A new tradition begins High school sports are woven into the fabric of our community. They're Friday nights under the lights, packed gyms, early morning tee times, and weekends spent traveling from one game to the next. They're rivalries that span generations and moments that become lifelong memories. That's why we created The Owensboro Times Sports Playbook. We wanted to create a publication that people would look forward to each season — not just another collection of schedules. This first issue is exactly where we wanted to begin: a comprehensive guide to the upcoming season. As The OT Sports Playbook grows, so will our vision, with plans to add more feature content and expanded coverage from across the region. For me, this project has been years in the making. I grew up in a small town where sports were at the center of community life. I played most sports available in my hometown growing up, and they never really had an offseason. If we weren't on a team, we were in a gym or on a field playing anyway. That passion eventually carried into college intramurals and, ultimately, into journalism. My career began covering high school sports in my hometown before moving to Murray State athletics, and when Owensboro Times launched, I had the opportunity to build our sports department from the ground up. I've long believed local athletes deserve to be celebrated. That vision led to our annual Sports Awards, which celebrated its third year last spring, and now to the launch of The OT Sports Playbook. Every tradition starts somewhere. We hope this magazine becomes a trusted resource you'll keep nearby throughout the season, and that each year it grows into something even more valuable for athletes, parents, coaches, and fans alike. Thank you for supporting local sports, local schools, and local journalism. We hope you enjoy the inaugural edition of The OT Sports Playbook, and we look forward to growing it together in the years ahead.

fall 2026 volleyball preview
Familiar faces, new challengers set stage for another competitive season Few sports in the 3rd Region feature as much year-to-year parity as volleyball, and 2026 looks no different. Apollo enters the season as the team to beat after capturing last year's 3rd Region championship and reaching the second round of the state tournament. But the E-Gals won't have an easy path to repeating. Daviess County believes it has the depth to contend for a region title, Owensboro returns much of its offensive production with another year under head coach Mitchell Johnson, Owensboro Catholic begins a new era under first-year coach Eric Hagan, and Trinity continues building a young roster that hopes to make noise by postseason play. Veteran leadership is a common theme throughout the county. Several teams return experienced senior classes, while others will rely on emerging underclassmen to fill key roles. The result should be another season of competitive district races, intense crosstown matchups, and a crowded field of region contenders.
Apollo
The defending 3rd Region champions return most of the roster that advanced to the second round of the KHSAA State Tournament, giving the E-Gals plenty of confidence entering 2026. Senior Avery Gray, the team's leading attacker from a year ago, headlines a veteran lineup that also includes Keelan Wettstain, Savannah Denson, Ali Lawson, Addy Kirby, Maddi Roberts,
Jessie Pate, and Lyla Fortener. Kinsley Jackson returns after missing time with an injury, while Sophia Mason is expected to provide versatility across multiple positions. With last year's success heightened expectations.
comes
"We are coming into this season looking to defend our district and region titles," head coach Mary Howard said. "We will have the target on our back from the start this season and will have to bring our A-game every night."
Daviess County After narrowly missing a trip to the 3rd Region Tournament last season, Daviess County believes the foundation has been laid for a breakthrough year. The Lady Panthers spent the offseason in the weight room, at open gyms, and competing at team camp at Middle Tennessee State, experiences head coach Tyla Bailey believes have accelerated the team's development. A deep senior class featuring Maya Pollard, Maddie Chinn, Molly Baughman, Jenna Lawson, Sarah Watson, Lexi Jones, and Haylee Clark provides the team's backbone. Juniors Kyndal Murphy, Stella Roberts, Kallie Stanley, and Reese Whiteside add experience, while sophomore Taylor Powers is expected to contribute. "We expect to be a top contender for district and region championship titles," Bailey said. "We also want to provide

