ADOBE FIRE Where there’s smoke there’s probably been Carmen Velarde / STORY BY VIRGINIA L. CLARK

ENCHANTED HOMES CXXIIII enchantedhomeseller.com
THE WILDLY POPULAR “BEEHIVE” FIREPLACE MADE OF ADOBE is one of the central and most engaging symbols of Southwestern architecture around. Erroneously named “kiva” fireplaces by misinformed tourists, this hooded, squat-bottomed adobe fireplace has a long history in the Southwest and our very own Doña Carmen Romero Velarde, at age 90, is one of the last traditional enjarradoras/women plasterers who created most of the notable adobe fireplaces throughout Taos and in many places around the world. Throughout her 50-year adobe career, Velarde traveled to Colorado, California and Texas, twice to the Smithsonian, as well as Alaska, Hawaii and Japan, among other places, to build her signature fireplaces and outdoor adobe ovens called hornos. Here in Taos they can be seen in the The Sagebrush Inn & Convention Center, The Taos Inn, The Quality Inn, Inn on the Rio and many, many more. Through the years, word spread about her style – the addition of shelves, nichos (recessed openings) and even bancos (adobe benches) on the
3 Chamber Welcome
fireplaces became her trademark. She also made retablos and santos – images of saints carved in wood. She sometimes would leave a retablo in a nicho when she was finished, blessing the people and the custom work she created. No two of her fireplaces are alike. The Adobe Bar at the Historic Taos Inn is so named because of Carmen Velarde’s adobe work. Then owner, the late Feenie Lipscomb, said in a 1988 Harwood Museum dedication speech that Velarde’s suggestion to put exposed adobe bricks on the front of the bar inspired the name, “The Adobe Bar.” “With the help of her sons Trini and Juan, she put in bancos, nichos and incredible fireplaces throughout the Inn, each one different,” Lipscomb wrote about Velarde’s work. “Some had wood boxes, some were off the floor if space was tight; some were round; some were squarish – all were beautiful. Some had tiers for pots and santos to stand on, like the one in Doc Martin’s Restaurant.” BORN IN 1928 IN RANCHOS DE TAOS, Velarde was raised by her half-Mescalero Apache and half-Taos Pueblo grandmother and Mexican-European grandfather – Trinidad and Julian Ybarra. Like other Taoseños of those times, the Ybarras used adobe, vigas and latillas in their construction projects. They harvested the materials themselves and made their own bricks and adobe mix. In the winter they would spin and dye wool with red chili powder, weave with other families and trade for different kinds of wool. With no electricity until 1948, the water came from the well for drinking and the ditch for cleaning. Anita Rodríguez, a Taos artist and former building contractor, observes online that prior to the turn of the 20th century, “80 percent of religious and secular buildings were adobe. In an infinite variety of strikingly different styles, each earth-building culture developed its own unique architecture, adapted to local climates and available materials, created to accommodate the patterns of that culture’s lifestyle. From subtropical China, to Egypt, to Africa and the Americas, plain dirt – a free, universally available, nonpolluting and climatologically adaptable material – has housed mankind more generously, longer and with more creative originality (because of its infinite plasticity) than any other material.” (Never Say “Kiva” Fireplace, Green Fire Times, July 2018). She has trained hundreds of men, women and students from middle school to college in the art of building adobe fireplaces and other Southwestern architectural techniques. UP UNTIL SHE WAS 88 IN 2016, VELARDE STILL HELPED WITH THE ENJARRE/MUDDING OF SAN FRANCISCO DE ASÍS CHURCH IN RANCHOS DE TAOS. Her work has been exhibited all over the country. One of her fireplaces and one of her traditional New Mexican ovens are in the Smithsonian’s permanent exhibit; and in the Smithsonian’s 1992 Festival of American Folklife she was recognized for “exceptional contributions to the increase and diffusion of knowledge about cultures and traditions which enrich our nation and the world.” TOP: CARMEN VELARDE WAS MOST WELL KNOWN FOR HER UNIQUE FIREPLACES, ONE OF WHICH IS AT THE SAGEBRUSH GRILL IN TAOS. MIDDLE: ADOBE ARTIST CARMEN VELARDE POSES FOR A PORTRAIT IN HER RANCHOS DE TAOS HOME. BOTTOM: THE FIREPLACE AT THE TAOS INN IS AMONG MANY AROUND TAOS DESIGNED AND BUILT BY CARMEN VELARDE.
