Wow! Tangmere you did us proud with the VE day celebrations considering the restrictions that we were living under at that time. The front cover and below is just a small snapshot of the decorations adorning local houses and it has been said that there were some social distancing parties going on in various streets of the village.

If you can share any more pictures or activities that happened then please email them for the July issue.

Due to the situation at the moment the Tangmere News will not be delivered to residents houses in the village until further notice but is available through the publishing platform issuu where it can be viewed online. It has also been proposed

to produce a monthly copy so that we can let residents know about events once they are allowed to be held.

Exercise during Covid-19 The current situation has had an impact on everyone’s daily lives and because of this it’s important that we try and look after ourselves. One of the main ways we can do this is through exercise which can help manage stress and is essential for both a healthy mind and body. Whilst gyms, community halls, pools and leisure centres remain closed this is a fantastic time to get used to moving more at home or outside and leave us with a habit that will continue to benefit long-term. Remember every movement counts so whilst going for walks is encouraged think about what you can do during the day as well to ensure you are not sitting still for long periods, stand up and walk around the room every 30 minutes, squats or knee bends whilst you are waiting for the kettle to boil, walking up and down stairs a couple of extra times during the day.

Due to lockdown requirements and the Corona virus our TaiChiFit group is currently suspended. Many of our attendees have supported and kept in contact with each other by text, phone and chance meetings whilst out social distance exercising.

At some point, adhering to guidance, it may be possible to do some Tai Chi on the village field, in which case members of the group will be notified along with notification via the village website.

We are looking forward to resuming our class and meeting again as soon as it is safe and possible to do so.

All our members are currently safe and well and we all hope all of you are safe and well.

Unfortunately due to the COVID-19 we have not been able to socialise with each other in the usual way which is a big part of the Community Garden. It is very strange to work over the Garden and not see anyone and have a Cuppa and a Chat however it has also been a lovely place to be during the Shut Down with plenty of Bird Song and Sunshine and the peacefulness the garden brings. We are communicating via our Facebook page to ensure we do the jobs required.

Kate who is the font of all knowledge when it comes to what needs to be done and when, has been keeping us informed of the jobs to be done and when, so we are looking forward to some bounty from the garden over the next month or so. Our Asparagus has been yet again a fabulous crop and I believe we have all enjoyed this in various forms and we still believe we are so lucky to have such a large bed of the wonderful crop.

In these strange times somethings carry on as normal with the return of our Blackbirds that have successfully nested within our HQ is the same nest they created within the arms of a pair of shears. The birds have successfully hatched and are currently making a bit of a mess within the HQ however it yet again has been lovely to watch them. It is lovely to see nature at work and watch these little birds grow.

We wish you all well as the slow return to a new kind of normal has started.

Chairman’s Report I read my report for the April-May edition, where I was looking forward to film nights to celebrate VE75, the Annual Meeting and cheese and wine event, as well as enjoying the daffodils around the village. In a few short weeks all that seems to have been blown away with the spread of the virus and the subsequent lock-down. The changes to shopping, working, social -interaction, play and recreation, travel and holidays feel likely to change forever our way of life.

Many commentators have drawn comparisons with the impact of the 2nd World War, and the far reaching changes that it brought. To be certain, this is the most dramatic and distressing time since the 1950’s, so many residents will never have experienced such profound change and uncertainty.

However, despite the terrible loss of life this virus has inflicted on mainly elderly people, there are many aspects of daily life that hold out hope for a better future. I have been impressed by the number of residents who have volunteered to offer help to vulnerable neighbours, by collecting prescriptions, doing shopping distributing donated food to individuals who cannot get out to list a few.

I would also like to pass on resident’s applause to Trevor Ware who entertained the entire village on VE Day by broadcasting favourite songs at numerous stops in the village.

So as we enter June, the 3rd month of severe restrictions on visiting family and entertainment events and going to work, we also seem to be entering a different set of challenges.

Now, with many residents either unable 6

to work, on short hours or seeing their savings drain away there are new challenges to face. These challenges are being felt in families who may never before have had such problems, and have never before sought any help.

At the same time the Parish Council has been able to establish a regular supply of prepared meals and fresh vegetables, and our objective is to try to deliver 3 or 4 proper meals per week to individuals, couples or families with children who just need a little help at the present.