crowd-welcoming
Owensboro
The Lady Devils enter year two under head coach Mitchell Johnson looking to build on the progress made during his first season. Owensboro returns the bulk of its offensive production from last year's team, including senior setter Anna Travis, whose all-around contributions included 572 assists, 245 digs, 90 blocks, 57 kills, and 49 service aces. Junior Ayrish Barksdale also returns after leading the Lady Devils with 313 kills. With another offseason together and an experienced core back in place, Owensboro hopes that continuity translates into a return to postseason contention after last year's district tournament loss to Apollo.
Owensboro Catholic
A new coach and a younger roster signal the beginning of a new chapter for the Lady Aces. Eric Hagan, in his first year at the helm for the Lady Aces, inherits a team that graduated more than 80 percent of its offensive production, but he has been encouraged by the commitment shown throughout the offseason. Seniors Peyton Arnold and Emma Castlen provide leadership, while Riley Owens, Quinn Best, and Emmy Roberts bring valuable experience. A talented group of younger players — including Bella Brey, Aubrey Crow, Marilla Kanipe, and Maddie Murphy — will be counted on to grow quickly. "When I was introduced, our goal was to win the 3rd Region, and that hasn't changed," Hagan said. "We know that
it's going to be a tough task. The 9th District is very competitive, but our goal is to win the 3rd Region."
Trinity Trinity continues its rebuilding process with one of the area's youngest rosters, but the Lady Raiders believe that youth could become a strength as the season progresses. Ella McManaway is the lone senior, while juniors Ella Morris and Camryn Preston lead an emerging group that also includes Naveah Mills and Gracie Ballard. Nina McDaniel is expected to take over as the team's varsity setter, with Maggie Payne, Olivia Starks, Evelyn Roby, and Lydia Aud as other players head coach Adam Huff expects to make an impact. "We need to be our best at the end of the regular season to be ready to compete for a district title and advance in the region tournaments," Huff said. "We are still rebuilding the program, but look forward to taking the next step this season and getting back to where we are accustomed to."
A QUI C K L O O K Apollo returns most of the roster from last year’s 3rd Region championship team. Daviess County returns seven seniors entering the 2026 season. Owensboro brings back its top two offensive producers in Anna Travis and Ayrish Barksdale. Owensboro Catholic has a new head coach in Eric Hagan following a major roster turnover. Owensboro Catholic brings back nearly its entire core from a 14-win campaign. Apollo continues building momentum under second-year head coach Kevin Peveler. While each program enters the season from a different position, all four share the same objective — playing their best soccer when the postseason arrives.
"We have multiple new players or players returning from two seasons ago that are going to get an opportunity to challenge for playing time," Peveler said. "The expectation is to improve on last year's win total, play a better attacking style game, and continue to build a program that will eventually challenge at the district and region level."

fall 2026 boys’ golf preview
Experience, youth collide as local teams chase postseason success Every golf season presents a different challenge, and this year's local landscape features a little bit of everything.
The Eagles finished seventh at the region
Owensboro Catholic enters 2026 as the defending Region 2 champion with an experienced roster aiming for another deep postseason run. Apollo returns its entire starting lineup and hopes to climb the region standings, while Daviess County and Owensboro rely on talented younger golfers to fill key roles. Trinity also brings back a veteran group looking to build on previous experience.
"We finished seventh at region last
Like many sports, golf's postseason often comes down to steady improvement over the course of the fall. Whether led by seasoned veterans or emerging underclassmen, each local program believes it has the pieces to make noise when tournament season arrives.
Apollo Apollo returns its entire starting five from last season, giving the Eagles one of the area's most experienced lineups. Head coach David Lyons has been encouraged by the team's offseason progress and says competition throughout the roster has pushed everyone to improve. Seniors Brady Robbins and McCoy Taylor, along with junior Beau Brock, provide veteran leadership, while Mason Hammonds, Hayden Edge, and Blake Taylor continue to develop and challenge for key spots.

