Forging Community Partnerships Towards Food and Environmental Security In 2021, the Covid-19 pandemic persisted in deepening the crises around us and affecting even more of our countrymen. In this world of the ‘new normal’, the Tan Yan Kee Foundation, Inc. continued to stay relevant through the various assistance and solutions it invested in. This year on the ground, with its commitment to the environment as well as to the communities it touched upon, it continued to build not only dignity and resilience, but also productivity and sustainability.

T

his year, in spite of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Foundation continued with pursuing its goal of becoming an exemplary model in environmental stewardship and farmbased food production initiatives.

The Foundation’s Legacy Forest Project experts planted trees and protected forests, while keeping on with its food-based initiative, supporting vulnerable communities during the pandemic, and promoting dignity as it advanced its methods in food productivity. This was accomplished by engaging in sustainable innovations with community partners, learning from what works and what does not, thus gathering collective knowledge and sharing impact with others.

Under its environmental program, the Legacy Forest Project has consistently brought focus on safekeeping the environment and maintaining biodiversity.

Over 70,000 seedlings of various species were planted at the Project’s two reforestation sites in Carranglan, Nueva Ecija which could help draw more abundant and clean water supply and increase carbon sequestration potential per tree. In addition, the 285 hectare of endemic forest within the main protected area continues to abound with biodiversity.

TYKFI’s agroforestry and chili farm produced 30,000 kilograms of various crops this year. By growing healthy produce, improving its access, and building awareness in sustainable farming, the Foundation serves as a bridge to alleviate and prevent urban food insecurity. Food productivity in turn also helps build resiliency amid these challenging times.

As the economic burden is taking a toll on countless families, we recognized the need to directly respond at a community level.

As a result, TYKFI gave out rice and fresh produce to self-isolating, quarantined families. In cooperation with PAL Foundation, TYKFI took part in community pantries to serve agency frontline personnel as well as with Eton Properties Philippines, Inc. to serve residents and COVID-19 patients at the Hospicio De San Jose. Community pantries this year have become an extraordinary expression of human compassion with countless donors remaining nameless and pouring out empathy in abundance. It has been a way to share what one has, closing the aid gap with those in need.

The Foundation made fresh vegetables available to employees of sister companies at very low cost. Meanwhile, TYKFI also supported Masaganang Palayan by giving hybrid palay seeds and farm inputs to marginalized farmers for an efficient use of their land. Amid the supply chain challenges that arose from the lockdowns, TYKFI sees to it that it does its part to combat food insecurity and to offer reprieve to vulnerable communities from the hardships of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Throughout the year, TYKFI has completed several community-based relief responses. The HOPE Caravan, together with the donations of MacroAsia Catering Services, Inc., rolled out healthy meals for our medical frontliners from seven hospitals in Manila, one community parish, and an elementary school.

MacroAsia’s partnership also brought ready-to-eat snacks to 4,000 families of Marikina affected by the destructive floods of Typhoon Ulysses with the help of the volunteers from Philippine National Bank. With the difficulties that Typhoon Odette brought towards the end of the year, the TYKFI’s HOPE Caravan also brought much needed aid to worst hit areas.

TYKFI held a vaccination drive for employees and third party service providers to hasten protection and the restoration of economic activity in communities. The vaccination was given for free to speed up the healing process in the provincial areas.

The Foundation also donated various essential medical supplies to local government units in the Metro and hospitals like the Sta. Ana Hospital and Ospital ng Maynila.

Under its program in Education, TYKFI assisted a total of 142 farmers’ children to promote equality in education, 11 scholars in agriculture and forestry to rear up future environmental and agricultural experts, 92 exemplary college students, 21 law scholars to promote law and prosperity, and two medical specialty scholars abroad.

This school year being the second school year of no in-person classes, TYKFI also came to the rescue of three elementary schools in Ilocos Sur and two schools in Nueva Vizcaya, providing much needed printers and supplies to ensure uninterrupted printing of modules and learning for the students in these poor communities.

To sustain these students and their families, TYKFI also conducted rice distribution for six public elementary schools as well as high school scholars from Saint Teresita’s Academy in Nueva Vizcaya.

