A LETTER FROM MARKETING When we imagine the people who fill creative office spaces, we often think of eccentrics, innovators, and early adopters—people who are challenging the status quo and working differently to accomplish their goals. Up until recently, we have focused our efforts in this industry primarily around casual residential-style spaces— unexpected collaboration areas, lounge settings, community cafés— to encourage collaboration, connection and innovation. Today, however, we feel we need to shift our focus to more creative efforts on how to bring people back to the office in a safe and healthy manner. For the moment, small huddle rooms and Parisian café tables are taking a backseat… but not forever (hopefully).

As our team began collecting content for this issue of Puzzle, it became apparent that we needed to find a way to effectively marry a collection of incredible product with leading research and innovation that have come to the surface regarding the pandemic. Ultimately, we are all working hard to navigate a path towards a brighter future and finding ways to make that happen. While the office may still feel like a foreign concept to many of us, we hope these beautiful products, aspirational research, and recent completed projects inspire you and keep you working for a better tomorrow.

Many of you may know that our company is lucky to have a number of University of Michigan alumni whose football coach recently came up with what may be the perfect tagline. So, from all of us here at Tangram and in the words of Jim Harbaugh, “Stay Positive, Test Negative.”

03 Uhuru 1x1 Stool

Jueki’s form and namesake originate from the viscous, sweet sap that flows from a tree. Its four legs appear to pull away from the softly curved seat, without disturbance or force. The effect is highlighted in its underside, in the way the wood grain appears to flow downward. The leg ends round slightly as they meet the floor, like the final drippings of the sap itself.

Timeless for many reasons. Uhuru’s 1 x 1 Stool plays off the 1 x 1 Chair’s proportion with an inset wood seat and back. The low back and boxed legs illustrate a distinctly contemporary look that makes this bar stool popular from work kitchens to restaurants and bars.

OFFICEUNTITLED reimagines the office for post COVID-19 workplace

Breaking Tradition

Being an innovative, young and energetic design and architecture firm, OFFICEUNTITLED focuses on creative solutions across all their projects with collaboration and teamwork at the forefront. Recently, they applied their hands-on research-driven design approach to what the future of work will look like post-COVID. They have gradually transformed their existing office space to test out various options for an initially socially distanced workplace with a prime focus on enabling collaborative team work to maximize the time staff members spend together in the office.

While everyone agrees that being in the office allows for better collaboration, OU focused to enhance the in-office experience for its staff. The 5,000-square-foot warehousestyle Culver City office holds up to 50 people. A garage door and five operable skylights open to the outdoors and allow for natural ventilation. The space features two enclosed conference rooms, three open meeting areas, and a sizeable model workshop.

Re-Imagined Workstations Custom furniture design has been a part of OU’s design DNA since its start in 2011. For this project, the team has been investigating more unique and diverse desking types as individual workstation needs have changed with people coming in less often. Finding greater value in ‘homecoming’ over ‘hoteling,’ OU is testing out the idea of two to three

Three months into the pandemic, the team began evaluating their staff’s use of their space as part of an internal research initiative. A five-person core team took a critical look at existing research, how the teams used the space before the onset of the pandemic, and relevant trends. Using their own office as a lab, they began testing out physical arrangements for five office areas: outdoor space, reception, informal gathering areas, kitchen and individual workstations.

“The opportunity to rethink and test how we work is important both for ourselves and our clients,” says Christian Robert, OU CoFounder and Principal. “The main challenge we’re trying to solve is accounting for the ways work will change while maximizing the long-term benefits of getting together.”

Product Grouping

The previous bench layout rearranges into four L -shaped team areas to work closer together while maintaining an individual workstation for staff to accomplish focus tasks, yet still be able to quickly reach out and get feedback on an idea. The team relied on analog almost as much as digital with a physical space not only playing a role in winning client work, but also allowing staff to see what other teams are working on, spurring the design process forward through casual collisions.

The new star-shaped layout test fit OU has developed allows each team to take over the adjacent wall areas with screens and whiteboards displaying team project relevant content.

Each team is in their own quadrant of the ‘X’ and has the chance to partake in a unique workstyle to diversify the

space and collect feedback. This layout additionally provides an improved sense of safety with the knowledge that each quadrant will only be shared with 3-4 other people—a smaller scale version of a series of projects that OU and Studio Other designed for BCG Digital Ventures.

BCG Digital Ventures, Manhattan Beach The headquarter for BCG-Digital Ventures, an innovation incubator for Boston Consulting Group, is located in Manhattan Beach, CA. Each area of the 55,000-square-foot floor plan is designed for a specific DV team and includes a center workstation room, venture room, center lounge area and a scrum room, designed and intended for collaboration.

Breaking Tradition

“This design is so befitting to what’s happening today,” says Charlotte Wiederholt, Studio Other President. “If it’s an office of 300 people, instead of exposing yourself to 300 people, you’re exposing yourself to 10 people. It feels much more manageable, controllable and safe.”

With pods and sub-areas more relevant than ever before, “separation now provides the option to come together,” adds Robert.

OU and Studio Other created unique hexagon-shaped conference tables for both the large and small rooms. Each table was designed with mobility and adaptability so that they could fit perfectly into the corners of the hexagonshaped rooms.

