I

t’s no secret that art, festivals and Taos are synonymous — a bonded trio that feeds off each other, keeping history alive, traditions intact and unparalleled creativity strong.

Fall in Taos, when nature bursts the final time before settling down for a winter’s sleep. Like the art, the air is fresh and cool.

Local artists of many disciplines and genres who are participating in the Taos Artist Organization Studio Tour on Sept. 3-5 have been putting the finishing touches on their inspired creations, readying them for the many exploring eyes to come through their usually off-limits studios. As is the tradition, there are similar studio tours this season stretching from Dixon to Río Costilla.

The Taos Fall Arts Festival kicks off with the outdoor art installation eye spectacle that is The PASEO and ends with the unique gourd-art fundraiser for three nonprofit organizations, Calabash Bash. Celebrating its 42nd year, aficionados from all over the art collecting world are drawn to our tiny town with big talent to drink in the Taos Select and Taos Open shows.

Artisans bring handcrafted woolens to town, along with their sheep and alpacas for the annual Taos Wool Festival (Oct. 1-2). From guitarists to cellists, musicians put in final practices before letting bluegrass sounds to chamber arrangements hit the clouds.

Food, hot air balloons, storytelling, living history events, art exhibits and craft fairs happening around the Enchanted Circle fill out the full Taos Fall Festivals calendar.

SAN GERONIMO DAY

SACRED OBSERVANCE, HALLOWED HARVEST

F

east days are an important aspect of Pueblo culture that date back thousands of years. These special gatherings are about family, food and traditional dances. They are also a time when tribal members congregate in a renewal of their language, religion and culture.

Pueblo’s church of the same name.

In the 1500s, the Spanish entered territory that later became New Mexico.

They brought with them their Roman Catholic religion. Missionaries embarked for this foreign land to bring their faith to the Native American peoples living here, and converted many. However, Native beliefs and customs survived and some became interlaced with Catholicism.

Today, feast days such as San Geronimo Day at Taos Pueblo are as much an observance of ancient Native American traditions, heritage and abundance as they are commemorations of Catholic saints, such as Saint Jerome, patron saint of the 10

Saint Jerome was a Scripture scholar, having translated most of the Old Testament from the Hebrew. He is recognized as the patron saint of translators, librarians and encyclopedists.

The feast day in his name at Taos Pueblo centers around the harvest.

The Tiwa people at Taos Pueblo do something extra special during San Geronimo Feast Day — they invite the public to witness their celebration on Sept.

30.

Public attendees will witness the traditional dances, the sacred clowns (whose true meaning is only known to the Red

Willow people of Taos Pueblo) and pole climbing; the flavors of green chiles and scents of piñon; and a footrace at sunrise.

There is also an open market featuring arts and crafts.

Each dance narrates a different story and serves a different purpose. Dances are considered prayers, not a performance, and as such, outsiders are privileged to observe them.

Some of the events are invitation only.

The Pueblo is a home, not a museum, and each dwelling a shrine; please be mindful of unmarked doors as they are not shops open to the public. One must be invited into a home to visit and/or share a meal.

It can’t be stressed enough that no recording devices of any kind are allowed.

This is about respect. It’s about being culturally sensitive. Photos and videos are deemed invasive and potentially exploitive.

The people of Taos Pueblo would rather visitors take the feeling of the celebration

home with them, rather than pictures.

Taos Pueblo requests that visitors abide by the following rules on San Geronimo Day: No cell phones, cameras or recording devices.

Please respect the “restricted area” signs as they protect the privacy of residents and the sites of the Pueblo’s Native religious practices.

Do not enter doors that are not clearly marked as curio shops. Each home is privately owned and occupied by a family and is not a museum display to be inspected with curiosity.

Do not enter the walls surrounding the ruins of the old church or Taos Pueblo cemetery.

Do not wade in the river, It is the Pueblo’s source of drinking water.

Leave pets at home.

OLD TAOS TRADE FAIR GOING BACK IN TIME

his fall marks the 30th year of the Old Taos Trade Fair at Hacienda de los Martinez (Martinez Hacienda), giving visitors a looking glass into the rugged frontier life of the 1800s.

During the weekend of Sept. 24 and 25, this celebration of the annual harvest highlights the people, the tools, the food, the music and the crafts of three cultures — Hispanic, Native and Anglo — that lived and gathered at the historic hacienda.

In recent years, the fair had become a little less about authenticity. After Taos Historic Museums Board President Margo Gins (granddaughter of Taos Society of Artists founding member Bert Phillips) returned to Taos and attended the 2015 Old Taos Trade Fair, she had a plan.

“I walked up and it looked like a carnival midway last year,” she said. “I want to bring the three cultures together 14

With that in mind, Gins, the board and volunteers are set to present an Old Taos Trade Fair that intends to honor the people of the valley in a special presentation to the families who were instrumental in the dayto-day life of the hacienda and give visitors a living-history experience complete with a blacksmith, weaver, quilters, carvers and experts in colcha (embroidery). And we can’t forget about the popular mountain men.

The hacienda was built in 1804. It is set up today to represent 1820. Mountain men came to the hacienda starting in 1840, mostly to trade beaver pelts, as explained by Mary Ann Boughton, Trade Fair Committee chairperson.

