of this show is the piece called Birth,” said Webb. The piece was executed by Dolly Kaminski, it is more than 7 feet tall and 18 feet wide. The piece was created with a black, laced crochet style. “It’s [Birth] hung 6 inches off the wall so the shadow, casts on the wall when the light passes through it, becomes part of the piece,” said Webb. The exhibition will be completely created with pieces from Chicago’s collection and works from purely New Mexican collections including the Harwood’s collection, the University of New Mexico’s Art Museum collection, the Albuquerque Museum’s collections and even works from a private collector in Santa Fe. A curator from the Albuquerque Museum as well as Webb and J. Matthew Thomas helped to organize and curate the feminine display. The Harwood will also be including a timeline of Chicago’s life and works in the exhibition. She is most known for her permanent piece within the Brooklyn Museum, The Dinner Party, an installation that features 39 place settings within a triangle (symbology of femininity) formed table. Each place setting represents a woman in history, both mythological and historical. Other projects include Power Play, The Holocaust Project and her feminist organization Through the Flower. has received many awards including a Lifetime Achievement Award and the Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts from Santa Fe. In 2018 Time magazine labelled her one of the “100 Most Influential People.” The exhibition as mentioned, is as relevant today as it was 30 years ago, after all birth is how we all arrive in this world according to Chicago. She is a resident of Belen, New Mexico and recently there was opposition to a museum proposed by the mayor that would honor her work within the town. Her work was considered too controversial due to representations of genitalia and the town discarded the plans. Taos is eager to welcome Chicago’s work and does not so easily deter from women’s sexual organs. “It [The Birth Project] resonates with this strong current of celebrating strong women in our community that we have been doing for many years,” said Thomas. “Empowering women is a big part of it, most of her life has been about education for women, empowering women to be artists and getting women in the arts more present in museums,” said Webb. “Birth is the timeless subject matter,” Webb said. The work of Judy Chicago, The Birth Project will be exhibited June 2 through November 10 at the Harwood Museum. 57

says life itself constantly changes how she creates her art, but probably the most “hugely impactful event” was moving to Taos from New Jersey in 1990. “I was trained to paint the Hudson River School style – more realistic, and on the dark and moody side. Upon moving to Taos, my paintings got much brighter, more colorful, and looser … I’ve always loved painting outdoors, but in Taos I learned to paint outside in a very energetic, efficient and fast way, so I could pack up and get to the school in time to pick up my two daughters.”

is a multiple-award-winning Taos landscape painter who left his home state of Maryland a few years after graduating art school and headed for Austin, Texas. There he became staff illustrator for Texas Park and Wildlife Department for several years. Moving to Taos in 1994 was the major influence on his artistic process. “In Northern New Mexico I was inspired to fully develop my plein aire painting, and my subject matter transformed through the influence of the high desert landscape. My preferred subjects are the mountain valleys of New Mexico, their plant life and the adobe structures of those who live there.” “I have become clearly convinced that, most importantly, I must always be a student of painting. I want to build on the knowledge I’ve acquired and continue to grow and improve my skills so I can make better paintings. I’m a work in progress.” Morel often shows at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City, at the Albuquerque Museum and at Tulsa’s Gilcrease Museum. He is featured in numerous fine art publications, including Southwest Art, American Art Collector and International Artist. After nearly 40 years making students’ pottery dreams come true, in 2003,
Enchanted Circle Pottery owner-artists JoAnne and Kevin DeKeuster moved to Taos, built their own house and a wood-fired kiln – which JoAnne DeKeuster, a hand-building ceramist, says was a total game-changer for their artistic process.
“In our wood-firing in Flagstaff and Eastern Arizona College we always had big groups for firing, but that was always to perfect students’ work. It’s exhausting if you do it right. Moving to Taos was the first time we could just focus all our time and energy on our own art.” A wheel-throwing clay artist, Kevin DeKeuster says their whole process is to keep their work unique. “This process is so involved and always growing – the wood ash changes the work.