The generosity of the various groups and companies who are providing these meals or even local residents who are making up meals with donated ingredients is such that we have a secure supply of meals available.

The Clerk to the Council has established a secure and confidential system for residents to be added to the delivery groups, so if you feel that you could do with a little support in these troubled times, then call Louise or Tina on 0203 9040980.

The Council decided to close the play area and the MUGA in response to the Government guidelines, but as soon as those restrictions were lifted for playing tennis we re-opened both courts. I am pleased to see that residents have started to use these courts as the sunny weather seems here to stay.

Regrettably the kiddies play area still remains closed under current guidelines, but we will open it as soon as is possible.

Orchard update

After saying it was a bad winter for fruit trees, it’s probably been one of the best springs for them. All of the trees were full of blossom, probably the best I’ve ever seen, and, of course, the weather has been so good that with little wind, lots of sunshine and virtually no frost the bees have hopefully done their work.

I have emptied the compost bin and mulched the trees to seal in all that winter wet into the ground. The soil in the orchard is so poor in some areas that a few of the trees are struggling. The soil is so stony and shallow that the ground is probably a little too free draining and does not hold on to moisture in dry spells.

Occasionally I find cans and lunch packets in the compost bin. Can people please take their rubbish home with them, although I appreciate that it is probably from office staff having their lunch in the orchard.

You may have noticed I have very gradually been trimming the hedge along the path. I have done this with hand shears and in short bursts so as not to disturb any nesting birds. When nesting season is over, I hope to complete the job in a tidier fashion.

Tangmere Community Support As many of you will be aware Tangmere Parish Council have set up the Community Support Group in order to help residents during the Corona Virus Crisis.

We recruited volunteers and asked residents who were the people that needed support. This has resulted in a resilient and sustainable group ready to help out in most eventualities, which include prescriptions: ordering , collecting and delivering. Shopping for those stuck inside or unable, for any other reason, not to be able to shop. We have also set up help with regular food deliveries. This has been possible due to the generosity of various organisations who distribute surplus food from growers, manufacturers supermarkets and restaurants.

We as a group are very aware that this is a fast moving crisis and realise that peoples circumstances will change as the consequences of the crisis unreel. Furlough will be changing, self employment support is a one off payment that will not last for long.

Unemployment, sadly, will be inevitable in some cases. Tangmere Parish Council want to be here for you whatever happens and if we can’t help personally we will know where to direct you for the assistance you need.

Challenging times to smile in the face of Covid-19 Now the saying “brush and floss the teeth you want to keep” is especially true!

At the time of writing all general dental practices in the UK have been closed to face-toface treatment of any kind on Health Authority instruction.

Should you have a problem we are only able to offered advice over the phone and then if you are a registered patient, prescriptions of medication to help, or then on-wards referral to an emergency dental care hub for very urgent problems.

We are working hard to enable our return The problem with our work is it often produces aerosols or saliva splatter that could spread the virus from an infected person.

Rest assured we will only return when we are allowed and reduced any risks to an absolute minimum.

We already have a class leading cross infection prevention decontamination facility and also positive air-flow ventilation systems in all rooms to change the air. To specifically tackle the virus we are investing “Virus-killer” airfiltration systems & Extra-oral suction to draw away aerosols from entering the air along with high-grade PPE. Please be aware there will be backlogs of urgent treatment so we will prioritise Denplan registered patients and urgent care patients.

One hope for the future What to say in times like these? I could write about how amazing it has been to see my children grow and become more resilient through this lockdown or about how heart-warming it has been to see the show of support and solidarity for those who are keeping us safe and the support volunteered for our community by our community. Instead I would like to share my hope for the future.

The campaign to make mental health as important as physical health was picking up before this lockdown began and as it goes on I hope it is becoming apparent to every local councillor, every MP, every leader and every decision maker how fundamental looking after our mental health wellbeing is now and after all of this is over. I hope that lessons are learnt and that it has been noted that during this time when we were looking after the wellbeing of our children, we were encouraging them to take part in physical activity, talking to them about what was going on so that they were not left anxious about the unknown, helping them to be creative and reminding them of the joys that nature and the outside world holds. We may have found creative opportunities to keep them reading and doing their sums or even found a way to engage them in the history of VE day.