“It was a welcoming place,” Boughton said. “Mountain men could pitch their tents around the outside. People who lived there and slept inside the walls slept all over the place on bear skin rugs. There were no designated bedrooms.”

The showing of a film is another first for the hacienda. “And Now Miguel” (1966), the true coming-of-age story about Taoseño Miguel Vigil, who, as a young boy, wanted to accompany his father on his annual summer journey into the Sangre de Cristo Mountains to graze the family’s sheep — a rite of passage for each of the Vigil boys — but was too young. The film was adapted from the 1953 award-winning novel by Joseph Krumgold.

Final numbers weren’t known when this publication went to press, but Boughton expects “way more mountain men” this year than the 10 who participated last year. And with mountain men come good stories — some true and some folklore.

Other entertainment includes musicologist and Spanish colonial music scholar Cipriano Vigil, from El Rito, who, along with his son, will perform folk songs; local Spanish music group Darren Cordova y Calor; and contra dancers.

Another change this year is no vendors will be allowed outside the hacienda.

Inside, there will be what Gins described as a “Spanish-Indian market” featuring works by local people of Hispanic or Native

The festival is an outstanding regional wool market featuring juried vendors displaying their wool fiber, yarns and artistic creations.

There are contests for hand-spun yarn, fleeces (wool and alpaca), and finished garments and home accessories.

Have we any wool? Why, yes, sir. The Northern New Mexico region holds a longstanding history and tradition with raising and utilizing wool and other animal fibers. The popular part-festival, part-arts and crafts fair known as the Taos Wool Festival returns for its 33rd year this fall from Oct 1 to Oct. 2 at Kit Carson Park.

The event also commemorates Red River’s 1895 founding in a unique way with a “steampunk” theme — a mix of science fiction, the industrial revolution, romance, history and fantasy — featuring the Steampunk Fashion Show and a Tea Duel.

he studio tour — the mainstay, a large draw during Taos Fall Arts Festivals. There’s something personal and informing, almost romantic, about watching an artist create in the heart of his or her creative space. From the High Road to Abiquiú, there is no shortage of studios to tour or art to behold.

TAO STUDIO TOUR SEPT. 3-5 Now in its ninth year, the Taos Artist Organization (TAO) kick-starts the annual

fall arts revelry with the Taos Studio Tour featuring 36 emerging and established artists. Visual creators working in a variety of mediums open their studios around town from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day and encourage the public to enjoy the activities planned for Labor Day weekend.

Fifteen painters are participating in the tour, including Bob Cooley, Carol De Marinis, Patience Heyl, Mary Beth Hill, Inger Jirby, Live Johnson, Ron Larimore, Anna Magruder, J. Mehaffey, Tom Noble, Janet Price, Linda Rauch, Linda Rodriguez, Maureen Tibbs and Krysteen Waszak. Six tour artists work in clay: Marvel Bartlett, Diane Cole, Mari Hawkes, Dennis Luftig, Sylvia Luftig and Ty Minton; and five in glass: Jane Dunlap, Roy Dunlap, Ellen Goodrich, Peggy Griffey and Scott Messick.

The tour also includes sculptor Peter Chinni, photographer Jeremy Landau, printmaker Jan Dorris, jeweler Chris Vinella, fiber artist Laura Quilligan, and mixed-media artists Danielle Kennedy and Caren Lorber.

Serigraphs, photography and etchings are featured at 555 Taos, plus glass, jewelry, encaustic and more at Taos Studio Works.

TAO and the Sagebrush Inn are sponsoring an exhibit of tour artists’ work at the Sagebrush Inn from Aug. 1-Sept. 30.

This is a good place to see examples of the artists’ work and start the tour. Over the Labor Day weekend, a TAO representative will be at the Sagebrush gallery to answer tour-related questions. A reception for the tour artists will be held at the Sagebrush Inn on Sept. 1.

the artists of the region. Along the area known as the “High Road,” traditional and contemporary arts play a major role in preserving a long-cherished rural way of living as well as a livelihood.

Originally, the High Road Art Tour was funded by an economic development project of the federal government through La Jicarita Enterprise Community. Since its inception in 1998, the High Road Art Tour has occurred each year and has grown considerably in size and scope.

The High Road is a back-country, scenic route between Santa Fe and Taos leading visitors through high desert, mountains, forests, small farms and tiny Spanish land grant villages. (The “low road” runs through the valleys along the Río Grande.) Scattered along the way are the galleries and studios of artists and traditional artisans inspired by the beauty of their surroundings.

