When we went on vacation this summer, we took a lot of our food down with us. While packing, I found I didn’t own a tote giving me enough space for all of our boxed goods. I recently came across some shopping bags at Tuesday Morning, and I was so excited. They are very large and can be used for so much — grocery items, gifts for birthdays, holidays or showers, beach items, sports gear, etc. I have used mine for so much already!

How do you balance family life and being a family-owned hometown pharmacy?

8 HENDERSON FAMILY October // November 2022

Tell us a little about yourself (Family, kids, pets, etc)

I worked for them for over a decade learning the ends and outs and even the business aspects of how to operate a successful business. Somewhere in that time my passion grew for the job, and I decided this was what I was called to do and set out on the educational journey it took to make this a reality.

If you like to work you don’t mind it. I have always given 110% and made all of my previous jobs my own, so this is just the same except I don’t have to ask for permission to do what I feel is right.

What advice would you give to someone interested in becoming a pharmacist? Do it! Make sure your heart is in patient care and don’t look back. HF

Did you always know you wanted to be a pharmacist?

This is always a struggle with any business owner. Working many hours for corporations, I felt like I was missing out on too much so I made the leap to make it better. In doing so, you will see my children in the store periodically. Any of my late night runs to and from the pharmacy to take care of an urgent care/ emergency room discharge, you will see them with me. Make the business a family affair, and you can blur the lines some to make a new normal and it’s no longer all work, it’s family time as well.

No. I have always loved animals and was set on being a veterinarian since I was a child. I was a waiter at a restaurant for my first job, and a pharmacist couple (Rick and Ginny Clements) were regulars and eventually offered me a job in the pharmacy.

What do you enjoy most about what you do? What is most challenging as a pharmacist?

What is it like working and running your own pharmacy?

My family originates from Henderson and this has always been home no matter where we have lived. We knew that once all our education was finished this was where we wanted to call home. My wife, Brittany Butler, and I have been married for 10 years and have 6 children together and are expecting our 7th in February. (Carter 12, Aurora 9, Athena 8, Azalea 6, Caspian 4, Cassius 2). We have 2 goldendoodles, 2 cats and 2 guinea pigs that just had their first litter of 3. We are a deep rooted Catholic family and love that we can send our children to Holy Name School. Our children are the “Why” in everything we do. We work hard and teach them that hard work does pay off with the right attitude. I had very humble beginnings and climbed to the top on the principles that I teach my children. Our goal in life is to raise a close family that not only take care of each other but helps others as well. I have always been called to serve and to help those in need, and I felt like being a Pharmacist and opening my own business was the best way to accomplish that.

Chris Butler

The most challenging part has to be staying abreast with all the clinical knowledge. We are constantly learning, innovating and challenging each other to push the boundaries of what has been the status quo here for so long. It takes an enormous amount of time and effort but the level of care we provide will always be worth it.

Where did the idea originate from to offering additional services outside of pharmaceuticals to your storefront? (Home decor, gifts, ice cream shop, etc).

My wife actually had the idea, and as we were renovating the old Frank G Schmitt building, we noticed we had WAY more room than we needed and we could offer something different here. The idea was to bring back quality care that was once the pillar in pharmacy, and in doing so, led us to just bringing the fashioned feel of a pharmacy as well. We have many stop in and reminisce with our old photos of the town or their experiences here in the store with Hazel.

I love the fact that I get to work around like minded individuals and take care of people in their times of need. It is very rewarding when people know that you are the one that they can call on, and you will always show up to assist in any way you can to make a situation better. Being an owner, I can open my store any time I need to make sure my patients are taken care of. By doing this, it will bring patient care to an entirely different level than Henderson has ever seen. This is the way pharmacy should be, and others are taking notice and it will shape the way patients in Henderson receive care.

Are you hosting a spooky movie night for your kids and their friends? Since they are likely already getting overloaded with sugary candy when they go trick-ortreating, we created a fun snack board with healthier (but still tasty) alternatives to help balance things out! These are all simple to make and can be thrown together fairly quickly. The list below explains how to create some of the different elements, but feel free to add your own healthy snacks (including fruit and veggie sticks) to the mix. Adding candy eyes can basically turn any snack into an “on-theme” treat!

