Vol. 14 Issue 1 OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF THE TAN YAN KEE FOUNDATION, INC. January-June 2020
TYKFI Aims for Better Food Production for Healthier Filipinos
D
r. Lucio C. Tan, Chairman and President of the Tan Yan Kee Foundation, Inc., roots for a stronger agricultural production program in line with the government’s goal of boosting food security and wellness of all Filipinos.
Philip Sing, the officer in charge of the TYKFI food security project recalls: “As early as five years ago, Dr. Tan already wanted to engage in agro-forestry when he launched the Dr. Lucio Tan Legacy Forest Project in Carranglan, Nueva Ecija in partnership with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). He eyed a farmland in Nueva Ecija where we could plant vegetable crops alongside fruit and forest trees. A man of wisdom and vision, Dr. Tan knew that the good earth will always bring food to everyone’s table, rich or poor.”
LEGACY
Aiming for Masaganang Gulayan at Palayan
Currently, Mr. Sing, who has been with the Foundation for more than 20 years, manages the farms in Nueva Ecija, Nueva Vizcaya, and Palawan which have already yielded tons of various agricultural crops. Mr. Sing said: “We are now in full swing of planting and harvesting various “Bahay Kubo” crops like tomatoes, eggplant, okra, ampalaya, patola, kalabasa as well as pechay, kamote tops and kangkong. We have also included rice as this is the people’s staple food and the Filipino farmer’s major crop. We want to assist rice farmers in getting the highest yield per hectare of their land.” “Late last year Eton Properties Philippines, Inc., a sister company of the Group, partnered with the Foundation to help farmers of Aritao, Nueva Vizcaya produce premium rice under a joint CSR project called Masaganang Palayan. With the donation of hybrid palay seeds and farm inputs, the project saw its bountiful harvest with 214 tons of palay or an estimate of more than 100 tons of rice from around 20 hectares of farm land. The Foundation also helped the farmers sell their produce to the market.”

LEGACY
Encouraging Farmers to Plant in Countryside
“Dr. Tan believes that the LT agroforestry project is in line with the government’s thrust of encouraging people to go back to the countryside and cultivate vacant but productive agricultural lands. He says that we do not need to worry about basic food necessities as we can already produce them here. If we plan and plant ahead, we will always be prepared to feed our people during unforeseen calamities and disasters such as this COVID-19 pandemic. If we produce more, the positive economic returns will naturally follow.”
TYKFI estimates over P1.0 million of savings enjoyed by customers from a production of over 45 tons of fresh vegetables and fruits from the TYKFI model farm.
Total Employee Care thru Low Cost Affordable Food
“Where do the fresh produce of the Legacy Farms go? On the receiving end of the Farm produce are the consuming public in communities we serve. Depending on the volume of the harvests, we have three distribution outlets for our produce: 1) the local market or the nearby markets; 2) corporate buyers who pick up our goods; and 3) employees of the Group.” “Dr. Tan is happy to know we are able to sell fresh and quality vegetables to our employees. Since we sell them at affordable prices, we were always “sold-out” and the employees always looked forward to our weekly market day. This is part of Dr. Tan’s total employee care where his people enjoy extra fringe benefits.” Mr. Sing said that an estimate of more than P1.0 million from around 45 (plus) tons of various vegetable crops produced in the Foundation’s model farm over the last four years were saved by thousands of families reached by this initiative under the Legacy Forest Project. 3
LEGACY
Sustainable Livelihood for the Poor Farmers
“The TYK farms serve as a sustainable source of livelihood for poor farmers and indigenous peoples in the communities we serve. Families of farmers who have worked at the Legacy Forest Project and the agro-forestry farmers have improved their living standards tremendously since 2015. Many of them have constructed or renovated their own permanent houses, acquired motorcycles they use to go to work, sent children to college, started their own small businesses or have brought their own family members to work under the Project.” “Dr. Tan hires professional agriculturists, foresters and skilled farm workers to look after the optimal utilization and protection of the different farms. He also sees to it that the Foundation trains local farmers in the correct way of land preparation, maintenance and nurturing of farms which they can adopt in their own backyard gardens.” 4
LEGACY
Training and Wellness Program for Farmers
“Our workers have benefitted not only through their wages but also through various fringe benefits out of the generosity of Dr. Tan. The Foundation have also extended to farmers regular training modules in farming skills and techniques, work values, and even spiritual development. Through its medical mission project, the Foundation has continued to bring medical specialists to the farm so farmers and their families can enjoy health care benefits like free medicines and free consultations assistance, chiropractor and massage therapy.”
Thanking our Farmers and Food Workers
To honor the unsung heroes of the farm who look after the food security of our people, Dr. Tan said: “In this time of the pandemic, when we are faced with many challenges, I thank our farmers and food workers for their efforts and sacrifices to ensure that each of us will be well and will have food to eat each day. In their honor, let us also start to plant a seed or a tree today and help sustain the environment and feed the future generations of our country for many, many years to come.”