This year, the “Farm Connection” is introduced by hosting two farmers markets on each Sunday of the tour; one at Gaucho Blue in Peñasco and one at High Road Marketplace in Truchas. Meanwhile, Tooley’s Trees and Zia QueenBee farms will be open to the public. Organizers hope this addition to the studio tour will expand in the coming years. Blair Brown is a new artist joining the tour this year. She specializes in cartography and mixed media. Other participating artists include Isabro Ortega, who does carvings and retablos and is a local artist from the Llano area. Kathy Riggs — of Ojo Sarco Pottery — has been on the tour for all 19 years. highroadnewmexico.com

EL RITO STUDIO TOUR OCT. 1-2 10 A.M.-5 P.M. Hidden in plain sight is a small community embraced by the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains where residents have lived quietly for generations cultivating lives that foster independence and creativity. Fifty miles north of Santa Fe,

just 12 miles off U.S. Highway 84, El Rito is brimming with talent in both traditional and contemporary media, including weaving, welding, tin- and ironwork, retablos, sculpture, pottery, paintings, drawings, printmaking, photography and collage, jewelry, handmade books and note cards, furniture and carvings and musical instruments.

Seventeen stops, including one on the New Mexico Fiber Arts Trail and one on the New Mexico Potter’s Trail, will display the work of more than 40 artisans in the

setting in which it was created. There will be a mercado at the community center this year, featuring the art and crafts of artists from nearby communities. Visitors to this 30th annual tour will be delighted by the variety of art, from local village arts to contemporary artwork. Artists celebrating on this anniversary year have been part of the tour since the beginning and are still showing and living in El Rito: Barbara Campbell, Emmy Cheney, Viki Edwards, Nicholas Herrera, Jane Kramer, Kathleen and Terry Vanderbrook and Julie Wagner.

The El Rito Library will host its

scrumptious “Death by Chocolate” fundraiser. The El Rito Quilters Guild will be selling quilts, pillows, art dolls and draw string bags. Local musicians will be entertaining at the library and at the studios.

Be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes to enjoy a stroll in the crisp fall weather and work up anappetite. In the village, El Farolito will be cooking their famous chile, enchiladas, burritos, tamales, rellenos and Frito pies.

SABOR, A TASTE OF TAOS OCT. 9 • NOON TO 4 P.M. Todo de Taos will undoubtably converge on Historic Taos Plaza again this fall for a streetfair showcase of 20-some Taos restaurants, area wineries and breweries because who doesn’t want to try red chile fudge, pesto chevre croissants and Diamond Dogs?

On the heels of last year’s successful inaugural event, this year’s Sabor at the Historic Taos Plaza will feature about 25 restaurants offering tastes of main dishes, desserts and drinks.

The hottest dish last year, said Taos County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Susan Cady, that “people happily stood in line for” was a mac and cheese waffle with lobster. The gumbo sold out in 1 1/2 hours and sliders were very popular with the crowd. Cady also said locally brewed beer will be featured, as will a “New Mexico winery or two.”

Sabor has quickly become a big community party, and it isn’t just because of the many delicious bites and sips. It’s a family affair with free activities for the kids.

“Sabor is a wonderful, happy, organized and easy-to-attend event,” Cady said.

Live music will be provided this year by the popular New Mexico party band Felix y Los Gatos with a blend of South and Southwest music, such as zydeco, Americana, the blues, funk, rancheras cumbias, country, Tex-Mex and swing.

To make transactions easier, people buy tokens and use them to purchase tastings throughout the venue. There’s no need to worry about change or credit cards.

Tokens are $3 each or $20 for seven. Dogs are welcome. Bring your appetite and dancing shoes.

GREAT CHEFS OF TAOS PAELLA COOKOFF SEPT. 18 • 4 P.M. As the story goes, paella as we know it originated in Valencia, Spain. Three widely known types of paella are: Valencian paella, seafood paella and mixed paella.

Rice is the basic ingredient.

But then there are chefs who put their own spin on this wonderful dish. And that’s why we are interested in what the Great Chefs of Taos — alongside the 15 to 20 students in the Culinary Arts programs at Taos High School and UNM-Taos — will create in the seventh annual Paella Cookoff on the patio at Sabroso Restaurant and Bar in Arroyo Seco.

Why paella?

“There are so many different kinds,” said Taos High instructor and UNM Culinary Arts Program chairman Benjie Apodaca. “It just seemed like a good dish and it’s fairly versatile — cooked in one pan.”

Tickets are $40, and proceeds support the schools’ Culinary Arts programs.

The funds that go to the Taos High program enable students who qualify to travel to the National Skills USA competition and the ProStart Program. And for the paella contest, two students are paired with a local experienced chef from participating restaurants — another learning experience. And for patrons, they have the enviable task of sampling the specially prepared dishes.

Doors open 4 p.m. as the cooking begins. Tapas will be served by the Taos High students and Spanish wines will be offered; the bar will be open. The People’s Choice and Judge’s Choice judging and serving of the paella will start at about 5 p.m. Tickets are available in advance at Sabroso and Black Mesa Tasting Room in Taos and at the door.

The 16th Glam Trash show gets underway Saturday, Sept. 17 from 4-6 p.m. The free event begins with a noncompetitive children’s show at 4 p.m., because “there are so many kids that want to be a part of it,” said Sara Basehart, coorganizer and owner of Seconds Eco Store.

Adult trashionistas — likely about 30 of them — will then take to the runway. And for the second year, cash prizes up to $250 — sponsored by Art for the Heart — will be awarded for all ages. Other sponsors include the town of Taos, Seconds Eco Store, Art from the Heart and The Taos News.