She has received the Award of Merit in appreciation for her work and the Governor’s Award for Excellence and Achievement in the Arts. She was named Woman of the Year in 1995 by the town of Taos. She is also included in the book “Remarkable Women of Taos,” published in July 2013 by Nighthawk Press.

9 QUESTIONS
IT’S GETTING COLD OUTSIDE.
A woodstove with a roaring fire sounds good right now. BOB BISHOP TIERRA WOOD STOVES BY CINDY BROWN
HOW DID TIERRA WOOD STOVES COME TO BE ESTABLISHED? I was working for Colorado Log Homes in Taos. In 1979, we brought in a few wood stoves to display here at our show home. Within the first month, we sold 13 or 14 wood stoves. When Colorado Log Homes went out of business, my wife, Bonnie, suggested that I might want to open a store to sell wood stoves. I contacted several manufacturers. They said they would like to have an outlet in Taos. In April 1980, we opened our store and the rest is history. WHAT WERE YOUR GOALS WHEN YOU ENVISIONED THE NEW SHOWROOM? Our first store was in the building where Cottam’s Ski and Outdoor Shop is now, south of downtown. That space didn’t have a warehouse to store the stoves, so when someone bought a stove, I would have to run across the street to my storage unit to get it. In 1985, we started carrying hot tubs, and I knew we needed more space and storage. I found a lot for sale and we built this showroom. We don’t carry hot tubs any more, but now we also have gas stoves and window coverings. WHEN DID YOU ADD WINDOW COVERINGS? When we would visit someone’s home to see what type of wood stove might be appropriate, we would notice that some people didn’t have window coverings at all and that most of the heat was escaping through the windows. Since 1985, we have offered both stoves and window coverings. I measure for the blinds myself, and we offer free blind repair to the original purchaser. WHAT TRENDS HAVE YOU SEEN IN THE BUSINESS OF WOOD STOVES AND WINDOW COVERINGS OVER TIME? At first there was only one kind of stove made by Ashley available in town. We brought in eight different manufacturers from Norway, France and the Northwest that were the best at that time; they were highly efficient. In 1989, the Environmental Protection Agency introduced new standards to make wood stoves cleaner burning. Some of the manufacturers couldn’t meet the standards. Nine out of ten of them went out of business. Now the federal Department of Energy has introduced even more stringent standards. Wood stoves are already very efficient and release few pollutants into the air. If similar standards were applied to fireplaces and cookstoves, the air would be a lot cleaner. The cellular honey-combed blinds we sell have high R-value and keep 80 percent of the heat in during the winter and 80 percent of the heat out during the summer. With all window coverings, a primary concern is preventing children from becoming entangled in the cords. Some of the blinds are now cordless or have only one cord. 30
ENCHANTED HOMES CXXIIII enchantedhomeseller.com
WHAT’S NEW FOR THIS SEASON? A new trend this year is the linear fireplace. It is a contemporary look that you may have seen in hotel lobbies, and some people have them in their homes, too. We can special order these fireplaces, along with many others. WHAT IS ON THE MIND OF YOUR CUSTOMERS RIGHT NOW? People are thinking about keeping warm with wood stoves. They help reduce the heating costs and after about two years, people find they will likely pay for themselves. For people with natural gas, some are switching to gas fireplaces because natural gas is inexpensive now. HOW DO YOU SEE WOOD STOVES BEING PART OF TAOS STYLE? I think wood stoves are part of the Taos lifestyle. Many people like kiva fireplaces and although they can be beautiful, they are only 10% efficient and create a lot of smoke, adding to our wintertime air pollution. When building a house, you can construct a kiva fireplace around a clean burning insert and make a kiva fireplace that is very environmentally friendly. If an existing kiva fireplace is big enough, we can retrofit with a more efficient wood stove or gas insert. One of the models we use is a Jotul stove it is a small box stove that is very narrow. If you take off the cast iron legs, you can slide it into a kiva fireplace, hook it up, line the chimney with stainless steel and convert your kiva into an efficient heater. I replaced my kiva fireplace with a free standing wood stove and think it is very beautiful. The wood stove acts as an all-night furnace. WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT WHAT YOU DO? Some people at my age are thinking about