Hello and welcome to another issue of the Tangmere News.

Hopefully you, your families and friends are enjoying the milder weather.

A number of residents have reported a failure of dog owners to clear up after their dogs on the recreation field and the village green. There are bags available next to the dog bin on the recreation ground and please remember that bags can be disposed of in the Chichester District bins situated around the village.

There is still a need for a distributor for the bottom end of Churchwood Drive, so if you are able to spend 15 minutes once every two months to cover this section please email distribution@tangmere-news.co.uk.

The Hub at the village centre has now been re-decorated and the floor polished and lacquered ready for the use by the youth club and the Pop up Café. It is hoped that a youth café will open up on a Friday night but the frequency with depend on the number of volunteers who come forward to help. ROTHER VALLEY CROQUET CLUB Now that the warm weather has hopefully arrived, why not spend more time outside taking gentle exercise to keep you healthy and your brain active. Croquet is a skilled game of ball sense and tactics.

We have friendly Club days, coaching sessions and matches against other clubs. Our Club has three well maintained lawns and is beautifully situated in the South Downs next to the village hall in Duncton, with ample free parking. Twinning Association We are looking forward to the visit from our friends from Hermanville-sur-mer over the weekend of 14-16 June. Over 30 French visitors will be staying with English families, and the highlight of the weekend will be a dinner dance at the Village Hall on Saturday evening: our French visitors love their dancing! We will be doing our Next cat viewing day best to show our French guests that despite Brexit, 22nd June an entente cordiale still persists in the Tangmere Twinning Association.

The next activity for the www.crrc.co.uk English contingent will be an evening of Boules and a bring-and-share French supper on Sunday 14th July at 5.30pm at Tangmere House.

Tangmere Strategic Development Location (SDL) Update from Countryside Properties Over the last six months Countryside Properties and its project team have been busy undertaking a number of on and off site surveys and studies in order to be able to start the process of preparing a Masterplan and outline planning application for the Tangmere Strategic Development Location (SDL). We have published monthly updates of survey work on site on our website - www.countryside-tangmere.co.uk - and will continue to do so.

Alongside this, Countryside has worked up a programme of engagement that will run alongside the planning and design processes for the Tangmere SDL. This will include engagement on technical aspects of the plans for the SDL, involving a series of masterplan design workshops with Tangmere Parish Council, along with events specifically designed for local residents and businesses. The community-focussed engagement will include drop in sessions on the Masterplan (currently proposed in late June 2019) and a public exhibition on the emerging outline planning application for the residents of Tangmere (currently envisaged for early September).

The engagement programme, which will continue beyond the submission of the outline planning application later this year, has been designed to keep the community informed of the process and the vision for the Tangmere SDL as it evolves. It will also allow the village community to raise any questions with Countryside and its development team, and to feed in to the development of the Masterplan and planning application.

The full engagement programme is displayed in a timeline which is available on our website at www.countryside-tangmere.co.uk. The activities that will be taking place in June and July are highlighted above.

Breaking the stigma In October 2015 a man named Ben Salmons broke his silence about the mental health issues that he had been struggling with after trying to take his own life at the age of 29.

He created the Break the Stigma initiative to help people understand more about the subject and to tackle common misconceptions. ( @LetsBreakStigma ) John Wilkins, managing director of Bedfordshire & Luton Health and Wellbeing Services, part of the trust that supported Ben said: “This is a conversation everyone should have, one in four people will experience some kind of mental health problem in the course of a year and suicide remains the most common cause of death in men under the age of 35. Nobody should feel awkward or uncomfortable discussing the issue of mental health.”

This makes me think of a conversation I have had a few times with other mums. If my son comes home and says that he got tackled in training and has hurt his leg, I will sit and look at it, maybe clean it up and put a plaster on it. I will keep an eye on it and ask him how he is doing. When my son comes home and gets angry really easily I will automatically start talking to him, eventually we will get to talking about his day and ask for his high and his low point. It may be then or later that evening when I put him to bed when he finally tells me about the things that were making him feel angry or sad. I have done for his mental health what I did for his physical health, I took a look, thought about what I could do, cleaned it up a bit by talking it through and then reassured him that what he was feeling was ok and understandable. We can then talk about how or if he can solve this.