Started 16 years ago by educator Nicole Kowalski and Jean Nichols of Art for the Heart, the Glam Trash Fashion Show is one of the iconic art events of Taos. The show’s purpose has always been to demonstrate that there is value in reused materials. It’s become a community event — a once-ayear glimpse into the creativity found at the junction of recycling and art.

“This year is one shazam of a year,” Basehart said.

Bigger plans are already in the works for years to come. Basehart said the town of Taos is encouraging Glam Trash to become a festival in conjunction with the Taos Arts and Crafts Fair, including a children’s recycled crafting area with Twirl, and a recycled fine arts aspect that organizers hope will be part of Melissa Larson’s Arte de Descartes show that she puts on annually through her nonprofit, Wholly Rags.

“So, we are working on getting ourselves truly organized, maybe for the first time,” Basehart added. “Every year, the show takes hundreds of hours to organize, and it is an unpaid volunteer job done out of a passion for trashion.”

very year on the last full weekend in October, a spectacle of brightly colored hot air balloons lift off the ground and effortlessly float over the orange, amber and yellow leaves of fall just as the sun rises, casting a new-day glow onto Taos Mountain.

The Taos Mountain Balloon Rally Association, the nonprofit group that organizes and puts on the event each year, is a small, dedicated group of volunteers who work nearly year-round to make

The Taos Mountain Balloon Rally is truly a Taos community event. This year marks the 34th Annual Taos Mountain Balloon Rally. Smaller than many such events, the Taos Mountain Balloon Rally typically hosts 35-50 balloons and crew each year. The rally, primarily because it is smaller and more intimate, has become a popular stop for balloonists, families and crews. The event is very popular

with Taoseños, as well. Parents and kids alike get “up close and personal” with the balloonists on Friday and Saturday morning as the crews prepare for launch during mass ascension at 8:15. eoRio — a confluence of art and environments — is an annual outdoor, contemporary art event organized by Land, Experience and Art of Place (LEAP) in collaboration with the BLM Taos Field Office and other partners. It is a venue to explore the Río Grande del Norte National Monument through new artworks highlighting local, natural world themes.

Created as a platform for innovative artists, NeoRio provides opportunities for cross-pollination between artists, scholars in other fields, conservationists, and members of the public and local communities interested in protecting and celebrating wild lands and waters.

Multiple artists will be featured this year including works by artists Lee Lee (Taos/ Denver), Viviane Le Courtois (Denver) and Jenny Lynn McNutt (Brooklyn, New York), each taking a unique approach to this year’s theme of pollination. Their works will transform selected locations at Montoso Campground into site-specific installations and outdoor exhibition spaces

to be discovered and investigated by visitors.

Lee Lee’s project is multifaceted and invites participation, exploring local plants, pollinators and seeds. “Movement,” Lee Lee says, “is the focus of this project.”

She describes the beliefs and inspirations behind her work for this event as “adrift, migration, home.”

Adrift, she says, refers to “Chemical drift from improper use of pesticides and herbicides and is a severe threat to pollinators.” She visualizes migration through hummingbirds. “The vast migration of hummingbirds will be represented by a large-scale painting of a hummingbird nesting in a lush Central American rainforest,” Lee says. “The marked difference of landscape when installed in the high desert plateau will emphasize the distance between ecologies across which they move. Engaging another incredible migration, regionally specific milkweed seeds cast into paper formed

as milkweed pods will be installed and distributed to support the Monarchs.” Her concept of “home,” she explains, is “The movement of other pollinators like bees, flies, beetles and moths is highly localized.

Broadening perceptions of ‘home’ to include outdoor spaces beyond our walls will help cultivate an understanding of the interrelationships between humans and pollinators.”

McNutt describes her multimedia project as “something of a cabinet of curiosities” and is “about the honeybee and our intricate relationship with them.”

All are invited to Montoso Campground at Wild Rivers to examine these exciting works on Sept. 17 from 4-9:30 p.m.

Further, information will be provided for developing pollinator habitat specific to the Southern Rocky Mountain Steppe.

Distribution of native plant seeds for participants to take home will provide food for different pollinators throughout the growing season, and initiate an extended collaboration between participants in NeoRio.

Another nod to pollination and pollinators will happen in the evening with the NeoRio Feast. Guests will be treated to an inspired community feast, featuring local cooks and local ingredients. After dinner, take in featured artists’ solarpowered, illustrated talks, which will give a behind-the-scenes look at the onsite artworks and a visual tour of their past works.

Le Courtois is creating sculptures for pollinators and people, while McNutt (a former Harwood Museum artist in residence) is sharing her extensive visual project on honey bees, titled “Precise

Muse of the Southwest (SOMOS) has created an annual event that provides just this kind of outlet and entertainment.

The 17th annual two-day spoken word event features engaging stories woven and delivered by nationally acclaimed tellers, a story slam, story swap, workshops and children’s stories staged at the Taos Community Auditorium and other venues around downtown Taos.

This year’s theme is “Humor.” Featured storytellers include New York-based storyteller and humanitarian Laura Simms,

SMU-in-Taos present the eighth annual Taos Fall Lecture Series. This year the topic over four lectures is “Transformative Events and Processes in New Mexico’s Colonial History.”