Daviess County Daviess County enters the season with a fresh look after graduating much of last year's postseason lineup. Collin Reynolds is the lone returning player from last year's playoff team, but the Panthers have several young golfers ready to step into larger roles. Lucas Tincher and Mason Shivley have enjoyed strong summers on the GO Junior Golf Series, while Colten Manley and Kamden Wagner have also impressed head coach Lars King. Carter Gabbert is another player King believes could make an impact. While much of the roster is new, the expectations remain the same. "I always want to be competitive in the postseason," King said. "Even though we are reloading almost the entire roster, I think the season is a success if we are able to see improvement from all the players on the team."

Let us know about your college signings Signing to compete in college is one of the biggest milestones in a student-athlete’s career, and Owensboro Times wants to help celebrate those moments. If you or someone you know has an upcoming college signing ceremony, we’d love to hear about it. We’ll continue covering official college signings as we’ve done from day one. While we’ve traditionally not published full stories on verbal commitments — because plans can change — we know those announcements are still exciting. Beginning this year, we’ll also recognize college commitments on our social media platforms, while continuing to reserve full stories for official signings. Our goal is to recognize every local athlete who signs to compete at the collegiate level. If we’re able to attend the signing ceremony, we’ll be there. If scheduling conflicts prevent us from attending, we’ll still work to feature the athlete through submitted photos and a short interview. If you know of an upcoming signing, please email sports@owensborotimes.com as early as possible with the athlete’s name, school, date, time, and location of the ceremony. The more notice we have, the better opportunity we have to ensure every local student-athlete receives the recognition they deserve.

fall 2026 girls’ golf preview
Defending champions, emerging talent headline another promising season The local girls' golf landscape features a blend of championship expectations and programs continuing to build for the future. Daviess County enters the season as the four-time defending 3rd Region champion after another top-four finish at the state tournament, while Owensboro Catholic begins a new era under first-year head coach Nick Settles. Owensboro hopes to continue the progress it made late last season, Apollo focuses on providing a strong foundation for a small but dedicated roster, and Trinity continues to steadily grow its young program. Whether chasing another region title or laying the groundwork for future success, every local team enters the fall with opportunities to build confidence and momentum throughout the season.
Apollo Apollo enters the season with a small roster, but head coach Emily Lyons is focused on making the experience meaningful for every golfer. Now in her second season as head coach, Lyons spent much of the summer assisting with the GO Junior Golf Series, giving her additional opportunities to work with area golfers and reinforce the expectations she brings to the program. Senior Caitlyn Cecil is the E-gals' lone varsity golfer, while two additional players are competing at the junior varsity level. After coaching Cecil for the
past three years, Lyons believes enjoying the game remains the foundation for success. "That's the first thing that matters. At the end of the day, golf is golf," Lyons said. "I want her to be able to look back and say that she had a good coaching experience and a great high school sporting experience. Golf is such a mental game, so keeping that positive is really what we are working on."
Daviess County Daviess County begins the season with lofty expectations despite fielding one of its youngest teams in recent years. The Lady Panthers are coming off their fourth straight 3rd Region championship and a fourth-place finish at the KHSAA state tournament. Although they graduated three seniors, Briley Billingsley and Kennedi Minton return to lead the team, while Ayla Roberts and Addelyn Yager gained valuable experience this summer on the GO Junior Golf Series. Head coach Jonas Billingsley knows this year's team will look different, but the program's goals haven't changed. "We are going to be a very young team with unexpected talent," Billingsley said. "A fifth consecutive region title will be our goal. I'm excited to see some new faces and hopefully help some young Lady Panthers fall in love with the game of golf."

Owensboro returns an experienced nucleus as the Lady Devils look to continue the progress made during last season. Head coach Kasey Bryann leads the way after qualifying for the state tournament last year, while Olive Harrison provides additional veteran leadership. Freshman Eva Carter, who competed with the junior varsity team while still in middle school, and sophomore Haley Edge round out a young but promising lineup. Bryann believes last year's growth has positioned the program to keep moving forward. "Last season, one of the things the girls were really proud of was taking a team of four players to the region tournament," Bryann said. "We hope to continue improving and build upon the growth from the end of last season."