The need for our mental health to be considered the same as our physical health is becoming more urgent. We are happy to show support for someone who has broken a leg but what if someone tells us that they have taken the day off work because they are stressed but they look relatively ok, what would you think? There is much more information and education needed about mental health conditions especially if we are to help the group of people who are most vulnerable to committing suicide due to feeling unable to talk through how they feel, our young men.

Tangmere Parish Council Annual Report April 2019

Chairman’s Report It gives me great pleasure to introduce the 2019 annual report of the Council.

In the last year we received the resignation of Matt Gover from the Council as he moved away from the village and we welcomed David Blythe back to the Council.

In the last few weeks a new Council has been elected, albeit an uncontested election and your new Council is just two days old. There remains one vacancy on the Council which will be filled by co-option at the annual meeting of the Council on 14 May. During the civic year the Council has been driving forward a number of projects that are still to be completely delivered.

We have been given planning permission to resurface the car park at the village centre, but so far have not selected contractors to quote for the work, nor been able to establish the expected cost of the project.

We have made major steps in delivering the multi-media project for the main hall, and we will be holding a display of the facilities at the Annual Parish Council meeting on 14 th May. It is slightly disappointing that this could not be part of the Annual Meeting of Electors, but I invite all residents who wish to see what we have achieved to join us at 7pm on Tuesday 14th May, before the main meeting starts.

We attempted to involve the local residents in a discussion on how best we could protect the recreation ground from the unwanted attention of travellers, but after 2 drop in sessions we were none the wiser regarding the way forward. Members are divided as to how we could take this issue forward, so we will be revisiting the subject again.

We have been in close discussion with CDC and their preferred developer regarding the Masterplan for the impending housing development to the West of Tangmere. We have arranged a series of meetings to work on this project, but so far very little can be reported.

The Parish Council wants to reassure residents that all the infrastructure assets identified in the Neighbourhood Plan remain on the table, and we will continue to press to see all of our vision included in the final document. I am happy to report that so far the developer is strongly supporting that vision, and are looking forward to being able to advise residents on the progress towards achieving the objectives of the community.

I would like to thank the many residents who deliver the Tangmere News to all homes in the village, including the many new residents in the various new developments who have offered to help. Between them all they perform a valuable function in keeping the village up to date with local events.

The Council has kept the precept unchanged for many years, but as a result of deciding to enhance and strengthen our staffing base, it has become necessary to call for more funding from residents.

However, as the number of properties in the village has increased, so the tax charging base has increased. We have approved an increase of ÂŁ8,000 this year to the budget, which represents about ÂŁ1.00 per week per house in the village, and we believe we perform a valuable service with this money.

In future years we will continue to increase the precept in line with the number of homes that fund the Council, so the share per property does not increase, and we will continue to take on additional tasks around the village in order to be able to ensure regular care and 10

attention is afforded to such areas. This council is not ashamed to fund those aspects of the village that we are empowered to influence.

We remain committed to work hard to shape the emerging Masterplan for the new housing that will be coming to the village. Our objective remains to get the best infrastructure and services we can for the local community.

PARISH COUNCIL FINANCES The balance carried forward for 2018/19 is £138,554.24 Movements within the Parish Council Accounts including reserves during the financial year can be seen in full on the Parish website under the Parish Council tab.

For the first time we received Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) in 2018-19 of £30,320 and this funding stream will continue as more building takes place in the village.

Some significant payments were not made during 2018/19 as expected and will come out of General Reserves (£19,000).

GRANTS AND DISCRETIONARY PAYMENTS Section 137 Payments The limit for spending under Section 137 of the Local Government Act 1972 for this Council in the year to 31 March 2019 was £7.86 per elector. No payments were made under this legislation during 2018/2019 Grants Received £26,667 (a combination of New Homes Bonus and S106 money) has been granted by Chichester District Council to upgrade the sound, light and projection facilities in the main hall at the village centre. Further funding of £6,500 from S106 money has been granted for the new automatic door at the village centre and additional successful grant applications were made to Chichester District Council’s New Homes Bonus for speed indicator devices and new trees in the village.

Grants Awarded St Andrews Church was granted £250 towards ongoing maintenance of the churchyard.

Allowances for Councillors: Following a decision in 2007, no allowances were paid in 2018-2019 to Councillors. Expenses for Councillors consisted of minor reimbursements covering stationery and expenditure on behalf of the Council.

Allowances for Employees Expenses reimbursed to the administration team consisted of items purchased on behalf of the Parish Council.