On Sept. 8,“Archaeology of the 1860 Pueblo Revolt” is presented by archaeologists Matthew Liebmann (Harvard University) and Michael Wilcox (Stanford University). Recent archaeological research casts new light on the aftermath and changes wrought by the transformative 1680 Pueblo Revolt.

Taos’ treasured storyteller Cisco Guevara and myth-maker, movement artist and storyteller Elaine Muray. Ten of Taos’ finest tellers will compete in a StorySLAM with the theme of “Participation.”

The popular event concludes with the Big Stage Show featuring the headliners, plus three StorySLAM poets, competing to determine the Taos StorySLAM Grand Champion held at the Taos Community Auditorium.

“Frontera! Revolt and Rebellion on the Río Grande,” will be discussed on Sept. 22 with filmmaker Juan Jota Leaños (UC Santa Cruz), anthropologist Aimee Villarreal (Our Lady of the Lakes University) and Lee Moquino (Santa Clara Pueblo). An animated film about the revolt will also be screened.

Archaeologist Lindsay Montgomery (University of Arizona) and folklorist Enrique Lamadrid (University of New Mexico) will speak Oct. 6 on “Comanches and Genízaros in Taos” and their historical and cultural impacts.

The final lecture in the series is “The Colonial Indo-Hispano Landscape” on Oct. 20. Achaeologist Jun Sunseri (UC Berkeley) and community collaborators Dr. Charlie Carillo, Isabel Trujillo and Virgil Trujillo will discuss the colonial Indo-Hispano landscape of Abiquiú.

TAOS FALL ARTS FESTIVAL 42 YEARS OF SHOWCASING TAOS COUNTY

I

t’s the granddaddy — the arts event that started it all. Taos has inspired artists for more than a century and risen to prominence as a world-class art destination. Each autumn, both locals and visitors gather in anticipation of the Taos Fall Arts Festival (TFAF), an opportunity to experience and celebrate all that the artists of Taos have to offer.

TFAF (Sept. 23-Oct. 2) is a showcase of juried and open art shows featuring more than 250 artists ranging from contemporary to traditional to folk art.

Workshops, dance and music performances as a well as Youth Art programs are also part of the annual festival.

Visionary Artist and Life-Time Achievement awards will be presented at the opening reception Sept. 23, 4-6 p.m. at the Guadalupe Parish Gym on Don Fernando Street. The Taos Fall Arts Festival Committee announced the 2016 winners of the prestigious Peter and Madeleine Martin Foundation for the Creative Arts “Visionary Artist” awards.

They are ceramic artist Brandi Jessup and metal sculptor Christina Sporrong. The Charles R. Strong Distinguished Lifetime Achievement Award recipient for 2016 is painter Alyce Frank.

The Taos Select is a cornerstone of TFAF. The juried portion of the festival, the Taos Select, employs outside jurors to pick artworks for display for the duration of the festival. Taos Select showcases work from Taos County artists in all media.

This year’s show will feature a Best of Show and People’s Choice awards. The opening reception will be held Sept. 23, 5-10 p.m., also at the Guadalupe Parish Gym. The ever-popular Taos Open has always been an exciting show, not only for the artist, but for visitors as well. The show includes 2-D art, sculpture, jewelry and wearable art. Visitors often spend most of their time perusing the Taos Open looking for the unexpected. Some artists prefer not to have their art juried for a variety of reasons, and the Taos Open is an opportunity for them to showcase their art. This year’s opening reception will also be held Sept. 23, 5-10 p.m., at Coronado Hall on Civic Plaza Drive. Taos Select and Taos Open exhibitions will be joined by an expansive lineup of performance pieces, live arts, film, music and a calendar of incomparable special events.

For the second year, the Taos Environmental Film Festival (Sept. 29Oct. 1) incorporates film honoring the land, environment and people of New Mexico, the country and the world, with performances and lectures to expand knowledge and engagement with environmental activism and topics.

On Sept. 28, there will be a panel discussion on the intersection of ecology and the history of land management in Taos, such as acequias, Native American traditions and on the role of writers, artists and filmmakers in saving our natural environment.

This year, the film festival will span three days. Admission is free, but donations are gladly accepted for the following Taos educational and conservation groups: Taos Land Trust, Taos Pueblo Day School, Amigos Bravos and Taos Fall Arts.

Films to be screened include “Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret,” a groundbreaking feature-length environmental documentary film produced

by Leonardo Di Caprio, follows intrepid filmmaker Kip Andersen as he uncovers the most destructive industry facing the planet today – and investigates why the world’s leading environmental organizations are too afraid to talk about it. “Racing Extinction”: Oscar winner Louie Psihoyos assembles a team of artists and activists to show the world never-before-seen images that expose issues around endangered

species and mass extinction. “How to Let Go of the World and Love All the Things Climate Can’t Change”: Oscar-nominated director Josh Fox (“GasLand”) continues in his deeply personal style, investigating climate change – the greatest threat our world has ever known. Traveling to 12 countries on six continents, the film acknowledges that it may be too late to stop some of the worst consequences and asks, “What is it that climate change can’t destroy?” “We Know Not What We Do” is a tough, but tender creative medley that presents both the voice of love and the voice of reason, as it sets out to examine the most important challenge of our time: man’s relationship to his environment.