OPENING THEIR DOORS

Walking through the store, influences of Stanley stand out. Copies of old editions of the Henderson Gleaner are for sale along with soap left over from Hotel Soaper. Coffee tins, velvet paintings and old VHS movies are on display against the teal painted walls. If you’re in the market for an embalming machine from the 1930’s, you’re in luck.

A favorite of Ford’s? An antique cooling table. “It unfolds so the undertaker can take it into the house where he would display the body and they would put these giant ice blocks underneath them to keep the body cold for display,” said Ford.

The store plans on hosting pop-up events and markets during the holiday season. The two also feature companies that create handmade cards and jewelry. Elzy even designs earrings made from green uranium glass that glows under a black light; another endeavor they think would make their grandmother proud.

The two credit their grandmother, Anna Jane Stanley, also known as “Nana” for showing them the importance of spending time together. “We’ve always been a thrifty family growing up,” said Elzy. “Our nana would take us on the weekends. I remember holding the newspaper in the passenger seat trying to find addresses and signs, and we would get donuts from Golden Glaze.” Those weekend adventures to garage sales and antiquing became a treasure hunt. The kids searched for toys, while Stanley kept an eye out for jewelry and glassware. “She picked up what caught her eye—what looked interesting,” said Elzy. “She had a good sense of what was something—certain items like silver and gold and coins.” It was that keen eye that Ford believes the two inherited from their grandmother, along with Stanley’s business sense. “She had an eye for stuff people loved,” said Kyla Ford. “But she told me do not open a restaurant.”

Mimicking her grandmother’s entrepreneurial spirit, Jasmine worked not only in graphic design but for a tax office. Kyla worked in emergency dispatch and at USI before stepping away to pursue Corkscrew full-time. After a Facebook conversation, the cousins decided in July

former restaurant: Corkscrew Deli. Stanley worked at the deli before buying the business and was a fixture of the restaurant for close to two decades before she sold it. “It very much consumed her life, “ said Elzy. “She was a single mother. Raising kids and running a business— it’s hard, hard work. It was swimming upstream as she described it. She loved it and loved her customers.”

You can find Corkscrew Curiosites at 111 N. Main Street in downtown Henderson. Opened Tuesday - Saturday from 10am - 5pm, they are ready to help you with all your vintage, antique, oddities and handmade needs. HF

The cousins’ love of vintage finds dates back to when they were little girls growing up in Henderson. “We’ve all been pretty close,’’ said Jasmine Elzy. “Kyla and I are very similar in our interests in vintage and weird things. We are basically clones of each other.”

“We are reusing things people would look over and showing them what it can look like in a modern time,” said Elzy. As the two sell items, their goal is to source them ethically. “Stay accessible to everyone who walks through the door,” said Ford. “We want to have something everyone can buy. Not just people investing in their collection. We love the cute, kitschy bright antiques.”

The pandemic motivated both Jasmine and Kyla to make the jump to become full-time business owners. “Working for ourselves is more fulfilling,” said Elzy. “It brings more joy to our lives. By the fall of 2020, the two had a space to sell their antiques and vintage products at The Elms Consignments.

Taylor was born and raised in Henderson, and she always knew she was called to serve others. “In high school, I wanted to join the Air Force and be a flight nurse. That was my goal. I wanted to have a lifelong career. I didn’t want children or to be married. I wanted to literally be in and out of the United States.” However, her plans changed when she gave birth to her first child and had to re-evaluate what she wanted to do. “I am so sorry. He doesn’t have any vision at all.” Words no parent is ever prepared to hear, Taylor Heady and her husband, Gavin, were given their son, Levi’s, diagnosis of optic nerve hypoplasia when he was only six-months-old. It is a rare but leading condition in childhood blindness. They were told if Levi does have vision it is maybe light perception. Taylor explained, “In the first trimester, your optic nerves form. His did not. The circumference of a straw is what your normal optic nerves look like and his are about string size, so that gives you a comparison.” Although their journey has been hard and brought them many challenges and obstacles, it has led Taylor down a path she never imagined.

