Food Bank

Canada’s first-ever food bank was created in Edmonton in 1980, and the local non-profit has been supporting thousands of Edmontonians ever since.

Winter and the holiday season in particular exacerbate the struggles felt with rising costs and stagnant wages. Edmonton’s Food Bank is one of the first streams of non-profits and charities, in general, that see the effects of this. While they were serving around 25,000 people a month in 2021, 2022 saw almost 31,000 a month, with more than 34,000 served in December alone. So far in 2023, the monthly hamper recipients is averaging at 34,500.

“Food, funds, and time not only help us now, over the winter,” says Tamisan Bencz-Knight, their Manager of Strategic Relationships & Partnerships. “The campaign’s success sets the tone for the new year.” Their annual Christmas campaign is meant to sustain the food bank’s resources until the warmer months, as donations often drop off dramatically right after the new year. People are often more willing to give over the holidays.

While their 2023 holiday campaign goals won’t be released until after Remembrance Day, last year’s holiday campaign from November 21– January 6 sought to raise 300,000 kg of food and 3.5 million dollars.

The Christmas Bureau of Edmonton has been providing meals to families in need for over 80 years. “That tradition of neighbour helping neighbour is still what we hold true today,” says Lisa Dayanandan, the Christmas Bureau of Edmonton’s Manager of Partnerships and Engagement.

Their food hamper program is designed to assist anyone who is unable to make a Christmas meal happen. Generally, volunteers pack and deliver packages that include a turkey or a ham, potatoes, vegetables, stuffing, and some chocolates and oranges, but the Christmas Bureau acknowledges that not all families eat a turkey or celebrate Christmas. In this case, individuals with their own festive traditions can opt for a gift card to do their own holiday shopping.

“Our programs are for anyone in need,” says Lisa. “You don’t necessarily have to be living in poverty. A need looks different for everybody.” Last year, they served an estimated 40,000 people and worked hard to achieve their goal of $1.8 million.

You can help them again this holiday season by donating online (christmasbureau.ca/ways-to-help/donate) or in person at various markets around the city. They also partner with the Fort Saskatchewan Correctional Institute to sell wooden toys made through an inmate training workshop.

“When I think about Christmas, I actually get more joy in the giving than the getting,” says Lisa. “And the Christmas Bureau is that intention on a broad scale.”

A warm punch with ginger and cinnamon, the sweetly spiced scents of Christmas.

Serves 10.

Ingredients: 600 ml St-Rémy XO 1200 ml Distilled water 200 ml Gingerbread syrup 100 ml Vanilla syrup 40 dashes Bitters 1 Ginger, sliced 5 Cinnamon sticks Method: Add ingredients to saucepan and mix.

Heat to 30​​°C. For presentation, pour into a punch bowl.

Ladle into tumbler glasses and serve.