Neighbourhood Watch

The police have introduced a new system of reporting crime and giving information, SOH (Single Online Home) this a quicker procedure, and most useful for those who don’t actually need personal contact. It does not replace 101 but gives more options to report something that has happened or to give information about a crime. It can be accessed at www.sussex.police.uk where you will find the improved ‘home’ page of the Sussex Police. Reporting incidents is really very important as it enables the police to make decisions about where to employ their stretched resources. If they don’t know about local issues they cannot deal with them.

We will be running some more Speedwatch events in Meadow Way and Tangmere Road in the near future, but we do need more volunteers to make these a more frequent event. If you have an hour or two to spare morning or afternoon let me know and we can get you trained and add you to our list.

Finally a big thank you to so many of you that turned out on our Saturday morning Spring Clean for Tangmere, we really did collect loads and loads of litter. Our village is a cleaner place for your efforts.

At our April meeting we learned something about mindfulness and Feldenkrais with the opportunity to try some of the exercises. May found us discussing the resolutions to be considered at the national AGM in June. Cervical screening and local bus services are the topics for this year’s debate.

We will be welcoming Douglas Easton to talk on strange inventions in June while in July we will hopefully be enjoying the long evening outside. Thank you to those that knitted chicks for St Wilfreds. Comments from your District and County Councillor Thankyou to all who voted (for whichever Party) in the CDC elections on 2nd May. Turnout across the now four Parish Ward was 30.88%, lowest of all the 21 Wards. Chris Page is my fellow District Cllr for this larger Ward. Though we will both keep across the issues for all the Ward, I will concentrate on the North and he the South so to best serve this diverse area.

During elections Cllrs receive a lot of comments and complaints about a wide range of issues. However it is very disappointing when in response to “have you reported it” residents say “no”. Be it: crime; antisocial behaviour; inappropriate driving; potholes; flytipping; environmental health issues etc, IT IS ESSENTIAL that everyone reports it to the Police/CDC/ WSCC. Nowt is likely to happen if few or no one formally reports incidents – venting on Facebook may make you feel better but doesn’t change anything in practice.

Masterplanning of the Tangmere Strategic Development is now underway and info on the timeline can be found at www.countryside-tangmere.co.uk.

CDC and WSCC have a wide range of inputs into this and subsequent planning application processes.

WSCC has a role in: school place planning (including primary, early years and special education); adult & child social care (incl housing for the elderly and children/ families centres); flood risk management;

library provision; refuse disposal; and highways and transport (including off site cycle access, bus route planning and mitigating the impacts of extra vehicle movements).

CDC has overall planning responsibility but has specific inputs on: housing types & tenures (30% of the housing is of various affordable tenures); landscape, open space & sports provision; community facilities; historic environment; environmental health (e.g. noise from the A27 and air quality); refuse collection (e.g. ensuring refuse freighters can get round to empty the bins); drainage; and detailed design (e.g. avoiding unacceptable overlooking between properties). There are overlaps.

Parking spaces guidance is provided by WSCC, but design and amenity considerations are CDC’s. Electric car charging provision is also something both Authorities have an input as well as Broadband.

Then there are the Government Agencies (e.g. Environment Agency; Historic England; Natural England; NHS and Highways England which is responsible for the immediately adjacent A27 and Chichester’s bypass) and the utilities (e.g. Portsmouth and Southern Water; Electricity; Gas; and Broadband/telecoms providers).

There are a lot of moving parts to this.

Getting the best out of it will be a challenge, all the while remembering that we are sacrificing good agricultural land and open countryside to meet population driven housing targets.

Orchard update

I love making compost which is why I foolishly turned out the compost bin in the orchard and refilled it adding grass clippings. This re-introduces air into the mix restarting the bacterial activity.

But, as it has been pointed out to me, this is an awful lot of work for a small amount of compost and there are 30 trees to mulch! So, if anyone has spare compost it will be gratefully received – or collected.

You may notice that the area around the trees has been weed killed. I do not take using weed killer lightly. I only use it once a year on calm, windless evenings when few insects are flying and there is no blossom or leaves on the trees.

This is quite a balancing act to ensure the weeds are in active growth but the trees are not, and, of course, waiting for a calm, dry evening in spring.

With 30 trees to weed it would be quite a task to hand weed every one and the weeds in the spring are always the worst to dig out..