The New Function of the Office As is expected, the process of reimagining the office and configuration stems from the foundational reality that the purpose of the office has significantly changed. According to Wiederholt, the three new functions of the office are culture, collaboration and training.

“You’re no longer in the routine of going into the office every day because you have to. I go when I know my other coworkers are going to be there because there will be a chance to collaborate or catch up on projects,” says Wiederholt. “You have to come together to understand

who your coworkers are, understand their personality, their sense of humor.”

In OU’s case, they’re turning the resimmercial trend on its head, wanting their space to emulate environments that cultivate hospitality, connection, and breaking of bread.

While those who meet in the office a couple of days a week partake in two-hour focused times where they work on individual tasks, a greater emphasis has been placed on shared meals in their communal kitchen that bookend the heads-down sessions.

“We’ve always wanted our office to look more like a hotel lobby or restaurant rather than an office,” says Robert. “We’ve been continually asking ourselves, ‘What is the value of bringing people together who usually only see each other remotely?’”

After a year of remote work, employees’ expectations of their workspace are likely to shift in a dramatic way, with the possibility of increased lounge and informal spaces.

“Now that we’re used to working from home, it’s important to replicate that in the office. You don’t want to have to leave your home to go work in a white sterile box,” says Wiederholt.

They want and need a safe and compelling workplace that’s inspiring, more flexible and helps them get work done. They also want more control over where and how they work and designers will need to create spaces to solve for an even more diverse set of needs. Different design approaches will be required to create spaces that support the new ways people want to work and the things organizations need to compete effectively.

Equally support individual and team work While some believe the primary reason people want to work in the office is for group activities, people say they also want the ability to focus and work in a professional environment. Relying on home offices to support individual work isn’t viable for an inclusive organization, because various factors — such as limited home space, distractions or commute time — make it challenging for people to always do individual work from home.

Designers need to balance the needs of teams and individuals by creating neighborhoods where both collaboration and focused work can ebb and flow.

Design for greater flexibility and mobility Design planning in the past often relied on a more formulaic approach, with a mindset toward permanent architecture and office settings. The new realities of how people and organizations need to become more agile requires designers to plan spaces that will regularly morph and change as needed.

More enclosed “me” and open “we” spaces Learnings from the work-from-home experience and early returns to the office show new patterns emerging.

People, who often did individual work in more dense, open spaces, desire more enclosure or shielding to control privacy and safety. Enhancing human experience through technology People and organizations will embrace hybrid working from home and office, travel will be less frequent and so remote collaboration is here to stay. Designers need to create solutions for individual and group video interactions that are not constrained to laptops or phones.

TikTok, the short-form video app that has taken the world by storm, was the most downloaded app worldwide of 2020 with over 2 billion downloads reported back in April, according to Forbes. Therefore, it came as no surprise when the company announced their Los Angeles operation’s move to a new 120,000-square-foot office in Culver City early 2020, a clear sign of their growth and ambition.

“Located between the innovative tech companies in Silicon Beach and the streaming content companies at Hayden tract, TikTok truly sits at the intersection of technology and entertainment, physically and figuratively,” said Vanessa Pappas, TikTok General Manager. “While we are a global company, having a permanent office in LA speaks to our commitment to the U.S. market and deepens our bonds with the city, and the talent and companies, that call it home.”

engaged Tangram Interiors to provide all of the workstations and conference room furniture. The height-adjustable Steelcase workstations provide freedom of choice to all of the users and serve as a visually-clean space for heads-down work. The TikTok team was so impressed with Tangram’s product selection and installation, that they have been selected to provide ancillary furniture on future projects.

TikTok’s new space occupies five floors at the C3 campus and was designed “to embody TikTok’s fun and joyful personality,” says the company.

The new office features an open floorplan with conference rooms, private phone booths, a stadiumstyle presentation and community space, and terraces for indoor/outdoor work. Additionally, a contentcreation studio was completed this summer, a facility now available to TikTok creators and partners.

The office was designed in collaboration with global architecture and design firm Gensler, who then

"...the space is a love letter to Los Angeles, where entertainment and technology meet to embody all that is TikTok." Upon entering, you will be greeted by a seemingly stark lobby with a single reception desk. However, wait a mere moment and the space will transform into a wildly visual and kinetic scene, thanks to the 100-footlong LED wall with constantly changing images and text, making for the perfect backdrop for any photo or video. At the heart of the office is an eye-catching hot pink staircase, an ode to their logo, that runs through each floor and follows a bespoke mural crafted by their internal design team.

With exposed ceilings and infrastructure, matched with expansive windows that provide a full view of LAX and the Pacific Ocean, the building is a celebration in

itself. On the second floor resides the café, with a long buffet table backed by ceramic tiles depicting old skateboard decks as a nod to SoCal culture. Keeping with this theme is the ceiling featuring a tangle of neon, alluding to Los Angeles’s freeways, the infamous 405, 10 and 5. These spaces are accompanied by an additional coffee and tea lounge with colorful booths, lovingly referred to as “Hollywood squares.”

Between the views, the vibrant colors, and ‘60’s popstyle artwork, the space is a love letter to Los Angeles, where entertainment and technology meet to embody all that is TikTok.
