The massing developed from two blocks of the main hall and the reception. The reception is strategically located to accommodate two entry levels for users arriving at the site from different directions.

Concept Sketches Inspired by the adjacent old quarry of A Kung Ngam, the project steers away from conventional sports center layout and aims at calling back to the historical identity of the industrial area, as surrounding redevelopment passes over the site's historical context. The massing layout is heavily inspired by industrial facilities, as separated massings are connected by exposed tubes serving as vertical and horizontal circulations - a key design feature reminiscent of conveyor belts found in mining facilities.

The design then evolved into more separated massing to accommodate the gym and climbing silo. Cylindrical tubes are then introduced to connect the massings and serve as vertical and horizontal circulations, as well as functional spaces of running track, climbing silo, and as communal spaces on the ground plaza.

Castellated beams are the main structural element for the main hall, as mechanical ducting can be integrated with the structure and exposed together in the interior to give an industrial presence to the design.

The tubes are not limited to horizontal circulation, as they also serve as a cantilevered running track and escalators that bring users a fresh experience. The massive climbing silo serves as a call back to the historical quarry of the site and allows climbers of all levels to try out.

The long sectional perspective shows the integration between massing and the landscape. The main hall and the gym are lifted from the sloped site to create a continuous public space from the streetscape to the landscape in A Kung Ngam. Glass cylinders intertwine with the public plaza, serving as a pop-up store, food stall, and children playground.

Interior view of Running Track The juxtaposition between blocks and tubes is a key design feature. The exposed tubes connecting massing imitate conveyor belts of industrial facilities. The conveyor belts bring minerals around in the past - the tubes bring health and fitness to people today. The tubes also serve as clear indicators of circulation and help people navigate around the building. Finally, the structure and porous envelop of tubes bring an energetic look to runners.

The exposed structure and mechanical services of the interior give a dynamic and energetic feel in contrast to the exterior. Design options in the interior tested out the color of the castellated beam and the possibility of a false ceiling. The juxtaposition of these features truly reflects the image of a POWER HOUSE.

View from quarry

Facing the defunct stone quarry, the gym provides connection to the public park below. Design option studies were carried out to see how each option would respond to the quarry and public space, including facade openings, materiality, as well as exposed circulation cores. The final option serves as a welcoming connection between the gym and the public park.

This project is located in the rural area of Cairns, Australia. The 4000m2 Equestrian Center provides a full scale 60m x 20m indoor arena, as well as stable spaces holding up to 20 horses of all sizes. The arena and the stable are connected through the circular hub, a large span cantilever structure that has two levels to bridge the level difference between the two programs. Inside the hub, administrative office is located on the ground floor connected to the arena, while a viewing deck and a cafe overlooking the arena are positioned on the second floor, connecting to the stable units. The radiant plan of the project spirals out through the hub, linking the staff accommodation and parking space all within the same scheme.

The structure type used in the arena and the stable are three point glulam arch frames spanning 6m for the arena and 4m for the stable. The hub has 16 glulam cantilever beams that are joined by a glulam ring at the center, as well as cable stayed system to prevent buckling.

Conceptual Models

Inspired by the unique characteristics of Sai Ying Pun of endless slopes and stairways, the Library of Stairs is created by manipulating the functionality of stairs within a place of knowledge.

Sitting on a slope, the library was designed to merge with the surrounding context, extending the gradient of the site to the programmes of a library.

The stepping nature of the project provides many design opportunities, as shown on the stair variations. For example, the added height difference gave reading area and study carrels an extra level of separation from public circulations.

Fosterstrasse House by Christian Kerez

Multi-family House at Forsterstrasse, Zurich, Switzerland, Christian Kerez, 2003 (El Croquis 145) The U2 tectonic studio is a set of design exercises that originated from a designated precedent project. Inspired by the slab tectonics from the Fosterstrasse House

by Christian Kerez, the Folding Page is a temporary bookstore located in a public plaza on the CUHK campus.

The concept of the design is simple: the entire building is articulated by folding and cutting a single, continuous surface. The premise gave rise to a series of exploration designs, finding the balance between the number of partition walls, facade openings, and structural integrity.

Each side of the continuous surface was given a different material to emphasize the inside/outside relationship. The design's structure uses timber waffle slab cladded with perforated aluminium panels. The waffle slab can also serve as bookshelves. The porosity of the two materials serves well to bring natural lighting into the bookstore, as well as adding extra depth into the complexity of the design.