If you walk past St Andrew's Church or take the public footpath through the churchyard you may have noticed work going on over the last couple of months.

Of course the grass is mown regularly and this job is carried out by a local contractor. But there have also been heaps of clippings from the hedges and builders bags full of leaves, branches and weeds which temporarily made it look untidy. The culprits (!) were a group of volunteers who spent two Saturday mornings with electric hedge trimmers, loppers, shears and secateurs getting the different hedges under control. The hedge next to the road is Holm Oak which is fast-growing and not easy to cut. The magnificent hedge to the west is a mature beech hedge which needs keeping under control. To the north is what we hope will become another beech hedge, though at the moment it is made up of some small, but growing beech "whips" that were planted a few years ago and these have just been reinforced with some larger beech saplings generously donated by a local gardening contractor. To the east is a rather overgrown laurel hedge.

Over the year we hope to do further work and are considering planting bulbs in the Autumn to provide some colour next Spring.

A walk around the churchyard takes you past memorials to many part residents of Tangmere - all residents have the right to be buried in the churchyard - as well as the war graves commemorating personnel from RAF Tangmere as well as a number of German servicemen who also lost their lives locally. There is also the memorial garden for those whose ashes are buried there and the unusual brick-built "barrel graves" which are most unusual.

Dental Disease? Nothing hurts, so no need to worry?

It is a sad fact that most dental disease gives no pain or signs until it is far too late.

Waiting until something feels wrong, such as chipped teeth, swelling or pain always increases the amount of work required to repair any damage.

Treatment by a Dentist will be needed and we want to help you avoid it.

No problems? Wait and possibly accept losing a tooth?

It’s never that simple. We all need teeth to talk properly, eat, and smile. As teeth are lost, so is the ability to enjoy these aspects of life which may not be reversible. It can come as a shock that tooth extraction can cost more than repair. Also, dentures or implants can cost £thousands to replace lost teeth that may have been avoided.

So, what are dental diseases and how can they be avoided?

Decay – This is normally the first disease process that affects the teeth from a younger age. Teeth that are not cleaned properly get attacked by sugar and acid in our diet resulting in patches of tooth that soften and crumble away, usually without pain in early stages.

To avoid decay, simple effective cleaning is needed, along with a healthy diet. Regular professional cleaning “is a must” as even good brushers miss some tartar every year. It is also vital you are shown and taught to better clean those missed places. Teeth can also be “coated” with sealants and hardened with Fluoride treatments to help protect against decay in areas identified as “at risk” by your dentist.

Gum Disease – This is generally a slower pain-free disease process, that only tends to get noticed from middle age with slightly loose or moving teeth. Earlier signs are bleeding and receding gums. The same bacteria that cause decay get under the gums and attack the bone supporting the teeth. As the bone softens, the teeth get loose and can move. At this point it may already be too late to save these teeth. Avoiding gum disease simply involves getting the gum margins around the teeth clean. A Hygienist can clean and “show you” problem areas and teach you how to do-it-yourself as destructive levels of plaque form really quickly day to day.

Wear – Not so much a disease process but as we get older teeth wear out with simple

use over time. If you stress and grind your teeth at night they can wear flat and chip and break. A simple thin night guard can protect your teeth against wear & tear and avoid the cost of repair… if we keep our teeth to later life. Don’t wait…

The point is, it is better to avoid problems than to fix them!

TANGMERE PRIMARY ACADEMY Year 5 and 6 students have spent time this term learning all about deforestation and ways in which we can help to improve this issue. They decided to write open letters to the residents of Tangmere to explain their concerns.

At Tangmere Primary Academy the School Council is ever evolving. This year a group of children were keen to improve the school grounds by creating an area where children After Before could read during playtimes. As luck would have it a group of teaching students from The University of Chichester were keen to get involved and so set to work, with the children, to make this idea happen.

This team of students and children created an Action Group sending out questionnaires to gain ideas of what the children in the school wanted to see in the reading area, looking at decoration, games and furniture.

The Students worked tirelessly within school time, weekends and holidays to turn an overgrown area of the grounds into an inviting area for the children to relax and take part in quite activities. The design allowed for there to be a sensory garden, using different scented plants as well as different sized tables for children to sit to draw or read and even their own bespoke reading house!

The project was funded through a number of fundraising activities by the University Students with the PTA providing outdoor cushions and rugs.