The online trainings conducted by Foundation for Upgrading the Standards of Education (FUSE) focused on the holistic learning approach for both the teachers and the students, with partnerships forged to cater specialties in several subject areas. Meanwhile, the Tan Yan Kee Library in Binondo, Manila continued its summer class by holding it virtually as it brought the Chinese language and culture to life to enthusiastic parents and children alike.

At this point in our journey, I would like to thank the men and women of the Tan Yan Kee Foundation, Inc., the Board of Trustees, officers and staff, and especially our partner food producers for their dedication to our mission and vision despite the harsh circumstances brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic this past year.

I would also like to offer my sincere congratulations to the Foundation for winning the Asian Sustainability Leadership Award for Social Sustainability and Community Development.

During these unprecedented times, let us focus our programs to respond to the needs of our nation, and in our own way, remove barriers to solving these challenges.

Dr. Lucio C. Tan Legacy Forest Project

T

he Foundation continued addressing the pressing concern of climate change and environmental sustainability as it marked its seventh year of implementing the Dr. Lucio C.

Tan Legacy Forest project.

For 2021, at the 930-hectare planting site in Carranglan, Nueva Ecija, around 77,748 seedlings of Alibangbang, Narra, and Sampaloc were planted covering an estimate of 31 hectares of land. Other activities included the process of carbon stock inventory, fire prevention, and illegal activities monitoring through round-the-clock stationary and roving guards.

To evaluate the development of the reforestation efforts on the 56-hectare planting site, the TYKFI team of experts conducted Forest Inventory Assessment and Analysis on the said area. It aims to determine the physical characteristics of the area; determine the stand characteristics (height and diameter) of the growing forest stock; identify the species diversity, distribution, and density; estimate the forest carbon stock; and produce a baseline database for further studies and forest conservation and management.

Meanwhile, Mangium trees or Acacia mangium are widely used to improve soil fertility and help in carbon sequestration. The Mangium trees planted in Barangay Balete, Sta. Fe, Nueva Vizcaya in 2015 have grown to as high as 15 meters. This endemic species helps in restoring degraded lands and mitigating the effects of climate change.

Another project site also began in Tanay, Rizal, wherein around 3,064 Falcata seedlings were planted in an estimate of 4.60 hectares of land. The project also aims to improve the biodiversity in the area and provide new livelihood opportunities for the locals.

As an offshoot project of the Dr. Lucio C. Tan Legacy Forest Project, the Foundation’s model agroforestry farm in Brgy. Digdig, Carranglan, Nueva Ecija was able to produce an estimate of 32 tons of various vegetable and fruit crops, which have reached various consumers including employees of sister companies throughout the year.

With this initiative, not only does the Foundation engage and train local farmers in responsible and sustainable farming, but also hopes to help the government deal with food security concerns by delivering fresh and healthy farm-to-table produce.

Las-Ud Mangrove Rehabilitation Project

T

he Las-Ud Mangrove Rehabilitation Project in Barangay LasUd, Sta. Cruz, Ilocos Sur continued to prosper, providing

biodiversity and support for marine life.

Barangay records showed that fisherfolk can get three to 10 kilos of fresh catch daily. The 12-foot tall mangroves became a sanctuary for aquatic species such as crabs, clams, and mussels.

When the Bakawan, the local mangrove species reached their full height, they instantly became a tourist attraction for the locals. The community leaders continued to actively promote responsible fishing and ecotourism to protect and sustain the project’s environmental impact.

TYKFI-STA Scholarship Program for Farmers’ Children

S

cholars under the TYK-STA Scholarship Program continued to persevere through their academics despite some of the

educational challenges brought about by the pandemic. The scholarship provides a private school education to deserving and hard-working children belonging to poor farming families.

In conclusion of S.Y. 2020-2021, 25% or 36 scholars excelled with special distinction – 32 with honors and four with high honors. There were also 15 Grade 10 completers and 13 who graduated from High School.