The Folding Page sits on a crowded plaza in the CUHK campus. An important junction in the campus, highlighted by the nearby University Library and the adjacent student canteen. The design takes advantage of the pedestrian flow with a west side entrance and opening up the north and west side as a public cafe to reclaim the lost public space in the plaza. The folded slabs create a free-flowing space within the bookstore, yet effective in separating circulation and quiet reading area. A set of stairs lead readers up the floors to more bookshelves, as well as outdoor reading areas. Quiet reading space is located on the top floor and faces the hilly terrain of the CUHK campus. This spatial arrangement provides a tranquil reading space, away from the busy plaza below.

Plug-in Vessel 2021 TRAA Competitons Team Members Matthew Choy, Leon Lai Role | Design Studies, Final Drawings The cruise ship industry has been devastated by the global pandemic, with thousands abandoned, or even forced to sell as scraps. Taking advantage of a cruise ship's structure, capacity, and mobility, this project transformed the ship into a long-term habitable complex, extending from the urban fabric by utilizing its existing transport infrastructure and retail space. In the event of a future virus outbreak, the ship can be temporary detached from the shores in isolation.

This project is a vision applicable to various cities, by adapting existing infrastructures and revitalizing lost asset into a resource that would benefit society.

SCAFFOLD GARDEN Located at the center of the ship, original structure of the ship provides the scaffold for vertical farming and vegetation to grow.

ABOVE DECK UNITS The porostiy of the above deck units takes advantage of the sea breeze, natural airflow passes through the units and into the outdoor atrium.

DECK PLAZA The deck is the place to socialize. A stream of water runs along the deck both as a water feature and to further cool down the deck.

BELOW DECK WARDS space below deck takes advantage of this enclosed nature and implements a isolated ventilation system.

Negative air pressure ensures contaminated air would not expell to the above deck.

Atrium The crowded, cramped interior complex of a cruise ship is carved out and repurposed as a semi-open atrium, leaving two single-loaded residential blocks on each side, using the original spatial and structural framing to save modification time and cost. The semi-open plaza serves as a continuous community space for residents to socialize and relax. Shops, cafe, and market spaces are located on the deck level of the residential slab block, separating public and private space in the community, as well as providing daily necessities for the residence.

A linear water feature running along the deck to create a sense of belonging and community among the residents, while providing a cooling effect to the complex. The spatial framing from the original ship structure remains in the middle of the ship, which connects to the transportation hub. This provides a welcoming entrance space.

The structural framing also allows the potential for vertical farming and above deck community space, further enriching the living experience on the floating community. *Group Work

Co-working Space

Temporary Ward / Quarantine Bubbles

The large below deck space originally used as accommodation units and other amenities are transformed into a continuous open plan co-working space. Residents in this floating community can thus conveniently go to work in a friendly environment that welcomes small start-up companies, creative outlet, and even self employed individuals. The grid of glass boxes in between the open working area can be used as a meeting room, office, or even creative workshop.

The porous working space allows ideas to be exchanged fluidly amongst co-workers.

In the emergency of a pandemic outbreak, the large coworking space will be transformed into a temporary ward / isolation space. The open plan co-working space allows rapid modifications to meet a tight schedule for a change.

The enclosed below-deck space juxtaposes with the open residential units, creating a sense of security for those who need to quarantine. The multi-purpose glass boxes can also be modified into isolation wards, with ample space between each box for adequate separation.

Typical Cruise Accomodation 2500

A typical accommodation on a cruise ship is a linear space, suitable for two guests on a short term stay. Without a kitchen and a proper division between living and resting space, long term accommodation will be uncomfortable, and high risk common amenities would be required. Moreover, the narrow unit created a hyper-dense cluster of units without consideration for natural lighting and air circulation within the vessel.

The proposed apartment unit combined space from three typical cruise accommodation units and offers a comfortable environment for long term stay. A unit is removed to create a semiprivate entrance for two adjacent units and connects to the double height living room. The bedroom is located on the mezzanine floor, creating a sense of hierarchy within the apartment complex.

The curtain glass wall on each room opens up towards a harbor view, giving a sense of tranquility to the inhabitants.