THE DREAM

A path bringing joy and serving in a way she never dreamed, and this is only the beginning.

COMMUNITY

is where she was being called. A close family friend, whose father was a sheriff’s deputy, suffered a heart attack in the line of duty while talking a lady down from a suicide attempt. This was another tug at her heart that she wanted to do this kind of work. She had the same aspect of wanting to serve others.

And she thought, “I need an art studio that makes that happen for other kids like LastLevi!”year, Taylor and her husband talked about renovating their attic and

“Levi is a sensory kid,” Taylor said. “Sensory art is essentially what helps him to get better and more tolerable of different textures. It doesn’t seem like such a chore or therapy because kids think they are just playing when really kids are getting used to these textures without them comprehending that’s what they are doing. For example, there might be a child who doesn’t like the texture of mashed potatoes but will play with play-doh.”

turning it into an art studio. She even made a Facebook post asking if there was anyone interested in art classes if they were to redo their attic. She had a ton of comments. Although they eventually completed their attic and turned it into their family hang out/office, their renovations were put on hold when the December 2021 tornado hit Western

at the height of COVID, and Taylor was working 80+ hours a week. She knew very quickly it was not in the cards for her to stay on as a sheriff to care for her son. “I worked for the first female sheriff in Indiana. That was amazing to me. She was phenomenal. I learned a lot from her. I stayed on with reserves up until about six months ago and then turned everything in. That is when I really decided I am done.”

A WINDOW OPPORTUNITYOF

Taylor had been babysitting some friend’s kids at her house, and the kids were always painting and doing crafts and sidewalk chalk. Taylor explained the moment the idea to open an arts and crafts studio came to light. “I was watching the neighborhood kids - what they say are neurotypical, so no different abilities - and watching the kids interact with Levi and how it was second nature to them. And I thought, a few months ago they didn’t know how. They would come in and yell at him saying hi thinking he couldn’t hear. Once they got acclimated with Levi, they understood he was like every other kid but there are certain things that needed to be done.”

She offers drop-in sessions, but they are sessions that are based on life skills. For example, they have offered a junior makeup artist, junior gardener, and a junior cake decorating class. They have a junior tattoo artist class coming up with an entire crew coming over from Evansville to lead the class.Monthly memberships are available. Children ages 2-5 is $65 and ages 6+ is $85 per month. This fee includes all supplies, crafts and a snack. Drop-in sessions can be found on her Facebook page with a link to sign-up. Most classes offer 10-12 spots. Donations and sponsorships are always welcome,Althoughtoo.

TaylorKentucky.helped with search and rescue all week and then ended up helping people find their belongings before more rain came. The time they got around to completing their attic, Taylor felt they needed a different space. She initially had no intentions of opening an art studio anytime soon but, “God just kept opening doors,” expressed the determined mother.

SHINING LIGHT ON A NEW PURPOSE

Taylor explains how she has structure but yet doesn’t. Every week there is a common theme among all of her classes,

“It’s a place where the football kid can come do stuff with the kid who likes to sit in the corner and read.” These are the connections Taylor is wanting to bring to the surface through her studio. It is more than an arts and crafts studio for her. It is bringing kids of different abilities and interests together. Kids have a choice when they come to The Colorwheel Kids. Taylor lets them go play, and then when they want to come and try something out they can. Those on the spectrum may just go to the calm down or sensory space and not even participate in the art activity for that day. She lets them make it their choice to migrate into the studio and see what this art thing is about. “Behind this door, this is the one space you don’t have to make your child fit the mold. This can be an hour of them being them!”

CLASS OFFERINGS

come because they do other things besides art. For example, one night they made painted foam airplanes and used bedazzled glitter. They do a pinewood derby. “It’s not just one interest,” Taylor explained.

Taylor comes from a family of artists, she says, “I enjoy having guest artists. I am here to participate with them and DIY the heck out of some stuff.”