For S.Y. 2021-2022, the program has 11 new Grade 7 scholars and 7 new Grade 8 scholars. Overall, there are 124 continuing scholars from Grades 9 to 12, including one from Grade 5.

College Scholarship Project for Agriculture and Forestry Students

T

he Foundation welcomed three third year and two fourth year scholars taking up Bachelor of Science in Forestry at the

University of the Philippines - Los Baños (UPLB) for S.Y. 2021-2022.

The scholars passed various requirements for the scholarship program, including a panel interview with Foundation officers and UPLB College of Forestry and Natural Resources academic officials.

These scholars are in addition to the six continuing scholars taking Agriculture and Agricultural Engineering course in Nueva Vizcaya State University (NVSU).

The Foundation continues to sponsor students of this scholarship program in support of the agriculture and forestry sector while promoting environmental conscientiousness and responsible stewardship among the youth.

HOPE Caravan: Covid-19 Response

H

eeding the call for immediate relief and assistance to our various sectors affected by the pandemic, the

Foundation, in partnership with MacroAsia Catering Services, Inc. (MACS), distributed food and drink items to a total of seven hospitals, a community parish, an elementary school, and a community of farmers.

The flavoured pastry items and juice drinks donated by MACS provided comfort to the recipients especially to the healthcare frontliners. Top officials of the hospitals received the donations on January 5 and 6, 2021, which were then distributed to the staff, patients, and visitors of the hospital.

A parish in Barangay Holy Spirit in Quezon City which caters to the indigents in the community, a mountain-top elementary school in Kayapa, Nueva Vizcaya, and the farmers and volunteers in the project areas of the Legacy Forest Project in Nueva Ecija also received the same packs.

HOPE Caravan: Typhoon Ulysses Response

O

n January 12, 2021, around 4,000 households who were victims of the Typhoon Ulysses in Marikina City received food items from the Foundation,

in partnership with MacroAsia Catering Services, Inc. (MACS), and bottled drinking water from Grandholdings Investments (SPV-AMC) and Opal Fortfolio Investments, Inc. MACS directly delivered the items in its refrigerated trucks to the five PNB branches in Marikina where the recipients gathered for distribution. Each recipient-family received the ready-to-eat pastry items and bottled water through the assistance of volunteers from the Philippine National Bank (PNB) and the local barangay unit. Community Pantries and Vegetable Distribution

I

n support of the government’s food security campaign, the Foundation joined the wave of community pantries that swept

throughout the nation this year.

In an initiative that started in July 2021, the Foundation sponsored the Philippine Airlines’ (PAL) pantry through the donaton of various crops from the Foundation’s agroforestry farm in Carranglan, Nueva Ecija.

The Foundation’s food donation to PAL’s service personnel such as security guards, janitorial staff, and pilot shuttle service drivers included packs of vegetables and 275 kilogram of premium white rice.

On August 26, 2021, TYKFI extended the project to the residents and Covid-19 patients under the care of Hospicio de San Jose in Manila City by donating 84 kilograms of various crops and 30 boxes of Lola Remedios ® Food Supplement. On December 2, 2021, Eton Properties Philippines, Inc. also donated around 140 kilograms of various crops, 20 bottles of assorted fresh farm-processed products, and 250 kilograms of rice.

Meanwhile, the Foundation also offered the fresh produce of its model agroforestry farm to the service providers and employees of its sister companies stationed in the PNB Financial Center in Pasay City and Allied Bank Center in Makati City at affordable prices.

Covid-19 Response: Rice Distribution for Quarantined Families

T

he Foundation continued its Covid-19 battling efforts by donating 150 sacks of 25-kilogram premium white rice to Sta. Fe, Nueva Vizcaya on

October 15, 2021.

The

local

government

unit

distributed the rice to the marginalized families and patients under quarantine due to an outbreak of Covid-19 in the municipality. This provided support to the affected residents and their close contacts who may be in isolation for a period of time.

Palay Seeds Distribution

I

n response to the continued increase in prices of farm inputs and low palay price upon harvesting, the Foundation continued

the Masaganang Palayan initiative by distributing palay seeds and

fertilizers to farmers in marginalized agricultural communities.

