Important Functions of Engine Control Unit

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) is the brain of the engine that controls all the functioning of the engine.

It is one of the critical components which link the engine to the central computer of the car.

The ECU controls the function of actuators on an internal combustion engine.

The functioning of the ECU can be described in the following ways.

Controlling the air-fuel mixture

The ECU helps to control the fuel delivery system used by the engine.

It determines the amount of airfuel mixture that should be injected into the engine cylinders.

The ECU receives the data from the sensors & decides the appropriate amount of fuel and air for the mixture.

It has also the control over the time of injection of the mixture to generate sufficient power.

Controlling the ignition timing

The ECU adjusts the exact timing of the spark or ignition timing to provide a better fuel economy.

The inbuilt sensors help the ECU to detect whether there is any problem in the compression stroke.

It finds unburnt air-fuel mixture and subjects it to the combination of heat and pressure.

When the ECU detects the knocking, it delays the time of spark to prevent it.

Controlling the idle speed

The modern cars come with an inbuilt control system in their ECU for controlling the idle speed.

Mostly the idle speed is controlled through the programmable throttle stop.

The ECU also controls the timing at which the valve open or close in the engine cycle.

The appropriate timing of opening & closing of valves helps in increasing the engine power & efficiency.