THE KEEPSCOLORWHEELONROLLING

Taylor is excited to continue to see her studio and vision grow. When she opened, she thought she might have 1520 kids interested. Currently, she has 48 monthly memberships and 1,200 likes on Facebook. “That is 1,200 more that didn’t comprehend the different abilities.” It is so important to her to bring awareness to all different abilities and how beneficial it is to co-mingle for kids. The studio was recently asked to participate in the Wendell Foster Expo in TheyOwensboro.arealsooffering special adult drop-ins now. Parent’s nights. “We have a DIY cornhole board coming up. Winner takes all. The group decides how much they want to put in. Tacoholics is bringing the ChimiTruck, too.” She wants everyone to know that the studio is versatile and not

The Colorwheel Kids opened its door in May 2022, offering an Open House with its first class being held on Monday, June 6. “It’s been a learning experience with what works and what doesn’t. This is an arts and crafts studio where we do lots of handson things, especially those with autism, where kids can co-mingle. It doesn’t matter what you look like, who you are or what your background is. It helps make things seem like second nature with the different abilities.”Alot of times, kids gather when they have common interests, but here Taylor encourages kids who don’t even like art to

18 HENDERSON FAMILY October // November 2022 COMMUNITY

Taylor told of the first moment she experienced her hope for the studio playing out. There was a student who attends regularly who is nonverbal but makes noises. One night, a new little girl attended a class. The little girl sitting next to her tapped her shoulder and said, “It’s okay. He calms down. That’s just normal.” Taylor said she had to go into her office and try not to cry. The retired deputy said, “It was like when the bulletproof vest came off, it was okay to cry over everything under the sun.” If Taylor has made that one difference, it is enough for her.

but she wants it to be what the kids make it. Having flexibility makes it more fun for kids of all abilities. One week, her classes focused on pointillism. The older group did an actual project, the intermediate group did a pointillism pond - a group projectwhere they used blue paint and cotton balls. The little group had water cans and Taylor made rainbow lines. The little ones had to fingerpaint dots.

“I wanted to live with a purpose, and this studio had a purpose. We are all artists, but we all have different abilities!”

But, what’s next? After hearing from parents in Madisonville, Hopkinsville and even as far as Crittenden County interested in what Taylor’s studio was providing, Taylor and Gavin have decided to take it to the next level. They are currently looking to purchase a school bus to offer a “color-onwheels” mobile bus. Taylor’s husband is a project manager for a restoration company, so he is very handy. They are going to renovate and make a mobile bus that visits different locations one weekend a month. However, this will take money to make this goal happen. Taylor has a GoFundMe, but she doesn’t feel like many yet comprehend the idea of the purpose of her studio and just see them as an arts and crafts studio. The excited studio owner said, “There is so much more that goes on here. It’s almost like a Therementorship.”isanArts for All program in Kentucky who plans to come down in September for them to potentially receive a grant from. They also received a grant

The possibilities are endless if they can purchase a bus to renovate. Taylor says she could take it to field day at the schools, TriFest and surrounding fairs and do walk-up crafts. When she thinks about what she wants the bus to be - wild and crazy! “I want the kids who are part of the studio to have a part in doing it. I want people to see it from a mile away, look into it and learn more about the different abilities!”

just for little kids. They can offer birthday parties, baby showers, etc.

MAKING A LARGER IMPACT

“I was heartbroken when I left the sheriff’s department. I’ve always felt that God put me here for a reason. I’m not here to just live my life. I am here to live a life to serve others in some aspect. I felt that was my last shot. I felt like I almost let that down. I didn’t know how I was going to make an impact any larger than what I was already doing. But once I started to piece together and look at talents of my own to serve in a different aspect, it made the

Her previous experience has helped her in this new studio. For example, law enforcement helps within her studio when reading body language. There was a little boy who is bipolar who attends her studio. She could tell one evening he was going to have an episode by his body language. She was able to get him to the calm down room beforehand, and he told her he is thankful he has a place to go.