Also at the Oct. 1 matinee, a specially choreographed dance by Amber Vasquez will be performed with her Taos Youth Ballet. This will be a multimedia event with the screening of the “Taos Glam Trash Fashion Show,” directed by Jon Vigil, projected behind the dancers. This will be followed by the short “Heaven’s Falling,” directed by Kimberly Williams. The feature “We Know Not What We Do” will have the director, Elizabeth Gaylynn Baker, in attendance and she will accept her Environmental Activism in Film Award. Ali McGraw will also receive an Environmental Activism in Film Award, and Baker will accept the honor on McGraw’s behalf. A Q&A session will follow the screening and the producer, Aaron Daniel Taylor, will also be present to discuss the film.

Two Worlds” and “A Thousand Voices” will be shown Saturday, Oct. 1, 7-9 p.m.

Namingha (Hopi-Tewa) is the recipient of the 2016 MIAC Living Treasure Award.

His art process allows him to share sacred aspects of his culture in familiar forms with the public, while still protecting the sanctity of Hopi and Tewa cultures.

“A Thousand Voices” won the American Indian Film Festival best documentary and the grand prize at the New Mexico Women in Film Fiesta. The film’s title comes from the proverb, “It takes a thousand voices to tell a single story.” This documentary builds from thousands of voices to present one universal story of New Mexico’s Native American women. Thus film includes the talented Taos Pueblo fashion designer, Patricia Michaels. A Q&A will follow the screening.

The film festival welcomes artist and performance poet Ron Stock, who will perform his environmental poetry.

TFAF concludes with Calabash Bash on Oct. 2, a silent and live auction of hand-painted gourds to benefit three local nonprofits (see more on page 40). See the calendar starting on page 48 for more related events.

n Dec. 2015, it was elbow to elbow at the Taos Country Club during the inaugural Calabash Bash gourd-art fundraiser.

Up for auction were California-grown gourds given to local artists on which they explored the strange, new canvas culminating in exquisite transformations depicting a crane, a hippo and masks. A tattoo artist beautifully scribed scripture onto his gourd. Pueblo fashion designer Patricia Michaels dressed her hollowed out fruit in fabric adding LED lights. Another gourd was motorized — it rotated on its base.

The event raised $32,000 in three hours for Stray Hearts Animal Shelter and the Taos Men’s Shelter. This year’s event will be held Oct. 2 — the closing day of Taos Fall Arts — from 4-7 p.m. at the Sagebrush

Based on the number of cars parked all the way to the highway last December, organizers felt they needed a larger venue. The goal this year is to triple the amount of money raised. They expect 500 to 600 people to attend this year at the second annual event, which includes silent and live auctions, food and live “background” music.

The Calabash Bash is a resurrection of an annual nonprofit fundraiser started by former Taos artist JD Challenger called “Out of Your Gourd.” When Challenger left Taos several years ago, the event ceased.

Last year, Stray Hearts Animal Shelter Board President Pam Miller and Taos Men’s Shelter Board Treasurer Jeff Trammel (co-owner of Walking Rain Productions and the event’s presenting sponsor) shared in a conversation that their respective nonprofits needed a new fundraiser. “Out of Your Gourd” came up. After getting in touch with former organizers, one last call was made to Challenger. He had trademarked “Out of Your Gourd,” but gave them the okay to put on the event with a different name. Taos artist Meredith Garcia came up with “Calabash Bash,” taken from la calabaza meaning gourd in Spanish.

Organizers then reached out to the Taos Arts Council and President Paul Figureoa, hoping to be included in the popular yearly event. They got a thumbs

up — Calabash Bash could be held Oct. 2, putting an exclamation point on the final day of Fall Arts festivities.

This year, under a theme of homelessness, H.E.A.R.T. of Taos has been added as a benefactor. H.E.A.R.T. of Taos helps women transition out of homelessness and provides a pet- and family-friendly shelter.

“Not only are federal and state monies very difficult to secure anymore,” said Ama White Owl Khan, H.E.A.R.T. of Taos co-founder/executive director at H.E.A.R.T. of Taos, “we have chosen not to pursue federal or state funding because we feel strongly that local community is the solution.”

“Our community strengthens when we care for our vulnerable — women, men and animals,” White Owl Khan added. “Taos, in particular, is a uniquely creative and generous community.

None of the benefitting nonprofits are presently receiving state or federal funding.

“Fifty-three percent of our revenue comes from events and donors,” said former Stray Hearts Executive Director Harvey Yokum. “Our yearly finances curve up and down all year. Events like this help level those ups and downs.”

Many people may be under the impression that the animal shelter’s recent PetSmart grants fill that void, but Yokum explained those grants (like

BA S H most grants) are specificuse only and cannot be earmarked for daily operations.

The Taos Men’s Shelter was quick to jump on board as Hearts and Stars is its only other yearly fundraiser. And because the shelter’s executive director, Roger Martinez, is also an artist, it was a “no-brainer” for him to accept the inclusion and gave him “an extra vested interest.”