retiring. I’m still having fun. To me, this is like an art gallery with sculpture. It is a path of the heart, providing warmth with green energy and helping people keep the heat in their homes. I love to come to work every day. WHAT MORE WOULD YOU LIKE PEOPLE TO KNOW ABOUT TIERRA WOOD STOVES? We have about 60 different units in the showroom and can order anything available in the hearth industry. Come visit us and we can show you brochures and videos for many models. Tierra Wood Stoves at 1519 Paseo del Pueblo Sur or visit them on-line at tierrawoodstoves.com. his home’s address, 9 Plaza Vieja which translates into ‘Old Plaza,’ speaks to the historic charm discreetly tucked behind an unassuming wall. This 3-bedroom/2-bath home is 300 years old. At one time, it was part of the original Ranchos de Taos fort that surrounded the nearby San Francisco de Asis Church, itself a National Historic Landmark. It is the home’s more modern history, however, that makes this a highly sought-after piece of real estate. Since 1995 it has been owned and lovingly renovated by Chef René Mettler and his wife Kimberly Armstrong, owners of the highly popular Italian restaurant, Trading Post Café located at 4179 State Road 68, Ranchos de Taos.
L ABOR OF LOVE “I met René in Maui. We were both working for the Grand Hyatt. René had wanted to retire, so we packed up and originally intended to move to Sedona. But we stopped in Taos –– and never left,” said Kimberly.

Working for the Hyatt Corp., the couple was accustomed to moving every few years. So the fact that that they bought a home and a restaurant in the same year and expanded both over the past two decades, Armstrong acknowledges, “The mountain really did call us home.” Mettler passed away in 2016. The couple renovated the home in stages over the years. From designing a professional chef’s kitchen to outfitting modern baths to installing cedar-lined closets, no detail for modern living has been overlooked. “This house was a labor of love. I give credit to René. It was his vision,” said Armstrong.

he compound consists of the 2,504-squarefoot main home, a standalone casita that could be used as an artist studio, and a storage building for tools and gear. The landscaping draws you right in with a creative mix of brick, flagstone, decorative rock, ceramic pots, and topiaries that fire the imagination. There are koi ponds, high conifer and deciduous trees, stone walls, wrought iron fencing, wooden benches, and outdoor fire pits to gather around and take in the sumptuous experience, which is very private. The courtyard was an evolution of designs, trying out different boulders, trees, and amounts of grass. “The grass softens the hard surface of the flagstone,” said Armstrong.
Rather than one singular, homogenous courtyard, the exterior of the home is made up of a series of outdoor areas, each with their own character and situated at different levels. For example there is a quiet seating area right outside the master bedroom with its own contemplative atmosphere. There is an elevated patio to the side of the house with a pass-through window from the kitchen. And there is a raised decorative herb garden for easy picking and a back area that doubles as an orchard and a garden for the hearty growing of local vegetables. “We are both outdoors people. We did a lot of entertaining and catering in the courtyard. We held a fundraiser for Stray Hearts Animal Shelter here and we did a lot of wedding receptions and anniversaries,” said Armstrong.
A CHEF-DESIGNED KITCHEN Sitting in today’s modern kitchen, it’s hard to imagine that at one time it was part of a chicken coop. Mettler and Armstrong renovated the kitchen with top quality in mind. The features range from double-door refrigerator with bottom freezer drawer, to six-burner stove with hooded range, to a deep farmhouse-style sink. Local contractor Bob Loveless designed the stonework of kitchen counters and backsplash. 48

“All of the plumbing and electrical wiring was redone. All of it was brought up to code,” said Pavel Lukes of Dreamcatcher Real Estate Co. Inc.
This home is perfect for the homeowner who loves to entertain in a historic, architectural setting.
Overhead pot hangers and open shelving are trademarks of the speed and efficiency in which professional chefs cook –– so they can spend more of their time mingling with guests.
An open and spacious wine room takes a different tack than those typically relegated to closets and/or sub-floors. The open shelving and bottle racks are accentuated by a stained-glass skylight and the room is temperature-controlled with the aforementioned thick adobe walls.
