LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Dear readers, Well, it’s been one heck of a school year, but here we are: the finish line. From remote learning, to vaccine clinics, to community activism, this has been a year… with a class… like no other. Students across the Enchanted Circle banned together and announced, “NO!” “No! We will not let COVID take our senior tear from us.” “No! We will not let COVID take our community from us.” “No! We will not let COVID make us less than we know we can be!” The determination, the grit, and the optimism shown by the students in our schools was a shining beacon for all of us during this time. Being physically together was in short supply in 2020-21, but togetherness was not, at least not for our community. That’s because Taosenos like the senior classes at Taos High School, Vista Grande High School, Moreno Valley High School, Taos Academy Charter School, Penasco High

School, and Questa High School all tackled the challenges of the year without missing a beat. There were students handing out community meals, students assisting a testing clinics, students marching for justice, and students laughing and hugging as the dream of an in-person graduation became a reality. Despite the grief and heartbreak of the last year, I have hope. And that is because I have seen what these young adults can do when faced with adversity. What they can accomplish when challenged. What they can bring to a community despite trying circumstances. No other class (with the exception of the Class of 2020) has had to overcome the societal challenges that this one has. And I know that the future is in good hands with the Class of 2021.

TAOS HIGH SCHOOL Brilliant minds, strong backs, full hearts

T

he tiger: proud, intelligent, regal. Asia’s largest cat, she stalks her prey silently through the brush. She lives alone, a single hunter on the prowl, but she thrives as part of a pride. This large and splendid feline also happens to be the perfect mascot for Taos High School. For THS, the year got off to a challenging start. Like all public schools in New Mexico, remote learning was the name of the game. Homecoming, prom, graduation? The future looked so uncertain in the fall of 2020. The Tigers weren’t able to take the sports field until 6

the spring. The THS students weren’t able to join their classmates in school until April. Things were tough this year, to say the least.

Scholarship semifinalist Britney Hsu, who was also a semifinalist for the Coca-Cola Scholarship and the recipient of a LANL scholarship.

But like the tiger in the wild, the Tigers of THS persevered. Though forced to be alone—to hunt for knowledge as individuals behind computer screens learning through Zoom—they still formed bonds that will last a lifetime. They still excelled on and off the field, and the proof is in the result.

And on the sports field? Well, the Taos boys soccer team had a nearly perfect season. But the pride of 2021 athletics for THS was the Cheer team. Under the leadership of senior captain Makayla Etzel, the squad took the title at the 2021 State Spirit Competition at the Pit. They dominated their opponents like fierce cats. In the end, they claimed their prize, and you should hear them roar!

Numerous THS students received scholarships this year, including National Merit

2k21 I could not be more proud of a group of young people than I am of you. Four years ago, Gordo and I stood in front of you at freshman orientation introducing ourselves as your class sponsors. I could not have imagined what a lucky person I was beginning this journey with you. I had no idea how blessed I was going to be to walk this journey with you.Through many hours tie-dying shirts and building floats till midnight, storming assemblies in our maroon, going undefeated in the homecoming float competitions, powder puff, planning graduation and so much more, we have laughed and grown together. We have suffered immeasurable loss together. We have made great accomplishments together. But mostly, from my perspective, you took on high school, faced challenges, overcame covid, and grew into amazing young adults and you allowed me to walk with you through these amazing four years. How lucky am I?!?! I am so honored, so proud, and so much better for having known you. I shall miss you all. Go show the world the you I have seen and nothing will stop you. Love you 2k21. Dr.T

– Dr. Toni S. Wright

a monthlong series of recognition activities – including the presentation of diplomas to graduates while adhering to social distancing, and messaging with banners and yard signs.

But COVID-19 school closures have upended the traditional pomp and circumstance, leaving seniors feeling untethered.