The children were excited about the Grand Opening which took place on Monday 13 th May. Thank you to everyone involved in this inspiring new learning space.

At St. Andrew’s, we have entered the season of weddings and baptisms. At both these important services, we talk about love. Love for another person, love of a partner and love of a child. Two very different kinds of love, both a vital part of family life. As a church we celebrate these loves as God’s gift to us. This love brings families together in a way that is good for everyone.

Services at St Andrew’s, There is another kind of love that God gives Tangmere us, one that Jesus told his disciples was his great commandment Every Sunday at 9:15am.

- Love your Neighbour. It is not the easiest type of love to under1st Sunday of the month at stand. After all, standing before family and friends saying that 6pm - Evening Song you will love your partner or that you will love your child is natu(2nd June, 4th August, ral and something that we can feel and understand. Loving your 6th October and 1st December) neighbour on the other hand is more difficult, more abstract and more all embracing.

Services at St Andrew’s, We are lucky that the Bible gives us some hints on what loving Oving our neighbour means. Jesus tells us that feeding the poor, caring Every Sunday at 11am for the sick and comforting those in need is part of this love. St Thursday 30th May Paul tells us that this kind of love is patient and kind, it is not – Ascension Day – 19:30 irritable or resentful, it rejoices in truth. This kind of love is about being a good neighbour. Thinking of others as well as ourEveryone Welcome selves, being part of a community that cares about others. Not being “us and them” but being one under the same banner. Sharing what it means to live in our village.

As we celebrate the weddings and baptisms that may be taking place in our families or among our friends, take a few moments to remember this other type of love and take to heart Jesus’ commandant “Love your Neighbour”

Tangmere Players are taking a well-earned rest for the next couple of months but will be back in September to start rehearsals for the December Pantomime (yet to be decided). Since we started in 1988 we have seen a lot of young Village people treading the boards'. Some came back to us after University and we also have their children.

There are now a lot of young people out there in the village and Tangmere Players could do with some new faces. It is a commitment but it is fun and helps develop a young person’s potential. In fact we would like to see new faces whether it be on the stage or behind the scenes. Not just children but adults too. 7 to 70+.

Starting again Monday 2nd September in the main hall of the village centre, 7-9pm.

The Fontwell Car Boot Sale is back!

Worthing based events company Town and Country have taken on the site at Fontwell Park Racecourse, Arundel and revived the popular Car Boot.

The Car Boot closed in 2017 amidst disappointment from regular Booters and the once popular Sunday morning destination remained shut for many months.

During it’s peak it regularly attracted over 200 Car Boot sellers and many more members of the public giving the local community a chance to recycle old goods, make some money and enjoy a morning out against the backdrop of one of the UKs most popular racecourses.

Buyers came from both near and far with many travelling from Surrey and Hampshire to grab a bargain and enjoy the Sussex countryside.

Town and Country reopened the Car Boot in March this year and the storms during the month hindered the starting weeks. April led to more promising weather and May has seen the numbers increase as the hard working team get the Car Boot community back on board.

Local resident and regular Car Boot Seller Val Pilbrow commented on its return “It is well organised and a very friendly atmosphere, we wish the team all the success as they build the Car Boot back up. We love that the early birds get a good price for their pitch” The Car Boot is open every Sunday from 7am for sellers and 8am to the public. There is an early bird running during May between 7 and 8 am of £5 per car and £10 per van for sellers. Entry to the public is free.

The planning application is currently live on the district council website – www.chichester.gov.uk with the reference 19/00835/FUL – this was scheduled for a decision on 15th May. Once we have had approval for the application, we will then be in a position to start work. This will mean clearing the undergrowth, removing the breeze blocks on the door and placing a new security door. It will also mean that we will be able to send in our architect to undertake a full building conditions survey. That will provide us with evidence on the state, fabric and ultimately the potential costs to renovate.

Once we are aware of this evidence, we will attend another parish council meeting to present this to the village and seek your views.

I would like to personally thank the Parish Council on behalf of Barnham Trojans Under 13 Blues Football Club, for agreeing to let the team use the fantastic facilities at Tangmere Recreation ground. It means so much to have such a great venue to host all of our home fixtures.

The boys have been made to feel very welcome and enjoy playing all home matches at the Malcolm Road site. The team compete in the local Arun and Chichester Sunday Youth League finishing in a very credible fifth position this season.