For example, the kitchen has a concealed washer and dryer. This touch is not unusual, but the cabinetry was built in such a way, at waist-high level and with an adjoining window, that it serves as a pass-through countertop for food and drinks to guests enjoying the patio outside.
HISTORIC CHARACTER The interior of the home has the character of old Taos renovated with modern-day amenities. Thick adobe walls provide natural insulation throughout the seasons. In the old-style build of the house, some doorways are low and there are some steps into rooms. Saltillo tiles, herringbone latilla ceilings, and wooden viga beams harmoniously blend to give the home an authentic feel and warmth. “Every door throughout the house is antique or custom-made. There are no two doors alike,” said Armstrong, pointing out the artisan craftsmanship of each room.
“We have capacity for close to 1,000 bottles,” said Armstrong. With windows and doors opening out to the lengthy wisteria-topped portal, the decision to sit inside or outside is a wonderful choice. “Artist Ed Sandoval helped build the portal and outdoor fireplace,” said Armstrong, also noting that there is a Sandoval sculpture in the outdoors area. This was years ago so Armstrong couldn’t recall how she and Mettler met Sandoval but says, “It was probably through the restaurant.” Peter Barlow, who is well-known locally for his exquisite handcraftsmanship, crafted a Dutch door for the third bedroom. For the imaginative homeowner, the present third bedroom and media room can be easily reconfigured into any desired use.
The master bedroom is ensuite, with a modern bath and rain shower head fixture. The tile was also done by Bob Loveless.
Indeed, various artists, artisans and craftsmen well-known throughout Taos have either contributed to the building or décor of the home, or had pieces collected by Mettler and Armstrong.
The formal living room is set up salon-style with multiple seating areas. There is another informal living room on the far side of the house that presently serves as a media room.
“Larry Bell and Thom Wheeler were favorite artists, too,” said Armstrong. “We wanted to incorporate as much local art history as we could.”

MORGAN TIMMS
Helping people buy and sell their homes has been an enjoyable second career for Johnston. He makes sure he provides a zero-pressure environment for buyers. He asks them to consider how they feel about a particular home: both the strong points and the negatives, so that he can help them assess the downsides and decide if they will be deal breakers.

JOHN JOHNSTON
BERKSHIRE HATHAWAY HOMESERVICES BY CINDY BROWN
When John Johnston retired from a long career in business development, sales and marketing, he and his wife spent several years looking for the perfect place to relocate. Taos was their top choice. “We were looking for a place with several features, including high mountains, small town environment and a relaxed Southwestern lifestyle. Taos won out because it was the closest set of mountains to Dallas, where our daughter and grandsons live,” he says. Now, he and his wife enjoy hiking, cross country skiing, snowshoeing and riding their fat tire bikes. After he was here a year, Johnston decided to become a Realtor. He received his New Mexico real estate license and joined Berkshire Hathaway Home Services in Taos, which has access to one of the largest residential real estate networks in the world. Johnston brings his time in Taos, along with his business background to help buyers find the right home. He remembers his experience purchasing a home from out-of-state and is able to help streamline the process for these buyers. He also enjoys working with local families to find the right home. “One of my favorite home sales was for a modest property purchased by a local Taoseño veteran and his wife. They had raised their family locally, without ever owning their own home. We were able to locate a home, and
Most people know right away if they like a house, but then there are the important details to work out, such as finding a price that works for both the buyer and seller and arranging financing. With out-of-town buyers, he asks them about their location preferences and price range, helping them develop a clear vision of the house they want. He then previews the homes available for them in advance and sends photos of the houses, along with his recommendations. He asks questions such as: Do you want to live in mountains, near the base of the mountains, or in open country with 360 degree view? When the buyers come to town, Johnston plans out an efficient route that will allow them to see four or five properties in the way that makes the most sense. “In the space of my career, my wife and I moved seven or eight times and bought and sold the same number of houses. My approach is to look at everything, pick the best and get rid of the rest,” he says. WINTER BUYING Weather is always a consideration when selling a home during the winter months, points out Johnston. He notices that the number of buyers is reduced from the summer, but those who are here in the winter are more serious buyers. They often come ready to make an offer. TAOS STYLE People looking to relocate to Taos or purchase a second home want to experience the Southwest lifestyle with its food, history, culture, arts, outdoor recreation and architecture. “They are looking for accents such as large vigas, high ceilings, quiet evenings, and a wide open feeling both inside and outside their home,” says Johnston. “Taos offers an open star-filled night sky and clear 360 degree views of high mountains and the wide valley. In Taos, right out your front door, is a wide range of recreational activity, regardless of the season.” MARKET TRENDS Activity in the Taos real estate market has increased significantly over the last year. Johnston points out that the market is very tight for homes below $400,000 and that few homes are being built right now. “All of these factors are causing existing home prices to increase. It’s a great time to sell in Taos even though we are heading into the winter,” he explains. TAOS FRIENDLY Johnston says, “Taos is a diverse community of people that genuinely want to help a newcomer settle. When my wife and I came here, there was no shortage of people who volunteered advice and directions. I recommend Taos to anyone who is tired of the daily stress and impersonal lifestyle of a large city. We only have so many days on this earth. Why waste them sitting in city traffic when you can live, play or retire in the Land of Enchantment?”