As of

late July, 54 artists have confirmed the invitation — an invitation that when first approached, many responded with silence or a “What?” Miller said. Arroyo Seco-based photographer Geraint Smith, Miller shared, is one artist who accepted the challenge and is attempting to figure out how to get a photo on a gourd. Some artists prefer to donate a piece of original artwork. The group has expanded the artist search this year to include gourd art societies.

The maximum number of gourds to be up for auction at the event stands at 75.

Organizers expect to near that number and just might hit it.

• Dosshaus’ (Zoey Taylor and David Connelly of Taos, and Santa Monica, California) “Phone Booth” is a sculpted out of cardboard, full-scale retro phone booth inviting viewers to directly engage.

Ushering in Fall Arts over Sept. 23 and 24, unbound artists bring their projections, installations and innovative marvels, which take over entire streets and green spaces from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. each day. The Paseo is a hands-on, interactive event for all the senses. It needs to be seen to be believed. Words rarely do justice.

• “RGB VGA, VOLT, HD” is a do-ityourself audio/video synthesizer created by Chicago artist/teacher James Connolly that hybridizes analog and digital systems to combine the control and precision of digital programming,

At the time this publication went to press, coordinators were in the process of confirming a number of community members that will be partnering with the artists. Local partners that will be presenting include the Harwood Art Museum with Ethan Jackson, Act I Gallery with Ollie Bell, ARTAOS, Twirl and a number of local galleries with special featured exhibitions.

Case in point is the AR in Taos’ ARTAOS, which stands for “Augmented Reality,” the same technology that Pokémon GO is based on. The ARTAOS “MAG” will be parked at Heads Up Music in Yucca Plaza with a largescale, interactive AR demonstration for all attendees.

“We are testing this cutting-edge technology for future, large-scale outdoor art installations around Taos,” said ARTAOS creator Jason Rodriguez.

“We want to express how we have created a number of local collaborations with our visiting artists,” said The Paseo co-director Matt Thomas. “It’s been incredible linking our artists with local organizations, businesses and schools. We feel this really helps express what

• “Attic Windows” by designer, engineer, artist and educator Leah Beuchley (Peñasco, Albuquerque) is a collaboratively constructed quilt of light. Her work explores intersections and juxtapositions — of “high” and “low” technologies, new and ancient materials and masculine and feminine making traditions.

• J. Gill, A Herruzo and J. Sanchez bring to Taos “Captured Atmosphere,” a kinetic, interactive light environment.

• “Radio Confessional” by Santa Fean Parker Jennings is a stand-alone structure equipped with low-range broadcast capabilities allowing participants to let their voices, songs, poems, stories and noises be heard.

• Joerg Staeger’s (Germany/Arroyo Hondo)“ok.v005_becoming” is an audiovisual outdoor installation using two channels moving images and four channels of audio.

• “The Illuminator” is a political art collective based in NYC that utilizes guerrilla projections in urban landscape as their primary strategy for intervention. The project emerged out of the Occupy Wall Street movement,

Michael Hearne’s Big Barn Dance Music Festival is an annual tradition for music lovers and dancers not only in New Mexico, but across the Southwestern United States. With a long history of one-of-a-kind performances and magical moments both on the stage and the dance floor, this year’s event will be no exception. The 14th annual Big Barn Dance Music Festival will take place at Kit Carson Park in downtown Taos.

The Big Barn Dance started out as informal Saturday night neighborhood two-steppin’ parties near Taos. Every couple of weeks all summer long during the 1990s, an authentic mountain country barn dance took off under the stars at Casa de Caballos Ranch in Des Montes, up the road from Taos. Hearne’s band, South X Southwest, showed up with various friends and musical colleagues to pick, play and dance ‘til the wee hours. Folks just kept coming, and the summer barn dances became a beloved tradition that music lovers and two-steppers looked forward to year after year.

Hearne has maintained a friendship over the years with some of the finest songwriters and bands in the world. True to form, The Big Barn Dance provides a showcase for musical brilliance, allowing audiences an up-close and personal experience with songwriters as they spin tales revealing the creative process and the story behind the song.

RED RIVER BLUEGRASS FESTIVAL SEPT. 15-18

Head to the Red River Community House for this exciting, free event featuring bluegrass and Americana musicians from all over the region including Colorado’s Finnders & Youngberg, who proudly swim in the deep currents of classic bluegrass, tried-and-true honky-tonk, country swing and skillfully spun folk tales; Augusta Road from East Texas; the three-piece contemporary bluegrass and gospel group Bitter Creek Band, which was the first band to play at the festival; The Blue Canyon Boys, winners of the 2008 Telluride Bluegrass festival band contest; ATC Stringband, a student group from the Academy for Technology & Classics, a public charter school in Santa Fe. SHORTGRASS MUSIC FESTIVAL SEPT. 16-18

The grasslands of northeast New Mexico, on the eastern face of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, stretch east as far as the eye can see. Part of the largest biological community in the entire North American continent, this high-altitude portion of it is composed of the short grasses — tough little plants, like blue grama and buffalo grass that can withstand the perennial drought cycle of the region.