Trinity Trinity continues to focus on building its girls' golf program one season at a time. With three golfers on this year's roster, head coach Magan Hayden sees plenty of opportunity for individual growth both on and off the course. "We're excited about where our girls' golf

Hayden
said. "My biggest goal is to help these girls grow not only as golfers, but as young women. I'm looking forward to watching them gain confidence, improve throughout the season, and enjoy the experience together."
Owensboro Catholic enters the season under new leadership as Nick Settles takes over as head coach, with his brother Tim Settles serving as assistant coach. The coaching staff has spent the offseason establishing expectations, building team chemistry, and helping players improve their consistency and course management. Returning golfers Catherine Ray, Betsy Evans, Isabella Hodgkins, and Adalyn Settles headline the roster, while Ayla Montgomery is among the program's emerging contributors. A strong group of middle school golfers also gives the Lady Aces optimism for the future.

fall 2026 boys’ cross country preview
region powers set the pace entering another competitive season Championship expectations are nothing new for local boys' cross country programs, and several teams enter 2026 believing they have the talent to contend deep into the postseason. Apollo returns as the defending Class 3A region champion after an impressive 2025 campaign, while Daviess County looks to close the narrow gap that separated the Panthers from a 3A region title last fall. Owensboro continues building its program under Griffin Kelley, and Owensboro Catholic hopes another year of development under Willie Polio leads to a breakthrough season. Trinity, meanwhile, continues emphasizing consistency as it develops its program.
Apollo Apollo enters the season looking to defend its 3A region championship with a roster that blends experienced runners and promising newcomers. Head coach Daniel Southard has been encouraged by the team's offseason, noting that several athletes who joined during track season have embraced cross country while returning runners have recommitted themselves to consistent training and leadership. The Eagles believe that combination of experience and depth can keep them among the region's elite as they look to defend last year's title. Southard believes that mindset will be the key to reaching the Eagles' lofty expectations.
"We want to win the region championship and make a statement at the state meet," Southard said. "We understand that reaching those goals will come from being consistent, trusting the process and competing for one another every day."
Daviess County After finishing just behind Apollo at last year's 3A region meet, Daviess County returns one of the area's deepest and most experienced lineups. Judson Redfern, Camryn Edge, Joe Edge, Landon Thompson, Jordan Norris, and Jonah Murphy headline the Panthers' returning group, while Alex Allen and Gage Calloway are among the runners pushing for varsity opportunities. Head coach James Loi expects a competitive battle for the team's final scoring spot throughout the season. That internal competition has become one of the program's biggest strengths, with runners pushing each other every day in practice. For Loi, preparation begins long before the postseason. "My goals and expectations are that we go into every meet competing like it is the state meet," he said. "If we do that, our results will be what we want."

Devils, while several varsity runners are expected to take on larger leadership roles as they help mentor the program's younger athletes. Head coach Griffin Kelley has been encouraged by the team's offseason and is eager to see the full roster come together once competition begins. Kelley believes the program continues to establish the type of culture that will allow the Red Devils to compete while developing the next generation of runners. "Our goal is to continue building a strong culture within the program while competing at a high level," Kelley said. "If we stay healthy, stay consistent with our training, and continue to buy into the process, we believe this group can have a successful season."
Owensboro Catholic Owensboro Catholic enters Willie Polio's second season as boys' head coach with optimism after a productive offseason. Seniors Owen Brey, JW Wathen, and Simon Thompson form the team's experienced core, while sophomores John Pfeifer and Joe Clark continue to develop into key contributors. Polio believes increased mileage and more quality training will translate into stronger performances throughout the season. With a veteran front of the lineup and younger runners continuing to improve, the Aces believe they have the depth to take a significant step forward this fall in Class 1A. "I think we can make a significant jump this season both in individual
performances and as a team," Polio said. "I think we can have multiple all-state performances coming from our seniors and possibly a top-five team finish at state."
Trinity Trinity enters the season with one of its youngest rosters in recent years, but head coach Travis Roby believes the Raiders have embraced the challenge. Several runners have put together a strong offseason, and Roby has been impressed with the team's work ethic and willingness to improve each day. "We're a young team, but that's what makes this group exciting," Roby said. "We've got several runners who have been putting in the work all summer, and they're hungry to make a name for themselves. If they continue to trust the process and keep improving, I think we'll see some great things from them this season."