On December 3, 2021, the Foundation distributed five sacks of hybrid or high-yielding palay seeds to a farmers association with members from barangays Comon and Tabueng in Aritao, Nueva Vizcaya. Each of the 10 recipients who owns around one-hectare of farmland expects a yield of around 100 cavans of high quality palay from these seeds. The Foundation also provided fertilizers to maximize yield and upon harvest, will help the farmers bring their produce to the market at a competitive price.

TYKFI-Eton Housing Project

F

amilies of four scholars under the TYKFI-STA Scholarship Program for Farmers’ Children moved in to their new homes

donated by Eton Properties Philippines, Inc. Eton specifically wanted to provide marginalized farming families with newly-constructed concrete homes as part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program.

TYKFI, on the other hand, helped select the recipients from more than 100 scholars of the scholarship program through screening and ocular inspection of their dilapidated houses as well as supervision of the construction of the new houses.

Typhoon Odette Relief Efforts

T

yphoon Rai, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Odette, was a catastrophic tropical cyclone that ravaged through

southern Luzon and large areas of the Visayas and Mindanao in the Philippines in December.

The Foundation, in cooperation with Tanduay Distillers, Inc. and local government units of Bohol and Leyte, immediately sent relief to the victims of the typhoon in different provinces.

The Foundation donated 500 cases of bottled drinking water to Tagbilaran City, Bohol and 150 pieces of cooking ware to Bato, Leyte on December 21 and 30, 2021 respectively.

UE-TYKFI Scholarship Program

W

ith over 1,300 scholars to date, the UE-TYKFI Scholarship Program continued to provide quality undergraduate

education for academically excellent students in partnership with the University of the East since 1998.

For S.Y. 2021-2022, the program has 90 continuing scholars and two grantees – 10 in liberal arts, 30 in accountancy and business administration, 16 in computer studies, 14 in dentistry, one in education, and 21 in engineering.

TYKFI-FLP Legal Scholarship Program

O

n its fifth year, the TYKFI-FLP Legal Scholarship Program prided itself on supporting bright and talented, young

law scholars across the country who are not only committed to espousing the twin philosophies of liberty and prosperity under the rule of law, but also have an equal passion to serve the underserved and the less fortunate.

In partnership with the Foundation for Liberty and Prosperity (FLP) and in cooperation with Philippine Association of Law Schools (PALS), TYKFI welcomed 10 third year and 11 fourth year law students into the roster of scholars for A.Y. 2020-2021 during an awarding ceremony on August 13, 2021. Due to the pandemic, it was only in 2021 that the program recognized the six graduates from batches 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 for their excellent performance.

School Supplies Distribution Project

I

n light of the challenges of distance learning and the risk of learners falling behind in their academics, the Foundation

came to the aid of several adopted schools in Nueva Vizcaya and Ilocos Sur by donating various printing materials and equipment.

Tan Yan Kee Elementary School in Balete, Sta. Fe, Nueva Vizcaya and Macdu Elementary School in Macdu, Kayapa, Nueva Vizcaya each received one monochrome and one colored printer, 17 bottles of ink, and 100 reams of copy paper.

Babayoan, Nagtenga, and Sidaoen Elementary Schools in Sta. Cruz, Ilocos Sur each received one monochrome printer, four colored printer, 46 bottles of ink, and 100 reams of copy paper.

The distribution to each school was accomplished through a partnership with the local government unit of Sta Cruz, Ilocos Sur headed by Hon. Mayor Teresita C. Valle. This donation will enable the schools to have enough supplies to print learner modules for about one school year.

Food Distribution Project

T

o help alleviate the food security concerns of the students and their families in marginalized communities during pandemic,

the annual Food Distribution Project reached seven schools with the donation of sacks of premium white rice to students and teachers alike.

In coordination with the local government of Sta. Fe, Nueva Vizcaya, the Foundation went to four schools located in the most remote areas in the municipality from January to February 2021 and delivered 2,820 kilograms of rice to 282 pupils of Lawed, Buyasyas, Unib, and Cauco Elementary Schools.