What would a school that did this every day look like? How amazing would that school be? What would it be like for the value of this to be recognised and a school funded to provide a mentally healthy curriculum? That’s my hope.

That mental health for our children gets the recognition that it deserves so that 12

our schools can be a real early intervention. Who knows how the outcomes for our children could be changed as a result of this kind of school?

I would like to take this chance to congratulate Mr Turney and the staff team at Tangmere Primary Academy. They have been with our children (metaphorically speaking) the whole way through this time and have found novel ways to make the kids feel loved and cherished. I am grateful for their hard work and support.

Comments from your District and County Councillor Covid -19 has radically altered everyone’s life and made us all reflect on how much we have taken for granted for so long. It has also brought home how many people in our communities depend on medical and care support and who do not have family close by. The considerable range of efforts made by communities, Parish Councils, Local and National Authorities to mitigate the effects of social isolation have ensured the chances of someone in need of support at home being missed have been minimised to a very large degree. This is in no small part due to the hard work of volunteers and Local Authority workers who have shown great flexibility and willingness to get things done and keep services going.

Getting information up, down and across all the links in the support chains has been a major focus of effort.

A core part of this has been WSCC’s Community Hub (contact either 03302 227 980 or online via www.westsussex.gov.uk ) and getting updates and guidance out from WSCC and CDC to the many organisations and businesses that need it. Getting feedback to higher level organisations and decision makers has also been an essential activity.

Working from home and getting used to online meetings has been a new experience for many. It will be something to watch to see if a widespread and lasting change in working patterns and arrangements occur, as the implications for infrastructure investment and planning could be significant. This will also apply to home workstations as any ergo-

nomic shortcomings become more apparent with extended use!

The economic consequences of this situation have yet to be fully played out. Will we see a permanent change in the aviation industry and holiday patterns (major parts of the West Sussex economy)? Will increased online delivery of goods and services accelerate the change in high streets? Will prolonged capacity restrictions on public transport see increased car use and a willingness to walk and cycle more and further?

For Local Authorities, the impact on their finances from increased service demands and reduced income streams have so far only been partially mitigated by Government grants. This will become an increasingly acute matter, especially if significant parts of the working age population have to transition from one industry to another.

On a more local note, as people have been walking around more they have been noticing the amount of dog fouling and littering that has and does occur. There are two ways of dealing with this – peer pressure and reporting offenders to CDC. The Westhampnett Household Waste Recycling site is now taking black bag and green waste and CDC’s green waste collection service has continued.

Despite the prolonged dry weather, an eye has been kept on the water levels under Tangmere Rd within the village (noting the continued flow of surface water at the Museum bend) – work to ID then address the blockage has to wait until those levels fall.

Please keep safe and well. There will be challenges and changes ahead but eventually Covid -19 will become part of history as did previous pandemics and World Wars.

Times Past……. Number 7 Some things never change …………… a long time past folks were always asking the parish officers to make things happen. I have extracted a few of these questions from the parish magazine dated July 1898. 





Why don’t you enlarge the School at Tangmere to make more room when you arrange entertainments?

Why don’t you build a large parish room and erect an imposing looking building and call it the Tangmere Institute?

Why don’t you build a museum or a gymnasium?

As many of you know our lovely friendly village has grown beyond the wildest dreams of those villagers who raised these questions in 1898. So what has changed over the last hundred years or more? How many residents would be satisfied that all these requests for change have been carried out. After all we have a larger school, a newish village centre and a museum. However others might claim they are still waiting for the new community plan to unfold; it is now time for all our facilities to be updated. This being the case then I can only suggest that you follow the advice given by Rev Gaisford. ‘ perhaps you would like to give us a small contribution, don’t leave it to others and then complain afterwards when it is too late’ We have an opportunity to shape the identity of our village by contributing to the plans and making known our suggestions to parish councilors. Weald and Downland Museum keeps audiences and its supporters engaged and gives back to nurses in celebrating International Nurse Day. Calling all designers - Badges at the ready!

In September 2020 the Museum will celebrate its half century. To mark the occasion, it will be offering you, our readers, the chance to design a commemorative enamel badge, that they will put into production for sale in the Museum Gift Shop.