PEÑASCO HIGH SCHOOL Excelling in the class, leading in the community

R

eading, writing, arithmetic? Yeah, sure, Penasco High School has classes for those. But it also has an attitude that education can be fun; a firmly held belief that sparking a student’s interest in learning is the most important part of education. And the Class of 2021 took that to heart. Want to get a little yoga into your school day? PHS has a club for that. Love podcasts? PHS has a club for that. Want to learn how to create using a 3D printer? You better believe PHS has a club for that. In the classroom, the Class of 2021 excelled, but it was outside, in the community where their footprints were truly felt. The Penasco High School Envirothon Team, “Camo Crocodilus” placed 2nd in Forestry, 3rd in Oral Scenario Presentations and 3rd Team Overall at the 2021 State Envirothon competition. Coach Mercella Córdova, and students Jolene Archuleta, David Lucero, and Ashley Zamora hope to bring that same environmentallyconscious attitude to their home community. Additionally, Penasco excelled on the athletic front. David Lucero, Elias Archibeque, Maricela MacAuley and Analise MacAuley all made the 5AA All-District Team in basketball. PHS is committed to helping students learn real-world skills (for instance, they secured a $5,000 LANL grant for the purchasing of welding equipment), in addition to classic education. And this year was no different. PHS simply added remote learning to the list of skills. As the Class of 2021 goes off into the unknown, they will be better equipped for the challenges of the new normal, thanks to the tireless efforts of the faculty, staff, parents, and the students themselves.

MORENO VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL Working on the Present, Focusing on the Future

T

he year didn’t start out so great for anyone. But the students, staff, faculty, and even the parents marched ahead, determined to make lemonade out of the lemon that was the 2020-21 school year. The Moreno Valley Unified School District got together last summer and, with Principal Latoysha Brown at the helm, formed a comprehensive—and we mean comprehensive, the document is 31 pages long—COVID-19 Prevention Plan, put the necessary equipment and infrastructure in place (like plexiglass shields around desk tops), and then got to work planning a great year for the students. Though the year ended on a high note, with masks coming off, and friends reunited, it began with a series of brand new challenges. From distance learning to grab-and-go lunch programs, the staff and faculty worked to keep the year as normal as possible. Moreno Valley High School is known as a bastion of art and science. In past years, students have won robotics competitions and numerous art awards. The goal for the class of 2021 was to ensure that they received the same level of opportunity as students in previous classes. To that end, MVHS instituted its “Focus Forward” program. This strategic vision was aimed at helping students remember to not get bogged down in the negative and to keep pushing forward. By the end of the year, the MVHS choir was nailing perfect timing through Zoom, students were excitedly applying for college (MVHS has a graduation rate of roughly 91%), and The Viking Post—the student newspaper—was humming again with opinion pieces and stories about student life. From the drab, quarantined days of late 2020, to the clear, spring skies of today, the Class of 2021 has worked to keep smiles on their faces and determination in their eyes. 16

Creating the community-minded student activist

M

ost high schools like to stress community support and student involvement, but Vista Grande High School takes it to another level. At Vista Grande, students are treated to a holistic educational approach, one that emphasizes community-based projects and interaction with Taosenos who are outside the Vista Grande sphere. To that end, seniors at Vista Grande have several challenges to face during a normal school year. They must plan and complete their capstone project, which involves documenting their work with various community endeavors. At the end of the year, graduating students must complete their Senior Passage, a presentation of work samples that 20

demonstrate the student’s mastery of various academic and personal skills. They then present their projects to a panel of community members who ask questions and offer support. The Class of 2021 had an even bigger challenge, due to the pandemic. But in some ways, being useful to their community became easier to do, and much more needed. Throughout the pandemic, Vista Grande students could be seen handing out grab-and-go meals, assisting with testing and vaccine clinics, and delivering take out for local restaurants. They were interning with Taos Land Trust, HCMC, and various other Taos entities. Few schools have done as much for their communities.

But such community involvement is to be expected from students at a school that has an official Student Activism Leadership Team (just one of the many diverse programs offered at VGHS, which range from the important—Indian Education Initiative Grant—to the fun—the Strategy Games Club. Now, the school year is finally over. No more wondering about in-person learning. No more hoping sports get back on track. Now, the students of Vista Grande get to go into the future with a firm concept of community, activism, and perhaps most importantly, how to really help.

