In a recent pilot project, our LED technology successfully demonstrated how its freely programmable and intelligent control system is able to meet the complex demands of any traffic and roadwork situation.

This pilot project implemented 5+0W alternating one-way traffic control on the A 95 MunichGarmisch-Partenkirchen motorway in the course of restoration works.

This complex traffic control, among others, was only possible by the high flexibility of dynamic LED alternating traffic signs.

The results of this project were positive all around and exceeded all expectations. There was no traffic congestion during peak traffic, and at least 200 000 congestion hours could

According to the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) forecast for 2025 traffic, passenger and goods traffic are set to increase significantly.

This means that every responsible person will now and in the future be facing enormous challenges, demanding maximum flexibility of traffic planning.

Since the perfect condition of infrastructure is significant in this respect and whereas this cannot be guaranteed without the necessary restorati-

on, planners will time and again be facing new challenges of maintaining traffic flow despite road works. This is where Nissen’s LED technology will assist with active light.

This project therefore represents a milestone for future traffic control at long duration road works and is set to serve as an example for further construction projects.

Helping to shape Nissen’s success story for over 50 years

Interview with Mr. Hans-Adolf Gabriel, Technical Director and Associate

Good day Mr. Gabriel, what does 21 March 2015 mean to you?

Mr. Gabriel: Well, this day was indeed a significant one in my professional life. I turned 65, which also means that I reached my retirement age.

One should at this age think about taking things a bit easier and about passing on responsibilities, or at least the major part of these, to one’s successors or partners.

I can well imagine working a few hours less, allowing me to spend more time on my hobbies, such as music and golf, and also with family and friends.

I said to my wife some time ago that I, a total technology freak, would sell my computer and my smartphone when I retire and write letters by hand only, with a pen. She just laughed out loud.

I believe, however, that a person who has been engaged in technology intensively and with enthusiasm for virtually a lifetime, will find it hard to simply let go, since his interest in technology will remain.

You have now been loyal to the Nissen company for 50 years. You have surely experienced a lot over the years. Could you share some very “special” incidents?

Mr. Gabriel: Yes, of course – there were a number of good but also some not so good experiences over the years.

1985: Hans-Adolf Gabriel I remember my first day at Nissen very clearly. It was the 1st of April, 1965, when I started my apprenticeship. I found myself in the Electrical Assembly department, where my first task was to unscrew the yellow lenses of approximately 50 strobe lights to replace them by red lenses. What a chaotic setup this is, I said to myself. Later it became clear to me that flexibility can mean the be-all and end-all of a company.

Apprenticeship as an electro-mechanical technician was tough, but also exciting. Early each morning the apprentices had to mount the company bicycle with the large basket in front to fetch milk or cocoa from the dairy and place this at every colleague's work station. And we were nevertheless expected to start our work at 6:45 a.m. sharp. Or we had to fire up the stove with wood and coal on winter Sunday nights to ensure the company was warm by Monday morning. I don’t believe today’s trainees, or rather apprentices, can even imagine this.

During my 3rd apprenticeship year, in the company’s development department, the head of development bought our first two transistors from the US for, believe it or not, 300.00 USD. This was sensational to us, since all we had known or built into our equipment thus far were vacuum tubes and relays.

I remained in the development department after my apprenticeship and, after finishing my Bundeswehr (German Armed Forces) training and my 2-year studies at the technical school, I found myself in this very interesting

department once again.

Considering worldwide developments in the field of electronics over these few years down to the present, I never ceased to be amazed.

We still used a slide rule in the first semester of my studies in 1973, but bought the first Texas Instruments calculator for DM 1200 in the second semester, with only the four basic arithmetic and square root calculations.

A fully programmable pocket calculator was the next development.

One of the most interesting development projects in which I participated at Nissen, I guess about 30 years ago, was the development of a mobile helicopter landing aid for the Bundeswehr.

We carried out field tests with the “Hungriger Wolf” helicopter squadron in Itzehoe, including also night flights with a “Bell” helicopter. At times, the helicopter collected us directly behind the company.

New product development is so comprehensive and interesting that I remain fascinated to this day.

2015: Interview of Mr. Gabriel by Ms. Dietz

When, 12 years ago, I was offered the opportunity to join the company and take over the Technical Department, I did not hesitate for a minute and I am grateful to my partner Dieter Wade for this opportunity to this day.

You will be stepping down as the Technical Director at Nissen on the 1st of June 2015. May we presume that you will continue your association with the company? How might this be like?

Mr. Gabriel: I actually can’t quite imagine what it will be like to stop working since we are, on the one hand, busy working on about 50 development projects and since, on the other hand, I have really enjoyed my interesting work to date. I will therefore continue to handle a few tasks and projects on the technical side and also be available for consulting, to share my many years of experience wherever needed, such as in the working groups of the BASt [Federal Highway Research Institute].

My colleague for many years and successor Kai Freund, who completed training with us and graduated in engineering in Flensburg, will be assuming technical management and its responsibilities. I wish him all the best and every success in this task, of course.

In my remaining position as an associate, I naturally feel strongly about the continuing success of my company.

Folding traffic sign

«FlapSign» – ready for deployment in seconds

A novelty in the Nissen product family – the 3-sided folding traffic sign FlapSign. The folding mechanism of this traffic sign allows it to be deployed in seconds, rendering it ideal for special and emergency deployment by the police, fire brigade or THW [Federal Agency for Technical Relief].

The three sides of the FlapSign can display different signs, meaning that a single folding traffic sign and 2 interchangeable signs may display up to 9 different traffic signs. Both the FlapSign and the interchangeable signs feature foil type 3 (prismatic). The carrier material has an aluminium-plastic-aluminium sandwich design as also found in façade construction, rendering it very sturdy and weather resistant.

The FlapSign may be combined with signal lamps for additional warning and traffic control, such as our Star-Flash LED 627, especially at dusk or at night.

Opening in Berlin ‒ Zeppelin Rental competence centre BVS On 10th of April 2015, our Berlin customer Zeppelin Rental had a special occasion for celebration – the opening of the new Zeppelin Rental competence centre BVS (Baustellen- und VerkehrsSicherung) [Road works and traffic safety] in the Siemensstadt suburb. The new premises cover an area of approx. 9 000 sq m. Approx. 1 000 sq m of these are halls, 650 sq m are offices and 7 350 sq m are open depot area.

We had the opportunity of informally socialising with the Zeppelin colleagues and other guests for a couple of hours. Thank you once again for the invitation. We wish you all the best for the future in your new offices at Wohlrabedamm 26.