Not always. And not everyone. But so long as one presents themselves as clean I don’t think anyone else gives a rat’s butt about what drapes other bodies. Now that we have been here almost 24 years, I see Taos more as a member of the culture rather than as a witness to behavior patterns I was not accustomed to. Now I don’t notice who dresses well and who doesn’t as there are always folks that like to present themselves rather spiffily and others who rebel against anything representing a consumer culture. Here one cannot tell a book by its cover. No way. No how.
TAOS STYLE... BY HARVEY BLAUSTEIN
When I first got the assignment for this column it came with apologies from the editor. She said, “I’m not sure exactly what you do with it, but the subject for this next issue is, Taos Style.” Now to some that might seem like a challenge, but for me it was a walk in the park – I mean walk in the high desert. That’s because I have always told those who have asked, and many who have not, that there is no such thing as Taos Style. There is such a thing as Santa Fe style. The elements of a real, albeit small, city taken with some doses of prosperity, and a history of art – including all that wonderful turquoise jewelry – to me has created a place where long skirts and cowboy boots are expected on women. And men wear trousers and are not always dressed in jeans. Grunge doesn’t go well in the City Different whereas here in Taos it has been brought to an art form. But I get ahead of myself. When we first spent time in Taos, we always were trying to express to those on the East Coast, where we are from, how different our new paradise was. One of the ways was by telling folks that here people put on in the morning the clothes they took off the night before.
I know lawyers and doctors in this town who show up for work in jeans. Some like Dr. Michael Kaufman will add a tie to whatever shirt he is wearing with his Wranglers. It seems he once wore one as a result of some out-of-office business, and patients commented positively when he got back to the clinic so he never gave it up. Then there are guys like Stephen Natelson, a local attorney who has been here about as long as Mike, who is never seen in jeans. Not that Steve is fancy, but he does prefer a more styled corduroy look. Native Americans can be seen in traditional garb that could have come from hundreds of years ago. I do see some Texas women who like to dress up on Saturday night – or every night. I do see folks who live in the wilds of Carson, but, for the most part, no one stares at either around here. We are a live and let live community and I love that about us. We also don’t wear a lot of white. And the rule that you can wear white only between Memorial Day and Labor Day that one lives by in the big cities, doesn’t apply in Taos. Here one wears what color one wants when one chooses. Oh, how I love the freedom that is Taos. Taos is not impacted by what is in and what is out. And the only rule is that there are no rules. Consumerism does not flourish here and comfort means more than style. One won’t see any Bally shoes on our men nor Manolo Blahnik stilettos on our women. Heck, Hispanic men are rarely caught in sandals. Taos formal generally means jeans and some kind of jacket although I did anger a local gallery owner some years back on New Year’s Eve when the dress code was formal and I wore a nice pair of jeans with a spiffy tuxedo jacket and shirt with a bolo tie. I thought I looked cool, but I did not get invited back the next year. Some folks, even in Taos, can’t take a joke! Folks here rarely ask what the dress code is for any gathering. Here we wear what we want when we want and style plays little part. Or is that Taos style defined? That debate we can have another day.. Harvey Blaustein is a retired attorney and local real estate broker.