Meanwhile, the pupils of Macdu Elementary School and Tan Yan Kee Elementary School each received 25 kilograms of rice and their teachers received 10 kilograms on December 10, 2021. The 142 scholars under the TYKFI-STA Scholarship Program for Farmers’ Children and some of their teachers likewise received 10 kilograms of premium white rice on December 21, 2021.

he Tan Yan Kee Library held its yearly Summer Class via online platforms from

May 4 to July 4, 2021 for participants aged 6 to 12 years old or Grades 1 to 6.

Learning sessions were conducted for 30 student-parent pairs through the social media - WeChat, Viber, and Messenger. The students participated in learning sessions on Chinese short stories, idioms, songs, as well as Tang Dynasty Poem and stories. They also learned new Mandarin words and songs, facts about Chinese festivities, and arts and craft.

The student participants were given tasks and activities and their parents would send back their reaction videos and/ or task accomplishments.

The learning videos on topics discussed are also available in the Facebook account of the Tan Yan Kee Library.

F

or two years now, the mode of learning in the Philippine

education system has shifted to the emergency measure of virtual education or distance learning.

To help address the challenges amidst these extraordinary times, Foundation for Upgrading the Standard of Education (FUSE) continued to respond with its trainings through webinars and assemblies for teachers nationwide.

To gather and enhance its content, FUSE came up with a seven-pronged approach called 7 Ms or Spheres of Teaching-Learning Process. This constitutes and focuses on Matter (content), Mentor (teacher), Mentee (learner), Materials (resources), Methodology (approach and strategies), Measurement (monitoring and evaluating progress and achievement), and Management (structure).

From May 22 to October 30, 2021, several teacher training webinars were conducted for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) teachers in partnership with Filipino Science Hub and Philippine Normal University. The project is both standards-referenced (i,e, inputs) and standardsbased (i.e. outputs).

With these, FUSE is cognizant of the effects of the lockdowns and online classes on students and teachers alike, and finds the opportunity to reach out and provide much needed solutions through the help of its trainers and volunteers.

For 2021, two doctors completed their specialty training abroad: Dr. Kimmie Xander T. Chua finished her two-year clinical fellowship in Hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) Surgery and Liver Transplantation at Hualien Tzu Chi General Hospital and National Taiwan University Hospital in Taiwan.

Dr. Evangelyn Grace M. Matias completed her one-year Transplant Nephrology fellowship training at McMaster University in Canada.

Covid-19 Vaccination Project

S

ince the onset of the pandemic, the Foundation has donated medical and health supplies to hospitals and various

institutions nationwide. In addition, it also hosted a vaccination drive in its field office in Carranglan, Nueva Ecija.

The initiative, in coordination with the Lucio C. Tan Group of Companies, was able to vaccinate 357 employees, partner, and service providers of the Foundation and companies under the LT 64

Group on July 31 and September 25, 2021.

The vaccinees are employees of Allianz-PNB Life, Asia Brewery Inc., LT Group, Inc., MacroAsia Corporation, Philippine Airlines, Philippine National Bank, and University of the East, together with the Foundation’s community partners and Dr. Lucio C. Tan Legacy Forest farmers, staff, and service providers.

This was made possible in partnership with Zuellig Pharma Corporation and volunteers from the Philippine Red Cross and the Philippine National Bank.

Medical Supplies Distribution

I

n light of the surge of cases of Covid-19 around Metro Manila, TYKFI sent medical supplies donations to two hospitals in the

City of Manila and a community parish in Quezon City to provide additional support to the frontliners and indigents alike.

On January 5, 2021, Sta. Ana Hospital and Ospital ng Maynila each received 150 pieces face shield, 150 boxes face mask (50 pieces per box), 15 gallons ethyl alcohol, 15 pieces infrared thermometer, 35 boxes medical gloves (50 pairs per box), and 10 cases of Lola Remedios® Food Supplement.

On May 26, 2021, San Jose Ang Tagapagtanggol Parish in Quezon received five gallons of isopropyl alcohol and five cases of Lola Remedios® Food Supplement.