“It is with great pleasure, and thanks, that we welcome Downton Abbey star Hugh Bonneville and artist, Annie Timothy as judges for this competition. The competition is open for anyone 5 years old and above and is looking for a winning design for our celebratory 50 th badge, which will be produced and ready for sale in the Museum’s gift shop on 5 September, the Museum’s official 50th Birthday.” Commented Simon Wardell, Museum Director.

The Historic Fiction Competition

For those avid creative writers, here’s your chance to write that historic fiction short story!

For the over 18s there are 2 categories: Stories that related to an aspect of the Museum’s collection (houses or artefacts) Stories that are set anywhere between the years 900AD and 1930AD Entries must be no more than 2,000 words long.

For the under 18s, categories are: An illustrated story (picture book) of up to 100 words A story of between 400 and 600 words, which you may or may not choose to illustrate The Closing Date is 4 September 2020

Covid 19 situation As you are aware, the main entrance to the medical centre is closed for the time being and the dispensary is handling the issuing of medicine through the window on the Malcolm Road side of the building.

Although the doors are closed, the practice is open for business and the staff would encourage all patients with medical problems to phone reception.

Patients should not sit on problems.

Telephone triage is working well. The staff can also do video calls and this may be the way they will operate in future - it saves all the time sitting waiting and means patients can have their appointments while at work. Also, it might mean a reduction in the number of patients who don't turn up and waste their appointment.

Walks Most people are walking around the village and the cricket field at present, but as soon as lockdown permits we will resume our group walks in other areas around Chichester.

Neighbourhood Watch What a strange time this has been and still is. I personally, as well as still recovering from my broken knee cap, am currently in the ‘high risk’ group as designated by the Government and therefore being shielded for the foreseeable future. Despite this, with the help of 21st century technology I have been able to stay in touch with family friends and the community. I know there are others in Tangmere in the same situation as myself and I do hope that they are feeling as well supported as I do.

I have been a part of the Parish Councils Covid-9 Working Party: Tangmere Community Support, phone No 02039040980. We have managed to set up a group of local volunteers who have been helping residents in many ways, for example delivering and collecting prescription requests, purchasing newspapers and shopping and also delivering donated food parcels to those residents who cannot get food themselves for whatever reason. If you have any needs that are not being met, please ring the phone number above and I know they will do their utmost to help you out.

Stuck in my house it is hard to judge exactly what is going on outside, the only thing that springs to mind is the increase in noisy motorbikes and scooters whizzing around the quiet roads. I have actually seen 2 youths driving scooters with 2 girls as pillion passengers who were not wearing helmets. If you witness any of this dangerous anti social behaviour, please notify the Wardens (phone numbers at the back).

* * * * The weather has been very kind to us this Spring, and has enabled many to get to their allotments in good time and get the growing season under way. We have several new allotment holders and plots are full at the moment. We are not having any working party days or communal events until lockdown is lifted. However it is easy to maintain social distancing on and around the plots, so it is a good place to get some fresh air and exercise at the same time as growing produce. If lockdown has given us anything, it is the chance to truly reflect upon how we live our lives. During the past weeks, I have been lucky enough to devote more of my time to contacting members of the community. It has been heartwarming to learn of the number of people who feel there has been more of a community spirit during these uncertain times.

Many of the congregation of St Andrew’s are elderly and selfisolating, and it has been incredible to hear that they all feel they have been supported by family and neighbours. Whenever I have contacted them to see how they are coping, many have said how much they appreciate the community spirit that has been shown during these past weeks.

Jesus tells his disciples that they must “love your neighbour”. During this period of lockdown, we have seen so many examples where neighbourly love has shone through the darkness of isolation. Helping each other through acts of kindness such as, deliver food parcels, collecting shopping, clapping the NHS and even the simple swapping of a jigsaw puzzle. All of these are perfect examples of what Jesus reminds us is the basics of living together as a community.

It is understandable that we are all looking forward to things getting back to normal. However, let us not go back to the old “normal”, but look forward to continuing to love our neighbour, continuing to care about others and continuing to be a community that looks after each other.

Jesus told his disciples that they will be known as his disciples by the good that they do in the world. In our daily lives, we all have the opportunity to be known as a community that practices love for our neighbour. I hope that we make the decision for this outlook to become our new ‘normal’ when we are once again able to do so.