History Group Tangmere Local History Group offers a programme of speakers and outings on sub-

jects of historical interest, particularly in Tangmere and Chichester, but also further afield. Visitors are always very welcome to our meetings.

Our May event was a visit to Portchester Castle. It is the best preserved Roman fort in northern Europe, and has had a varied history since those days. The climb up to the top of the keep was very strenuous, but well worth it for the amazing views over the Solent and beyond.

Our next meeting takes place on Thursday 13th June, when Ian Everest will be giving us a talk on Shepherds of the South Downs. Meetings are held at Tangmere Medical Centre, starting at 7.30pm.

Times Past

In August 1897 Tangmere village hosted a small group of children from London. Not much is known about the children or how they travelled to their holiday in the village. The article below was written by the Rector and appeared in the parish magazine.

LITTLE VISITORS TO TANGMERE. - On August 5th we expect some little London children down on a short visit to Tangmere. They are sent down, these little Londoners, for a breath of country air by “the Children's Country Holidays Fund”. A Society, whose objects it is to see that the children of some of the poorest and most densely populated parts of our great Metropolis should once a year have a holiday from the din and dust of London.

What better place could children come to for a holiday from noisy London than to our quiet little Sussex village? A contrast indeed! A change of scene which perhaps we, who have lived always in the country, can scarcely imagine. How these little ones will enjoy their holiday! I should like to express my thanks to those who are housing the children, and to say how glad I am that there are those willing and able to help on the work that the Children’s Holiday Society is doing, by taking charge of the children during their stay. I am sure that the Tangmere children will do all they can to make the children’s stay a happy one.

Our little visitors have returned to London.

They have, we are sure, enjoyed their country outing. On Monday, August 16th, Mrs Gaisford entertained the children at tea at St John’s house. I would wish to thank Mrs Shepherd, Mrs Guildford, and Mrs Fleet, for the excellent care they have taken of the children during their stay in Tangmere.

Can we be the first HEDGEHOG FRIENDLY VILLAGE? Last year the only hedgehogs I saw were three dead ones on Tangmere Road.

A marked decline in the UK make the hedgehog a UK Priority Species. Between the years 2000-2014, urban populations have declined by up to a third, and rural populations by over half.

Hedgehogs feeds mainly on macro-invertebrates such as beetles, caterpillars, earthworms, slugs and spiders.

They can travel 2km in night, making access through gardens incredibly important. One hedgehog has been recorded travelling 9km in one night!

They can breed any time between April- September with the peak season being May - June.

Litter sizes are often 4-5 hoglets, with just 2-3 of these surviving to independence.

The best way to get an indicator of hedgehog activity in your garden, is to look for their poo!

Hedgehog poo is quite distinctive because of their diet. Each dropping is jam packed full of shiny bits of beetle and other invertebrates and seeds, so it is very textured.

Hedgehog Tips A dish of fresh water can be vital in hot weather Pile up some logs in the corner of the garden A diversity of plants rich in nectar will encourage insects A 13cm hole will allow hedgehogs access through your fence No single garden is large enough Avoid treating your lawn with herbicide If you must use slug pellets use only 3 per plant ‘Hogs make nests from deciduous leaves And, most importantly, when driving at night around our village in late spring be aware of hedgehog activity. They are very active at this time of year. And if you need to move one out of the road, don’t worry about their fleas, they are hedgehog specific!

ASIAN HORNET ALERT !!!

In Britain the ‘European Hornet’ is our native hornet with which man and nature have happily co-existed for thousands of years. The European Hornet are generally not aggressive unless defending their nest or if attacked or trodden on, for example. The ‘Asian Hornet’ was first seen in Britain in Gloucestershire in 2016 and then seen in Devon in 2017 and last year (2018) a nest was found in Alresford in Hampshire. All the nests were destroyed.

Like the European Hornet the Asian hornet is a carnivore but it is much more aggressive as a predator of insects such as honey bees and also rather more aggressive to people who might get in its way. They are now endemic in France and in some places the song-bird populations are said to be declining because the hornets are eating so many insects that would be food for the birds.

It does seem quite likely that in the future the Asian Hornet will become endemic here in Britain as it can come across so easily from France but the longer we can keep it out the better.

It is currently a notifiable pest which means that if it is seen anywhere in Britain this should be reported and if the nest can be found it will be destroyed.