WOMEN HELPING WOMEN

COMMUNITY

Written by Amanda Waggener

The military has come a long way regarding opportunities offered to women and minorities, but in 1973 the options were few for Ramona; or so she thought. Early into her career at Keesler Air Force Base in Mississippi, Ramona refused to settle for only the jobs primarily set aside for women. While on casual status there, she had a runner come to her requesting that she report to the DA. “I grew up watching Perry Mason. I thought it meant District Attorney,” she giggled, “I thought, oh my gosh, I’m in

CHANGE OF PLANS

Having an accomplished military career complete with many “firsts” was never in the original plans for Henderson native, Ramona Turner. “My father served in the Korean War and was shot. In my eyes, as a little girl, Uncle Sam shot my daddy. “I didn’t want anything to do with military,” says the poised lady, sitting with perfect posture in her downtown Henderson home. However, the plans she had made for herself to become a special education teacher changed after she graduated high school in 1973. “There wasn’t any money at that time. I didn’t know about scholarships or how to apply.” Being the tenacious person she is, she couldn’t let that roadblock stop her from moving forward. She began to explore other options, which landed her in a field she never dreamed she’d be in.

“This man who worked with my father had a daughter who had just joined the Air Force.” This had until this point been a path that Ramona had not considered, given the trauma she felt as a child when her father was injured while serving in the army during the war. “Daddy mentioned to me that if I wanted to talk to him that would be fine, but only for the Air Force or the Navy. He did not want me near the Army or Marines.” She found another path to her college dream once she discovered that she could serve in the military for 4 years, going to school while she was there. This seemed like the solution to her problem, and she signed up. Undecided on which branch to join, she took the exam for both the Air Force and the Navy. “I did better on the Navy one, but the Air Force treated me better so that’s where I went,” admitted Turner. Originally thinking she would only be in for 4 years and would likely be assigned to an administrative or nursing duty because she was female, she had the lowest of expectations.

trouble!” However, for military purposes, DA stands for Director of Administration. In that DA’s office, Ramona was greeted by a “female zebra” (referring to the stripes on her uniform). The DA’s boss was a female Lieutenant Colonel. The young 18-year-old, fresh recruit had never seen women in these high-ranking positions. These 2 women would become mentors to the ambitious Ramona in her efforts to crash through glass ceilings as she built her career. “I could not have had better mentors. The strength of character they had. The belief they had in me,” Ramona says passionately and with tears in her eyes. Decades later she still recalls their role in helping her with vivid clarity. The confidence these women helped build within Ramona gave her the gumption to apply to be a Base Honor Guard, a role set aside for only men at that time. After she applied, she was told she could not join the Honor Guard because she was a woman. Lieutenant Colonel “saw red” upon hearing of this news from a disappointed Ramona. She marched her into the Inspector General’s office, firmly telling Ramona to “tell him what you just told me.” Ramona smiles ear to ear recalling how that’s what it took for change. “I was selected for Base Honor Guard Team; the first female!”

Honor Guard was just the 1st in a long string of accomplishments she can boast of now, including being the recipient of the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Air Force Achievement Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, Outstanding Airman of the Year Ribbon, and Air Force Overseas Long Tour Ribbon, just to name a few. She went on to be stationed all over the country. She has been stationed in Texas, Mississippi, Hawaii, Virginia, Colorado and even the Pentagon. “There are more people

that would be honoring women who have served. Ramona applied and to no one’s surprise, was accepted to participate. The flight, which took place June 11, 2022, was one she will not forget.

“They had the highest-ranking military woman in history as our guest speaker. Her name is General Lori Robinson. She just recently retired. Not only was she a 4-star General, but she was the first female commander of a war fighting command.” Ramona’s excitement was unable to be masked with sharing about how far women have come since she enlisted back in 1973. “She was dynamo!”

The morning after the dinner was the big event. “We were all assigned a flight buddy. There were 132 of us on that flight times 2. It was an incredible day,” Ms. Turner’s voice escalates with enthusiasm as she goes on to describe the event, “They sent us off with bagpipes. We had a water salute from the fire department. We had our own plane, our own service attendants, our own pilots. When we got to DC, the DC fire department did a water salute as well. As we deplaned, there were all these people at our gate dressed in red, white, and blue cheering and clapping for us. There was a quartet of men singing. There were banners hanging from the rafters.” The group of honored veterans were then taken to the Military Women’s Memorial. “Our histories and pictures are all there for perpetuity; we are all there now,” she boasted. The group went to Arlington, watched the changing of the guard and to the World War II memorial. At the end of their exhilarating day, they began their journey back home where they were cheered along the way.

in that building than in the whole county of Henderson,” she continues describing the grandeur of the world’s largest office building, “It has miles of corridor. I don’t even know how many water fountains. It has so many cafeterias. It even has a post office, a bank, and a hospital; you could live there and never need to leave.” Despite the historical significance and size of the structure she explained that “it never felt crowded.” Ramona retired from the military in 1995. She had a family and eventually moved back to Henderson to help look after her aging father. Even after seeing the country and serving it at the highest levels she acknowledges “there is no place like home.”