fall 2026 girls’ cross country preview
Championship aspirations fuel another exciting season on the trails The local girls' cross country season features no shortage of championship expectations. Owensboro Catholic enters the fall after finishing as Class 1A state runner-up, while Daviess County looks to extend one of Kentucky's most impressive dynasties with a 20th consecutive Class 3A region championship. Also in Class 3A, Apollo believes it has the young talent to challenge DC to end the streak, and Owensboro continues building toward a return to the state meet as a team. Although each program enters the season from a different position, all four share a common goal — peaking when the postseason arrives. With experienced leaders, talented underclassmen, and several runners already proven on the region and state stage, another competitive fall is expected across Western Kentucky.
Apollo Apollo returns one of its youngest yet most talented teams in recent memory after finishing runner-up at last year's region meet. Head coach Charlie Shoulta has been encouraged by both the team's numbers and commitment throughout the offseason, calling it one of the program's strongest summers in years. Sophomore Avery Boarman returns alongside three other runners from last
year's region squad, while Addy Alvey, MaKaylee
Denton,
Kathleen
Klokke,
Lydia Martin, Lola Falloway, Stella Clark, and eighth-grader Lily Beth Shoulta give the Eagles impressive depth despite their youth. Shoulta

"We're certainly excited about this season, and I firmly believe this group has the ability to bring home Apollo's first-ever girls region cross country championship," Shoulta said. "At the same time, every athlete on this roster is a sophomore or younger. We want to build this program into one that is a power on the state level."
Daviess County Daviess County enters its second season under head coach Les Orlow with a younger roster but a tradition of success few programs can match. The Lady Panthers have captured 19 consecutive region championships and will be looking to make it 20 this fall despite graduating multiple seniors. Kadota McCaslin is the team's lone senior, and she is joined by juniors Kloee Gaynor and Rylee Emmick and sophomore Anna King. Lily Kurz is another young runner expected to make an impact.

"We hope to qualify for the state meet again this season," Orlow said. "Apollo is the top team in our region this season, and it will be tough to beat them. Coach Shoulta at Apollo always does a great job."
Owensboro Owensboro hopes to turn a growing roster into postseason success after narrowly missing a team berth to the state meet last season. The Lady Devils finished seventh at the region meet in 2025 but did have one individual qualify for the state championships. Head coach Matt Morris has been pleased with the program's offseason, particularly the increase in participation. Co-captains Addi Johnson and Fatima

Osborne, sophomores Natalie Atherton and Scarlett Isenbarger, and a talented freshman class provide depth throughout the lineup. Head coach Jacob Reid believes this year's roster is among the deepest the program has assembled. "It's the biggest group we've had so far, and there are a lot of fast girls in the mix," Reid said. "Most importantly, I want these girls to have fun and continue improving. As a team, we'd like to perform well at region and state. We've won region the last three years and hope to defend our title there."
Landero Luna lead the team, while Maleeyah Voyles, Laveenya Siddons, and Emsersyn Wood are among the runners expected to take on larger roles this season. "Our goal this season will be to return to the state meet as a team after missing out in 2025," Morris said. "The girls have committed to that goal and are consistently working to make sure they are running on Halloween weekend in Lexington."