Times Past……. Number 8 A commentary on a recent musical and dramatic entertainment. 23rd July 1898 How did folk entertain themselves before radio, TV, and todays techy gadgets?

Old parish records provide an answer. ‘ We are rather proud of ourselves at Tangmere just at present, because there is some reason why we should be. It is not every village that could set up an entertainment such as we had at the school on Wednesday May 11th all created by the players and teachers themselves. It was an excellent performance; those who took part acquitted themselves right well.

Whom are we to thank?

The performers of course, but especially Miss Bayley, who must have worked so hard, to achieve such success. It was she who organised and arranged the evening ably supported by Mr Acford at the piano, and Mr Rusbridger behind the scenes.

We really must make the schoolroom bigger if we want to do more entertainment like this. How many were in the room?

Well now it must have been more than a hundred in a room too small for so many folks! Don’t tell the parish clerk or he will ban the next event!’

Perhaps the staff and children at Tangmere Academy could research the songs and reproduce a current day version as entertainment for village day pageant.

Tangmere Strategic Development Location (SDL) Update from Countryside Properties In light of the current precautionary measures that have been put in place both nationally and locally to halt the spread of the COVID-19 virus, including: social distancing; avoiding non-essential travel; and the prohibition of public gatherings, Chichester District Council has decided to temporarily suspend its plans to make a Compulsory Purchase Order in respect of the Tangmere Strategic Development Location. The Council remains committed to the delivery of its local plan requirements for this important strategic site, but is also mindful of the need to allow appropriate engagement within the statutory processes. This decision will be kept under review and as soon as the Council is in a position to progress proposals, a further update will be issued.

As the development partner appointed by Chichester District Council, Countryside supports this decision in light of the rapidly evolving COVID-19 situation. Accordingly, and in discussion with the Council, it has also been agreed to delay the submission of the outline planning application for the Tangmere SDL. The timing of the application submission will be kept under review alongside the Compulsory Purchase Order process, and further updates will be published on our consultation website as soon as they are available at www.countryside-tangmere.co.uk.

Tangmere Flower Club Diary Dates 12th June 2020 Kate from Katkins Flowers, Drapers Yard has sadly been cancelled.

We will have by now missed three demonstrations and meeting and getting together each month.

We hope that everyone is keeping well and safe during this lockdown.

Fortunately all our demonstrators so far have agreed to book other months when we can meet again, so we will not miss out.

In the meantime we would like to see your photographs of flowers or colourful shrubs from your gardens, with a view to using some of them in practical ways.

These can be emailed to janetcooper695@gmail.com together with your permissions to use them.

We will meet again when we can in the large hall at Tangmere Village Centre on the second Friday of the Month at 7.30pm for just ÂŁ4.50 per session with flower raffle prizes and a tea or coffee and biscuit break as well as a sales table. Occasional workshop evenings and outings. Supported by Jane Walker FORGE FLOWERS Halnaker and MANOR NURSERY Garden Centre Runcton. Both offer 10% Discount on floristry items with the 2020 Membership Card.

In an earlier issue of the Tangmere News we read about three students studying Primary Teaching at the University of Chichester who were involved with completing an Early Years Outside Area project at Tangmere Primary School. The project was to renovate the outside area - predominantly to provide the children of Sunflower Class (including the Nursery and Reception) with an outdoor reading space and a mud kitchen! Learning through play and learning outdoors has been found to really benefit children’s education.

Unfortunately, there was no funding for the project, so they set up a gofundme page for donations which raised ÂŁ180.

A project update received on the 16th May Hi Everyone!

We hope you are keeping safe and well! Life is all a bit surreal at the moment and unfortunately due to the circumstances (and as advised from uni), we are gutted to say we won't be able to finish the physical side of our project this May as planned.

We were really looking forward to this part of the project, finally getting everything together and bringing the project to life for the fantastic children. We have put in many hours since September (planning and resourcing) so it is such a shame that it can't go ahead right now.

We will be giving all donations, along with materials we have purchased or managed to collect to the school when it is absolutely safe to do so- alongside our plans and vision that we had for the project!

We are incredibly grateful for all of your support and generosity throughout the project!!

And of course the school for having us!