According to Honor Flight Kentucky (HFK) they are a “501(c)3 with the mission of flying World Word II, Korean War and Vietnam War veterans to see the memorials in Washington, D.C., that are dedicated to their service and sacrifice. This is a one-day, all expenses paid trip that leaves from and returns to Bluegrass Airport in Lexington.”

The night before, the women chosen for the flight attended a dinner hosted by the Kentucky Historical Society in Frankfort.

She again filled with tears of sheer pride when we recalled a quote from General Robinson. The night before the flight at the dinner, the General told the women, “Your shoulders are the broadest of all because the rest of us stood on them.” The trail-blazing Ramona Turner, along with other brave, determined women along the way, helped make the road for women coming in behind them a bit smoother.

“When we came back from our flight, General Lori Robinson, US Air Force retired, was there waiting for us in her military uniform, blinded by the light of the 8 stars on her shoulders, 4 on each side. She was cheering for us. She was hugging us as we walked through. Some of the women on this flight had never felt appreciated until then. The trip was the pinnacle of their time in the military.”

ratitude is defined as the quality of being thankful. Many experts tell us that being grateful can give us higher levels of overall happiness in our lives. We all want to level up our happiness in this world and we should be teaching our children this skill as well. As parents, we are very good about teaching and encouraging our children to say thank you to others because it is important to make others feel appreciated and happy and it’s just good manners. But did you know there are huge benefits that come from expressing gratitude to both the giver and receiver? This is the reason we need to be very intentional about teaching our children why it is so important to express and show gratitude to Teachingothers.achild to express gratitude can be one of the more challenging parts of parenthood. Gratitude Changes Everything

Written by Christina Dalton

I know if you are still with me at this point in the article you are all in. Those benefits are too good to pass up on. So now you’re wondering how to teach gratitude to your children? I’m here to give you some tips for doing just that.

years old they really have a good grasp of the concept. We want to start modeling this behavior as soon as possible though because even if they are unable to express gratitude all the time they are still taking it in. As they get a little older, they can really understand the concept of empathy which is closely linked to gratitude. When you can really understand another person’s perspective it helps you understand their actions and gives you a clear lens to see what they are doing as kind or generous.

concept of gratitude is very abstract. When you think about a young child, their worldview can tend to center around themselves. Teaching and modeling gratitude for your child is so important as they grow up. You are setting them up to be less entitled, more empathetic and mentally healthy. Not to mention less stressed and happier people. Gratitude studies show that there are so many benefits to practicing it everyday. Increased sleep, better moods, fewer health problems, more resilience, increased ability to cope with stressors and overallThosehappiness.aresome amazing benefits to being grateful, but can you teach this to your children? I think being realistic about it is a great start. Children under the age of 6 may have a harder time expressing gratitude but by the time they are about 10

This is a great one and easy for everyone to do. You can have a jar in your house and whenever someone feels grateful about a certain moment,

Let them be part of donating to your community - This practice teaches your children that there are others who may be less fortunate than them. This will show them even more reasons to be thankful for what they have and to incorporate the practice of giving to others who may be in need. You can help them to go through their toys and donate some things to others. This has many benefits because you are teaching them to be generous, letting go of things and giving back all at the same time. So many skills to be learned in this one simple practice. With older kids you can let them be part of deciding where to donate and teach what community agencies do in your area.

routine and encourage this to be a lifelong behavior for them.