LEGACY
Marilyn Padilla Tiangco, a PNB bank officer who works from home, is a regular buyer of the TYKFI fresh produce.
TYKFI Project Brings Healthy Food to Employees and Livelihood to Farmers Many employees from the different companies and offices of the LT Group need not go to the wet market or the supermarkets to get their fresh fruits and vegetables. Right in the comfort of their homes or offices, they could already order and get their nutritious food from the TYKFI. Since last year, the Foundation already started to bring the fresh produce of Geonature Inc. from the farms in Carranglan, Nueva Ecija and sell to employees at very affordable prices. The pandemic briefly put a stop to the sale of the vegetables in March but resumed about two months later. 6
LEGACY
Most regular customers come from companies in the head offices in Makati, Pasay, and Pasig who either report for work or work from home. Eton Properties Philippines, Inc., Philippine National Bank, and Zebra Holdings, Inc. send weekly e-mail blasts of the TYKFI pricelist of the fresh produce by item to guide employees for their purchases. Individual employees send their orders to the TYKFI team. The ordered items are packed for each employee and delivered to pick up stations in PNB Head office in Pasay, TYKFI office at PNB Makati Centre, and Zebra-Pasig. Those who work from home may opt to have their order delivered by private delivery companies. Many employees, especially the rank and file like security guards and janitors say they have benefitted much from the low prices. Other employees said, “Masarap at mabango ang bigas,” referring to the premium rice harvested from the TYKFI-ETON Masaganang Palayan project. A PNB officer said he continues to support the project because “it gives livelihood to many poor farmers who have been affected by the pandemic.” The list of items which originally included only fruits and vegetables now includes rice and root crops like camote, cassava, and ube as well as potted herbal plants like aloe vera, basil and oregano. n 7

Batangas City despite being one of the farthest barangays to reach in the city. In coordination with Tanduay Distillers, Inc., Himmel Industries, Inc., and LGU headed by Brgy. Chairman Wilfredo Ilagan, they received bags of relief goods and sleeping mats which they said would help sustain their weeks while staying in evacuation and even after they go back to their homes. In the aftermath of the recent calamity, Tanduay Dis-
tillers, Inc. (TDI), Philippine Airlines, and members of the Philippine Airforce joined TYKFI in the clearing operations of ashcovered roads in Talisay, Batangas on January 30, 2020. TYKFI together with partner TDI continued to bring relief to victims of the Taal volcano unrest. On February 4, 2020, present to help the Foundation in distributing the relief goods at San Agustin Chapel were Brgy. Leynes Captain Bailon
Talisay, Batangas D. Caringal and members of the local barangay unit to 356 affected families and residents. Even after a month since the Taal volcano’s destructive eruption, TYKFI together with Philippine National Bank (PNB) and its over 40 Branch Managers and Area Heads from the South Luzon Area, headed to Talisay, Batangas to assemble and distribute “Home
Lian, Batangas 25
Starter Kits” to 897 families from Sitio Tabla and San Isidro from Barangay Poblacion who were staying in the evacuation center in Barangay Tumaway, Talisay, Batangas. Each start-up set contained a cooking pot, ladle, three pieces plates, three pairs of spoon and fork, water pail, dipper, and petroleum jelly. Moreover, Allianz PNB Life Insurance, Inc. donated toothbrushes and ecobags, while Tanduay Distillers, Inc donated cleaning tools. Joanne Malapitan, a beneficiary, expressed her thankfulness for the help given to her and her 80-year-old parents and two elementary age children living in the evacuation center. Alcadia Dinglasan was also very thankful that TYKFI came to their aid despite the distance as she used to be a horse guide but has since been displaced from work. It is the hope of the Foundation that these families will be able to pick up and have some normalcy and start rebuilding their lives once again. n