CONGRATULATIONS! A

s a former Taos High School student, I want to congratulate all of the seniors graduating this year. I can only imagine how hard it must have been to stay strong through this crazy year. One of the most important things I learned from my time at THS is “grit.” Grit is waking up everyday to conquer the tasks at hand. Grit is making sure that you are punctual and on time with your responsibilities. Grit is not giving up and taking pride in success. As you move on to the next chapter of life just know that you have the power and it is important to keep your goals and ambition on the forefront of your horizon. Remember that there are many small steps in the journey of success. Find something you love and master it!

it takes a village...

T

ucked away in the mountains of northern New Mexico, Questa High School is all about one thing: community. And in 2021, QHS got a chance to prove it. For example, on Earth Day this year, Questa High School hosted and participated in a tree planting and trash pick-up event. But the really exciting part is that they gathered Questa students and parents together to envision a new skate park for the town. The entire event was designed to clear a spot for a community hangout (in this case, a skate park) and to promote student art by directing participants to the Success Art gallery at the Youth Center. Need more proof? Questa High School not only provided free grab-and-go meals for students during the pandemic, they also did the legwork of finding out details of the EBT assistance program and conveying that to their students and their families.

22

photos by MORGAN TIMMS/TAOS NEWS

Questa Independent School District also continued to be a leader and innovator when it comes to alternative ways to motivate and educate its students. The school introduced an elective course on the science of concussions. But perhaps the most exciting advancement was that six students were selected for the inaugural class of a new skilled building trades program, which is a partnership between QHS, LANL, UNM-Taos, New Mexico Building and Construction Trades Council, UA 412 Local Plumbers and Pipefitters, and the Questa Economic Development Fund. The program teaches students trade skills and offers dual credit with UNM-Taos. Whether it is the vaunted Wildcats basketball team, or the student council leading community activism, or the staff handing out iPads to needy kids, or the faculty keeping the students informed about cutting edge topics, Questa High School is the keystone of its community.

Eddie Duran MALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

Taos High School

42

ddie Duran is that special kind of athlete. The one who smiles and shakes his opponent’s hand after every game, win or lose. The kind that picks his teammates up after a tough loss. The kind who becomes best friends with his biggest rival. (Duran loves running against his best friend Gilbert Valdez, who runs for Penasco.) Because for Duran, life is all about balance and building relationships.

As an honor student and a three-sport athlete, he has his sights set on accomplishing even more in the future. Last year he qualified for the USATF National Junior Olympic Cross-Country Championships in Madison, Wisconsin. He is also a member of the state club running team New Mexico Sol Running Club. Next, Eddie is off to college to compete and excel as he always does. And, of course, he has his sights set on a return to the cross-country course, this time in the NCAA. He knows the road will be tough, but Eddie says that is exactly what he wants.

“My goal is to become the best runner and athlete I can be while also being the best student that I can be,” Duran says on his college recruiting profile. “[I also know] how much each individual player or runner means to the team, “I’m always down for a challenge after all we are only as good as our and I love learning.” weakest link.”

Murphy’s talent may be easy and abundant, but her road was not. “I made it to the Western National Championships [freshman year] and I placed there and it was such a great experience,” Murphy said. “I was on top of the world. But then, sophomore year, things got hard.” Murphy was still young and new to the level of competition she was facing. To make it even more difficult, she began training with the Level 10 gymnasts—the highest level offered by High Altitude gymnastics, where Murphy trained. Then, a week before the State Championships, she dislocated her elbow and had to sit out. “I had a pretty rough four-month recovery,” she said. “Plus, during that period, the [High Altitude gymnastics] coaches moved away. I was left with a choice to either quit or move and train at a new gym.” here was no crowd to be hushed in the empty gymnasium as Taos High School Senior Ciara Murphy stepped onto the mat for her floor routine at the 2021 NM USAG gymnastics state meet (Level 9 senior division) on March 27. The meet was entirely virtual, with judges watching over Zoom. But if there had been a crowd in attendance, they would’ve fallen silent. Murphy had been a force in New Mexico gymnastics since she first hit the scene her freshman year, making it all the way to the Western National Championships. Now she was taking to the floor for the final routine of her gymnastics career.