Tonight, recall with your family all of the moments that you are thankful for today. Be intentional about this practice. Model this skill for them. You could do this when you eat dinner or before they go to bed. Ask them what was their favorite part of the day? Then ask them why they are thankful for that part. You can point out the more common things in life and model this behavior of being grateful for even the smallest of moments. You can make this an easy three step process. Ask them what they are thankful for and then ask why they are thankful. Lastly follow up with what behaviors can you repeat to make this happen again? Doing this daily will create

This is an easy one. There are so many opportunities to help people in our community. Be intentional about this one and age appropriate. You can help an elderly neighbor with a house project. You can help them to find local causes that they care about and figure out how to be part of them. They could have special skills and talents that can be utilized and build their self esteem in the process. No matter how you help others, this will increase your gratitude and appreciation of being in a place that you can help someone else.

If you have read my articles before you know I am a big proponent of modeling what you wish to see in your children. This one seems easy but we often overlook the importance of demonstrating this skill. Show them gratitude. Model gratitude every single day for them and for you. Demonstrate being kind to others and doing nice things for no reason. Show them how grateful you are for your home, your friends and family and all the opportunities that life affords to you.

to do these things for the people you care about. This one is so easy because it can be as simple as giving someone a sincere compliment, paying for the person’s food behind you in a drive thru or leaving a really nice thank you note for someone who helped you out in a special way. The benefits of this one will continue to deepen and have lasting effects for you and the receiver.

This is one that anyone can do. Take your children on a walk and talk about what they see, smell, hear and notice during this time. Then discuss what are their favorite parts of the walk. Be mindful about noticing all the small things on your walk. Use this time to ask them what they are grateful for during the walk. Is it the smell of the flowers, the warmth of the sun or seeing a bunch of adorable puppies and kittens in their

they write it on a piece of paper and drop it in there. You can have special times set aside to read all of the comments as a family. When you do this practice you are creating a culture of gratitude in your home. This will end up being such a special time to come together, connect and appreciate each other. It’s a wonderful way to put statements in there about the small things in life too that we all sometimes take for granted.

Research and ensure that your photo location allows dogs before showing up. If your dog is nervous around crowds of people, taking them into a busy spot for photos isn’t a good idea. Consider your dog’s favorite places for a possible photo session location — even if that means a cuddly session on your couch.

If your session is somewhere other than your home, consider bringing a friend or family member to help manage your dog. After including the dog in a few shots, the helper can take your dog for a walk away from the group so they stay happy while you finish your family photos, focused on your children and having fun.

There’s no denying that our pets are just furry family members!

DOG’S PERSONALITY

BRING ALONG A DOG WRANGLER

If your dog is full of energy, make sure they get a good workout before your photo session so they’re a little tired. A tired dog is a happy dog! To keep your photo day as laid-back as possible, enlist a friend to take them for a long walk or to the park for a run. Right before your session, arrive early so you can let the dog explore. Doing so allows them to get used to the environment, do their business and get comfortable enough to relax with you.

If your pup gets overwhelmed, give them a break and focus on the human members of your family. No matter how much you prepare, your dog will ultimately dictate the session. You may be able to get candid-style photos of your family playing with the dog much easier than you get a posed picture. That’s OK! Remember that this is a great way to show their personality and represent their importance to you. Be sure to ask your photographer to snap a portrait of your dog on their own so you have it to cherish always. HF

COME PREPARED

EXERCISE THEM BEFORE THE SESSION

If your dog is a big shedder, or their fur is the opposite color of the outfits you’re wearing, make sure to toss a lint roller in your bag. This will help avoid unwanted hair in your photos and help you clean up afterward!

CONSIDER A NICE COLLAR AND LEASH

Don’t leave home without a leash, treats, your dog’s favorite squeaky toy and waste bags. Also, bring water for your pup if it’s a hot day. Treats can make all the difference in your session if your dog is food motivated, so bring their most valued snack to your session. Just steer clear of anything messy so you don’t stain your clothing.

BRING A LINT ROLLER

While planning the outfits the people in your photos will wear, consider getting a collar and leash that will coordinate. You don’t want a neutral-toned family photo with your dog wearing a neon harness. Dress up your pup with a coordinating bowtie or bandanna, or stay timeless with a classic leather collar. You’ll want the leash to match or be neutral in tone, so it doesn’t stand out too much. I recommend letting your dog try these accessories out a day or two before the session so they aren’t thrown off by something new.