The Shortgrass Music Festival is a celebration of the open range and limitless sky and invites music lovers to enjoy the immense natural beauty of the area along with a feast of live music from some of the very best concert artists in the world. Last year’s June concert at Rayado was such a success that the festival will repeat it this year, adding one more evening of music to the high-plains summer.

Festival artists will perform in venues that are themselves a tour of the short-grass country. The deer and the antelope really do play here, along with elk, bear and Mr. Turner’s bison, and visitors will see them as they retrace the old Santa Fe Trail between Colfax, Cimarrón and Rayado.

The Northern New Mexico town of Cimarrón hosts the 12th annual celebration featuring The Magnolia Sisters, a band of women who play the whole gamut of musical styles from southwest Louisiana; Halden Wofford & the Hi-Beams, rootsy and real, neither revivalist nor retro, the Hi-Beams’ brand of country music is as boundless and electrifying as America itself; the Highway 38 Houndogs cross the pass from Red River with an irresistible home brew of dance music they call “Southwest Americana with a green chili twist”; and a recital featuring world-renowned cellist Denise Djokic and pianist Heng-Jin Park, who has played with the Boston Pops. TAOS CHAMBER MUSIC GROUP SEPT. 17-18, OCT. 29-30

Recognized for creative programming and first-class artistry, the Taos Chamber Music Group’s (TCMG) 24th concert series of “wild and scenic” music runs from September 2016 through May 2017. Programs include a signature mix of chamber music masterpieces, more contemporary works and multidisciplinary collaborations performed at the Harwood Museum of Art, where TCMG is the resident chamber music group.

During Taos Fall Festivals, TCMG presents “Credo,” a multimedia presentation of music and culture from

the East and West on opening weekend Sept. 17-18, 5:30 p.m.

In addition to favorites by Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert and Brahms, highlights include Tibetan-influenced music on opening weekend, and a powerful program,“Parting the Veil,” featuring violinist Laurie Carney, is scheduled for Oct. 29-30, 5:30 p.m. at the Harwood Museum.

RED RIVER FOLK FESTIVAL SEPT. 22-24

This “of the folk, by the folk, for the folk” festival debuted in 2015 in conjunction with Aspencade. The lineup includes well-known Americana, country, bluegrass and folk musicians Max Gomez, Cruz Contreras, Elizabeth Cook, Thom Bresh, Sam Baker, Al Schackman, Tommy Elskes, Mike Addington, Kelley Mickwee, Colin Brooks and Ollie O’Shea performing in a beautiful alpine setting where the autumn gold of the aspens will just be hitting its peak. The action is expected to take place in Brandenburg Park, the Lost Love Saloon and the Motherlode Saloon, although it may expand to other venues. The Lost Love Saloon serves as the casual smaller Main Street venue, where music will start daily at 5 p.m. Inside the saloon, you will see an array of performers casually swapping songs and trading guitars with other festival artists who happen to be walking by. This little tavern often produces some of the most magical performances around.

Right next door is The Motherlode. A great American honky-tonk of the first order, it was built in the mid-1930s as a saloon, dance hall and gambling establishment. Well, two out of three ain’t bad, and even though gambling ended in the early 1950s, the saloon and dance hall are still going strong.

This classic venue will be home to the evening headline performances. Shawn Mullins, The Secret Sisters and James McMurtry all performed here.

Composer and virtuoso Albeniz was a leader of the Spanish nationalist school of musicians. His fame rests chiefly on his piano pieces, which utilize the melodic styles, rhythms and harmonies of Spanish folk music. Granados, pianist and composer, was a leader of the movement toward nationalism in late 19th-century Spanish music.

His interest in the 18th century is reflected in his tonadillas, songs written “in the ancient style.” Granados wrote extensively and fluently for the piano in a somewhat diffuse, Romantic style.

Turina’s compositions for piano, violin and orchestras are often credited with helping to promote the national character of 20th century Spanish music. Brazilian composer Villa-Lobos is one of the foremost Latin American composers of the 20th-century, whose music combines indigenous melodic and rhythmic elements with Western classical music.

FRANK MORGAN TAOS JAZZ FEST NOV. 16-19

In honor of Frank Morgan, the great alto sax man who made Taos his home, Taos Jazz Bebop Society presents the 2016 Frank Morgan Taos Jazz Festival.

This year will see the return of Morgan’s protégé, alto saxophonist and singer Grace Kelly, who has blossomed into a major jazz star in her own right. Kelly will appear with her quartet on the last night of the festival on Nov. 19 at Taos Mesa Brewing Company.

Other acts include a free kickoff on Nov. 16 at The Taos Inn with the Reggie Austin/Lorca Hart Trio and the Bob Dorough Quartet with guitarist Al Schackman will play Nov. 18 at the Harwood Museum. A screening of the film “What Happened Miss Simone,” will be shown Nov. 7 at the Taos Community Auditorium.

Morgan’s legendary jazz status was a bit under the radar for many years.

His journey to Taos was a bit more tumultuous and long fought. To hear Morgan play, you had to take the warden’s tour of San Quentin and listen to the prison band. This band was known in some circles as “the world’s greatest jazz band that never recorded.”

Morgan made it to Taos for the last five years of his life, after 30 years in and out of prison. He loved it here, felt like he was left alone to just be himself. taosjazz.org