T

44

At the end of the day, she stood, yet again, on the medal stand, with gold in her hand. The Taos native placed first in the floor exercise, the balance beam, and the All-Around.

There wasn’t a facility or staff locally who was equipped to handle the level of training she needed. In the end, Murphy found herself commuting between Taos and Albuquerque, staying with a host family, and training with every second of free time. “I was still healing from my injury, but I wasn’t ready to give up on the dream I had from the time I was a little girl,” she said. It was a long, slow road, but in the end, Murphy prevailed. Murphy said her journey in gymnastics is now over. She does not intend to pursue it when she attends college in the Fall. Though she isn’t sure what she wants to major in yet, she said she is looking at Biomedical Engineering or Neuroscience. As for athletics, Murphy said she intends to keep it simple. “Maybe I’ll get back into running.”

Eugene Jackson

Taos High School

Questa High School

Jonnea is a student with many talents. She is Senior Class President, Co-Captain of the THS Varsity Cheer Team, and Taos Municipal Schools female student school board representative. She was also a part of the Leadership Class at Taos High for the last three years. Jonnea is an honor student and has been inducted into the National Honor Society.

It’s not always easy finding outlets for competition, especially in a pandemic, but Eugene Jackson of Questa did just that. This young man played in two sports, basketball and baseball, during his high school career. Though COVID sidetracked much of his baseball path, on the basketball court, Eugene has dominated, putting up 6 points a game on average (well above the national average, by the way) and stifling opponents as a leader on the defensive end.

“I’ve been cheering since I was four years old. I’ve had the privilege of being an All-Stars cheerleader with Taos Xtreme and Santa Fe Elite Spirit. This is my 5th year as a Varsity Cheerleader.” She’s cheered at Taos High School and Questa High School and is a multi-time State Champion. And, oh yeah, she also plays volleyball and basketball (at Questa.)

46

Walter Brown

Penasco High School On the outskirts of the village of Penasco, there is a runner. His name is Walter Brown and this young man is a cross-country star. His legs have carried him through his high school years, despite the fact that the season didn’t happen last year, and was severely abbreviated this year. Luckily, Walter is a two-sport athlete and he has a backup: basketball. Walter plays guard for Panthers basketball and though the team had an inconsistent year, he was a dominant force and a leader in the locker room.

Haily Apodaca

Taos High School Haily Apodaca cheers. She cheers to get the crowd warmed up. She cheers to make people happy. She cheers because she is really, really good at it. This Taos High School cheerleader has been involved in the sport for years, but with her senior year looking more uncertain by the day, finding something to cheer about just got harder and harder. So what did she do? She got the team together, they cheered their hearts out, and they went on to win the State Championship.

E

E

F

Milo Collignon

Taos High School Whether on the mound facing down hitters, manning the infield facing down runners, or hitting the soccer pitch facing down strikers, dual sport athlete, Milo has certainly shown his athleticism in his high school career, but one thing the stat sheets don’t show is his leadership and his attitude. Milo has risen to become a team leader at Taos High School and his prowess as a goalkeeper is one of the main factors that propelled the THS boys’ soccer team to so much success this season.

F

Aaliyah Suazo

Taos High School Aaliyah puts the “All” in All-Star. This tough competitor is known for her aggressive style on the soccer pitch, but the truth is that opponents on the basketball court, the track and field track, and the cross-country course have all learned to fear her as well. Though Aaliyah could (and did) play just about everywhere on the field, her senior year saw her standing in the net as the Tigers’ goalkeeper. She racked up nearly 800 minutes in front of the goal and averaged nearly 6 saves a game over her career.

Questa Adventure out to

On the Enchanted Circle, Off the beaten path. Questa’s untapped rivers and wide-open wilderness areas is where anglers and adventurers go to get away. It’s the unspoiled stop on the Enchanted Circle Scenic Byway that inspires artists and is surprisingly unexpected. Your home away from home is a cozy cabin, Airbnb, riverfront RV spot or secluded campsite. The “Welcome!” at family-owned shops and restaurants is genuine, and the cultural heritage is real.
